Background: To evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of nurses regarding non-pharmacologic therapies for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Methods: This cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study enrolled nurses at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Beijing, China) between September 2022 and October 2022. Correlations between knowledge, attitude and practice scores were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. Factors associated with knowledge, attitude and practice scores were identified by multivariable linear regression. Based on a cross-sectional questionnaire survey, this study designed a questionnaire according to the Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Dementia in China, and randomly selected nurses from Peking Union Medical College Hospital to fill in the questions through the Wen-Juan-Xing online platform from September 2022 to October 2022. Results: The analysis included 210 nurses (202 females). The average knowledge, attitude and practice scores were 11.06±2.61 (total score: 18), 53.51±5.81 (total score: 60) and 64.66 ± 10.35 (total score: 80) points, respectively. Knowledge score was positively correlated with attitude score (r = 0.416, P < 0.001) and practice score (r = 0.389, P < 0.001); attitude and practice scores were also positively correlated (r = 0.627, P < 0.001). Multivariable analysis demonstrated that age ≥ 40 years-old (vs. ≤30 years-old) was associated with higher knowledge score (β = 1.48, 95% confidence interval [95%CI] = 0.42–2.54, P = 0.006). Age ≥ 40 years-old (β = 1.43, 95%CI = 0.35–2.51, P = 0.010 vs. ≤30 years-old) and bachelor's degree or higher (β = 1.11, 95%CI = 0.12–2.10, P = 0.028 vs. college degree or lower) were associated with higher practice score. Conclusions: Older age and higher education level were associated with higher knowledge, attitude and/or practice scores. The findings of this study may help guide the development and implementation of education and training programs to improve the management of BPSD by nurses in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To investigate the current status and influencing factors of the core competencies of emergency specialty nurses in Beijing. Methods From July to December 2021, a survey was conducted among emergency specialty nurses in Beijing using tools including the basic information questionnaire, the Registered Nurse Core Competency Scale, the Psychological Resilience Scale, and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. Single-factor analysis and multi-factor logistic regression analysis were used to explore the influencing factors of core competencies. Results A total of 224 emergency specialty nurses were surveyed, and 213 valid questionnaires were collected, with an effective recovery rate of 95.09%. The total score of core competencies of emergency specialty nurses was (206.15 ± 13.64) points, and the item average score was (3.55 ± 0.24) points. The logistic regression analysis showed that age, education, professional title, professional interest, hospital level, and job satisfaction were six variables that influenced the core competencies of emergency specialty nurses (P < 0.05). Comparing the latter with the former, such as the nurses aged ≤25 years old vs. those aged > 25 years old, with the college degree vs. the bachelor' s degree or higher, with the title of nurse vs. the title of nurse in charge or above, with low interest in the specialty vs. a certain interest, working in a second-class hospital vs. a tertiary hospital, with dissatisfied job satisfaction vs. basically satisfied or above, the latter has a higher level of core competencies than the former, and the risk ratios varied from 1.178 to 1.672 (P < 0.05). Conclusions The core competencies of emergency specialty nurses in Beijing were at a high level and influenced by factors such as age, education, title, professional interest, hospital level, and job satisfaction. Relevant departments should provide continuous professional training and development opportunities for newly recruited emergency specialty nurses, improve the working environment of the emergency department, and enhance the professional interest and internal satisfaction of emergency specialty nurses. Abstract: Objective: To collect health information of Beijing middle-aged registered nurses during menopause. Methods: We distributed self-administered questionnaires to 2100 registered nurses aged 40–55 from 20 hospitals in Beijing. The objects of interest were selected by cluster sampling. Results: A total of 1686 questionnaires met the criteria and were used for statistical analysis. The average natural menopause age was 48.68±3.61 years old. We determined that 37.83% of the objects had modified Kupperman Menopausal Index (KMI) scores ≥15. The top three menopause symptoms were fatigue (82.72%), irritability (70.24%), and arthralgia/myalgia (69.55%); hot flashes ranked eleventh (30.83%). Conclusions: A total of 37.83% Beijing middle-aged registered nurses had menopause syndrome, and the top three symptoms were fatigue, irritability, and arthralgia/myalgia. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background Much of China lacks well-developed services for people with schizophrenia and their families, and most of the existing services focus on hospitals. There is a need for culturally sensitive family treatments offered by nurses. Aims To conduct a longitudinal experimental study examining the effect of patient and family education in a sample of Chinese people with schizophrenia. Method A randomised controlled trial was conducted in a large hospital with a sample of 101 patients with schizophrenia and their families. Data were collected at admission and at discharge, and then at 3 and 9 months after discharge. The intervention group received family education, and data on their knowledge about schizophrenia, symptoms, functioning, psychosocial behaviour, relapse and medication adherence were collected and compared with the control group. Results There was a significant improvement in knowledge about schizophrenia in the experimental group and a significant difference in symptom scores and functioning at 9 months after discharge. Patients who were non-adherent to medication regimens were more likely to relapse. Conclusions Family education on schizophrenia by nurses in China was effective in improving knowledge and promoting improvement in patients' symptoms. Declaration of interest None. The article comments on a paper which examines the meaning of caring from the perspective of cancer patients in Beijing, China. The author stresses that the study is important as a deeper understanding of what caring means to patients with cancer is warranted. She asserts that the researchers do not consider the resource in which the caring relationship occurs. She emphasizes that the idea that nurses and people with cancer share the same understanding of the need of patients is unfounded.
