Air pollution is a major environmental urban issue, particularly in fast-growing cities in developing countries. Reducing air pollution is thus a challenge while evaluating the economic value of air quality is crucial for environmental policies made. However, few studies accurately estimate this value as they neglect the possible endogeneity issues, as well as the dynamic and heterogeneous effects of air pollution. Under the hedonic framework, we therefore assess the economic effect of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on housing prices in Beijing, China. We construct a panel based on resale apartment transactions matched with average quarterly PM2.5 data between 2013 and 2019. To reduce the risk of an estimation bias, we apply an instrumental variable (IV) approach. Our results show that PM2.5 is negatively associated with housing prices. Households were willing to pay an extra 0.0852% per housing unit price for an average quarterly reduction in PM2.5 of 1 µg/m3. Furthermore, we argue that high-income dwellers tend to pay more for clean air. The negative effects of PM2.5 across regions are significant and different. Compared with that in the basic year 2013, the negative effect increases in the first 3 years and then decreases in the last 3 years. Our findings enhance our comprehension of the economic impact of air quality and make a valuable contribution to the nuanced understanding of willingness to pay for air quality, which is beneficial in assessing and optimizing environmental regulations. Purpose: The medical–pharmaceutical separation (MPS) reform is a healthcare reform that focuses on reducing the proportion of drug expenditure. This study aims to analyze the impact of the MPS reform on hospitalization expenditure and its structure in tertiary public hospitals. Methods: Using propensity score matching and multi-period difference-in-difference methods to analyze the impact of the MPS reform on hospitalization expenditure and its structure, a difference-in-difference-in-difference model was established to analyze the heterogeneity of whether the tertiary public hospital was a diagnosis-related-group (DRG) payment hospital. Of 22 municipal public hospitals offering tertiary care in Beijing, monthly panel data of 18 hospitals from July 2011 to March 2017, totaling 1242 items, were included in this study. Results: After the MPS reform, the average drug expenditure, average Western drug expenditure, and average Chinese drug expenditures per hospitalization decreased by 24.5%, 24.6%, and 24.1%, respectively (P < 0.001). The proportions of drug expenditure decreased by 4.5% (P < 0.001), and the proportion of medical consumables expenditure increased significantly by 2.7% (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The MPS reform may significantly optimize the hospitalization expenditure structure and control irrational increases in expenditure. DRG payment can control the tendency to increase the proportions of medical consumables expenditure after the reform and optimize the effect of the reform. There is a need to strengthen the management of medical consumables in the future, promote the MPS reform and DRG payment linkage, and improve supporting measures to ensure the long-term effect of the reform. Clustering of gaseous sulfuric acid (SA) enhanced by dimethylamine (DMA) is a major mechanism for new particle formation (NPF) in polluted atmospheres. However, uncertainty remains regarding the SA-DMA nucleation parameterization that reasonably represents cluster dynamics and is applicable across various atmospheric conditions. This uncertainty hinders accurate three-dimensional (3-D) modeling of NPF and subsequent assessment of its environmental and climatic impacts. Here we extensively compare different cluster dynamics-based parameterizations for SA-DMA nucleation and identify the most reliable one through a combination of box-model simulations, 3-D modeling, and in-situ observations. Results show that the parameterization derived from Atmospheric Cluster Dynamic Code (ACDC) simulations, incorporating the latest theoretical insights (DLPNO-CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//ωB97X-D/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory) and adequate representation of cluster dynamics, exhibits dependable performance in 3-D NPF simulation for both winter and summer conditions in Beijing and shows promise for application in diverse atmospheric conditions. Another ACDC-derived parameterization, replacing the level of theory with RI-CC2/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z//M06-2X/6–311++G(3df,3pd), also performs well in NPF modeling at relatively low temperatures around 280 K but exhibits limitations at higher temperatures due to inappropriate representation of SA-DMA cluster thermodynamics. Additionally, a previously reported parameterization incorporating simplifications is applicable for simulating NPF in polluted atmospheres but tends to overestimate particle formation rates under conditions of elevated temperature (> ~300 K) and low condensation sink (< ~3×10-3 s-1). Our findings highlight the applicability of the new ACDC-derived parameterization, which couples the latest SA-DMA nucleation theory and holistic cluster dynamics, in 3-D NPF modeling. Numerous studies estimating transport CO2 emissions in developing countries were on the large scales and few provided high-resolution mapping of transport CO2 emissions from different transport modes according to their respective distribution and diffusion patterns. This study proposed a hybrid method for high-resolution mapping of transport CO2 emissions in metropolitan regions, and applied it to the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region of China during 2000-2019. The results indicate that: (1) The transport CO2 emissions in the BTH region increased rapidly, of which road transport carbon emissions accounting for approximately 80%, air transport carbon emissions accounting for nearly 20%, railway and water transport accounted for a relatively small proportion. (2) For the transport CO2 emission structure from 2000 to 2019, road transport was still the main source, but its proportion has decreased since recent years, which air transport became the second largest source of emissions and had greater impact on Beijing and Tianjin. (3) The transport carbon emission hot spots were mainly located in Beijing and kept shrinking, while the cold spots were mainly located in the southern part of Hebei Province and kept expanding. (4) The decoupling relationship between county-level transport carbon emissions and economic growth changed from weak decoupling to expansive negative decoupling, showing a non-ideal development in the BTH region. Overall, this study revealed the spatiotemporal characteristics of transport CO2 emissions in the BTH region, based on which specific carbon reduction strategies could be promoted to facilitate sustainable low-carbon transport development in metropolitan regions in developing countries. As a representative of the fourth-generation light sources, the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) in Beijing, China, utilizes a multi-bend achromat lattice to obtain an approximately 100 times emittance reduction compared with thirdgeneration light sources. New technologies bring new challenges to operate the storage ring. In order to meet the beam commissioning requirements of HEPS, a new framework for the development of high-level applications (HLAs) has been created. The key part of the new framework is a dual-layer physical module to facilitate the seamless fusion of physical simulation models with the real machine, allowing for fast switching between different simulation models to accommodate the various simulation scenarios. As a framework designed for development of physical applications, all variables are based on physical quantities. This allows physicists to analytically assess measurement parameters and optimize machine parameters in a more intuitive manner. To enhance both extensibility and adaptability, a modular design strategy is utilized, partitioning the entire framework into discrete modules in alignment with the requirements of HLA development. This strategy not only facilitates the independent development of each module but also minimizes inter-module coupling, thereby simplifying the maintenance and expansion of the entire framework. To simplify the development complexity, the design of the new framework is implemented using Python and is called Python-based Accelerator Physics Application Set (Pyapas). Taking advantage of Python's flexibility and robust library support, we are able to develop and iterate quickly, while also allowing for seamless integration with other scientific computing applications. HLAs for both the HEPS linac and booster have been successfully developed. During the beam commissioning process at the linac, Pyapas's ease of use and reliability have significantly reduced the time required for the beam commissioning operators. As a development framework for HLA designed for the new-generation light sources, Pyapas has the versatility to be employed with HEPS, as well as with other comparable light sources, due to its adaptability. Methods: Cases of newborns born to pregnant women infected with COVID-19 who received prenatal care or treatment at the Women and Children's Hospital of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Lhasa People's Hospital between January 2020 and December 2022 (infected group) and newborns born to healthy pregnant women (non-infected group) who were included by age, underlying disease and length of hospital stay were retrospectively collected. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 381 patients in the infected group and 314 patients in the non-infected group were included in the study. Results: The results of multivariate analysis showed that admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (OR = 3.342, 95% CI = 1.564– 6.764), shortness of breath (OR = 2.853, 95% CI = 1.789– 3.154), irregular breathing (OR = 2.465, 95% CI = 1.879– 4.112) and neonatal jaundice (OR = 2.324, 95% CI = 1.989– 2.445) were the factors influencing the low Apgar scores of neonates in the infected group (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: Neonates born to pregnant women infected with COVID-19 had lower Apgar scores and higher incidences of complications, such as shortness of breath, groaning, irregular breathing and neonatal jaundice, than newborns born to pregnant women not infected with COVID-19. Purpose: Diagnosing Renal artery stenosis (RAS) presents challenges. This research aimed to develop a deep learning model for the computer-aided diagnosis of RAS, utilizing multimodal fusion technology based on ultrasound scanning images, spectral waveforms, and clinical information. Methods: A total of 1485 patients received renal artery ultrasonography from Peking Union Medical College Hospital were included and their color doppler sonography (CDS) images were classified according to anatomical site and left-right orientation. The RAS diagnosis was modeled as a process involving feature extraction and multimodal fusion. Three deep learning (DL) models (ResNeSt, ResNet, and XCiT) were trained on a multimodal dataset consisted of CDS images, spectrum waveform images, and individual basic information. Predicted performance of different models were compared with senior physician and evaluated on a test dataset (N = 117 patients) with renal artery angiography results. Results: Sample sizes of training and validation datasets were 3292 and 169 respectively. On test data (N = 676 samples), predicted accuracies of three DL models were more than 80% and the ResNeSt achieved the accuracy 83.49% ± 0.45%, precision 81.89% ± 3.00%, and recall 76.97% ± 3.7%. There was no significant difference between the accuracy of ResNeSt and ResNet (82.84% ± 1.52%), and the ResNeSt was higher than the XCiT (80.71% ± 2.23%, p < 0.05). Compared to the gold standard, renal artery angiography, the accuracy of ResNest model was 78.25% ± 1.62%, which was inferior to the senior physician (90.09%). Besides, compared to the multimodal fusion model, the performance of single-modal model on spectrum waveform images was relatively lower. Genomic selection (GS) has great potential to increase genetic gain in poultry breeding. However, the performance of genomic prediction in duck growth and breast morphological (BM) traits remains largely unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the benefits of genomic prediction for duck growth and BM traits using methods such as GBLUP, single‐step GBLUP, Bayesian models, and different marker densities. This study collected phenotypic data for 14 growth and BM traits in a crossbreed population of 1893 Pekin duck × mallard, which included 941 genotyped ducks. The estimation of genetic parameters indicated high heritabilities for body weight (0.54–0.72), whereas moderate‐to‐high heritabilities for average daily gain (0.21–0.57) traits. The heritabilities of BM traits ranged from low to moderate (0.18–0.39). The prediction ability of GS on growth and BM traits increased by 7.6% on average compared to the pedigree‐based BLUP method. The single‐step GBLUP outperformed GBLUP in most traits with an average of 0.3% higher reliability in our study. Most of the Bayesian models had better performance on predictive reliability, except for BayesR. BayesN emerged as the top‐performing model for genomic prediction of both growth and BM traits, exhibiting an average increase in reliability of 3.0% compared to GBLUP. The permutation studies revealed that 50 K markers had achieved ideal prediction reliability, while 3 K markers still achieved 90.8% predictive capability would further reduce the cost for duck growth and BM traits. This study provides promising evidence for the application of GS in improving duck growth and BM traits. Our findings offer some useful strategies for optimizing the predictive ability of GS in growth and BM traits and provide theoretical foundations for designing a low‐density panel in ducks. Background: The duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is one of the principal natural hosts of influenza A virus (IAV), harbors almost all subtypes of IAVs and resists to many IAVs which cause extreme virulence in chicken and human. However, the response of duck's adaptive immune system to IAV infection is poorly characterized due to lack of a detailed gene map of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Results: We herein reported a chromosome-scale Beijing duck assembly by integrating Nanopore, Bionano, and Hi-C data. This new reference genome SKLA1.0 covers 40 chromosomes, improves the contig N50 of the previous duck assembly with highest contiguity (ZJU1.0) of more than a 5.79-fold, surpasses the chicken and zebra finch references in sequence contiguity and contains a complete genomic map of the MHC. Our 3D MHC genomic map demonstrated that gene family arrangement in this region was primordial; however, families such as AnplMHCI, AnplMHCIIβ, AnplDMB, NKRL (NK cell receptor-like genes) and BTN underwent gene expansion events making this area complex. These gene families are distributed in two TADs and genes sharing the same TAD may work in a co-regulated model. Conclusions: These observations supported the hypothesis that duck's adaptive immunity had been optimized with expanded and diversified key immune genes which might help duck to combat influenza virus. New particle formation contributes significantly to the number concentration of ultrafine particles (UFPs, d ≤ 100 nm) and has a great impact on human health and global climate. Iodine oxoacids (HIO x , including iodic acid, HIO 3 , and iodous acid, HIO 2) have been observed in pristine regions and proved to dominate new particle formation (NPF) at some sites. However, the knowledge of HIO x in polluted urban areas is rather limited. Here, we conducted a long-term measurements of gaseous iodine oxoacids and sulfuric acid in Beijing from January 2019 to October 2021 and also in Nanjing from March 2019 to February 2020 and investigated the contribution of HIO x to UFP number concentration in both urban environments. HIO 3 is highest in summer, up to 2.85 × 10 6 and 2.78 × 10 6 cm -3 in Beijing and Nanjing, respectively, and is lowest in winter by 96 % and 75 %, respectively. HIO 3 exhibits more prominent variation than H 2 SO 4 in both urban sites. HIO 3 concentration shows a clear diurnal pattern at both sites with a daily maximum at around noontime, similar to the atmospheric temperature, solar radiation, and ozone (O 3) levels. HIO 2 concentration has the same diurnal and seasonal trend as HIO 3 but is overall about an order of magnitude lower than HIO 3 concentration. Back trajectory analysis suggests that the sources for inland iodine species could be a mix of marine and terrestrial origins, with both having peak iodine emission in warm seasons. While the contribution of HIO 2 to particle growth is marginal in Beijing and Nanjing, our results demonstrate that HIO 3 enhances the particle survival probability of sub-3 nm particles by about 40 % (median) and occasionally by more than 100 % in NPF events, suggesting HIO x are significant contributor to UFPs in polluted urban areas. As the growth contribution from HIO 3 and H 2 SO 4 is similar on a per-molecule basis, we propose that the sum of HIO 3 and H 2 SO 4 could be used to estimate sub-3 nm particle growth of inorganic acid origin in polluted atmospheres with a significant amount of HIO x. Background: Fine motor skills are closely related to cognitive function. However, there is currently no comprehensive assessment of fine motor movement and how it corresponds with cognitive function. To conduct a complete assessment of fine motor and clarify the relationship between various dimensions of fine motor and cognitive function. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 267 community-based participants aged ≥ 60 years in Beijing, China. We assessed four tests performance and gathered detailed fine motor indicators using Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) motion capture technology. The wearable MEMS device provided us with precise fine motion metrics, while Chinese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to assess cognitive function. We adopted logistic regression to analyze the relationship between fine motor movement and cognitive function. Results: 129 (48.3%) of the participants had cognitive impairment. The vast majority of fine motor movements have independent linear correlations with MoCA-BJ scores. According to logistic regression analysis, completion time in the Same-pattern tapping test (OR = 1.033, 95%CI = 1.003–1.063), Completion time of non-dominant hand in the Pieces flipping test (OR = 1.006, 95%CI = 1.000-1.011), and trajectory distance of dominant hand in the Pegboard test (OR = 1.044, 95%CI = 1.010–1.068), which represents dexterity, are related to cognitive impairment. Coordination, represented by lag time between hands in the Same-pattern tapping (OR = 1.663, 95%CI = 1.131–2.444), is correlated with cognitive impairment. Coverage in the Dual-hand drawing test as an important indicator of stability is negatively correlated with cognitive function (OR = 0.709, 95%CI = 0.6501–0.959). Based on the above 5-feature model showed consistently high accuracy and sensitivity at the MoCA-BJ score (ACU = 0.80–0.87). Conclusions: The results of a comprehensive fine-motor assessment that integrates dexterity, coordination, and stability are closely related to cognitive functioning. Accurately estimating building heights is crucial for various applications, including urban planning, climate studies, population estimation, and environmental assessment. However, this remains a challenging task, particularly for large areas. Satellite-based Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) has shown promise, but it often faces difficulties in distinguishing building photons from other ground objects. To address this challenge, we propose a novel method that incorporates building footprints, relative positions of building and ground photons, and a self-adaptive buffer for building photon selection. We employ the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) photon-counting LiDAR, specifically the ICESat-2/ATL03 data, along with building footprints obtained from the New York City (NYC) Open Data platform. The proposed approach was applied to estimate the heights of 17,399 buildings in NYC, and the results showed strong consistency with the reference building heights. The root mean square error (RMSE) was 8.1 m, and for 71% of the buildings, the mean absolute error (MAE) was less than 3 m. Furthermore, we conducted an extensive evaluation of the proposed approach and thoroughly investigated the influence of terrain, region, building height, building density, and parameter selection. We also verified the effectiveness of our approach in an experimental area in Beijing and compared it with other existing methods. By leveraging ICESat-2 LiDAR data, building footprints, and advanced selection techniques, the proposed approach demonstrates the potential to accurately estimate building heights over broad areas. Water scarcity is a significant challenge in China, and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) aims to address the water deficit in the northern region. This study analyses Landsat 5/7/8 remote sensing imagery from 2001 to 2020 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform to assess the impact of the SNWDP on surface water bodies in water-receiving areas. Moreover, by integrating MODIS evapotranspiration data and ERA5 meteorological reanalysis data, this study comprehensively assesses the SNWDP's contribution to varied surface water body changes. Using an improved multi-temporal water frequency method, this study extracts max, seasonal, and year-long water surface areas. The results reveal that Beijing and Henan provinces have experienced significant increases in water surface areas post-SNWDP, with their max water surface area growing at a rate of 10.42 km2/yr and 33.49 km2/year, respectively. However, water surface areas in several provinces, especially those along the east route, were not observed to increase. The spatially detailed Mann–Kendall test indicates that the expansion of year-long water bodies is mostly concentrated near the central route project, revealing spatial heterogeneity in the water replenishment effect. Cropland and impervious surfaces are the main contributors to transfers in and out of water bodies. Meteorological and water use factors for spatial variations in water changes are also identified. These findings provide insights into the varied hydrological consequences of the SNWDP and contribute to the evaluation and management of similar large-scale water diversion projects around the world. In this paper, a vehicle track coupling dynamic model including bearing outer ring defects is built, the time history of the axle‐box vibration acceleration and the time history of the bearing roller‐outer raceway contact load under the condition of random track irregularity on the Beijing‐Tianjin line are obtained by simulation calculation. The results show that when the outer ring defect of the bearing occurs, the axle box will generate high‐frequency vibration at the resonance peak in the vertical and lateral directions. When the defect on the bearing outer ring is in the small width of 1 mm, the roller only imposes one impact when passing through the defect area. However, when the width exceeds 3 mm, the large defect causes the roller to impose a double impact on the lateral direction of the axle box, due to changes in bearing clearance in the passing‐through process. When the running speed of the train is about 250 km h−1, the width of bearing outer ring defects needs to be limited to within 1 mm, to minimize a series of problems such as structural fatigue caused by the increased bearing roller‐outer raceway contact load caused by bearing outer ring defects. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors for postpartum PFD in women living in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).Methods: Parous women who attended the outpatient gynaecology clinic at our hospital between June 2022 and August 2022 were screened in this study. The demographic and clinical data of these women were collected. Their pelvic floor functions were evaluated via a pelvic organ prolapse (POP) quantification examination, the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory Questionnaire-20 (PFDI-20) and the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS).Results: A total of 201 women were included in this study, of whom 81.09% (163/201) were Tibetan. Twenty-seven women (13.43%) were diagnosed with POP stage ≥ 2 and 27 women (13.43%) with an OABSS score ≥ 3. The median PFDI-20 total score was 4.17 (range 0– 43.75). Han women (n = 38) in the TAR had much lower PFDI-20 total scores, compared with Tibetan women (n = 163) (p < 0.05). The results of the multiple linear regression models showed that the PFDI-20 scores obtained from women living in the TAR were closely related to parity, history of heavy weight lifting, age, history of instrumental deliveries, ethnicity and number of caesarean sections.Conclusion: Pelvic floor disorder is common among parous women living in the TAR. Ethnicity, parity, history of heavy weight lifting, age, history of instrumental deliveries and number of caesarean sections are the factors closely related to the PFDI-20 scores. The reasons for covariations of speleothem δ13C and δ18O remain controversial, primarily due to the limited high‐resolution stalagmite records that can be compared with meteorological data. This study presents δ13C and δ18O records of two coeval, annually laminated stalagmites (TS9701 and TS9501) spanning the past ∼2000 years from Shihua cave, Beijing, northern China. The low correlation between stalagmite TS9701 records, with annual resolution, and local annual precipitation as well as mean annual temperature on interannual to decadal scales indicates that the positive covariations of δ18O and δ13C in TS9701 are partly attributed to kinetic isotope effects caused by rapid CO2 degassing. Isotopic disequilibrium between HCO3−(aq) and drip water, induced by prior calcite precipitation on cave ceiling and stalactite surface, is another potential contributing factor. δ18O and δ13C exhibits distinct patterns on multidecadal to millennial timescales. δ18O records show notable centennial variability, aligning with El Niño‐Southern Oscillation cycles. In contrast, δ13C profiles reveal a decreasing trend during the first ∼750 years, followed by an increasing trend. Prior to 1588 AD, variations in δ13C broadly correspond to changes in warm season temperature and/or moisture on centennial scale. Both δ13C records show an abrupt enrichment between 1588 and 1654 AD. Historical documents indicate that this anomaly is likely attributed to coal mining and resultant deforestation around Shihua cave during late‐Ming and early‐Qing Dynasties. In summary, while isotopic disequilibrium can cause high‐frequency covariations of speleothem δ18O and δ13C, it does not erase the imprints of climate changes and human activities on multidecadal to millennial timescales. Objectives. Type 2 diabetic kidney disease (DKD), a chronic microvascular complication of diabetes, may exhibit a complex interrelation with coagulation function. This study is aimed at elucidating the association between coagulation function and DKD. Methods. This was a real-world observational study conducted in Beijing, involving 2,703 participants. All patients with diabetes were classified into two groups, viz., DKD and non-DKD groups. Effect magnitudes are denoted as odds ratios (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). To mitigate potential bias in group comparisons, we employed propensity score matching (PSM). Results. After adjusting for variables such as age, gender, systolic blood pressure (SBP), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), triglyceride (TG), c-reactive protein (CRP), platelet (PLT), and serum albumin (sALB), it was discerned that fibrinogen (FIB) (OR, 95% CI, P : 1.565, 1.289-1.901, <0.001) and fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) (1.203, 1.077-1.344, 0.001) were significantly correlated with an increased risk of DKD. To facilitate clinical applications, a nomogram prediction model was established, demonstrating commendable accuracy for DKD prediction. Conclusions. Our findings suggest that elevated levels of FIB and FDP serve as potential risk indicators for DKD, and coagulation function may play an important role in the occurrence and development of DKD. Urban airports are typically large infrastructures with significant cultural, economic, and ecological impacts; meanwhile, abandoned airports are common worldwide. However, there is limited knowledge regarding transformation strategies for the renewal of abandoned airports and their surrounding regions in historically and culturally rich areas. We use Beijing's Nanyuan Airport as a case study, combining the historic urban landscape approach, land use and land cover change, and counterfactual simulations of land use patterns to construct a comprehensive analytical framework. Our framework was used to analyze the long-term land use patterns of the study area, determine its value, and improve perception from a macro- and multi-perspective. We discovered that the traditional knowledge and planning systems in the study area have largely disappeared, but Nanyuan Airport's impact on the surrounding land use patterns is unique and significant. By considering the characteristics and mechanisms of land use in the study area, we aimed to find a balance point between the historical context and future potential. As such, we propose optimized recommendations with the theme of connection and development engines. Against the backdrop of climate change, heat waves have become increasingly detrimental to cities. Urban morphology, a comprehensive reflection of material and non-material elements in the physical world, is closely related to environmental quality, thermal environment, population health, and other elements. From the perspective of urban morphological regions, this paper examines the characteristics of heat exposure, sensitivity, adaptability, and vulnerability of the main urban areas and its surrounding areas in Beijing, in combination with land surface temperature, air temperature, population characteristics, vegetation distribution, and other indicators. The results indicate that the built-up areas of Beijing are dominated by compact classes, making them most vulnerable to heat waves due to the unfavorable thermal environment, high population density, a large proportion of young and old people, and sparse vegetation cover. In contrast, the open low-rise class shows the highest adaptive capacity due to better economic condition of the population and high vegetation cover. This paper provides mitigation strategies from angles of morphology optimization and policy guidance, and suggests that the assessment and analysis of heat vulnerability based on urban morphology can provide a reference for climate changeoriented planning and design, and promote urban high-quality development and sustainable construction. Well-designed passive buildings can drastically reduce building energy consumption, and optimal design of air conditioning systems is the key to achieving low operating energy consumption in near-zero energy buildings. TRNSYS was used to build the simulation model for a near-zero-energy building and its air conditioning system in Beijing. The Taguchi method was used to sort the design parameters that affect system performance according to the degree of influence and find the best combination of design parameters to optimize the system, which increased the solar fraction of the system by 4.6% and reduced the annual operating energy consumption by 7.32%. For the optimized system, a multi-objective optimization function of the life cycle costs and carbon emissions was established. By comparing the energy consumption, life cycle costs, and carbon emissions of the air conditioning system under different system configurations, optimal configuration solutions under different design target weights were obtained. It was found that using a ground source heat pump system + solar collector system had better energy-savings benefits, but the operating costs were slightly higher. The application of absorption refrigeration can reduce the system operating costs but will increase the initial investment. The best economic benefits were achieved using the ground source heat pump system + solar collector system for heating in winter and the ground source heat pump system for cooling in summer, and the best environmental benefits were obtaining using the ground source heat pump system + solar collector system for heating in winter and the ground source heat pump system + solar absorption refrigeration system in summer, which provides a reference for the optimization design and research of air conditioning systems in near-zero energy buildings. Understanding the composition and sources of atmospheric ultrafine particles (UFPs) is essential in evaluating their exposure risks. It requires long-term measurements with high time resolution, which are scarce to date. We performed near-continuous measurements of UFP composition during four seasons in urban Beijing using a thermal desorption chemical ionization mass spectrometer, accompanied by real-time size distribution measurements. We found that UFPs in urban Beijing are dominated by organic components, varying seasonally from 68 % to 81 %. CHO organics (i.e., molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen) are the most abundant in summer, while sulfur-containing organics, some nitrogen-containing organics, nitrate, and chloride are the most abundant in winter. With the increase of particle diameter, the contribution of CHO organics decreases, while that of sulfur-containing and nitrogen-containing organics, nitrate, and chloride increases. Source apportionment analysis of the UFP organics indicates contributions from cooking and vehicle sources, photooxidation sources enriched in CHO organics, and aqueous/heterogeneous sources enriched in nitrogen- and sulfur-containing organics. The increased contributions of cooking, vehicle, and photooxidation components are usually accompanied by simultaneous increases in UFP number concentrations related to cooking emission, vehicle emission, and new particle formation, respectively, while the increased contribution of the aqueous/heterogeneous composition is usually accompanied by the growth of UFP mode diameters. The highest UFP number concentrations in winter are due to the strongest new particle formation, the strongest local primary particle number emissions, and the slowest condensational growth of UFPs to larger sizes. Background: Dysphagia can lead to serious complications such as aspiration and aspiration pneumonia, timely and effective rehabilitation training can improve the swallowing function of patients. However, the conventional rehabilitation training methods used in clinical settings have shortcomings such as poor adherence of patients. We present the study design of a randomized controlled trial that evaluated whether video-game based swallowing rehabilitation training can effectively improve swallowing in patients with dysphagia and whether it has additional benefits compared with conventional training methods to improve swallowing function and training compliance among patients with dysphagia. Methods: A randomized controlled trial with 4 weeks of intervention and 4 weeks of follow-up will be conducted in a rehabilitation center in Beijing, China. We will enroll 78 patients aged 18–80 years with dysphagia. Participants will be randomly assigned to the experimental group (video-game based swallowing function training) and the control group (conventional swallowing function training). All participants will receive 30 min of training per day, 5 times per week, for a total of 4 weeks. The primary outcome is swallowing function. Secondary outcomes include patients' quality of life, training compliance, and training satisfaction. Outcomes are assessed at baseline (pre-treatment), 4 weeks of treatment (post-treatment), and 8 weeks (follow-up), and the assessor is not aware of the participants' grouping. Discussion: The protocol describes a new rehabilitation training method for dysphagia, which involves participant eligibility recruitment, recruitment strategies, and data analysis plan. Assessing the health risks of sensitive population, such as children and teenagers, through multiple exposure routes (MERs) such as ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact is critical for policy creation that protects or reduces exposure to pollutants for all populations. Heavy metal (HM) contents in food and environmental media in Beijing, capital of China, were collected. Furthermore, on the basis of considering the bioavailability of HMs, we evaluated the multiple environmental routes and health risks to HMs in children and teenagers of eight age groups (2–<3, 3–<4, 4–<5, 5–<6, 6–<9, 9–<12, 12–<15, and 15–<18) in Beijing, China by Monte Carlo simulation approach. The main findings are as follows: lead exposure in children aged 2–<3 years exceeds the exposure dose (0.3 μg·kg−1·d−1) of 0.5 point reduction in intelligence quotient. Moreover, children aged 2–<3 and 6–<9 years have relatively high non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) of 1.32 and 1.30, respectively. The carcinogenic risk (CR) for children aged 6–<9 and 9–<12 years is 2.73×10−6 and 2.39×10−6, respectively. Specifically, the contributions of oral ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation to the NCR were 69.5%, 18.9%, and 11.6%, respectively. Moreover, the combined NCR contributions of copper, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic (As) were about 69.4%. The contributions of the above three routes to the CR were 93.4%, 4.1%, and 2.5%, in that order, with the largest CR contribution of As being about 92.0%. Urban green spaces play a key role in constructing an ecological civilization in China. In this context, the realization and assessment of the social value of urban green spaces have received increasing attention. Taking the visitors of the Summer Palace in Beijing as the research object, this study used the public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) to collect research data, assess the social value of ecosystem services in the Summer Palace, and determine its spatial distribution. By examining the social value of urban green spaces, this study explored the relationship between the spatial distribution of ecosystem social value and environmental landscape features. The influence of different environmental values on the spatial distribution of the visitors' perceived social value was also investigated to provide a decision-making basis for the planning and management of urban ecological spaces and the supply and protection of urban ecological products. This study found that cultural, historical, and aesthetic values were preferred by an increasing number of visitors. The hotspots of social value in the Summer Palace of Beijing have three cores and multiple centers. By analyzing the relationship between the three value types with higher preference and the environmental landscape features of the Summer Palace, this study found that the distribution of social values is closely related to the architectural complexes and waters. Anthropocentrists have smaller sample sizes and generally lower social value indices within the sample group, and ecocentrists have higher perceptions of overall social values. TanSat-2, the next-generation Chinese greenhouse gas monitoring satellite for measuring carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), has a new city-scale observing mode. We assess the theoretical capability of TanSat-2 to quantify integrated urban CO 2 emissions over the cities of Beijing, Jinan, Los Angeles, and Paris. A high-resolution emission inventory and a column-averaged CO 2 ( X CO 2 ) transport model are used to build an urban CO 2 inversion system. We design a series of numerical experiments describing this observing system to evaluate the impacts of sampling patterns and X CO 2 measurement errors on inferring urban CO 2 emissions. We find that the correction in systematic and random flux errors is correlated with the signal-to-noise ratio of satellite measurements. The reduction in systematic flux errors for the four cities are sizable, but are subject to unbiased satellite sampling and favorable meteorological conditions (i.e., less cloud cover and lower wind speed). The corresponding correction to the random flux error is 19–28%. Even though clear-sky satellite data from TanSat-2 have the potential to reduce flux errors for cities with high CO 2 emissions, quantifying urban emissions by satellite-based measurements is subject to additional limitations and uncertainties. The Lightning Mapping Imager (LMI) onboard the Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) satellite is the first independently developed satellite-borne lightning imager in China. It enables continuous lightning detection in China and surrounding areas, regardless of weather conditions. The FY-4A LMI uses a Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) array for lightning detection, and the accuracy of lightning positioning is influenced by cloud top height (CTH). In this study, we proposed an ellipsoid CTH parallax correction (ECPC) model for lightning positioning applicable to FY-4A LMI. The model utilizes CTH data from the Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) on FY-4A to correct the lightning positioning data. According to the model, when the CTH is 12 km, the maximum deviation in lightning positioning caused by CTH in Beijing is approximately 0.1177° in the east–west direction and 0.0530° in the north–south direction, corresponding to a horizontal deviation of 13.1558 km, which exceeds the size of a single ground detection unit of the geostationary satellite lightning imager. Therefore, it is necessary to be corrected. A comparison with data from the Beijing Broadband Lightning Network (BLNET) and radar data shows that the corrected LMI data exhibit spatial distribution that is closer to the simultaneous BLNET lightning positioning data. The coordinate differences between the two datasets are significantly reduced, indicating higher consistency with radar data. The correction algorithm decreases the LMI lightning location deviation caused by CTH, thereby improving the accuracy and reliability of satellite lightning positioning data. The proposed ECPC model can be used for the real-time correction of lightning data when CTH is obtained at the same time, and it can be also used for the post-correction of space-based lightning detection with other cloud top height data. Based on panel data from 2010 to 2019, this study examines the relationship between defense science and technology innovation and high‐quality economic development at the provincial level in China. Using the gray correlation analysis method of panel data and an evaluation index system of high‐quality economic development, we calculate the gray correlation coefficient and decompose its time‐series gray correlation degree and cross‐sectional. Our findings indicate that the correlation between defense science and technology innovation and high‐quality economic development in China is generally stable during 2010–2019. However, Beijing stands out as an exception with a correlation coefficient of less than 0.5. Furthermore, there is regional gray correlation heterogeneity with the smallest correlation degree found in the eastern region and the largest in the northeast region. Based on our results, we propose three countermeasure suggestions: first, to balance national defense construction and economic construction; second, to optimize national defense science and technology strategy according to local conditions; and third, to effectively utilize industrial structure advantages. In summary, our study contributes to the literature by highlighting the relationship between defense science and technology innovation and high‐quality economic development in China. Aims: This study aims to provide representative information on heart failure (HF) patients in China, especially older adults aged ≥75 years. We aim to clarify the age‐related discrepancies in performance measures and the modifying effect of age on the impact of HF patients' characteristics on clinical outcomes. Methods and results: All HF patients admitted into five tertiary and four secondary hospitals of the Capital Medical University were divided into two groups according to age: 1419 (53.3%) were <75 years, and 1244 (46.7%) were ≥75 years. Older HF patients were more likely to be women, with higher left ventricular ejection fraction, with co‐morbidities including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/asthma, anaemia, chronic kidney disease, stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA), atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter, hypertension, and coronary artery disease, while obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolaemia and valvular heart disease were more prevalent among younger HF patients. Left ventricular ejection fraction assessment was performed in a similar proportion of patients in the younger and older groups (81.7% vs. 80.5%, P = 0.426), while B‐type natriuretic peptide/N terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide was tested in a lower proportion in the younger group (84.8% vs. 89%, P = 0.001). At discharge, HF with reduced ejection fraction patients were less likely to receive beta‐blockers, angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers, or combined beta‐blockers and angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers therapy in the older group (49.74% vs. 63.2%, P = 0.002; 52.9% vs. 64.7%, P = 0.006; and 28.57% vs. 45.5%, P < 0.001, respectively) but were equally likely to receive mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists in the two age groups (80.8% vs. 84.1%, P = 0.322). Older patients with HF had higher risk of in‐hospital and 1 year mortality (2.7% vs. 1.3%, P = 0.011; 21.7% vs. 12.5%; P < 0.001, respectively). Higher body mass index was associated with better outcomes in both age groups. New York Heart Association functional class IV and estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 were independent predictors of 1 year mortality. The associations between patients' characteristics and risk of mortality were not modified by age. Medulloblastoma (MB) is one of the most common malignant childhood brain tumors (WHO grade IV). Its high degree of malignancy leads to an unsatisfactory prognosis, requiring more precise and personalized treatment in the near future. Multi-omics and artificial intelligence have been playing a significant role in precise medical research, but their implementation needs a large amount of clinical information and biomaterials. For these reasons, it is urgent for current MB researchers to establish a large sample-size database of MB that contains complete clinical data and sufficient biomaterials such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), cancer tissue, and urine. Unfortunately, there are few biobanks of pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors throughout the world for limited specimens, scarce funds, different standards collecting methods and et cl. Even though, China falls behind western countries in this area. The present research set up a standard workflow to construct the Beijing Children's Hospital Medulloblastoma (BCH-MB) biobank. Clinical data from children with MB and for collecting and storing biomaterials, along with regular follow-up has been collected and recorded in this database. In the future, the BCH-MB biobank could make it possible to validate the promising biomarkers already identified, discover unrevealed MB biomarkers, develop novel therapies, and establish personalized prognostic models for children with MB upon the support of its sufficient data and biomaterials, laying the foundation for individualized therapies of children with MB. Purpose: Blood eosinophil is a promising biomarker for phenotyping patients with acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD). We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of eosinophil on short- and long-term outcomes stratified by corticosteroid treatment among AECOPD inpatients.Patients and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we included patients hospitalized for AECOPD from July 2013 to June 2021 in Beijing, China. Clinical data were collected from electronic medical records. The blood eosinophil count was measured within 24h after admission. Eosinophilic AECOPD was defined as having an eosinophil percentage ≥ 2%. The study outcomes were length of stay (LOS), treatment failure, and AECOPD readmission risk within 3 years of discharge. Multivariable models were used to analyze the associations between blood eosinophil count and outcomes stratified by corticosteroid treatment during hospitalization.Results: A total of 2406 AECOPD patients were included. The median LOS of AECOPD patients was 10 (interquartile range: 8– 14) days. The eosinophil percentage was negatively associated with LOS (P-trend=0.014). Compared with the non-eosinophilic AECOPD group, the eosinophilic group had a 58% lower risk of treatment failure (OR=0.42, 95% CI: 0.20– 0.89) in patients treated with systemic corticosteroids, but no association was observed in those treated with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) only (OR=0.95, 95% CI: 0.60– 1.52). The eosinophilic group had an increased risk of 90-day re-admission in patients treated with ICS only (HR=1.51, 95% CI: 1.00– 2.29), but not in patients treated with systemic corticosteroids during hospitalization (HR=0.67, 95% CI: 0.39– 1.15). No statistically significant results were found for 180-day, 1-year, or 3-year readmission risk.Conclusion: Elevated blood eosinophils in AECOPD were associated with shorter length of stay and improved response to treatment with systemic corticosteroids, but not inhaled corticosteroids. Sulfuric acid (SA) is a governing gaseous precursor for atmospheric new particle formation (NPF), a major source of global ultrafine particles, in environments studied around the world. In polluted urban atmospheres with high condensation sinks (CSs), the formation of stable SA–amine clusters, such as SA–dimethylamine (DMA) clusters, usually initializes intense NPF events. Coagulation scavenging and cluster evaporation are dominant sink processes of SA–amine clusters in urban atmospheres, yet these loss processes are not quantitatively included in the present parameterizations of SA–amine nucleation. We herein report a parameterization of SA–DMA nucleation, based on cluster dynamic simulations and quantum chemistry calculations, with certain simplifications to greatly reduce the computational costs. Compared with previous SA–DMA nucleation parameterizations, this new parameterization was able to reproduce the dependences of particle formation rates on temperature and CSs. We then incorporated it in a three-dimensional (3-D) chemical transport model to simulate the evolution of the particle number size distributions. Simulation results showed good consistency with the observations in the occurrence of NPF events and particle number size distributions in wintertime Beijing and represented a significant improvement compared to that using a parameterization without coagulation scavenging. Quantitative analysis shows that SA–DMA nucleation contributes significantly to nucleation rates and aerosol population during the 3-D simulations in Beijing (>99 % and >60 %, respectively). These results broaden the understanding of NPF in urban atmospheres and stress the necessity of including the effects of coagulation scavenging and cluster stability in simulating SA–DMA nucleation in 3-D simulations. Representing these processes is thus likely to improve model performance in particle source apportionment and quantification of aerosol effects on air quality, human health, and climate. Rabies is a serious public health problem in Asia and Africa. Approximately 99% of cases result from a bite by an infected dog. The high rabies risk countries are generally characterized by rapid urbanization; however, the prevalence and risk factors for rabies in urban dogs in developing countries remain unclear. Beijing, the capital of China, has been undergoing rapid urbanization, and implemented compulsory rabies immunization for dogs on October 1, 2014. We evaluated the effects of this immunization policy and investigated the dynamics and determinants of the spread of dog rabies virus (RABV) in Beijing. Between 2013 and 2018, the positive rate of rabies in biting dogs declined significantly; 79.6% of these were stray dogs. Reconstructed spatiotemporal diffusion for RABV presents a more central distribution within Beijing and a surrounding dissemination of virus lineage toward suburban areas, indicating that rabies is self-sustaining in Beijing. Continuous RABV phylogeographic reconstructions and logistic regression analysis of rabies cases revealed that rabies tended to remain in commercial areas, high-rise residences, demolition areas, and high-GDP, high-population and high-accessibility areas. Demolition areas, where many residents have abandoned their pets, are recognized as high-risk areas for rabies. Our findings reveal that the implementation of the immunization policy in Beijing has been effective in prevention and control of canine rabies, and because the prevalence of canine rabies results from multiple factors, emphasize the important role of multi-sectoral cooperation in rabies prevention and control. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the dramatic reduction of anthropogenic emissions provided a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of reduced anthropogenic activity and primary emissions on atmospheric chemical processes and the consequent formation of secondary pollutants. Here, we utilize comprehensive observations to examine the response of atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) to the changes in the atmospheric chemical cocktail. We find that the main clustering process was unaffected by the drastically reduced traffic emissions, and the formation rate of 1.5 nm particles remained unaltered. However, particle survival probability was enhanced due to an increased particle growth rate (GR) during the lockdown period, explaining the enhanced NPF activity in earlier studies. For GR at 1.5–3 nm, sulfuric acid (SA) was the main contributor at high temperatures, whilst there were unaccounted contributing vapors at low temperatures. For GR at 3–7 and 7–15 nm, oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) played a major role. Surprisingly, OOM composition and volatility were insensitive to the large change of atmospheric NO x concentration; instead the associated high particle growth rates and high OOM concentration during the lockdown period were mostly caused by the enhanced atmospheric oxidative capacity. Background: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a myeloid dendritic cell disorder frequently affecting children more than adults. The presentation of LCH varies with age, however, the clinical characteristics and genetic profiles of adolescent LCH remain elusive. To address the knowledge gap, we performed a single-centre retrospective study of 36 adolescent LCH patients aged between 14 and 17 years at Peking Union Medical College Hospital.Results: At the time of diagnosis, 10 patients were classified as unifocal single system LCH (27.8%), 2 patients had pulmonary single system LCH (5.6%), 5 patients had multifocal single system LCH with bone involvement (13.9%), and 19 patients had multisystem LCH (52.8%). The most prevalent involvement in multisystem patients was the pituitary gland (78.9%), followed by the bone (42.1%), lung (42.1%), and lymph nodes (42.1%). Eight (42.1%) patients had risk organ involvement. BRAFN486_P490 was detected in 50% of patients who underwent next generation sequencing, and BRAFV600E was detected in one patient. Chemotherapies were the first line treatment in 24 patients. One patient died and thirteen patients relapsed during the follow-up. The estimated 5-year OS rate and EFS rate were 94.7% and 59.0%, respectively.Conclusions: In this study, we report a large series of adolescent LCH patients. The clinical characteristics of adolescent LCH patients may be close to adult LCH. Compared with pediatric cases, adolescent LCH tends to have more pituitary lesions and pulmonary involvement, fewer skin and hematopoietic involvement, a higher frequency of BRAF deletion mutation, and a lower frequency of BRAFV600E mutation. As one of the least understood aerosol processes, nucleation can be a dominant source of atmospheric aerosols. Sulfuric acid (SA)-amine binary nucleation with dimethylamine (DMA) has been recognized as a governing mechanism in the polluted continental boundary layer. Here we demonstrate the importance of trimethylamine (TMA) for nucleation in the complex atmosphere and propose a molecular-level SA-DMA-TMA ternary nucleation mechanism as an improvement upon the conventional binary mechanism. Using the proposed mechanism, we could connect the gaseous amines to the SA-amine cluster signals measured in the atmosphere of urban Beijing. Results show that TMA can accelerate the SA-DMA-based new particle formation in Beijing by 50–100%. Considering the global abundance of TMA and DMA, our findings imply comparable importance of TMA and DMA to nucleation in the polluted continental boundary layer, with probably higher contributions from TMA in polluted rural environments and future urban environments with controlled DMA emissions. New particle formation (NPF) and growth are a major source of atmospheric fine particles. In polluted urban environments, NPF events are frequently observed with characteristics distinct from those in clean environments. Here we simulate NPF events in urban Beijing with a discrete-sectional model that couples cluster dynamics and multicomponent particle growth. In the model, new particles are formed by sulfuric acid–dimethylamine nucleation, while particle growth is driven by particle coagulation and the condensation of sulfuric acid, its clusters, and oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs). A variable simulation domain in the particle size space is applied to isolate newly formed particles from preexisting ones, which allows us to focus on new particle formation and growth rather than the evolution of particles of non-NPF origin. The simulation yields a rich set of information including the time-dependent NPF rates, the cluster concentrations, the particle size distributions, and the time- and size-specific particle chemical compositions. These can be compared with the field observations to comprehensively assess the simulation–observation agreement. Sensitivity analysis with the model further quantifies how metrics of NPF events (e.g., particle survival probability) respond to model input variations and serves as a diagnostic tool to pinpoint the key parameter that leads to simulation–observation discrepancies. Seven typical NPF events in urban Beijing were analyzed. We found that with the observed gaseous precursor concentrations and coagulation sink as model inputs, the simulations roughly captured the evolution of the observed particle size distributions; however, the simulated particle growth rate was insufficient to yield the observed particle number concentrations, survival probability, and mode diameter. With the aid of sensitivity analysis, we identified under-detected OOMs as a likely cause for the discrepancy, and the agreement between the simulation and the observation was improved after we modulated particle growth rates in the simulation by adjusting the abundance of OOMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The residential population of an area is an incomplete measure of the number of people that are momentarily present in the area, and of limited value as an indicator of exposure to the risk of crime. By accounting for the mobility of the population, measures of ambient population better reflect the momentary presence of people. They have therefore become an alternative indicator of exposure to the risk of crime. This study considers the heterogeneity of the ambient population by distinguishing residents, employees and visitors as different categories, and explores their differential impact on thefts, both on weekdays and weekends. Methods: We analyze one-year of police recorded thefts across 2104 1 km2 grid cells in a central area in Beijing, China. Controlling for the effects of attractiveness, accessibility, and guardianship, we estimate a series of negative binominal models to investigate the differential effects of the three groups (residents, employees and visitors) in the ambient population on crime frequencies, both on weekdays and during weekends and holidays. Results: Overall, larger ambient populations imply larger theft frequencies. The effect of visitors is stronger than the effects of residents and employees. The effects of residents and employees vary over the course of the week. On weekdays, the presence of residents is more important, while the reverse holds true during weekends and holidays. Discussion: The effects of ambient population on thefts vary by its composition in terms of social roles. The larger role of visitors is presumably because in addition to being potential victims, residents and employees may also exercise informal social control. In addition, they spend more time indoors than where risk of theft is lower, while visitors might spend more time outdoors and may also bring about greater anonymity and weaken informal social control. The high concentration of fine particles and gaseous pollutants makes polluted areas, such as the urban setting of North China Plain (NCP) of China, a different environment for new particle formation (NPF) compared to many clean regions. Such conditions also hold for other polluted environments in this region (for instance, the rural area of NCP), yet the underlying mechanisms for NPF remain less understood, owing to the limited observations of particles in the sub -3 nm range. Comprehensive measurements, particularly covering the particle number size distribution down to 1.3 nm, were conducted at a rural background site of Gucheng (GC) in the North China Plain (NCP) from 12 November to 24 December 2018. In total, five NPF events during the 39 effective days of measurements for the campaign were identified, with the mean particle nucleation rate (J1.3) and growth rate (GR 1.3–2.4) being 22.0 cm -3 s -1 and 3.9 nm h -1 , respectively. During these 5 d, NPF concurrently occurred at an urban site in Beijing. Sharing similar sources and transport paths of air masses arriving at our site to that of urban Beijing, we hypothesize that NPF events during these days in this region might be a regional phenomenon. The simultaneous occurrence of NPF in both places implies that H 2 SO 4 -amine nucleation, concluded for urban Beijing there, could probably be the dominating mechanism for NPF at our rural site. The higher concentration of sulfuric acid during many non-event days compared to that of event days indicates that the content of sulfuric acid may not necessarily lead to NPF events under current atmosphere. Only when the condensation sink or coagulation sink was significantly lowered, atmospheric NPF occurred, implying that condensation sinks (CSs) and coagulation sinks (CoagSs) are the dominating factors controlling the occurrence of NPF for the present rural environment of the NCP, which is quite similar to the feature seen in urban Beijing. Background: With the measles vaccine coverage rate gradually increasing, adult patients' epidemiological and clinical characteristics have changed. Aims: To analyze the clinical characteristics of adult measles patients in Beijing Youan Hospital. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 818 patients diagnosed with measles at Beijing Youan Hospital between June 2010 and October 2021. We divided all hospitalized patients into two demographics groups, using 14 years of age as the cut-off. Results: Of the adult inpatients, 110 (74.83%) were aged 20–40. There was an overall peak incidence in 2014, and yearly peaks came in April. Fever, cough, erythema, and Koplik's spots were present in 79.59%, 82.1%, 99.3%, and 59.8% of the adult group, respectively, compared to 75.26%, 92.0%, 99.9%, and 39.0% of the pediatric group. Decreased lymphocytes and hepatic impairment were common in adults. The adult group's median level of C-reactive protein was higher than that of the pediatric group (p < 0.05). The positive rate of measles antibody (IgM) detection was 64.6% in the adults and 78.8% in the pediatric group (p < 0.05). Of the adults, 46.9%, 8.8%, and 66% had pneumonia, gastroenteritis, and antibiotic use, compared to 89.6%, 2.7%, and 83.2% of the pediatric patients. The duration of symptoms before admission and the average length of hospital stay was approximately six days in both groups. Conclusions: Koplik's spots are more likely to be detected by clinicians in adult patients admitted to the hospital. Active surveillance is helpful for adults who are negative for IgM on admission. Although the proportion of adult measles patients with liver injury is high, the disease is generally mild. Measles significantly impacts peripheral blood lymphocytes in adults, but adults are at lower risk of concurrent pneumonia than the pediatric group. Clinicians need to pay attention to the appropriate use of antibiotics. Expanding the coverage of the measles vaccination in high-risk areas is beneficial for preventing measles in adults. To study the residual settlement of goaf's law and prediction model, we investigated the Mentougou mining area in Beijing as an example. Using MATLAB software, the wavelet threshold denoising method was used to optimize measured data, and the grey model (GM) and feed forward back propagation neural network model (FFBPNN) were combined. A grey feed forward back propagation neural network (GM-FFBPNN) model based on wavelet denoising was proposed, the prediction accuracy of different models was calculated, and the prediction results were compared with original data. The results showed that the prediction accuracy of the GM-FFBPNN was higher than that of the individual GM and FFBPNN models. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the combined model was 7.39%, the root mean square error (RMSE) was 49.01 mm, the scatter index (SI) was 0.06%, and the BIAS was 2.42%. The original monitoring data were applied to the combination model after wavelet denoising, and MAPE and RMSE were only 1.78% and 16.05 mm, respectively. Compared with the combined model before denoising, the prediction error was reduced by 5.61% and 32.96 mm. Thus, the combination model optimized by wavelet analysis had a high prediction accuracy, strong stability, and accorded with the law of change of measured data. The results of this study will contribute to the construction of future surface engineering in goafs and provide a new theoretical basis for similar settlement prediction engineering, which has strong popularization and application value. Atmospheric cluster ions are important constituents in the atmosphere, and their concentrations and compositions govern their role in atmospheric chemistry. However, there is currently limited quantitative research on atmospheric ion compositions, sources, and sinks, especially in the urban atmosphere where pollution levels and human populations are intense. In this study, we measured the compositions of negative cluster ions and neutral molecules using an atmospheric pressure interface high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer (APi-TOF) and a chemical ionization mass spectrometer in urban Beijing. Quantitative analysis of cluster ions was performed by their comparison with condensation sink (CS), reagent ions, and neutral molecules. We demonstrate the feasibility of quantifying cluster ions with different compositions using in situ-measured ion mobility distributions from a neutral cluster and air ion spectrometer (NAIS). The median concentration of negative cluster ions was 85 (61–112 for 25 %–75 %) cm -3 during the measurement period, which was negatively correlated with CS. The negative cluster ions mainly consisted of inorganic nitrogen-containing ions, inorganic sulfur-containing ions, and organic ions in the form of adducts with NO 3- or HSO 4-. The CHON-related organic ions accounted for over 70 % of the total organic ions. Although the molecules clustered with NO 3- and HSO 4- had similar compositions, we found that HSO 4- clustered more efficiently with CHO and CHON nonNPs species (CHON excluding nitrated phenols), while NO 3- clustered more efficiently with nitrated phenols (CHON NPs). Additionally, most organic ions were positively correlated with neutral molecules, resulting in similar diurnal cycles of organic ions and neutral molecules. However, an exception was found for CHON NPs , the concentration of which is also significantly influenced by the reagent ions NO 3-. The charge fractions are generally higher for molecules with higher molecular weight and a higher oxidation state, and the opposite diurnal variations in charging fractions between H 2 SO 4 and organic species indicate a charging competition between them. Finally, we choose HSO 4- and C 3 H 3 O 4- as representatives to calculate the contribution of different formation and loss pathways. Background and aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was proposed to substitute NAFLD in 2020. This new term highlights the systematic metabolic disturbances that accompany fatty liver. We evaluated the correlations between MAFLD and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis (SCA) based on a nationwide health examination population in China. Methods: We performed a nationwide cross-sectional population and a Beijing retrospective cohort from 2009 to 2017. SCA was defined as elevated carotid intima-media thickness. The multivariable logistic and Cox models were used to analyze the association between MAFLD and SCA. Results: 153,482 participants were included in the cross-sectional study. MAFLD was significantly associated with SCA in fully adjusted models, with an odds ratio of 1.66; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.62-1.70. This association was consistent in the cohort, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.31. The association between baseline MAFLD and incident SCA increased with hepatic steatosis severity. Subgroup analysis showed an interaction between age and MAFLD, with a higher risk in younger groups (HR:1.67, 95% CI: 1.17-2.40). Conclusion: In this large cross-section and cohort study, MAFLD was significantly associated with the presence and development of SCA. Significant improvement in wastewater treatment is the most effective way for eutrophication control, especially in semiarid regions. However, its effect on the nutrient status and stoichiometry of the receiving water body has remained poorly considered and understood at broad temporal scales. Taking Guanting Reservoir (GR) in Hebei-Beijing (P. R. China) as an example, we present a study that links a continuous monitoring dataset for GR with corresponding estimates of human-induced nutrient discharges in its watershed from the year 2006 to 2019. We find that current GR belongs to strict P limitation and the faster decrease of TP than TN concentrations and continuous increase of TN/TP mass ratios in GR are attributed to the water restoration investment-induced declining of nutrient loadings. The improved municipal wastewater treatment capacity is mainly responsible for these significant changes, due to the higher removal efficiency of TP than TN in municipal wastewater. Given the potential ecological impact on aquatic biodiversity as well as ecosystem function of changes in TN/TP ratios and higher retention rate of TP (97.4%) compared with TN (93.1%) in GR, our findings highlight that future strategy for water pollution control should not only concentrate on more nutrient reduction efficiencies but attach importance to their stoichiometric balance to reduce the potential risk of phytoplankton blooms and toxin production during the water quality recovery of lakes or reservoirs. New particle formation (NPF) is a global phenomenon that significantly influences climate. NPF also contributes to haze, with pronounced negative impacts on human health. Theory and observations both show that nucleation is favored during clean days and inhibited during haze episodes due to a high pre‐existing condensation sink (CS). Here we show that the surprising occurrence of NPF during haze days in Beijing is associated with a high concentration of sulfuric acid dimers. With both field observations and model simulations, we demonstrate that downward mixing of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from the residual layer aloft enhances ground level SO2, which in turn elevates sulfuric acid dimer after rapid SO2 oxidation in the polluted air. Our results address a key gap between the source of SO2 and its atmospheric oxidation products during haze conditions in a megacity, Beijing, providing a missing link in a complete chain describing NPF in the polluted atmosphere. Recent studies have argued that atmospheric nucleation during haze episodes with high aerosol loading should not occur. In spite of this, we have observed intensive nucleation events during haze episodes in Beijing and found an unexpected high concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2), along with a decreased condensation sink (CS) owing to the development of boundary layer. The SO2 originates from emissions by tall stacks outside of Beijing and is subsequently transported downward from the morning residual layer to the surface, this contributes to peaks of SO2 during the day. New particle formation processes contribute significantly to the number concentration of ultrafine particles (UFP), and have great impacts on human health and global climate. Iodine oxoacids (HIO x , including iodic acid, HIO3 and iodous acid, HIO2) have been observed in pristine regions and proved to dominate NPF events at some sites. However, the knowledge of HIO x in polluted urban areas is rather limited. Here, we conducted a long-term comprehensive observation of gaseous iodine oxoacids and sulfuric acid in Beijing from January 2019 to October 2021 and also in Nanjing from March 2019 to February 2020, and investigated the contribution of HIO x to UFP number concentration in urban environments. HIO3 concentration is highest in summer, up to 2.85×106 cm-3 and 2.78×106 cm-3 in Beijing and Nanjing, respectively, and is lowest in winter, with a more prominent seasonal variation than H2SO4. HIO3 concentration shows a clear diurnal pattern at both sites with a daily maximum at around noontime, similar to the atmospheric temperature, radiation and ozone (O3) levels. HIO2 concentration has the same diurnal and seasonal trend as HIO3 but is overall about one order of magnitude lower than HIO3 concentration. Back trajectory analysis suggests that the sources for inland iodine species could be a mix of marine and terrestrial origins, both having peak iodine emission in warm seasons. While the contribution of HIO2 to particle growth is marginal in Beijing and Nanjing, our results demonstrate that HIO3 enhances the particle survival probability of sub-3 nm particles by about 40 % (median) and occasionally by more than 100 % in NPF events, suggesting HIO x are non-negligible contributor to UFPs in polluted urban areas. As the growth contribution from HIO3 and H2SO4 is similar on a per-molecule basis, we propose that the sum of HIO3 and H2SO4 could be used to estimate sub-3 nm particle growth of inorganic acid origin, in the polluted atmospheres with a significant amount of HIO x . Facing the increasingly strong demand for quality urban residential space, we studied the temporal needs for and satisfaction with residential space and public service facilities in communities and residential districts. In this study, data sources including geographical data from remote sensing satellite sensors, point of interest (POI), area of interest (AOI), and Baidu Maps from mobile phone sensors were used, and multi-source data process and analysis technologies were studied. A multi-level analytical method was established, which included the overall analysis of the allocation of community public service facilities, the evaluation of three categories of public service facilities in residential districts, and the analysis of population mobility and characterizations of residents. A functional mix index and a coordinated development index were adopted, and an indicator evaluation system based on methods of computing coverage and compliance was proposed. Taking the core area of Beijing as an example, we analyzed detailed allocation conditions of public service facilities, including their spatial and temporal insufficiencies. Our results show that residential districts in the core area of Beijing should consider safe sites and park layouts within the walking range of living areas, improve the quality of property services, and create a multi-functional living environment. In this study, we offer methods of studying the distribution of small-scale urban population structures and evaluating the quality of urban residential space; we thereby provide useful information for the planning and management of urban public service facilities. It is of great significance for coordinated development to analyze the urban expansion process and urban connection characteristics of urban agglomeration. We studied urban expansion extraction and urban connection analysis methods for urban agglomeration based on remote sensing satellite sensors of thematic mapper (TM), enhanced thematic mapper (ETM+), operational land imager (OLI) and visible infrared imaging radiometer suite (VIIRS), and urban area extraction and multidata analysis technologies. Using the relevant materials of domestic land cover data and nighttime light data combined with population and economic data, we analyzed urban agglomeration characteristics of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, which is one of the most important urban agglomeration areas in China. The expansion characteristics of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region from 2000 to 2021, as well as urban connection characteristics and their changes among the cities, and the three axes of Beijing-Tianjin, Beijing-Baoding-Shijiazhuang, and Beijing-Tangshan-Qinhuangdao were studied. The results show that: (1) the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region expanded largely during 2000-2021 and the comprehensive development gap narrowed. (2) A development trend has occurred around Beijing marked by an obvious border construction feature. The expansion speed of the capital metropolitan area was faster in the east and north and weaker in the southwest. (3) The connection of the three development axes was significantly strengthened since 2017, with two cores of Beijing and Tianjin. Some problems of uneven urban connection and uncoordinated development were noted in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and some suggestions have been addressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measurements of the molecular composition of organic aerosol (OA) constituents improve our understanding of sources, formation processes, and physicochemical properties of OA. One instrument providing such data at a time resolution of minutes to hours is the chemical ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer with filter inlet for gases and aerosols (FIGAERO-CIMS). The technique collects particles on a filter, which are subsequently desorbed, and the evaporated molecules are ionized and analyzed in the mass spectrometer. However, long-term measurements using this technique and/or field deployments at several sites simultaneously require substantial human and financial resources. The analysis of filter samples collected outside the instrument (offline) may provide a more cost-efficient alternative and makes this technology available for the large number of particle filter samples collected routinely at many different sites globally. Filter-based offline use of the FIGAERO-CIMS limits this method, albeit to particle-phase analyses, which is likely at a reduced time resolution compared to online deployments. Here we present the application and assessment of offline FIGAERO-CIMS, using Teflon and quartz fiber filter samples that were collected in autumn 2018 in urban Beijing. We demonstrate the feasibility of the offline application with a "sandwich" sample preparation for the over 900 identified organic compounds with (1) high signal-to-noise ratios, (2) high repeatability, and (3) linear signal response to the filter loadings. Comparable overall signals were observed between the quartz fiber and Teflon filters for 12 and 24 h samples but with larger signals for semi-volatile compounds for the quartz fiber filters, likely due to adsorption artifacts. We also compare desorption profile (thermogram) shapes for the two filter materials. Thermograms are used to derive volatility qualitatively based on the desorption temperature at which the maximum signal intensity of a compound is observed (Tmax⁡). While we find that Tmax⁡ can be determined with high repeatability (± 5.7 ∘ C) from the duplicate tests for one filter type, we observe considerable differences in Tmax⁡ between the quartz and Teflon filters, warranting further investigation into the thermal desorption characteristics of different filter types. Overall, this study provides a basis for expanding OA molecular characterization by FIGAERO-CIMS to situations where and when deployment of the instrument itself is not possible. Ground-level ozone pollution causes adverse health effects, and the detailed influences of meteorological factors and precursors on ozone at an hourly scale need to be further understood. We conducted an in-depth analysis of the phase relationships and periods of ground-level ozone in Shunyi station, Beijing, and contributing factors using wavelet analysis and geographic detectors in 2019. The combined effects of different factors on ozone were also calculated. We found that temperature had the strongest influence on ozone, and they were in phase over time. NO2 had the greatest explanatory power for the temporal variations in ozone among precursors. The wavelet power spectrum indicated that ozone had a periodic effect on multiple time scales, the most significant being the 22–26 h period. The wavelet coherence spectrum showed that in January–March and October–December, NO2 and ozone had an antiphase relationship, largely complementary to the in-phase relationship of temperature and ozone. Thus, the main influencing factors varied during the year. The interactions of temperature with NO2 significantly affected the temporal variations in ozone, and explanatory power surpassed 70%. The findings can deepen understanding of the effects of meteorological factors and precursors on ozone and provide suggestions for mitigating ozone pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The worsening volatility in the domestic and global hog and pork markets is a cause of concern for China's producers and government, as well as the global market. Cyclical price fluctuations have been caused by domestic small‐ and medium‐scale farmers' frequent exits and re‐entries into the hog market, which may have been partly driven by information asymmetry and risk resistance. This study examines the impact of a farmer field school (FFS) program aiming to deliver information and services that may facilitate hog farmers' decision‐making. Using survey data collected from 226 hog farms in Beijing, we employ probit models to examine the exit decisions of hog farmers based on their FFS participation and its effect on hog farm size. We find evidence that FFS participation significantly reduces hog farmers' exit rates, and that this effect increases as farm scale decreases. The findings suggest that such a program may be an effective policy tool to support and improve the resilience of small‐ and medium‐scale hog farms, thereby alleviating the volatility in China's hog industry and those of other developing countries where small‐ and medium‐scale hog farms play an important role.
