Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is associated with greater risk of morbimortality and it has high prevalence in people with mental illness., Objective: Estimate the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) and its associated factors in the patients of a Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS in Brazilian Portuguese) in the city of Salvador, state of Bahia, Brazil., Method: Cross-sectional study set at CAPS in the city of Salvador-Bahia between August 2019 and February 2020. MS was evaluated according to the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III. In addition to descriptive statistics, gross and adjusted prevalence ratios were described., Results: MS was found in 100 (35.2%) individuals, 116 (40.9%) were obese and 165 (58.1%) had increased waist circumference. Polypharmacy was identified in 63 (22.3%) patients and 243 (85.9%) used antipsychotics. Under gross evaluation, women (PR = 1.88; 95%CI: 1.35-2.63) and those who used antidepressants (PR = 1.41; 95%CI: 1.05-1.88) showed an association with MS. After logistic regression, depression (PR = 1.86; 95%CI: 1.38-2.51), acanthosis (PR = 1.50; 95%CI: 1.18-1.90), use of antipsychotics (PR = 1.88; 95%CI: 1.13-2.75), and hypertriglyceridemic waist (PR = 3.33; 95%CI: 2.48-4.46) were associated with MS., Conclusion: The prevalence of MS signals multimorbidity among individuals with mental disorders and suggests a need for clinical screening.

Four new chromenones, kielmeyerones A-D ( 1 - 4 ), were obtained from the roots of Kielmeyera reticulata . Their structures were elucidated based on spectroscopic data (NMR and HRESIMS) interpretation. The pharmacological activity of kielmeyerone A ( 1 ), the major compound, was evaluated using in vitro and in vivo inflammation and pain models. During in vitro screening, 1 , at noncytotoxic concentrations (0.097-1.56 μM), inhibited NO production by J774 macrophages stimulated with LPS and IFN-γ. In the complete Freund's adjuvant-induced inflammation model in mice, 1 (12.5-50 mg/kg) inhibited paw edema, demonstrating an anti-inflammatory effect. Additionally, 1 (12.5-50 mg/kg) induced a dose-dependent antinociceptive effect in the late phase of the formalin test, a profile similar to those of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Mice treated with 1 (100 mg/kg) did not show motor performance alterations using a rota-rod test. Thus, the present study has characterized new chromenones from Kielmeyera reticulata and has provided evidence of the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties of one of these, kielmeyerone A ( 1 ).

Most freshwater species of Cymothoidae are distributed in South America. They have mainly been recorded in the eastern and western regions of the Amazon River basin. However, in this ecosystem, the biodiversity of this group may be greater if the entire Amazon basin is considered. In this regard, the aim of the present study was to provide an updated list of isopod species of the family Cymothoidae that are found in fish in the Brazilian Amazon region and to report on new fish host occurrences and expanded geographical distributions for cymothoid isopods that parasitize fish in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon region. The parasites found in fish specimens were collected, fixed and identified later. We found eight species of Cymothoidae parasitizing different host fish species in the southwestern Amazon region. However, we found 14 species of Cymothoidae throughout the Brazilian Amazon region. Three additional species are thus reported here, which increases the number of species of Cymothoidae in this region to 17. These additional species are also new records for Brazil. Therefore, this study has contribute to expand the knowledge about the distribution and diversity of Cymothoidae in the Amazon basin.

Background and Aims: Obesity is a pandemic affecting approximately 700 million adults worldwide, with an additional 2 billion overweight. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally invasive endoscopic bariatric therapy that involves remodeling of the greater curvature in an effort to reduce gastric capacity and delay gastric emptying. A variety of ESG suture patterns has been reported. This study is the first to use a uniform "U" stitch pattern across all centers to simplify technical aspects of the procedure and limit cost. This also uniquely assessed outcomes in all body mass index (BMI) categories and changes in metabolic rate, lean body mass, and adipose tissue composition., Methods: This is a multicenter analysis of prospectively collected data from 7 centers including patients with overweight and obesity who underwent ESG. Primary outcomes included absolute weight loss, percent total body weight loss (%TWL), change in BMI, and percent excess weight loss (%EWL) at 6 and 12 months in overweight and obese classes I, II, and III. Secondary outcomes included adipose tissue, lean body mass reduction, and metabolic rate analyzed by bioimpedance. Additionally, immediate or delayed adverse events (AEs) were analyzed. Clinical success was defined as achieving ≥25% EWL at 1 year with ≤5% serious AE (SAE) rate following the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE)/American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) threshold., Results: A total of 193 patients underwent ESG during the study period. All groups had >10% TWL and >25% EWL at 6 months of follow-up. On average, %TWL was 14.25% ± 5.26% and 15.06% ± 5.22% and the %EWL 56.15% ± 22.93% and 59.41% ± 25.69% at 6 months and 1 year of follow-up, respectively. %TWL was 8.91% ± .3%, 13.92% ± 5.76%, 16.22% ± 7.69%, and 19.01% ± .95% and %EWL 56.21% ± 2.0%, 62.03% ± 27.63%, 54.13% ± 23.46%, and 46.78% ± 2.43% for overweight and obesity classes I, II, and III, respectively, at 1 year. Male sex, age <41 years, and higher BMI were predictors of achieving a TWL ≥10% at 1-year follow-up. There was a significant reduction in adipose tissue from baseline. SAEs occurred in 1.03%, including 2 perigastric collections needing surgery., Conclusions: ESG appears to be feasible, safe, and effective in the treatment of patients with overweight and obesity according to ASGE/ASMBS thresholds., (Copyright © 2019 American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. In November 2015, the largest socio-environmental disaster in the history of Brazil occurred when approximately 50 million m 3 of mine tailings were released into the Doce River (SE Brazil), during the greatest failure of a tailings dam worldwide. The mine tailings passed through the Doce River basin, reaching the ecologically important estuary 17 days later. On the arrival of the mine wastes to the coastal area, contamination levels in the estuarine soils were measured to determine the baseline level of contamination and to enable an environmental risk assessment. Soil and tailings samples were collected and analyzed to determine the redox potential (Eh), pH, grain size and mineralogical composition, total metal contents (Fe, Mn, Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb and Co) and organic matter content. The metals were fractionated to elucidate the mechanisms governing the trace metal dynamics. The mine tailings are mostly composed of Fe (mean values for Fe: 45,200 ± 2850; Mn: 433 ± 110; Cr: 63.9 ± 15.1; Zn: 62.4 ± 28.4; Ni: 24.7 ± 10.4; Cu: 21.3 ± 4.6; Pb: 20.2 ± 4.6 and Co: 10.7 ± 4.8 mg kg -1 ), consisting of Fe-oxyhydroxides (goethite, hematite); kaolinite and quartz. The metal contents of the estuarine soils, especially the surface layers, indicate trace metal enrichment caused by the tailings. However, the metal contents were below threshold levels reported in Brazilian environmental legislation. Despite the fact that only a small fraction (<2%) of the metals identified are readily bioavailable (i.e. soluble and exchangeable fraction), trace metals associated with Fe oxyhydroxides contributed between 69.8 and 87.6% of the total contents. Control of the trace metal dynamics by Fe oxyhydroxides can be ephemeral, especially in wetland soils in which the redox conditions oscillate widely. Indeed, the physicochemical conditions (Eh < 100 mV and circumneutral pH) of estuarine soils favor Fe reduction microbial pathways, which will probably increase the trace metal bioavailability and contamination risk., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. This population-based study focused on the validity of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for screening major depressive episodes in the general population in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Households were selected by multi-stage sampling, and adults (> 20 years) were invited to participate. The gold standard was the structured diagnostic Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), applied by psychiatrists and psychologists. Both the PHQ-9 and the MINI were applied in the subjects' homes. In a total of 447 participants (191 men and 256 women), the continuous analysis identified > 9 as the cutoff point with the highest sensitivity (77.5%; 61.5-89.2) and specificity (86.7%; 83.0- 89.9). Use of the test's algorithm decreased the sensitivity to 42.5% (27.0-59.1), while the specificity increased to 95.3% (92.8-97.2). The PHQ-9 proved appropriate for screening major depressive episodes. For greater sensitivity, the continuously scored PHQ-9 proved more adequate than the algorithm for screening major depressive episodes in the community.
