The expressive therapies had an improvement in Brazil after the the film "Nise: The Heart of Madness", that tells briefly and cinematographically the usage of art therapy with schizophrenic patients in a psychiatric hospital in Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s. This research work was done with the purpose of investigation on the way professionals see their work progress with expressive therapies in their patients at São Pedro Hospital, in the city of Porto Alegre. This is a qualitative descriptive and analytical research with the staff of Creativity Workshop from Hospital. A semi-structured interview was analyzed according to Bardin's content analysis. The result of the analysis consists in four categories: How is the work at Creativity Workshop; How do they perceive the use of expressive therapies with psychotic patients; How do they perceive the evolution of patients attended to. How do they deal with this experience of working with expressive therapies. The first category contains information related to the operation of the Creativity Workshop, the second, the work with expressive therapies in the professionals' view, bringing issues of freedom in work development. The third category presents the evolution of patients. The fourth and last category presents the experience of the professionals who work in this context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ART therapy , *WOMEN , *AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL memory , *EDUCATION research - Abstract
This article shares some of my doctoral experiences in a practice-based PhD research in arts developed at the Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. It locates art practice within the academic research realm and contributes to researchers working on autobiographical studies and practice-based research methods. By offering an overview on my research topic focusing on the relationship between language and place in the life of Brazilian women living in London, I reflect on the relevance of “not-knowing” as a fruitful space for researching autobiographical and situated life narratives through art practice. The article concludes that qualitative methods are relevant for building passages from the individual to the collective sphere of an art practice developed within geographical displacement and in the context of academic research. Children are considered competent social actors. Although they are able to express their opinions, they may have some difficulties in answering direct verbal questions, requiring researchers and health professionals to enter their world by using auxiliary resources for communication. This study presents the experience of using finger puppets as a playful strategy for improving interaction and communication with hospitalized children with cancer, aged seven to 12. It describes the strategy of making and using puppets as an auxiliary tool to communicate with children with cancer and presents the results and limitations of using puppets in clinical practice. The use of the puppets, creatively and in accordance with the children's motor, cognitive, and emotional development, showed benefits, such as allowing the children to freely express themselves; respecting their autonomy; and minimizing the hierarchical adult-child relationship. The use of puppets is an appropriate strategy to communicate with hospitalized children. This tool can also enrich clinical practice, as it encourages children with cancer to report their experience of being ill and also helps the health team during evaluation and intervention. Infusion of Life: patient perceptions of expressive therapy during chemotherapy sessions Through a quanti-qualitative study, we observed the effects of group expressive therapy ( ET) sessions on patients' feelings and sense of well-being, as part of the Infusion of Life project. This project is part of a broader programme to improve integral care, developed by an interdisciplinary team headed by a medical doctor who is also an artist and expert in ET. We offered 48 group ET sessions to a total of 253 outpatients with cancer or autoimmune disorders receiving venous infusions in the chemotherapy room of University Hospital Antonio Pedro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The qualitative analysis showed that the programme was a pleasant way to spend time, revived their sense of humour, relieved symptoms, provided meaningful experiences, improved their relationships with staff, enabled expression of their feelings, stimulated them to be creative, improved coping resources and reorganisation of the psyche, and renewed their perspective on life. Family and spirituality were major sources of support. Expressive therapy was shown to be flexible and applicable in small spaces, using recycled materials, even with patients with restrained movements; it can also offer great benefits with relatively small investments if a qualified team is in charge of planning, executing, and auditing the work. - Abstract
In 2008, this project began with a small group of volunteers in a poor rural community in northeastern Brazil using art therapy to increase the knowledge of pregnant women about gestation, birth, and care of their babies. After positive results were seen within that community, the methodology was published as a book to be replicated in other states of Brazil. In 2010/2011, after being selected as a "Young Champions of Maternal Health" winner by Ashoka and Maternal Task Force competition, the project was adapted for the local culture in Mali and replicated in villages in West Africa with workshops using songs, poems, stories, crafts, and cinema. It continues to be implemented throughout Brazil, and since 2012, at the Institute Santos Dumont, a health, teaching, and research center in a rural area in Northeast Brazil. It is also used as a teaching strategy for students of medicine, physiotherapy, psychology, resident doctors, and multiprofessionals. It contributes to the development of attitudes, health education skills, and interprofessional education experience. It also provides information and educates groups to empower women about their health and rights to make informed choices regarding pregnancy and childbirth., Competing Interests: None

This article presents the results of a qualitative study examining a series of artistic and cultural activities that emerged over the last years in Brazil in the context of psychiatric reform. Using both semi-structured interviews with users and mental health professionals as the authors of these activities, as well as participant observation in cultural and artistic events within the period 2007-2010, this study analyzes the role of recognition within the artistic-cultural dimension in the production of subjectivities different from those produced by the traditional psychiatric field.

Study about the employment of the artistic approach in the cares developed at the CAPS. Founded on conceptual bases of Psychiatric Reform, the object of study has been broached by means of an exploratory field research through interview with CAPS's professionals. The results found indicate that activities with artistic basis are used by them aiming at a positive interaction with service users, and in the perspective of their psychosocial rehabilitation. We concluded that the work at the CAPS itself brings up-to-date creative potentialities of both professionals and users, being art assumed as an strategy of care.
