Coal, extensively used in many countries across various industries, particularly as a fuel in the energy sector, poses significant environmental challenges due to process-related implications and their complex characteristics. A notable obstacle arises from its heterogeneous and complex submicron–nano-molecular structure, often leading to operational issues that are challenging to predict. This research aims to comprehensively assess the environmental impact of bituminous coal sourced from the Barapukuria Coal Mine (NW Bangladesh). This study focuses on elucidating the intrinsic properties of coal, with specific attention to its thermal behavior, structural composition, and surface morphology, aiming to understand the implications for energy production. Advanced techniques, such as TGA/DTG, CHNS-O, XRD, FTIR, XRF, ICP-OES, XPS, SEM with EDX, and TEM, were employed. Rigorous experimentation and analysis provided valuable insights into combustion and pyrolysis processes, illuminating the release of environmentally hazardous pollutants and their negative consequences associated with the utilization of Barapukuria coal for energy generation. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates coal bond breakdown at 573–933 K, releasing gases and liquids during the breakdown stage, resulting in mass loss from moisture evaporation, protogenic gas release, and volatile matter loss. Despite being of the bituminous type, the coal exhibits a mean carbon concentration of 78.24% and a low sulfur content of 0.42%, signifying relative environmental friendliness compared to high-sulfur coals, which is crucial for preventing acid rain. The average higher heating value (31.04 ± 0.74 MJ kg−1) and calorific value (30.20 ± 0.95 MJ kg−1) indicate that the studied coals have high energy potential. This study also suggests that optimizing thermochemical conversion for power generation may enhance energy efficiency and mitigate potential environmental impacts. The research findings contribute to the scientific understanding of coal thermal properties, serving as a foundation for informed decision-making in energy production strategies that prioritize both efficiency and environmental sustainability. Abstract: This paper uses two-dimensional boundary element method (BEM) numerical modeling to analyze the deformation and failure behavior of a coal seam and to understand the nature of gas flow into a roadway entering the Barapukuria coal mine in Bangladesh. The Barapukuria basin contains Permian-aged Gondwana coals with high volatile B bituminous rank. Three models (A, B, and C) are presented here. Model A assumes horseshoe-shaped geometry, model B assumes trapezoid-shaped geometry, and model C assumes horseshoe-shaped geometry coupled with a roof fall-induced cave generated by the break-up of rock materials along the vertical dimension of an igneous dyke. The simulation results show that there is little difference in strata deformation between models A and B. In model A, there is no horizontal tensional stress and the overall horizontal stress patterns are compressive, while the distribution and magnitude of vertical stress show higher tensional stresses on the immediate rib sides and floor. In model B, both horizontal and vertical stress distributions indicate low to medium tensional stresses on the immediate roof, floor, and rib sides, but compressive stresses are prominent toward the interior of the coal seam. Deformation vectors indicate that failure extends laterally to about 7.5 m around the excavation geometry. On the contrary, for model C, the distributions and magnitudes of horizontal and vertical stress show higher tensional stresses in both rib sides of the roof fall zone. The deformation around the dyke-induced perturbation zone affects a large volume of coal. The deformation vectors with high magnitudes are nearly horizontal and propagate laterally up to 30 m; whereas, low-magnitude deformation vectors extend about 25 m toward the roof and 20 m toward the floor. The vertical tensional displacement, which is concentrated in the floor and the left and right hand sides of the roof, propagates about 30 m on both sides and about 22 m in the floor. From these simulation results, it is thought that the extension of the dyke-induced perturbation zone toward the roof, floor, and rib sides of the entry roadway initially creates small tensional cracks that gradually grow into large-scale tensional features. These features could also be responsible for high concentrations of gas, which are emitted into the mine from fractured coals due to insufficient mine ventilation and low atmospheric pressure. To study the level of radioactivity concentrations from a coal-based power plant (Barapukuria, Bangladesh) and to estimate the associated radiological hazards, coal and associated combustion residuals from the power plant were analyzed by gamma-ray spectrometry with high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The results reveal that the mean radioactivity (Bq kg -1 ) concentrations in feed coal samples are 66.5 ± 24.2, 41.7 ± 18.2, 62.5 ± 26.3, and 232.4 ± 227.2 for U-238, Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40, respectively, while in coal combustion residuals (CCRs), they are 206.3 ± 72.4, 140.5 ± 28.4, 201.7 ± 44.7, and 232.5 ± 43.8, respectively. With the exception of K-40, all the determined natural radionuclides are considerably higher in the investigated feed coal and associated combustion residues as compared with the world soil and world coal mean activities. On the average, CCRs contains 3.10-3.37 times more natural radionuclides than the feed coal, except for K-40. The radioactivity of fly ash and bottom ash is fractionated, and ratio ranges from 1.40 to 1.57. The mean values of the radiological hazard indices in the coal and their associated residuals are 153.1 and 446.8 Bq kg -1 for radium equivalent activity, 0.41 and 1.21 for the external hazard index, 70 and 200.1 nGy h -1 for the absorbed gamma dose rate, 0.09 and 0.25 mSv year -1 for the annual effective dose rate, and 3.0 × 10 -4 and 8.6 × 10 -4  Sv -1 for the excess lifetime cancer risk, respectively, most of which exceed the UNSCEAR-recommended respective threshold limits. The outcome of this study suggests a potential radiological threat to the environment as well as to the health of occupational workers and nearby inhabitants from the examined samples.
