Using data from a number of summer surveys of the Chukchi Sea over the past decade, we investigate aspects in which the benthic fauna, sediment structure, and zooplankton there are related to circulation patterns and shelf hydrographic conditions. A flow speed map is constructed that reveals the major pathways on the shelf. Regions of enhanced flow speed are dictated by lateral constrictions--in particular, Bering Strait and Barrow and Herald Canyons--and by sloping topography near coastlines. For the most part, benthic epifaunal and macrofaunal suspension feeders are found in high flow regimes, while deposit feeders are located in regions of weaker flow. The major exceptions are in Bering Strait, where benthic sampling was underrepresented, and in Herald Canyon where the pattern is inexplicably reversed. Sediment grain size is also largely consistent with variations in flow speed on the shelf. Data from three biophysical surveys of the Chukchi Sea, carried out as part of the Russian-American Long-term Census of the Arctic program, reveal close relationships between the water masses and the zooplankton communities on the shelf. Variations in atmospheric forcing, particularly wind, during the three sampling periods caused significant changes in the lateral and vertical distributions of the summer and winter water masses. These water mass changes, in turn, were reflected in the amounts and species of zooplankton observed throughout the shelf in each survey. Our study highlights the close relationship between physical drivers (wind forcing, water masses, circulation, and sediment type) in the Chukchi Sea and the biological signals in the benthos and the plankton on a variety of time scales. Energy density of a prey item provides information about the nutrition of a predator. Here, we provide data on energy content of 24 common benthic taxa (18 epifauna and six infauna) from the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas. Mollusks (both bivalves and gastropods) and amphipods had the highest caloric content of the taxa investigated. In light of changing environmental conditions and benthic communities in the Arctic, we compared present-day caloric content of several taxa with measurements conducted for the same taxa in the 1970s. In most cases, caloric content did not differ between historic and present-day values but was higher in two out of seven comparisons for both formalin-preserved samples and frozen materials. We also examined the effect of preservation methods (frozen vs. formalin-preserved) on the caloric content for seven epifaunal taxa. In three of the seven taxa, formalin-preserved specimens had significantly higher energy densities than frozen specimens. These data should make investigators aware of the opportunities and also possible limitations of including energy density values derived in different decades and from different preservation types into their calculations, although more comprehensive and time-controlled studies are needed to generate possible corrections factors. Benthic infaunal biomass and abundance may be changing in Bering Sea communities. This study compared benthic infaunal biomass, abundance, and community composition southwest of St. Lawrence Island in an important forage area for benthic-feeding birds and mammals between 1970–1974 and 2006. Invertebrate biomass and abundance were significantly greater in 2006 than in 1970–1974 primarily due to high nuculid (Bivalvia) biomass and abundance that contributed 13.2% (biomass) and 8.5% (abundance) to differences in community structure between the sampling periods. This is in contrast to St. Lawrence Island Polynya studies conducted in the 1980s and 1990s that documented decreases in benthic biomass and abundance. Spatial scale of sampling, selective predation, a strong recruitment event, and/or sampling design may account for the difference in trends among the studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ocean currents, water masses, and seasonal sea ice formation contribute to determining relationships among the biota of the Bering and Chukchi seas. The Bering Sea communicates with the Chukchi Sea via northward advection of water, nutrients, organic matter, and plankton through Bering Strait. We used data from concurrent surveys of zooplankton, pelagic fishes and jellyfish, epibenthic fishes and invertebrates, and seabirds to identify faunal distribution patterns and environmental factors that are related to these faunal distributions within the US portions of the Chukchi Sea shelf and Bering Sea shelf north of Nunivak Island. Regional differences in late summer (August–September) distributions of biota largely reflected the underlying hydrography. Depth, temperature, salinity, stratification, and chlorophyll a , but less so sediment-related or nutrient-related factors, were related to the distributions of the assemblages (zooplankton: depth, salinity, stratification; pelagic fishes and jellyfish: depth, stratification, chlorophyll a ; epibenthic fishes and invertebrates: depth, temperature, salinity; seabirds: temperature, salinity, stratification). These six environmental factors that most influenced distributions of zooplankton, pelagic fishes/jellyfish, epibenthic fishes and invertebrate, and seabird assemblages likely can be simplified to three factors reflecting bottom depth, water mass, and their stratification and productivity (which are tightly linked in the study region). The assemblages were principally structured from nearshore to offshore and from south to north. The nearshore to offshore contrast usually was stronger in the south, where the enormous discharge of the Yukon River is more apparent and extends farther offshore, influencing zooplankton, pelagic fish/jellyfish, and seabird assemblages. Some assemblages overlapped spatially (e.g., seabird and zooplankton), indicating shared influential environmental factors or trophic linkages among assemblages. The gradients in assemblage composition were gradual for epibenthic taxa, abrupt for zooplankton taxa, and intermediate for pelagic fish/jellyfish and seabird taxa, implying that zooplankton assemblage structure is most strongly tied to water mass, epibenthic least, with the other two taxa intermediates. Three communities (i.e., cross-assemblage groupings) emerged based on maps of ordination axes and core use areas by taxa; one associated with Alaska Coastal Water (warmer, fresher, nutrient depauperate), second associated with Chirikov Basin and the southern Chukchi Sea (colder, saltier, nutrient rich), and third associated with the northern Chukchi shelf (colder and saltier but not as nutrient rich). Gradients in species composition occurred both within and between these communities. The Chirikov Basin/southern Chukchi Sea community was characterized by distinct zooplankton and seabird taxa, but was not strongly associated with distinct pelagic or epibenthic fish and invertebrate taxa. Although comprehensive data were only available for a single year and annual variation may affect the generality of our results, our comprehensive ecosystem survey approach yielded new insights into the ecological relationships (specifically, gradients in assemblage composition and identification of communities) of this Arctic region.
