Since March, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra (sildenafil) for marketing, the drug has enhanced the ability of countless men to achieve an erection, and presumably, their partners' sexual experience has improved as a result. Urologist Jennifer Berman believes some women may benefit more directly from Viagra, especially those women who because of hysterectomy or other pelvic surgery or as a result of chronic disease, such as diabetes or hypertension, cannot achieve orgasm. In a pilot study sponsored by the American Foundation of Urologic Disease, Berman enrolled 22 women, ages 25 to 41, who, since their surgery or the onset of their illness, had complained of diminished sexual sensation, poor lubrication, and difficulty in achieving orgasm. In Berman's study, the women reported the same side effects as men. Berman was recently named director of the Women's Sexual Health Clinic at the Boston University School of Medicine, Massachusetts and plans to continue her research on Viagra there.
