The presence of high levels of carcinogenic metalloid arsenic (As) in the groundwater system of Bangladesh has been considered as one of the major environmental disasters in this region. Many parts of Bangladesh have extensively reported the presence of high levels of arsenic in the groundwater due to both geological and anthropogenic activities. In this paper, we reviewed the available literature and scientific information regarding arsenic pollution in Bangladesh, including arsenic chemistry and occurrences. Along with using As-rich groundwater as a drinking-water source, the agricultural activities and especially irrigation have greatly depended on the groundwater resources in this region due to high water demands for ensuring food security. A number of investigations in Bangladesh have shown that high arsenic content in both soil and groundwater may result in high levels of arsenic accumulation in different plants, including cereals and vegetables. This review provides information regarding arsenic accumulation in major rice varieties, soil-groundwater-rice arsenic interaction, and past arsenic policies and plans, as well as previously implemented arsenic mitigation options for both drinking and irrigation water systems in Bangladesh. In conclusion, this review highlights the importance and necessity for more in-depth studies as well as more effective arsenic mitigation action plans to reduce arsenic incorporation in the food chain of Bangladesh. World's highest arsenic (As) contamination is well-documented for the groundwater system of southwestern region (mainly Jashore district) of Bangladesh, where the majority of inhabitants are underprivileged. To mitigate As poisoning in southwestern Bangladesh, numerous steps have been taken so far by the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Among them, digging deep tube wells and As removal by naturally deposited Fe(OH) 3 species are being widely practiced in the contaminated areas. However, these actions have been left unmonitored for decades, making people unaware of this naturally occurring deadly poison in their drinking water. Hence, water samples (n = 63, both treated and untreated) and soil samples (n = 4) were collected from different spots in Jashore district to assess the safety level of drinking water and to understand the probable reasons for high As(III) contamination. About 93.7% of samples were found to contain As(III) above 10 μg/L; among them, 38% contained above 50 μg/L. The study shows that current As(III) removal strategies in the study area are ineffective. In this connection, a simple low-cost As(III) removal adsorbent is proposed that can be prepared with very cheap and locally available materials like iron sludge and charcoal. The adsorbent was characterized in terms of SEM, EDX, and XPS. The optimal dosage of the adsorbent was investigated for real-life application concerning several vital water quality parameters. The Fe–C adsorbent exhibited a maximum As(III) removal efficiency of 92% in real groundwater samples. The study will allow policymakers for informed decision-making regarding water body management as well as enable the local people to avail As-safe water in a way that aligns with their economic factors. The contamination of groundwater by leached out arsenic has assumed an alarming proportion in several countries. Continued and prolonged ingestion even at a very low level can lead to serious arsenic-related diseases. Strong epidemiological evidence of arsenic carcinogenicity has forced the World Health Organization (WHO) to lower the maximum permissible contaminant limit (MCL) in drinking water to 10 ppb from earlier limit of 50 ppb. This has thrown a big challenge to the scientific community to devise efficient methods to purify contaminated water to such a high level. Though literature abounds in occurrence of groundwater contamination by arsenic and its removal from drinking water by laboratory techniques, millions of people continue to suffer, particularly in the developing countries like India (Bangladesh, West Bengal). Through a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the occurrence, causes, impacts and remedial measures, this article finds out what has gone wrong and what is to be done with special emphasis on membrane-based separation that seems to be highly promising in purifying arsenic-contaminated groundwater to a WHO-prescribed level. Abstract: Arsenic poisoning in drinking water is a health issue in many Asian countries including Bangladesh, India, China and Vietnam. In areas where the drinking water supply contains unsafe levels of arsenic, technologies to remove arsenic are of prime importance. Many technologies have been developed for the removal of arsenic. Among those reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are very promising techniques because they have the advantage of removing dissolved arsenic along with other dissolved and particulate compounds. So far, however, this kind of membrane filtration has needed bulky and sophisticated units, which are not suitable for application in the rural areas of developing and newly industrializing countries. Therefore the purpose of this work was to test a small-scale, commercially available marine RO desalinator with three different membrane modules on arsenic removal. The experiments were conducted with arsenic-spiked local tap water, using As(III) and As(V) up to feed concentrations of 2400 μg/L. The As(V) rejection was generally much better than the retention of As(III). With two of the tested membranes As(V) rejection was so high, that the permeate water quality complied with the WHO recommended maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 μg/L even at a feed concentration of 2400 mg/L. In the case of As(III) only feed concentrations below 350 μg/L resulted in permeate concentration lower than the MCL. The experiments should provide a basis for field tests on the ground in Bangladesh using natural arsenic contaminated groundwater. These field tests are currently running. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Arsenic in groundwater is a huge problem in numerous regions of the world. Many people are exposed to high arsenic concentrations and consequently risk getting ill or even die as a result of arsenic poisoning. There are several efficient technologies for the removal of arsenic but often these methods have disadvantages, e.g. high costs for installation and/or operation, the need for chemicals or the production of arsenic contaminated filter sludge. These disadvantages can make the application difficult, especially in poor regions. Under suitable ancillary conditions the subterranean (in-situ) treatment, which is often used for iron and manganese removal from groundwater, can also be applied for the removal of arsenic and can be a cost-effective treatment technology. A field trial was carried out with a low-cost in-situ treatment plant in West Bengal/India which is described in this paper, in order to investigate whether this treatment technology is also applicable under the boundary conditions there. As for the in-situ treatment technology besides oxygen no additives are required and no arsenic contaminated filter sludge is produced this technology could be a suitable method for arsenic removal especially in poor regions. The present study describes the synthesis of the iron(III) salt of a commercially available immobilized ligand, IMLIG, Octolig-21 and its use to remove arsenic from aqueous solutions. The synthesis was accomplished by treating an aqueous suspension of Octolig-21 with an equal weight of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate under nitrogen. The ferrous salt was then collected by sieving and allowed to oxidize to the iron (III) salt by exposure to air, and treatment with dilute sodium hydroxide converted the composite to the hydroxide. Using standard test water containing 300 ppb As and column chromatography, reduction of the arsenic concentration to 3 ppb or less in the effluent was achieved, using a pair of columns (4.5 cm id; 1780 mL and 2019 mL, respectively) in tandem. Subsequently, the Fe(III)-Octolig composite was tested for capacity, and it was calculated that with an input of 50 ppb As, it could take up to a year for the effectiveness to be exhausted. Maintenance of existing household arsenic (As) removal technologies are comparatively difficult due to the use of the sand beds as a filter. Moreover, pre-aeration of groundwater is avoided during filter operation that may affect the removal efficiency. This study investigated the effect of pre-aeration on the efficacy of simple iron nested ceramic filter (CF) for the removal of As and Fe from the natural groundwater. Five CFs at 5 households in the Bagerhat district of Bangladesh were tested for 31 days with pre-aerated groundwater (AGW system) and non-aerated groundwater (NAGW system). Pe-aeration of groundwater significantly improved (p > 0.5) the removal efficiency of As and Fe in the CFs. The filters effectively removed As in the groundwater from 203 - 231 μg/L to 29–40 μg/L in the AGW system whereas the effluent As were >50 μg/L in the NAGW system. Iron (Fe) was also removed effectively and the overall As and Fe removal efficiency were more than 82% and 99%, respectively in the AGW system. Removal of Mn and PO 4 –P were significantly enhanced achieving more than 56% and 99% removal, respectively in the AGW system. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis indicated that the oxidation of Fe2+ and As(III) and subsequent adoption/precipitation are the main processes controlling the removals of As and Fe in the CFs. Two stages oxidation of Fe2+ and As(III) in the AGW system facilitated to increase As and Fe removal efficiency. The findings of this study suggest that the iron net nested ceramic filters with pre-aeration step is an effective method and can be employed at the household level in As contaminated region. Arsenic is among the most hazardous contaminants present in drinking water. Recent increase in agricultural growth and fertiliser use in India and Bangladesh has led to the release of naturally occurring arsenic from the rocks, creating a major public health issue. A novel technology has been developed using naturally abundant laterite soil to filter arsenic, providing potable water to more than 5000 people. To upscale this technology and realise its full potential, a comprehensive understanding of the dependence of filter life on operating regime (flow rate, arsenic concentration and filter size) is essential. We present a mathematical model that characterises arsenic removal, circumventing the need for time-consuming experiments. The model incorporates inter- and intra-particle mass transport within the filter medium. The resulting model enables prediction of a filter lifetime in a specified role, such as on a domestic or community scale, and should assist in future filter deployment and maintenance.
