Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentration and number of recovered oocytes (ROOC) are phenotypic parameters associated with in vitro embryo production (IVEP). More recently, anogenital distance (AGD) has been proposed as a proxy for fertility in dairy cattle that is easy to collect at a low cost. The aim of this study was to characterize the AGD and its phenotypic and genetic associations with AMH and IVEP in Bos indicus Gyr dairy cattle. The hypothesis was that the number of ROOC, in vitro–produced embryos, and AMH concentration would increase as the AGD decreases. From July to December 2021, a single morphometrical measurement of AGD was collected in 552 donors from 6 herds in Brazil. A subset of donors had AMH assayed on the same day. Only ovum pick-up events that occurred up to 12 mo preceding and 7 mo succeeding the AGD measurement were used to assess the association between AGD, AMH, and IVEP. Thus, 472 donors (1,551 ovum pick-up events and 140 donors with AMH) were considered in the analysis. A raw average was calculated for each individual donor's ROOC, viable oocytes, total produced embryos, viability rate, and embryo rate (defined as total produced embryos/viable oocytes). Comparisons were conducted within the age categories of 3 to <6 yr or 6 to <10 yr. Phenotypic associations were performed in SAS software (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). Genetic correlations were estimated using the BLUPF90 family of programs. The AGD (128.7 mm ± 14; mean ± standard deviation) had a normal distribution and was highly variable (83 to 172 mm) among the Gyr population. Our experimental hypothesis was partially supported by a phenotypic association of a greater number of total produced embryos (R2 = 0.023) as AGD decreased. Our results failed to support an increase in AMH concentration along with a decrease in AGD. In addition, positive and low genetic correlations were observed between AGD and viable oocytes (r = 0.08), and embryo rate (r = 0.20). A greater number of viable oocytes and embryos were observed in donors in the high compared with intermediate and low ROOC categories within both age categories. The age interval of 3 to <6 yr showed a greater number of recovered and viable oocytes for the high AMH compared with the low category, but no differences were observed among the AGD categories. In summary, for the Gyr breed, AGD was phenotypically inversely associated with a quantity-related parameter, such as the total number of produced embryos. In contrast, AGD showed a low genetic correlation with qualitative-related outcomes such as viable oocytes and embryo rate. Simple Summary: This study investigated the effects of pain relief treatments on behaviour and weight gain in 92 Nellore and crossbred (F1 Aberdeen Angus × Nellore) heifer calves (aged around 120 days) subjected to hot-iron branding on the cheek after vaccination against brucellosis. Four treatments were compared: Control (CO, no pain relief); local anaesthesia (LA, subcutaneous anaesthetic); analgesic (LT, intramuscular meloxicam); and local anaesthetic and analgesic (LL, both local anaesthesia and meloxicam). Calves in treatments CO and LT were subjected to face manipulation simulating application of local anaesthetic without introducing the needle. Facial and body expressions, flight speed, and body weight were recorded before, during, and five (5-d) and 60 days (60-d) after hot-iron branding. No effect of pain relief was observed for most calves studied. The only difference observed was higher tension ('tense') at 5-d in CO calves. All calves showed fear and stress responses during restraint and hot-iron branding, which probably masked pain responses. In conclusion, hot-iron facial branding impoverishes calf welfare and, due to the additional handling involved, adoption of a pain relief protocol is not an efficient way to minimise welfare impacts. Hot-iron branding is still commonly performed in cattle farming in tropical countries, and possibly has negative consequences for animal welfare and weight gain. This study examined the behavioural and weight gain responses of pure and crossbred Nellore heifer calves subjected to hot-iron branding on the cheek, without and with use of anaesthesia and analgesia. Ninety-two heifer calves, around 120 days old, were studied prospectively when subjected to hot-iron branding on the cheek (a statutory procedure in Brazil following brucellosis vaccination). Four randomly selected groups of calves were allocated to four treatments: no pain control (CO); subcutaneous anaesthetic local block (LA); intramuscular analgesia (meloxicam) (LT); and local anaesthesia plus meloxicam (LL). Behaviour, flight speed and body weight were evaluated before, during, and five (5-d) and 60 days (60-d) after branding. For these parameters, the only difference observed was higher tension in the CO group 5-d post-branding, suggesting a short-term negative effect of branding without pain control. The limited effects of the pain control treatments suggest interference in pain assessment by other factors, such as expression of fear and stress. Despite the lack of differences observed in behaviour and production parameters, facial hot-iron branding is an obvious welfare issue and, due to the additional handling involved, adoption of a simple pain relief protocol is not sufficient to minimise the welfare impact. Simple Summary: Reproductive biotechnologies are important strategies to enforce the production of genetically superior animals. The fixed-time artificial insemination is widely used in Brazil and it is especially important in farms located in remote areas, contributing to a better management and increase in genetics and productivity in areas such the Lower Amazon. We evaluated two different protocols of fixed-time insemination using two different hormones in the Nellore heifer raised under tropical conditions. The protocol of the fixed-time artificial insemination using equine chorionic gonadotrophin presented a better outcome in the pregnancy rate compared to the protocol using follicle stimulating hormone. Our tested protocol may be the most suitable alternative to increase conception rates in animals that are raised in an extensive system under tropical conditions in the Amazon. This study aimed to evaluate follicular dynamics and pregnancy rates in Nellore heifers submitted to fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols associated with equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) or follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Nellore heifers (n = 259) were used, divided into two studies. Experiment I evaluated the ovarian follicular dynamics in 64 Nellore heifers submitted to different FTAI protocols (n = 32/group) using either FSH or eCG. In Experiment II, the pregnancy rate was evaluated in 195 heifers submitted to FTAI protocols and divided into two groups: FSH (n = 97) and eCG (n = 98). In Experiment I, the ultrasound examination showed that the maximum diameter of the dominant and preovulatory follicles and the ovulation time were similar between the FSH and eCG groups (p > 0.05). However, the ovulation rate was higher in the eCG group when compared to FSH (p = 0.014). In Experiment II, females that received eCG presented a higher pregnancy rate (58.1%) when compared to FSH (40.2%) (p = 0.012). The use of eCG in the FTAI protocol in Nellore heifers promoted a higher ovulation rate and increased pregnancy rate and may be the most suitable alternative to increase conception rates in animals that are raised in an extensive system under tropical conditions in the Amazon. In Brazil, heifers typically calve at 36-48 months. Due to the high demand for meat and the need to reduce slaughter age, high supplementation has become commonly used in beef cattle farming. However, the literature remains scarce on studies that explore the impact of grazing management during the background phase on the productivity and reproductive efficiency of young Nellore heifers. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two-herbage allowances (HA) on forage characteristics, performance, physiology and reproductive parameters of replacement Nellore heifers. Ninety weaned heifers [169 ± 19 kg of shrunk body weight (SBW); 210 ± 28 days of age] were blocked by initial BW and randomly assigned to receive different HA: (1) High herbage allowance (HHA: 7.2 kg DM/kg BW) and (2) Low herbage allowance (LHA: 3.3 kg DM/kg BW); and divided into six paddocks, totaling 12 paddocks. The experimental period was divided into the growing phase (D173) and the reproductive season (D83). Continuous stocking with a variable stocking rate was used. The supplement was provided daily with expected intake of around 10 g/kg of BW. The HHA pasture showed greater values of canopy height, greater HA, and lower values of CP and CP: in vitro digestible DM ratio than the LHA pasture over the days of the study (P ≤ 0.05). Herbage mass and the green stem proportion were lower in LHA pasture (P < 0.01), while the green leaf (g/kg DM) and senescent stem proportions (g/kg DM) were higher (P = 0.080) when compared to HHA pasture. Heifers maintained on HHA pasture had a higher average daily gain (P < 0.01), forage intake (P < 0.003), higher SBW (P < 0.01), Longissimus area (P < 0.01), and 12th-rib fat thickness (P < 0.01) than those kept in the LHA pasture. The proportion of heifers that reached the weight at maturity on D173 (P = 0.027) and the proportion of pubertal pregnancy heifers (P = 0.042) were greatest in the HHA treatment. The blood urea nitrogen (P = 0.002) was higher in heifers maintained in the LHA pasture. Heifers maintained in HHA pasture showed higher values of relative abundance of mRNA for UGT1A6 (P = 0.004) and IGFBP3 (P = 0.072). A greater understanding of factors influencing fertility is essential to improve pregnancy rates and reduce the occurrence of embryonic mortality in beef herds. The objective of the current study was to evaluate retrospective data of pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) and pregnancy loss in Nelore females subjected to timed-AI (TAI) in Brazil. Data from 40,104 TAI collected from six breeding seasons (2016–2022) were analyzed, and the effects of animal category (e.g., classification based on age and parity), farm, month of parturition, sire, sire breed (Nelore vs Angus), estrus expression at TAI, animal temperament, and body condition scores (BCS) were evaluated. P/AI and pregnancy loss were affected (P < 0.001) by animal category. There was also an effect of farm (P = 0.0013) on P/AI and pregnancy loss (P = 0.001), as P/AI ranged from 49.28% and 55.58% and pregnancy loss from 3.37% to 6.89% across the herds evaluated. Month of parturition also affected (P < 0.001) P/ AI and was higher for cows that became pregnant at the beginning of the previous breeding season. Calmer animals, presenting lower velocity scores while exiting the chute following TAI, achieved higher P/AI (P < 0.001). Lower BCS at TAI was associated (P < 0.001) with increased pregnancy loss, and BCS gain following AI was associated (P < 0.001) with reduced rates of embryonic mortality. There was a major effect (P < 0.001) of sire on P/AI and pregnancy loss, as P/AI ranged from 11% to 79%, and embryonic mortality from 0% to 40% for the bulls used in the study, highlighting the importance of the sire fertility on overall pregnancy success. Context: Lactation persistency (LP) is an economically important characteristic to include in the selection objectives of the Gyr breed. Two persistency measures were tested to establish their contribution to the genetic evaluation of milk production in this genotype. The second measure of persistency studied would be the more appropriate measure to use in the genetic evaluation of lactation persistency. Aim: The aim of this work was to study LP in Gyr cows by using a random regression model (RRM) in two-trait analysis. Methods: Test-day milk yields (TDMY) of the first two lactations of Gyr cows were analysed. RRM was performed by Bayesian inference using the GIBBS3F90 program. Fourth-order Legendre polynomials were used to describe the random additive genetic and permanent environmental effects of the animal. The fixed effects included in the model were contemporary group and, as covariates, age of cow at calving and the regression function according to the TDMY class of lactation as the average trajectories of lactation curve, distinguished by calving order. Two persistency measures (PS i , i.e. PS1 and PS2) were used in the analyses. Rank correlations were calculated between the predicted breeding values for PS i , 305-day lactation milk yield (MY305), and the regression coefficients a 0 and a 1, to determine the percentage of matching animals between rankings when different selection intensities are applied on the basis of the ranking for MY305. Key results: The heritability estimates for PS1, PS2 and for MY305 were 0.19, 0.12 and 0.41 respectively, in the first lactation, and 0.43, 0.27 and 0.38 in the second lactation. The genetic correlation between MY305 and PS1 was negative and of low magnitude. The rank correlation between breeding values for PS i , obtained for bulls with at least five daughters with production records, was higher than 0.80 in the two lactation periods. Conclusions: The results indicated that PS2 is the more suitable of the two persistency measures used in this work, for inclusion in genetic evaluations of lactation persistency in Brazilian Gyr cows. Implications: PS2 must be included as a selection criteria in a breeding program for the Gyr breed. The Gyr breed has been selected in Brazil for 40 years, mainly for total milk yield. The lactation persistency is closely related to the profitability of a milk production system. More persistent cows need less inputs, they get less sick, have more stayability and behave better reproductively. The results indicated that it is possible to make a selection for lactation persistency and that the second measure considered is better suited to the behavior of milk yield in Gyr breed. Context: The use of crosses between Bos taurus and Bos indicus has boosted cattle production in tropical areas of Brazil, improving carcass and meat standards. However, there is little information on Canchim animals crossed with Nellore. Additionally, freezing is a preservation method frequently used by consumers, which allows meat to be preserved for a prolonged period, but little is known regarding this effect in meat frozen for 60 days from crossbred animals. Aims: The present study sought to evaluate the carcass performance and characteristics, and the effects of freezing prior to ageing on the meat of animals from different genetic groups finished in a feedlot. Methods: A total of 26 male cattle were used, consisting of Angus × Nellore (AAN), Canchim × Nellore (CAN) and Nellore (NEL), finished in feedlot. The carcasses were evaluated after slaughter. The steaks (Longissimus thoracis) were submitted to freezing for 0, 30 and 60 days before ageing, and were then aged for 1, 7 and 14 days. Key results: Consumption and performance was greater for AAN and CAN animals. The AAN and CAN crossbred cattle presented higher final liveweight, hot carcass weight, dressing-out percentage and rib eye area. Freezing did not affect the meat luminosity, and it reduced the shear force and the purge at 14 days of ageing when frozen for 30 and 60 days. Conclusions: The crossbreed between Canchim × Nellore animals is an alternative for termination in a feedlot. Meats frozen before ageing were more tender. Implications: Crossbred animals have better carcass performance and characteristics and the pre-freezing process yielded more tender meat. The Canchim is an alternative for crossing with pure Bos indicus animals. The use of breed crosses is an alternative for increasing animal production. For this purpose, breeds such as the Aberdeen Angus are already widely used, while Canchim animals present themselves as a viable alternative. The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) contains many genes that play key roles in initiating and regulating immune responses. This includes the polymorphic MHCI and MHCII genes that present epitopes to CD8+ and CD4+ T‐cells, respectively. Consequently, the characterisation of the repertoire of MHC genes is an important component of improving our understanding of the genetic variation that determines the outcomes of immune responses. In cattle, MHC (BoLA) research has predominantly focused on Holstein‐Friesian animals (as the most economically important breed globally), although the development of high‐throughput approaches has allowed the BoLA‐DRB3 repertoire to be studied in a greater variety of breeds. In a previous study we reported on the development of a MiSeq‐based method to enable high‐throughput and high‐resolution analysis of bovine MHCI repertoires. Herein, we report on the expansion of this methodology to incorporate analysis of the BoLA‐DRB3 and its application to analyse MHC diversity in a large cohort of cattle from Brazil (>500 animals), including representatives from the three major Bos indicus breeds present in Brazil – Guzerat, Gir and Nelore. This large‐scale description of paired MHCI‐DRB3 repertoires in Bos indicus cattle has identified a small number of novel DRB3 alleles, a large number of novel MHCI alleles and haplotypes, and provided novel insights into MHCI‐MHCII association ‐ further expanding our knowledge of bovine MHC diversity. The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus causes significant economic losses to cattle production systems and is a main barrier to the introduction of Bos taurus breeds and their crosses in Brazil. These breeds have the genetic potential to generate animals that are more productive, but they are also more susceptible to R. microplus. One of the alternatives for conventional tick control is the use of strategic control, aiming at delaying or even preventing the development of its resistance to acaricides. The present study aimed to evaluate the economic losses caused by tick infestation on the productive performance of two breeds of beef cattle and to evaluate the economic efficiency of tick strategic control and its impacts on beef cattle production systems. Animal weights were obtained from the literature and were used to calculate the weight loss in kilograms (kg) and the economic loss (US$) caused by R. microplus infestation. The cost/loss ratio of performing strategic control was also calculated. The data show that tick infestation causes economic losses to the breeds and groups of animals evaluated and reduces animal performance (weight loss). The results show a loss of US$34.61/animal in the backgrounding phase and US$7.97/animal in the finishing phase for Brangus animals and its crosses. In conclusion, the data show that strategic control is economically efficient for Brangus animals in the backgrounding phase, independent of the methods used for acaricide application. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate performance and carcass traits of Guzerat-based beef bulls. In experiment 1, Guzerat; F1 Guzerat x Holstein ('Guzholstein'); F1 Guzerat x Nellore ('Guzonell'); and 1/2 Simmental + 1/4 Guzerat + 1/4 Nellore (Three-Cross) bulls (n = 12 each group) were kept in a feedlot for 84 days, receiving sorghum silage and concentrate supplement. 'Guzholstein' bulls had greater average daily gain (ADG; 1.7 kg/day) compared with 'Guzonell' (1.4 kg/day), but similar to Three-Cross and Guzerat (1.6 and 1.5 kg/day respectively). 'Guzonell' bulls gained less bodyweight (BW; 85.8 kg); however, the gain : feed ratio did not differ among groups. Dry matter intake (DMI) was less for Guzerat (11.8 kg) compared with other groups (12.4, 12.4, and 12.6 kg for 'Guzholstein', 'Guzonell', and Three-Cross respectively); DMI, as a percentage of BW, was lesser for Three-Cross bulls (2.5%) compared with other groups (2.7%, 2.8%, and 2.6% for Guzerat, 'Guzholstein', and 'Guzonell' respectively). In experiment 2, 18 bulls from experiment 1 were randomly selected from 'Guzonell', 'Guzholstein' and Three-Cross groups (n = 6, each breed group), transferred to a state-inspected slaughterhouse, and humanely slaughtered. Three-Cross bulls had greater carcass weight gain (80 kg), greater striploin yield (2.39%), and lesser leg yield (1.86%). 'Guzholstein' bulls had lesser dressing-out percentage and greater liver yield (51.6 and 1.28% respectively), whereas 'Guzonell' bulls had greater rump yield (1.47%). Forequarter yield, hindquarter weight and yield, eye round, flank steak, rump skirt, topside, rump cap, head, heart, lungs and trachea, spleen, tail, and tongue yield did not differ among groups. Despite the limited number of animals used in these experiments, we can conclude that all breed groups have potential for meat production because carcass traits meet the Brazilian beef industry standards, and 'Guzholstein' bulls could be an option for producers to diversify revenues. Guzerat (Bos indicus breed) animals have been used in crossbreeding programs for either beef, dairy or dual purposes, but studies evaluating their performance and carcass traits are scarce. We evaluated performance, carcass traits and meat cuts of Guzerat-based bulls. Results from this study indicate that all groups evaluated have potential for meat production since they meet the Brazilian beef industry standards, and bulls from a dual-purpose cross can be an option for dairy producers, to diversify revenues. The Neospora caninum microsatellite markers were applied to clinical samples. Genotyping technology involving fluorescently labelled DNA fragment analysis was used in combination with DNA sequencing for markers with complex repetitive sequences. Nineteen DNA samples from 15 brains and four hearts of naturally infected non-aborted zebuine foetuses from abattoirs in Goiás, Brazil. N. caninum had been detected in these foetuses by nested-PCR of the internal transcribed spacer-1 rRNA region, and the samples were analysed using these microsatellites. Seven complete or nearly complete allele profiles were obtained from six foetuses. Three distinct profiles of N. caninum were identified in a unique microregion (Meia Ponte) of Goiás. Two alleles for the same marker were detected in a unique foetus that was probably infected with two different strains. A new allele for one of the microsatellites is described. The multilocus analysis performed here revealed a preliminary means of discriminating between individual strains according to their geographical origins. These are the first results that have been obtained regarding the molecular characterisation of strains of N. caninum from infected zebuine foetuses in South America and reveal for the first time that there are genotypic differences in the strains that are responsible for foetal transmission in zebuine foetuses. Abstract: Nellore beef cattle, a Bos indicus (Zebu) breed, is well adapted to tropical conditions and has allowed Brazil to become one of the largest producers of red meat. Nevertheless, B. indicus breeds are reported to have less tender meat than Bos taurus. This study was designed to identify genes associated with meat tenderness and thus provides important information for breeding programs. A group of 138 animals was evaluated for longissimus thoracis muscle shear force (SF). Animals with the highest and lowest SF values (six animals each) were then selected for protein abundance studies. Samples were subjected to two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) followed by peptide sequencing through mass spectrometry (MS) to identify differentially expressed proteins associated with SF values. Seventeen differentially expressed spots were observed (p<0.05) between the two groups. The 13 proteins identified included structural proteins (alpha actin-1, MLC1, MLC3, MLC2F and tropomyosin), related to cell organization (HSPB1 and HSP70), metabolism (beta-LG, ACBD6 and Complex III subunit I) and some uncharacterized proteins. Results confirm the existence of differentially expressed proteins associated with SF, which can lead to a better understanding of mechanisms involved in meat tenderness. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Introduction: Gir is a Bos indicus breed originally from India, first imported to Brazil in 1850. High-performance Dairy Gir has been systematically selected in Brazil from its arrival. Since the major phenotypic difference between Gir in India and Brazil is a higher milk production in the former, it is speculated that Brazilian Gir was strategically crossed with Holstein or another Bos taurus to improve milk yield. This study evaluated the purity of Brazilian Gir breed stocks from BASA Farms in Brazil, trying to identify possible admixture events with other cattle breeds based on DNA analysis., Materials and Methods: The population included 1061 pure registered individuals genotyped using two commercial platforms with 37 k and 25 k SNPs. Admixture analysis was performed individually to estimate levels of genomic composition derived from six different reference populations, three indicine and three taurine breeds., Results: A Gir ancestry of 99% or higher was found for 94.2% of the population, while the remaining showed levels of non-Gir ancestry up to 6.8%. Only five individuals were identified with possible taurine ancestry, all of them exhibiting levels lower than 2%. The remaining non-Gir ancestry identified was derived from indicine breeds. The levels of admixture observed in the population were from low to non-detectable. No consistent patterns of admixture were observed indicating sustained introgression of taurine lines as means of genetic improvement., Conclusion: According to these results, genetic improvement achieved by Brazilian Gir breeders is the result of within-breed selection methods applied intensively over the past five decades, rather than the result from sustained introgression., (© 2022. Nelore cattle breed was farmed worldwide due to its economic importance in the beef market and adaptation to the tropics. In Brazil, purebred Nelore animals (PO) receive a certificate from the breeders' association based on the animal's genealogy and morphological characterization. The top 20 to 30% of the superior animals are eligible to receive the Special Certificate of Identification and Production (CEIP), meaning animals from this category were selected and evaluated in a breeding program to improve economically important traits. We used whole-genome sequencing and approaches based on haplotype differentiation and allelic differentiation to detect regions of selection signatures in Nelore cattle by comparing animals from PO and CEIP categories. From a total of 150 animals, a hierarchical clustering analysis was performed to choose the more unrelated animals from each category (16 PO and 40 CEIP). The hapFLK statistic was performed, and extensions of hapFLK values were investigated considering continuous regions with significant q-values. The Weir and Cockerham's Fst estimator (wcFst) was computed using the GPAT++ software library. The total of 82,326 SNPs with hapFLK values passed the FDR control (q-value<0.05), and 718 segments were target as signatures of selection. A total of 1713 highly differentiated genomic regions were identified based on the segmentFst approach. The signatures of selection were spread across the genome. Annotation of overlapping selection signature regions between the two methods revealed 118 genes in common. A variant located within the 3′ region of the BOLA-DRB3 gene was found as a promising candidate polymorphism. Within genomic regions that deserves attention, we found genes previously associated with adaptation to tropical environments (HELB), growth and navel size (HMGA2), fat deposition and domestication (IRAK3), and feed efficiency and postmortem carcass traits (GABRG3). The genes BOLA-DQA2, BOLA-DQB, BOLA-DQA5, BOLA-DQA1, BOLA-DRB3, ENSBTAG00000038397 on chromosome 23 are part of the Bovine Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) Class II gene family, representing good candidates for immune response and adaptation to tropical conditions. The BoLA family genes and the interaction of ROBO1 with SLIT genes appeared in the enrichment results. Genomic regions located in intronic regions were also identified and might play a regulatory role in traits under selection in PO and CEIP subpopulations. Abstract: Rhipicephalus microplus infestation causes heavy losses in cattle. The majority of farmers control the cattle tick by using long-acting drugs throughout the year, which evidently increases selection pressure for drug resistance. Partial selective treatment (PST) may be used to directly reduce selection pressure by treating only the portion of the herd that is most infested. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of PST in two herds of beef cows and the effect of breed tolerance. The Santiago (n =306 animals) and the São Francisco de Assis (n =204 animals) herds were composed of up to eight pure breeds of Bos taurus and Bos indicus and their crosses and were evaluated during the first and second (8 months) tick generations. Ticks larger than 4.5mm were counted on one side of the animal, and the animals were treated when numbers exceeded 20 ticks per host. On both farms, the tick-tolerant breeds with a high proportion of B. indicus (Braford, Brangus, and Nellore) consistently carried fewer ticks than Charolais. The economical evaluation showed an average profit margin in the use of PST of 674.25% and 1394.5% on the Santiago and São Francisco de Assis farms, respectively, in comparison to all-herd treatment. These results indicate that PST is a reliable tool for health management and may be used as a standard protocol for tick control with significant economic benefits on farms. In addition, the maintenance of the highest possible tolerant/resilient breeds is also an essential factor that should be considered in today''s more sustainable animal production systems. Abstract: Important information about the Brazilian agribusiness, population and economy are presented in this paper, as well as details of beef production, market, industry and production system, to inform people involved in meat industry about details on demography, production, economy and production systems of a country that is the largest player in beef exports in the world and that uses, mostly, Bos indicus based bovine population, reared under pasture conditions, for meat production purposes. Herd size, genetic evaluation programs, quantity of beef produced and market is informed, with figures about the global and major players’ production. Some discussion related to environmental concerns, methane emission and carbon fixation is also presented, as well as meat quality. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the genetic correlations among real-time ultrasound carcass, BW, and scrotal circumference (SC) traits in Nelore cattle. Carcass traits, measured by real-time ultrasound of the live animal, were recorded from 2002 to 2004 on 10 farms across 6 Brazilian states on 2,590 males and females ranging in age from 450 to 599 d. Ultrasound records of LM area (LMA) and backfat thickness (BF) were obtained from cross-sectional images between the 12th and 13th ribs, and rump fat thickness (RF) was measured between the hook and pin bones over the junction between gluteus medius and biceps femoris muscles. Also, BW (n = 22,778) and SC (n = 5,695) were recorded on animals born between 1998 and 2003. The BW traits were 120, 210, 365, 450, and 550-d standardized BW (W120, W210, W365, W450, and W550), plus BW (WS) and hip height (HH) on the ultrasound scanning date. The SC traits were 365-, 450-, and 550-d standardized SC (SC365, SC450, and SC550). For the BW and SC traits, the database used was from the Nelore Breeding Program–Nelore Brazil. The genetic parameters were estimated with multivariate animal models and REML. Estimated genetic correlations between LMA and other traits were 0.06 (BF), -0.04 (RF), 0.05 (HH), 0.58 (WS), 0.53 (W120), 0.62 (W210), 0.67 (W365), 0.64 (W450 and W550), 0.28 (SC365), 0.24 (SC450), and 0.00 (SC550). Estimated genetic correlations between BF and with other traits were 0.74 (RF), -0.32 (HH), 0.19 (WS), -0.03 (W120), -0.10 (W210), 0.04 (W365), 0.01 (W450), 0.06 (W550), 0.17 (SC365 and SC450), and -0.19 (SC550). Estimated genetic correlations between RF and other traits were -0.41 (HH), -0.09 (WS), -0.13 (W120), -0.09 (W210), -0.01 (W365), 0.02 (W450), 0.03 (W550), 0.05 (SC365), 0.11 (SC450), and -0.18 (SC550). These estimates indicate that selection for carcass traits measured by real-time ultrasound should not cause antagonism in the genetic improvement of SC and BW traits. Also, selection to increase HH might de- crease subcutaneous fat as correlated response. Abstract: In Experiments 1, 2, and 3, we evaluated the effects of temporary weaning (TW), equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) treatments on results of a fixed-time artificial insemination (TAI) protocol in postpartum Bos indicus cows. In Experiment 1, treatment with 400 IU eCG or with TW for 48h consistently improved pregnancy rates (PRs) at TAI, but, in Experiment 2, FSH treatment was less effective than eCG or TW. In Experiment 3, the inclusion of eCG treatment in cows subjected to TW did not improve PRs. We concluded that TW or 400 IU eCG should be included in the TAI protocol in postpartum Bos indicus cows to enhance fertility. In Experiment 4, we used records from heifers and cows treated with the proposed protocol during the 2006–2007 (n =27,195) and 2007–2008 (n =36,838) breeding seasons from multiple locations in Brazil to evaluate factors potentially affecting PRs. Overall PR at TAI was 49.6% (31,786 of 64,033). Pregnancy rate differed (P <0.01) among farm within location (results ranging between 26.8% and 68.0%; P <0.01), cow group within farm, by breed (Bos indicus, 48.3% [26,123 of 54,145]; Bos taurus, 61.7% [3652 of 5922]; and crossbred Bos indicus × Bos taurus, 50.7% [2011 of 3966]), category (nulliparous, 39.6% [2095 of 5290]; suckled primiparous, 45.2% [3924 of 8677]; suckled multiparous, 51.8% [24,245 of 46,767]; and nonsuckled multiparous, 46.1% [1522 of 3299]), body condition score at TAI (≤2.5, 43.0% [3409 of 7923]; 3.0, 49.6% [18,958 of 38,229]; and ≥3.5, 52.7% [9419 of 17,881]). Days postpartum at beginning of protocol did not affect PR (30 to 60 d, 47.6% [4228 of 8881]; 61 to 90 d, 51.7% [16,325 to 31,572]; and 91 to 150 d, 50.8% [7616 to 14,991]; P >0.1). Pregnancy rate was also consistently affected (P <0.01) by sire (results ranging from 7.2% to 77.3%) and artificial insemination technician (results ranging from 15.1% to 81.8%). Five experiments were conducted on commercial farms in Brazil designed to develop the basis for an estrus synchronization protocol using melengestrol acetate (MGA) in Bos indicus cattle. These studies resulted in the development of the following protocol: 0.5 mg·d-1 of MGA between d -14 and -1; 2.0 mg i.m. injection of estradiol cypionate on d -9; 48 h temporary weaning between d 0 and 2; and natural service beginning on d 0. The basis of this protocol was to induce estrous cyclicity before postpartum loss of body condition, prevent premature luteolysis, eliminate the need for labor required to detect estrus, and consequently increase the likelihood of pregnancy early during the postpartum period. This treatment effectively induced estrous cyclicity among anestrous cows, synchronized estrus activity, and prevented premature luteolysis with no negative effect on pregnancy. Zebu breeds play an important role in cattle production systems in Brazil. To assess the genetic variability from animals in the Herd Books of Nelore, Gir and Guzerat breeds, generation intervals, inbreeding, effective population size and parameters of gene origin (effective number of founders, ancestors and founder genomes) were calculated using pedigree records from 1938 to 1998. Breed subdivision was quantified by Wright’s F-statistics. Calculations were separately carried out for consecutive 4-year intervals in the period 1979–98. Generation interval was around 8 years for the three breeds. Total inbreeding increased in all the breeds reaching values of 2.13%, 2.28% and 1.75%. Effective population size decreased from 85 to 68 in Nelore, from 70 to 45 in Gir and remained nearly constant around 104 in Guzerat. The quantities assessing the number of contributing ancestors decreased with time in all the breeds, and in the last analysed period the most important ancestor accounted for 14%, 3.1% and 4.1% in Nelore, Gir and Guzerat, respectively. Results indicate that the studied breeds are suffering from a loss of genetic variability which can result in negative effects on breeding and conservation purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The meta-analysis methodology was applied in this study to evaluate factors that affect the carcass quality components in beef cattle (rib eye area - AOL and fat thickness - EGC, measured between the 12th and the 13th ribs) and to compare them in different genetic groups. Data from 215 measures of AOL and 209 measures of EGC, from 65,174 animals, extracted from 36 papers published between 1985 and 2006 were used. The Restricted Maximum Likelihood Method and an animal model that considered AOL and EGC as functions of the fixed effects of country from where the data come from; animal category; feed system; measure methodology; Bos indicus, british and continental Bos taurus gene contribution; age and weight at measure, were used. The observed averages for AOL and e EGC were 63.5cm² and 4.2mm, respectively. The animals were in average 552.22 days old at the measure of the characteristics and had 468.47kg of live weight. The use of meta-analysis permitted to get generalized conclusions about AOL and EGC: animals rose in the EUA presented values significantly superior for AOL and EGC when compared with those rose in Australia and Brazil; castrated and the entire males presented bigger AOL measures (do not differing among them) compared to females, and females presented bigger EGC. The feed system, confined and do not confined, were superior to the greasing system. The Continental Bos taurus genotypes presented bigger AOL values, British Bos taurus presented bigger EGC values, and Bos indicus presented intermediate values. The measures taken in the carcass (pos mortis) and by ultra son (in vivo) were not different. The increase in the characteristics decreased with the age and live weight increase. In Study I, 72 bulls were assigned randomly to one of three treatment groups: LHRHO-immunized, castrated, and intact. Immunized animals (n = 25) received a primary and two booster injections of ovalbumin-LHRH-7 and thioredoxin-LHRH-7 fusion proteins on d 0, 141, and 287. Twenty-three bulls were surgically castrated on d 141, and 24 served as intact controls. All animals were slaughtered on d 385, at approximately 3 yr of age. In Study II, 216 bulls were assigned randomly to the same three treatments as in Study I; however, because of a drought in the area, bulls were kept on pasture an additional year, and a fourth treatment was added, in which one-half the LHRH-immunized bulls received an additional booster on d 639 (fourth immunization). All animals in Study II were slaughtered on d 741 (4 yr of age). Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone antibodies increased following each immunization for immunized bulls, but they were not detectable in castrate or intact animals in either study. Consequently, scrotal circumference was suppressed in immunized bulls compared with intact controls in both studies. By d 287, serum concentrations of testosterone in LHRH-immunized bulls were decreased compared with intact controls (P < 0.01). In both studies, testes and epididymal weights at slaughter were greater (P < 0.01) for intact (500 ± 17 and 60 ± 2 g, respectively) than for immunized bulls (173 ± 22 and 26±2 g, respectively) and fourth immunization bulls (78 ± 23 and 20 ± 2 g, respectively; Study II). At the end of each study, BW was greater (P < 0.01) for intact bulls than for castrated and LHRH- immunized animals. In these two studies, the efficacy of the LHRH fusion proteins to induce an affect similar to that of surgical castration was considered 92 and 93%, respectively. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate sexual development in early- and late-maturing Nelore (Bos indicus) and Canchim (3/8 Bos indicus × 5/8 Bos taurus crossbred) bulls and to determine predictors of sexual precocity, and pubertal and maturity status. In Experiment 1, 12 Nelore bulls where examined from 300 to 900 days of age. Puberty was characterized by an ejaculate containing ≥50 million sperm with ≥10% motile sperm, and maturity by an ejaculate containing ≥70% morphologically normal sperm. In Experiment 2, 28 Canchim bulls where examined from 295 to 488 days of age and puberty was characterized by an ejaculate containing ≥30% motile sperm. In both experiments, bulls were classified as early- or late-maturing based on age at puberty. Early-maturing bulls were younger (P<0.05) than late-maturing bulls at puberty (527 days versus 673 days in Experiment 1 and 360 days versus 461 days in Experiment 2) and at maturity (660 days versus 768 days in Experiment 1). In general, early-maturing bulls were heavier and had greater scrotal circumference (SC), testes, and testicular vascular cone diameter than late-maturing bulls during the experimental period. Scrotal circumference adjusted for 365 days of age was a good predictor of sexual precocity; minimum yearling SC of 19 and 24 cm for Nelore and Canchim bulls, respectively, had the best predictive values. Early-maturing bulls were lighter and had smaller SC at puberty than late-maturing bulls; therefore, sexual precocity was not related to the attainment of a threshold body weight or testicular size earlier, but to lower thresholds in early-maturing bulls. When predictors of pubertal status were evaluated, SC had the best sensitivity/specificity relationship in Nelore bulls, and high sensitivity and specificity in Canchim bulls. When predictors of sexual maturity were evaluated in Nelore bulls, age, weight, and SC had similar sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values. At puberty, approximately 60% of the sperm present in the ejaculate were morphologically defective. Changes in semen quality after puberty in Nelore bulls were characterized by increased motility and proportion of morphologically normal sperm, with a decrease in the proportion of major sperm defects. In conclusion, early-maturing bulls were more developed in the pre-pubertal period and attained puberty at earlier stages of body and testicular development than late-maturing bulls. Yearling SC could be used to select bulls for sexual precocity and SC was the best predictor of pubertal status. • Increasing levels of wet distillers grains can shift propionate concentration in ruminal fluid. • Results showed WDG can be fed in finishing diets to improve energy intake with optimum level at 300 g/kg dietary inclusion. • We observed a tendency to increase S. ruminantium population with increasing levels of wet distillers grains. The supply of wet distillers grains (WDG) has been growing in Brazil, with the increase in corn ethanol production. However, little is known about de-oiled corn WDG on nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation and microbiology of beef cattle. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of the increasing levels of de-oiled WDG replacing soybean meal and corn on dry matter (DM) intake, total tract digestibility, ruminal short chain fatty acids and microbiology. Eight ruminally cannulated Nellore bulls (BW = 453 ± 32 kg) were allocated on individual pens and distributed in 4 treatments with 0, 150, 300 and 450 g de-oiled WDG/kg DM in a 4 × 4 replicated Latin square design. The experimental period lasted 112 days, divided into 4 periods of 28 days (14 days of adaptation plus 14 days of sampling). The DM, organic matter and ether extract intake increased quadratically (P < 0.05), and were greater in animals fed 300 g/kg WDG. Intake and digestibility of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber increased, however, intake and digestibility of non-fiber carbohydrates decreased linearly (P < 0.05) with increasing levels of de-oiled WDG.Gross energy (GE) and digestible energy (DE) intake were quadratically affected by the treatments, whereby animals fed 300 g/kg WDG in the diet showed greater (P < 0.05) GE and DE intake. Moreover, propionate and butyrate concentration increased linearly (P < 0.05) in animals fed de-oiled WDG, which could be associated to greater (P < 0.10) relative abundance of Selonomonas ruminantium , resulting in higher ruminal pH in these animals. Therefore, the inclusion of de-oiled WDG might be used as replacement of soybean meal and ground corn in high concentrate diets of Nellore cattle without compromising ruminal fermentation and nutrient digestibility. • The Canchim breed is an alternative for crossbreeding with Bos indicus animals. • Feeding behavior among genetic groups in the Pantanal biome was the same. • The feedlot of crossbred animals in the Pantanal biome is viable. • All meat color variables were higher in Angus x Nelore crossbred animals. The objective of this work was to evaluate cattle from different genetic groups finished in a feedlot and subject to the climatic conditions of the Upper Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, according to the behavior, carcass performance and characteristics, and quality of fresh or aged meat. Eight animals from each genetic group were confined for 84 days, including: Nelore (NEL), Aberdeen Angus x Nelore (AAN) and Canchim x Nelore (CAN). The animals were slaughtered using the cerebral concussion technique and cutting of the jugular vein, followed by removal of the hide and evisceration. The data was analyzed in a completely randomized design using PROC GLM, with the means compared by the Tukey test at 5% significance. For the behavioral parameters there was no effect of breed (P > 0.05). There was a negative correlation (P <.0001) between Temperature and Humidity Index (THI) and water consumption, urination and defecation. Values of total and daily weight gain and feed efficiency were lower (P < 0.05) for NEL animals, with no difference between the AAN and CAN crossbreeds. The THI presented a negative correlation with the average daily gain and the total weight gain (P < 0.05). For the carcass variables, such as slaughter weight, hot carcass weight and carcass length, the AAN animals showed higher values (P < 0.05) than the other genetic groups. The qualitative variables evaluated did not present an interaction effect (P > 0.05). The tenderness parameters (shear force and myofibrillar fragmentation index) were lower and higher (P < 0.05), respectively, for the Aberdeen Angus crossbreed animals. It was concluded that the introduction of Taurine genes in the crossbreeds of Nelore animals is an excellent alternative for feedlot termination in the Pantanal conditions, since the behavior was not influenced by the climatic condition and the performance was superior for the AAN and CAN crossbreed animals. The research aim was to evaluate the genotype-environment interactions (GxE) through a study of the reaction norms of Nellore cattle raised in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil at the age at first calving (AFC), with scrotal circumference at 365 and 450 days of age (SC365 and SC450), gestation length (GL) and accumulated productivity (ACP). Bayes hierarchical models with defined parameters at structured levels or stages were used. The Markov chain Monte Carlo method was used to obtain genetic parameter estimates. The environmental gradient of each trait was defined using a 99% credibility interval of the contemporary group's solutions. The animal model showed a better fit for AFC data, and the two-step reaction norms model was the best for the other characteristics. Heritabilities were 0.21 ± 0.01 for AFC; and ranged from 0.27 ± 0.04 to 0.58 ± 0.02, 0.26 ± 0.05 to 0.57 ± 0.02, 81 ± 0.03 to 0.03 ± 0.02, 0.05 ± 0.02 to 0.86 ± 0.03 along the environmental gradient for SC365, SC450, GL and ACP, respectively. Correlations between intercept and slope of the reaction norms allied with reaction norms graphic plots of the ten sires with the greatest number of calves suggest the presence of GxE complex for SC365 and SC450, and GxE scale effect for GL and ACP. However, high correlations between the environments indicate that the GxE for SC450 and ACP is of a low magnitude and its inclusion in genetic evaluations would not influence the population selection. The purpose of this study was to understand and discuss the relationships of the thermal environment, morphophysiological response, performance, and carcass traits of Brahman bulls from weaning at 18 months exposed to grazing conditions based on the physiological and evolutionary rationale behind the different proposals for the thermal adaptation of zebu cattle. Fifty-three uncastrated and clinically healthy bulls with birth and weaning weight of 34.0 ± 3.32 kg and 215.5 ± 44.75 kg, respectively, were evaluated. Fifteen canonical correlations were estimated, but only six were significant: thermal environment × thermoregulatory responses (r c  = 0.4635; P = 0.0413); thermal environment × performance (r c  = 0.4338; P = 0.0218); thermoregulatory responses × performance (r c  = 0.5119; P = 0.0071); hair coat characteristics × performance (r c  = 0.4939; P = 0.0273); hormone × carcass traits (r c  = 0.5408; P = 0.0698); and performance × carcass traits (r c  = 0.9644; P < 0.0001). Thermal environment, thermoregulatory responses and hair coat morphology influence of 18.81%, 21.49% and 24.40%, respectively, were found in the performance. We also concluded that (i) rectal temperature (R T ) is a homoeothermic indicator; (ii) sweating rate (S R ) is an important heat dissipation mechanism to explain the adaptation of zebu animals in the tropics and is related to weight at 550 days (W 550 ); (iii) coat morphology, especially length (H L ), diameter (H D ) and hair density (N D ) are related to animal performance; and (iv) hormonal profile, mainly T 4 , influences the carcass traits (yield, weight, subcutaneous fat and marble meat)., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of gene expression, potentially affecting several biological processes, whose function can be altered by sequence variation. Hence, the integration of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and miRNAs can explain individual differences in economic traits. To provide new insights into the effects of SNPs on miRNAs and their related target genes, we carried out a multi-omic analysis to identify SNPs in miRNA mature sequences (miR-SNPs) associated with fatty acid (FA) composition in the Nelore cattle. As a result, we identified 3 miR-SNPs in different miRNAs (bta-miR-2419-3p, bta-miR-193a-2, and bta-miR-1291) significantly associated with FA traits ( p -value < 0.02, Bonferroni corrected). Among these, the rs110817643C>T, located in the seed sequence of the bta-miR-1291, was associated with different ω6 FAs, polyunsaturated FA, and polyunsaturated:saturated FA ratios. Concerning the other two miR-SNPs, the rs43400521T>C (located in the bta-miR-2419-3p) was associated with C12:0 and C18:1 cis-11 FA, whereas the rs516857374A>G (located in the bta-miR-193a-2) was associated with C18:3 ω6 and ratio of ω6/ω3 traits. Additionally, to identify potential biomarkers for FA composition, we described target genes affected by these miR-SNPs at the mRNA or protein level. Our multi-omics analysis outlines the effects of genetic polymorphism on miRNA, and it highlights miR-SNPs and target candidate genes that control beef fatty acid composition.

Increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from anthropogenic activities have contributed to global warming and consequently to climate change. Among all sources of emissions, the agricultural sector accounts for just under a quarter, mainly because of the intensification of food production systems necessary to supply the growing demand of the population. As ruminal fermentation is the largest source of methane emission in the livestock industry, emission by cattle has become the focus of studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate enteric methane emission and emission intensities of Nellore cattle at different ages submitted to levels of intensification of the grazing system. Twenty-four animals per cycle (age of 21.8 and 13.1 mo in cycles 1 and 2, respectively) were randomly distributed across different grazing systems: irrigated pasture with a high stocking rate (IHS), dryland pasture with a high stocking rate (DHS), recovering dryland pasture with a moderate stocking rate (DMS), and degraded pasture with a low stocking rate (DP). Methane emission was measured using the sulfur hexafluoride technique in each season of the cycle. Intensive systems provided higher yields of good-quality forage as well as superior animal performance when compared with DP. Methane yields were different between seasons and cycles. Methane emissions per average daily weight gain and dry matter digestible intake were different between treatments. Differences in the results were observed when they were analyzed per hectare, with the highest gain yield (P = 0.0134), stocking rate, weight gain, carcass production, and total methane emission (P < 0.0001) being found for the intensive systems. There were no differences in emissions per weight gain or carcass production between production systems, while a difference was observed between cycles (P = 0.0189 and P = 0.0255, respectively), resulting in lower emission intensities for younger animals. We conclude that more intensive systems resulted in a higher kilograms production of carcass per hectare; however, animals at 19 mo of age raised in the IHS and DMS systems had a lower emission intensity in kilogram of CO2-eq. per kilogram of carcass. Moderate intensification (DMS) using animals at about 19 mo of age might be an effective strategy to mitigate GHG emissions from Brazilian tropical pastures. Heat stress is one of the most important factors that affect the performance of some Bos taurus breeds and crosses in tropical regions. The Brahman breed was developed in hot regions of the world and often has genes that confer resistance to heat stress compared to other breeds of beef cattle. The goal of this work was to evaluate the adaptive responses of Brahman bulls, based on physiological, hormonal and hair characteristics according to season. The physiological, hormonal and hair characteristics were rectal temperature (R T ), respiratory rate (R R ), sweating rate (S R ), triiodothyronine (T 3 ), thyroxine (T 4 ), cortisol concentrations (C O ), coat thickness (C T ), hair length (H L ), hair diameter (H D ) and hair density (N D ). These were recorded in Brahman bulls from a Cerrado biome during four seasons: spring (21 September to 20 December), summer (21 December to 17 March), autumn (18 March to 20 June) and winter (21 June to 20 September). Data was analyzed using a general linear model that included season as a fixed effect; in addition, multivariate tests and logistic regression were also used to characterize the animals within each season. The meteorological variables defined the four seasons, besides identifying climatic differences between them. Significant differences (P > 0.05) were found for most of the physiological, hormonal and hair characteristics according to season. The Brahman bulls presented particular adaptive characteristics in each season. Individually, most of the Brahman bulls presented the same adaptive reaction in each season; particular similarity occurred for the summer and autumn. The objective of this study was to compare SNP-BLUP, BayesCπ, BayesC and Bayesian Lasso methodologies to predict the direct genomic value for saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acid profile, omega 3 and 6 in the Longissimus thoracis muscle of Nellore cattle finished in feedlot. A total of 963 Nellore bulls with phenotype for fatty acid profiles, were genotyped using the Illumina BovineHD BeadChip (Illumina, San Diego, CA) with 777,962 SNP. The predictive ability was evaluated using cross validation. To compare the methodologies, the correlation between DGV and pseudo-phenotypes was calculated. The accuracy varied from -0.40 to 0.62. Our results indicate that none of the methods excelled in terms of accuracy, however, the SNP-BLUP method allows obtaining less biased genomic evaluations, thereby; this method is more feasible when taking into account the analyses' operating cost. Despite the lowest bias observed for EBV, the adjusted phenotype is the preferred pseudophenotype considering the genomic prediction accuracies regarding the context of the present study., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors. The aims of our study were to estimate genetic parameters for body weight and visual scores and to evaluate their inclusion as selection criteria in the Nelore breeding program in Brazil. The traits studied were the body weight adjusted to 210 (W210) and to 450 (W450) days of age and visual scores for body structure, finishing precocity, and muscling evaluated at weaning (BS W , FP W , and MS W ) and yearling (BS Y , FP Y , and MS Y ) ages. A total of 33,242, 26,259, 23,075, and 26,057 observations were considered to analyze W210, W450, and visual scores at weaning and yearling. The significant (P < 0.05) fixed effects for all traits were farm, birth season, birth year, sex, and management group. Single-trait analyses were performed to define the most fitting model to our data using the average information restricted maximum likelihood algorithm, for weaning traits. Subsequently, these models were used in single- and two-trait analyses considering the Bayesian inference algorithm. Two-trait Bayesian analyses resulted in average direct heritability estimates for BS W , FP W , MS W , W210, BS Y , FP Y , MS Y , and W450 of 0.28, 0.30, 0.27, 0.28, 0.40, 0.44, 0.39, and 0.50, respectively. Genetic correlations varied from 0.40 to 0.96. Benefits to animal performance can best be achieved by considering body structure, finishing precocity, and muscling as selection criteria in the Nelore breeding programs. The decision to use visual scores measured at weaning should be considered in order to decrease generation interval and assist pre-selecting individuals, expecting carcass improvements in the future progeny.

This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of category (heifers, primiparous or multiparous cows) on pregnancy rates in a large scale resynchronization ovulation program. Nelore heifers (n = 903), primiparous lactating cows (n = 338) and multiparous lactating cows (n = 1,223) were synchronized using a conventional protocol of estradiol/P4-based fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI). Thirty days after ultrasonography, females who failed the first FTAI were resynchronized with the same hormonal protocol prior to a second FTAI. The pregnancy status of each cohort was evaluated by ultrasonography 30 days after each FTAI. The average conception rate after the first FTAI and resynchronization was 80.5%. Heifers had a higher conception rate (85%) than primiparous (76%) or multiparous cows (78%; p = 0.0001). The conception rate after the first FTAI was similar among heifers (57%), primiparous cows (51%) and multiparous cows (56%; p = 0.193). After the second FTAI, heifers exhibited a higher conception rate (66%) than primiparous or multiparous cows (51%; p = 0.0001). These results demonstrate the feasibility of resynchronization in large beef herds for providing consistent pregnancy rates in a short period of time. We also demonstrated that ovulation resynchronization 30 days after FTAI is particularly effective for heifers, providing a conception rate of up to 66%.

Brazilian Nellore cattle (Bos indicus) have been selected for growth traits for over more than four decades. In recent years, reproductive and meat quality traits have become more important because of increasing consumption, exports and consumer demand. The identification of genome regions altered by artificial selection can potentially permit a better understanding of the biology of specific phenotypes that are useful for the development of tools designed to increase selection efficiency. Therefore, the aims of this study were to detect evidence of recent selection signatures in Nellore cattle using extended haplotype homozygosity methodology and BovineHD marker genotypes (>777,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms) as well as to identify corresponding genes underlying these signals. Thirty-one significant regions (P < 0.0001) of possible recent selection signatures were detected, and 19 of these overlapped quantitative trait loci related to reproductive traits, growth, feed efficiency, meat quality, fatty acid profiles and immunity. In addition, 545 genes were identified in regions harboring selection signatures. Within this group, 58 genes were associated with growth, muscle and adipose tissue metabolism, reproductive traits or the immune system. Using relative extended haplotype homozygosity to analyze high-density single nucleotide polymorphism marker data allowed for the identification of regions potentially under artificial selection pressure in the Nellore genome, which might be used to better understand autozygosity and the effects of selection on the Nellore genome., (© 2014 Stichting International Foundation for Animal Genetics.)

Data from 156 Nellore males were used to develop equations for the prediction of retail beef yield and carcass fat content, expressed as kilograms and as a percentage, from live animal and carcass measurements. Longissimus muscle area and backfat and rump fat thickness were measured by ultrasound up to 5 d before slaughter and fasted live weight was determined 1 d before slaughter. The same traits were obtained after slaughter. The carcass edible portion (CEP in kg and CEP% in percentage; n = 116) was calculated by the sum of the edible portions of primal cuts: hindquarter, forequarter, and spare ribs. Trimmable fat from the carcass boning process, with the standardization of about 3 mm of fat on retail beef, was considered to be representative of carcass fat content. Most of the variation in CEP was explained by fasted live weight or carcass weight (R(2) of 0.92 and 0.96); the same occurred for CEP% (R(2) of 0.15 and 0.13), and for CEP, the inclusion of LM area and fat thickness reduced the equation bias (lower value of Mallow's Cp statistics). For trimmable fat, most variation could be explained by weight or rump fat thickness. In general, the equations developed from live animal measurements showed a predictive power similar to the equations using carcass measurements. In all cases, the traits expressed as kilograms were better predicted (R(2) of 0.39 to 0.96) than traits expressed as a percentage (R(2) of 0.08 to 0.42).
