Climate and land cover changes are key factors in river basins' management. This study investigates on the one hand 60-year (1960 to 2019) rainfall and temperature variability using station data combined with gridded data, and on the other hand land cover changes for the years 1990, 2005, and 2020 in the Sota catchment (13,410 km2, North Benin, West Africa). The climate period is different from the chosen land use change period due to the unavailability of satellite images. Standardized anomaly index, break points, trend analysis, and Thiessen's polygon were applied. Satellite images were processed and ground truthing was carried out to assess land cover changes. The analyses revealed a wet period from 1960 to 1972, a dry period from 1973 to 1987, and another wet period from 1988 to 2019. The annual rainfall decreases from the south to the north of the catchment. In addition, rainfall showed a non-significant trend over the study period, and no significant changes were identified between the two normals (1960–1989 and 1990–2019) at catchment scale, although some individual stations exhibited significant trends. Temperatures, in contrast, showed a significant increasing trend over the study period at catchment scale, with significant break points in 1978, 1990, and 2004 for Tmax, and 1989 for Tmin. An increase of 0.4 °C and 1.2 °C is noted, respectively, for Tmax and Tmin between the two normals. The study also revealed increases in agricultural areas (212.1%), settlements (76.6%), waterbodies (2.9%), and baresoil (52%) against decreases in woodland (49.6%), dense forest (42.2%), gallery forest (21.2%), and savanna (31.9%) from 1990 to 2020. These changes in climate and land cover will have implications for the region. Appropriate adaptation measures, including Integrated Water Resources Management and afforestation, are required. Data on the prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in the African general population are scarce, and a better understanding is urgently needed. Our study aimed to objectively determine the prevalence of, and factors associated with, SDB in a large sample in Benin, west Africa. In the Benin Society and Sleep (BeSAS) cross-sectional study, participants aged 25 years and older were recruited from both urban and rural areas. Rural participants were recruited from Tanve, a village located 200 km north of Cotonou, and urban participants were recruited from Cotonou. The participants underwent respiratory polygraphy at home using a type-3 device that measures airflow through a nasal pressure sensor, respiratory effort (thoracic movement), and pulse oximetry. Clinical and morphometric data were also collected. SDB severity categories were defined according to the apnoea–hypopnoea index (AHI), with mild-to-severe SDB (AHI ≥5/h), moderate-to-severe SDB (AHI ≥15/h), and severe SDB (AHI ≥30/h). The study was completed from April 4, 2018 to Jan 15, 2021. Of 2909 participants recruited in the BeSAS study, 2168 (74·5%) underwent respiratory polygraphy. For the 1810 participants with complete polygraphic data (mean age 46 years, SD 15; 1163 [64·2%] women), the prevalence of mild-to-severe SDB (AHI ≥5/h) was 43·2% (95% CI 40·9–45·5), of moderate-to-severe SDB (AHI ≥15/h) was 11·6% (10·2–13·1), and of severe SDB (AHI ≥30/h) was 2·7% (2·0–3·5). Factors independently associated with SDB were advanced age, male sex, large neck circumference, abdominal obesity, overweight or obesity, and snoring. After multivariable adjustment, severe SDB was independently associated with hypertension in women (odds ratio 3·99, 95% CI 1·04–15·33; p trend =0·044), but not in men (odds ratio 0·67, 0·22–2·05; P trend =0·63). The BeSAS study provides the first large-scale objective evaluation of SDB prevalence and associated factors in Africa. This study aimed at characterizing breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices in a food‐insecure area of Benin and identifying factors associated with these practices. A cross‐sectional study was conducted in the districts of Bopa and Houéyogbé among n = 360 mother–child pairs. Children aged 0–17 months were considered. Socioeconomic characteristics among children and mothers, Breastfeeding on demand, Breastfeeding frequency during children illness, and Positioning and Attachment of children while breastfeeding were assessed using semi‐structured interviews and observations. Qualitative 24‐hr recalls were administered to mothers to compute WHO recommended complementary feeding practices indicators namely minimum dietary diversity (MDD), minimum meal frequency (MMF), and minimum acceptable diet (MAD) among 6–17 months old children (n = 232). Associations between each feeding practice and mothers' socioeconomic characteristics were tested using multivariate generalized linear models. Breastfeeding on demand and good positioning and attachment for breastfeeding rates were 59% and 66%, respectively. Only 26% of mothers used to increase breastfeeding frequency when their children were ill. The proportions of children who met MDD, MMF, and MAD were 51%, 75%, and 44%, respectively. Children living in Houéyogbé were less likely to be breastfed on demand compared with those living in Bopa; however, they had better breastfeeding frequency during illness and meal frequency. Socioeconomic factors with significant association with breastfeeding practices were children age and sex and mothers' education, ethnicity, and employment status. Complementary feeding practices were positively associated with children's age but not with other socioeconomic characteristics. Breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices were almost suboptimal or medium and still need to be improved through well designed nutrition intervention program including nutrition education. Introduction: To overcome the problems of periodic re-impregnation of mosquito nets and low rates of treatment, the commune of Aguegues was chosen to evaluate the effects of Olyset® nets on malaria transmission and against An. gambiae. Methods: 87 old Olyset® nets installed five years ago were identified in the village 'Akpadon'. 10 untreated nets were installed in 10 structures of type "a bedroom and parlour" in the village 'Akodji'. Four rooms without nets were identified in the village 'Donoukpa'. Entomological and epidemiological evaluations were conducted during the May to October 2011. 24 sessions of capture or 2088 men-nights resulted in the capture of 30,608 mosquitoes. Results: The entrance of anopheles was significantly reduced in the village with Olyset® nets. 45% of mosquitoes captured inside rooms with Olyset® nets were found dead after 24 hrs of obser-vation. Overall, parasitemia was very low in the treated village (4.52%). 18 (4.64%) cases of malaria fever were from Akpadon with 7.5% positive blade smear, 29 (10.98%) were from Akodji with 8.37% positive blade smear, and 80 (95.23%) come from Donoukpa with 38.09% positive blade smear. The Olyset® nets and untreated net were adjusted hemoglobin levels. Conclusion: Olyset® net had a very high knock down effect and is an alternative in malaria control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
