This article focuses on a study to investigate social cognitive determinants of the intention to participate in an asthma self-management program. Asthma self-management programs teach asthmatic patients better self-care. The attitude, social influence and self-efficacy model states that the intention to perform a behavior is determined by a set of proximal social cognitive determinants. Attitude refers to the sum of positive and negative beliefs. Social influence is the perceived social pressure a person may feel to perform the particular behavior. The study was conducted in Leuven, Belgium.
