Academic procrastination generates several problems and negative consequences both individually and collectively: low student performance, increased stress, negative effects on physical and mental health, and general waste of resources. Therefore, it demands to be studied and understood in its different forms, so that mitigating mechanisms can be developed. The current work seeks to analyse the phenomenon of academic procrastination within postgraduate students registered for the Management Postgraduate Program in a Brazilian Federal University, in order to identify strategies, techniques and tools utilised by the students to overcome procrastination as well as its relation with the concepts of self-regulation and self-efficacy. The current research is descriptive with a qualitative nature, adopting a phenomenological approach through thematic analysis in order to bring to light the experiences and perceptions of individuals from their own perspectives, challenging structural or normative assumptions. In total, 24 students, 12 from the master's degree program and 12 from the doctorate program in Management were interviewed. As a result, it was noticed that there are some overall inferences that can be taken from the narratives, outlining the phenomenon of academic procrastination and its relations with the concepts of self-regulation and self-efficacy, which led to reinforce the notion that the central elements to understand and specifically combat procrastination are related to the concepts of self-efficacy and self-regulation, which have a considerable influence on students' motivation, behaviour and habits. The research has also pointed to some key strategies, techniques and tools that can be utilised to support further applied research as well as to guide the faculty in supporting the students to overcome or mitigate the procrastination impulse, such as use of goal orientation, visual tools, and academic support starting with undergraduate degrees. The work has an original contribution as no research has been made on that topic utilising qualitative data through a phenomenological approach, which opens a vast and new path for future research.

Geographic education in recent years has undergone major transformations in school curricula, moving from a memorization practice to a critical reflection based on the students' local reality. This is included in official teaching documents. On the other hand, the application of this new approach to applicability problems, largely due to the lack of elements focused on teaching resources that facilitate this process or the training of professionalized teachers before this conceptual change. This is present in the Brazilian semi-arid region, with the insertion of coexistence contextualized with the semi-arid region in the quest to work on education along the lines of applicability of the student's knowledge. That said, we have such an objective here, providing some reflections to reach such a path, an active and participatory teaching.

Internationalisation of the curriculum (IoC) is typically approached very differently across national, institutional and disciplinary contexts. This paper reports on research on internationalisation of the curriculum in Latin America and discusses its potential to provoke disruptive innovation in higher education internationalisation. Traditionally, approaches to internationalisation of the curriculum in Latin American universities have been focused almost solely on student mobility programs. The research reported in this paper was conducted by a project team from Brazil and Australia in 2021-2022. A qualitative methodology was used. Methods included a tri-lingual literature review of scholarly publications on curriculum internationalisation in English, Portuguese and Spanish and a modified e-Delphi methodology with a panel of experts comprising international higher education scholars and practitioners working in Latin America (and conducted in Spanish, Portuguese and English). The purpose of the research was to identify ways in which existing approaches to internationalising the curriculum in Latin America might be enhanced in order to provide more students with opportunities to develop international perspectives and intercultural knowledge and skills. The research found that there is significant potential to achieve this outcome if the process of internationalising the curriculum is approached as a long-term project involving complex collaborative boundary work.

Violence is a major public health problem globally, with the highest rates in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the Americas and southern Africa. Parenting programmes in high-income countries can diminish risk for violence, by reducing risk factors such as child aggression and harsh parenting, and increasing protective factors such as child cognitive development and school readiness. However, there is critical need to identify low-cost programmes with replicable benefits that work in real-world LMICs contexts. A three-arm, randomised, single-blind trial evaluated effects of two low-cost, group-based parenting programmes recommended for LMICs (ACT: Raising Safe Kids; DBS: dialogic book-sharing) on child aggression (primary outcome), child development, parenting, maltreatment, and stress. Participants were 369 children with medium-high levels of aggression (mean age 3.1 years at baseline) in poor households. Interventions were implemented in city health and education services in southern Brazil. Maternal reports, filmed observations, child tasks, and hair cortisol were assessed at baseline, 1-month post-intervention, and 8-month follow-up. Intention-to-treat analyses compared each of ACT and DBS with a control group. Three hundred sixty-eight (99.7%) participants completed follow-up assessments 8 months after the interventions. There was no effect of ACT (standardised mean difference, SMD 0.11, 95% CI - 0.05, 0.27) or DBS (SMD 0.05, 95% CI - 0.11, 0.21) on the primary outcome of child aggression. ACT reduced harsh parenting behaviour post-intervention (SMD - 0.23; 95% CI - 0.46, 0.01), but not at follow-up. DBS improved book-sharing practices at both time points (e.g., maternal sensitivity at follow-up SMD 0.33; 95% CI 0.08, 0.57). There were no benefits of either programme for other parenting, child development, or stress outcomes. Two parenting programmes in Brazil had small effects on parenting practices but did not reduce child aggression or several other important risk/protective factors for violence. Effective early interventions that reduce violence in real-world LMIC settings are highly desirable but may be challenging to achieve.

The concept of value, in a context of higher education institutions (HEIs), simply refers to meeting or exceeding customer requirements and expectations. HEIs have a fundamental role in the dissemination of knowledge, in addition to developing new skills and awareness for future professionals, in relation to local, regional and national issues. The aim of this research is to analyse the academic activities and outcomes influence on value generation perception in a public university students' perspective. A survey, built from a structured questionnaire, was carried out in a Brazilian HEI, the Federal University of Santa Maria, with students who are in their course final stage. Data collection came out with a valid sample of 389 respondents. It was analysed using descriptive statistics, exploratory factor and regression analyses. The findings suggest that among the services and resources that the university may offer to its students, the ones that present the most impact refer to cognitive and social abilities emerging from specific teaching practices and strategies from the professors. This research presents useful insights and applicable elements from which public managers can utilize to enhance engagement, create value and build a more rigorous and relevant practice.

This research seeks to understand the determinants of student dropout in the courses offered at the Open University of Brazil system at the Federal University of Santa Maria. The research used the following methods: survival function, factorial analysis, and logistic function. Results indicated that male students, with higher levels of income, who live a greater distance from the pole and who travel to it more frequently have a higher probability to drop out. Conversely, greater agreement with the adequacy of academic aspects and lower technological difficulties reduce the chance of dropout. Contrary to the evidence, the adequacy of the nonacademic aspects, which refer to the infrastructure, equipment, and functioning of the hubs, increases the likelihood of dropout. However, e variation in the dropout due to the non-academic aspects of the pole is much smaller than the distance and frequency of going to the pole. Therefore, we suggested that the increase in face-to-face activities has a greater impact on the probability of dropout than the physical conditions of the pole.

The contents taught in the programming subjects have a great relevance in the formation of computing students. However, these subjects are characterized by high failure rates, as they require logical reasoning and mathematical knowledge. Thus, establishing knowledge through the subject of algorithms can help students to overcome these difficulties and absorb the contents and skills required. Thus, this work aims to present and discuss the results of a second experiment on the application of a teaching plan composed of several active methodologies (Virtual Learning Environments, Coding Dojo, Gamification, Problem-Based Learning, Flipped Classroom and Serious Games) in an algorithms subject. Based on this experiment, it was evaluated whether there were learning gains compared to the learning acquired with the traditional method. Finally, an analysis was performed using the two-tailed Student-t approach, used for independent samples, which presented statistically significant results.

This systematic review explores the intersection of race, gender, and social class in the context of internationalization of higher education (IHE) research in Brazil. Historically, the development of the Brazilian educational system has responded to the elite's demands and reproduced Western-European values and knowledge. The exponential growth of IHE has led to increased scholarly interest in various interdisciplinary research areas, with a possible move in studies and practices from a neoliberal to a more critical, decolonial, and diverse perspective. This article aims to investigate to what extent Brazilian researchers have investigated the intersectionality of gender, race, and class in IHE. Using two scientific databases, the published between 2015 and 2022. The theoretical framework of intersectionality (Crenshaw, 2002; Collins & Bilge, 2021; Akotirene, 2019) is presented to help recognize the interaction of different social markers of inequalities in IHE. The results pointed to a small number of publications related to this theme and continuous interest in the Science without Borders (SwB) mobility program. A particularly privileged profile of participants in academic mobility programs across various higher education institutions (HEI) in Brazil demonstrated the need for planning and actions to understand the social, historical, and political aspects that perpetuate exclusions. Moreover, this review indicates the importance of addressing colonialism in social dynamics and recognizing the coloniality of power in language policies in IHE. It calls for further investigations that explore the intersections of social markers in IHE processes from a more politically engaged perspective.

The internationalization of higher education has changed over time due to government programs and incentives. In response to these demands, universities have sought to develop internationalization actions that encompass the entire university community. This article aims to analyze the internationalization strategies contained in the plans and policies of Brazilian higher education institutions (HEIs) that participate in the Institutional Internationalization Program -- CAPES PrInt Program. It is a qualitative study, conducted from documentary research, and data processing was carried out based on content analysis. Data analysis showed five priority areas: Teaching; Language Policies; Research; Outreach, Culture and Art and Management. Among internationalization strategies developed by HEIs in Brazil, no predominant internationalization model exists, but the coexistence between the different forms of internationalization characterizes the search for an identity that reflects the features of Brazilian higher education. The results reveal the direction that Brazilian HEIs are taking toward the institutionalization of internationalization and its contribution to the consolidation of the field of internationalization of higher education.

We aimed to investigate the impact of smartphone use during intertrial intervals within a distributed practice regime on mental fatigue, performance, and learning of a balance motor skill. One hundred and thirty-six participants were randomly divided into two groups: the smartphone use group (SMARTPHONE) and the control group (CONTROL). The SMARTPHONE accessed social media during the rest periods within a distributed practice of a balance task, whereas the CONTROL rested passively during the rest periods. The participants practiced the toe-touch task. The participants underwent a pretest consisting of one trial. Subsequently, the participants were engaged in practice, completing six trials interspersed with 2-min intervals of either rest or smartphone use. Following the practice phase, a posttest was conducted, and after 24 hr, we administered a retention test and a transfer test. The number of touches and the number of errors (contacting the ground with the free leg to regain balance) were performance measures. We evaluated the participants' mental fatigue after the practice session using a visual analog scale. The groups demonstrated similar mental fatigue after practice. Our results suggest that using social media on smartphones during rest periods within a distributed practice impairs performance but not motor learning.

Contribution: This work seeks to ascertain the validity of a remote-controlled experiment of the Physics Remote Lab in the educational context, specifically among students from engineering courses. Background: In 2012, it has been started the development of the Physics Remote Lab at the Federal University of Itajubá, Brazil, a laboratory with a collection of didactical remote-controlled experiments. For a while since then, efforts have been directed mainly to technical matters and so, many questions regarding the effectiveness of these experiments as a teaching resource have not been satisfactorily answered yet. The restrictions imposed by the pandemic have provided suitable conditions to assess the effectiveness of this kind of resource. Research Questions: There are two points to be addressed. The first refers to whether remotely controlled experiments can be regarded as a valid didactical tool. The second seeks to ascertain the effectiveness of these digital objects in a very atypical scenario. Methodology: A pretest-intervention-posttest design was chosen, with three groups that totaled 145 students from engineering courses. The groups were submitted to interventions based on a remote-controlled experiment, video analysis, and simulation on kinematics. Nonparametric statistical tests were applied to check for biased groups and to compare the results before and after the intervention. Findings: The results show that all three interventions had a significant impact on the groups and the established I-index suggests that the effects were positive in all of them, despite the peculiar circumstances regarding the pandemic. Compared to other groups, the results for the remote-controlled experiment group showed that it can be as effective as a simulation or a video analysis and the students in this group achieved a better understanding of the concepts as compared to their performance on the pretest.

Microcephaly presents heterogeneous genetic etiology linked to several neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). Copy number variants (CNVs) are a causal mechanism of microcephaly whose investigation is a crucial step for unraveling its molecular basis. Our purpose was to investigate the burden of rare CNVs in microcephalic individuals and to review genes and CNV syndromes associated with microcephaly. We performed chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) in 185 Brazilian patients with microcephaly and evaluated microcephalic patients carrying < 200 kb CNVs documented in the DECIPHER database. Additionally, we reviewed known genes and CNV syndromes causally linked to microcephaly through the PubMed, OMIM, DECIPHER, and ClinGen databases. Rare clinically relevant CNVs were detected in 39 out of the 185 Brazilian patients investigated by CMA (21%). In 31 among the 60 DECIPHER patients carrying < 200 kb CNVs, at least one known microcephaly gene was observed. Overall, four gene sets implicated in microcephaly were disclosed: known microcephaly genes; genes with supporting evidence of association with microcephaly; known macrocephaly genes; and novel candidates, including OTUD7A, BBC3, CNTN6, and NAA15. In the review, we compiled 957 known microcephaly genes and 58 genomic CNV loci, comprising 13 duplications and 50 deletions, which have already been associated with clinical findings including microcephaly. We reviewed genes and CNV syndromes previously associated with microcephaly, reinforced the high CMA diagnostic yield for this condition, pinpointed novel candidate loci linked to microcephaly deserving further evaluation, and provided a useful resource for future research on the field of neurodevelopment.

The gymnastics' environment has been criticised for producing uncompromising coaching practices, emotional disorders, harassment and abuse. Furthermore, the challenges faced by the young gymnasts can be acute when they live in gymnastics boarding schools, where many aspects of their lives are controlled. Drawing upon a Foucauldian lens, this study explores power relations in the lived experiences of former artistic gymnasts who trained in a gymnastics boarding school in Brazil, and the pedagogical and policy implications. Qualitative data were produced from semi-structured interviews with five former Brazilian artistic gymnasts, who described their everyday lives within and around the gymnastics boarding school. First, we explore how technologies of dominance produced a specific docile gymnast subjectivity and how this subjectivation process impacted the lived experiences of the gymnasts during their careers. Second, Foucault's later work on the technologies of the self helps us in the microanalysis of how gymnasts negotiated the process of moving out of a space with specific discourses and power relations, that impacted their everyday lives. In so doing, we explore the tensions between technologies of domination and technologies of self. We propose the following pedagogical and policy implications: (a) we question the notion that coaches, and even the gymnastics environment, automatically prepare the gymnasts for 'real life' through the application of disciplinary strategies; (b) we advocate for shifting from coercive and punitive strategies to discipline strategies that consider responsive pedagogies and (c) we highlight the importance of the co-responsibility and co-surveillance of stakeholders. Such pedagogical and policy implications might contribute to reflections in gymnastics, in elite athletes' programmes, and boarding school systems.

It is essential that concepts surrounding species interactions and their importance for biodiversity conservation are widely taught and understood. Incorporating playfulness into ecological education initiatives can attract more interest in these aspects of ecology. Over the last three decades Pokémon has engaged with millions of people by replicating many aspects of real-world wildlife in cartoons and games. Studies have speculated how the Pokémon franchise creates opportunities for didactic purposes. This study aims to identify the potential for ecological interactions portrayed in the Pokémon universe to contribute to children's engagement and learning. We first gathered information on all the ecological interactions described among Pokémon 'species' from the franchise's website. We found 150 Pokémon species engaging in an array of different ecological interactions. We tested the use of Pokémon as a teaching tool about ecological interactions to high-school students aged [greater than or equal to] 18 years. The use of Pokémon significantly increased learning of almost half of ecological interactions and raised engagement, particularly among students who like the franchise. Our findings show that Pokémon can be a playful and didactic tool for teaching about ecological interactions.

This article presents and analyzes general and specific data from a survey carried out in four news media on the subject of human rights (HD). The investigation was guided by qualitative principles and content analysis in the documents found in the journalistic platforms: Brasil de Fato, O Dia, Folha de S. Paulo and Veja. In total, 112 news items were tabulated over seven weeks and organized into 12 topics and grouped into two axes: equality and difference. As a result, the study showed that the human rights agenda is not explicitly addressed on news platforms; the Brasil de Fato platform was the only one with a specific tab for the theme; there is a need to understand media education as one of the fundamental "arms" of human rights education.

This paper investigates the intersection of income and race in structuring access to higher education among students that participate in a national high-stakes exam in Brazil. Our objectives are (1) to estimate the probability of students coming from different income strata, racial groups, and performance levels to access higher education and (2) to decompose income and racial effects into direct (net of educational performance) and indirect effects (through educational performance). Our data comes from a panel of high school graduates tracked between 2012 and 2017 and allow us to describe the following findings. Firstly, the probability of entering higher education is always higher among candidates from higher income strata. Second, there is a convergence in admission probabilities across the performance scale. Third, the admission curve across a performance scale is much steeper among applicants from low-income strata compared to richer students. In all of these results, students self-identified as black, brown, or indigenous (BBI) are less likely to transition to higher education than whites, even though they are in the same income and performance strata. We suggest that students from privileged socioeconomic backgrounds benefit from alternative entry strategies, such as paying tuition at less competitive private colleges. For students from low-income strata, the main alternative for entering higher education is through high academic performance. By decomposing racial effects, we show the cumulative effect of racial stratification; the gap between white and BBI students is both related to higher propensity of transitioning to higher education and higher educational performance.

This study assessed the knowledge, feelings, and life experiences of students in public middle schools in the Brazilian Amazon toward aquatic mammals by applying semi-structured interviews, with a qualitative-quantitative approach. A total of 241 students, from all genders, aged between 12 and 14 years old, from four public schools of Pará State were interviewed. The data were transcribed and analyzed in an inductive way, in dialog with the literature of scientific education and ethnozoology. This methodology was developed and validated during the doctorate research of the first author of this paper. The students showed a rich knowledge, feelings, and life experiences regarding the Amazonian aquatic mammals, those related to biological, morphological, behavioral, ecological, and taxonomic aspects, as well as the threat to these species. The research reveals the need for schools of the region to develop and use didactic resources and strategies for intercultural dialogue in science classes, favoring the development of reflective attitudes in students and promoting decision-making favorable to the conservation of aquatic mammals.

The present study aims to understand how the professional vision of prospective teachers (PTs) regarding whole-class reflective discussion develops as they explore a multimedia case (MC) in a mathematics teacher education course. The data come from the written productions of seven groups of PTs (N=15) related to whole-class discussion of one 6th grade lesson in two sections of the MC: first, they have focused on the teacher's lesson plan and on her intentions for the whole-class discussion aiming at the students' algebraic thinking; and in the second, they have analysed two video episodes of that lesson phase. The results show an integrated development of two processes of PTs' professional vision -- noticed events and the nature of the reasoning about them -- with significant evolution from one section to another as they explore the MC. The study shows PTs' alternative ways of accessing and making sense of the complexity of both ambitious and authentic teaching practices that can also be employed in at distance teacher education and mitigate the consequences of the impossibility to access the classrooms, such as that resulting from the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

In this paper, we sought to analyze if the internet and social networks usage could be impacting the constitution of an assertive political culture among young people in South Brazil. We hypothesize that although these new socialized agents are widespread among the young, apathy and disinterest in politics remain. To test our hypothesis, we analyzed data from a survey conducted with secondary school students from Porto Alegre in 2015 and 2019 for values related to democracy, feelings about politics, responsiveness, and political efficacy. Results confirm that the political culture of the young remains apathetic, but those socialized by new agents seem to be closer to developing an assertive type of political culture.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted society in different areas. In education, several reports show the deleterious effects of the disease on the physical and mental health of students, family members, and teachers around the world. Also, in Brazil, affect studies indicate the prevalence of anxiety, stress, and depression among students. The present research, of a qualitative nature, explores what it means, under the lens of affect and from the student's perspective, to experience remote education during the COVID-19 pandemic. An online questionnaire of 41 closed- and open-ended questions was given to 363 students from a public school in southeastern Brazil. This article analyzes the affective fields that emerged from the discursive textual analysis of the students' responses (n = 100). Four affective fields were categorized: friends, classes, home, and teachers; intersecting emotions, attitudes, values, beliefs, and motivation. In general, students expressed more negative than positive affect but a positive disposition toward face-to-face classes. Boys focused their affect more on classes, while girls on teachers. The affective fields allow us to consider the friends-home-teachers tripod as fundamental to overcoming the phenomenon of affective fatigue that has been identified.

Background: Preschool is a crucial period for developing motor skills. Objective: This study evaluated factors associated with motor competence in preschoolers from a Brazilian urban area. Methods: A total of 211 preschoolers (51.2% girls and 48.8% boys) were evaluated. Body mass index was calculated; the Brazilian Economic Research Criterion, the Mini-Mental Scale (MMC) and the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale®, Revised (ECERS-R™) were applied; the Habitual Physical Activity time was recorded; the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD-2) was performed. Univariate analysis was performed using simple linear regression for the independent variables, considering the motor test subscales as dependent variables. Variables with p < 0.20 in the univariate analysis were considered for the multiple linear regression model and were entered into the stepwise method. Results: The independent variables remaining in the Standard Score Locomotor model were BMI, presence of park at school, and MMC (R[superscript 2] = 0.16). The independent variables remaining in the Standard Object Control score were MMC and gender (R[superscript 2] = 0.03). The variables associated with the highest scores of Gross Motor Quotient were MMC, body mass index, and presence of a park at school, respectively (R[superscript 2] = 0.11). Conclusions: Male eutrophic preschoolers who are physically active and attend schools with parks or courtyards in a Brazilian urban area have the highest scores for global cognitive function and motor competence.

In this paper we situate a discussion of the decolonial curriculum within the context of a Brazilian postgraduate programme (MPEJA) focused on adult and youth education (EJA). We draw on the work of Paulo Freire in our discussion of decolonial thinking and its pedagogical representation within EJA in Brazil. We suggest that engagement with the programme provides legitimacy and visibility for participants, supporting them in revealing the diversity and specificity of EJA (Cardoso, 2017). MPEJA also counters decolonial thought through the possibilities it provides to EJA educators for reflection on their professional context and the socio-economic influences on the experiences of their EJA students.

Contribution: This work evaluates the role of the complementary training programs (CTPs) offered by the Center for Research and Development in Electronic and Information Technology (CETELI), from the Federal University of Amazonas, Brazil. This analysis highlights the relevant role of the CTP, carried out by CETELI, in supporting students in the engineering undergraduate course, thus reducing dropouts and improving retention of low-income students. Background: The great challenge of engineering courses and of all courses in the technological area is to keep in step with the job market and, thus, provide better conditions for entering trainees. Intended Outcomes: Based on the experience of this work, other electrical engineering courses should be encouraged to adopt partnerships with industries, offering the possibility for students to carry out project activities on topics of interest to industries and, especially in developing countries like Brazil, to associate this activity with the provision of scholarships. Application Design: The evaluation assesses the impact of the various CTP partnership projects (PPs) on the graduation rate (GR), on students' academic performance, and on the average graduation time (GT). It also assesses how the CTP students entered the job market, measuring whether the CTP facilitated their entry. Findings: It was observed a difference in the GR between the students who participated in the CTP and students that did not participate in the CTP. For the computer engineering course, this rate was about five times higher. It was observed that more than half of the students who participated in the CTP entered the market and were hired almost immediately for work in their area of training.

This paper aims to analyze the temporary teachers' hiring policy in Cametá, during the last two municipal administrations (2013-2020). The main focus is the interface between disputes for local power and the municipal administration of education. This is a case study using a qualitative approach, employing the procedures of documental analysis, interviews, participant observation, and a survey for data collection. Our theoretical framework was based on understandings from the anthropology of politics, with the concept of "clientelism" as the central analytical category. Moreover, we draw from literature that centers research done from a municipal perspective. The results indicate that the practice of hiring temporary teachers occurs mainly in schools in the rural area, being based on clientelist relationships. Several actors are involved in the hiring process and these clientelist relationships, with emphasis on city council members, school principals, and temporary teachers. Furthermore, the precarization of the labor of temporary teachers was observed, with recurring delayed salaries and months worked without payment. The performance of the public prosecutor's office proved to be insufficient in a scenario of non-compliance with the legal framework that regulates the teaching profession in the Brazilian education system.

For a long time within the history of education, it has been assumed that science classrooms are homogeneous spaces, constituted with the prevailing conception that only scientific culture can be represented. At the same time, Latin America is characterized by being a region with enormous biological and cultural diversity, with an invaluable biocultural heritage. Building on an interpretative hermeneutical analysis of science teachers' discourses from Brazil and Colombia, we explore the potential of science education to engage with the cultural diversity in science classrooms through the lens of Freire's concept of dialogue. Developing the concept of intercultural dialogue, we identify the teachers' conceptions about the nature of science (NOS), and how they perceive the relationship between scientific and nonscientific knowledge that students bring with them in the process of science teaching and learning. This approach denotes potential tensions and challenges to incorporating and interpreting different knowledge, but it is a necessary process in the development of an emancipatory intercultural, non-dualist, nonhierarchical education.

This paper resulted from an unfolding of an ongoing doctoral research that deals with the characterization of a specific type of arithmetic in times of Brazilian industrial education, that is, between 1942 and 1968. The objective is to analyze knowledge produced by Roberto Mange for training, aiming not only to recognize them as such, but also to situate the social place of the producing agent, Roberto Mange, an "expert" in industrial education. The concepts mobilized are in line with the studies by Hofstetter, Schneuwly and Freymond (2017), and the methodological guidelines of Morais (2020). The research reveals that Roberto Mange introduced in Brazil new ways of teaching Mathematics, using the Occupational Methodological Series, the Instruction Sheets, and the Individualized Instruction Method. The conclusion is that Roberto Mange is an "expert" in industrial education.

The aim of the present work was to investigate the processing of coreferential relations, focusing on their relationship with the working memory. In a reading process, it is essential that readers continuously perform mental operations that involve the working memory, such as storing, retrieving, and manipulating information. For this reason, it is understood that the processing of coreference resolution is closely related to the working memory. In this relationship between memory and anaphora resolution, the distance factor between the referent and anaphor can play a significant role as distance increases the processing costs when reading sentences. It is known that the working memory is limited; yet there is still no consensus among researchers regarding the nature of storable items. Moreover, the syntactic node, here taken as a representative of the structure of a phrase, was observed as possible storage and recoverable unit in the working memory. Thus, the objective of the study was to verify whether the syntactic distance factor, embeddings with one and two intervening syntactic nodes, is a storable unit in the working memory, investigating its influence in the processing of different anaphora resolution. The self-paced reading experimental technique was used in an experiment. Seventy participants, all university students, were tested individually and underwent a training session before the task. The results suggest that the syntactic distance is a relevant factor in the working memory with significant differences between conditions with syntactic distance concerning those with linear distance, indicating the formation of chunks. There was an increase in reading times depending on the number of intervening embeddings, and different processing costs for each type of anaphora resolution investigated.

Recent international documents and educational standards have recommended Science Education be based on three dimensions (Scientific Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas). This has resulted in an increased interest in research involving Scientific Practices in Science Education. The objectives of this article are to: I) Identify the scientific practices that high school students engaged in during a thematic workshop; and II) Discuss the use of thematic workshops as an approach to promote Scientific Practices. The workshop was developed based on the Science, Technology and Society approach and aimed at discussing the composition, properties and effectiveness of male contraceptives. The workshop was conducted in a public school in Southern Brazil and the workshop footage and student questionnaires were analyzed according to Content Analysis. Three transcriptions of classroom situations are presented to discuss the promotion of Scientific Practices in specific classroom contexts. The analyses show that students engaged in six of the eight Scientific Practices discussed by the National Research Council. The results contribute to international discussions on Scientific Practices and discussions regarding the use of thematic workshops as an approach to promote Scientific Practices.

In the light of the connectivism theory, the objective was to analyze the perception of use and satisfaction of accounting students about Edpuzzle, a digital video application. This tool was employed in four accounting courses using the cell phones of 92 students. A questionnaire was administered on-site and was structured in two parts. The first contained questions about the respondent's profile, and the second about the use and satisfaction with Edpuzzle. The results indicated that students liked to use Edpuzzle and felt satisfied, especially those under 21 years old. We also noticed significant correlations among the questions. For example, the positive association between interactivity and appropriateness of use of the Edpuzzle stands out. It is concluded, therefore, that the results corroborate the connectivism theory, which sustains that knowledge must suffer updates as the environment changes and that sharing is crucial for the creation of networks that feed each other. Edpuzzle helps in this regard.

In this study, we evaluate an innovative method to improve the teaching of linear algebra. The use of peer instruction in conjunction with a seminar strategy and supported by didactic engineering is proposed as a means to facilitate the mastery of abstract concepts, the undertaking of innovative research in problem solving, and the practical application of educational concepts. To assess the method's effectiveness, the Students' Evaluation of Educational Quality (SEEQ) questionnaire was administered and assessed. In addition, to determine whether this new teaching approach leads to better learning results than the traditional method, a comparison between control and experimental groups was conducted. The results indicate that the mixed method creates a more dynamic learning environment for students than the traditional method, contributes to students' development of social interaction skills and learning process. In sum, the proposed method has been shown to enhance student motivation and reflection, which are critical to a productive, collaborative learning environment that directly impacts academic retention and performance.

This study examined the within- and between-day variability of time-segmented sedentary behavior (SB), light physical activity (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in adolescents. The sample comprised 154 adolescents (11-16 years old) from two public schools in Florianópolis, Brazil. The proportion of time spent in SB, LPA, and MVPA was measured using Actigraph GT3X+ accelerometers for the following weekday time segments: before school (07:00-07:59), school time (08:00-11:59), after school (12:00-12:59), afternoons (13:00-17:59), and evenings (18:00-23:00). Participants were more active during commuting-related time segments. Females showed lower MVPA than males during school time, afternoons, and evenings, but not before school and after school. Higher age was associated with higher SB and lower LPA during school time, afternoons, and evenings, and slightly lower MVPA during afternoons. The variability of SB, LPA, and MVPA for all time segments was mainly explained by within-participant day-to-day variations rather than between-participant differences of daily-averaged estimates.

This article addresses the issue of racial inequality in Brazil, specifically within the education system. We present statistical data highlighting the disparities between White and Black students regarding illiteracy rates, school attendance, and learning outcomes. We argue that traditional economic frameworks have difficulty incorporating racial issues in their analyses of inequality and call for increased academic research on the subject. Our discussion shows that these disparities are perpetuated by cyclical and historical processes that produce and reproduce various forms of racism. We also introduce the concept of "racial rules" to understand better how formal and informal rules have been institutionalized and employed to promote or hinder racial equity. The article outlines a typology of racial rules, including exclusionary, inclusionary, and nonrules, and uses it to analyze the historical evolution of public education policies in Brazil. To illustrate how formal educational rules perpetuate conditions of stagnation for the Black population in education, the article examines two periods in Brazilian history.

The objective of this study was to analyze visual representations of redox reactions and related content in four Brazilian secondary school chemistry textbooks. The study aimed to identify which representations were used and to evaluate how these representations were linked to one another and to the main text. Data were analyzed regarding representational levels and the degree of relatedness between the different levels and the main text. Further analysis focused on the intended function of images and which curriculum orientation they indicated. The sample was comprised of 286 visual representations. The results showed that most of the visual representations merely served a decorative function and were not explicitly used to further understanding of the content in the main text. The findings indicated that the textbooks in this sample prioritized two separate levels of representation: The macroscopic and the symbolic. Only a few submicroscopic and multilevel representations could be found. The textbook illustrations indicated a strong "structure of the discipline" orientation of the curriculum, which was illustrated with orientations taken from everyday life, technology, and industry. It emphasizes the importance of using illustrations in textbooks, because of its influence on the construction of concepts, in particular the concept of redox reactions. Based on this research, it is possible for chemistry teachers to observe the limitation of these materials and carefully select the textbook used in their curricula. Moreover, the results can contribute to improving the quality of textbooks.

This text seeks to analyze the privatization guidelines both globally and at the local level and their deployment in public basic education in Brazil. For that, a bibliographic and documentary study was used, using only public domain. It is possible to diagnose the double movement of endo and exoprivatization carried out in the educational panorama of Brazil, especially through the insertion of large business groups, as well as the reforms undertaken to put into operation the privatization agenda of public basic education. It is observed that the insertion of the private sector into the spaces of human formation reverberate metamorphoses, including that of the social function of the school institution, since it incorporates a link with the business and financial logic and, consequently, will facilitate a loss of the public sense of education as a social right.

This study briefly reports on a range of conflicts involving teaching work in joint-stock higher education organizations which trade shares in [B]3 stock market, especially Ânima, Estácio, Kroton and Ser Educacional. After the systematic organization of empirical observations, we defined our object through a methodology specific to the investigation of social conflicts. The study resulted in a list of conflicts based on news articles which mentioned conflicts in these organizations between 2009 and 2018. A total of 102 articles about 56 conflicts led to the identification of some common issues experienced by professors in these companies, such as pedagogical reforms aimed at favoring online courses, overcrowded classrooms and dismissals. The research proceeds to characterize these corporations based on Brazil's Higher Education Census, the stock market's website and selected companies' websites, besides specialized magazines and newspapers. Analyzing conflicts leads us to conclude about an array of changes caused by financial control over teaching establishments.

The article aims to present an excerpt from the research that investigates knowledge to teach arithmetic in practical classes in teacher training courses. More precisely, we are looking for traces of prescriptions of practices at a knowledge systematization level that we seek to objectify in a set of articles from the journal "A Eschola Publica" (1893-1894 and 1896-1897), which later became the book "A Eschola Publica: ensaio de Pedagogia Prática," published in 1895 by Typographia Paulista. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Normal Schools in Brazil had attached to them, what was called a Model School, which was designed to disseminate teaching practices aligned with the renewal of the pedagogical methods and constituted the training model for teachers who taught mathematics in early childhood education. In theoretical and methodological terms, this research is based on Certeau's writing ofthe history (2010) and Chartier's cultural history (1990), considering Chervel's history of the disciplines (1990) and Julia' school environment (2001). The analysis is based on the studies of the Swiss Research Group on Social History of Education (ERHISE), which focused on socio-historical research on teacher education. For Hofstetter & Valente (2017), the objectified knowledge is that which is given to us as natural and necessary, usually imposed by a group that starts to say the same thing, establishing a consensus. The analysis of two articles from "A Eschola Publica" shows that knowledge for teaching is structured and incorporates the current pedagogical vacancies in articulation with the knowledge to teach.

Through the historical analysis of Dienes' works and through the suggestions of activities, the objective of this text is to understand the movement of systematization of knowledge for teaching and to teach classification, ranking, and ordination through the use of logical blocks during the Modern Mathematics Movement (1960-1980), a time of transformations in the structure and teachings of mathematics characterized by the circulation of educational experiences, which recommended the use of logical blocks as facilitators in the materialization of abstract ideas. To assist in this study, we bring references mobilized in works from the Research Team in the History of Educational Sciences (ERHISE), from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Such references seek to historically understand the professional knowledge of teaching, objectified in legislation, programs, curriculum, decrees, among others with regard to the knowledge to teach and for teaching. The study suggests that one of the objectified knowledges in Brazilian programs, is the way to approach the logical-mathematical structures in a concrete way, that is, with the use of logical blocks to build and materialize knowledge referring to the logical structures of classification, ranking and ordination.

The development of teacher education focusing on reflective practice as well as the study of pre-service teacher reflections are educational concerns. This research seeks to categorize the levels and the nature of pre-service Chemistry teachers' reflections in a public university in Southern Brazil. For this, autoscopies of the pre-service teachers' microteachings were conducted in a supervised internship discipline. Data were collected through an open questionnaire and with the autoscopies of their microteachings. The analytical procedures were performed according to Content Analysis, from which the results show that the pre-service teachers engaged in three distinct levels of reflection: technical descriptions, deliberate reflections and critical reflections when thinking about their own microteaching experiences. By analysing the nature of the reflections, six categories emerged; reflections on: class planning; their teaching; the objectives; personal aspects; the autoscopy; and the students. The research results showed a low incidence of critical reflections, presenting the possible difficulty pre-service teachers had in this level of reflection. The Reflective Intervention proved to be useful for promoting reflections of the three levels of reflection, especially level 2 reflections, which consists of deliberate reflections. The results and analyses of this study contribute to the research in reflective teacher education in science, specifically in regards to a greater understanding of the levels and nature of pre-service teachers' reflections and the use of reflective interventions as an approach to promote critical and deliberate reflections in science teacher education.

The large rates of students' failure is a very frequent problem in undergraduate courses, being even more evident in exact sciences. Pointing out the reasons of such problem is a paramount research topic, though not an easy task. An alternative is to use Educational Data Mining techniques (EDM), which enables one to convert data from educational database into useful information, in order to understand and improve teaching and learning processes. In this way, the objective of this paper is to propose mathematical models based on EDM techniques to estimate the probability of a student in a mathematics degree course at IFSP (Federal Institute of São Paulo) to fail in exact sciences disciplines, and later on, indicate which aspects contribute significantly for the Students' failure rates in these branches. We present three logistic regression models that which were applied based on socioeconomic data and student performance over 4 years. For interpretation and evaluation of such models, odds ratio, ten-fold Cross Validation method and the metrics: accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and area under the ROC curve (AUC) were used. It was noted that through Cross Validation, the models achieved accuracy values accounting for over 70%, sensitivity over 70%, specificity over 60% and AUC over 0.75. Analyzing the predictive variables of these models, we identified that factors such as advantage age, rates of failure through the course and attendance in initial semesters can increase the probability of failure in exact science disciplines in the analyzed course.

The increasing use of, and dependence on, Information Technology (IT) to support operational teaching, research, and management activities in Higher Education Institutions (HEI)--mainly due to their multi-unit organizational structure--have evidenced the need of encouraging managers to focus more on IT Governance (ITG) effectiveness, which has been an issue for many of these institutions. In this sense, we aim to develop a specific ITG model for Higher Education Institutions, by following the methodological principles of Design Science Research (DSR). The model was developed based on a robust theoretical basis that took into account different approaches substantiated by both the alignment of good practices and ITG focus areas as well as addressing the current ITG context of the Brazilian higher education institutions. The validation of the ITG model was based on its presentation to members of the IT Steering Committee of a Brazilian HEI, who confirmed its usefulness and applicability.

Working memory training (WMT) for children has received great attention in recent scientific investigations. However, evidence on program efficacy is still sparse. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a WMT software program ("Programa de Ativação da Memória de Trabalho" [PRAMEMT]) in promoting gains on cognitive and school related abilities. To investigate its effect, 78 school children attending 1st to 5th grades (52.6% girls; mean age = 7.87 years; SD = 1.44) were randomly allocated to a control (n = 37) or an experimental (n = 41) group. The children participated in five intervention sessions. The control group answered questions related to the same animals and themes featured in the PRAMEMT, but unrelated to working memory. The results suggested that there were gains in the performance intelligence quotient (p < 0.05; d = -0.54) and phonological awareness (p < 0.05; d = -0.52) in the experimental group; however, there was no change in overall cognitive performance. Possible mechanisms for these findings are discussed.

This paper discusses how the construction of citizenship and citizen identities takes place among young students in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Considering that education is responsible for fostering the sense of citizenship, this research asked 209 students from a public high school to write letters to a future Brazilian president and to answer an online survey on politics, democracy, and citizenship. Using the Thematic Analysis method, this paper investigates the content of these letters and the answers regarding presidential activities. The responses to both exercises express generic notions and unsuitable speeches regarding politics as well as a feeling of disbelief. It is argued that school education does not develop citizens who can perform their civic roles in society and that such detachment of the students may be a consequence of their incredulity toward politics, resulting in a narrow understanding of the matter.

We present and discuss the results of qualitative research based on a case study with biology undergraduate students from a public University of Bahia state, Brazil. The objective was to identify the influence of practical experiences involving ethnobiology applied to science teaching on intercultural dialogue into their initial training. To collect data, undergraduate students were asked to construct narratives revealing the influences of ethnobiology into their training as future teachers. Data were analyzed according to Bardin (1977) and supported by specific literature from the fields of science education and teaching. The thematic categories generated lead us to conclude that the undergraduates of biology teaching made reflections that allowed them to build opinions with meanings that should influence their pedagogical practices with intercultural dialogue. We recommend further studies involving ethnobiology and the training of biology teachers, with a larger sample of participants and the methodological and theoretical procedures of this science. Improvements could be made in biology teacher education curricula that encourage respect and consideration of cultural diversity. We highlight that it is imperative for teacher education courses to generate opportunities for on-site practical experience, in addition to the theory used in the classroom.

According to the National Curricular Guidelines for the undergraduate-level course in physical therapy, the curriculum must promote the training of a generalist, humanist, critical, and reflective professional to develop skills focused on decision-making, communication, leadership, etc. Several methodologies are used in the teaching-learning process; of these, active methodologies are often cited, wherein, contrary to the traditional model of teaching, the roles of the teacher and student are reversed. This study aimed to evaluate students' perception of learning in teams (Team-based learning) as a teaching-learning strategy in the physical therapy undergraduate program of the University of the State of Pará, using the Team-based Learning Student Assessment Instrument (TBL-SAI). A cross-sectional, descriptive study with 21 physical therapy undergraduate students of the UEPA Campus XII was conducted. The TBL-SAI was administered after they participated in an optional course of the respiratory system, wherein the TBL teaching was adopted. The 33 items of the TBL-SAI comprise responses ranging from 1 (I strongly disagree) to 5 (I strongly agree), divided into three subscales: perception of students' accountability, preference for traditional approach or TBL, and students' satisfaction. Average score on the subscales higher than the neutral scores indicated that the students perceived the TBL to be an effective learning tool. The participants reported an overall positive experience using TBL with respect to accountability toward their studies, preference for TBL, and their satisfaction with the method. Future studies should evaluate the impact of TBL on the academic performance and learning ability of undergraduate students of physical therapy.

This article presents the results of a qualitative study that explored how freedom in music can stimulate creative development in students. A series of musical and pedagogical activities, called Creative Freedom, which involved favourable conditions for autonomy and creative agency, was developed. This study was conducted between 2013 and 2018 in two different universities and involved a total of 72 musical volunteers. The data analysis methodology chosen for this study was grounded theory, with the aim of understanding the social and individual meanings present during the empirical research. The findings showed empirical evidence that freedom can enable creative development through the minimization of dysfunctional beliefs and the promotion of a more positive self-concept, allowing students to glimpse musical abilities that they had not previously noticed.

This work aimed to raise ocean awareness of 6th-grade students using marine invertebrates and integrating ludic activities within the curricula. Forty-two students from two public elementary schools from Northeast Brazil were selected. A pre-experimental design with pre-test/post-test was followed, using a questionnaire on ocean-environmental-related topics, and applying an inquiry-based learning approach. The ludic procedures were effective to improve the perception and learning of the students on the importance of oceans and the need for their preservation. We highlight the necessity for including more active methods to promote such awareness in schools.

Background: Social distancing used as a measure to contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2, led to a series of changes in eating behavior, including food craving. Purpose: We aimed to evaluate food craving and its associated factors among women and men during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: An online questionnaire was conducted, containing data about food craving and possible associated factors. Results 1363 individuals were included in the survey. Food craving was shown in 46.0% of the respondents. Among women, increased or reduced weight, working/studying during the pandemic without changes, increased snacking, worsened sleep quality, uncontrolled eating were some factors associated with food craving. For men, some factors associated were having a morning snack, living with parents, reduced sleep hours, and emotional eating. Discussion: Factors associated with food craving varied between men and women, being more present among women. These differences can be related to hormonal differences, way of working, daily tasks, and food preferences. Translation to Health Education Practice: Our findings may be used to develop guidelines for maintaining healthy eating habits in pandemic situations. In addition, the study showcases the need for health educators to consider the qualitative and quantitative aspects of nutrition, which can interfere with increased food cravings.

The learning of scientific concepts is one of the main research subjects in science education. Although little used, the theory of conceptual profiles allows the study of this knowledge, taking into account the presence of different ways of thinking about a certain concept in the same individual. This study aimed to build a conceptual profile for the concept of equilibrium and, based on this profile, relate it to the teaching and learning process of chemical equilibrium. Four zones were proposed to comprise the profile, called intuitive, static, kinetic and energetic. Subsequently, we analyzed the responses obtained in a questionnaire by students of Chemistry courses in order to group similar ways of speaking into categories related to the concept of equilibrium and the proposed zones for the conceptual profile. In the answers, we found some alternative conceptions already identified by the literature. Based on the results, the proposed zones for the conceptual profile of equilibrium indicate that establishing associations between the state of chemical equilibrium and the notion of equality can lead to conceptual errors and, therefore, it is suggested to give priority to the notion of stability. We also propose the use of studies on the History and Philosophy of Sciences applied to the teaching of chemical equilibrium to stimulate the emergence, dialogue and enrichment between the zones of conceptual profile in individuals.

The objective of this study was to identify and analyze the main factors that explain the resistance to distance education (DE) in corporate education (CE) in a military institution. The present study was structured with quantitative and explanatory approach, based on the theoretical framework of the READEC model, which was developed and validated by Albertin and Brauer (2012). From a technical point of view, a bibliographic survey and a field survey were carried out by means of an electronic questionnaire. Data collection was carried out with a sample of 345 Brazilian Army personnel who were part of the Training Course for Sergeants (TCS). The data of this research were treated with the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), technique based on Partial Least Squares (PLS). The results of the research showed that the self-efficacy and performance expectation dimensions directly and positively influence the resistance to the DE in the CE, and the effort expectation, facilitating conditions and interactivity dimensions are constructs antecedent to the performance expectation. Contrary to the previous theory, the results also indicated that the perception about the organizational infrastructure was not significant to explain the resistance to DE, which allows us to bring new insights about this phenomenon.
