The loss of species with unique traits and evolutionary histories resulting from anthropogenic land-use changes poses a risk to the maintenance of ecosystems. We investigated the influence of Pinus monocultures and roads on functional, phylogenetic, and taxonomic composition, as well as on functional dispersion of an anuran metacommunity in Brazil. We expected the influence of anthropogenic stressors to (1) vary according to the diversity component, with greater influence on the functional and phylogenetic components than on the taxonomic component; and (2) traits related to habitat exploration to be more influenced by monocultures, while the traits related to dispersal and physiological control to be influenced by roads and monocultures, especially for species with smaller body size and low dispersal potential. We found that, while the distance from ponds to monocultures influences the phylogenetic composition, distance to roads influences functional composition and dispersion. The anthropogenic stressors affect the structure of these communities, even those formed by generalist species in terms of habitat use. The phylogenetic composition shows that the distribution of evolutionary clades in human-modified areas is linked to the preferred habitat of species, while functional composition is related to body size. Furthermore, functional dispersion was higher in areas closer to roads, contrary to our expectations. Our results represent new evidence for the conservation of anurans in modified landscapes reinforcing the importance of including functional and phylogenetic information in conservation-driven studies. Wetlands are periodically flooded terrestrial and aquatic environments, which provide benefits to a community known as ecosystem services (ESs). This research identified, classified, and spatialized the level of relevance of ecosystem services provided by wetlands in the Galinhos-Guamaré semi-arid estuarine system, State of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast Brazil. ESs were analyzed using the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES), v.4.3, and geographic information system (GIS) using a mosaic of Sentinel-2A images. The services provided by wetlands were classified into provision, regulation and maintenance, and cultural sections, with six divisions, 12 groups, and 22 classes being identified. The capacity of a number of wetlands to provide services was identified in 34 mangrove forests, 32 estuaries, 30 tidal flats, 26 solar saltworks, 23 apicum (tidal flats), and seven in shrimp ponds. However, it is noteworthy that these habitats are associated with ecosystems with great ecological, socioeconomic, and cultural importance, where the general approach presented here requires more detailed research in each macrohabitat, which should be considered as a priority for conservation. Both N deposition and changes in precipitation amount are important components of global change and affect aquatic ecosystem functioning by altering the detrital quality and detrital processing rates by macroinvertebrates and microorganisms. Changes in precipitation pattern can also modify the physical structure of the ecosystem, determining habitat availability for aquatic organisms. Although these drivers can individually affect ecosystem structure and functioning, their interactive effects are poorly understood.To better understand the combined effects of detritus quality and precipitation regime on the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems we manipulated litter quality, by modifying N:P stoichiometry and rainfall amount on tropical natural aquatic microcosms (water‐holding epiphytic bromeliads). We performed an orthogonal manipulation of litter N:P ratio (natural N:P and high N:P) and rainfall levels (current level and predicted 40% increase for south‐eastern Brazil)Changes in litter quality affected the abundance of the aquatic organisms inhabiting bromeliads, including algae and bacteria. However, changes in litter quality combined with changes in precipitation levels affected only one group of macroinvertebrates, the Naididae worms (Oligochaeta) an important group of detritivores in the bromeliad systems. These combined drivers also affected the decomposition of organic matter by changing coloured organic matter concentrations, fine particulate matter biomass, and NH4+ concentrations in bromeliad tanks. The NH4+ concentration in bromeliad water was positively related with Naididae abundance, suggesting that these worms can act as ecosystem engineers by boosting N cycling. In both N:P treatments we observed a 50% decrease in N flux from litter to bromeliad leaves due to increases in nutrient leaching from the tanks caused by rainfall.The combined effects of litter quality and changes in precipitation regimes altered the decomposition process and nutrient cycling in tank bromeliads, probably through changes in the abundance of some keystone species (e.g. Naididae). Aquatic macroinvertebrate community structure remained similar after manipulating precipitation, despite changes in the abundance of some species. Although some microorganisms were washed out of the system, their abundance inside the bromeliads remained stable. We conclude that the abundance of individuals belonging to aquatic communities in bromeliad phytotelmata are generally stable and resistant to changes in rainfall levels, but are sensitive to changes in litter quality.This experiment showed that the interactive effects of increased precipitation and N concentrations differed from the effects of either factor alone. As responses to changes in these factors were complex rather than additive, caution is required in predicting the outcomes of changes in both factors in freshwater ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sediments are formed by deposition of organic and inorganic particles on depth of water bodies, being an important role in aquatic ecosystems, including destination and potential source of essential nutrients and heavy metals, which may be toxic for living organisms. The Lake Guaíba supplies water for approximately two million people and it is located in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sediment pollution in the margins of Lake Guaíba in the vicinity of Porto Alegre city. Surface sediment was sampled in 12 sites to assess the concentration of several elements (C, N, P, Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Mn, Ba, Zn, V, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Cd, Mo, and Se) and the mineralogical composition. Sediment in margins of Lake Guaíba presented predominantly (> 95%) sandy fraction in all samples, but with significant differences between evaluated sites. Sediments in the margins of Lake Guaíba showed indications of punctual water pollution with Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, TOC, TKN, and P, mainly derived from urban streams that flow into the lake. In order to solve these environmental liabilities, public actions should not focus only on Guaíba, but also in the streams that flow into the lake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change is becoming an imminent reality, especially in arid and semiarid regions. Therefore, it is essential to understand the relationships between humans and aquatic ecosystems in order to devise efficient management and conservation strategies. We conducted 126 interviews using a semi-structured form to record water sources, transport strategies, and the use and treatment of water by communities surrounding four reservoirs within two drainage basins in the semiarid region of Brazil. These factors were then compared to the mean water volumes of the respective reservoirs from 2013 to 2015, a period of severe drought in that area. Seven types of water sources were considered, according to the perspectives of the interviewees: large reservoirs (dams) (43% of the citations), other smaller reservoirs (25%), rainwater (17.5%), wells (7%), waterholes (3%), bottled water (4%), and water tanks (0.5%). The water resources obtained are transported to human residences in seven different manners: actively pumped (34% of the citations), by water tanker truck (33%), distributed in pipes by local resident associations (11%), transport by animal (14%), human transport (4%), by car (2%), and by motorcycle (2%). The water is then used for domestic purposes (21%), for personal hygiene (20%), by animals (19%), in agriculture (18%), for cooking (10%), for fishing (7%), and for drinking (6%). A worrisome trend was that many local residents did not treat the water they were consuming. Climate change affects seasonal patterns of rainfall that will, in turn, determine the availability and quantities of water resources, provoking changes in the sources of water used by human populations, their strategies of access to that resource, and water-use patterns. Regular, robust monitoring programs set up to assess the environmental conditions of aquatic systems often target different biological groups. And, of these, macroinvertebrate communities and particularly the class Polychaeta are frequently used. Identifying these organisms takes time, money and specialized expertise to ensure correct identification to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Identification errors can lead to an erroneous assessment. The concept of taxonomic sufficiency has been proposed both to minimize errors and to save time and money. This study tested the usefulness of this concept in tropical estuaries in northeast Brazil. We selected two transitional systems with different degrees of human impact due to different land uses and different conservation systems: the Mamanguape estuary, which is in an environmental conservation unit for sustainable use, and the highly impacted, urban Paraíba do Norte estuary. The results clearly showed that nutrient concentrations were markedly higher in the Paraíba do Norte estuary in the dry season and that the composition of the polychaete assemblages differed between the two estuaries as well as along the spatial gradient of each estuary. The use of either genus or family level led to equivalent representation in each system in terms of taxon richness and both the Margalef and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices. Both taxonomic levels described similar changes in the polychaete assemblage along the estuarine gradients. Based on our findings, the use of a coarser taxonomic level (i.e., family) is a good option when the aim is to implement a monitoring program in tropical estuaries with the polychaete assemblages as one of the target groups. Studies of the genus Pinnularia Ehrenb. are only incipient in central-western Brazil, especially in Goiás. Only 20 of the 170 taxa known from Brazil were recorded in this state until now. A taxonomic study of Pinnularia from Lago dos Tigres (Tocantins-Araguaia River Basin) recorded 20 specific and infraspecific taxa, distributed in 17 species, including P. instabilis whose lectotype is designated here. Only P. meridiana var. meridiana was previously recorded in aquatic systems of the state. Eighteen taxa are newly recorded for Goiás, and one is the first record in Brazil. The Pinnularia flora from Lago dos Tigres contains nine taxa in common with the Amazon River Basin flora, and seven other taxa that occur elsewhere in the Paraná River Basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Civil construction has grown inadvertently in Brazil, and, consequently, its demands for raw material. The production of such materials, as to any industrial process, yields wastewater effluents and has as destination, in general, water resources such as rivers and lakes. Nonetheless, government inspection cannot keep up with the number of starting companies, resulting in impunity due to lack of inspection. In the present work, the first of the kind, some chemical-physics aspects of wastewater effluents samples generated from grout industries were analyzed. The study shows that the pH of these samples lie outside the established limit by the national laws. The extremely alkaline pH and high conductivity of these effluents may cause severe damage to the aquatic environment in which they are disposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increased incidence of solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) due to ozone depletion has been affecting both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and it may help to explain the enigmatic decline of amphibian populations in specific localities. In this work, influential events concerning the Antarctic ozone hole were identified in a dataset containing 35 years of ozone measurements over southern Brazil. The effects of environmental doses of UVB and UVA radiation were addressed on the morphology and development of Hypsiboas pulchellus tadpole (Anura: Hylidae), as well as on the induction of malformation after the conclusion of metamorphosis. These analyzes were complemented by the detection of micronucleus formation in blood cells. 72 ozone depletion events were identified from 1979 to 2013. Surprisingly, their yearly frequency increased three-fold during the last 17 years. The results clearly show that H. pulchellus tadpole are much more sensitive to UVB than UVA light, which reduces their survival and developmental rates. Additionally, the rates of micronucleus formation by UVB were considerably higher compared to UVA even after the activation of photolyases enzymes by a further photoreactivation treatment. Consequently, a higher occurrence of malformation was observed in UVB-irradiated individuals. These results demonstrate the severe genotoxic impact of UVB radiation on this treefrog species and its importance for further studies aimed to assess the impact of the increased levels of solar UVB radiation on declining species of the Hylidae family. Ecological studies are usually based on species abundance data per sample. As a consequence, the research can be time-consuming and require a significant amount of financial resources to overcome uncertainties in taxonomic identifications and estimations of relative abundances. We assessed the use of genus-level data as a surrogate for species-level data in studies attempting to describe the beta-diversity patterns of several aquatic communities. Furthermore, we investigated whether presence-absence data is sufficient to describe ecological patterns and whether the spatial variation of rare species can also be described by genus-level data. We used data from five biological aquatic groups sampled over periods of up to 2 years in different sites of the Upper Paraná River floodplain. We found strong evidence that beta-diversity patterns in species-level data can be successfully described using genus-level and presence-absence data in all biological groups, although efficacy of using genus-level data as a surrogate for species-level may depend on the species:genus ratio. Moreover, communities with both taxonomic resolutions had similar responses to environmental variation. Our results indicate ecological studies in floodplains with different biological groups can benefit from strategy based on genus-level or presence-absence data to reduce cost and time. Five new species of Tanytarsus van der Wulp (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanytarsini) from Brazil are described and illustrated. T. longitubuli sp. n. and T. pseudocurvicristatus sp. n., are described as larva, pupa and male; T. hirsutus sp. n., as male and pupa, and T. corumba sp. n. and T. jatai sp. n. as males. Except for one species from Pantanal (western central Brazil), most species were collected in southeast Brazil, from lowland streams and lakes. New occurrences of known species of Tanytarsus in Brazil, Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso states, are also given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent changes in Brazilian legislation reduced the width of riparian forest buffer needed to be preserved in private properties from 30 to 15 m or less. The consequences of these modifications can be dramatic, mainly because riparian buffer width is an important parameter for riparian forest structure and functioning. Our study assessed whether (1) macroinvertebrate family richness and Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) family richness decrease with reduced riparian buffer width; (2) taxonomic composition and functional feeding group (FFG) composition of macroinvertebrates vary with a reduced riparian buffer width; and (3) reduced riparian buffer width similarly influence the macroinvertebrate community in different stream substrates. We selected three fragments with different riparian buffer widths (>40, <30, and <15 m) in three streams (fourth and fifth orders) in the Sinos River watershed, southern Brazil. Our results show that on all substrate types, reducing the width of the riparian buffer altered neither the macroinvertebrate richness nor EPT richness. However, EPT richness was greater in the substrates stone and gravel than leaf litter, independent of riparian buffer width. There was a significant difference in macroinvertebrate composition among riparian buffer widths. The macroinvertebrate composition and FFG differed among substrates, independent of riparian buffer width. This study showed that riparian buffer widths <15 m altered the macroinvertebrate community. A width greater than 15 m is necessary to maintain the composition and trophic conditions of macroinvertebrate families similar to those found in reference states of conservation. Ciliates occur in all major aquatic and soil environments worldwide and are important links in the microbial food webs, which, along with other free-living protists, are generally overlooked in biodiversity conservation programs. In Brazil, the northern region comprises the Brazilian Amazonia, an area widely known for its huge biodiversity. However, the diversity of ciliates in that region is still almost unknown. As result of the present study, a total of 21 species of ciliates, distributed among 15 genera, were inventoried from samples of eutrophized water collected in the city of Belém, capital of the state of Pará, one of the states which comprise the Brazilian Amazonia. In addition, a local population of the rare scuticociliate Cristigera hammeri is described from optical and electron microscopy observations, and its synonymy with C. pleuronemoides is rejected based on new evidence. The article presents a study related to the analysis of daily variation of zooplankton abundance and evenness in the Rosana reservoir, Brazil, based on biotic and abiotic inferences. The procedure under study included the collection of Zooplankton sample daily at three sampling stations in a lateral arm of the Rosana Reservoir. The result revealed that the zooplankton did not present significant differences in abundance and evenness among sampling stations.

The use of species traits offers a promising approach to the understanding of the main processes underlying metacommunity patterns. We analyzed samples of periphytic algae in 30 environments of the Upper Paraná River floodplain in southeastern Brazil, to test the hypotheses that variation in species composition of algal groups with low dispersal abilities would be mainly explained by spatial variables; on the other hand, algal groups with higher dispersal abilities would be better explained by environmental variables. The variation in community structure was mainly correlated with environmental variables. This result is in line with a growing body of evidence indicating a predominant role of species-sorting processes. The more-refined prediction that the spatial variables would gradually become more important across a gradient of adherence or size was, however, not supported by our analyses. Also, the large unexplained variation suggested that these periphytic communities were assembled by idiosyncratic events, or that other variables that are often neglected in studies of aquatic metacommunities needed to be included. Abstract: Historically, the ichthyofauna of large Brazilian rivers has been subject to anthropogenic interference, such as impoundments. Currently, cage fish farming systems are a new source of impact on aquatic ecosystems. The objective of this study was to characterise the impact of freshwater fish farms on the feeding of five species of Neotropical freshwater fish. Specimens of Astyanax altiparanae, Galeocharax knerii, Iheringicthys labrosus, Pimelodus maculatus and Plagioscion squamosissimus were sampled in areas around two systems of cage fish farming (CF), and two control areas (CT) that were not influenced by this activity. Results show that there were significant changes in the diet of trophic generalist species (A. altiparanae, P. maculatus and I. labrosus) accompanied by a related increase in the condition factor values of these species in cage areas. Trophic specialist species, such as the carnivorous fish species G. knerii and P. squamosissimus, presented small differences between the CF and CT areas with regard to diet and showed no differences in other analyses performed. In conclusion, cage fish farms can affect the natural diet of trophic generalist fish species, directly affecting the nutritional status (condition factor), where food wastes was found to be one of the principal items consumed by this trophic guild. Results indicate that these species are responsible for recycling a great quantity of organic matter transferred by this type of activity, which, along with local fishery activities, contribute to mitigation of associated processes of eutrophication. Abstract: A 190cm mangrove sediment core from the Ilha do Cardoso State Park, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil was analyzed for pollen, diatoms as well as carbon and nitrogen isotopes. The goal was to determine the dynamics of the coastal terrestrial/aquatic ecosystems, vegetation history and climate change in this region of the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. The values for total organic carbon—TOC (from ~3 up to 40%), C/N ratios (from ~10 up to 130), and δ 15N (~0 to >8) are associated with well preserved aquatic and terrestrial organic matter and possibly influenced by nitrogen cycling (e.g., denitrification) that caused 15N enrichment between >40,000calyrB.P. and ~23,000calyrB.P. Depleted δ 13C values (~ -28.0‰) are also observed and indicate the predominance of C3 plants. During this time interval, the pollen analysis reveals the presence of the genera Ilex, Alchornea, Weinmannia, Myrsine, Symplocos, Drimys and Podocarpus on a site currently occupied by mangrove vegetation. These data suggest that in the past prevailed a colder and more humid climate than today, with a low relative sea-level. From ~23,000calyrB.P. to ~2200calyrB.P. a sedimentary hiatus likely occurred, related to an erosive event associated to the post glacial sea-level rise. Since at least ~2200calyrB.P., sediments are marked by relatively low C/N ratios (from 2 to 27), exhibit more enriched δ 13C (from ~-26.0‰ to −24.0‰) and δ 15N (up to ~7) values and are characterized by the presence of marine diatoms. Abstract: Measurements of biotic homogenization are important for ascertaining the nature and extent of human impacts on biodiversity, especially in relation to habitat alteration, species introductions and water quality degradation. All of these impacts are typical of impounded systems. Our objectives in this study were to investigate the increasing biotic homogenization and the impacts of introduced species in the Tietê cascade reservoir system (State of São Paulo, Brazil). Biotic homogenization is the replacement of local biota by non-indigeonous species, leading to a gradual increase in biotic similarity over time. In this study, the decades analyzed (1980–89, 1990–99 and 2000–2009), revealed the progressive loss of the native species in the system. We used Jaccard''s coefficient to measure the changes in biotic homogeneity across decades. In the first comparison (2000s vs. 1980s), the predominant process observed was differentiation, meaning that the biotic assemblages, in the sequence of five reservoirs studied, became more dissimilar. These changes were related to the extirpation of common species from reservoirs. In the second comparison period (2000s vs. 1990s), we observed a tendency towards biotic homogenization, meaning that the number of species in common among reservoirs was increasing. This shift was related to the loss of unique native species and the progressive environmental maturation of each reservoir. The process of homogenization may continue as the reservoirs age and as introduced fish species are dispersed and native species are displaced. For example, we observed the replacement of Geophagus brasiliensis (native) by Geophagus surinamensis (non-native) in the downstream reservoirs, likely due to the introduction of non-native predators (Cichlidae spp.). Introduction: Flowing of the acid mine drainage may contaminate the adjacent water bodies causing substantial changes in the aquatic ecosystem. This aspect is the most relevant problem in the southern of Santa Catarina once the contaminated areas are inserted in the watershed of the Araranguá, Urussanga, and Tubarão rivers, increasing the need for recovery studies. These areas are between Criciúma, Içara, Urussanga, Siderópolis, Lauro Müller, Orleans, and Alfredo Wagner towns where a conservation unit exist called the Environmental Preservation Area of Baleia Franca. Aiming to compare the kinetics of the ash derived from burning coal and to neutralize acid mine drainage, different neutralizer, limestone, fly, and bottom ash, was mounted on a pilot scale experiment. Discussion: The transport parameters showed the same order of infiltration and dispersion: fly ash < bottom ash < limestone. The order of measured alkalinity was: limestone < fly ash < bottom ash, with pH values of 9.34, 12.07, and 12.25, respectively. The limestone kinetics of acidic drainage neutralization was first order with reaction rate constant k = 0.0963 min, bottom ash was 3/4 with k = 0.0723 mol L min, and the fly ash had higher order kinetics, 4/3, with reaction rate constant k = 27.122 L mol min. However, by mathematical modeling, it was found that due to a combination of transport and kinetics, only limestone treatment reached a pH above 6 within 5 years, corresponding to the ideal as planned. Abstract: The present study aimed at assessing spatial and temporal changes in the composition and structure of an endemic fish assemblage and the possible associations with introduces species in a system of cascading reservoirs, in Iguaçu River, state of Paraná, southern Brazil. We collected 135,639 specimens: 131,716 individuals of endemic species and 3923 of introduced species. The most abundant introduced species were: Odontesthes bonariensis (85.1%), Prochilodus lineatus (7.5%) and Tilapia rendalli (4.9%). Significant spatial and temporal differences in richness were observed for both endemic and introduced species. The composition and structure of the assemblage of endemic and introduced fish exhibited significant spatial differences. The Procrustes analysis showed a significant spatial association between composition and structure of the assemblage of endemic and introduced fish in Iguaçu River. Changes in the endemic fish assemblage of Iguaçu River related to the establishment of introduced species and to habitat changes caused by cascading reservoirs enable advancing knowledge on environmental impacts in freshwater ecoregions. The Guarapiranga Reservoir is a very important aquatic system due to the fact that it is one of the main water reservoirs for South America's largest city, São Paulo, Brazil. Guarapiranga basin is located within the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo and the reservoir itself is located in the Northern part of the basin occupying approximately 26 km. This reservoir is characterized by environmental impacts from urban invasion, industrial and sewage wastes, all of which seriously affect its water quality and, consequently, the sediment quality. Two collection campaigns were undertaken: April 2009 and June 2010. The samples were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) in order to determine the following elements: major (Fe, K and Na), trace (As, Ba, Br, Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Rb, Sb, Sc, Ta, Tb, Th, U and Zn) and rare earths (Ce, Eu, La, Lu, Nd, Sm, Tb and Yb). The organic matter and granulometric distribution were also evaluated and multivariate analysis was applied to the results. The study of elemental ratios indicated that the amount of elements present in the Guarapiranga Reservoir is mainly of detrital origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increased pollution in the aquatic ecosystem has led to the investigation of toxic elements in sea water by using marine organisms to assess marine pollution from human activities. Among these organisms, the mollusks bivalves have been used as biomonitors since they can accumulate trace elements and other substances, without the occurrence of their death. In this study, Perna perna mussels were transplanted from a mussel farm (reference region) to four sites located in coastal regions of São Paulo State, Brazil, close to anthropic discharge areas. Vanadium was determined in mussel tissues by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Quality control of V analysis was checked by analyzing biological reference materials and the results obtained were precise and in good agreement with the certified values. Comparisons between the V concentrations obtained in transplanted mussels indicated that those from São Sebastião region, close to an oil terminal presented the highest concentration of this element, during spring. Conservation of species in agroecosystems has attracted attention. Irrigation channels can improve habitats and offer conditions for freshwater species conservation. Two questions from biodiversity conservation point of view are: 1) Can the irrigated channels maintain a rich diversity of macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and amphibians over the cultivation cycle? 2) Do richness, abundance and composition of aquatic species change over the rice cultivation cycle? For this, a set of four rice field channels was randomly selected in Southern Brazilian wetlands. In each channel, six sample collection events were carried out over the rice cultivation cycle (June 2005 to June 2006). A total of 160 taxa were identified in irrigated channels, including 59 macrophyte species, 91 taxa of macroinvertebrate and 10 amphibian species. The richness and abundance of macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and amphibians did not change significantly over the rice cultivation cycle. However, the species composition of these groups in the irrigation channels varied between uncultivated and cultivated periods. Our results showed that the species diversity found in the irrigation channels, together with the permanence of water enables these man-made aquatic networks to function as important systems that can contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in regions where the wetlands were converted into rice fields. The conservation of the species in agriculture, such as rice field channels, may be an important alternative for biodiversity conservation in Southern Brazil, where more than 90% of wetland systems have already been lost and the remaining ones are still at high risk due to the expansion of rice production. Abstract: The acute poisoning of chronic renal patients during hemodialysis sessions in 1996 in Caruaru City (Pernambuco State, Brazil) stimulated an intensive search for the cause of this severe complication. This search culminated in the identification of microcystins (MC), hepatotoxic cyclic heptapeptides produced by cyanobacteria, as the causative agents. More than ten years later, additional research data provides us with a better understanding of the factors related to cyanobacterial bloom occurrence and production of MC in Brazil and other South American countries. The contamination of water bodies and formation of toxic blooms remains a very serious concern, especially in countries in which surface water is used as the main source for human consumption. The purpose of this review is to highlight the discoveries of the past 15 years that have brought South American researchers to their current level of understanding of toxic cyanobacteria species and that have contributed to their knowledge of factors related to MC production, mechanisms of action and consequences for human health and the environment. Abstract: The micronucleus (MN) and nuclear abnormality (NA) tests were employed to evaluate the genotoxic potential of the Lucrecia dam (RN, Brazil) located in a semi-arid region and influenced by crop irrigation and irregular rainfall. The analyses of these water samples demonstrated the presence of several cyanobacteria as well as metals and radioactivity. The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was used for micronucleus and nuclear abnormality assays and analysis of metal concentrations in gills and liver samples. Genotoxic assays in source water fish showed a significant increase in the frequency of nuclear damage (MN and NA) in relation to the negative control group. In conclusion, the results obtained with water surface and biological samples from the Lucrecia dam suggest that this important water resource contains a number of chemical and microbiological pollutants with genotoxic potential and that these substances may be compromising the species inhabiting this ecosystem. Particular care must be taken to prevent further degradation of this water supply. The objective of this paper is to describe qualitatively channel morphology from the reflectance pattern of high sediment concentrations. The spectral behaviour of the aquatic environment is not only a function of water depth, but also the concentration and spatial distribution of suspended sediments, inorganic and organic, among others. We used Landsat 7/ETM+ (Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus) images for mapping river channel morphology in Sao Francisco river in Brazil. The methodology was based on: (a) the elaboration of the digital elevation model (DEM) of bathymetric data, (b) the development of an algorithm based on bands ratio index of Landsat7/ETM+ digital image, and (c) the comparison between bathymetry and developed index. Our approach was to develop an index for the emission feature in red band (ETM+ 3 band) considering its height. A difference behaviour in relation to the index and the depth for both symmetric and asymmetric channels was observed. Thus, the river morphology was established, in an indirect way, by considering the spatial distribution of the sedimentary plumes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The macroinvertebrates have been used as indicators of environmental quality. The objective of this study was to compare the quality of water which drains from the rice flooded crop (drainage water) with the irrigation water, sourced from Gravataí River, near the Porto Alegre City, using benthonic macroinvertebrate community as bioindicator. This study was carryout at the Rice Experiment Station of IRGA, in Cachoeirinha (RS), during the 2006/2007 harvest. A layer of 5cm soil, containing benthonic macroinvertebrate was sampled, using a Corer (78.54cm²), at the irrigation source (Gravatai River and Irrigation Channel) and at the effluents receptor (Drainage Channel). Oxygen dissolved (O2) in water also was registered in each point. The sampled material was filtered in a mesh sieve with f 0.5mm and fixed. The macroinvertebrates were identified and the ecologic parameters as abundance, richness, diversity and evenness were evaluated and compared among the sample points. Such ecologic parameters showed a more complex and structured community at the drainage channel, than at irrigation channel, and at Gravatai River, indicating that the environmental features is better in the point which received the water that pass through the crop, than at the irrigation points. Therefore, the benthic macroinvertebrate community in this study suggests that effects generated by cities and industries of Porto Alegre region are more aggressive to aquatic environments than that promoted by rice crop managed according to the technical guidelines. This study describes the application of a protocol for biological assessment of water quality at first to third order streams at Serra dos Órgãos, an area covered by Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Major impacts in the region are domestic effluents and deforestation. Our main objective is to establish biocriteria for the establishment of the Serra dos Órgãos Multimetric Index (SOMI) based on benthic macroinvertebrates. We used data from previous studies, sampled by experienced biologists, from 1999 through 2002. The benthic macroinvertebrate community was sampled in 12 reference sites and seven impaired sites in three river basins: Guapimirim, Macaé and Grande, all from the same bioregion. From the 22 tested metrics, 6 were included in the SOMI (% Diptera, % Coleoptera, Family Taxa, EPT Taxa, BMWP-CETEC and % Shredders). Scores (5, 3 or 1) were developed for these metrics to allow for aggregation into the index. Seven intermediately impaired sites were used for evaluating the applicability of the multimetric index. We concluded that the SOMI is a robust easy-to-apply tool for biomonitoring programs in the Serra dos Órgãos region, south-east Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In tropical lakes relatively little is known about the general relationship between nutrient concentration and phytoplankton biomass. Using data from 192 lakes from tropical and subtropical regions we examine the relationship between total P (TP) and chlorophyll (Chl). The lakes are all located between 30° S to 31° N include systems in Asia, Africa, and North and South America but are dominated by Brazilian ( n=79) and subtropical N. American ( n=67) systems. The systems vary in morphometry (mean depth and lake area), trophic state as well total N (TN) to␣total P (TP) ratios and light extinction. Despite a nearly 500-fold range in TP concentrations (2–970 μg P l−1), there was a poorer relationship between log TP and log Chl ( r 2=0.42) than is generally observed for temperate systems from either narrow or broad geographic regions. N limitation is not a likely explanation for the relatively weak TP–Chl relationship in the tropical–subtropical systems. Systems had high average TN:TP ratios and neither a multiple regression with log TP and log TN nor separating systems with high TN:TP (>17 by weight) improved the predictive power of the log TP–log Chl relationship. The diversity and composition of drift invertebrate assemblages were evaluated along a longitudinal gradient of an altitudinal stream in southeastern Brazil. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of seasonality, stream order, and some abiotic factors on invertebrate drift and the use of drifting invertebrate assemblages to assess aquatic invertebrate diversity. Drift samples were collected over a 24 h period using nets (open area of 0.08 m2; mesh 0.250 mm), partially submerged (60%) in the water column. Taxonomic richness, Pielou evenness (J), Shannon-Wiener diversity (H'), and total density of drift invertebrate assemblages were used in unpairedt-tests, Kruskal-Wallis and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results showed a high taxonomic richness of aquatic invertebrates, with 91taxafound. Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera represented together c. 80% of the total density of drift organisms. The drift approach allowed the collection of new and raretaxa, besides the knowledge of pupae stage of several chironomid genera. Significant differences in the taxonomic richness and diversity of drift invertebrate assemblages were found between the rainy and dry periods, indicating a significant influence of seasonality. An increase in water flow and electrical conductivity were associated with the increase in the taxonomic richness and diversity in the rainy period. This paper describes the spatial variability of fish communities and identifies patterns of association between fish communities and habitat variables, including anthropogenic factors. We sampled streams inside and in the surroundings of a rain forest reserve in the southeast of Brazil in the rainy season. We could distinguish three main groups of streams: upland streams (draining the upland, flat portions of the mountain ridge of Serra de Paranapiacaba), adventitious streams of clearwater mountain torrents (small streams draining confined valleys in the slopes of this sierra), and large streams of clearwater mountain torrents (relatively unconstrained large streams close to the foots of the mountains). Despite the high variability of fish communities associated with these streams we identified some patterns using exploratory statistical analyses. These patterns were corroborated by additional field observations and information from the scientific literature. The main differences in fish community composition and diversity among the three groups of streams are probably related to large-scale factors such as elevation and position of the stream in the watershed. However, differences within these three groups seem to be mostly due to site-specific factors. Differences of instream characteristics are likely to be caused by natural variability of the ecosystems but also, in some cases, by human disturbances like pollution from human settlements, agriculture and mining. Peritrich epibiont protozoans and metazooplankton (rotifers, cladocerans and copepods) were investigated seasonally in a shallow eutrophic artificial reservoir in a subtropical region (Monjolinho Reservoir, Brazil). The ciliated peritrichs Rhabdostyla sp. and Scyphidia sp. were found to colonize individuals of different metazooplanktonic groups, especially copepods (47.20% of the total number of metazooplanktonic organisms found with epibionts and 57.14% of infection in the copepod population). Copepods also had the greatest epibiont load, followed by cladocerans and rotifers. Rotifers were the most important metazooplanktonic group (90.14% of the total) and the taxa observed with epibionts were Filinia longiseta, Polyarthra, Brachionus and Keratella, with highest preference for the first organism. F. longiseta was present at low density compared with the others and the preference as a substrate for epibionts may be related to its type of adhesion surface (soft) and/or feeding habits (particle feeding). The abundance and ecologic distribution of the shrimp R. constrictus were compared among three different embayments within the northern coast of São Paulo State (23°S, 45°W); i.e. Mar Virado (MV), Ubatuba (UBA) and Ubatumirim (UBM). Key environmental factors were monitored for a better understanding of the distributional patterns of this species, namely temperature, salinity, depth, organic matter content and texture of sediments. In each bay, six transects were delimited, four parallel to the coastline and the other two in areas adjacent to rocky shores. Monthly samples were taken over a 2-year period (1998 and 1999), using a shrimp fishing boat equipped with double-rig nets. Abundance data were treated separately according to environmental characteristics. A total of 4978 specimens was obtained; 921 at MV, 1948 at UBA and 2109 at UBM. The spatial distribution of R. constrictus differed among bays. Higher abundance values were recorded at areas where silt and clay comprised less than 70% of the sediment. A more diversified sediment at UBM and UBA apparently favours the establishment of this species in the region. Its abundance also followed a seasonal trend, higher during spring and summer when intrusions of cold South Atlantic Coastal Waters (SACW) are frequent, promoting the migration of this shrimp to more sheltered areas.
