Considering that reports of violence against women must come after a victim seeks help, the subject matter transcends health-related issues. In Brazil, mobile urgency services (SAMU/SIATE) frequently provide first aid to these women and, to the best of our knowledge, no other research has specifically examined the first reaction given to these women. The present study aimed to analyze SAMU/SIATE assistance to abused women in a cross-sectional study of the assistance to assaulted women provided by SIATE and SAMU Maringá/Norte Novo between 2011 and 2020. Women between 20 and 39 years old, non-pregnant, were the main victims, and 19.52% of them have used drugs of some kind. The (ex) partner figured as the perpetrator in 17.35%, but there was no information about this variable in 73.75% of the records. The Chi-square test shows a mortality rate superior to 70% among the severely traumatized victims. This is the first research work to examine the kind of care that SAMU/SIATE offers, and it identifies several weaknesses in its " modus operandi " that may prevent the results from being applied to larger contexts. In addition, further studies on mobile urgent care services in other provinces are required in order to suggest ways to lessen this epidemic.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of domestic violence in adolescent and adult mothers who were admitted to obstetrics services centers in Brazil and to identify risk factors of domestic violence and any adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes. Researchers used standardized interviews, the questionnaire Abuse Assessment Screen, and a review of patients' medical records. Descriptive statistical analyses were also used. The prevalence of domestic violence among all participants totaled 40.1% (38.5% of adolescents, 41.7% of adults). Factors associated with domestic violence during pregnancy were as follows: a history of family violence, a greater number of sexual partners, and being a smoker. No statistically significant association was found for adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes. Results showed that, in Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, pregnancy did not protect a woman from suffering domestic violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: to analyze the representations about domestic violence against women, among health professionals of Family Health Units. Method: qualitative study based on the Theory of Social Representations. Data were collected by means of evocations and interviews, treating them in the Ensemble de Programmes Pemettant L'Analyse des Evocations software - EVOC and content analysis. Results: nurses, physicians, nursing technicians and community health agents participated. The evocations were answered by 201 professionals and, of these, 64 were interviewed. The central core of this representation, comprised by the terms "aggression", "physical-aggression", "cowardice" and "lack of respect", which have negative connotations and were cited by interviewees. In the contrast zone, comprised by the terms "abuse", "abuse-power", "pain", "humiliation", "impunity", "suffering", "sadness" and "violence", two subgroups were identified. The first periphery contains the terms "fear", evoked most often, followed by "revolt", "low self-esteem" and "submission", and in the second periphery "acceptance" and "professional support". Conclusion: this is a structured representation since it contains conceptual, imagetic and attitudinal elements. The subgroups were comprised by professionals working in the rural area and by those who had completed their professional training course in or after 2004. These presented a representation of violence different from the representation of the general group, although all demonstrated a negative connotation of this phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To identify and compare the structure and content of representations of domestic violence against women among students in the initial and final grades of a nursing undergraduate course., Methods: A qualitative study was carried out between August/November 2014, in Rio Grande/RS, with 132 nursing students, 71 of the initial grades and 61 of the final grades. The data has been collected through evocations and interviews; for the treatment, the EVOC software and content analysis have been used. Approval under Opinion 109/2014., Results: In common in the central nucleus are the terms violence, cowardice, disrespect and pain. The first group evoked sadness and the second, physical violence., Conclusion: The representation has negative connotations, with discrete differentiation. The students of the final series are based on the reified knowledge and have the structured representation, with concept, image and attitude. It is hoped that the students will contribute to the prevention, identification and intervention of victims of violence.

This study investigated the association between unintended pregnancy and intimate partner violence before pregnancy. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 1,054 women, aged 18 to 49, in Recife, Northeastern Brazil, from July 2005 to March 2006. Non-conditional logistic regression analysis was performed with a hierarchical strategy for entering variables into the model, according to the conceptual framework defined. Unintended pregnancy was reported by 60.3% (636) women. Intimate partner violence prior to the pregnancy was associated with unintended pregnancy (OR adj = 1.57; 95%CI: 1.17-2.11), even when adjusted for the women's sociodemographic characteristics, the partner's behaviour, and the relationship dynamic. When the association was adjusted for the use of contraception and the partner's refusal to use contraception, the association was no longer significant, suggesting that the effect of partner violence on unintended pregnancy may be mediated by these variables. The findings point to the need of screening for intimate partner violence in reproductive health services.

This study deals with violence against women as a health care matter. It was part of a research in public services of São Paulo (Brazil), including the prevalence of violence among users from 15 to 49 years old; the study of their medical records; the description of the services; and interview with 50 professionals, focusing the routine and the ideals of health work, the perception on the existence of violence cases, the offer of assistance or its obstacles and the representations on violence. This article analyses the content of the professional narratives and uses the other data to characterise the assistance context. Confirming the literature, violence was almost always regarded as a relevant problem but outside the professional's intervention boundaries. Isolated actions and in a personal basis were reported. Fear and professional impotence were mentioned, but none positive aspect for potential interventions. The professionals showed lack of knowledge of specialized reference services. In conclusion, the difficulties in the acceptance of violence cases should be worked in three dimensions: the narrow definition of professionals' competence that excludes violence as an object; the absence of technological definitions for professional actions; and effective support in their services.

The aim of this study was to characterize the nursing care, provided to women who suffered sexual violence, treated at The Women's Hospital-CAISM/UNICAMP. A retrospective, descriptive study performed using 146 nursing care records of women attended from June 2006 to May 2007. The results showed that the majority of attendances occurred during the day period, that there was consistency between the interventions and the nursing diagnoses identified, and that women reported having received guidance in accordance with the protocol of the program. The nursing consultation time was greater at night (p=0.0227) and the women frequently understood the health risks resulting from sexual violence (p=0.0072), the use of antiretrovirals according to their daily activities (p=0.0397) and they were more focused on the purpose of the serology (p=0.0351). We concluded that the care provided was shown to be appropriate and of a better quality in the nightshift period.

Objective: To comprehend the perception of health professionals regarding physical violence against women by an intimate partner., Methodological Procedures: This is a qualitative study performed in 2006 on 30 health professionals from three National Health System units in the city of Natal, Northeastern Brazil. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on three thematic topics: ideas associated to physical violence suffered by women; action of the health professional; and the role of health services. The series of interviews included questions on the perception of professionals about gender relations, physical violence, action as a health professional, and the role of health services. Categories were formed from these topics using the thematic content analysis., Results: Health professionals pointed several factors that influence domestic violence situations, among which are machismo, poor economic conditions, alcoholism, and previous experiences of violence in the family environment. The study group reported they did not feel qualified to discuss the subject with the population and stressed the need that health services promote educational activities with this aim., Conclusions: The results suggest the need for systematized and effective actions aimed at humanizing health care for the battered woman.

Domestic violence perpetrated against women by their live-in partners may be rated as a public health problem. Knowledge of battered women's profiles helps shape specific actions that curtail this type of aggression. This paper examines the links between violence groups, and the socio-demographic status of aggressors and their victims, using the Multiple Correspondence analysis technique in order to profile the women helped by the Integrated Women's Assistance Center (CIAM). The findings showed different profiles for women assaulted by their partners in terms of the severity of the violence. Victims with severe sexually-related injuries were associated with incomplete high school educations and more than three workers resident in the home. Victims with serious physical and psychological injuries were related to university educations and graduate studies, declared as heads of families. Victims with minor physical and psychological injuries were related to relationships lasting less than five years, with high school diplomas for the women and younger aggressors, employed, and with up to three workers resident in the home.

This forum focuses on the health sector's response to sexual violence against women, analyzing the policies formulated by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and the protocol in two academic health centers. The premise is that an approach to sexual violence requires the discussion of women's autonomy in relation to their bodies and thus their right to abortion. This intrinsic link between sexual violence and morally and politically loaded issues has contributed to the relatively slow response by the public health sector in Brazil. However, the pioneering experience of two academic health centers in treating rape victims demonstrates the importance of these issues in the training of health professionals and the need to guarantee women's expanded and ongoing access to these services.

Objective: To assess whether gestational weight gain (GWG) during pregnancy is linked to intimate partner violence (IPV)., Methods: A total of 394 women being delivered at term at Rio de Janeiro public maternities from March to October 2000 were randomly selected. The Revised Conflict Tactics Scales were used to assess IPV and GWG was expressed through the Net Weight Gain (NWG) indicator. Multiple linear regression was used to control for socioeconomic, demographic, reproductive, and nutritional confounding factors, as well as lifestyle factors such as alcohol, drug, and tobacco consumption., Results: Even after adjustment, increased physical abuse from male partners was statistically associated with lesser weight gain during pregnancy. Compared with women unexposed to IPV, those with the highest physical abuse score showed deficits of 3245 g and 3959 g, respectively, according to 2 models that did and did not control for lifestyles factors., Conclusion: Physical violence between intimate partners constitutes an independent risk factor for GWG deficit during pregnancy.

An outline and critical analysis of scientific studies on Violence and Health is presented. On the basis of a non-exhaustive review, the construction of violence as a national and international field of knowledge and intervention is broached. Outbreaks of violence are shown to occupy a broad domain of social life that reaches practically everyone, in situations of both war and supposed peace. The unity of violence as an ethical-political question is highlighted and its extreme diversity as concrete situations for study and intervention is demonstrated. Through situating violence as related to collective, interpersonal and self-reported individual dimensions, and taking it to be intentional acts of physical force or power, resulting in physical, sexual or psychological abuse, and in negligence or deprivation, the studies examined mostly demonstrate a concern to respond to the widespread sense that violence is invisible, naturalized and inevitable. In order to do it, the studies show the high magnitude of violence, and the possibilities for controlling violence and attending to the multiplicity of harm to health. The initial approaches flow from a theoretical-methodological point of view related to social inequalities, family maladjustment, gender inequalities and, less frequently, race or ethnic inequalities. These imply reconstruction of the classical concepts of family, generation and social class. In conclusion, this problem is considered to be interdisciplinary and, returning to the notion of social-medical matters within Social Medicine, updating of this notion is recommended for topics that are as complex and sensitive as violence.

It is a report on an experience - a volunteer apprenticeship carried out at Viva Maria Passage Home located in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This study aimed at learning about the domestic violence issue, identifying the role of the health professionals in the care to women who are victims of violence and performing activities with the dwellers and their children. Such activities comprised workshops on health education. The clientele involved women and their children who lived in the passage home between August and December 2001. The mentioned experience evidences the possibility of breaking up the violence chain that links people who is submitted to it.

This article discusses the roles of social workers, psychologists, nurses, and physicians concerning abortion and their participation in assisting legal abortion in Brazil for women victims of sexual violence. The working hypothesis was that many health professionals might oppose such programs on the grounds that they involve interruption of pregnancy. This qualitative study interviewed 12 health professionals and two program managers in the State of Paraíba and the Federal District (Brasilia). The health professionals' representations of abortion ranged from a moralist and religious concept to the promotion of women's rights and autonomy. The health professionals faced obvious challenges in dealing with the abortion issue. Their experience in treating women had fostered changes in values and a reinterpretation of the meaning of their own practice.

Describes a counseling and support intervention in primary health care which is being piloted in a health center in São Paulo, Brazil. The available literature reflects the growing interest in gender violence and reproductive health. Violence is generally studied by identifying pathologies, measuring their demands on services and evaluating their repercussions on fetal outcome. Institutional violence, however, has received little attention and is mainly concerned with the consequences of inappropriate use of technologies. Data from the Sexuality and Health Feminist Collective shows that among patients, 20.5% stated that they have never talked about their sexual life with their partners; 38.3% stated that they have had sexual intercourse against their will, including situations ranging from sexual harassment to rape which was referred by 12.3% of them. One of the most relevant issues arising from the anamnesis and interviews of these women was the violence to which they were submitted by health services. The high prevalence of violent situations indicates the urgency of incorporating an approach which deals with gender violence and promotes the empowerment of women into the routine of reproductive health services.
