Background: Malnutrition is a common geriatric syndrome that is closely associated with adverse clinical outcomes and poses significant harm to older adults. Early assessment of nutritional status plays a crucial role in preventing and intervening in cases of malnutrition. However, there is currently a lack of measurable methods and biomarkers to evaluate malnutrition in older adults accurately. The aim of this study is to investigate the independent correlation between serum levels of amino acids and malnutrition in older adults, and to identify effective metabolomics biomarkers that can aid in the early detection of geriatric malnutrition. Methods: A total of 254 geriatric medical examination participants from Beijing Hospital were included in the study, consisting of 182 individuals with normal nutritional status (Normal group) and 72 patients at risk of malnutrition or already malnourished (MN group). Malnutrition was assessed using the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF). Demographic data were collected, and muscle-related and lipid indexes were determined. Serum amino acid concentrations were measured using isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The correlation between serum amino acid levels and malnutrition was analyzed using non-parametric tests, partial correlation analysis, linear regression, and logistic regression. Results: The geriatric MN group exhibited significantly lower serum aromatic amino acid levels (P < 0.05) compared to the normal group. A positive correlation was observed between serum aromatic amino acid levels and the MNA-SF score (P = 0.002), as well as with known biomarkers of malnutrition such as body mass index (BMI) (P < 0.001) and hemoglobin (HGB) (P = 0.005). Multivariable logistic or linear regression analyses showed that aromatic amino acid levels were negatively correlated with MN and positively correlated with the MNA-SF score, after adjusting for some confounding factors, such as age, gender, BMI, smoking status, history of dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and frailty. Stratified analyses revealed that these trends were more pronounced in individuals without a history of frailty compared to those with a history of frailty, and there was an interaction between aromatic amino acid levels and frailty history (P = 0.004). Conclusion: Our study suggests that serum aromatic amino acids are independently associated with malnutrition in older adults. These results have important implications for identifying potential biomarkers to predict geriatric malnutrition or monitor its progression and severity, as malnutrition can result in poor clinical outcomes. Scholars have done a lot of research on urban settlement, but it is difficult to give consideration to the temporal and spatial attributes of settlement at the same time in its display and analysis. Most of them focused on the analysis of regional settlement, single point settlement curve and settlement rate map at a certain time, but few combined time and space for collaborative analysis. Therefore, in this paper, 32 scenes Sentinel-1B SAR data are used to obtain settlement data of Beijing via PS-InSAR method. Secondly, combined with the temporal and spatial attributes of settlement results, the subsidence law revealed by using spatio-temporal cube slicing and attribute filtering. Finally, subsidence development trend and the detection of abnormal subsidence are explored by emerging hot spots (ESH) analysis. The experimental results show that the settlement funnel center in Beijing is mainly concentrated near the junction of Chaoyang district and Tongzhou district. The settlement range tends to expand. There are several local continuous subsidence areas in the settlement oscillating area. Spatio-temporal analysis makes the development trend of urban settlement more intuitive. Emerging hotspot analysis combined with Getis-Ord Gi* statistics and Mann-Kendall trend test could more effectively analyze the settlement trend of the study area and detect new potential settlement centers, so that to provide auxiliary decision-making for urban safety early warning and city development. During public emergencies, the level of public safety will be resilient and follow a process from decline to rise. Regarding the concept and influencing factors of public safety resilience, a three‐level public safety resilience framework that includes personal, community, and government levels was proposed in this study. It provided the overall metrics that used the resistance and recovery ability to describe the dynamic characteristics of public safety resilience as well as the resilience assessment indexes on three levels. In the context of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, this study applied the proposed framework in a case study on public safety resilience at the Beihang community, Beijing, China through descriptive statistics, structural equation model, and principal component regression analysis of questionnaire data. The data analysis results showed that community resilience was the most important of the three levels of public safety resilience. In addition, community resilience could improve personal resilience, and government resilience had a positive effect on community and personal resilience. Compared with the resistance ability, the recovery ability was influenced more by the operation and improvement of the community. This study is conducive to understanding and improving public safety resilience on the personal, community, and government levels and can help relevant parties improve their ability to respond to the COVID‐19 pandemic. Urban parks play an essential role in mitigating the effects of air pollution on human health in a healthy city construction process. However, due to the data limitations, little is known about the spatial distribution of real-time expressed air pollution-related health (APRH) across different urban parks and the contribution of the associated factors. To fill this research gap, this research was conducted based on social media Weibo data (Chinese Twitter) and other geographical data using semantic analyses and the Geo-Detector method by taking 169 urban parks in Beijing as the study area. The results showed that there were more Weibo items relating to APRH clustered within the third ring road and decreasing outward along the ring road. A total of 16 factors in three categories were introduced to analyze the driving forces of this spatial distribution. Accessibility was outstanding with a q-value of the number of subway stations (X14) as high as 0.79, followed by built environment and finally park attributes. Distinguished from those reports based on the traditional statistical data, this research demonstrated that although the urban parks improved the APRH, the exposure to air pollution also increased the health risks when visiting the urban park. Air pollution has brought about serious challenges to public health. With the limitations of available data, previous studies overlooked spatiotemporal heterogeneities in PM2.5-related health (PM2.5-RH) and multiple associated factors at the subdistrict scale. In this research, social media Weibo data was employed to extract PM2.5-RH based on the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) model, in Beijing, China. Then, the relationship between PM2.5-RH and eight associated factors was qualified based on multi-source geospatial big data using Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) models. The results indicate that the PM2.5-RH in the study area showed a spatial pattern of agglomeration to the city center and seasonal variation in the spatially non-stationary effects. The impacts of varied factors on PM2.5-RH were also spatiotemporally heterogeneous. Specifically, nighttime light (NTL), population density (PD) and the normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) had outstanding effects on PM2.5-RH in the four seasons, but with spatial disparities. The impact of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) on PM2.5-RH was significant in summer, especially in the central urban areas, while in winter, the contribution of the air quality index (AQI) was increased. This research further demonstrates the feasibility of using social media data to indicate the effect of air pollution on public health and provides new insights into the seasonal impacts of associated driving factors on the health effects of air pollution. With the application of big data in Earth observation, satellite imagery data are gradually becoming important means of observation for monitoring changes in vegetation, water bodies, and urbanization. Therefore, new satellite imagery data organization and management paradigms are urgently needed to fully mine the useful information from these data and provide new ways to better quantify and serve the sustainable development of resources and the environment. In this paper, a framework for processing and analyzing Chinese GF-1 satellite imagery data was developed using the latest technologies such as Open Data Cube (ODC) grids, Analysis Ready Data (ARD) generation, and space subdivision, which extended the data loading and processing capacities of the ODC grids for Chinese satellite imagery data. Using the proposed framework, we conducted a case study to investigate the spatial and temporal changes in vegetation and water mapping with GF-1 data collected from 2014 to 2021 covering the Miyun Reservoir, Beijing, China. The experimental results showed that the proposed framework had significantly improved temporal and spatial efficiency compared with the traditional scene-based data management approach, thus demonstrating the advantages and potential of the ODC grids as a new data management paradigm. To determine the effects of air pollution on crop yields, weather, air pollution, and maize and winter wheat yield data from 331 cities in China from 2014 to 2016 were collected and analysed. Furthermore, support vector regression and the crop growth model were applied to extrapolate the air pollution data of Beijing and Hetian and verify the relationship between air pollution and yield. Precisely, heavy air pollution usually occurred in North China, but less than moderate air pollution levels affected crop yields statistically insignificantly. Moreover, both the winter wheat and maize yields increased in moderate air pollution periods but decreased in heavy air pollution periods in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Importantly, a threshold value was necessary for the heavy air pollution periods to trigger a yield decrease. The threshold values of maize in 2015 and 2016 were 7 days and 5 days, respectively, while that of winter wheat was 10 days in both 2015 and 2016. Once the heavy air pollution periods exceeded the threshold value, both the winter wheat and maize yields decreased linearly with the periods. PM2.5 was the main air pollutant in Beijing in 2014, while PM2.5 and PM10 were the main air pollutants in Hetian in both 2015 and 2016. Regardless of whether the main air pollutant was PM2.5 or PM10, the simulated potential winter wheat yields by the crop growth model with moderate air pollution for the whole growth period were all higher than the yields under observed and heavy air pollution conditions. Pests can seriously threaten the safety of organic relics and historic buildings. Every year, the Palace Museum spends a large of money and time preventing and controlling pests, but there is still no a better systematic and targeted method. The Hall of Mental Cultivation is a representative and essential building in the Forbidden City. Through three years of pest monitoring, the species, quantity, and occurrence regularity of the major pests were investigated. During this time, more than ten species of insects were trapped. These included carpet beetles (Anthrenus picturatus hintoni Mroczkowski, 1952 and Thylodrias contractus Motschulsky, 1839), silverfish (Ctenolepisma longicaudata Escherich, 1905), powder-post beetles (Lyctus brunneus Stephens, 1830), booklice (Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel, 1931), spider beetles (Ptinus japonicus Reitter, 1877 and Gibbium aequinoctiale Boieldieu, 1865) and the case bearing clothes moths (Tinea pellionella Linnaeus, 1758), among which the Anthrenus picturatus was the primary pests. Abundant resources of organic relics, suitable temperature, humidity, and light environment, and cypress existence are favorable factors for the occurrence of pests, and analysis of these factors is helpful for further integrated pest management (IPM). The period with the most significant number of active pests in the Hall of Mental Cultivation is July and August, and April and May are the rapid growth period. Carpet beetles are the key pests that can affect the overall change trend significantly. It should combine with their living habits, the ideal treatment time and methods, to give them a better control. Fumigation should be done in July and August, while chemical spray should be done referring to the florescence of outdoor trees (March to June), and used of pheromone is reasonable preventative measures. Purpose: Propofol is commonly used as an intravenous anesthetic in surgical patients. However, its usage is associated with adverse effects. Auxiliary medication can reduce the dose of intravenous anesthetics. Hence, we investigated whether vitamin C could lower propofol dosage in elderly patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery. Patients and Methods: The trial was carried out in PLA General Hospital in Beijing, China. We enrolled patients aged ≥ 50 years who were undergoing unilateral total knee arthroplasty with total intravenous anesthesia combined with lumbar sciatic nerve block. The patients were randomly assigned to either the vitamin C (Vc) group (0.067 g/kg) or the control group (an equivalent dose of normal saline). Nerve block was done for all the patients before the general anesthesia. The same depth of anesthesia was maintained during the operation. We compared the propofol dosage and adverse events (eg hypotension) during anesthesia between the two groups. This study was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, www.chictr.org.cn , number ChiCTR-TRC-16010112. Results: There were significant differences in the total infusion dose (Vc group: 704.3 ± 188.6 mg; control group: 888.6 ± 232.7 mg; p = 0.016) and the average maintenance dose of propofol (Vc group: 5.8 ± 1.0 mg/kg/h; control group: 6.9 ± 1.6 mg/kg/h; p = 0.013). But there were no significant differences in the induction dose of propofol (control group: 90 mg, range 80– 115 mg; Vc group: 100 mg, range 90– 110 mg, p = 0.379) between the Vc and control groups. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the hemodynamics and the incidence of intraoperative hypotension. Multidrug resistance represents a growing threat to human beings, and alternative antimicrobial regimens to conventional antibiotic paradigms are being extensively searched to fight against multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB). Although the antimicrobial potency of silver nanomaterials (AgNMs) has been previously elaborated, their efficacy against MDRB still remains to be strengthened. Here, our data revealed that small-sized silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) are superior to conventional silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as robust antimicrobials against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). The core structure and surface ligands of AgNCs are crucial for the outstanding antibacterial activity of AgNCs. On the one hand, due to the presence of amphiphilic ligands, AgNCs are relatively prone to associate with the cell membrane and partake in endocytosis with targeted bacterial cells. Molecular dynamics simulations also corroborated this finding. On the other hand, the nanocluster structure of AgNCs led to strong peroxidase-like activity associated with massive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which contributes to their overall bactericidal potency. These outstanding features of AgNCs result in elevated bacterial killing efficacy by impairing the cell wall/membrane, promoting oxidative stress and attenuating pivotal cellular processes, e.g., ATP synthesis. Notably, AgNCs manifested great efficacy in treating P. aeruginosa-generated pneumonia in mice and increased the survival of infected animals, as well as exhibited excellent biocompatibility. Taken together, the results of this study pinpoint the great promise of AgNCs as new alternative therapeutics against MDR P. aeruginosa. Biomaterials: A silver bullet against drug-resistant bacteria A silver nanomaterial that can destroy drug-resistant bacteria has been developed by researchers in China. The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a major source of concern in global health. Silver has long been known to have antibacterial properties, and so scientists are returning to it as a possible agent to combat these multidrug-resistant bacteria. While silver nanoparticles have previously been shown to have good antibacterial activity, a team led by Nanfeng Zheng, Xiamen University, and Sijin Liu, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, have shown that small clusters of silver particles are even better. The researchers determined the optimal size, structure and surface properties of antibacterial nanosilver clusters. They used their nanoclusters to treat pneumonia in mice caused by the multidrug-resistant bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, increasing their survival rates. Our findings unearth the great importance of the size, core structure, and surface ligands in dictating the antibacterial activity of silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). Owing to the presence of amphiphilic ligands, AgNCs are more prone to adsorb the membrane and following endocytosis towards targeted bacterial cells, associated with membrane damage, as reflected by reinforced release of malondialdehyde (MDA). • The integrated use of dockless bike-sharing and public transport is analyzed. • Different modes of public transport (i.e., bus and subway) are considered. • Built environment variables are measured using multi-source big data. • Key variables are identified by a multiscale geographically weighted regression. • The effects of built environment on integrated use are diverse in different areas. The dockless bike-sharing (DBS) system offers a flexible feeder mode for connecting to public transport. Using multi-source big data, this study employs a multi-scale geographically weighted regression to analyze the effects of built environment characteristics on the integrated usage of DBS and public transport. Different modes of public transport (i.e., bus and subway) are further considered to explore these effects by defining two scenarios in Beijing, namely the bike-bus scenario and the bike-subway scenario. The results show that the number of points of interest around public transport stations (e.g., education and culture places, leisure services, and residential and accommodation services), length of main road, and length of cycle path significantly affect the integrated usage in the two scenarios. However, population density, number of workplaces, and number of shopping and eating places only play a vital role in the integrated DBS and bus system. Access to bus stops significantly impacts the integration of DBS and the subway. In addition, the effects of these built environment characteristics on the integrated usage are diverse in different areas. The objective of this study was to investigate the genetic basis of high level aminoglycoside resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates from Beijing, China. 173 A. baumannii clinical isolates from hospitals in Beijing from 2006 to 2009 were first subjected to high level aminoglycoside resistance (HLAR, MIC to gentamicin and amikacin>512µg/mL) phenotype selection by broth microdilution method. The strains were then subjected to genetic basis analysis by PCR detection of the aminoglycoside modifying enzyme genes (aac(3)-I, aac(3)-IIc, aac(6′)-Ib, aac(6′)-II, aph(4)-Ia, aph(3′)-I, aph(3′)-IIb, aph(3′)-IIIa, aph(3′)-VIa, aph(2″)-Ib, aph(2″)-Ic, aph(2″)-Id, ant(2″)-Ia, ant(3″)-I and ant(4′)-Ia) and the 16S rRNA methylase genes (armA, rmtB and rmtC). Correlation analysis between the presence of aminoglycoside resistance gene and HLAR phenotype were performed by SPSS. Totally 102 (58.96%) HLAR isolates were selected. The HLAR rates for year 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 were 52.63%, 65.22%, 51.11% and 70.83%, respectively. Five modifying enzyme genes (aac(3)-I, detection rate of 65.69%; aac(6′)-Ib, detection rate of 45.10%; aph(3′)-I, detection rate of 47.06%; aph(3′)-IIb, detection rate of 0.98%; ant(3″)-I, detection rate of 95.10%) and one methylase gene (armA, detection rate of 98.04%) were detected in the 102 A. baumannii with aac(3)-I+aac(6′)-Ib+ant(3″)-I+armA (detection rate of 25.49%), aac(3)-I+aph(3′)-I+ant(3″)-I+armA (detection rate of 21.57%) and ant(3″)-I+armA (detection rate of 12.75%) being the most prevalent gene profiles. The values of chi-square tests showed correlation of armA, ant(3″)-I, aac(3)-I, aph(3′)-I and aac(6′)-Ib with HLAR. armA had significant correlation (contingency coefficient 0.685) and good contingency with HLAR (kappa 0.940). The high rates of HLAR may cause a serious problem for combination therapy of aminoglycoside with β-lactams against A. baumannii infections. As armA was reported to be able to cause high level aminoglycoside resistance to most of the clinical important aminoglycosides (gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin, etc), the function of aminoglycoside modifying enzyme gene(s) in A. baumannii carrying armA deserves further investigation. Using broth microdilution method and PCR detection analysis, genetic basis of high level aminoglycoside resistance was investigated in the 173 Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates from hospitals in Beijing from 2006 to 2009. Abstract: A custom-made, on-site radioxenon sampling, separation and monitoring system was used to monitor atmospheric radioxenon concentrations in Beijing, released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after the earthquake of 11 March 2011. The results show that 133Xe concentrations ranged from 393 to 26mBq/m3 from 12 to 27 April 2011, and those of 131mXe were 84 and 40mBq/m3 on 13 and 15 April 2011, respectively. The highest dose rate caused by 133Xe was 2×10−5 mSv/yr, and the average 133Xe/131mXe ratio was 3.8±0.4. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The use of social media data provided powerful data support to reveal the spatiotemporal characteristics and mechanisms of human activity, as it integrated rich spatiotemporal and textual semantic information. However, previous research has not fully utilized its semantic and spatiotemporal information, due to its technical and algorithmic limitations. The efficiency of the deep mining of textual semantic resources was also low. In this research, a multi-classification of text model, based on natural language processing technology and the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) framework is constructed. The residents' activities in Beijing were then classified using the Sina Weibo data in 2019. The results showed that the accuracy of the classifications was more than 90%. The types and distribution of residents' activities were closely related to the characteristics of the activities and holiday arrangements. From the perspective of a short timescale, the activity rhythm on weekends was delayed by one hour as compared to that on weekdays. There was a significant agglomeration of residents' activities that presented a spatial co-location cluster pattern, but the proportion of balanced co-location cluster areas was small. The research demonstrated that location conditions, especially the microlocation condition (the distance to the nearest subway station), were the driving factors that affected the resident activity cluster patterns. In this research, the proposed framework integrates textual semantic analysis, statistical method, and spatial techniques, broadens the application areas of social media data, especially text data, and provides a new paradigm for the research of residents' activities and spatiotemporal behavior. The abnormal change in the global climate has increased the chance of urban rainstorm disasters, which greatly threatens people's daily lives, especially public travel. Timely and effective disaster data sources and analysis methods are essential for disaster reduction. With the popularity of mobile devices and the development of network facilities, social media has attracted widespread attention as a new source of disaster data. The characteristics of rich disaster information, near real-time transmission channels, and low-cost data production have been favored by many researchers. These researchers have used different methods to study disaster reduction based on the different dimensions of information contained in social media, including time, location and content. However, current research is not sufficient and rarely combines specific road condition information with public emotional information to detect traffic impact areas and assess the spatiotemporal influence of these areas. Thus, in this paper, we used various methods, including natural language processing and deep learning, to extract the fine-grained road condition information and public emotional information contained in social media text to comprehensively detect and analyze traffic impact areas during a rainstorm disaster. Furthermore, we proposed a model to evaluate the spatiotemporal influence of these detected traffic impact areas. • The relationships of fungal spore, cultivable and viable fungi in dust from HVAC system were explored. • Fungal culturability and viability in main segments of HVAC system were investigated. • The main factors of affecting culturable and viable fungi concentration were determined. • Predominant fungal species in deposition dust accumulation were identified. Fungal contamination in dust accumulated on inner surface of the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems has closely association with indoor human health. Dust samples were collected from 24 central HVAC system installed in office buildings in Beijing, China. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the distribution of fungal spore, culturable and viable fungi loading in five HVAC segments including the segments of fresh air, return air, mixture air, cooling and supply air. Fungal culturability and viability in dust samples collected from each sampling site were calculated and compared. The effects of environmental parameters and deposition dust loading on fungal concentrations, fungal culturability and viability were investigated by the Pearson correlation. In addition, predominant fungal species in deposition dust accumulation were identified, and its occurrence rates and relative abundances were also determined. This retrospective study at Beijing Children's Hospital (2020–2023) analyzed surgical procedures and complications in 24 pediatric hemophilia patients undergoing Totally Implantable Venous Access Port (TIVAP) insertion, primarily in the right jugular vein (RJV). We detailed the surgical process, including patient demographics and intraoperative imaging use. The choice of the RJV for TIVAP placement was influenced by its larger diameter and superficial anatomical position, potentially reducing risks like thrombosis and infection. Our findings support the RJV as a safer alternative for port placement in pediatric patients, aligning with current literature. Statistical analysis revealed no significant correlation between complications and baseline characteristics like weight and diagnosis type. However, the length of hospital stay and implant brand were significant risk factors for catheter or port displacement and removal. The limited patient number may introduce bias, suggesting a need for further studies with larger samples. Despite a 14.7 %–33 % complication rate and 5 port removals, the advantages of TIVAP, including reliable venous access, reduced discomfort, and treatment convenience, were evident. Most complications improved with symptomatic treatment, and there were no deaths due to port-related complications, underscoring the impact of TIVAP on improving pediatric hemophilia treatment. Background: A vaccine against COVID-19 is urgently needed for older adults, in whom morbidity and mortality due to the disease are increased. We aimed to assess the safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity of a candidate COVID-19 vaccine, CoronaVac, containing inactivated SARS-CoV-2, in adults aged 60 years and older.Methods: We did a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 1/2 clinical trial of CoronaVac in healthy adults aged 60 years and older in Renqiu (Hebei, China). Vaccine or placebo was given by intramuscular injection in two doses (days 0 and 28). Phase 1 comprised a dose-escalation study, in which participants were allocated to two blocks: block 1 (3 μg inactivated virus in 0·5 mL of aluminium hydroxide solution per injection) and block 2 (6 μg per injection). Within each block, participants were randomly assigned (2:1) using block randomisation to receive CoronaVac or placebo (aluminium hydroxide solution only). In phase 2, participants were randomly assigned (2:2:2:1) using block randomisation to receive either CoronaVac at 1·5 μg, 3 μg, or 6 μg per dose, or placebo. All participants, investigators, and laboratory staff were masked to treatment allocation. The primary safety endpoint was adverse reactions within 28 days after each injection in all participants who received at least one dose. The primary immunogenicity endpoint was seroconversion rate at 28 days after the second injection (which was assessed in all participants who had received the two doses of vaccine according to their random assignment, had antibody results available, and did not violate the trial protocol). Seroconversion was defined as a change from seronegative at baseline to seropositive for neutralising antibodies to live SARS-CoV-2 (positive cutoff titre 1/8), or a four-fold titre increase if the participant was seropositive at baseline. This study is ongoing and is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04383574).Findings: Between May 22 and June 1, 2020, 72 participants (24 in each intervention group and 24 in the placebo group; mean age 65·8 years [SD 4·8]) were enrolled in phase 1, and between June 12 and June 15, 2020, 350 participants were enrolled in phase 2 (100 in each intervention group and 50 in the placebo group; mean age 66·6 years [SD 4·7] in 349 participants). In the safety populations from both phases, any adverse reaction within 28 days after injection occurred in 20 (20%) of 100 participants in the 1·5 μg group, 25 (20%) of 125 in the 3 μg group, 27 (22%) of 123 in the 6 μg group, and 15 (21%) of 73 in the placebo group. All adverse reactions were mild or moderate in severity and injection site pain (39 [9%] of 421 participants) was the most frequently reported event. As of Aug 28, 2020, eight serious adverse events, considered unrelated to vaccination, have been reported by seven (2%) participants. In phase 1, seroconversion after the second dose was observed in 24 of 24 participants (100·0% [95% CI 85·8-100·0]) in the 3 μg group and 22 of 23 (95·7% [78·1-99·9]) in the 6 μg group. In phase 2, seroconversion was seen in 88 of 97 participants in the 1·5 μg group (90·7% [83·1-95·7]), 96 of 98 in the 3 μg group (98·0% [92·8-99·8]), and 97 of 98 (99·0% [94·5-100·0]) in the 6 μg group. There were no detectable antibody responses in the placebo groups.Interpretation: CoronaVac is safe and well tolerated in older adults. Air pollution has been proved to affect human health. Meanwhile, crop growth characteristics also vary with climate factors such as radiation and temperature. However, the relationship between crop growth and air pollution is still unclear and one important limitation for solving this issue is the lack of air pollution data for both previous and future conditions. To find out the effects of air pollution on crop yields, data about weather, air pollution, and maize and winter wheat yields of 331 cities in China from 2014 to 2016 were collected and analyzed. Furthermore, Support Vector Regression (SVR) and World Food Studies (WOFOST) model were applied to extend the air pollution data of two typical cities (Beijing and Hetian) and further verify the relationship between air pollution and crop yield. More exactly, heavy air pollution usually happened in North China but smaller than moderate air pollution levels affected crop yields insignificantly. Moreover, both winter wheat and maize yields increased with moderate air pollution periods but decreased with heavy air pollution periods in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Importantly, there was a threshold value for the heavy air pollution periods to trigger the yield decrease. The threshold value of of maize in 2015 and 2016 were 7 days and 5 days respectively while of winter wheat were both 10 days in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Once the heavy air pollution periods became longer than the threshold value, both winter wheat and maize yields decreased linearly with the periods. Furthermore, the SVR was proved as a useful tool to mimic weather factors from air pollutants. Specifically, it accurately simulated all weather factors for Beijing and Hetian from 2014 to 2016 (R2>0.6) except the radiation and vapour pressure of Hetian in 2015. In addition, PM2.5 was the main air pollutant of Beijing in 2014 while PM2.5 and PM10 were the main air pollutants of Hetian in both 2015 and 2016, respectively. No matter the main air pollutant was PM2.5 or PM10, simulated potential winter wheat yields by WOFOST with moderate air pollution for whole growth periods were all higher than yields of observed and heavy air pollution conditions. However, under water stress, due to the coupling effects of water and air pollution, simulated winter wheat yield with heavy air pollution was even higher than the observed weather condition, indicating further study should focus on the mechanism of complex effects of different environmental stress factors on crop growth. Buildings are considered as one of the most significant sources of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. However, few studies have estimated fine-scale energy consumption in the building sector, especially at the city level. This study develops a top-down approach based on statistical and geospatial data to estimate building energy consumption with a high resolution (1 km × 1 km) at the city level. Two representative cities, i.e., Beijing and Shanghai, were chosen to validate the practicality and applicability of the proposed approach. Highly detailed maps of building energy consumption and energy intensity with a resolution of 1 km were generated. The results reflect the spatial non-equilibrium characteristics of building energy use at fine scales. In addition, based on three urban morphology indicators (i.e., building coverage ratio, floor area ratio, and building height), varying relationships between building energy consumption and urban morphology in different cities are revealed. Due to rapid informatization and increasing urban sprawl, currently, metropolitan residents are facing challenges regarding spatial imbalance between their home, workplace, and activity locations, which seriously affects the quality of life and subjective well-being of urban residents. However, only a few existing studies have analyzed the relationship between home, workplace, and other activity spaces of urban residents and the influence mechanism of spatial separation of the three locations. In this study, we used the mobile phone signaling data of the residents of Beijing for May 2019 to explore the degree of mutual separation of the three locations, based on the identification of the homes, workplaces, and main activity spaces of over 2.3 million residents in Beijing. Leveraging these data, we discussed the influence mechanism of activity separation, in terms of the built environment and socioeconomic factors. The results indicated that the degree of the home-workplace separation was the highest, followed by the home-workplace-activity space separation, and the home-activity space separation was the lowest. Notably, the three types of spatial separations had significant spatial disparities. Attribution analysis indicated housing price as the dominant factor affecting the spatial separation of the residents, while the accessibility and location also having important effects. Moreover, the interaction of these factors had a stronger explanatory power for the spatial separation of the daily activity spaces of the urban residents. This study is the first to estimate the degree of spatial separation among the homes, workplaces, and other activity spaces of urban residents and analyzed their correlation using geographic context factors. : BackgroundChinese herbal medicines are commonly used to improve general health and well-being despite limited scientific data to support their efficacy. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine whether an herbal remedy that is used widely in China was associated with changes in quality of life, energy, memory, sexual function, and qi (the Chinese concept of “vital energy” that is important in general health).: MethodsResidents (n = 237) of Beijing, China, who were aged ≥60 years and had self-reported decreased energy, memory, or sexual function, were randomly assigned to take four tablets of a Chinese herbal formula or of an identical placebo, three times a day for 30 days. Patients returned for one follow-up visit after 30 days for assessment of all outcomes. The main outcome measures were changes in quality of life at 30 days as measured by the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) Mental and Physical Component Summary scales.: ResultsUse of Chinese herbs was associated with a small benefit in the Mental Component scale (difference of 1.9 points; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.1 to 3.6) and no benefit in the Physical Component scale (difference of –0.1 points; 95% CI: –1.7 to 1.5) as compared with placebo. A small improvement in the qi scale was no longer significant after adjusting for baseline differences in this score between groups. There was no improvement in physical performance, memory, or sexual function. The herbal product was well tolerated.: ConclusionShort-term use of a mixture of Chinese herbs was associated with a small benefit in one measure of mental health that is of unclear clinical importance. The study of thunderstorm outflows and their actions on structures is a dominant topic of wind engineering. This paper contributes to knowledge in this field through a systematic analysis of the thunderstorm outflows recorded by 9 anemometers installed at different heights along the 325 m high Beijing Meteorological Tower. Analyses are carried out through a directional decomposition strategy. The characteristics of a wide dataset of thunderstorm signals are analysed in a statistical environment coherent with the traditional one for synoptic winds; in this stage of the research, estimations of the mean wind speed and direction, the turbulence parameters and gust factor are carried out considering the records as disjoint from each other. Based on this choice, the results are compared with those obtained in the northern Mediterranean, providing a preliminary answer to the crucial question whether thunderstorms have similar properties in different areas, or, better, what of their properties are similar and what depend on the area itself. Besides to previous researches, the time evolution of the wind speed and direction profile is investigated with reference to a thunderstorm test case event.
