Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Envenoming caused by scorpion sting is a serious public health problem. In Brazil, 13,038 accidents caused by venomous animals have been reported. Of this total, 53% of the cases and 14 deaths were caused by scorpions. Furthermore, Tityus serrulatus (Buthidae) is the most dangerous scorpion due to the high toxicity of its venom. The treatment is the common supportive therapy and the serum therapy, but some people do not have access to both therapies and seek healing through the use of medical plants. Aim of the study: This study evaluated the ability of the crude extract and fractions from the leaves of Ipomoea asarifolia in neutralizing the main biological effects caused by Tityus serrulatus envenoming in mice. Materials and methods: BALB/c mice were pretreated (i.v.) with 100μλ of aqueous extracts and fractions dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol (CH2Cl2, EtOAc, and n-BuOH, respectively) of Ipomoea asarifolia, rutin or saline. Then, the animals received 100μλ (i.p.) of venom of Tityus serrulatus (0.8mg/kg). After six hours, the peritoneal lavage was performed with PBS and the number cells were determined using a Neubauer chamber. The supernatants were collected for determination of cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-12, and IL-1β. Results: The aqueous extract, fractions and rutin, at all doses, significantly reduced cell migration, which was endorsed by the reduction of the levels of certain cytokines. Conclusion: This is the first study that demonstrated the potential effect of Ipomoea asarifolia against inflammation caused by Tityus serrulatus venom, suggesting that these extracts and/or their bioactive molecules, especially the flavonoid rutin, have potential use in the therapy of this envenomation. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Rourea induta Planch. is a small tree or shrub growing wild in Brazil and belonging to the Connaraceae family. It is used for the treatment of Chagas disease and as antirheumatic in folk medicine. This study was designed to investigate the antinociceptive activity of the aqueous extract (AERi) of Rourea induta leaves in rodents, as well as isolate and identify components that can be responsible for its effect. Material and methods: The antinociceptive effect of orally administered AERi was evaluated in behavioral models of acute (formalin) and chronic [complete Freund׳s adjuvant (CFA)] pain in mice. We also investigated the possible involvement of opioid receptors and proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α) in the antinociceptive effect of the AERi. In addition, a nonspecific effect of AERi was evaluated by measuring locomotor activity and corporal temperature. Finally, we performed a phytochemical analysis of AERi. Results: HPLC titration revealed the presence of hyperin (21.6mg/g), quercetin-3-O-β-xyloside (4.4mg/g), quercetin-3-O-α-arabinofuranoside (12.0mg/g), and quercetin (2.1mg/g). It was also possible to isolate minor constituents׳ chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid and procyanidin C1. The oral administration of AERi (100mg/kg) significantly inhibited the neurogenic (37±5%) and inflammatory (34±7%) phases of formalin-induced pain. Acute and repeated treatment of animals with AERi (100mg/kg, p.o.) once a day markedly reduced the mechanical hypersensitivity response induced by CFA, and this effect was evident until the day 10. Moreover, repeated treatment with AERi (100mg/kg, p.o.) significantly reduced the levels of IL-1β and TNF-α in the paw (22±7% and 50±19%) and in the spinal cord (100% and 100%) when compared to the CFA group. The AERi (100mg/kg, p.o.) markedly reduced biting behavior induced by intrathecal injection of TNF-α (81±11%). Finally, the effect of AERi was not associated with changes in locomotor activity or the corporal temperature of animals. Conclusion: These data show that aqueous extract of Rourea induta has significant antinociceptive action, which seems to be associated with an inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines activated pathways. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Croton campestris A. St.-Hill., popularly known as “velame do campo”, is a species native from savannah area of Northeast Brazil, which is used by traditional communities in folk medicine for a variety of health problems, especially detoxification, inflammation and gastritis. The present study investigates the possible gastric antiulcer activity of Croton campestris root extract (CCRE) and mechanisms of action underlying this effect. Materials and methods: Gastric lesions were induced in mice by ethanol, acidified ethanol and indomethacin. CCRE was previously administered orally in doses ranging from 50 to 750mg/kg. Stomach lesions were measured. The involvement of Nitric Oxide (NO), prostaglandins (PGEs), ATP-dependent K+ channel and adrenergic receptor was investigated through specific inhibitors. Results: CCRE produced significant antiulcer activity against absolute ethanol, acidified ethanol and indomethacin induced gastric lesions. The pretreatment with L-NAME (10mg/kg, p.o.), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis and indomethacin (10mg/kg, s.c.), an inhibitor of prostaglandin production, reversed the antiulcer action of CCRE. Conclusion: Taking together, these results suggest that the antiulcer activity of CCRE is dependent of NO and prostaglandin pathways possibly due to its ability to stimulate the synthesis of NO, and activation of endogenous prostaglandin production. This study investigated maximal and submaximal performance (power output) and physiological responses (oxygen uptake, heart rate and blood lactate concentration) of eight male rowers to two different incremental tests to exhaustion performed either in a rowing ergometer without (regular) or with the slide, as well as to a 2000 m race simulation, conducted in a randomized order. Peak oxygen uptake (O2peak) was statistically higher (3.4%) in the regular test (5.18 ± 0.44 L.min−1) compared with the slide condition (5.01 ± 0.37 L.min−1;P= 0.005). Time for the on-water race simulation was significantly correlated with the slope of theO2-power relationship in the slide condition (r= –0.73,P= 0.043) andO2peakduring the test in the slide condition was correlated to meanO2at the on-water race simulation (r = 0.78; P = 0.024). Purpose: Evidence suggests that plasma retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and insulin resistance are related to body fat (BF). We aimed to assess the relationship between RBP4 and insulin resistance with obesity in a mixed (skin color) cohort of the Brazilian population. Methods: A nested case-control study was conducted in 227 schoolchildren aged 7-14 years. Schoolchildren with a high BF percentage (% BF, ≥ 30 for girls and ≥ 25 for boys) were identified as the obese group ( n = 137), and those with lower values were identified as the non-obese group ( n = 90). Percentage of body fat (% BF) was determined by tetrapolar bioimpedance (Quantum II, RJL System), RBP4 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Immunology Consultants Laboratory), plasma fasting insulin by chemiluminescent immunoassay (Access Immunoassay System) and insulin resistance by the homeostasis model insulin resistance (IR) index. Serum lipid profile and arterial blood pressure were evaluated. Results: The significant independent risk factors associated with obesity were as follows: male sex, increased serum LDL-C, RBP4 and IR. Among children with higher RBP4, the association with obesity increased significantly (from 3.1 to 8.5) in the presence of insulin resistance, when compared to higher RBP4 and non-insulin resistance. Conclusion: IR and RBP4 showed significant associations with obesity and traditional CVD risk factors. They might therefore be used as a marker for CVD risk and have clinical implications in the development of comorbidities associated with obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of two dietary patterns in which carbohydrates and proteins were eaten mostly at lunch or dinner on body weight and composition, energy metabolism, and biochemical markers in overweight/obese men. Methods: Fifty-eight men (30.0 ± 7.4 years; 30.8 ± 2.4 kg/m) followed a covert hypocaloric balanced diet (−10 % of daily energy requirements) during 8 weeks. Subjects were randomly assigned to three groups: control diet (CT); diurnal carbohydrate/nocturnal protein (DCNP); and nocturnal carbohydrate/diurnal protein (NCDP). Main analyzed outcomes were weight loss, body composition, diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT), and glucose/lipid profile. Results: In all groups, a significant decrease in body weight, BMI, and fat mass (kg and %) was verified, without differences between groups. Interestingly, within group analyses showed that the fat-free mass (kg) significantly decreased in NCDP and in CT after 8-week intervention, but not in DCNP. A detrimental increase in fasting glucose, insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA) was verified only in DCNP, while NCDP and CT groups presented a non-significant reduction. Moreover, significant differences between DCNP and the other groups were detected for fasting insulin and HOMA. After the adjustments, NCDP presented a significantly higher DIT and energy expenditure after lunch, compared with DCNP, but after dinner, there were no differences among groups. Conclusion: Eating carbohydrates mostly at dinner and protein mostly at lunch within a hypocaloric balanced diet had similar effect on body composition and biochemical markers, but higher effect on DIT compared with control diet. Research is presented that examined the effects of a 21-week competitive season on 34 child soccer players' salivary immunoglobulin A (SIgA) response and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) symptoms. The study found that the demands of training and competition affected the children's mucosal immune responses.

Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Polygala sabulosa A. W. Bennett is a small herb popularly known as “timutu-pinheirinho” that is widely distributed in southern Brazil and that is used to treat disorders of the bowel and kidney and as a topical anesthetic and expectorant in folk medicine. This study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of the hydroalcoholic extract (HEPs), CH2Cl2 fraction and the steroid α-spinasterol obtained from the aerial parts of Polygala sabulosa in a model of acute inflammation induced by intraperitoneal injection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide in mice. Materials and methods: The anti-inflammatory effect of HEPs (3–300mg/kg, i.g.), CH2Cl2 fraction (0.003–30mg/kg, i.g.) and steroid α-spinasterol (0.001–1mg/kg, i.p. or 1–10mg/kg, i.g.), were evaluated in mice subjected to the acute inflammation caused by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 0.02µg/kg). The anti-inflammatory activity of the HEPs, CH2Cl2 fraction and steroid were assessed by determining the total numbers of leukocytes and differential cell counts (neutrophils and mononuclear cells) and levels of pro-inflammatory (IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6) or anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines in peritoneal fluid. Results: The administration of HEPs (3–300mg/kg, i.g.) completely inhibited inflammatory cell infiltration (300mg/kg, i.g.) and it reduced TNF-α (100–300mg/kg) and IL-1β (100mg/kg) levels in LPS-injected mice. Furthermore, the administration of CH2Cl2 fraction (0.003–30mg/kg, i.g.) or α-spinasterol (0.001–10mg/kg, by i.p. or i.g.) significantly reduces inflammatory cell infiltration in LPS-injected mice. Moreover, dexamethasone (0.5mg/kg, i.p., used as a positive control) inhibited inflammatory cell infiltration and reduced the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 in LPS-injected mice. Conclusions: Taken together, these results provide the first experimental evidence demonstrating that HEPs have significant anti-inflammatory effects on LPS-induced inflammation. These effects appear to be, at least in part, due to the presence of α-spinasterol. These findings support the widespread use of Polygala sabulosa in popular medicine and demonstrate that this plant has therapeutic potential for the development of phytomedicines with anti-inflammatory properties. Objective: to compare the ability and performance of Basic Activities of Daily Living of dependent elderly individuals cared for in a geriatric healthcare center. Method: cross-sectional, observational study with quantitative approach. The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) was applied in 109 elderly individuals cared for in a geriatric healthcare center. Of these, 60 individuals were classified as dependent in the case of basic activities of daily living described according to the International Classification of Functionality, Disability and Health (ICF). The process of triangulation reinforced reliability of data, which included information provided by patients and caregivers and that contained in medical files and objective assessment. Results: the average age was 81.0±7.1 with a predominance of women. The difference between ability and performance was statistically significant (p<0.05) in most daily tasks. Conclusion: the contribution of this study in using ICF was semi-quantitatively interpreting its qualifiers, which enabled more objective comparisons and inferences, and revealed a clear distance between the performance and ability of these individuals in most of the assessed activities. Objective: this study aimed to analyze the interaction of gender in the association between decision time for seeking healthcare services and the sociodemographic and clinical variables. Method: this exploratory, cross-sectional study was performed with 100 individuals interviewed in hospitals in Salvador, Bahia. The chi-square test or Fisher's exact test and the robust linear regression model were used in the analysis. A statistical significance of 5% was adopted. Results: men and women presented long decision times. The decision time was less for smokers and those with constant and/or severe pain. There was an interaction between gender and smoking and between gender and pain radiating to the neck or jaw for the decision time outcome. Conclusion: decision times were long and were influenced by clinical and gender variables. The study provides support for nursing care practices focused on the specificity of these factors and of the genders aiming to reduce the decision time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Psidium cattleianum Sabine is extensively used in Brazilian traditional medicine to treat several diseases including painful disorders. Aim of the study to investigate the toxicity and the possible analgesic activities of the hydroalcoholic extract from the leaves of Psidium cattleianum Sabine (ELPCS), to support its use in folk medicine. To screen the major phytochemical constituents of this extract and evaluate their antioxidant activity. Materials and methods: ELPCS was assessed for its antioxidant activity using the DPPH model. Its analgesic activity was examined using mouse models of acetic acid-induced writhing and hot plate paw licking models. The major phytochemical constituents of the extract were screened; their toxicity on LLC-MK2 mammalian cells was evaluated. Results: ELPCS exhibited significant peripheral analgesic activity at doses of 60, 80, 100, 200 and 400mg/kg in mice, but it did not display central analgesic activity and not was toxic to LLC-MK2 cell (LD 50>400µg/mL). The extract exhibited free radical scavenging activity as evidenced by IC 50 values (15.9µg/mL) obtained by the DPPH method. Phytochemical screening detected flavonoids, saponins, cardiac glycosides, anthraquinones, and tannins. Conclusions: The results of the experimental studies proved the analgesic activity of ELPCS and supported the traditional use of this plant. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Davilla elliptica St.-Hil. (Dilleniaceae) is a medicinal plant traditionally used in Brazil to treat inflammatory processes, to relieve pain, as diuretic, gastro- and hepatoprotective agents. Aim of the study: To undertake the fractionation of the ethanolic extract from Davilla elliptica leaves guided by an antinociceptive assay. Materials and methods: The antinociceptive activity was evaluated through the formalin test in mice. Extract fractionation was performed by percolation through silica gel and partition between immiscible solvents, followed by successive column chromatography over Sephadex LH-20 and preparative RP-HPLC. Structure elucidation of the isolated compound was accomplished by spectroscopic data. Results: The EtOAc and MeOH fractions derived from the crude extract reduced significantly the licking time in the late phase of the formalin test. The bioguided fractionation of the MeOH fraction resulted in the isolation of myricetin-3-O-β-galactopyranoside, which produced significant inhibition on nociception induced by formalin (ID50=0.26mg/kg; p.o.). Conclusions: These results point out that myricetin-3-O-β-galactopyranoside contributes for the antinociceptive effect of Davilla elliptica extract, a constituent considerably more potent than diclofenac, employed as reference drug. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Although Maytenus ilicifolia is used in Brazilian folk medicine as a diuretic drug, no study has been conducted to this date in order to evaluate this ethnopharmacological statement. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate possible mechanisms involved in acute diuretic activity of the ethanolic supernatant of the infusion (SEI) obtained from Maytenus ilicifolia and to assess its relationship with a hypotensive activity by a bioassay-guided fractionation using normotensive Wistar rats. Material and methods: The preparation obtained from the infusion (SEI) and their respective fractions (Fr·H2O and Fr·EtOAc) were orally administered in a single dose to rats. The urine excretion rate, pH, density, conductivity and content of Na+, K+, Cl− and HCO3 − were measured in the urine of saline-loaded animals. Samples of the concentration of electrolytes, urea, creatinine, aldosterone, vasopressin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity were evaluated in collected serum. The hypotensive activity and the involvement of nitric oxide, bradykinin and prostaglandin/cAMP pathway in the hypotensive and diuretic effects were also determined. Results: Water and Na+ excretion rate were significantly increased by Fr·EtOAc and the arterial pressure was significantly reduced, while the urinary excretion of potassium and chloride were reduced. Pre-treatment with indomethacin or DDA (2′,5′-dideoxyadenosine) significantly reduced the hypotensive and diuretic activity observed. All other parameters evaluated were not affected by any treatment. Conclusion: The present study reveals that Fr·EtOAc obtained from Maytenus ilicifolia may present compounds responsible for diuretic and hypotensive activities, and this effect, could involve the prostaglandin/cAMP pathway. The aim of this study was to determine differences and similarities in the motivational characteristics of Brazilian athletes based on Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985). It was analyzed differences between gender (male and female) and type of sport (individual and collective). The sample consisted of 344 athletes, mean age 24.3 ± 6.0. The most subjects were males (64.5%), engaged in team sports (59.9%) and competing at national and international level (64.1%). It was applied the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), validated in Portuguese (Br-SMS) to measure levels of motivation. There were significant differences in the dimensions Extrinsic Motivation to Introjection, Extrinsic Motivation to External Regulation and Amotivation, according to gender. It was also found significant differences in the dimensions Intrinsic Motivation to Toward Accomplish and Extrinsic Motivation the Introjection according to the sport. The results suggest that Brazilian athletes have unique motivational characteristics when compared with athletes from other countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of physical activity in children's development of executive function is not yet consensus among previous studies. So this study aims to evaluate the effects of school based motor stimulation in cognitive function responses in children aged 6 to 10 years of public schools at Brasília-Federal District, Brazil. It was formed two groups control (n = 40) and experimental (n = 40) who were studied before and after the intervention. The variable analyzed was: motor skills, executive function, reaction time and selective attention. The intervention occurred during 7 months, two times week, in a 50 minutes physical education classes. The results showed that there was a significant difference between groups in tests of executive function [F(1, 118) = 13.768, p = .001], reaction time [F(1, 118) = 18.352, p = .001] and attention selective [F(1, 64) = 14.531, p = .001]. Thus, it was observed that the experimental group improved not only its motor performance, but also significantly improved the performance of cognitive functions tested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to compare the glycemic levels of pre-teens after a match unofficial football in a city in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. The study is cross-sectional, where 30 students of 10-14 years of age, of both sexes participated of the school football. Glucose levels were assessed by testing fingertip before and after 30 minutes of a football match. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and expressed as the mean ± standard error of the mean (SEM). We used t tests to compare the concentrations of glucose and body mass index. The average age of the boys was 12.3 (±1.10) years and for girls 12.18 (±1.25), while females accounted for 36.66% of the participants. The data collected indicate that the average blood glucose for boys and girls in pre-game, was 106.4 (±8.84) mg/dL and 96.8 (±12.3) mg/dL, respectively, while after the match that the average was 116.4 (±20.13) mg/dL for boys and 108.8 (±10.6) mg/dL for girls. The Brazilian population is stopping suffering about the child malnutrition but still suffering with the crescent incidence of overweight and obesity in this population. About this the purpose of this study was to investigate whether anthropometric measurements (AA) are being held in schools for physical education teacher and what he has done in possession of the results of these evaluations. 35 school physical education teachers being 17 of public schools and 18 of particular schools answered an objective questionnaire. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the frequency response as the use or not of AA from public (35.3%) and private schools (50%). However, only 29.4 and 27.8% of teachers in public and private schools, respectively, returned assessment reports to parents and students, and these frequency of responses did not differ (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the results show that most public school teachers (64.7%) and half (50%) of private schools do not perform AA in their students and do not return the results to parents and students. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Caesalpinia pyramidalis Tul. (Fabaceae) is an endemic tree of the Northeast region of Brazil, mainly in the Caatinga region. More commonly, inner bark or flowers are traditionally used to treat many painful and inflammatory processes. A common use of this plant is made by macerating a handful of its stem bark in a liter of wine or sugarcane brandy. It is drunk against stomachache, dysenteries, and diarrheas. Materials and methods: The ethanol extract of Caesalpinia pyramidalis inner bark was used in mice via oral route, at the doses of 10, 30, and 100mg/kg, in behavioral models of nociception and investigates some of the mechanisms underlying this effect. Results: The ethanol extract (30 and 100mg/kg, P<0.001), given orally, produced dose dependent inhibition of acetic acid-induced visceral pain. The ethanol extract also caused significant and dose-dependent inhibition of capsaicin-(100mg/kg, P<0.001) and glutamate-(10, 30, and 100mg/kg, P<0.01) induced pain. The antinociception caused by the ethanol extract (30mg/kg) in the abdominal constriction test was significantly attenuated (P<0.001) by intraperitoneal treatment of mice with l-arginine (600mg/kg). Conclusions: Collectively, the present results suggest that the ethanol extract of Caesalpinia pyramidalis produced dose-related antinociception in several models of pain through mechanisms that involved both glutamatergic system and/or the l-arginine–nitric oxide pathway, supporting the folkloric usage of the plant to treat various painful processes. The present study explored how children’s prephonological writing foretells differential learning outcomes in primary school. The authors asked Portuguese-speaking preschool children in Brazil (mean age 4 year 3 months) to spell 12 words. Monte Carlo tests were used to identify the 31 children whose writing was not based on spellings or sounds of the target words. Two and a half years later, the children took a standardized spelling test. The more closely the digram (two-letter sequence) frequencies in the preschool task correlated with those in children’s books, the better scores the children had in primary school, and the more preschoolers used letters from their own name, the lower their subsequent scores. Thus, preschoolers whose prephonological writing revealed attentiveness to the statistical properties of text subsequently performed better in conventional spelling. These analytic techniques may help in the early identification of children at risk for spelling difficulties. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The aim of this study was to assess whether there are differences in the level attention focused and accuracy judges of soccer referee during the soccer match. For this purpose, the sample was composed of eight male referees accredited by the Paulista Football Federation, who officiate official matches of the U-20 Paulista championship in 2003. The test used was Concentrated Attention - Toulouse Piéron, which is designed to measure the speed and accuracy when performing simple tasks of identifying squares, perceptual in nature, without resorting to intellectual functions. The tests were recorded in real time during matches with a digital cam HANDYCAMTM model DCR. The chi-square test showed a significant difference between decisions taken in the first 30 minutes of the second half of the game when compared to the final fifteen minutes (p = 0.003). The test t-paired showed significant difference to the speed of concentration before and after the game (p = 0.005), was not significant for the concentration quality (p = 0.209). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of conventional physical therapy and task specific training associated with electromyographic (EMG) feedback to recover upper limb motor function in patients with hemiparesis caused by stroke. Twelve patients were evaluated and then randomly assigned to either of two groups: Group 1 - Conventional physiotherapy; Group 2 - EMG feedback. Patients attended three weekly 50-min sessions, for eight weeks. The evaluated aspects were motor impairment, motor function, and spasticity, using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) test, TEMPA, and the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), respectively. Results showed that, in both groups, there were no changes in spasticity in the groups, but there was a significant improvement in FMA values after the rehabilitation programs. Regarding TEMPA scores, only Group 2 presented significant gains. The comparison of the MAS and FMA gains showed no differences between groups. However, group 2 showed greater gains in the two tasks of TEMPA. The results suggest that functional training using EMG feedback can have positive results in improving arm function. The decline was statistically significant and robust to changes in the time interval, inequality measures, and data sources. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Combretum leprosum is a species that is popularly used in Brazil as a healing agent to treat skin problems and lesions. In this study we investigated the possible potential of this extract to treat inflammatory and hyperproliferative skin conditions. Materials and methods: Classical models of skin inflammation such as TPA- and croton oil-induced mouse ear oedema were applied in order to verify the potential topical anti-inflammatory activity of the ethanolic extract from flowers of Combretum leprosum. Results: Topical application of ethanolic extract promoted a dose-dependent inhibition of phorbol ester-induced ear oedema, reduced myeloperoxidase activity and IL-6 tissue levels with inhibition comparable to dexamethasone (positive control). Histological and immunohistochemical analysis revealed that ethanolic extract also suppressed cell infiltration. Ethanolic extract altered inflammatory parameters on a chronic skin inflammation model induced by repeated applications of croton oil, decreasing ear oedema, epidermal hyperproliferation and cell infiltration. In addition, immunohistochemical analysis showed that the extract decreased PCNA expression on the epidermis. Conclusion: Taken together, these results suggest that the extract from flowers of Combretum leprosum could be considered as a new potential tool for the treatment of several skin inflammatory diseases since it reversed the skin inflammatory and hyperproliferative process in a very significant manner. Aim: To investigate the association between depression, the normative conditions of oral health and serotonin-transporter-linked promoter region (5-HTTLPR) polymorphisms in a community-dwelling elderly sample. Methods: Elderly adults living in a community ( n = 200) were submitted to an oral clinical examination. Depression was assessed using the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale. The 5-HTTLPR was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Associations between the biomarkers and clinical covariates were assessed by bivariate and multivariate statistical tests. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: The prevalence of dental caries, periodontal disease, edentulism and oral mucosal lesions was 51.2%, 20.8%, 58.0% and 21.5%, respectively. The prevalence of depression was 21.5%. A higher frequency of the S allele was recorded in older individuals with depression ( P = 0.017). The present findings showed no significant association between depression and the normative conditions of oral health. The observed allelic polymorphisms were 44% S and 56% L, respectively. Genotypic variants were 33.5% LL, 45.0% SL and 21.5% SS. Individuals carrying the SS genotype showed a significantly high prevalence of periodontal disease (prevalence ratio = 3.077, CI 95% = 1.008-9.393, P = 0.048). Conclusion: The present findings suggest that depressive community-dwelling older individuals did not show any association with alterations of oral health normative conditions. Background: Teas from the husk fiber of Cocos nucifera are used in the folk medicine to treat arthritis and other inflammatory processes. Some works show that some varieties have biological activities. However, one of the main variety of the species, C. nucifera var. typica, known in Brazil as “gigante”, was not studied yet. Thus, this study evaluates if this variety has the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities already reported in other varieties. Methods: C. nucifera aqueous crude extract (10, 50, and 100 mg/kg) and the reference drugs morphine (1 mg/kg) and acetylsalicylic acid (100 mg/kg) were evaluated in models of inflammation (formalin-induced licking and subcutaneous air pouch). The antioxidant activity was evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) photometric assay and compared with those of the standards (quercetin, rutin, and ascorbic acid). The extract was also screened against Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), in the agar diffusion method. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined by the broth micro-dilution assay. Activities of combinations of the extract and antibiotics (methicillin or vancomycin) against MRSA were evaluated using checkerboard assays. Results: The extract significantly inhibited the time that the animals spent licking the formalin-injected paws (second phase). The extract also inhibited the inflammatory process induced by subcutaneous carrageenan injection by reducing cell migration, protein extravasation, and TNF-α production. Additionally, the extract showed an antioxidant potential in vitro as good as standards in their antioxidant activity. The extract was active only against S. aureus and MRSA. MIC and the bactericidal concentrations were identical (1,024 μg/ml). The extract and methicillin acted synergistically against the clinical MRSA isolate, whereas an indifferent effect was detected when the extract was combined with vancomycin. Conclusions: The extract exhibits anti-inflammatory activity through the inhibition of the cell migration. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Pereskia grandifolia Haw. (Cactaceae), popularly known as “ora-pro-nobis” is well recognized in Brazilian traditional medicine as a diuretic agent, although no scientific data have been published to support this effect. The aim of this work is to evaluate the diuretic and hypotensive activities of the infusion (INFPG) and the ethanol extract (HEPG) of Pereskia grandifolia and possible mechanism of action. Materials and methods: The infusions (2.5–10%) and the HEPG (3–100mg/kg) were orally administered in a single dose or daily (for seven days) to rats. The urine excretion rate, pH, density, conductivity and content of Na+, K+, Cl− and HCO3 − were measured in the urine of saline-loaded animals. In collected serum samples the concentration of electrolytes, urea, creatinine, aldosterone, vasopressin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity were evaluated. The involvement of V2 vasopressin receptor in the diuretic activity and the hypotensive effect of HEPG were also determined. Results: Water excretion rate was significantly increased by HEPG, while the urinary K+ and Cl− excretion was significantly reduced in acute and prolonged treatment. The oral administration of the HEPG (30mg/kg) significantly reduced serum levels of vasopressin and the mean arterial pressure (MAP) in normotensive rats. All other evaluated parameters have not been affected by any treatment. Conclusion: The results showed that HEPG could present compound(s) responsible for aquaretic activities with no signs of toxicity, and this effect could involve a reduction in the arginine-vasopressin release. Abstract: A stimulatory effect of apigenin-6-C-β-fucopyranoside (1) on glucose uptake was observed when rat soleus muscle was incubated with 1, 10 and 100μM of this flavonoid glycoside. The presence of specific insulin signaling inhibitors, such as wortmannin, an inhibitor of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), RO318220, an inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC), PD98059, an inhibitor of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK), and HNMPA(AM)3, an insulin receptor tyrosine kinase activity inhibitor showed that apigenin-6-C-β-fucopyranoside triggers different metabolic pathways in skeletal muscle. The oral administration of crude extract, fractions and isolated flavonoids (apigenin-6-C-β-fucopyranoside (1) and apigenin-6-C-(2″-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl)-β-fucopyranoside (2)) from Averrhoa carambola leaves exhibited a potential hypoglycemic activity in hyperglycemic normal rats. Additionally, both flavonoids significantly increased the muscle and liver glycogen content after an acute treatment. The results indicate that A. carambola can be regarded as a potent antihyperglycemic agent with insulin secretagogue and insulin mimetic properties. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This population-based health survey was carried out in Florianopolis, Brazil, to assess the association between adult systolic blood pressure (SBP) and contextual income level, after controlling for potential individual-level confounders. A statistically significant negative association between SBP levels and contextual income was identified after adjusting for individual-level characteristics. SBP levels in the highest and in the intermediate tertiles of contextual income were 5.78 and 2.82mmHg lower, respectively, than that observed in the bottom tertile. The findings suggest an association between income area level and blood pressure, regardless of well-known individual-level hypertension risk factors. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Different techniques have been described for the treatment; however, all of them are invasive. Aim. This work studied the efficacy of micro-marsupialization for the treatment for mucoceles in paediatric patients. Design. A retrospective review was performed using the clinical records of patients aged between 0 and 18 years with a clinical diagnosis of mucocele. The following data were obtained: age, gender, location and size of the lesion, duration of mucocele development, and type of treatment and its results. Results. The mean age of the patients was 11.1 ± 3.95 years. Mucoceles were found in the lower lip (83.7%), buccal mucosa (11.6%), and tongue (4.7%). From the overall cohort of 86 cases, 33 were treated by micro-marsupialization, of which five developed a recurrence that required surgical excision. The other 53 cases were treated by surgical excision, and three of these had recurrent disease. No statistically significant difference was found between the treatment methods. Conclusions. Micro-marsupialization can be used to treat mucoceles in paediatric dentistry. It is simpler to perform, minimally invasive, requires no local infiltration of anaesthesia, has a lower postoperative complications rate, and is well-tolerated by patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim Matrix metalloproteinases ( MMPs) play a key role in the tissue destruction characteristic of chronic periodontitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of MMP and TIMP polymorphisms with chronic periodontitis in two populations. Material and Methods A total of 34 polymorphisms spanning 12 MMP and 2 TIMP genes were genotyped in 401 individuals from Brazil (99 cases with chronic periodontitis and 302 controls), and 274 individuals from the US (70 cases and 204 controls). Individuals were considered cases if presenting at least three teeth exhibiting sites of clinical attachment loss ≥5 mm in two different quadrants. Controls were characterized by absence of clinical attachment loss and no sites with probing depth >3 mm. MMP3 and TIMP1 mRNA expression was evaluated in healthy and diseased periodontal tissues. Results TIMP1 showed association with chronic periodontitis in the Brazilian population (for rs5906435, p = 0.0004), whereas MMP3 showed association in the US population (for rs679620, p = 0.0003; and rs650108, p = 0.002) and in the Brazilian population (for rs639752, p = 0.005). MMP3 and TIMP1 mRNA expression was significantly higher in diseased tissues when compared to control tissues. Conclusions Our results further support a role for variations in MMP3 in chronic periodontitis and report a novel association with TIMP1. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the extent and severity of periodontitis in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing the following three different treatment modalities: predialysis; continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD); and hemodialysis (HD); and to compare the findings with those from systemically healthy individuals. Material and Methods: Forty CAPD patients (mean age 52 ± 12 years), 40 HD patients (mean age 50 ± 10 years), 51 predialysis patients (mean age 54 ± 11 years) and 67 healthy individuals (mean age 50 ± 7 years) were examined. The periodontal examination included probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, bleeding on probing and presence of plaque. Patients with at least four sites with clinical attachment loss ≥ 6 mm were considered to have severe chronic periodontitis, and those with at least 30% of sites with clinical attachment loss ≥ 4 mm were considered to have generalized chronic periodontitis. Results: Predialysis and HD patients had significantly more sites with clinical attachment loss ≥ 6 mm than healthy individuals. The CAPD patients had similar periodontal condition to healthy subjects. There were significantly more cases of severe chronic periodontitis in predialysis and HD patients. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Caesalpinia pyramidalis Tul. (Fabaceae) is a plant found in the Northeast of Brazil that is popularly used to treat inflammation. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory disease for which abdominal pain is a relevant symptom. As there is no specific therapy for AP, we investigated the effect of the ethanol extract from the inner bark of C. pyramidalis (EECp) on the AP induced by common bile duct obstruction (CBDO) in rats. Material and methods: AP was induced in male Wistar rats (200–250g, n=6–8) through laparotomy and subsequent CBDO. Animals were euthanized after 6 (G6h) or 24h (G24h) of induction. In the G6h protocol, animals were pretreated with EECp (100–400mg/kg, p.o.) or vehicle (Tween 80; 0.2%) 1h before CBDO or sham surgery. For the G24h protocol, rats were pretreated with EECp (400mg/kg, 1h before CBDO or 1h before and 12h after CBDO) or vehicle. The following parameters were measured: inflammatory/oxidative (myeloperoxidase activity and malondialdehyde formation in the pancreas and lung, leukocyte counts in the blood and serum nitrate/nitrite), enzymatic (serum amylase and lipase levels) and nociceptive (abdominal hyperalgesia). Results: Induction of AP by CBDO significantly increased all the parameters evaluated in both G6h and G24h protocols when compared with the respective sham group. In the G6h protocol, the EECp pretreatment (400mg/kg) significantly reduced all these parameters, besides completely inhibiting abdominal hyperalgesia. The same profile of reduction was observed from two administrations of EECp in the G24h protocol, while one single dose of EECp was able to significantly reduce pancreatic MDA, serum lipase levels, leukocyte counts in the blood and abdominal hyperalgesia without affecting the other parameters in the G24h protocol. Furthermore, rutin was found in the EECp. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that EECp decreases inflammation, lipoperoxidation and hyperalgesia in CBDO-induced AP, making it of interest in future approaches to treat this condition. The purpose of this study was to compare repetition maximum performance and ratings of perceived exertion during resistance exercise sessions conducted at a low intensity (i.e., 20RM) and in different exercise orders. Twenty-one recreationally trained men performed two total body resistance exercise sessions in opposite orders; each exercise was performed for three sets with 2 minutes passive rest between sets and exercises. The results indicated significantly greater total repetitions for each exercise when performed near the beginning of a sequence and for the first set of each exercise, irrespective of the sequence. The ratings of perceived exertion, however, were not significantly different between sequences. In conclusion, repetition maximum performance for resistance exercise sessions conducted at a low intensity is significantly different based on exercise order. Therefore, when performing high repetitions with relatively low intensity loads, exercises should be prioritized based on individual needs and sports-specific movement patterns for greater volume and potential for the desired neuromuscular adaptations. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to assess the potential relationships between fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption and some oxidative stress markers in young adults, with particular emphasis on fibre and vitamin C intake. The study enrolled 246 healthy subjects (eighty-eight men and 158 women), with a mean age of 22 (sd 3) years and a mean BMI of 21·9 (sd 2·8) kg/m2. Dietary intake, anthropometry, blood pressure, lifestyle features and blood biochemical data were assessed with validated procedures. Those subjects in the highest tertile (T) of FV consumption ( ≥ 705 g/d) had statistically lower oxidised LDL (ox-LDL) concentrations as well as higher plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity (P for trend < 0·05), after adjusting for sex, age, energy intake, physical activity, smoking, BMI, vitamin supplement use and other confounding factors. Moreover, plasma ox-LDL concentrations showed a decreasing trend and TAC an increasing trend across tertiles of fibre (T3: ≥ 14 g/d) and vitamin C (T3: ≥ 150 mg/d) from FV intake, while GPx activity was positively associated with vitamin C intake (P for trend < 0·05). In conclusion, greater FV consumption was independently associated with reduced ox-LDL as well as increased TAC and GPx activity in healthy young adults, with dietary fibre and vitamin C from FV clearly being implicated in this beneficial relationship. The aim of the present study was to assess the caries experience of children aged 6 to 7 years old in a socially deprived suburban area of Brazil's Federal District, using the ICDAS II system and to investigate determinants of dental caries. The survey was carried out in six public schools by three calibrated examiners, on a sample of 835 children. ICDAS II codes had to be converted into dmf/DMF components at surface and tooth levels, resulting in unfamiliar caries variables, to enable some meaningful reporting of the findings. The prevalence of dental caries, including enamel and dentinal carious lesions, in primary teeth was 95.6% and in permanent teeth it was 63.7%. Mean values of dmf-t (enamel and dentinal lesions), dmf-t (dentine lesions), DMF-T and DMF-T indices were 6.9 ± 3.8, 3.2 ± 3.4, 1.7 ± 1.6 and 0.2 ± 0.5, respectively. Enamel carious lesions predominated in the dmf-t/s and DMF-T/S indices. Seven-year-old children had statistically significantly more enamel and dentine carious lesions in permanent teeth than 6-year-old children had. Using ICDAS II, the prevalence of dental caries in both dentitions was very high. In both dentitions, the decay component predominated, with hardly any restorations or extractions observed. The new ICDAS II system leads to overvaluation of the seriousness of dental caries experience and made reporting of outcomes cumbersome. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: An ethnopharmacological survey indicated that the leaves of Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. (Malpighiaceae), a medicinal species commonly found in the Brazilian Cerrado, can be used against gastroduodenal disorders, such as gastric ulcers and diarrhea. Aim of the study: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a methanolic extract of Byrsonima intermedia (MBI) leaves on gastric and duodenal ulcers and to assess the antimicrobial and antidiarrheal effects of this extract. Material and methods: The anti-ulcerogenic effect of MBI was investigated with different ulcerogenic agents in rodents (mice and rats), including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), HCl/ethanol, pyloric ligature, absolute ethanol, cysteamine and ischemia–reperfusion. The gastroprotective effect of MBI was assessed by analysing the volume of gastric juice, pH, total acidity, mucus, NO, sulfhydryl compound, vanilloid receptor, glutathione (GSH) levels, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in the gastric and duodenal mucosa. The gastric and duodenal healing effects of MBI were also evaluated during 7 or 14 days of treatment. The antidiarrheal action (measured by intestinal motility and diarrhea induced by castor oil) and anti-bacterial action of MBI against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Helicobacter pylori were also evaluated by microdilution methods. Results: The phytochemical profile from MBI indicated the presence of phenolic acids, flavan-3-ols, oligomeric proanthocyanidins, and flavonoids. MBI (500mg/kg, p.o.) significantly inhibited totally gastric and duodenal lesions (69%) and healed gastric (49% on 14 days) and duodenal lesions (45% on 7 and 14 days). The MBI exert gastroprotective action by participation of endogenous sulfhydryl compounds, vanilloid receptors and increase in GSH level to effective gastric and duodenal protection. MBI also displayed curative (42%) and preventive (49%) antidiarrheal effects by involvement of opiate receptors and also antimicrobial effects in vitro. Conclusions: Byrsonima intermedia leaves present gastroprotective, healing and antidiarrheal activities, supporting previous claims that its traditional use can treat gastrointestinal disorders. They found that a periodized resistance training intervention performed within the workplace improved different aspects of health and fitness in untrained men, thereby potentially providing other work-related benefits.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 102 adolescents, 51 with DM1 and 51 nondiabetics. Xerostomia was detected by asking a question about the sensation of having 'dry mouth', and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 was used to measure the impact of xerostomia on OHQoL. The clinical status was assessed by using decayed, missing or filled and Community Periodontal indices, and by evaluating oral manifestations; and the following salivary conditions were evaluated: stimulated salivary flow, pH, buffer capacity, total protein, amylase, urea, calcium, and glucose salivary concentrations. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the influence of clinical status and salivary conditions on xerostomia and the impact of xerostomia on the OHQoL of adolescents with DM1. Results: Clinical status and salivary conditions was shown to have no influence on the presence of xerostomia. Bivariate ( P = 0.00) and logistic regression ( P = 0.01) analysis showed a significant association between DM1 and xerostomia. Logistic regression analysis showed association between xerostomia ( P = 0.00) and OHQoL, and caries experience ( P = 0.03) and OHQoL. Conclusions: DM1 showed to be predictive of a high prevalence of xerostomia in adolescents. Caries experience and xerostomia showed to have a negative impact on the OHQoL of adolescents with DM1.
