A study conducted in Barcelona, Spain, explored the impact of changes in essential fatty acid-derived lipid autacoids on hepatocyte mitochondrial bioenergetics and metabolic efficiency in metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease. The study used transgenic mice with the fat-1 gene, which allows for the replacement of omega-6-polyunsaturated fatty acids with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The results showed that mice with the fat-1 gene had improved mitochondrial function, increased expression of oxidative phosphorylation complexes, and enhanced energy substrate utilization. The study highlights the importance of a lipid membrane composition rich in docosahexaenoic acid and its lipid autacoid derivatives for optimal hepatic mitochondrial and metabolic efficiency.
