For some decades, students and scholars of Political Science have debated methodological differences, paradigmatic differences, and policy differences as they relate to curricula. Today, the real challenges facing the teaching of Political Science have less to do with content and much more to do with form and process. The next transformation in teaching and learning must address what kind of political scientist we wish to be, which kind of Political Science we need to create. Our argument advances in three moments. First, we sketch contemporary contexts for analyzing teaching and learning, musing about old and new paradigmatic/methodological debates and the new social-technological contexts of undergraduate learning. Second, we discuss conceptions of competencies in the U.S., Europe, and in relation to a specific Political Science program in Brazil. Third, we dare to sketch a "metaprofile" of the "good political scientist", modeled on the work of the ALFA Tuning Project of the European Commission and reflections on related Brazilian and Latin American experiences. The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between autonomy markers in adult people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and variables such as intelligence quotient (IQ), early aging, and literacy. Participants were 47 adults with ID (33 men; aged 28–58 years with nonspecific etiology, 34 literate). All participants were trainees at the Center for Training of Capacity and Orientation for Employment at Associação de Pais e Amigos dos Excepcionais de São Paulo, São Paulo State, Brazil. They were divided into two age groups: younger ( n = 27, mean age 31.85; ±2.23), and older ( n = 38, mean age 41.84; ±5.54). They were administered intelligence scales twice, and answered questions related to social participation, community integration, and choice-making; the percentage of item responses leaning toward self-determination and freedom in choice-making was considered in defining the autonomy score. For both groups, IQ declined from the first to the second assessment. Autonomy scores were more determined by IQ classification than by literacy. Wood from three different plants of the Celastraceae growing in their natural habitats in Brazil (Maytenus aquifolia Mart.) and South Africa [Putterlickia retrospinosa van Wyk and Mostert, P. verrucosa (E. Meyer ex Sonder) Szyszyl.] was established as a source of endophytic bacteria using a medium selective for actinomycetes. Two isolates were identified as Streptomyces setonii and S. sampsonii whereas two others were not assignable to any of the known Streptomyces species. They were preliminarily named Streptomyces Q21 and Streptomyces MaB-QuH-8. The latter strain produces a new chloropyrrol and chlorinated anthracyclinone. The chloropyrrol showed high activity against a series of multiresistent bacteria and mycobacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anisakiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked fish containing the third larval stage of anisakid nematodes. Safety in fish consumption from extractive fisheries is a challenge for public health authorities. This study presents the hematological analysis, necroscopic and histopathological examination of three Hoplias lacerdae parasitized by Anisakis spp. captured in an affluent of the Teles Pires River, in the municipality of Sinop, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. At necropsy, intense parasitism was observed, characterized by free and adherent anisakid larvae in organs and mesentery. In the histopathological study, there were nephrotic alterations and hepatopathies, as well as the first report of the presence of Anisakis cyst adhered in the myocardium of Hoplias lacerdae. There was a correlation between the increase in the number of parasites and the circulating leukocytes, influenced by the number of neutrophils and eosinophils. However, other studies should be designed to elucidate the pathophysiological and epidemiological changes in Hoplias lacerdae by the parasitism of Anisakis spp., due to its socioeconomic importance, as well as the potential risk to public health.
