Purpose: Previous literature has demonstrated the mediating role of adiposity in the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and cardiometabolic risk as well as the potential role of CRF in attenuating the adverse consequences associated with excess weight. This study aimed to evaluate the mediating role of CRF and adiposity in the possible association with cardiometabolic risk. Method: Observational 3-year longitudinal study that included 420 children and adolescents (10.50 [2.05] y of age at baseline; 56.2% girls). Body mass index (BMI) was calculated, and CRF was evaluated using field assessments. A clustered cardiometabolic risk score (cMetS) was calculated from glucose, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, and triglycerides z scores. Analyses evaluated the mediating role of BMI in the association between CRF and cMetS as well as whether CRF mediated the association between BMI and cMetS. Results: BMI at baseline was directly associated with the cMetS at follow-up (0.102; 95% confidence interval, 0.020 to 0.181), independently of CRF, whereas CRF was only indirectly associated with cMetS at follow-up through BMI (−0.036; 95% confidence interval, −0.070 to −0.009), meaning that the association between CRF and cMetS was explained via the mediation role of BMI. Knowledge of how the different types of sedentary behaviors (SB) are associated with functional limitations can guide professionals who work with older adults on better recommendations about the amount of daily time that should be encouraged in each type of SB. The objective was to estimate the associations between two SB typologies (SB television [TV] and SB computer/internet) and the presence of handgrip strength, lower limb strength, gait speed, and balance limitations in Brazilian community-dwelling older adults. This is a cross-sectional study with 1,298 community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years). SB was assessed by self-reporting daily time spent watching TV or using computer/internet (categorized into <2, 3–4, and ≥5 hr/day). Outcomes were handgrip strength, lower limb strength, gait speed, and balance limitations considering referenced cutoff points. Older adults in SB TV ≥5 hr/day had 1.75 (95% confidence interval [CI] [1.07, 2.86]) and 1.88 (95% CI [1.02, 3.46]) times more chances of handgrip strength and gait speed limitations, respectively. On the other hand, those who spent 3–4 and ≥5 hr/day in SB computer/internet had 0.45 (95% CI [0.20, 0.99]) and 0.37 (95% CI [0.15, 0.93]) had less chances of lower limb strength and balance limitations, respectively. This study aimed to examine the relationship between Walk Score index with walking to commuting, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and screen time in older adults. Georeferenced addresses were entered into the Walk Score platform. Walking to commute and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and categorized according to the World Health Organization recommendations. Screen time was analyzed through self-reported time watching television/being on the computer. We used binary logistic regression to estimate the association between variables. Older adults who lived in places with higher Walk Score had a higher prevalence of walking to commuting (odds ratio = 1.73; 95% confidence interval [1.18, 2.55]) and engaging in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (odds ratio = 1.76; 95% confidence interval [1.05, 2.98]). A relationship also was observed between higher Walk Score and more time in screen time (odds ratio = 1.67; 95% confidence interval [1.19, 2.34]). Introduction. Despite all the improvements in surgical and anesthetic techniques, this procedure is still associated with pulmonary and cardiovascular complications in the postoperative period, and early rehabilitation, done through the use of cycloergometer, can minimize such complications, besides reducing the length of hospital stay. Objective. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the impact of cardiovascular exercise on lung function, respiratory muscle strength, and functional capacity in elderly patients after heart bypass surgery. Methods. To this purpose, a randomized and controlled clinical trial was conducted. Research participants were randomized to the cycle ergometer group (CEG) or to the control group (CG). The CG was managed based on the institution's protocol. The CEG also carried out all the activities of the control group, but there was the inclusion of cycle ergometry through a device built by the researchers. Pulmonary function (vital capacity (VC) and peak expiratory flow (PEF)), ventilatory muscle strength (maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP)), and functional capacity (six‐minute walk test) were evaluated before surgery, at ICU, and hospital discharge. Results. During the research period, 122 patients were evaluated, 61 in each group. The MIP of the cycle ergometry group was higher at discharge from the ICU 95% CI 8 (5.46 to 10.54) and at hospital discharge 95% CI 14 (16.89 to 11.11). MEP was higher in the cycle ergometry group at discharge from the ICU with 95% CI 6 (8.18 to 3.82) and at hospital discharge with 95% CI 9 (11.69 a 6.31). Vital capacity at ICU discharge with 95% CI 6 (7.98 to 4.02) and at hospital discharge with 95% CI 7 (8.98 to 5.02), as well as peak flow at ICU discharge with 95% CI 43 (75.27 to 10.73), showed relevance, being higher in the group that used the cycle ergometer. The CEG showed improvement in functional capacity at the time of hospital discharge with a 95% CI 56 (30.37 to 81.63). Conclusion. We conclude that application of cycloergometry after CABG decreases the loss of pulmonary function, muscle strength, and functional capacity. This trial is registered with RBR-39yrht6. Background: Although menstruation is a monthly biological phenomenon, it is shrouded in stigma and shame which directly impacts health, education, gender equality, decent work, and economic growth. However, there is scarce evidence on how personal agency, an individual's ability to access resources, may act as a protective factor to adequate menstrual health and hygiene practices. Therefore, we assess the association between attitudes toward menstruation and personal agency among very young adolescent girls. Methods: We use cross-sectional data from the Global Early Adolescent Study in São Paulo, Brazil, among 10- to 14-year-old girls who have experienced menarche (n = 325) and completed a home-based self-administered questionnaire in 2021. "Attitudes toward menstruation" was created based on five indicators on a Likert scale, with a higher score indicating more positive attitudes. The main covariate was personal agency, comprised of three scales and modeled as three continuous variables: voice, decision-making power, and freedom of movement. Data were analyzed using multivariable linear regression. Results: Attitudes toward menstruation mean score was 12.5 (range 5–19). Older adolescents (12–14 years-old) had higher mean scores (more positive) than younger adolescents (10–11 years-old) on attitudes toward menstruation, whereas no other sociodemographic or menstrual health indicator (knowledge or access to products) were associated with attitudes toward menstruation. In the multiple regression model, older age and higher freedom of movement remained positively associated with attitudes toward menstruation (βadjust = 0.5; 95%CI 0.1 to 0.8). Conclusion: Positive attitudes toward menstruation are associated with higher freedom of movement among very young Brazilian adolescent girls. The promotion of personal agency should be recognized as key strategies to accelerate young girls' positive approaches to their own menstruation and, consequently, well-being. The aging population, often burdened with multimorbidity and polypharmacy complexities, requires comprehensive care during healthcare transitions. These transitions contribute to increased prescriptions, exacerbating polypharmacy and frailty in older individuals. Medication reconciliation, a preventive strategy, optimizes medication lists through systematic analysis, particularly benefiting older patients grappling with polypharmacy. This practice holds substantial potential in enhancing patient safety during care transitions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the discrepancies detected during the practice of medication reconciliation at the admission, discharge, or transfer of older individuals in a ward in Brazil. This is a single-cohort study of patients admitted to an older adult care ward in Brazil, monitored from September 2021 to April 2022. Older individuals hospitalized in the ward, exhibiting the characteristic clinical profile of multimorbidity and polypharmacy, were observed to identify discrepancies in the practice of medication reconciliation conducted as part of pharmaceutical care services. Medication reconciliation was carried out upon admission, discharge from the ward for older adult care, or transfer to other healthcare units. Sixty older individuals were monitored during the study period in the ward. The use of polypharmacy at home was evident in more than 70% of patients, and multimorbidity was present in over 90% of patients. On average, 8.6 discrepancies were identified per patient (± 4.7). Upon admission to the older adult care ward, 501 discrepancies were identified and assessed, decreasing to 200 at the time of hospital discharge or transfer to other units. In total, 48 medication errors were identified in the evaluated prescriptions and ongoing pharmacotherapy. The use of polypharmacy proved to be a contributing factor that increased the identification of discrepancies in medication reconciliation (p < 0.001). Analyzing medication reconciliation discrepancies uncovers intentional and unintentional aspects in prescriptions, with medication quantity, especially in polypharmacy, linked to potential harm. Early menarche has been associated with adverse health outcomes, such as depressive symptoms. Discovering effect modifiers across these conditions in the pediatric population is a constant challenge. We tested whether movement behaviours modified the effect of the association between early menarche and depression symptoms among adolescents. This cross-sectional study included 2031 females aged 15–19 years across all Brazilian geographic regions. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire; 30.5% (n = 620) reported having experienced menarche before age 12 years (i.e., early menarche). We used the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to evaluate depressive symptoms. Accruing any moderate–vigorous physical activity during leisure time, limited recreational screen time, and having good sleep quality were the exposures investigated. Adolescents who experienced early menarche and met one (B: –4.45, 95% CI: (–5.38, –3.51)), two (B: –6.07 (–7.02, –5.12)), or three (B: –6.49 (–7.76, –5.21)), and adolescents who experienced not early menarche and met one (B: –5.33 (–6.20; –4.46)), two (B: –6.12 (–6.99; –5.24)), or three (B: –6.27 (–7.30; –5.24)) of the movement behaviour targets had lower PHQ-9 scores for depression symptoms than adolescents who experienced early menarche and did not meet any of the movement behaviours. The disparities in depressive symptoms among the adolescents (early menarche vs. not early menarche) who adhered to all three target behaviours were not statistically significant (B: 0.41 (–0.19; 1.01)). Multiple exercises included in strength training involve greater activation of the quadriceps compared to hamstring muscles, which may lead to knee joint imbalances. The aim of this study was to examine the ratio of surface electromyography (sEMG) activity hamstring and quadriceps muscle groups (hamstring-to-quadriceps activation ratio; H:Q EMG), as well as lateral to medial hamstring activation ratio (LH:MH) in parallel squat, Romanian deadlift, hip thrust, lying leg curl and seated knee extension. The H:Q EMG was greater during lying leg curl compared to other exercises during both the concentric and eccentric phase, however the Romanian deadlift and hip thrust also resulted in relatively high H:Q EMG. Pairwise comparisons revealed that LH:MH was greater in the parallel squat compared to the Romanian deadlift and hip thrust in the concentric phase, and compared to the Romanian deadlift and hip thrust during the eccentric phase. Our data suggests that the lying leg curl promotes the greatest hamstring activation and H:Q EMG, amongst the exercises investigated, while also providing relatively homogenous LH:MH. The lying leg curl should be considered as a primary exercise in rehabilitation and training programmes, aiming to proportionally activate LH:MH and increase H:Q EMG, which may improve knee muscle balance. To evaluate the association of ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption with depression among Brazilian adults (≥18 years). Cross-sectional study. Data were obtained from a population-based survey conducted in 2023 (n = 21,690). UPF consumption was investigated using a questionnaire regarding the consumption on the previous day of 13 subgroups of UPF selected from those most consumed in Brazil according to a previous national survey (cutoff score ≥5 subgroups). The medical diagnosis of depression was self-reported. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the adjusted (by sex, age, education, presence of partner/spouse, and overweight) Odds Ratio (aOR) of UPF consumption according to the presence of depression. Analyses were conducted for the total population and stratified by sex. Medical diagnosis of depression was reported by 12.3%. The prevalence of high UPF consumption (≥5 subgroups) was 17.7%, being higher in men (22.0%) and those with depression (19.3%). Depression increased the chance of presenting a high UPF consumption among the total population (aOR 1.35; CI 95% 1.08–1.68) and women (aOR 1.35; CI 95% 1.03–1.77), with no association among men. The presence of depression was associated with greater consumption of UPF among Brazilian adults, especially among the female population. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors associated with diabetes mellitus (DM) among Brazilian adults. Cross-sectional study. Data of 75,860 Brazilian adults (≥18 years) were collected using the Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey (Vigitel) (2020–2023). Variables assessed included self-reported medical diagnosis of DM, sociodemographic factors (sex, age, schooling, marital status) and DM risk factors (regular consumption of sweetened beverages (≥5 times/week), infrequent consumption of fruits and vegetables, and beans (<5 times/week), insufficient physical activity, prolonged screen time on cell phones, computers, tablets (CCT), and television (TV), smoking, heavy episodic drinking, excess weight, and obesity). Logistic regression models estimated crude and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) (adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics) for the association between the risk factors and the presence of DM. The overall prevalence of self-reported DM in the population was 9.2%. There was a lower chance of regular consumption of sweetened beverages (aOR 0.79; 95% CI: 0.65–0.97) and heavy episodic drinking (aOR 0.77; 95% CI: 0.65–0.93) and a greater chance of insufficient physical activity (aOR 1.40; 95% CI: 1.25–1.55), prolonged TV screen time (aOR 1.22; 95% CI: 1.09–1.36), excess weight (aOR 1.62; 95% CI: 1.44–1.82) and obesity (aOR 1.87; 95% CI: 1.67–2.10) among individuals with DM. Interprofessional collaboration leads to better health outcomes. Measuring attitudes related to interprofessional collaboration is not a simple task, and in Brazil, there are few instruments for this evaluation. This study aimed to evaluate the evidence of validity and reliability of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes Toward Interprofessional Collaboration in a population of undergraduate healthcare students. It included 108 undergraduates from medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, dentistry, pharmacy, psychology, and physical education academic programmes. The median age was 22 (18 and 58) and 75% were females. The scale comprises 20 items divided into two domains: working relationships, consisting of 12 items, and accountability, consisting of 8 items. The instrument showed good reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.77, 95% CI 0.71–0.83) and no item was considered inconsistent in improving the scale significantly. Background: Studies investigating the quality of the diet and dietary intake of children with Down syndrome (DS) are required because the features attributed to the syndrome can affect growth, development and quality of life. Methods: This cross‐sectional study was conducted with 77 Brazilian children with DS between 5 and 36 months of age receiving care at the multidisciplinary outpatient clinic of the University Hospital. Participants' sociodemographic, dietary and anthropometric data were collected from the care protocols. Dietary data were collected from 24‐h recalls and dietary practices were assessed according to the WHO dietary guidelines. Associations between inadequate feeding practices and demographic variables were assessed using logistic regression models. Results: Fruits, milk or infant formula, vegetables, beans and meat were among the five most consumed foods by the children investigated. Overall, we observed a high number of cases of early weaning (50.6%), low minimum dietary diversity (MDD; 40.3%), inadequate consistency for age (64.9%), early presence of ultra‐processed foods (76.6%), sugars and sweets (33.8%) in the diet of the children with DS. In the associations of inadequate feeding practices by age group, low MDD [odds ratio (OR): 18.6; 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.4; 57.1] and inadequate consistency (OR: 6.65; 95% CI: 1.8; 24.7) were more frequent among children aged below 12 months while this relationship was inverse for early introduction of sugar and sweets (OR: 0.04; 95% CI: 0.01; 0.29). Conclusion: Our findings showed a high number of cases of inadequate dietary practices in children with DS investigated, which could adversely affect the long‐term health of this population. Conditions such as violence, drug abuse, sexual satisfaction, anxiety, depression, and disability interfere with a healthy pregnancy and can also account for maternal morbidity. The instrument WOICE was built by WHO to measure it. We applied WOICE in a prospective cohort of 125 pregnant women, using a before-after approach, during the third trimester of pregnancy, and after 42 until 90 days of childbirth. 60% had anxiety during pregnancy, decreasing to 48.8% after delivery (p = 0.07), and depression scores decreased from 7.56 to 5.80 (p = 0.014). This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological aspects of PrEP use and barriers to accessing this prophylaxis. This cross-sectional study was conducted between January 2021 and April 2022, encompassing 140 PrEP users treated at the Testing and Counseling Center (CTA) in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and factors associated with PrEP discontinuation were obtained using a standardized questionnaire. Most PrEP users were cisgender men (92.00%), predominantly white (51.00%), over 30 years of age (56.50%), homosexual-oriented (76.50%), and had a minimum of 12 years of education (77.50%). Approximately 60.00% admitted to inconsistent condom use in recent sexual encounters, primarily involving anal intercourse. Approximately 88.00% perceived themselves as at risk of contracting STIs in the upcoming year. Regarding new presentation forms, 54.00% indicated a willingness to use "on-demand PrEP," and 92.00% expressed interest in using "injectable PrEP." After 6 months of follow-up, 43.60% (95.00% CI: 35.50–52.00) discontinued PrEP use, primarily due to changes in sexual behavior (38.30%) and difficulties accessing healthcare services (21.28%). This study underscores the need to involve diverse key populations and highlights the significance of PrEP as an ongoing monitoring strategy for HIV/STI prevention in addition to the importance of incorporating new formulations such as daily oral PrEP into the Brazilian National Health System (SUS). Background: Physical activity (PA) has been associated with decreased symptoms of depression and anxiety in the general population, but more consistent evidence is needed in the university population. Purpose: Investigate the association between physical activity and depressive and anxiety symptoms in undergraduates. Methods: 100 university students (23 ± 4 years, 47% female) were included in this cross-sectional study. We performed multiple linear regression analyses to investigate the association between the main variables. Results: The physical activity (MET/min/week) had a significant association with depressive (F(2, 97) = 15.104, p <.001; adjusted R2 =.222) and anxiety symptoms (F(2, 97) = 11.853 p <.001; adjusted R2 =.180), explaining these outcomes in approximately 22% and 18%, respectively. Moderate or vigorous physical activity did not have an association with depressive (B = −0.10, t = −0.700, p =.486) or anxiety symptoms (B = −0.11, t = 0.725, p =.470). Discussion: Individuals with high levels of physical activity have lower depressive and anxiety symptoms than individuals with lower levels of PA. Translation to Health Education Practice: Increasing the level of physical activity may be a viable strategy to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in university students. Introduction: Biological monoclonal antibodies play a pivotal role in cancer treatment, with biosimilars significantly enhancing their accessibility. In Brazil's ethnically diverse setting, real-world evidence is crucial for assessing the effectiveness and applicability of these therapies in routine clinical practice. Methods: We performed a multicentric, observational, prospective real-world study on biosimilar trastuzumab-dkst for adjuvant treatment of early HER2-positive breast cancer in Brazilian patients. Data were collected using a case-report form. Results: Of the 176 recruited, we present data from the first 59 patients (mean age 51.7 ± 12.9 years) who had completed treatment with trastuzumab-dkst. The mean time from diagnosis to the first adjuvant treatment with trastuzumab-dkst was 5.5 ± 2.7 months. Of the patients, 59% of patients achieved at least a 30-month follow-up. The 31.7-month invasive disease-free survival rate (IDFS) was 94.5% (95% CI 83.9–98.2%) and median IDFS was not achieved, since only three patients had invasive disease recurrence. The overall survival rate was 100% until the last assessment. The observed adverse events were similar to those presented by other studies using biosimilar or reference trastuzumab. Four serious adverse events (8.5%) were observed. A reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction of at least 10% was observed in 16.9% of participants. There was no treatment interruption, and three participants (5.1%) had their trastuzumab-dkst dose reduced. Conclusion: Our study reinforces the existing pivotal data, underscoring the real-world efficacy and safety of biosimilar trastuzumab-dkst in the adjuvant treatment for early HER2-positive breast cancer. The preliminary long-term effectiveness and safety data we present further validate trastuzumab-dkst's role as a cost-saving alternative in oncological care. Introduction: RTXM83, a biosimilar of rituximab, was approved after physicochemical, functional, non-clinical, and clinical studies demonstrated their similarity; these studies included RTXM83-AC-01-11, a multicentric double-blind international prospective pivotal study. Long-term data on biosimilars can potentially elucidate their clinical robustness and facilitate their broader adoption. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed a dataset from a Brazilian cohort previously randomized in the RTXM83-AC-01-11 study followed by the assessment of long-term outcomes in an observational extension phase from randomization in the RTXM83-AC-01–11 study to the last recorded evaluation. Patients with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) received either reference rituximab (R) or RTXM83 plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP) as adjuvant treatment. Results: The median follow-up period was 77.0 months. Patients with initial DLBCL stages III and IV comprised 50% of the R-CHOP group and 40% of the biosimilar group. Five (18.5%) patients, including two RTXM83-CHOP-treated and three R-CHOP-treated individuals, experienced late adverse events (AEs) of interest. No new safety signs were established. At the final assessment, the progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 93.3% and 50.0% in the RTXM83-CHOP and R-CHOP groups, respectively. Median PFS was not achieved in the RTXM83-CHOP group, which was 40.5 months in the R-CHOP group. The overall survival (OS) rates were 100% and 66.7% in the RTXM83-CHOP and R-CHOP groups, respectively. The median OS was not reached in any group. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the long-term safety and effectiveness of RTXM83 in treating DLBCL; outcomes comparable to those of the reference product and potentially improved access to treatment have been indicated. However, further research with more diverse patient groups can validate these findings and advocate the broader adoption of biosimilars in cancer care. Background: This study aimed to develop prognostic models for predicting the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with COVID-19 and compare their performance with the Respiratory rate-OXygenation (ROX) index. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data collected between March 2020 and August 2021 at three hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ICU patients aged 18 years and older with a diagnosis of COVID-19 were screened. The exclusion criteria were patients who received IMV within the first 24 h of ICU admission, pregnancy, clinical decision for minimal end-of-life care and missing primary outcome data. Clinical and laboratory variables were collected. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to select predictor variables. Models were based on the lowest Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) and lowest AIC with significant p values. Assessment of predictive performance was done for discrimination and calibration. Areas under the curves (AUC)s were compared using DeLong's algorithm. Models were validated externally using an international database. Results: Of 656 patients screened, 346 patients were included; 155 required IMV (44.8%), 191 did not (55.2%), and 207 patients were male (59.8%). According to the lowest AIC, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, heart rate, respiratory rate, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), temperature, respiratory effort signals, and leukocytes were identified as predictors of IMV at hospital admission. According to AIC with significant p values, SOFA score, SpO2, and respiratory effort signals were the best predictors of IMV; odds ratios (95% confidence interval): 1.46 (1.07–2.05), 0.81 (0.72–0.90), 9.13 (3.29–28.67), respectively. The ROX index at admission was lower in the IMV group than in the non-IMV group (7.3 [5.2–9.8] versus 9.6 [6.8–12.9], p < 0.001, respectively). In the external validation population, the area under the curve (AUC) of the ROX index was 0.683 (accuracy 63%), the AIC model showed an AUC of 0.703 (accuracy 69%), and the lowest AIC model with significant p values had an AUC of 0.725 (accuracy 79%). Conclusions: In the development population of ICU patients with COVID-19, SOFA score, SpO2, and respiratory effort signals predicted the need for IMV better than the ROX index. In the external validation population, although the AUCs did not differ significantly, the accuracy was higher when using SOFA score, SpO2, and respiratory effort signals compared to the ROX index. Research suggests that sedentary behavior (SB) and obesity are associated with disabilities in basic activities (BADL) and instrumental (IADL) activities of daily living. However, there is a lack of studies investigating this association in community-dwelling older adults. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between different SB typologies, isolated and in conjunction with obesity, and their associations with BADL and IADL disabilities in community-dwelling Brazilian older adults. This was a cross-sectional study using data from older adults (≥60 years) who participated in the Brazilian National Health Survey (2019). The exposures were obesity (BMI > 27 kg/m2) and the amount of time spent daily on SB watching television (SB TV < 3 and ≥3 h/day) and engaging in leisure activities (SB leisure < 3 and ≥3 h/day), analyzed both separately and jointly. The outcomes were BADL and IADL disabilities. The main results showed that isolated SB TV ≥ 3 h/day (OR: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.14; 1.39) and SB TV ≥ 3 h/day combined with obesity (OR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.37; 1.75) increased the odds of BADL and IADL disabilities. Obesity alone (OR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.07; 1.36) increased only the odds of BADL disabilities. Moreover, SB leisure ≥ 3 h/day without obesity reduced the odds of IADL disabilities (OR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.41; 0.76). Ideally, older adults should be encouraged to prevent obesity, reduce excessive periods spent in SB watching TV, and increase the daily periods spent in leisure activities, thus minimizing the likelihood of disabilities in functional activities. Background: Longevity increases pose public health challenges, especially in managing falls and their psychological impacts on older adults. Limited evidence exists on the relationship between a fear of falling (FOF), previous falls, and depressive symptoms among community-dwelling older adults. Objective: To evaluate the association between falls, FOF, and depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in 2018, included 400 older adults from a Basic Health Unit in São Paulo, Brazil. The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) and the International Falls Efficacy Scale (FES-I) were used, along with self-report questionnaires on fall history. Linear and logistic regression were used to analyze the relationships between variables. Results: The mean age was 75.2 (SD = 8.53) years, with 63.2% being female. Depressive symptoms were observed in 18.3% of the participants, while 90.5% reported a fear of falling (FOF). More than half (63.0%) experienced falls, with 49.5% occurring in the last year. Factors such as the female gender, negative health perceptions, and functional dependence were associated with depressive symptoms. Adjusted analyses indicated that both a fear of falling (FOF) (B = 0.043; p = 0.012) and a history of falls (B = 0.725; p = 0.015) were associated with depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Falls, FOF, and depressive symptoms are interlinked among older adults, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to improve their mental and physical health. Racial disparity in physical activity in people with diabetes in Brazil remains scarcely investigated. We examined the association between physical activity and diabetes-related complications according to race in the Brazilian population. Cross-sectional. We analyzed data from the 2019 National Health Survey, a population-based survey of Brazilian adults. We used a self-reported questionnaire to assess physical activity during commuting, leisure-time, domestic, and occupational activities. Diabetes-related complications included vision, kidney, and circulatory impairment, foot ulcers, diabetic coma, and all-cause complications. We used robust Poisson regression models with restricted cubic splines to examine the association between physical activity and diabetes-related complications. We included 2529 adults with diabetes (48.9% women; mean age: 53.5 ± 11.9 years). One-third experienced diabetes-related complications. Black adults performed less leisure-time and more occupational and commuting physical activity than White participants. Black participants showed a higher probability of all-cause (1.61; 95%CI: 1.29, 2.02) and vision complications (1.58; 95%CI: 1.23, 2.04) compared to White participants independent of physical activity status. Only leisure-time physical activity was associated with a reduced probability of all-cause complications (PR: 0.78; 0.71, 0.86) whereas commuting and occupational physical activity were not associated with any diabetes-related complications. Physically inactive, Brown adults showed a higher probability of kidney, circulatory, vision, and all-cause complications than active, White adults. However, physical activity attenuated the probability of these complications in Brown participants. The association between physical activity and diabetes-related complications is domain-specific. Objective: To compare the immediate effects of shockwave therapy using two different tips in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain. Design: Randomised placebo-controlled study with three intervention groups. Setting: The patients recruited for this study were sent for physiotherapy treatment at primary care between May and July 2022. Participants: Eighty-one patients with chronic non-specific low back pain aged 18–80 years with pain for ≥3 months and pain intensity ≥3 were randomly recruited for the study. Intervention: The patients received a single intervention of radial shockwave therapy with 2000 discharges at 100 mJ energy and 5 Hz frequency using concave or convex tips or placebo treatment. Main measures: The primary outcome was pain intensity immediately post-intervention. The secondary outcomes were pressure pain threshold, temporal summation of pain, and functional performance. Data were collected at baseline and post-intervention. Results: The post-intervention pain intensity in the concave tip group is an average of two points lower (95% CI = −3.6, −0.4; p < 0.01) than that in the placebo group. The post-intervention pressure pain threshold for the concave tip group was an average of 62.8 kPa higher (95% CI = 0.4, 125.1; p < 0.05) than for the convex tip group and 76.4 kPa higher (95% CI = 14, 138.7; p < 0.01) than in the placebo group. Purpose: Leishmaniasis, caused by the parasite of the genus Leishmania, is a neglected tropical disease which is endemic in more than 60 countries. In South-East Asia, Brazil, and East Africa, it mainly occurs as kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis, VL), and subsequently as post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) in a smaller portion of cases. As stated per WHO roadmap, accessibility to accurate diagnostic methods is an essential step to achieve elimination. This study aimed to test the accuracy of a portable minoo device, a small battery-driven, multi-use fluorimeter operating with isothermal technology for molecular diagnosis of VL and PKDL. Methods: Fluorescence data measured by the device within 20 min are reported back to the mobile application (or app) via Bluetooth and onward via the internet to a backend. This allows anonymous analysis and storage of the test data. The test result is immediately returned to the app displaying it to the user. Results: The limit of detection was 11.2 genome copies (95% CI) as determined by screening a tenfold dilution range of whole Leishmania donovani genomes using isothermal recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA). Pathogens considered for differential diagnosis were tested and no cross-reactivity was observed. For its diagnostic performance, DNA extracted from 170 VL and PKDL cases, comprising peripheral blood samples (VL, n = 96) and skin biopsies (PKDL, n = 74) from India (n = 108) and Bangladesh (n = 62), was screened. Clinical sensitivity and specificity were 88% and 91%, respectively. Conclusion: Minoo devices can offer a convenient, cheaper alternative to other molecular diagnostics. Objective: This case–control study evaluated the association of sociodemographic profile, mental health disorders and oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) with periodontitis. Methods: Patients with periodontitis (PP, n = 50) and control patients (CP, n = 50) were allocated into 2 groups after a complete periodontal examination. Data collection included age, sex, marital status, education and application of 2 questionnaires: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for the diagnosis of anxiety/depression and Impact Profile on Oral Health (OHIP‐14) for classification of well‐being. An adjusted multiple binary logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the effect of all studied covariates on periodontitis. Results: The results show that mean clinical attachment loss and periodontal probing depth were 5.92 (SD = 0.42) and 5.46 (SD = 0.78) in PP and 0.00 (SD = 0.00) and 2.85 (SD = 0.23) in CP, respectively (p < 0.001). The regression analysis demonstrated a significant effect on periodontitis for age (OR = 1.13; p < 0.0001; 95% CI: 1.07–1.20), with the PP having more people aged 50 years or older than CP, anxiety (OR = 1.25; p = 0.020; 95% CI: 1.04–1.50) and OHIP‐14 (OR = 1.17; p < 0.0001; 95% CI: 1.08–1.226). Objective: To validate the level of agreement between self‐report and clinical examination for oral conditions and evaluate the effect of sociodemographic conditions on the validity of self‐report among women aged 60 and older. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted in a social community center for seniors in Southern Brazil. Sociodemographic data (age, level of education, and income) were measured. Participants were interviewed and clinically examined for the number of teeth (DMF‐T index) and the use of dental prostheses. The self‐reported number of teeth in each arch and the use of dental prostheses were gathered through interviews. The level of agreement was estimated using the observed agreement, Kappa statistics, sensitivity/specificity (edentulism/prostheses) and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient, and related tests (number of teeth). The validity of the oral conditions was estimated according to sociodemographic information. Results: Ninety‐nine women participated in the study. High levels of agreement were observed for edentulism (97.8%; 95%CI 92.8;99.7; Kappa 0.947) and the use of dental prostheses (97.0%; 95%CI 91.3;99.4; Kappa 0.922). In both conditions, despite achieving similar concordance correlation coefficients (ranging from weak to moderate), the mean number of upper teeth was lower in clinical examination (7.1 ± 5.2) compared with self‐reported (8.6 ± 3.6), while the opposite was observed for lower teeth (clinical examination: 9.1 ± 3.4; self‐reported: 6.6 ± 5.3). Larger differences were found among women of low income and educational levels. Objectives: To identify the prevalence and associated factors of cognitive dysfunction, 1 year after ICU discharge, among adult patients, and it´s relation with quality of life. Methods: Multicenter, prospective cohort study including ICUs of 10 tertiary hospitals in Brazil, between May 2014 and December 2018. The patients included were 452 adult ICU survivors (median age 60; 47.6% women) with an ICU stay greater than 72 h. Results: At 12 months after ICU discharge, a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (tMOCA) telephone score of less than 12 was defined as cognitive dysfunction. At 12 months, of the 452 ICU survivors who completed the cognitive evaluation 216 (47.8%) had cognitive dysfunction. In multivariable analyses, the factors associated with long-term (1-year) cognitive dysfunction were older age (Prevalence Ratio–PR = 1.44, P < 0.001), absence of higher education (PR = 2.81, P = 0.005), higher comorbidities on admission (PR = 1.089; P = 0.004) and delirium (PR = 1.13, P < 0.001). Health-related Quality of life (HRQoL), assessed by the mental and physical dimensions of the SF-12v2, was significantly better in patients without cognitive dysfunction (Mental SF-12v2 Mean difference = 2.54; CI 95%, − 4.80/− 0.28; p = 0.028 and Physical SF-12v2 Mean difference = − 2.85; CI 95%, − 5.20/− 0.50; P = 0.018). Conclusions: Delirium was found to be the main modifiable predictor of long-term cognitive dysfunction in ICU survivors. Higher education consistently reduced the probability of having long-term cognitive dysfunction. Cognitive dysfunction significantly influenced patients' quality of life, leading us to emphasize the importance of cognitive reserve for long-term prognosis after ICU discharge. To investigate the validity of six age-predicted maximum heart rate (HRmax) equations after stroke. Sixty individuals (54 (12) years; 64 (69) months after stroke) were included. A Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) performed on a treadmill obtained the HRmax. The most used age-predicted equations were investigated: (1) 220-age, proposed by Fox; (2) 206.9– (0.67 × age), proposed by Gellish; (3) 208– (0.7 × age), proposed by Tanaka; (4) 216.6– (0.84 × age), proposed by Astrand; (5) 164– (0.72 × age) and (6) 200– (0.92 × age) proposed by Brawner. No statistically significant agreement was found between the HRmax obtained by the CPET and the one predicted by the equations 1–5 (–0.18 ≤ 95% confidence interval ≤0.79). A significant and moderate agreement was found between the HRmax obtained by the CPET and the one predicted by equation (6) (95% CI= 0.05–0.75; Intraclass Correlation Coefficient= 0.51). Bland-Altman plots showed that equations (1–4) and (6) overestimated the HRmax. Equation (6) presented the lower mean difference. The equations developed for non-disabled individuals (1–4) are not adequate to be used in individuals after a stroke. Equation (6) (Brawner) showed the best results to be used in individuals after stroke; however, it should be used cautiously. Prediction equations for maximum heart rate (HRmax) are commonly used to prescribe aerobic exercise for individuals following a stroke. The equations developed for non-disabled individuals are not valid for use with individuals after stroke, leading to an overestimation of the HRmax. An age-predicted HRmax equation developed for individuals with coronary heart disease may provide outcomes that are more accurate for stroke survivors, but care should still be taken when using it. The persistence of symptoms for more than three months following infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is referred to as "Long COVID". To gain a deeper understanding of the etiology and long-term progression of symptoms, this study aims to analyze the prevalence of Long COVID and its associated factors in a cohort of Brazilian adults and elders, twelve months after hospital discharge. An observational, prospective, and follow-up study was performed with a cohort of adults and older adults diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2020 in the State of Paraná, Brazil. Twelve months after hospital discharge, patients answered a phone questionnaire about the persistence of symptoms after three levels of exposure to COVID-19's acute phase (ambulatory, medical ward, and intensive care unit). According to the characteristics of participants, the prevalence of Long COVID-19 was calculated, and logistic regression analyses were conducted. We analyzed data from 1822 participants (980 adults [≥18–<60 years] and 842 older people [≥60 years]) across three exposure levels. The overall Long COVID prevalence was 64.2%. Long COVID was observed in 646 adults (55%; of which 326 were women) and 523 older people (45%; of which 284 were women). Females had a higher prevalence of long-term symptoms (52%) compared with men. The most common post-COVID-19 conditions in the 12-month follow-up were neurological (49.8%), followed by musculoskeletal (35.1%) and persistent respiratory symptoms (26.5%). Male individuals were less likely to develop Long COVID (aOR = 0.50). Other determinants were also considered risky, such as the presence of comorbidities (aOR = 1.41). Being an adult and having been hospitalized was associated with the development of Long COVID. The risk of developing Long COVID was twice as high for ward patients (aOR = 2.53) and three times as high for ICU patients (aOR = 3.56) when compared to non-hospitalized patients. Presenting clinical manifestations of digestive (aOR = 1.56), endocrine (aOR = 2.14), cutaneous (aOR = 2.51), musculoskeletal (aOR = 2.76) and psychological systems (aOR = 1.66) made adults more likely to develop Long COVID. Long COVID was present in a large proportion of people affected by the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Presence of Long COVID symptoms displayed a dose–response relationship with the level of disease exposure, with a greater prevalence of symptoms associated with the severe form in the acute period. Background: During COVID-19, the number of people experiencing homelessness increased, further exacerbating the violation of basic rights necessary for human survival. Thus, the study aimed to investigate the inequalities associated with income loss and food insecurity among people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 24 Brazilian state capitals and the Federal District among the homeless population using a validated instrument. Descriptive analyses and binary logistic regressions were performed. Results: Among 1512 homeless participants (median age:37, range:18–89), 39.4% had incomplete primary education, 83.7% earned below minimum wage or had no income, 56.5% received government aid, and 87.1% used the Sistema Único de Saúde (Brazilian Public Health System-SUS). During the pandemic, 42.0% faced food difficulties, and 26.3% experienced income loss. Across Brazilian macroregions, lack of employment affected four regions, with high SUS dependency and food scarcity. In the North (72.7%) and Northeast (51.9%), most lacked government aid, while in the Midwest (51.6%), temporary income loss prevailed. In regression analyses, men, black/mixed race, those married or in a stable union, government aid recipients, and SUS users had greater difficulty acquiring food during COVID-19. Men with incomplete high school or higher education and income above minimum wage were less likely to suffer temporary income loss, and black/mixed race individuals and those living on the streets were more likely. Conclusions: The study showed how socioeconomic factors increased income loss and food acquisition difficulties during COVID-19, exacerbating vulnerability and social inequities for the people experiencing homelessness. Evidence has suggested that a history of falls and fear of falling (FOF) are associated with reduced mobility among older adults. Although many studies have explored the association between the history of falls and FOF in the context of decreased mobility, most have had small sample sizes, limiting the generalizability of the results. Therefore, this study sought to contribute to the body of knowledge around these constructs to further support the previous findings. To investigate the association between a history of falls and FOF with low mobility in community-dwelling older adults. This cross-sectional study included 308 older adults (69.9 ± 7.1 years, 57.8% female). The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test was used to classify mobility limitations in participants and the Falls Efficacy Scale–International - Brazil was used to quantify FOF. Participants were also asked if they had fallen in the previous 12 months. Multivariable logistic regression was used. The prevalence rates of a history of falls and FOF were 32.7 and 48.4%, respectively. Older adults with a history of falls and FOF had 2.20 (95%CI: 1.20; 4.02) and 3.80 (95%CI: 1.90; 7.58) greater odds of presenting low mobility than older adults without these health problems, respectively. History of falls and FOF are associated with higher odds of low mobility in community-dwelling older adults. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to introduce public health programs aimed at preventing falls in older adults to reduce possible adverse health outcomes, including low mobility. This study investigated the associations of occupational physical activity and active transport with depressive symptoms, stratified by income range, among Brazilian working adults. This cross-sectional study drew on data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. We used the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to assess depressive symptoms in working adults aged 18–65 years, with physical activities (occupational physical activity and active transport) self-reported through a specially developed questionnaire. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were fitted. Individuals at the highest level of occupational physical activity (odds ratio [OR] 1.35; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.19–1.53) and at the moderate level of active transport to work (OR 1.66; 95% CI 1.24–2.22) returned increased odds of depressive symptoms as compared with those who were inactive in these domains. Stratified by income group, light active transport to work (OR 0.57; 95% CI 0.34–0.95) in the lower income group (Range 1) was associated with lower odds of depressive symptoms. On the other hand, individuals at the highest level of active transport to work returned higher odds of depressive symptoms in the low- and intermediate-income groups, Ranges 3 and 4 (OR 1.92; 95% CI 1.22–3.00 and OR 2.91; 95% CI 1.71–4.95, respectively). Our results suggest that occupational physical activity and active transport may be a risk factor for depressive symptoms. They also point to differences in this relationship by income range. Our goal was to explore self‐care practices among men who have sex with men in the context of Mpox in Brazil. This study used qualitative research methods, including interviews and thematic analysis, to collect and analyze data from male participants across the Brazilian territory. The narratives unveil men's perspectives on self‐care, risk reduction, and health beliefs during the Mpox pandemic. Our findings highlight a multifaceted approach to self‐care among men, encompassing hygiene, physical contact management, mask usage, skin lesion vigilance, and adherence to official guidelines. Men's attitudes toward sexual behaviors emphasize the importance of reducing sexual partners, practicing safe sex, and combating misinformation through accurate information dissemination. The development of these behaviors and self‐care practices can be facilitated by nurses guided by Dorothea Orem's Self‐Care Theory, supported by patient‐centered care, with strategies to address and confront the stigma associated with the disease and provide emotional support. Thus, the study underscores the pivotal role of self‐care in mitigating infection risks, especially in the context of emerging infectious diseases. It acknowledges the impact of socio‐cultural factors and healthcare policies on men's preventive measures. However, it also recognizes limitations, such as potential bias due to stigma concerns and a nonrepresentative sample. Introduction: New therapies for resistant hypertension (RH), including renal denervation (RDN), have been studied. Aim: Access the safety and effectiveness of radiofrequency-based RDN vs pharmacological treatment for RH. Methods: A thorough literature search was conducted across PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane databases, focusing on studies that compared the effects of radiofrequency-based RDN versus pharmacological treatment for RH. Treatment effects for binary and continuous endpoints were pooled and used, respectively, odds-ratio (OR) and mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to analyze continuous outcomes. Results: In the 10 included studies, involving 1.182 patients, 682 received radiofrequency-based RDN. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 84 months. Analysis revealed that the RDN group had a significant reduction in office systolic blood pressure (BP) (MD − 9.5 mmHg; 95% CI − 16.81 to − 2.29; P = 0.01), office diastolic BP (MD − 5.1 mmHg; 95% CI − 8.42 to − 2.80; P < 0.001), 24 h systolic BP (MD − 4.8 mmHg; 95% CI − 7.26 to − 2.42; P < 0.001). For 24 h diastolic BP RDN did not have a significant reduction (MD − 2.3 mmHg; 95% CI − 4.19 to − 0.52; P = 0.012). The heterogeneity between the studies was high, visible in the funnel and Baujat plots. The OR was non-significant for non-serious adverse events, but also clinically significant for hypertensive crises and strokes for the RDN group. Conclusions: While the pharmacological regimen of 3 or more anti-hypertensive, including a diuretic, still be the first-line option for RH treatment, our results support that radiofrequency-based RDN is superior in reducing global BP and is safe. Purpose: To obtain evidence of the clinical validity of the nursing diagnosis (ND) risk for disturbed maternal–fetal dyad in high‐risk pregnancy. Method: Causal validation of the ND through a case–control study performed in a university hospital with 155 high‐risk pregnant women: 31 cases and 124 controls. A causal association was found between the ND etiological factors and the occurrence of disruption of the symbiotic maternal–fetal dyad; an association was verified when the etiological factor presented a p‐value <0.05 and odds ratio >1. Findings: The risk factor absent–inadequate prenatal care; populations at risk, such as young‐advanced maternal age and economically disadvantaged pregnant women; and association conditions, such as maternal conditions and compromised fetal oxygen transport, increased the outcome likelihood. The associated condition maternal illnesses appeared as a protective factor. Conclusions: Evidence of clinical validity of the ND risk for disturbed maternal–fetal dyad was obtained, and an association between etiological factors and disruption of the symbiotic maternal–fetal dyad was found. Objective: To investigate the effect of diadynamic currents administered prior to exercises on pain and disability in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Design: A randomized-controlled trial. Setting: Special Rehabilitation Services in Taboão da Serra. Participants: Patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis. Intervention: Participants were randomly allocated to Group I (diadynamic currents and exercises; n = 30, 60 knees) or Group II (exercises alone; n = 30, 60 knees) and were treated three times a week for 8 weeks. Main outcome measures: The primary outcome measures were change in knee pain evaluated by visual analog scale and disability Index Score (Lequesne). Secondary outcomes included change in mobility (Timed Up and Go test), range of motion (goniometer), muscle strength (dynamometer), a composite score for pain and disability (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis questionnaire), and a drug diary to measure consumption of rescue pain medication (paracetamol). All measurements were collected at baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months from baseline (follow-up). Results: There were 60 participants with a mean (SD) age of 63.40 (8.20) years. Between-group differences in the follow-up (8 weeks and 6 months) were observed for pain at rest, pain during activities of daily living and disability. There was improvement in Group I that was maintained for the three variables 6 months after treatment. Mean difference for pain at rest was −3.08 points (95% confidence interval −4.13; −2.02), p < 0.01 with an effect size of 1.4; mean difference for pain during activities of daily living was −2.40 points (95% confidence interval −3.34; −1.45), p < 0.01 with an effect size of 1.24; and mean difference for disability was −4.08 points (95% confidence interval −5.89; −2.26), p < 0.01 with an effect size of 1.04. Conclusion: Patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis receiving 8 weeks of treatment with diadynamic currents as an adjunct to a program of exercises had significantly greater improvements in pain and disability than those receiving exercises alone. Objective Physical activity is recommended for recipients of a kidney transplant. However, ADHERE BRAZIL study found a high prevalence (69%) of physical inactivity in Brazilian recipients of a kidney transplant. To tackle this behavior, a broad analysis of barriers is needed. This study aimed to identify factors (patient and transplant center levels) associated with physical inactivity among recipients of a kidney transplant. Methods This was a subproject of the ADHERE BRAZIL study, a cross-sectional, multicenter study of 1105 recipients of a kidney transplant from 20 kidney transplant centers. Using a multistage sampling method, patients were proportionally and randomly selected. Applying the Brief Physical Activity Assessment questionnaire, patients were classified as physically active (≥150 min/wk) or physically inactive (<150 min/wk). On the basis of an ecological model, 34 factors associated with physical inactivity were analyzed by sequential logistic regression. Results At the patient level, physical inactivity was associated with smoking (odds ratio = 2.43; 95% CI = 0.97–6.06), obesity (odds ratio = 1.79; 95% CI = 1.26–2.55), peripheral vascular disease (odds ratio = 3.18; 95% CI = 1.20–8.42), >3 posttransplant hospitalizations (odds ratio = 1.58; 95% CI = 1.17–2.13), family income of >1 reference salary ($248.28 per month; odds ratio = 0.66; 95% CI = 0.48–0.90), and student status (odds ratio = 0.58; 95% CI = 0.37–0.92). At the center level, the correlates were having exercise physiologists in the clinical team (odds ratio = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.46–0.64) and being monitored in a teaching hospital (undergraduate students) (odds ratio = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.01–2.13). Conclusions This study identified factors associated with physical inactivity after kidney transplantation that may guide future multilevel behavioral change interventions for physical activity. Impact In a multicenter sample of recipients of a kidney transplant with a prevalence of physical inactivity of 69%, we found associations between this behavior and patient- and center-level factors. At the patient level, the chance of physical inactivity was positively associated with smoking, obesity, and patient morbidity (peripheral vascular disease and hospitalization events after kidney transplantation). Conversely, a high family income and a student status negatively correlated with physical inactivity. At the center level, the presence of a dedicated professional to motivate physical activity resulted in a reduced chance of physical inactivity. A broad knowledge of barriers associated with physical inactivity can allow us to identify patients at a high risk of not adhering to the recommended levels of physical activity. This study aims to analyze, through an experimental study with a quantitative and descriptive approach, the toxicity and identification of the 50% Lethal Concentration (LC50) of the reference and generic paracetamol drops, both commercially available and produced in Brazil, comparing them with each other. The lethality test was performed on Artemia salina according to the methodology described by Meyer (1982), with some modifications. When performing the toxicity test on Artemia salina, for generic paracetamol, the LC50 obtained after 24 hours was 998.3 ± 0.2μg/ mL. The reference paracetamol presented LC50 of 612.2 ± 1.3μg/mL. Based on the analysis of this research, it was found that the reference paracetamol presented signs of toxicity in nauplii of the microcrustacean Artemia salina, presenting a LC50 ≤1000μg/mL. Generic paracetamol showed a LC50 ≤1000μg/mL with a range above 1000 ug/mL indicating non-toxicity for this sample [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study sought to explore and externally validate the Carpenter instrument's efficacy in predicting postdischarge fall risk among older adults admitted to the emergency department (ED) for reasons other than falls or related injuries. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted on 779 patients aged ≥ 65 years from a tertiary hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, who were monitored for up to 6 months post‐ED hospitalization. The Carpenter instrument, which evaluates the four risk factors nonhealing foot sores, self‐reported depression, inability to self‐clip toenails, and prior falls, was utilized to assess fall risk. Follow‐up by telephone occurred at 30, 90, and 180 days to identify falls and mortality. Fine–Gray models estimated the predictive power of Carpenter instrument for future falls, considering death as a competing event and sociodemographic factors, frail status, and clinical measures as confounders. Results: Among 779 patients, 68 (9%) experienced a fall within 180 days post‐ED admission, and 88 (11%) died. The majority were male (54%), with a mean age of 79 years. Upon utilizing the Carpenter score, those with a higher fall risk (≥2 points) displayed more comorbidities, greater frailty, and increased clinical severity at baseline. Regression analyses showed that every additional point on the Carpenter score increased the hazard of falls by 73%. Two primary contributors to its predictive potential were identified: a history of falls in the preceding year and an inability to self‐clip toenails. However, the instrument's discriminative accuracy was suboptimal, with an area under the curve of 0.62. Conclusions: While the Carpenter instrument associated with a higher 6‐month postadmission fall risk among older adults post‐ED visit, its accuracy for individual patient decision making was limited. Given the significant impact of falls on health outcomes and health care costs, refining risk assessment tools remains essential. (1) Background: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) presents significant challenges in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, impacting patient outcomes and well-being. Understanding its prevalence and associated factors is crucial for effective patient care. (2) Methods: A systematic review of national and international databases on body dysmorphic disorder, plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery, and prevalence yielded 999 studies between 1878 and April 2024. Inclusion criteria focused on studies reporting prevalence while excluding those with small sample sizes (<20 participants), unclear diagnostic criteria for BDD, and non-English accessibility. (3) Results: A meta-analysis using a random effects model was conducted on 65 studies involving 17,107 patients to estimate the prevalence of BDD. The overall estimated prevalence of BDD was 18.6%; 10,776 (62.9%) were females, with a mean age of 35.5 ± 11.7 years. Subgroup meta-analysis found significant variability in effect sizes across countries and types of specialty, of which Brazil showed the highest proportion and dermatology exhibited the smallest. Meta-regression analysis found no significant relationship between the year of publication and prevalence rates. (4) Conclusions: Our findings update the current literature on BDD prevalence in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. We emphasize the importance of proactive screening and multidisciplinary care approaches to address the complex challenges posed by patients with BDD. Despite advances in neonatology, neonatal mortality from preventable causes remains high in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. This study aimed to analyze the determinants associated with neonatal and postneonatal mortality in newborns admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. A cohort study was carried out in a capital in the Brazilian Northeast from 2013 to 2018. The outcome studied was death. Poisson regression was performed in the multivariate analysis of variables. Four hundred and eighty newborns were eligible, and 8.1% (39 newborns) died. Among them, 34 died in the neonatal period. The determinants that remained significantly associated with neonatal and postneonatal mortality in the final adjustment model (p < 0.05) were history of abortion, perinatal asphyxia, early neonatal sepsis and umbilical venous catheterization. All causes of this outcome were preventable. The neonatal mortality rate, although it did not include twins, neonates with malformations incompatible with life and other conditions, was 3.47 deaths per thousand live births (95% CI:1.10−8.03‰), well below the national average. In this study, pregnant women from different social classes had in common a private plan for direct access to health services, which provided them with excellent care throughout pregnancy and postnatal care. These results indicate that reducing neonatal mortality is possible through public policies with strategies that promote improvements in access to health services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Sleep alterations are common in college students, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sociodemographic factors may predict these alterations in this population. OBJECTIVE: To identify the sociodemographic factors and health characteristics associated with the number of hours of sleep of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study carried out with 244 university students from a multicampi public university in the State of Bahia, Northeast Brazil. Data collection was performed online and participants answered a specific questionnaire to assess sleep hours, sociodemographic and health variables. RESULTS: Significant associations were observed between hours of sleep and older students (odds ratio adjusted –ORaj: 3.75; 95% Confidence Interval –CI: 1.81–7.75; p < 0.01), attending the final semesters (ORaj: 1.85; 95% CI: 1.05–3.25; p < 0.03), and who reported having some disease (ORaj: 2.18; 95% CI: 1.05–4.50; p < 0.03) with greater chances of getting less sleep. However, those who used tobacco (ORaj: 0.08; 95% CI: 0.01–0.45; p < 0.001) were likely to have more hours of sleep per night. CONCLUSION: Sleep restriction was common among participating college students, which has likely intensified due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions. The Brazilian Air Force (BAF) has developed physical evaluations focused on the demands required in combat scenarios, giving rise to the Simulated Tasks (STs). Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine test-retest reliability and investigate learning effects of the five STs established among the BAF. Fifty-six subjects performed five STs three times, after completing a previous familiarisation session. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the occurrence of learning effects, and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to identify the reliability of each ST. ANOVA revealed no significant differences in the subject's scores across trials for all the STs, and the ICCs ranged from 0.75 to 0.92 (p < 0.01). In conclusion, this study identified that the five STs showed no learning effects across three successive trials and exhibited high levels of reliability. Understanding the reliability and learning effects of the STs established among the Brazilian Air Force is crucial for their potential implementation. This study aimed to evaluate the practice of physical activity (PA) among adolescents and its association with characteristics of the urban environment of Brazilian capitals. Study with adolescents from the 26 Brazilian capitals and the Federal District participating in the National School Health Survey, 2015 edition. The association between regular practice of PA (≥300 minutes/week) and the dimensions of urban well-being (urban mobility, urban environmental conditions, urban housing conditions, urban collective services, and urban infrastructure) was examined using multilevel logistic regression. A total of 50,904 adolescents were evaluated, among which 20.7% were active. It was observed in the multiple model that adolescents who live in capitals with better urban environmental conditions, such as the presence of tree coverage, less open sewage, and less accumulated garbage around the houses, are more likely to be active (OR = 1.06; 95% CI:1.01;1.12). Problematic use of opioids by older adults is associated with adverse effects and has become a public health crisis worldwide. Ageing-related disabilities in activities of daily living (ADL) could promote unnecessary use of opioids in this population. This study evaluates the association between ADL disability and opioid consumption in Brazilian older adults. Study design- cross-sectional secondary data analysis of the second wave of the Brazil Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSI-Brazil). Data from the second wave of the Brazil Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSI-Brazil) were used. Older adults with chronic pain were included. ADL disability was measured using the Katz Index. The primary outcome was opioid consumption for chronic pain. The primary association was explored using logistic regression models adjusting for predetermined confounders. Sensitivity analyses evaluating model performance were done by calibrating and validating the model using randomly split equal sets. In those who reported presence of chronic pain (n = 2865), the prevalence of opioid use was 29% (95% CI:23.1%–35.6%). In adjusted models, participants with moderate and severe ADL disability had 1.6 (95% CI:1.13–2.32; P = 0.009) and 3.8 (95% CI: 1.80–7.90; P < 0.001) times higher odds of opioid consumption compared to no disability, respectively. Being female, alcohol consumption, higher pain intensity, history of dementia, fractures, and presence of ≥2 comorbidities were significantly associated with increased opioid use (P < 0.05). Nearly one-third of the Brazilian elderly population experiencing chronic pain reported using opioids. The functional decline during the process of ageing appears to be a risk factor for pain intolerance and opioid use. Multidisciplinary approaches to detect early ADL disabilities and improve mobility and access to assistive technologies need to be established to prevent opioid overuse and addiction in elderly populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal association of sleep with physical performance in a representative sample of non-institutionalised older adults residing in the municipality of São Paulo, Brazil. Prospective cohort study. The current longitudinal study used data extracted from the Health, Well-being, and Aging Study (Estudo Saúde Bem-Estar e Envelhecimento [SABE]). The study population consisted of individuals aged ≥60 years who participated in the study in 2010 or 2015. Dependent variables included the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and gait speed. Independent variables of interest were self-reported sleep difficulty, daytime sleepiness and sleep quality. The longitudinal association between sleep variables and the outcomes was evaluated using Generalised Estimating Equations (GEE) Models adjusted for covariates. All the variables, except age, sex and schooling, were assessed at baseline and follow-up visits (2010 and 2015). The analyses included 2205 observations from 1559 individuals. The population mean age was 72 years in 2010 and 71 years in 2015, with a higher prevalence of women in both years. Between 2010 and 2015, there was a decline in the SPPB score and gait speed. Daytime sleepiness was negatively associated with the SPPB score [Coef.: −0.38 (95% confidence interval {CI}: −0.56, −0.21)] and gait speed [Coef.: −0.03 (95% CI: −0.05, −0.01)]. Poor sleep quality was negatively associated with the SPPB score [Coef.: −0.29 (95% CI: −0.57, −0.01)] and gait speed [Coef.: −0.03 (95% CI: −0.06, −0.00)]. Daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality are associated with compromised physical performance in non-institutionalised older adults, and this association remained consistent over time. Objectives: To examine the association between social mobility and tooth loss in adults from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study and whether race modifies this association. Methods: The Oral Health Study used data from 541 individuals who were followed up to 31 years of age. Social mobility, composed of the participants' socioeconomic position (SEP) at birth and at age 30, was categorized as never poor, upwardly mobile, downwardly mobile and always poor. The outcome was the prevalence of at least one tooth lost due to dental caries when the participants were examined at 31 years of age. The effect modifier was race (Black/Brown versus white people). Log‐binomial regression models were used to estimate crude and sex‐adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and to determine whether the association varied with race. Statistical interactions were tested using an additive scale. Results: The prevalence of any tooth loss was 50.8% (n = 274). In social mobility groups, the prevalence of at least one tooth lost in the never‐poor group was about 31% points higher for Black/Brown (68.2%) than for white people (37.4%). Antagonistic findings were found for the interaction between race and social mobility (Sinergy Index = 0.48; 95% CI 0.24, 0.99; and relative excess of risk due to the interaction = −1.38; 95% CI −2.34, −0.42), suggesting that the observed joint effect of race and social mobility on tooth loss was lower than the expected sum of these factors. The estimates for Black/Brown people were smaller for those who were always poor during their lives, relative to their white counterparts. Conclusions: The findings suggest a higher prevalence of at least one tooth lost among people in the downward mobile SEP group and Black/Brown people. Greater racial inequity was found among Black/Brown people who had never experienced episodes of poverty, with Black/Brown people having a greater prevalence of at least one tooth lost than their white counterparts. This study aimed to assess the combination of video-based kinematic variables adjusted by intrinsic covariates to predict the relative eccentric force (RelF) during the Nordic curl. The participants (n = 21) performed Nordic curls (3 trials; 3-min rest) on a device measuring the eccentric force. The peaks were normalized by body weight. Kinovea software was used to track angular and linear velocity and acceleration from recorded videos. Two prediction models with multiple linear regression equations associated kinematic, anthropometric, and age variables to adjust the actual RelF. The equations obtained the predicted RelF. The actual RelF was inversely correlated with height (r = −.52), tangential (r = −.50) and centripetal accelerations (r = −.715), and angular velocity (r = −.70). The best prediction models combined angular velocity with age (F2,18 = 15.1, P =.001, r =.792, r2 =.627) and with height (F2,18 = 14.5, P =.001, r =.785, r2 =.616). No differences were observed between actual and predicted values (P =.993−.994), with good levels of agreement and consistency (intraclass correlation coefficient =.77−.78; Cronbach α =.86−.87). Bland–Altman results showed high levels of agreement and low biases. The standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change ranges were 0.46 to 0.49 N/kg and 1.28 to 1.36 N/kg, respectively. Also, the percentage of standard error of measurement was below 10% (7.92%–8.35%). The coefficient of variation analysis returned a 14.54% and 15.13% for each model, respectively. Purpose: This study analyzed day-to-day estimates of bidirectional associations between sleep parameters and intensity-specific physical activity and assessed whether the timing of physical activity influences these relationships. Methods: The sample was comprised of 651 high school students (51.2% female, 16.33 [1.0] y old) from southern Brazil. Physical activity and sleep were measured using accelerometers. Multilevel models were applied to test associations of nocturnal total sleep time, onset, and efficiency with moderate to vigorous and light (LPA) physical activity. Results: Higher engagement in moderate to vigorous physical activity and LPA was associated with increased total sleep time, and this effect was greater when physical activity was performed in the morning. Morning and evening LPA were associated with increased sleep efficiency and reduced total sleep time, respectively. Practice of LPA in the morning leads to early sleep onset, whereas evening LPA was associated with later onset. Higher total sleep time and later sleep onset were associated with lower moderate to vigorous physical activity and LPA on the following day. However, higher sleep efficiency was associated with increased LPA.
