The purpose of this study was to assess the characteristics and prevalence of sports-related injuries in visually disabled athletes of the Brazilian football 5-a-side team. The participants were 13 male athletes, all classified as B1 visual class, members of the Brazilian team, who played in five consecutive international competitions. Data were collected using the Brazilian Paralympic Committee and the Brazilian Confederation of Sports for the Blind report form. From the total of 13 athletes, 11 succumbed to some form of injury during the 5 competitions, which incorporated 23 matches, representing a prevalence of 84.6 %. A total of 35 sports injuries were recorded, giving a clinical incidence of 2.7 injuries per athlete and an injury risk of 0.85 and an incidence rate of 0.12 injuries per match. Traumatic injuries (80 %) were more common than overuse injuries (20 %) (p <0.05). The highest distribution of injury was in the lower limbs (80 %), followed by the head (8.6 %), spine (5.7 %) and upper limbs (5.7 %). The body regions most affected were the knee (28.6 %), feet (17.1 %), ankle (11.4 %) and thigh (11.4 %). Contusions (31.4 %), sprains (25.7 %) and tendinopathy (8.6 %) were the most frequent diagnoses. This is the first study to describe the nature and prevalence of sports-related injuries in 5-a-side football in blind athletes. The results are important in guiding strategies to inform the implementation of preventive pathways and provide a strong rationale for the compulsory use of additional protective equipment. Background: Tuberculosis remains an important public health problem in Brazil where over 100 000 new cases and 6000 deaths are reported every year. Current drug efficacy and wide availability should have curbed this toll. The goal was to study the factors associated with death in incident cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (PT) during treatment. Methods: This is a case-control study including all new cases of PT reported between 2000 and 2004; cases were patients who died of any cause and controls were those cured after initial PT treatment. Data analyses included unconditional multiple hierarchical logistic regression. Results: A total of 313 502 new cases of tuberculosis were reported between 2000 and 2004; 224 355 (71.6%) were cured after initial treatment and 20 721 (6.6%) died during the surveillance follow-up. Over 82% of all cases were diagnosed with PT. After controlling for significant variables, the factors associated with a higher risk of death included gender (males: odds ratio (OR) 1.4; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.33 to 1.47), age (<5 years of age: OR 1.90; 95% CI 1.51 to 2.38; 30-59 years: OR 2.78; 95% CI 2.61 to 2.97; over 60 years: OR 10.92; 95% CI 10.09 to 11.81), positive HIV serology (OR 10.59; 95% CI 9.76 to 11.48), alcoholism (OR 1.49; 95% CI 1.36 to 1.65), mental disorder (OR 1.80; 95% CI 1.43 to 2.27) and presence of additional lung pathology on chest x ray (OR 2.22; 95% CI 1.83 to 2.70). Protective variables included education (highest level: OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.63 to 0.70). Conclusions: Preventive interventions should target the most vulnerable patients, in particular the very young and the elderly, those infected with HIV and those presenting with a mental disorder or additional lung pathology. During the COVID-19 pandemic, populations living further away from urban centers faced immense difficulties accessing health services. This study aims to analyze how Brazilian remote rural municipalities faced the COVID-19 pandemic based on their political, structural, and organizational response to access to healthcare. A qualitative study of multiple cases was conducted with thematic and deductive content analysis of 51 interviews conducted with managers and healthcare professionals in 16 remote rural municipalities in the states of Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Piauí, Minas Gerais, and Amazonas. With their socio-spatial dynamics and long distances to reference centers, the remote rural municipalities responded to the demands of the pandemic but did not have their needs met promptly. They preserved communication with the population, reorganized the local system centered on primary health care (PHC), and changed the functioning of healthcare units, exceeding the limits of their responsibilities to provide the necessary care and awaiting referral to other levels of complexity. They faced a shortage of services, gaps in assistance in the regional network, and inadequate healthcare transport. The pandemic reiterated PHC's difficulties in coordinating care, exposing care gaps in reference regions. The equitable and resolute provision of the local health system in the remote rural municipalities implies inter-federative articulation in formulating and implementing public policies to ensure the right to health.

Background: In 2016/2017 we had a major epidemic of chikungunya (CHIK) in Brazil, with many deaths. We evaluated to factors associated with deaths from CHIK that occurred in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil., Methods: A matched case-control study was conducted (1:2), by sex, age (± 5 years) and neighborhood. Cases were CHIK deaths that occurred between January 1 and December 31, 2017, in Fortaleza, Brazil, and which were laboratory confirmed. Controls were laboratory confirmed CHIK patients occurring in the same neighborhood and in the same period, but which did not progress to death., Results: 82 cases of CHIK and 164 controls were included. Considering the clinical history, significant associations were found between other chronic heart diseases (OR 3.8; CI: 1.53-9.26) and chronic kidney disease (OR 12.77; CI: 2.75-59.4). In the multivariate analysis of the variables related to signs and symptoms, fever (OR: 19.23 CI: 1.73-213.78), abdominal pain (OR: 3; 74 CI: 1.06-13.16), apathy (OR: 11.62 CI: 2.95-45.82) and dyspnea (OR: 50.61; CI: 12.37-207.18) were identified with greater likelihood of death from CHIK. It also stood out that altered blood glucose was associated with cases with a worse prognosis (OR: 13.5; CI: 1.3-135.0). Among the laboratory findings, only lymphocytes and albumin were not associated with greater likelihood of death., Conclusion: The factors related with deaths were chronic kidney disease and previous heart disease, presence of fever, abdominal pain, apathy, dyspnea and arthritis and laboratory findings such as leukocytosis, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia and lymphopenia., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

This article aims to analyze the association between characteristics of death - type of certifier and place of death - and the odds of an external cause death being certified as unspecified in Brazil. Cross-sectional study of deaths due to external causes from the Mortality Information System, 2017. Unspecified external cause (UEC) is the outcome variable in the models. Type of certifier physician, place of death and the interaction of these variables were the explanatory variables. Confounders were controlled by multiple logistic regression. UEC were the initial underlying cause for 22% of the 159,720 deaths from external causes in Brazil and 31% of hospital deaths issued by coroners. After adjustment for confounders, the odds of UEC in a hospital death certified by a coroner was 98% greater (OR=1.98; 95%CI: 1.53; 2.56) than in a home/street death issued by another certifier. This was greater than the odds for certifications by coroners (OR=1.23; 95%CI: 1.14; 1.33) and hospital deaths (OR=1.44; 95%CI: 1.32; 1.58). External causes certified by coroners and/or occurring in hospitals have a higher presence of UEC than other deaths; and indicate the need for coordinated initiatives by the health and public security sectors.

Background: The risk of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) increases when preventive guidelines are not adhered to. However, studies have generally been quantitative and aimed at determining the effectiveness of CLABSI prevention bundles. Few studies have used a mixed-methods approach to investigate nursing professionals' knowledge and practices regarding CLABSI prevention., Purpose: To determine nursing professionals' knowledge and practices regarding CLABSI prevention and identify facilitators and barriers to adherence to CLABSI prevention strategies in a Brazilian neonatal intensive care unit., Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used. Nursing professionals answered questionnaires regarding knowledge and practices surrounding CLABSI prevention. Semistructured interviews explored barriers nursing professionals face that hinder adherence to CLABSI preventive practices., Findings: Nursing professionals had moderate knowledge regarding CLABSI prevention practices. Daily assessment of the continued need for central venous lines (CVLs), hub disinfection before and after handling, and hand hygiene before handling CVLs were practices less adhered to. Interviews revealed barriers to adherence to preventive practices included lack of adequate equipment, resources for hand hygiene, and inadequate physical structure. Increased education and awareness of safe CVL practices and accountability of the entire healthcare team may improve adherence to CLABSI prevention practices. Objective: To characterize the attitudes of Primary Health Care nurses, regarding the involvement of the family in the care for people with Mental Disorder., Methods: Correlational study with 257 nurses from the city of São Paulo. The scale "Importance of Families in Nursing Care- Nurses' Attitudes" was used. For the analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were used., Results: The scale scores were high, with a mean value of 82.1 (SD=8.4) favorable to the families' involvement, and are related to being a nurse in the Family Health Strategy (p<0.001), having received education/training in family nursing (p<0.005), the workload of 40 hours/week (p<0.005), working in the West, East and Center Regions (p<0.005)., Conclusion: Most nurses have positive attitudes towards the involvement of families, a relevant indicator for their inclusion in the health-mental care process.

In 2017, Epidemiology and Health Services: journal of the Brazilian National Health System (RESS) celebrates 25 years. RESS was created in 1992 as SUS Epidemiological Report (IESUS) and, in 2003, adopted its current name and format. This study's objectives are to describe the subjects covered and the geographical spread of authors' institutions of the articles published in IESUS and RESS; and to map RESS' editorial policies and strategies in the following areas of focus: education, information, communication, co-responsibility and anticipation. The comparison between IESUS (1992-2002) and RESS (2003-2016) periods revealed an increase in the number of documents published, as well as an increase in the topics covered, the geographical spread of the authors and the scope of publication. The mapping of editorial policies and strategies has evidenced a large number of initiatives aligned with the principles of publication ethics, which may have contributed to the development of the journal.

The increasing world production of biodiesel has resulted in an accumulation of crude glycerol as the major byproduct. This could be used as carbon source for industrial microbiology, with economic and environmental advantages for the biodiesel industry. We explored an Atlantic Rainforest soil sample to search for crude glycerol-degrading microorganisms. Microcosms of this soil were established containing minimal medium + 8% crude glycerol (w/w); the biological activity was measured by respirometry. High CO2 levels were found in some of the crude glycerol microcosms, suggesting the activity of microorganisms capable of degrading this residue. In an attempt to isolate and cultivate these microorganisms in vitro, aliquots of the soil suspension were plated on minimal medium containing 10% crude glycerol (v/v). Out of 19 morphologically distinct isolates, 12 bacteria and 6 yeasts were identified by PCR from universal primers 16S and 26S rDNA, respectively. Optical density readings revealed growth differences among cultures. Two yeasts and three bacteria with distinct growth profiles stood out and appeared to have potential for liquid fermentation of crude glycerol. The yeasts adapted rapidly, but produced relatively little biomass. Opposite tendencies were found in the bacteria. Amplicon sequencing placed the bacterial isolates as close to Staphylococcus arlettae, Pseudomonas citronellolis, and Bacillus megaterium, and the yeasts to Trichosporon moniliiforme and Meyerozyma guilliermondii. We concluded that these species have potential for use in crude glycerol bioreactors and for bioremediation processes.

Conversion of Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites to the bradyzoite stage and tissue cyst formation in the life cycle of the parasite have crucial roles in the establishment of chronic toxoplasmosis. In this work we investigated the in vitro cystogenesis and behavior of the EGS strain, isolated from human amniotic fluid. We observed that tachyzoites of the EGS strain converted to intracellular cysts spontaneously in LLC-MK2 epithelial cells, HSFS fibroblasts and C6 glial cell lineage. The peak of conversion occurred in the LLC-MK2 cells after 4days of infection, when 72.3±15.9 of the infected cells contained DBA positive cysts. Using specific markers against bradyzoite, tachyzoite and cyst wall components, we confirmed stage conversion and distinguished immature from mature cysts. It was also observed that the deposition of cyst wall components occurred before the total conversion of parasites. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the fully conversion of parasites presenting the typical characteristics of bradyzoites as the posterior position of the nucleus and the presence of amylopectin granules. A thick cyst wall was also detected. Besides, the scanning microscopy revealed that the intracyst matrix tubules were shorter than those from the parasitophorous vacuole intravacuolar network and were immersed in a granular electron dense material. The EGS strain spontaneously forms high burden of cysts in cell culture without artificial stress conditions, and constitutes a useful tool to study this stage of the T. gondii life cycle., (Copyright © 2012. Although increases in severity of mortality from dengue infection have been observed in Brazil, their determinants are not fully known. A case-control study was conducted by using the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, including patients with severe dengue during 2000-2005. Cases were defined as patients that died and controls were those who survived. Hierarchical multivariate logistic regression was performed. During the study period, there were 12,321 severe cases of dengue and 1,062 deaths. Factors independently associated with death included age ≥ 50 years (odds ratio [OR] = 2.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.59-3.29), < 4 years of schooling (OR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.47-2.28), a rural area (OR =2.84, 95% CI = 2.19-3.69), hospitalization (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.17-1.73), and a high hematocrit (OR = 2.46, 95% CI = 1.85-3.28). Factors associated with a lower chance of dying were female sex (OR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.67-0.87), history of previous dengue (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.62-0.99), positive tourniquet test result (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.33-0.66), laboratory diagnosis of dengue (OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.61-0.92), and a platelet count of 50,000-100,000 cells/mm(3) (OR = 0.56, 95% CI = 0.36-0.87). The risk profile identified in this study should serve to direct public health interventions to minimize deaths.

Swabs collected from the external ears of 942 cattle, including both European and zebu breeds, were used to evaluate the epidemiology of Malassezia species. High numbers of Malassezia isolates were significantly associated with maturity of the animals and with diagnosed otitis. In healthy animals, a particularly low prevalence of the genus was found in Holstein cows, especially in the summer months, a finding perhaps correlating with the open, air-exposed ears of this breed. Pendutlous-eared zebu breeds and hybrids had higher levels of colonization, although this effect was more pronounced in humid regions, and was least in the dry north and west of the state. The most common species seen was M. sympodialis, which accounted for 47.1% of isolates from healthy cattle and 39.1% from cattle with otitis. In cattle with otitis sampled in summer, we found that the relatively thermotolerant M. sympodialis made up 80.8% of isolates. By contrast, during the winter the less thermotolerant M. globosa was the most common species from otitis, making up 56% of the isolates. Humidity and temperature may be the main factors explaining the epidemiology of Malassezia diseases and colonizations in both animals and humans.

The occurrence of bovine external otitis in tropical regions is predominantly assigned to parasitic infections by rhabditiform nematodes and infestations by mites of the genus Raillietia. This research had the purpose of investigating the prevalence of parasitic otitis in the dry and rainy seasons of Minas Gerais and correlating it with variables age, breed and the presence of horns. The secretion or cerumen of 981 cattle was collected with sterile swabs, placed in test tubes and exposed to sunlight for the identification of clinical infections caused by rhabditiform nematodes. The ear canals of 109 animals were flushed to study the occurrence of mites of the genus Raillietia. Clinical otitis caused by rhabditiform nematodes was observed only in animals of the Gyr breed, affecting 169 (60.1%) of the total (278) of these cattle. The prevalence of otitis in this breed was significantly higher for mature adult cows (P<0.001) and in cows with horns (P<0.001). In a total of nine animals suspected of raillietiosis, the examinations revealed the presence of Raillietia spp. in two Dutch cows. These results demonstrate that treatment must be focused on adult Gyr cattle with horns. This and future studies with an emphasis on epidemiological aspects may contribute to development of alternative approaches to reduce disease.

Infestations by rhabditiform nematodes and acarids of the genus Raillietia are considered the primary causes of external otitis in cattle in tropical regions. Recently, yeasts of the genus Malassezia have been associated with a relatively high percentage of otitis cases, but the occurrence of other yeasts and mycelial fungi has not yet been reported in the literature. This work studied the presence of fungi in the ear canal of 45 cattle with external parasitic otitis. The results were positive for yeasts of the genus Malassezia in 31 (68.9%) of the 45 cultures in Mycosel medium supplemented with olive oil. The 45 cultures in Sabouraud dextrose medium revealed the growth of seven (15.5%) yeasts of the genus Candida, five (11.1%) Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, two (4.4%) fungi of the genus Aspergillus and eight 'Micelia sterilia'. Future studies may confirm and elucidate the importance of these agents in the aetiology of bovine otitis.

Yeasts of the genus Malassezia are lipophilic microorganisms that are saprophytes that can act as opportunistic pathogens in animals. Malassezia pachydermatis is commonly isolated from the ear canal and skin of healthy dogs, or in association with seborrheic dermatitis and otitis externa conditions. The objective of the present study was to determine the occurrence of Malassezia spp. in the ears of healthy bovines and bovines with otitis. Specimens (secretion or cerumen) were collected with sterile swabs, inoculated onto Mycosel medium, supplemented with olive oil, and incubated at 35 degrees C for 1 week. Yeasts were identified according to morphological characteristics, growth in Dixon medium at 32 degrees C and Sabouraud glucose medium modified by the addition of Tween 20, 40 or 80. The results showed that 54.7% of the cultures were positive in bovines with otitis (75) and 34.6% were positive in healthy bovines (378). Analysis of the positive cultures (41) from animals with otitis allowed presumptive identification of 24 strains corresponding to M. globosa (12), M. slooffiae (5), M. furfur (5) and M. sympodialis (2). Further studies on a larger number of animals may confirm the trend verified thus far, i.e. a higher frequency of isolation of Malassezia spp. from animals with otitis than from healthy animals (P<0.01) and a predominance of the species M. globosa.

The study intends to discuss the reality of nursing personnel planning, trying to describe the qualitative and quantitative variables that are involved in this process in hospitals of Porto Alegre city. In spite of numberless variables found, we can verify a great diversity between the criterious accepted by the nursing chief's and the inexistence of official criterious. The data analisys allowed grouping the variables in four main categories: hospital, nursing service, unit and clientele. To exist best utilization the quantitative variables related unit and clientele categories and restriction of autonomy nursing service to decide about this theme.

The authors have studied the right and left incidence of 30 non-metric infracranial variations in 2,103 dry bones of Brazilians and have concluded that the bilateral asymmetry is not significant in all but 2 traits: "The lateral tibial squatting facet" (X2 = 7.93) and "The peroneal tubercle present" (X2 = 20.35).

We measured the effect of marginal malnutrition on physical work capacity of adolescent children of agricultural migrant workers in Southern Brazil. Nutritional status was evaluated using 24-h dietary recall. Body size was evaluated anthropometrically. Biochemical assessments were also made. Physical work capacity (PWC170) was assessed by measuring heart rate, blood lactic acid levels, and oxygen consumption during submaximal bicycle ergometer work. The same tests were also carried out on a comparable group of local well-to-do boys of the same age in the same community who served as controls. The dietary results suggest that adolescent boys of migrant families were marginally malnourished. Their physical growth and development were retarded by at least 1 yr. They had significantly lower reserves of body fat and less muscle mass when compared with controls. Their Hb levels were normal. At the submaximal work loads measured (0, 25, 50, 75 W) the migrant children exhibited similar oxygen consumption and gross exercise efficiency as the control children, but achieved this work at a higher percentage of their maximum work capacity as shown by significantly higher heart rates for the same oxygen consumption. Higher blood lactic acid levels in the migrant children suggest that the available muscle mass was under greater stress to accomplish the same task. PWC170 was reduced one-third in the migrant children (migrant 643 +/- 162 kpm/min, control 905 +/- 345 kpm/min; p less than 0.005). These differences were largely associated with weight (migrant 20.6 +/- 5.9 kpm/min; control 18.8 +/- 4.3 kpm/kg/min; p greater than 0.1). These observations suggest that marginal as well as severe malnutrition affect physical work capacity at levels low enough to affect growth and development.
