In this article, I examine the definition of resistance given by a favela woman from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil—Lucia Cabral—and its epistemological potential for urban theory. From a feminist, postcolonial and decolonial point of view, I argue that Lucia's definition of resistance entails an insightful framework to understand urban transformations, because she shifts the question of 'what they are' to 'where they stream from'. I build on my situated position and inter‐relationality with Lucia to argue that, first, urban transformations, which I here refer to as forms of urbanization, can and often do come from the favela; secondly, that these forms of urbanization derive from situated and translocated‐ing Amefrican epistemologies; and thirdly, that women's bodies constitute, in many cases, the very basis of urban futurities in the favelas. I look into embodied forms of urbanization to conclude that it is possible to see, feel, sense and nurture forms of future‐thinking and ‐building that I here call Amefrican futurities, for they emerge from the specific subjectivities and praxis of women living in the favelas. Following an epistemological position of broad and historical view in geographical approaches, the society-nature relationship is established as a common point in various schools of thought, supporting, furthermore, in contemporary times, a socio-environmental geography, on which a geography of waters emerges. As well as the reflections carried out here on a theoretical and practical basis, I propose a greater geographical significance of the research approaches involving water, water resources, and water security, contributing to theoretical-methodological assumptions around Hydrogeography. For this, two approaches were initially carried out, clarifying the global, regional and local scales of the hydrological cycle, and presupposing an epistemological conception of water resource as territorial resource and territory as category to reveal the way in which the appropriation and uses of this resource occur, important conditions to better delimit the water crisis, which, has as a consequence an increase in conflicts related to agricultural and mining export activities, and revealing Brazil as one of the main exporters of virtual water, while a significant number, about 35 thousand of Brazilians are officially deprived of access to water. This article discusses the process of writing, which I refer to here as 'co-creation', of the life story of Lourdes Barreto, co-founder of the Brazilian Movement of Prostitutes. I intertwine public history and oral history methodologies with a decolonising feminist epistemology. This theoretical framework made it possible to situate Lourdes' narratives of prostitution in the North and Northeast of Brazil within the conceptual fields of agency and resistance. Lourdes guided the fieldwork and helped me redefine how I incorporated my presence into her daily life. In dialogue with her, I sought to conduct a participatory research project, in which authorities on distinct knowledges were also shared. I refer to the intersection of subjectivities and positionalities between investigator and collaborator as part of an intense process of co-creation, participation, and negotiation. Co-creation stimulated reflections on ethical and political issues throughout the research process with Lourdes; as the narrator, she was a participant in the process as opposed to an object to be analysed. Similarly, throughout the process of researching prostitution, as a researcher, I became an active member of the movement. The article critically reviews the coloniality of Brazilian Communicational Approaches based on the five most cited Communication Theories books in Brazil. This self-criticism locates the hybris of the zero point of such narratives, which delimits only one after modernity, with the emergence of massive phenomena added to the technical advances of the media and the professional specialization of Communication skills. We investigate how the dominant modern colonial paradigm is discursively manifested in the books. American and European approaches, formulated by white men, predominate, which configure a canon traditionally perpetuated in the teaching of Communication in Brazil. This paper aims at understanding the reception of the new anthropology, in particular the perspective of Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, by psychoanalysis and analytical psychology. Native peoples in Brazil have acquired visibility nationally and internationally, thanks to their mobilization and political organization. Award-winning books have been published such as A Queda do Céu (The Fall of the Sky) by Davi Kopenawa and Bruce Albert, and Ideias para Adiar o Fim do Mundo (Ideas to Postpone the End of the World) by Ailton Krenak. Freudian-based psychoanalysis keeps silent about native peoples and the new anthropology. The Lacanian psychoanalyst C. Dunker appears more open about it and wrote many articles and one important book on the subject. Jungians are the most enthusiastic and speak out politically about these peoples through courses, study groups, articles, online debates, books and the presence of native leaders and shamans in their conferences. Background: Drawing on Phillipe Descola's comparative analysis of ontological regimes across cultures, this article identifies analogism guiding ethnobiological repertories among two distinctive traditional tropical forest communities in Brazil. Methods: We carried out participant observation, semi-structured interviews and informal dialog with 48 individuals, among quilombolas of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil and ribeirinhos of the Amazon. Results: We documented 60 traditional practices governed by analogical principles, comprising hunting, ethnomedical practices, food taboos, and other interactions with non-human entities. We also identify and classify the analogical principles reported in the field data. Based on this classification, we address the phenomenological dimension of the ethnobiological repertoires and discuss the epistemological and ontological foundations of this form of reasoning. We also hypothesize on the role of analogism shaping ethnobiological repertories more generally in Brazil. Conclusion: The heuristic model we apply—articulating phenomenology, epistemology and ontology—could prove valuable in ethnobiology and the emerging field of "anthropology beyond the human." This study aimed to group some perspectives on Go Tani's epistemological activity in the context of Brazilian Physical Education (PE), establishing his contributions and reflections on Kinesiology for the structuring of undergraduate and graduate Physical Education in Brazil. This is a bibliographical and exploratory study, which prioritized Tani's production on the most varied platforms and the materials that circulated about Kinesiology in national and international literature. Heritage Education is nowadays the subject of national politics and arouses the interest of civil organizations as well as academic institutions. In a brief and exploratory way, this text presents the process of "institutionalization of Heritage Education" in recent times in Brazil, mainly focusing on the role played by National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN). It seems that, since then, we have witnessed an increase in Heritage Education into something more dense and profound than just a State policy, but a pedagogy of teaching, research, and extension, which gradually can contribute to rethinking the meaning of education. This article presents some of the theoretical-epistemological assumptions and methods which underpin Narrative Analysis in Brazil. In the niche we have carved out for ourselves, we combine (auto)ethnographic techniques with analytical tools which draw on both narrative analysis and sociolinguistics, as well as discourse analysis more widely speaking. In this paper, we especially seek to address what we consider the symbiotic relationship between the aforementioned field of study and contemporary transdisciplinary social research. This is done by showcasing examples of narrative research carried out in Brazil, particularly those motivated by sociopolitical concerns. Moreover, we aim to contribute to the debate ignited in post-truth times by the performative view we take of language, and so to speak narrative, by contemplating the practical repercussions of innovations stemming from the current state of affairs within the context of our own investigations. This article provides a critical analysis of the scientific production of professors who work in public higher education institutions in the Midwest of Brazil. For involving investigations, selections and literature's registrations on the researched object and, documentary analysis, a bibliographic research was carried out, considering that part of the research is doctoral theses analysis. For data analysis, it has used quantitative and qualitative approach. The analyzes indicate biological and biodynamic character's hegemony in the scientific productions of the analyzed teachers, particularly in the major thematic tendencies and theoretical references used in doctoral theses. This tendency reflects an overall view of this area in the last few decades, which favours the fragmentation of the knowledge of Physical Education in biological and health sciences (natural sciences) and, human and social sciences (human sciences), prevailing the biological sub-area at the expenses of the socio-cultural and pedagogical sub-areas. Inspired by Amerindian peoples' philosophy, this article aims to problematise the modern philosophical anthropology that underlies psychology as a social practice, and to use the Amerindian perspectivist philosophy proposed by Viveiros de Castro as a critique of Western values. Thus, we approach some of coloniality's epistemological implications in the institution of subject-object and nature-culture separations that grounds psychology. On the one hand, there is a totalising unification, which operates alongside a transcendental subject that subjugates its object. Beginning from nature's homogeneity, the differentiation and hierarchy of each being depends on its representations or its soul, expressed as a people's culture or as an individual psychology. This spiritual-representational aspect is the very foundation of the colonialism and racism of damnation, and their purpose in perpetuating the miserable ways of life of those considered to be scum. On the other hand, in Amerindian cosmogony, humanity is a pronominal mode, a non-exclusive perspectivist position of mankind, built in each context of relations. It is based on this idea that we posit other bases and a new agenda for psychology as a social practice which can enable us to broaden our ways of living towards ecosophical care, as a way of resistance to coloniality. Recently, a major turning point in the field of dementia research has occurred: serious and independent studies have shown that there are risk factors that can be modified in ways that reduce dementia risk. However, the reality behind this hopeful message is much more complex than simply translating it into concrete public health prescriptions regarding medications and lifestyle changes. The objective of this article is twofold: 1. In line with observations from other authors in the field of critical public health, the recent turn in dementia epistemologies will be described as a fallacy when conceived as individualized behavioral recommendations; 2. The profound change in the notion of risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) – now defined using nearly identical risk factors as Vascular dementia ("vascularization of AD") – has also had an important impact on whether people are classified as "good citizens." After a short description of recent studies about Alzheimer's disease and the new risk factors associated with it, three interrelated historical changes are described as being constitutive of the "new dementia." Based on fieldwork in geriatrics in Brazil, one example will be given that illustrates how recent changes in understanding dementia result in value-laden models which, as a consequence, are sorting out people. The objective is to present the results of epistemological studies on the physical education production of researchers working in the Northeast region of Brazil. The results of two investigations (2005 and 2017) on the subject of School Physical Education were compared. The results indicate that the predominant theme in 2005 (20%) appears secondary in a new investigation in 2017 (10.14%). Despite being overcome by issues of biodynamic, the school problem remains basic to understand the construction of the scientific field of physical education in Brazil. This paper describes, in comparison with Brazil, the critical experiences of Chilean field of Physical Education after the 1990s. In methodological terms, the study is based on a review of articles that publish on the theme in Chile. The history of institutionalized childhood and adolescence in Brazil remains the object of study by researchers because there are many issues to be demystified, dismembered and revisited. From the period of the Wheel of the Exposed until today, in effect the Federal Constitution of 1988 and the Statute of the Child and the Adolescent of 1990, the institutionalization is still a frequent method, even though the legislation treats it as exceptional. The text defends the possibility of working within these environments from an educational perspective, relying on social pedagogy, as theory and methodology, and on the social educator, as a professional who accompanies children and adolescents in protective measures. To this end, it presents research results (in progress) based on bibliographic research on the themes in question, and which supported the empirical research carried out during the elaboration of the dissertation entitled "Social education and the autonomy of adolescents in protective measure: a Freirean conception. institutional reception" in the Graduate Program of the University of Caxias do Sul, seeking to contribute to the minimization of damage in this institutional environment through social pedagogy, having it as a strategy and as an epistemology of hope in the institutional territory. The investigation on how we think and build knowledge has always been central to philosophy. Several theories have already suggested the influence of dominant class and language power on how societies reproduce unjust, inefficient, and even unsustainable ideas and concepts from the environmental and future generations' point of view. In an unprecedented way and seeking to update the debate, this article focuses on two reflections from different contexts on this theme. It aims to verify the pertinence in assigning to a same type of epistemology the dialectic of knowledge and the cognitive history, proposed, respectively, by Caio Prado Júnior and Jeremy Lent. The choice to compare the ideas of the two authors - the first with a work published in 1963 in Brazil and the second in 2017 in the United States - is due to the similarity of some of its background formulations while starting from very different perspectives. In order to reach the announced goal, this work presents a comparative study between both propositions. At the end, it is emphasized that, despite the differences, both authors denounce bias of gnosiology and indicate that the most appropriate approach for the knowledge construction must contemplate the interaction between subject and object of thought as a complex, systemic and relational process. It investigates how the Information Science in Brazil establishes its interdisciplinary dynamics with the French Discourse Analysis, which has unfolded in different theoretical and methodological orders. In addition, it analyzes, from a diachronic perspective, the epistemological interactions between the French aspect of Discourse Analysis and Information Science, especially with regard to the Organization of Information and Knowledge. Through a literature review, it shows the main historical contributions of discourse theory to the informational field in the Brazilian context. Among the theoretical contributions of Discourse Analysis is the The article explores the dialogical relationship that can be established between the French theory of discourse analysis in the Information and Knowledge Organization in the Brazilian context. In the broad sense, the reflective path comprises a possible gnosiology present in the Science of Information and the discursive studies. The focus of this analytical study is on the interdisciplinary issues, as well as on the epistemological relationships, that this dialogue presents for Documentary Analysis. The objective is to establish the interdisciplinary relations of the two areas of study in the Brazilian context, having as a methodological path for the understanding of this diachronic perspective the critical epistemology. Three lines of discourse analysis were chosen for the purpose of the dialogical relationship: the line of Michel Pêcheux, the line of Sociolinguistics and the line of Michel Foucault. The first and third are present in works carried out in the field of Information Science, especially in the convergences with Documentary Analysis, having as confluence information as discourse, subject, language and pragmatics. Possible paths point to a scenario affected by power disputes. Thus, this scenario produces meaning effects and needs to be analyzed by a reading gesture, taking into account the historical issues of time and space, because depending on the cultural and temporal moment, information and discourse can produce different effects of meaning. The current era demands our thoughtful attention to how states process asylum seeker claims for safe haven, yet we know little about the practices through which asylum officials carry out that work. Building from literature on the body and knowledge production, this paper illuminates the workings of (dis)embodiment in the asylum process. I use the term (dis)embodiment to refer to an arrangement of separate yet interdependent practices of disembodying and embodying knowledge. These practices of knowledge production together form an integral part of what I call the “epistemic logic” of asylum - the techniques and processes of reasoning used to produce and analyse information to determine if an asylum seeker qualifies for refugee status. Through an ethnography of the asylum process in Brazil, I document how officials produce and privilege disembodied knowledge, while they contrastingly constrain the knowledge of asylum seekers to their bodies and lived experiences. The present study describes Psychosocial Care as a new paradigm currently operating within the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, emphasising one of its key elements: the provision of mental care within a network and a territory. To this end, the social and cultural diversity of each territory is taken as fundamental aspects to enable appropriate care for mental suffering, overcoming exclusionist thinking patterns that recently have taken on worrying conservative manifestations, and eliminating misconceptions about what defines a mental health sufferer, as well as those who choose alternative ways of being. Improving psychological practice in mental health services in the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde) requires a critical analysis of core concepts of the psychiatric reform, such as ‘social reinsertion’. This analysis, oriented by the dialectics of exclusion/inclusion, showed that this concept is impregnated with the adaptation paradigm and asylum view which prevents its effective implantation. The results suggest it is necessary to include social aspects in the discussion of mental health, articulating it with networks of social work and recuperating the revolutionary aspects of the psychiatric reform, thus demarcating the political nature of professional practices. In the late 1990s researchers in Pelotas Southern Brazil began documenting what they considered to be unacceptably high rates of licensed psychotropic use among individuals of all ages, including youth. This came as a surprise, since the vast majority of psychiatrists in Pelotas draw on psychoanalytic theory and approach pharmaceutical use, especially for children and adolescents, in a consciously tempered way. Drawing from a longitudinal ethnographic sub-study, part of a larger 1982 birth cohort study, this paper follows the circuitous trajectories of emergent pharma-patterns among “shantytown” youth over a ten-year period, exploring the thickly layered and often moralized contingencies in which psychodynamic psychiatrists' intention to resist excessive pharmaceuticalization both succeed and crumble. I juxtapose these trajectories with the growing salience of an “anti-biologizing” explanatory framework that psychiatrists and researchers are using to pre-empt the kind of diagnostics-driven “biopsychiatrization” so prevalent in North America. My analysis suggests that psychiatrists' use of this framework ironically contributes to their failed attempts to “resist” pharmaceuticalization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the foundation myths of Brazil in the last two centuries, paying particular attention to the relationship between these myths and governmental attitudes toward the hybridity of Northern and Southern ethnic and technoscientific entities. Based upon this examination, the article argues that it is important to consider both the wider temporal frames and the shifts and sedimentations that have formed current foundation myths and shaped their relation to science and technology. Postcolonial science technology studies theories illuminate aspects of this trajectory, but our analysis suggests a more complex scenario that involves internal political dynamics and the work of local intellectuals. We argue that the example of Brazilian social scientists should encourage scholars to go beyond the current focus on breaking the myths of technoscience and undertake mythmaking initiatives with wider societal resonances. This article aims to discuss the concept of environment present in the theoretical field of Brazilian geography. The emergence of the environmental discourse from the middle of the last century brought to the vocabulary of geographers the concept of medium under the label environment and, although this new designation has become widespread in geographical science, suffered, by contrast, a considerable amount of criticism of his epistemological consistency, as well as their social intentions. In this article, I explore the epistemological and methodological dimensions of my research regarding representation and identification in the context of the National Street Children Movement in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. The research, carried out between 2005 and 2008, is theoretically informed by Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical Realism. My aim is to show the relations between research dimensions, research questions, methods and ontological components, in accordance to this theoretical background. This paper aims to reflect about the perspectives of academic production in marketing in Brasil departing from a historically established clash between researchers dedicated to quantitative and qualitative approaches to investigation. It is an essay inspired by the works by Salomão Frias on quantitative research, and Francisco David Giovanni Vieira on qualitative research on marketing in Brazil. The article aims to discuss the methodological and theoretical assumptions of the academic production that focuses on the History of Education in Brazil under Pedro II's rule, with focus on the implementation of Gymnastics in Secondary Education. The paper considers the material base on which Brazilian society is constituted as a nation, as well as the social, political and ideological relations from which the educational proposals are developed, and which lie on the situation in which Gymnastics was established in Imperial education. In the academic production mapped, there are few studies that address the subject under a methodological approach based on the critical theory of totality. Most of the work is based on the new history. We conclude by reaffirming the relevance of the Marxist dialectical historical-critical epistemology in order to deep the knowledge about man's reality and their historical production, understood as a path under construction. The present study aims unassuming, but practical and referential. Submit to the academic audience, particularly those who are interested in having as a tool for their research, the theoretical frameworks of anthropology, a very brief introduction - dialogical - to some important aspects of Clifford Geertz's thought, both for using as a basis, one that is considered his masterpiece and reference: The Interpretation of Cultures, which, though first published in Brazil in 1978, still remains unknown to many students of the humanities and social sciences. So here it is not a review of the book (which is already reviewed at other times), but a dialogue with the core of the thinking of Geertz described in his work, in order to discuss and research methodologies that today, many times, if based on essentialist assumptions or seek to describe reality pari passu, wanting him to say it is. This paper precisely intends to question such a project, and say innocent, offering new paradigm, already so old (60's and 70's, when Geertz develops), but so often overlooked in current research. This article analyzes understandings of indigeneity and legal consciousness in Brazil in the 16th, early 20th and 21st centuries. The article focuses on the often ignored work of João Mendes Junior, written in 1912, about the indigenous peoples of São Paulo and on Gabriel Soares de Sousa’s Tratado descritivo do Brasil em 1587 [A Descriptive Treatise of Brazil in 1587]. Mendes’ ideas about race, biology and indigeneity diverge considerably from hegemonic Western theories of racial purity and Social Darwinism, but his contribution has never really been acknowledged. This article argues that theories that better fit the organizing model of the free market have become more hegemonic and widespread. For this reason, social scientists should strive to bring into discussion epistemological alternatives to the hegemonic principles of capitalism, which foster exploitation, destitution and the privatization of public space. Speakers of Kalapalo, a Southern Carib language spoken in central Brazil, use a complex set of grammatical particles to reference epistemic judgments. Using data from narratives, hereditary leader's ritual communication, ritual songs, conversations, and didactic speech, I use deictic and stance concepts to understand the semantics of this system. A focus on discursive practice illustrates how various intersubjective stance processes are foregrounded by epistemic marking. The differential selection and assessment of knowledge is a key feature of medical practice. This paper presents a study of how doctors select and assess information in practice. Fourteen internal medicine professors from a relevant medical school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were selected through preliminary interviews with medical students. The professors were subjected to open-ended interviews. The resulting material was interpreted through a conceptual framework derived from Ludwik Fleck, in order to establish the relevant elements of the thought style characteristic of the way they select and acquire new knowledge. The thought style that emerged from this set of interviews can be briefly characterized as a largely intuitive, pragmatic, result-oriented search of relevant (that is, potentially useful in practice) information. The doctors sought sources with academic credibility, but they maintained primary interest in practical, experiential knowledge. They also expressed a rather sceptical stance, at times bordering on cynicism. Despite this mistrust, doctors lack the resources (time, knowledge of technical aspects of research, particularly in terms of epidemiology and statistics) to effectively assess knowledge that is constantly being force-fed to them. This relative lack of resources is worsened, on one side, by the perception of medicine as subject to frequent and major changes, and on the other by the vastly disproportionate forces available to those who effectively produce and distribute such knowledge. The first part of this article reminds us that the new land the navigators found 500 years ago, later called Brazil, did not, in fact, fit into their mythical and commercial expectations. Therefore, it was practically abandoned by Portugal for almost 40 years. This fact is used as a kind of epistemological link to interrelate wish, dream and preconditions of knowledge. There will be no solidary Brazil without a huge collective dream to create it. The second part focuses on the educator's role in the creation of such a dream. He/she must be a catalyzer of semantic fields of hope and solidarity.
