In the psychology and educational science programs at Ghent University, only 36.1% of the new incoming students in 2011 and 2012 passed all exams. Despite availability of information, many students underestimate the scientific character of social science programs. Statistics courses are a major obstacle in this matter. Not all enrolling students master the basic mathematical skills needed to pass statistics courses. Therefore, we propose a test that measures these skills. Our aim is to examine the predictive validity of the test with regard to the statistics course and also as to overall academic success. The results indicate that a test of very basic mathematics skills helps identify at-risk students at and before the start of the academic year. The practical implications of these results are discussed. The test aids the efficient use of means for remedial interventions and supports future students in choosing a higher education program that suits their potential.

Background: Paediatric palliative care (PPC) aims to improve children's quality of life, but this outcome is rarely measured in clinical care. PPC is provided in Belgium through six transmural paediatric liaison teams (PLTs) ensuring continuity of care for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions (LLC/LTC). This study aims to measure the quality of life (QoL) of children with LLC/LTC followed-up by PLTs and the QoL of their parents. Methods: During interviews, an original socio demographic questionnaire, the Children palliative outcome scale—version 2 (CPOS-2), the Fragebogen für Kinder und Jugendliche zur Erfassung der gesundheitsbezogenen Lebensqualität (KINDL) and the Quality of life in life-threatening Illness-Family caregiver (QOLLTI-F) were filled in by PLT members. Statistics were used to investigate significant differences between scores. Results were discussed and interpreted with six PLTs. Results: 73 children aged 1–18 were included in the study. Especially for items focusing on emotional items, children reported their QoL as higher than their parents did. The QoL scores were not significantly associated with the child's condition's severity. Conclusions: This study provides, for the first time, an overview of the QoL of children and parents followed-up by PLTs in Belgium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Pronounced underuse of radiotherapy (RT) in muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is reported. This study aims to assess the awareness about the role of RT in different MIBC settings and see whether this has increased since 2017. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the bladder cancer guidelines of the EAU, ESMO, NCCN, NICE, and AUA/ASCO/ASTRO/SUO, focusing on the role of RT in MIBC. In 2017, we evaluated the use of RT in MIBC in Belgium. This raised awareness about the indications of RT in different MIBC settings. Here, we present a retrospective pattern of care analysis of the RT use for MIBC patients at our center from January 2012 until December 2021. Frequency of RT use, patient, disease and treatment characteristics were compared between two 5-year periods (2012– 2016 and 2017– 2021). Results: Review of the guidelines suggested that RT can be used as a treatment option in most MIBC settings. However, differences between guideline recommendations existed and high-level evidence was often lacking. Overall, 221 unique MIBC patients received RT at our center. RT use for MIBC was 39% higher in the second 5-year period (Between the same periods, the number of new MIBC registrations increased with 26%). The most pronounced increase, ie, 529%, was observed in the primary setting and was in parallel with patient preference becoming the main indication for RT. Participation in clinical trials seems to have had an important impact on the frequency of RT use in the adjuvant and metastatic setting. Conclusion: We provide a critical overview of the RT indications in MIBC as recommended by the international guidelines. Increased awareness about RT as a treatment option in MIBC seems to have an impact on the treatment choice in clinical practice, as was observed in our tertiary center. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To assess the face and content validity, acceptability and feasibility of a French version of the Children's Palliative Outcome Scale (CPOS). Background: Instruments in French used to measure outcomes in pediatric palliative care are lacking. Methods: After forward-backward translation of the 12-item English CPOS to French, we conducted a qualitative pilot study. During semi structured interviews among children and parents, we used the CPOS, the Schedule for the Evaluation of Individual Quality of Life interview guide (SEIQoL) and the Quality of Life in Life-threatening Illness-Family Carer questionnaire (QOLLTI-F), in addition to three expert meetings with PLTs. Results: Fourteen children and adolescents (8-18 years) with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions cared for at home, in hospital or in respite care services, 19 parents, and 9 members of 4 pediatric liaison teams (PLTs) providing palliative care in a Belgian francophone region were included in the study. No families refused to participate. All children with verbal capacities chose to be interviewed in the presence of their parents and a PLT member. The children valued being given the opportunity to share their experiences. New QOL dimensions pertaining to social, emotional, and administrative health-care related issues were added to the original version of the 12-item CPOS, leading to a 22-item CPOS-2. Discussion: The CPOS-2 was perceived as relevant and easy to use by the principal stakeholders. Exercise is recommended for prostate cancer (PCa) patients treated with androgen deprivation therapy. The goal of the study was to assess the availability of hospital‐based rehabilitation resources and national practice patterns for PCa in Belgium. A questionnaire was conducted with rehabilitation physical therapists in all Belgian hospital with urology and rehabilitation departments. Practice patterns were compared with the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines. PCa prevalence data were obtained from the Belgian Cancer Registry and attitude of physicians towards physical activity was documented. We included 98 Belgian hospitals. Only 25% of the PCa population had access to PCa‐specific programmes. The occupancy rate of PCa‐specific rehabilitation slots was 69%. The main perceived barriers to organise PCa‐specific rehabilitation were existence of general programmes (40%) and low referrals (18%). All PCa programmes consisted of aerobic and resistance exercise and 62% included flexibility. Minimal criteria for frequency and duration per session were followed in 83%. The majority (89%) of physicians believed in the positive effects of supervised exercise programmes. The majority of PCa programmes follow the evidence‐based guidelines except for flexibility exercises. Background. External beam radiotherapy is an excellent treatment for patients with prostate cancer (PC). Assessing long-term radiotherapy-induced toxicity is important. We evaluated the impact of implementing different rectal dose volume constraints (DVC) on late rectal and urinary toxicity. Material and methods. Six hundred and thirty-seven PC patients were treated with high-dose intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in the primary (median dose of 78 Gy to the prostate) or postoperative setting [median dose of 74 (adjuvant) and 76 Gy (salvage) to the prostatic bed]. Three groups were defined according to different DVC applied over time. The incidence of late rectal and urinary toxicity was evaluated. Three-year actuarial risk estimations of grade 2-3 rectal and urinary toxicity were calculated (Kaplan-Meier statistics). Results. Median follow-up was five years. Overall, the incidence of late grade 3 and 2 rectal toxicity was 1% and 11%. The calculated three-year actuarial risk of developing late grade ≥ 2 rectal toxicity decreased from 16% to 7% and 5% for patients in Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3, respectively (p < 0.001). Respectively, 17 (4%) and 98 (24%) patients developed grade 3 and 2 late urinary toxicity in the primary setting. In the postoperative setting, 15 (6%) and 62 (26%) patients developed grade 3 and 2 urinary toxicity, respectively. The three-year actuarial risk of developing late ≥ grade 2 urinary toxicity in primary- and postoperative-treated patients was 22% and 23%, respectively. This was not significantly different between the three groups. Conclusion. The majority of patients developed no or only moderate rectal toxicity after high-dose IMRT for PC. Objectives The purpose of this controlled study is to document articulation and oromyofunctional behavior in children seeking orthodontic treatment. In addition, relations between malocclusions, articulation, and oromyofunctional behavior are studied. Materials and Methods The study included 56 children seeking orthodontic treatment. The control group, consisting of 54 subjects matched for age and gender, did not undergo orthodontic intervention. To determine the impact of the occlusion on speech, the Oral Health Impact Profile was used. Speech characteristics, intelligibility and several lip and tongue functions were analyzed using consensus evaluations. Results A significant impact of the occlusion on speech and more articulation disorders for/s,n,l,t/were found in the subjects seeking orthodontic treatment. Several other phenomena were seen more often in this group, namely more impaired lip positioning during swallowing, impaired tongue function at rest, mouth breathing, open mouth posture, lip sucking/biting, anterior tongue position at rest, and tongue thrust. Moreover, all children with a tongue thrust showed an anterior tongue position at rest. Conclusions Children seeking orthodontics have articulatory and oromyofunctional disorders. To what extent a combined orthodontic and logopaedic treatment can result in optimal oral health (i.e. perfect dentofacial unit with perfect articulation) is subject for further multidisciplinary research. The optimal management of patients with oligorecurrent prostate cancer (PCa) is unknown. There is growing interest in metastasis-directed therapy (MDT) for this population. The objective was to assess cost-utility from a Belgian healthcare payer's perspective of MDT and delayed androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in comparison with surveillance and delayed ADT, and with immediate ADT. A Markov decision-analytic trial-based model was developed, projecting the results over a 5-year time horizon with one-month cycles. Clinical data were derived from the STOMP trial and literature. Treatment costs were derived from official government documents. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses showed that MDT is cost-effective compared to surveillance (ICER: €8393/quality adjusted life year (QALY)) and immediate ADT (dominant strategy). The ICER is most sensitive to utilities in the different health states and the first month MDT cost. At a willingness-to-pay threshold of €40,000 per QALY, the cost of the first month MDT should not exceed €8136 to be cost-effective compared to surveillance. The Markov-model suggests that MDT for oligorecurrent PCa is potentially cost-effective in comparison with surveillance and delayed ADT, and in comparison with immediate ADT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although continuity of care in paediatric palliative care (PPC) is considered to be an essential element of quality of care, it's implementation is challenging. In Belgium, five paediatric liaison teams (PLTs) deliver palliative care. A Royal Decree issued in 2010 provides the legal framework that defines the PLTs' missions, as ensuring continuity of curative and palliative care between the hospital and home for children diagnosed with life-limiting conditions. This national study describes how PLTs ensure continuity of care by describing their activities and the characteristics of the children they cared for from 2010 to 2014. Methods: Thematic analysis of open-ended questions was performed and descriptive statistics of aggregated data issued from annual reports, collected by the Belgian Ministry of Public Health through the Cancer Plan was used. A review panel of PLT members discussed the results and contributed to their interpretation. Results: Between 2010 and 2014, 3607 children and young adults (0–21 years) were cared for by the 5 Belgian PLTs (mean of 721/per year). Of these children, 50% were diagnosed with an oncological disease, 27% with a neurological or metabolic disease. Four hundred and twenty eight (428) children had died. For 51% of them, death took place at home. PLT activities include coordination; communication; curative and palliative care; education; research and fundraising. Different perceptions of what constitutes a palliative stage, heterogeneity in reporting diagnosis and the current lack of specific valid indicators to report PPC activities were found. Conclusion: PLTs are offering highly individualised, flexible and integrated care from diagnosis to bereavement in all care settings. The article reports that Belgium approved a law on December 12, 2013 that allows euthanasia for children without any age limit. Topics discussed include the Netherlands and Belgium's law decriminalizing euthanasia under certain conditions including a voluntary and repeated request from a patient with unbearable suffering and the 2013 Belgian law allowing terminally ill children to seek euthanasia from the age of 12 years with required full parental consent up to the age of 16.

Purpose: Improved outcome is reported after surgery or external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) plus androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for patients with lymph node (LN) positive (N1) prostate cancer (PC). Surgical series have shown that pathologic (p)N1 PC does not behave the same in all patients. The aim of this study was to perform a matched-case analysis to compare the outcome of pN1 and pN0 PC after high-dose EBRT plus ADT.Methods and Materials: Radiation therapy up to 80 Gy was delivered to the prostate with a minimal dose of 45 Gy to the pelvis for pN1 patients. After matching, Kaplan-Meier statistics were used to compare the 5-year biochemical and clinical relapse-free survival (bRFS and cRFS), prostate cancer-specific survival (PCSS), and overall survival (OS). Acute and late rectal and urinary toxicity was evaluated.Results: Sixty-nine pN1 PC patients were matched 1:1 with pN0 PC patients. The median follow-up time was 60 months. The 5-year bRFS and cRFS for pN1 versus pN0 PC patients were 65% ± 7% versus 79% ± 5% (P=.08) and 70% ± 6% versus 83% ± 5% (P=.04) respectively. No significant difference was found in bRFS or cRFS rates between low volume pN1 (≤2 positive LNs) and pN0 patients. The 5-year PCSS and OS were comparable between pN1 and pN0 PC patients: PCSS: 92% ± 4% versus 93% ± 3% (P=.66); OS: 82% ± 5% versus 80% ± 5% (P=.58). Severe toxicity was rare for both groups, although pN1 patients experienced significantly more acute grade 2 rectal toxicity.Conclusion: Primary EBRT plus 2 to 3 years of ADT is a legitimate treatment option for pN1 PC patients, especially those with ≤2 positive LNs, and this with bRFS and cRFS rates comparable to those in pN0 PC patients. For pN1 PC patients with >2 positive LNs, bRFS and cRFS are worse than in pN0 patients, but even in this subgroup, long-term disease control is obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Aims: To compare acute gastrointestinal and genitourinary toxicity for patients positioned with an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) and patients positioned with kilovoltage cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) during postoperative prostate radiotherapy. Materials and methods: Between 1999 and April 2010, 196 prostate cancer patients were referred for postoperative salvage radiotherapy. Patient position was corrected using EPID (1999 to December 2006, n =116) or CBCT (January 2007 to present, n =80). The treatment technique, number of beams, dose prescription, dose computation algorithm and planning target volume margins were not altered over time. Grade 1–3 acute gastrointestinal and genitourinary toxicity were compared between the EPID group and the CBCT group. Results: The incidence of grade 1 and 2 genitourinary toxicity was significantly reduced by 17 and 14%, respectively, in the CBCT group compared with the EPID group (P <0.05). This was mainly attributed to a decrease in the following grade 1 symptoms: frequency (P <0.05), nocturia (P =0.06) and urgency (P =0.07). Grade 2 incontinence (P =0.06) and frequency (P =0.06) were lower in the CBCT group. Grade 3 genitourinary toxicity was comparably low (EPID 3% versus CBCT 1%). There was no significant difference in gastrointestinal grade 1–2 toxicity between both groups. No grade 3 gastrointestinal toxicity was observed.
