Restricted by unfavorable external environments and weak operational capabilities, social enterprises often fail. However, the issue of whether and how learning from failure affects social enterprise growth performance has not yet been sufficiently focused and effectively addressed. Based on resource orchestration theory, this study analyzes the mechanism between learning from failure and social enterprise growth performance using a two-stage sample of 189 Chinese social enterprises from Shandong and Beijing. We also explore the moderating role of failure normalization, which supplements research gaps and buffers Chinese social enterprise growth. The results show that learning from failure is significantly and positively related to social enterprise growth performance. Resource orchestration intervenes in the link between learning from failure and social enterprise growth performance. In addition, the contingency impact of failure normalization influences learning from failure and social enterprise growth. Our study underscores the significance of resource orchestration in the integration and application of commercial and social elements in social enterprises to achieve the co-development of economic and social performance. The findings not only reveal the mediating mechanism and contextual conditions under which learning from failure drives the growth performance of social enterprises but also provide insights into the survival and development of Chinese social enterprises in the context of economic transformation. Pigment gallstones are not uncommon among patients with chronic haemolytic anaemia. But their clinical characteristics have not been described in detail and not been directly compared with the general gallstone population. Patients at Peking Union Medical College Hospital with haemolytic anaemia and subsequent gallstones from January 2012 to December 2022 were included. Cases were matched (1:2) based on age, sex and location of stones to randomly select non-anaemia patients with gallstones (controls). Screening 899 cases of gallstones, we finally included 76 cases and 152 controls. Total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) for cases were 3.02 ± 0.98 mmol/L, 0.89 ± 0.30 mmol/L and 1.58 ± 0.70 mmol/L, respectively, significantly lower than those in the control group (all p < 0.001). TC and HDL were both lower than the normal range, but triglyceride and LDL were within the normal range. Multiple stones were significantly more common for cases (n = 59, 78%) than for controls (n = 44, 29%, p < 0.001). The mean diameter of the maximal gallstone was 1.2 ± 0.6 cm and 1.5 ± 1.0 cm for cases and controls (p = 0.120), respectively. Stones in the elderly (p = 0.002 for univariate analysis, and 0.001 for multivariate analysis) and stones in the bile duct (p = 0.005 for univariate analysis, and 0.009 for multivariate analysis) were found to occur in a shorter period after anaemia. The lipid profile of haemolytic anaemia with gallstones was distinct, low TC, low HDL, and increased-to-normal LDL, compared with the general gallstone population. Patients with haemolytic anaemia were recommended an abdominal ultrasound if aged older than 50 years, with more frequent follow-up visits. Clinical characteristics of gallstones following chronic haemolytic anaemia were described and compared with the general gallstone population. The lipid profiles were distinctly different between the patients with gallstones following chronic haemolytic anaemia and the general gallstone population. Elder patients were complicated with gallstones in a shorter period after anaemia and thus were recommended an abdominal ultrasound if aged older than 50 years, with more frequent follow-up visits. This study aimed to assess the early and mid-term results of the modified Doty's technique compared with the traditional Doty's technique in patients with congenital supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS). We retrospectively included 73 consecutive SVAS patients in Beijing and Yunnan Fuwai Hospitals between 2014 and 2021. Patients were divided into the modified technique (n = 9) and the traditional technique group (n = 64). The modified technique involves altering the right head of the symmetrical inverted pantaloon-shaped patch into an asymmetrical triangular form to prevent compression of the right coronary artery ostium. The primary safety outcome was in-hospital surgery-related complications and the primary effectiveness outcome was re-operation at follow-up. The Mann–Whitney U test and Fisher's exact test were used to test the group difference. The median age at operation was 50 months (IQR 27.0–96.0). Twenty-two (30.1%) of the patients were female. The median follow-up was 23.5 months (IQR 3.0–46.0). No in-hospital surgery-related complications and follow-up re-operation occurred in the modified technique group, but the traditional technique group had 14 (21.8%) surgery-related complications and 5 (7.9%) re-operation. Patients with the modified technique had a well-developed aortic root and no aortic regurgitation occurred. As the largest groundwater drainage region in China, the per capita water resources in the North China Plain (NCP) account for only one-seventh of the country's available water resources. Currently, the NCP is experiencing a serious water shortage due to the overexploitation of groundwater resources and a subsequent series of natural disasters. Thus, accurate regional assessments and effective water resource management policies are of critical importance. To accomplish this phenomenon, the daily terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) over the NCP is calculated from the combination of the GNSS vertical deformation sequences (seasonal items) and GRACE (trend items). The groundwater storage anomaly (GWSA) in the NCP is obtained by subtracting the canopy water, soil water, and snow water equivalent components from the TWSA. The inversion results of this study are verified by comparisons with the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) data products. The elevated annual amplitude areas are located in Beijing and Tianjin, and the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), root mean square error (RMSE), and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) between the two GWSA results are 0.67, 4.01 cm, and 0.61, respectively. This indicates that the methods proposed in this study are reliable. Finally, the groundwater drought index was calculated for the period from 2011 to 2021, and the results showed that 2019 was the driest year, with a drought severity index value of −0.12, indicative of slightly moderate drought conditions. Objective: We aimed to establish a standardized procedure for white light gastroscopy (WLG) to screen gastric lesions including early gastric cancer (EGC) in China and to verify its efficacy and feasibility in clinical practice. Methods: A standardized WLG procedure for outpatients at nine tertiary hospitals in Beijing was established. Clinical information of the participants and details of the endoscopic procedures were recorded. Results: A total of 1051 participants were enrolled in a baseline conventional endoscopic survey between March 2014 and December 2015, while 2156 patients were enrolled in the standardized WLG operation from January 2016 to June 2017. The procedure time of the standardized procedure was significantly longer than that of the baseline conventional procedure (P = 0.003). More images were obtained during the standardized procedure compared with the baseline conventional procedure (P < 0.001). The overall detection rate of gastric lesions in the standardized procedure group was significantly higher than that in the baseline procedure group (52.5% vs 38.4%, P < 0.01). The satisfaction scores of both participants and endoscopists in the standardized procedure group were significantly higher than in the baseline procedure group. Conclusions: Compared with the conventional procedure, standardized WLG procedure significantly improves the detection rate of gastric lesions as well as the satisfaction score of participants and endoscopists despite its longer procedure time. Tissue diagnosis of biliary stricture by endoscopy sampling can provide excellent specificity but insufficient sensitivity. For patients with suspected malignant biliary stricture (MBS) but non-malignant was reported in endoscopy tissue samples, we constructed a nomogram to predict malignancy and improve the overall diagnostic performance. Patients and Methods: 232 patients with suspected MBS and underwent endoscopy tissue sampling from January 2017 to December 2019 were included, among which 123 patients' endoscopy tissue samples were classified as non-malignant (including atypical, negative for malignancy, and nondiagnostic). Demographics, serum markers, radiological and sampling results of these 123 patients were collected to construct a nomogram using multivariate analysis. Results: The nomogram was developed based on bilirubin, CA19-9, radiological result, and atypical sampling results and provided an AUC of 0.863 (95% CI 0.795– 0.930) for predicting MBS. The specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of endoscopy tissue diagnosis were 100.00%, 59.90%, and 68.53%, respectively. With the nomogram added, the overall diagnosis specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy were 95.24%, 89.20%, and 90.23%, respectively. Conclusion: The nomogram can predict malignancy in patients whose endoscopy tissue diagnoses were non-malignant. The overall diagnostic performance was improved with the nomogram added. Background: Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) play an essential role in tropospheric atmospheric chemical reactions. There are few studies conducted on BVOCs emission of dominant forest species in the Jing-Jin-Ji area of China. Based on the field survey, forest resources data and the measured standard emission factors, the Guenther model developed in 1993 (G93) was applied in this paper to estimate the emission of BVOCs from several dominant forest species (Platycladus orientalis, Quercus variabilis, Betula platyphylla, Populus tomentosa, Pinus tabuliformis, Robinia pseudoacacia, Ulmus pumila, Salix babylonica and Larix gmelinii) in the Jing-Jin-Ji area in 2017. Then the spatiotemporal emission characteristics and atmospheric chemical reactivity of these species were extensively evaluated. Results: The results showed that the total annual BVOCs emission was estimated to be 70.8 Gg C·year− 1, consisting 40.5 % (28.7 Gg C·year− 1) of isoprene, 36.0 % (25.5 Gg C·year− 1) of monoterpenes and 23.4 % (16.6 Gg C·year− 1) of other VOCs. The emissions from Platycladus orientalis, Quercus variabilis, Populus tomentosa and Pinus tabulaeformis contributed 56.1 %, 41.2 %, 36.0 % and 31.1 %, respectively. The total BVOCs emission from the Jing-Jin-Ji area accounted for 61.9 % and 1.8 % in summer and winter, respectively. Up to 28.8 % of emission was detected from Chengde followed by Beijing with 24.9 %, that mainly distributed in the Taihang Mountains and the Yanshan Mountains. Additionally, the Robinia pseudoacacia, Populus tomentosa, Quercus variabilis, and Pinus tabulaeformis contributed mainly to BVOCs reaction activity. Conclusions: The BVOCs emission peaked in summer (June, July, and August) and bottomed out in winter (December, January, and February). Chengde contributed the most, followed by Beijing. Platycladus orientalis, Quercus variabilis, Populus tomentosa, Pinus tabulaeformis and Robinia pseudoacacia represent the primary contributors to BVOCs emission and atmospheric reactivity, hence the planting of these species should be reduced. Objectives: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) has spread globally and become a pandemic. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) not only infects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and causes GI symptoms, but also increases nosocomial transmission risk during endoscopic procedures for aerosol generation. We hereby share our infection control strategies aiming to minimize COVID‐19 transmission in the endoscopy center. Methods: We established our infection control strategies based on the guidance of Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy and inputs from hospital infection control experts: admission control through the procedure and patient triage, environmental control to reduce possible virus exposure, proper usage of personal protective equipment (PPE), and scope disinfection and room decontamination. All endoscopic procedures accomplished during COVID‐19 outbreak and progress of stepwise resumption of elective endoscopy procedures were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Only urgent or semi‐urgent procedures were performed during COVID‐19 outbreak. After no local new‐onset COVID‐19 case in Beijing for four weeks, we reopened the endoscopy center for elective procedures and monitored the outbreak continuously while maintaining a sustainable endoscopy service. Conclusions: It is imperative that all endoscopy centers should establish standard infection control strategies in order to fight COVID‐19 pandemic based on national guidance and academic society guidelines and tailor them to individual resources. Objective: To identify the clinical characteristics, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results, and prognostic factors of neuropsychiatric (NP) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE; NPSLE) in a relatively large patient series in China.Methods: Data of patients with NPSLE at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) were collected retrospectively from June 2012 to June 2016. NPSLE patients were compared with 220 non-NPSLE patients. Survival rates were evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank test, and Cox proportional hazards modeling. Cranial MRI results were also studied.Results: Of the 194 included patients, sixteen subtypes of NPSLE were identified, and the most common manifestations were seizure (36.6%), acute confusional state (25.3%), and cerebral vascular disease (15.5%). Compared with the non-NPSLE group, NPSLE patients were significantly more likely to have typical lupus symptoms, higher Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) scores (P = 0.002), and positive rate of anti-ribosomal P protein antibodies (P = 0.008). Patients with seizure were more likely to have higher SLEDAI-2K scores and positive anti-β2GP1 than non-NPSLE patients. Sixteen patients died during follow-up. The most common cause of death was infection (37.5%). NPSLE significantly decreased survival rates of SLE patients. Patients with elevated serum creatinine (P = 0.001), hypocomplementemia (P = 0.031), and SLEDAI - 2K scores ≥ 15 (P = 0.014) had shorter survival periods. Eighty-two patients underwent detailed cranial MRI analysis; of these, 50 (61.0%) had abnormal results. Small vessel disease was the most common abnormal finding, followed by inflammatory-like lesions and large vessel disease.Conclusions: High disease activity and positive rate of anti-ribosomal P protein antibodies may be risk factors for NPSLE. Frontline employees are generally under great pressure, and carry out repetitive and mundane daily tasks, leading to burnout and a high turnover intention among them. To identify ways to reduce this turnover intention, this study examines the effect of perceived organizational support (POS) on burnout and turnover intention in the Chinese context and adds to the literature on frontline employee burnout. Using data from a survey of the frontline employees of a gas station in Beijing, we examine the mediating effects of frontline employee burnout on their POS and turnover intention. This study shows that POS has a significant negative impact on burnout and turnover intention, and that job resources cannot substitute POS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Sustainable development has become a worldwide development theme. As a primary gathering place for human beings, a city's existence and development relates to water resource sustainability. This study used the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) model to select 24 indicators addressing water resources, the economy, society, and the environment. The coefficient of variation method was used to determine the weights of the indexes. A matter-element extension model was developed to evaluate water resource sustainability. Based on data availability, water resource sustainability was quantified for the city of Beijing, China, in 2012 and 2016. The results indicated that, in 2012, water resource sustainability was at relatively low efficiency level (water resources can meet the basic needs of social development, but in the long run can't achieve sustainable utilization), the maximum value of the multi-indicator correlation was −0.31044; in 2016, water resource sustainability was also at relatively low efficiency level, the maximum value of multi-indicator correlation is −0.40867. From 2012 to 2016, there was no significant change in water resources sustainability in Beijing, and all at a relatively low efficiency. The study's evaluation results present a reference for policymakers in developing water resource policies. The dioxins (DXN) are a set of pollutants encompass polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofuran (PCDD/F), their emissions from municipal waste incineration processes (MSWI) are normally detected under steady operating conditions. However, limited studies have focused on the PCDD/F emission characteristics under a complete maintenance operating period (CMOP), which includes shut-down, cooling, maintenance, heating, startup, and normal operations. In this article, the shutdown process (SDP) starts from the normal operation, followed by shutdown, and then cooling; while the startup process (SUP) commences from heating, followed by startup, and then normal operation. The detection and analysis were conducted at the SDP and SUP stages. The PCDD/F mass and total toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) concentrations were measured in the flue gas and bag filter fly ash (BF-FA) during a CMOP of Beijing MSWI plant. The highest PCDD/F concentrations in the flue gas were found in the "cooling" and "startup" phases; in the FA, this condition occurred in the "startup" phase. Further, the results show that the most heightened concentrations were observed for 5–6 chlorinated PCDF and 4–5 chlorinated PCDD among the 17 PCDD/F congeners in most cases. More importantly, the air pollution control devices (APCDs) which include activated carbon, lime, and BF, have high removal efficiency for PCDD/F (especially PCDD) during the "startup" phase. APCDs also easily release a considerable amount of PCDD/F because of the memory effect, which emits more PCDD/F at the "shutdown" phase than at the "startup" one. Besides, the annual PCDD/F emission in the flue gas of the MSWI plant was estimated to be 67.72 mg I-TEQ, of which the emission accounts for approx. 20% during the CMOP. Moreover, the experiment shows that the PCDD/F emissions of the MSWI plant in Beijing under unsteady conditions are more miniature than those reported earlier in other areas. Abstract: Based on the authors’ research efforts over the years, an in situ structural health monitoring (SHM) technique taking advantage of guided elastic waves has been developed and deployed via an online diagnosis system. The technique and the system were recently implemented on China’s latest high-speed train (CRH380CL) operated on Beijing−Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The system incorporated modularized components including active sensor network, active wave generation, multi-channel data acquisition, signal processing, data fusion, and results presentation. The sensor network, inspired by a new concept—“decentralized standard sensing”, was integrated into the bogie frames during the final assembly of CRH380CL, to generate and acquire bogie-guided ultrasonic waves, from which a wide array of signal features were extracted. Fusion of signal features through a diagnostic imaging algorithm led to a graphic illustration of the overall health state of the bogie in a real-time and intuitive manner. The in situ experimentation covered a variety of high-speed train operation events including startup, acceleration/deceleration, full-speed operation (300km/h), emergency braking, track change, as well as full stop. Mock-up damage affixed to the bogie was identified quantitatively and visualized in images. This in situ testing has demonstrated the feasibility, effectiveness, sensitivity, and reliability of the developed SHM technique and the system towards real-world applications. Background: Unfractionated heparin is widely used in the intensive care unit as an anticoagulant. However, weight-based heparin dosing has been shown to be suboptimal and may place patients at unnecessary risk during their intensive care unit stay.Objective: In this study, we intended to develop and validate a machine learning-based model to predict heparin treatment outcomes and to provide dosage recommendations to clinicians.Methods: A shallow neural network model was adopted in a retrospective cohort of patients from the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care III (MIMIC III) database and patients admitted to the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). We modeled the subtherapeutic, normal, and supratherapeutic activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) as the outcomes of heparin treatment and used a group of clinical features for modeling. Our model classifies patients into 3 different therapeutic states. We tested the prediction ability of our model and evaluated its performance by using accuracy, the kappa coefficient, precision, recall, and the F1 score. Furthermore, a dosage recommendation module was designed and evaluated for clinical decision support.Results: A total of 3607 patients selected from MIMIC III and 1549 patients admitted to the PUMCH who met our criteria were included in this study. The shallow neural network model showed results of F1 scores 0.887 (MIMIC III) and 0.925 (PUMCH). When compared with the actual dosage prescribed, our model recommended increasing the dosage for 72.2% (MIMIC III, 1240/1718) and 64.7% (PUMCH, 281/434) of the subtherapeutic patients and decreasing the dosage for 80.9% (MIMIC III, 504/623) and 76.7% (PUMCH, 277/361) of the supratherapeutic patients, suggesting that the recommendations can contribute to clinical improvements and that they may effectively reduce the time to optimal dosage in the clinical setting.Conclusions: The evaluation of our model for predicting heparin treatment outcomes demonstrated that the developed model is potentially applicable for reducing the misdosage of heparin and for providing appropriate decision recommendations to clinicians. Forest ecosystems are in serious trouble globally, largely due to the over-exploitation. To alleviate environmental problems caused by deforestation, China has undertaken a series of key forestry ecological development programs, including the Natural Forest Protection Program (NFPP), the Conversion of Cropland into Forests Program (CCFP), the Desertification Combating Program around Beijing and Tianjing (DCBT), the Key Shelterbelt Development Programs in the Three-North Region and in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River (KSDP) and the Nature Reserve Development Program in Forestry Sector (WCNR). This article aims to make a documentation of the specific contents (duration, major aims, geographic coverage and investment), and environmental impacts of these programs from peer-reviewed literature, official reports and journals. Environmental impact is measured with land area afforested (except the WCNR) and the consequent changes in ecosystem function. Overall, with the huge investment and long-term efforts, these programs have made tremendous progress in increasing vegetative coverage, enhancing carbon sequestration, controlling soil erosion, conservation of biodiversity, etc. For proper implementation and remarkable achievement, a more balanced approach with flexible planning, suitable measures and proper management should be adopted. Meanwhile, the scientific communities need to be more actively involved in execution and assessment of these programs. • Multi-source remote sensing data were used to determine changes in Miyun Reservoir. • The water body area increase was similar to the decrease in arable land area. • Anthropogenic factors affected the changes in water body area and water quality. The Miyun Reservoir, located in the Miyun District of Beijing, China, is the largest comprehensive water conservancy project in northern China and an important ecological protection area. The combined effects of many factors produce ecosystem changes in the basin; thus, it is important to analyze the spatial and temporal changes that occur here. Based on multi-source satellite remote sensing data, we analyzed changes in water body area, water level height, and water storage in the Miyun Reservoir from 2013 to 2022 and determined whether these changes were natural or caused by human activity. As traditional water body area extraction methods can misidentify buildings and mountainous areas as water bodies, we fused multiple deep learning models (U-Net and SegNet) using the adboost method, which combined the advantages of the basic models and achieved an overall recognition accuracy of > 90 %. Using annual variations in water storage at the reservoir, we determined that the water body area increased to 157.58 km2 between 2013 and 2022, nearly doubling in size, which corresponded to decreases in cultivated land and vegetated areas. Cultivated land is the main land use type affected by water body erosion. The overall water level height exhibited an upward trend (cumulative increase of 14.8 %), eventually reaching 146.11 m. The water storage volume also increased over time, with a cumulative increase of approximately 436 million m3. On this basis, the influences of temperature, precipitation, and human activity on the spatial and temporal variability of the Miyun Reservoir basin were analyzed. Abstract: To evaluate the epidemiology and molecular features of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) from children with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in Beijing, China, prospective community-acquired S. aureus SSTIs surveillance was conducted at the Beijing Children''s Hospital, Beijing, China, for a 12-month period from August 1, 2008, to July 30, 2009. Susceptibility to 12 antimicrobials was determined by the agar dilution method. Genotypic characteristics of CA-MRSA isolates were tested by SCCmec typing, spa typing, and multilocus sequence typing. Panton–Valentine leukocidin gene was detected. Of 1104 cases, 31.8% (351) were community-acquired S. aureus. CA-MRSA accounted for 4% (14) of S. aureus. Among 14 CA-MRSA and 120 MSSA isolates tested, 100% and 91.7% were multidrug resistant, respectively. ST59-MRSA-IVa-t437 (42.9%) was the most common form of CA-MRSA. Spa typing analysis of 120 MSSA isolates was performed, followed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing of a selected number of isolates. The most common spa types among MSSA were t084 (8.3%), t091 (5.8%), t034 (5%), t127 (4.2%), t002 (4.2%), and t796 (4.2%). No predominant spa type was seen. Of the MSSA isolates that could be classified into spa-CCs, 15.0% had a genetic background observed in CA-MRSA clones (spa-CC437, spa-CC342, and spa-CC377). Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL)-positive community-acquired S. aureus strains were more commonly associated with skin abscesses than other SSTIs (29.4% versus 5.9%, P < 0.01).In conclusion, CA-MRSA infections are not common among Chinese children with SSTIs. Our findings show that MSSA strains in China have diverse genetic backgrounds. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
