Many press reports have suggested that Islam is playing a more prominent role in what was a secular state. This is partly a consequence of a population shift. Thousands of Muslim refugees driven from rural and provincial communities by "ethnic cleansing" have moved into urban homes abandoned by those with the skills, resources and connections to get out and establish themselves abroad. In the process, they have shifted the ethnic, religious and cultural balance of Sarajevo. A question frequently asked of a visitor returning from Sarajevo is whether it would be better if U.N. Protection Force left. It is difficult to answer.

This article presents the author's experience of his visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Hercegovina. The exhilaration derives from the fortitude Sarajevo's inhabitants, their sense of humor, their continuing personal fastidiousness, and from the imaginative and prodigious measures that they and a few outsiders are taking to restore essential services. More than anything, it is a consequence of the people's determination to sustain their city's cosmopolitan nature and cultural life. One observes all this amid extraordinary physical destruction, privations and the maimings and deaths of many thousands from the continued shelling and sniping.

Although it has resonance in several parts of the world, it is indelibly associated with the war launched and directed by Slobodan Milosevic, President of Serbia, and Radovan Karadzic, President of the so-called Serbian Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, against Muslims and other non-Serbs.
