Post-harvest fruit rot caused by Alternaria species is one of the most important threats to the fruit industry. Post-harvest rot on sweet cherry (Prunus avium) fruit was observed in the fruit markets of the Haidian district of Beijing, China. The fungal isolates obtained from the infected sweet cherry fruits matched the descriptions of Alternaria alternata based on the morphology and multi-gene (ITS, endo-PG, and Alta1) sequence analysis. Pathogenicity tests indicated that ACT-3 was the most virulent isolate, exhibiting typical post-harvest fruit rot symptoms. Physiological studies revealed that the optimal conditions for the growth of ACT-3 were temperature of 28℃, water activity of 0.999, and pH of 8 with 87, 85, and 86mm radial growth of ACT-3 on a potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium, respectively, at 12days post-inoculation (dpi). Moreover, the fungus showed the highest growth on a Martin agar medium (MAM) modified (85mm) and a PDA medium (84mm) at 12 dpi. The proliferation of the fungus was visualized inside the fruit tissues by confocal and scanning electron microscope (SEM), revealing the invasion and destruction of fruit tissues. Alternaria mycotoxins, tenuazonic acid (TeA), and alternariol (AOH) were detected in five representative isolates by HPLC analysis. The highest concentrations of TeA (313 μg/mL) and AOH (8.9 μg/mL) were observed in ACT-6 and ACT-3 isolates, respectively. This study is the first to present a detailed report on the characteristics and proliferation of A. alternata associated with sweet cherry fruit rot and the detection of toxic metabolites. The main objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters for milk urea nitrogen (MUN) in Holstein cattle and to conduct a single-step (ss)GWAS to identify candidate genes associated with MUN. Phenotypic measurements from 24,435 Holstein cows were collected from March 2013 to July 2019 in 9 dairy farms located in the Beijing area, China. A total of 2,029 cows were genotyped using the Illumina 150K Bovine Bead Chip, containing 121,188 SNP. A single-trait repeatability model was used to evaluate the genetic background of MUN. We found that MUN is a trait with low heritability (0.06 ± 0.004) and repeatability (0.12). Considering similar milk production levels, a lower MUN concentration indicates higher nitrogen digestibility. The genetic correlations between MUN and milk yield, net energy concentration, fat percentage, protein percentage, and lactose percentage were positive and ranged from 0.02 to 0.26. The genetic correlation between MUN and somatic cell score (SCS) was negative (−0.18), indicating that animals with higher MUN levels tend to have lower SCS. Both ssGWAS and pathway enrichment analyses were used to explore the genetic mechanisms underlying MUN. A total of 18 SNP (located on BTA11, BTA12, BTA14, BTA17, and BTA18) were found to be significantly associated with MUN. The genes CFAP77 , CAMSAP1 , CACNA1B , ADGRB1 , FARP1 , and INTU are considered to be candidate genes for MUN. These candidate genes are associated with important biological processes such as protein and lipid metabolism and binding to specific proteins. This set of candidate genes, metabolic pathways, and their functions provide a better understanding of the genomic architecture and physiological mechanisms underlying MUN in Holstein cattle. Accumulating evidence suggests that an instant exposure to particulate matter (PM) may elevate blood pressure (BP), where cell-adhesion regulatory genes may be involved in the interplay. However, few studies to date critically examined their interaction, and it remained unclear whether these genes modified the association. To assess the association between instant PM exposure and BP, and to examine whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) mapped in four cell adhesion regulatory genes modify the relationship, a cross-sectional study was performed, based on the baseline of an ongoing family-based cohort in Beijing, China. A total of 4418 persons from 2089 families in Northern China were included in the analysis. Four tagged SNPs in cell adhesion regulatory genes were selected among ZFHX3, CXCL12, RASGRP1 and MIR146A. A generalized additive model (GAM) with a Gaussian link was adopted to estimate the change in blood pressure after instant PM 2.5 or PM 10 exposure. A cross-product term of PM 2.5 /PM 10 and genotype was incorporated into the GAM model to test for interaction. The study observed that an instant exposure to either PM 2.5 or PM 10 was found to be associated with elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP). On average, a 10 μg/m3 increase in instant exposure to PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentration corresponded to 0.140% (95% CI: 0.014%–0.265% , P = 0.029) and 0.173% (95% CI: 0.080%–0.266%, P < 0.001) higher SBP. However, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was not elevated as the PM 2.5 or PM 10 concentration increased (P > 0.05). A synergetic interaction on SBP was observed between SNPs in four cell adhesion regulatory genes (rs2910164 in MIR146A , rs2297630 in CXCL12, rs7403531 in RASGRP1 , and rs7193343 in ZFHX3) and instant PM 2.5 exposure (P for interaction <0.05). Briefly, as carriers of risk alleles in each of these four genes increased, an enhanced association was found between instant PM 2.5 exposure and SBP. Eleven perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were determined in tissue samples from farmed pigs and chickens (n=143) that were purchased in Beijing in March 2009. The total PFCs mean concentration was the highest in pig liver (3.438 ng g-1 wet weight (ww)), followed by pig kidney (0.508 ng g-1 (ww)), pig heart (0.167 ng g-1 (ww)), chicken liver (0.098 ng g-1 (ww)), chicken heart (0.050 ng g-1 (ww)), pork loin (0.018 ng g-1 (ww)), and chicken breast (0.012 ng g-1 (ww)). Among the PFCs analyzed, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was the predominant compound in viscera and muscle of farmed pigs and chickens. In addition, a strong linear correlation (r = 0.932) was observed between the concentrations of PFOS and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) in pig liver. Our preliminary conclusion is that there is little potential risk of exposure to PFCs via the consumption of these products in Beijing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of varying the ω6 to ω3 fatty acid ratio (ω6/ω3) of diets on growth performance, carcass traits, meat quality and fatty acid composition of breast muscle were investigated in Beijing-you chickens grown to 92 days. A total of 360 one-day-old female BJY chickens were fed diets containing 0%, 0.12%, 0.42%, 1.00% or 1.97% linseed oil replacing equal weights of maize oil to make dietary ω6/ω3 to be approximately 30:1, 20:1, 10:1, 5:1 and 2.5:1. Subcutaneous fat thickness and intramuscular fat content increased significantly in birds fed up to 10:1 ω6/ω3. a* values (redness of meat, dimension of the CIELAB-system) progressively increased as the diets contained increasing ω3 content, up to the 10:1 ω6/ω3.The changes in b* (yellowness of meat, dimensions of the CIELAB-system) were also significant but the pattern was almost the reverse of changes in a*. Shear force increased significantly as dietary ω6/ω3 was reduced from 30:1 to 5:1. Decreasing the dietary ω6/ω3 clearly decreased the content in breast muscle of C20:1 and C22:1, but increased that of C24:1. C20:4, C20:5 and C22:5, increased significantly by decreasing the dietary ω6/ω3, and the birds fed the 10:1 diet had higher contents of C22:6 than other treatments. This study has clearly demonstrated that decreasing the dietary ω6/ω3, increases the deposition of desirable ω3 and ω6 long chain PUFA in the edible tissue, thereby achieving nutritionally enriched meat. The editorial presents the author's thoughts regarding the health aspects of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The negative body image reinforced by Australian rowing team members Amber Halliday and Marquerite Houston is discussed, as well as the harmful practice of cutting weight undertaken by Olympic wrestlers and the controversy over the possibility that some Chinese gymnasts were underage.

Introduction While de qi, the acupuncture needling sensation, has been considered as an important component of acupuncture, little is known of the acupuncture patient's experience and beliefs about de qi in clinical settings. The aim of this study was to describe Chinese acupuncture patients' perceived sensations of, and beliefs about, acupuncture needling. Methods We developed a questionnaire and conducted a survey study at two time periods among 200 subjects at six outpatient acupuncture clinics in Beijing, China. Results Respondents were 55% female and had a mean age of 41 years. The most common types of needling sensations reported by subjects were the terms 'distended' (94%), 'sore' (81 %), 'electric' (81%) and 'numb' (78%). Eighty-nine percent of subjects reported that the needling sensation travelled away from the puncturing points or travelled among the needling points. Eighty-two percent of subjects believed that the needling sensation was very important for acupuncture treatment, and 68% further indicated that the stronger the needling sensation, the more effective the therapy. Eighty-one percent of subjects found the acupuncture process to be very comfortable and relaxing. Conclusion Chinese acupuncture patients described the common characteristics of de qi and its migratory nature. The sensations were believed to be important in producing clinical efficacy by most patients. Measuring the sensations described as de qi in future prospective studies will help us understand the degree to which this phenomenon has an effect on the physiological outcome and clinical response to acupuncture. There appears to be a limit to the number of sensations that can be discriminated by each individual patient, and further development of the questionnaire is planned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Usain Bolt broke the world record for the 100 m sprint. Just one year later, at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in Berlin he broke it again. A few months after Beijing, Eriksen et al. [Am. J. Phys. 77, 224-228 (2009)] studied Bolt's performance and predicted that Bolt could have run about one-tenth of a second faster, which was confirmed in Berlin. In this paper we extend the analysis of Eriksen et a!. to model Bolt's velocity time dependence for the Beijing 2008 and Berlin 2009 records. We deduce the maximum force, the maximum power, and the total mechanical energy produced by Bolt in both races. Surprisingly, we conclude that all of these values were smaller in 2009 than in 2008.
