Search

Interest in examining climate change adaptation has arisen in many disciplines in the past two decades; however to date, sociologists have given only sparse attention to the issue. This is both a missed opportunity for sociologists and a detriment to the study of adaptation. In this paper, we set out the following research agenda: bringing core concerns of sociology into the critically important conversation of how society will respond to climate change. We identify five broad themes in which sociologists can begin their work on adaptation: (1) structures and resource access, (2) social cohesion and future planning, (3) constraints of social stratifications, (4) power and agency in decision‐making, and (5) justice in process and outcomes. After summarizing existing sociological work on adaptation and detailing our research agenda, we draw examples from our own work in Bangladesh to illustrate how this agenda might be taken up. In doing so, we point to several places where sociological insights come into play in questions related to development, organizations, expertise, migration, gender, and labor. We believe a robust sociological analysis can produce a clarified, reparative, and just conceptualization of adaptation that will contribute to the growing global discourse on the topic. Large number of people from villages in the India–Bangladesh borderlands are migrants to Indian cities, particularly to the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi. Migration from Cooch Behar, an industrially backward district in the northern part of the state of West Bengal in India sharing border with Bangladesh and the Indian state of Assam, has been a regular practice as subsistence agriculture fail to provide the landless agricultural labourers continuous employment and competitive wages. This paper is based on ethnographic study in Delhi NCR and the former 'Chhit Mahals' (as the former border enclaves of Bangladesh and India were called in Bengali) in Cooch Behar district, in the period immediately following their exchange, of historically marginal migrant households whose members work in the construction industry. With the implementation of the 1974 Land Boundary Agreement between India and Bangladesh and the finalisation of the India-Bangladesh land boundary, the former Chhit Mahals, that is border enclaves of Bangladesh and India, were exchanged between the two states in August 2015. The former Bangladeshi Chhit Mahals in Cooch Behar are now Indian villages, whose residents had opted for Indian citizenship. This paper explores migration from these former Chhit Mahals with a relational political economy perspective. It analyses both broader socio-cultural, economic, and political processes and interests and the migrants' own feelings which interact with migration to demonstrate how the migrant's labour value is determined at the intersection of identity, affect and the international border, with marginalisation of the migrants from the India–Bangladesh borderlands emerging as a product of layered struggles and a dynamic of continuous cultural reconstruction. The COVID‐19 pandemic has brought about significant changes to the the learning process, prompted by the shift away from traditional physical classrooms to virtual ones. With unequal access to remote learning technologies, there are concerns regarding undergraduate students' academic progress. A primary survey was conducted to create a composite learning score to quantify learning losses. A significantly higher learning loss is visible among students belonging to families facing income losses during the pandemic, and public university students. We find that compared to India, students of Bangladesh and Pakistan are affected more severely in terms of learning losses. The article also measures the extent of psychological distress and academic demotivation related to online learning. Mushroom cultivation in Bangladesh has been on the rise, however, their nutrient and heavy metal content is not well investigated. Herein, prevalent cultivars and strains of five mushroom species (Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus sajor-caju, Pleurotus citrinopileatus, Auricularia auricula and Ganoderma lucidum) were analyzed for their nutritional values (total ash, lipid, crude fiber, protein and carbohydrates) as well as metal concentrations using standard methods. This study was conducted at the Laboratory of the Biochemistry Department at Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, from January to December 2022. The proximate composition of mushrooms varied from 2.67-11.57%, 2.05-3.81%, 15.52-22.61%, 6.1-12.71% and 46.01-57.85% for total ash, lipid, crude fiber, protein and carbohydrates, respectively. The highest values of Fe, Mn, Zn, P, Ca, Mg, K, S and N were 315.87, 19.14, 267.96, 2.92, 1.07, 0.44, 4.62, 0.78 and 3.06 ìg/g, respectively. Remarkably, the highest amounts of heavy metals, Pb (5.65 ìg/g) and Cd (0.22 ìg/g) were found in Pleurotus citrinopileatus, while Cr (3.22 ìg/g) and Ni (1.65 ìg/g) were found in a variety of Pleurotus ostreatus. The findings revealed that heavy metal concentrations in two mushroom varieties exceeded the maximum permissible limit recommended by WHO/FAO. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive analysis comparing the nutritional value and metal content of popular mushroom species of Bangladesh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study aims to investigate depression, anxiety, stress, and fear of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated risk factors among Bangladeshi medical students. It also explored qualitative insights on mental health from medical students during the first wave of the pandemic. Methods: This mixed-methods study was conducted online in Bangladesh from June 2020 to September 2020. Participants were Bangladeshi medical students from the first year to the final year. The quantitative part included a structured online survey. One focus group discussion (FGD) was organized using the Zoom platform to collect qualitative insights from the students. To determine levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, the Bangla-validated version of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21) was used. A 7-item and Bangla-validated Fear of COVID-19 Scale, also known as FCV-19S, was used to explore the COVID-19-specific fear of the students. A semi-structured topic guide was used for exploring the qualitative insights of medical students’ perceptions of fear of COVID-19, mental health impacts during COVID-19, overall recommendations to support students, and the impact of the pandemic on the future of the medical curriculum. Results: The study reported that 51.20%, 59.40%, and 64% of the 406 respondents had moderate to severe stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, respectively, according to the DASS-21. The mean fear score for the COVID-19 scale was 19.4 (SD 6.4). Respondents with family members aged 50 years or older (B = 2.1; CI: 0.3-3.9) and those who had infected family members (B = 1.9; 95% CI: 0.1-3.7) exhibited a higher level of fear of COVID-19. Moreover, depression was associated with a history of having cancer among family members (AOR = 2.9, CI: 1.1-7.5), anxiety was strongly associated with having symptoms of COVID-19 (AOR = 2, CI: 1.3-3.2), and stress was associated with having symptoms of COVID-19 infection among family members (AOR = 1.9, CI: 1.3-3). Altered sleep was a potential risk factor for developing stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Manual thematic analysis of qualitative data generated four major themes, including the perception of fear of COVID-19, the perception of mental health impacts during COVID-19, the change in the medical curriculum along with the pandemic, and recommendations from the medical students to support the mental health concerns of medical students during public health crises like this pandemic. Qualitative findings showed that the participants experienced fear of their parents becoming infected by COVID-19, and this fear was more prominent in those who had their loved ones hospitalized. They were also stressed and anxious, with thoughts of death. Their fear also extended to their thoughts on academic progress and the effectiveness of online classes. Conclusion: A substantial proportion of medical students experienced mental health diffculties in Bangladesh. Appropriate interventions should be designed, and adequate support should be provided to the medical students to protect their mental health and wellbeing, considering their potential impact on the future health system in a low-resource setting like Bangladesh. Background: Barriers to healthcare access for women have a substantial influence on maternal and child health. By removing barriers to accessing healthcare, several sustainable development goals can be achieved. The goal of this study, based on the dominance analysis, was to examine how living standards and spousal education play role in removing barriers to healthcare access for women in Bangladesh. Methods: The study used the nationally representative Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS), 2017-18 data. A binary logistic regression model was applied for analyzing different types of health access barriers in the study. Additionally, a dominance analysis was conducted to identify the most responsible factors for removing barriers. Results: In Bangladesh, 66% of women faced at least one barrier in accessing healthcare. The results obtained from logistic regression and dominance analysis revealed that women's standard of living and spousal education explained the highest variation of having at least one barrier in accessing healthcare. Specifically, a high standard of living explained 24% of the total explained variation (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.52–0.62), while both spousal education accounted for 27% (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.45–0.54) of the total explained variation. The regression results also showed that women with higher standards of living as well as educated women having educated partners had lower odds of facing barriers in getting permission (OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.76-1.00 and OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.58–0.75) to go for advice/treatment, obtaining money (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.39–0.47 and OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.34–0.40), distance to a health facility (OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.55–0.66 and OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.65–0.76), and not wanting to go alone (OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.66–0.89 and OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.69–0.81) for getting medical advice/treatment. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest paying extra attention to the spousal education and living standard of women to strengthen and reform the existing strategies and develop beneficial interventions to enhance unhindered accessibility to healthcare facilities for women. Background Low- and middle-income countries bear a disproportionate burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) but often lack adequate surveillance to inform mitigation efforts. Colonization can be a useful metric to understand AMR burden. We assessed the colonization prevalence of Enterobacterales with resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, carbapenems, colistin, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among hospital and community dwellers. Methods Between April and October 2019, we conducted a period prevalence study in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We collected stool and nasal specimens from adults in 3 hospitals and from community dwellers within the hospitals' catchment area. Specimens were plated on selective agar plates. Isolates underwent identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing using Vitek 2. We performed descriptive analysis and determined population prevalence estimates accounting for clustering at the community level. Results The majority of both community and hospital participants were colonized with Enterobacterales with resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (78%; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 73–83; and 82%; 95% CI, 79–85, respectively). Thirty-seven percent (95% CI, 34–41) of hospitalized patients were colonized with carbapenems compared with 9% (95% CI, 6–13) of community individuals. Colistin colonization prevalence was 11% (95% CI, 8–14) in the community versus 7% (95% CI, 6–10) in the hospital. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonization was similar in both community and hospital participants (22%; 95% CI, 19–26 vs 21% (95% CI, 18–24). Conclusions The high burden of AMR colonization observed among hospital and community participants may increase the risk for developing AMR infections and facilitating spread of AMR in both the community and hospital. The relationship between everyday lives and the climate changed present is layered, complex, and deeply embedded in social context. In the Sundarban region of India and Bangladesh, the entangled web of development, anthropogenic climate change, and so-called climate change adaptation projects (such as concrete embankments, the hardening of coastlines, and brackish aquaculture) have interrupted natural adaptation processes and caused environmental degradation that negatively impacts those who live there. Scholars have called for better frameworks to link between everyday struggles and macro-level processes of climate change and development. Building on a long-term ethnographic engagement and existing theories of everyday adaptations to climate change, I utilize salinity intrusion as a case study showcasing the complicated interlinkages of climate change and development on daily life. I argue that there are three interlinked processes of increases and accumulations of salt: naturally occurring, exacerbated by capitalism and development, and exacerbated by climate change. Residents describe the consequences of salinity intrusion as they materialize in their bodies, evidence of the external imposition on their lives. I argue that although climate change is the cause of environmental transformation, it interacts with local conditions in diffuse ways that social science needs to pay attention to. Looking at the causes and consequences of salinity intrusion in tandem allows us to see past hegemonic thought and makes way for understanding climate adaptation outside of the constraints of neoliberal development paradigms. With his Nobel Prize award money, Amartya Sen set up the Pratichi Trust which carries out research, advocacy and experimental projects in basic education, primary health care, and women's development in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Professor Sen himself took active interest in this work--helping set the agenda, looking at the evidence from research, and engaging in advocacy. The present article is based on Sen's introduction to a Pratichi study of primary education in West Bengal, released in December 2009, which compares the results of surveys conducted at an interval of almost a decade. Sen's significant findings and insightful observations and recommendations have relevance much beyond West Bengal.

Simple Summary: Globally, rivers are continuously being polluted because of anthropogenic discharge, especially in Asian countries experiencing rapid urban, industrial and agricultural developments. Exceedingly high concentrations of nutrients and toxic metals have been detected in most Asian rivers, which has led to major environmental and human health concerns that demand the detoxification of polluted river water. This study investigated and compared the efficacy of microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris) and cyanobacteria (Anabaena variabilis) as a low-cost and eco-friendly approach to remediate polluted river water. The results revealed that both microalgae and cyanobacteria have the potential to reduce the pollutant load from the raw river water, but the removal efficiency is species dependent. The studied microalgal and cyanobacterial species are excellent candidates for polluted water and/or wastewater treatment as well as producers of energy-rich biomass that can be further processed to produce biofuel, biodiesel, and other bio-hydrocarbons. This study investigated the phycoremediation abilities of Chlorella vulgaris (microalga) and Anabaena variabilis (cyanobacterium) for the detoxification of polluted river water. Lab-scale phycoremediation experiments were conducted for 20 days at 30 °C using the microalgal and cyanobacterial strains and water samples collected from the Dhaleswari river in Bangladesh. The physicochemical properties such as electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), hardness ions, and heavy metals of the collected water samples indicated that the river water is highly polluted. The results of the phycoremediation experiments demonstrated that both microalgal and cyanobacterial species significantly reduced the pollutant load and heavy metal concentrations of the river water. The pH of the river water was significantly raised from 6.97 to 8.07 and 8.28 by C. vulgaris and A. variabilis, respectively. A. variabilis demonstrated higher efficacy than C. vulgaris in reducing the EC, TDS, and BOD of the polluted river water and was more effective at reducing the pollutant load of SO42− and Zn. In regard to hardness ions and heavy metal detoxification, C. vulgaris performed better at removing Ca2+, Mg2+, Cr, and Mn. These findings indicate that both microalgae and cyanobacteria have great potential to remove various pollutants, especially heavy metals, from the polluted river water as part of a low-cost, easily controllable, environmentally friendly remediation strategy. Nevertheless, the composition of polluted water should be assessed prior to the designing of microalgae- or cyanobacteria-based remediation technology, since the pollutant removal efficiency is found to be species dependent. Background and Aims: Problematic internet use (PIU) by children and adolescents is a concern for many parents. Several factors, including students' education level, the method of instruction, the dependence on the internet, and their intended use of the internet, could all be contributing factors to PIU and depression. Disturbed mental health may be attributed to the cancellation of physical education classes because of the COVID‐19 outbreak. This study aimed to assess the association of COVID‐19 pandemic with PIU and depressive symptoms in adolescent students. Methods: We performed this cross‐sectional study among 491 school‐going adolescents of 10 to 16 years. Self‐administered questionnaires were applied to collect sociodemographic information and the internet usage pattern of the participants. We measured the prevalence of PIU and depressive symptoms using the PIU questionnaire (PIUQ‐SF‐6) and patient health questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9). Results: The estimations of the risk group for PIU and depressive symptoms among school‐going adolescents were 80.04% and 77.80%, respectively. The latent profiling of PIU scores for obsession, neglect, and control sub‐groups were 5.82, 6.12, and 6.35, respectively. Moreover, we observed mild, moderate, and severe depressive symptoms in 48.68%, 27.70%, and 1.43% of cases. Age, education level, medium of education, financial impression, internet connection, the device used, the purpose for internet use, and the living status of respondents were significantly associated with the PIU. Reported mental health issues was associated with education level, medium of education, financial impression, and internet connection. Conclusion: The present study revealed an association of PIU and depressive symptoms with sociodemographic factors and internet usage patterns. Therefore, these results might have practical implications in clinical psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy. Background: Shiga toxin‐producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are zoonotic foodborne pathogens and a significant concern with the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Close human contact might have a higher chance of being transmitted to humans from sheep if the sheep population is a potential reservoir of antimicrobial‐resistant STEC. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the sheep population in rural Bangladesh for antimicrobial‐resistant STEC. Methods: We screened 200 faecal samples collected from sheep in three Upazilas from the Chattogram district. Randomisation of sampling was not performed due to the smaller flock size (two to six animals per smallholding). Phenotypically positive E. coli isolates were examined for two Shiga toxin‐producing genes – stx1 and stx2. PCR‐positive STEC isolates were investigated for the presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes – blaTEM, sul1 and sul2. Results: In total, 123 of the 200 tested samples were confirmed positive E. coli using culture‐based methods. PCR results show 17 (13.8%) E. coli isolates harboured ≥ one virulent gene (stx1 or/and stx2) of STEC. The AMR profile of STEC isolates was determined utilising the disc diffusion method. Of the STEC isolates, 82, 76, 71 and 71% were susceptible to chloramphenicol, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin and ampicillin. In contrast, 47% of isolates were resistant to trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, and 41% were resistant to amoxicillin. In addition, six of the tested STEC isolates exhibited the blaTEM gene; eight STEC isolates had the sul1 gene, and the sul2 gene was detected in ten STEC isolates. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this study is the first to reveal a substantial percentage of STEC isolated from sheep in rural Bangladesh harbouring AMR genes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past two decades, there has been a global rise in the prevalence of waterpipe tobacco smoking. Waterpipe tobacco smoking involves the inhalation of heated tobacco smoke after passing through water, and it has been associated with an identified dependence effect similar to that found with cigarette smoking. Despite the popularity of waterpipe tobacco among youth (and in particular, university students) in many countries, detailed data of its usage are lacking in Bangladesh. Therefore, the present study was conducted to explore waterpipe tobacco smoking behavior and normative beliefs among university students in Bangladesh and to assess the factors associated with waterpipe tobacco use. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was carried out among 340 Bangladeshi university students (64.4% male; mean age 21.6 years). Among participants, 13.5% reported they had ever smoked tobacco from a waterpipe and 9.4% had it in past 30 days. Among past 30-day users, 72% were categorized as having waterpipe smoking dependence (n = 23). No females in the sample had ever smoked using a waterpipe. Maternal occupation, monthly expenditure, and regular smoking status were major predominant factors associated with waterpipe smoking behavior of the students. The study is of existential value given that there are no prior studies ever carried out in Bangladesh previously. Recommendations are provided based on the study's findings, particularly in relation to what action is needed from universities in Bangladesh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 1971 War of Bangladesh witnessed one of the worst incidents of gender-based violence in history in which women's bodies became the site for asserting victory or dominance. The newly formed nation focused on the image of the violated women and was united in its thirst for revenge against Pakistani perpetrators. The nation bequeathed the apparently reverential title of birangana (brave women) to the rape survivors in recognition of their "sacrifice." However, even though the image of the birangana circulated in the public sphere in various forms, the narrative of the women themselves got suppressed under national legend-building. This article studies Nekre Aranya, a novel written in Bengali by Shaukat Osman in 1972 in the immediate aftermath of the war. I argue that Nekre Aranya, although it depicts the horrors of wartime rape camps, does so from a distinctly male perspective on sexual violence, where nationalist emotions determine the trajectory of the narrative. This article examines the often simplistic binaries created by early war novels written by male writers such as Osman. It argues that since Nekre Aranya was written at a time when the nation was rebuilding itself after wartime devastation, the figure of the violated woman in this novel serves as an image that evokes deep nationalistic feelings. This article studies the intriguing conclusion of the novel, in which many women commit suicide within the rape camp and analyzes the reason behind the decision to eliminate violated women from the novel's plot. Background and Aims: Essential newborn care (ENC) practices play an important role in reducing the risk of infant mortality and morbidity. Therefore, more studies are needed on ENC practices. Skilled maternal healthcare can be a good strategy to increase the practice. Learn about the independent and joint effects of skilled maternal healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth on newborn care practices. Methods: The study used a cross‐sectional data obtained from Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, 2019. To investigate the association between maternal healthcare utilization and good ENC practice (cord care, delayed bathing, and immediate breast‐feeding), χ2 test and t‐test in bivariate and binary logistic regression analysis, respectively have been performed after taking into account complex survey design. Results: Only about 24% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 22.95%–25.89%) women given birth at home in rural Bangladesh followed good newborn care practice. The results obtained from adjusted regression analysis showed that a woman was 24%, 49%, and 75% more likely of having good ENC practice if she received four or more skilled checkups during antenatal period only (adjusted odds ratios [AOR]: 1.24, 95% CI: 0.97, 1.60), received assistance from SBA during delivery only (AOR: 1.49, 95% CI 1.12, 1.97) and received skilled healthcare in both pregnancy and delivery (AOR: 1.75, 95% CI 1.13, 2.71), respectively compared to a woman who did not get an opportunity to receive skilled healthcare during pregnancy and delivery. Among the selected confounders, maternal age at birth, birth order, education of household heads and religion showed a significant association with good ENC practice. Conclusion: The study revealed that proper maternal healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth from skilled health personnel can improve the rate of ENC practices. For this, more training programs should be started, especially at the community level, and health promotion activities are needed to create awareness about efficient maternal healthcare practices. In this work, we emphasise the dynamical study of spreading COVID-19 in Bangladesh. Considering the uncertainty caused by the limited coronavirus (COVID-19) information, we have taken the modified Susceptible-Asymptomatic-Infectious-Hospitalised-Recovered (SAIHR) compartmental model in a Caputo fractional order system. We have also introduced public behavioural and government policy dynamics in our model. The dynamical nature of the solutions of the system is analysed and we have also calculated the sensitivity index of different parameters. It has been observed that public behaviour and government measures play an important role in controlling the pandemic situation. The government measures (social distance, vaccination, hospitalisation, awareness programme) are more helpful than only public responses to the eradication of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rising trend of Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) in the banking sector of Bangladesh epitomises a common phenomena of loan default that mostly arises from unwillingness to repay tendency of the borrowers who usually fit into the defined higher class of the society. An appropriate governance and control framework can effectively control this growing trend of NPLs, supplemented by the loan default culture. In view of this setting, this paper looks for the impact of audit committee independence, director ownership, external audit quality, CEO power, and bank size to control NPLs. After identifying two endogenous variables in a system of linear equations, this paper employs the system generalized method of moment (GMM) approach of regression analysis. This paper finds the significance of audit committee independence, director ownership, and external audit quality in controlling NPLs. However, this paper finds no significant impact of CEO power on lowering NPLs. Bank Size, measured in relative sense, has non-linear impact on NPLs. This paper recommends that the existing governance guidelines and BASEL-II accords fail to boost up the asset quality that controls NPLs and ensures capital adequacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extreme temperature is the key indicator of extreme climatic events. The goal of this research was to better understand the long-term trends and shifting behaviors associated with Bangladesh's record-breaking high temperatures in the country's atmosphere. Data from 26 Bangladeshi meteorological stations collected between 1981 and 2018 was analyzed with RClimDex. The annual count of warm (cold) spell duration increased, according to the findings (decrease). In the coastal regions, this rising temperature trend is more pronounced. There were longer (shorter) periods of warm (cold) weather in the twentieth century than there were in the previous decade. As a result, the length of warm (cold) spells has become longer since the beginning of the twenty-first century, as compared to the last quarter of the twentieth century. There is little fluctuation in diurnal temperatures, but they are getting smaller and smaller. There is a 13% decrease in the Cold Spell Duration Indicator (CSDI), which indicates that we are in for a long, cold winter. At a rate of 14% per year, the Warm Spell Duration Indicator (WSDI) annual count suggests an extremely hot summer is imminent. Diurnal temperature range (DTR) values decreased by 1.1% year-round, raising the specter of climate extremes like the CSDI and WSD. An increasing (decreasing) trend in indicators of how long hot (cold) weather lasts indicates an increase (decrease) in Bangladesh's warm atmosphere. This study investigates the prevalence and determinants of readiness for quality antenatal care (ANC) services in Bangladesh using data from the 2017 Bangladesh Health Facility Survey (BHFS). We assessed the association between selected factors and the readiness index using multinomial logistic regression. We identified a significant gap in the availability and quality of ANC services, only 4.26% of health facilities provide quality ANC services, with rural facilities showing lower readiness compared to urban facilities (RRR:0.13; 95% CI: 0.06–0.31; p < 0.001). Community clinics and private hospitals have a lower likelihood of medium or high readiness compared to public hospitals or clinics. Health facilities with specialized care are more likely to demonstrate readiness for quality ANC services. Policy recommendations include increased healthcare funding, implementation of ANC guidelines, strengthened monitoring and evaluation of health facilities, and heightened community awareness. Background: Although Bangladesh has an impressive track record in the reduction of maternal and child mortality, tetanus, a dreadful disease, impedes the way to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) in this respect. Sufficient doses of tetanus toxoid containing vaccine during pregnancy ensure immunity against tetanus to mothers as well as newborns. Since inequalities persist across vaccination programs globally, in this paper, an attempt has been made to examine whether tetanus toxoid immunization (TTI) status among the women of reproductive age in Bangladesh for their most recent live birth born preceding 2 years of the survey changes with their living standard index (LSI).Methods: Five domains of deprivation such as energy use, improved sanitation, drinking water, housing and assets ownership were used to compute the LSI using a approach proposed by Alkire and Foster. The adjusted association between LSI and TTI was established by using logistic regression model. For the purpose of statistical analysis, a nationally representative cross-sectional data extracted from Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (BMICS), 2019 have been used.Result: The bivariate analysis revealed that 79.5% (95% CI 78.0-81.0) of women with low and 83.1% (95% CI 81.3-84.9) with moderate living standards had sufficient vaccination coverage for their most recent pregnancies while this percentage was higher for the women who belonged to high living standard (85.2, 95% CI = 84.2-86.2). A strong evidence for greater odds of sufficient immunization with TT among the women maintaining a high standard of living (AOR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.08-1.42, p < 0.01) was found from regression analysis.Conclusion: The results depict existing living standard disparity with respect to TT vaccination coverage among women in Bangladesh. Present research suggests that immunization campaigns need to be conducted especially for the disadvantaged people to improve their health care and immunization service utilization among women within the age bracket of 15 to 49. This study proposed a scientific way to enhance TT vaccination among Bangladeshi women, which could help Bangladesh attain a widespread tetanus protection and thus, meet the SDGs for maternal and child mortality reduction. Background: Women's empowerment, education, and economic status are jointly introduced as women's 3E. A number of studies found the significant association of these three variables with maternal health outcomes, but no studies, to the best of knowledge, have been found to justify the joint influence of women's 3E on the birth interval. As several studies have revealed that the short birth interval increases the risk of adverse maternal, perinatal, and infant outcomes and it is also responsible for increasing the country's population size, more research is needed on the birth interval. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the influence of women's 3E on the short birth interval after controlling the other selected covariates. Methods: Data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS), 2017–18 have been used to serve the purpose of the study. To measure the birth interval, at least two live births for non-pregnant mothers and at least one live birth for currently pregnant mothers born in the 5 years before the survey were included in the study. The Chi-Square test was applied to know the unadjusted association of the selected covariates including women's 3E with the short birth interval. In order to find out the adjusted association of women's 3E with the short birth interval, sequential binary logistic regression models have been used. Results: The study found that about 23% of births in Bangladesh were born in a short birth interval. The likelihood of subsequent births of women decreases with an increase in the score of women's 3E before or after controlling the characteristics of women, child, and households. The results of the final model show that mothers with the coverage of 50% - 75%, 75% - 100%, and full coverage (100%) in 3E have a 23%, 41%, and 42% lower odds of having short birth interval compared to mothers with coverage of below 50% in 3E, respectively. Conclusion and recommendation: Bangladesh still lags behind in meeting the minimum requirements for inter-birth intervals set by the World Health Organization. The study has shown that the 3E in women can contribute in prolonging the duration of subsequent births in Bangladesh. Policy-making interventions are needed to raise awareness among uneducated, under-empowered and economically poor reproductive women through family planning and fertility control programs so that the country can achieve the desired fertility rate. Background: Bangladesh has experienced remarkable transformation in demographic, health, and nutritional status of the population. The changes have exposed the population to a number of challenges, the detrimental effect of which on health and nutrition is likely to be increased by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We provide an overview of health and nutritional challenges in Bangladesh in relation to demographic transition and the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: We identified and reviewed recent reports, published articles, and pertinent gray literature on nutrition and food security in Bangladesh to provide historical and contextual information.Results: The review identifies the progress as well as existing burden regarding nutrition and food security in Bangladesh and highlights the challenges in the coming days in regard to population growth and the COVID-19 pandemic. The country is on track to reduce all forms of childhood undernutrition, while the proportion of nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases is rising owing to changes in dietary intake, low physical activity, and sedentary lifestyle.Conclusions: Despite remarkable progress, health and nutritional status of the population in Bangladesh faces challenges, particularly in relation to demographic transition and compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, which require concerted attention from policymakers as well as stakeholders. Multi-drug-resistance (MDR) is a severe public health concern worldwide, and its containment is more challenging in developing countries due to poor antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance and irrational use of antibiotics. The current study investigated 100 clinical E. coli isolates and revealed that 98% of them were MDR. PCR analysis using 25 selected isolates showed the predominance of metallo-β-lactamase gene blaNDM (80%) and ESBL genes blaOXA (48%) and blaCTX-M-15 (32%). The AmpC gene was detected in 68% of the isolates, while 32% was tetC positive. Notably, 34% of the isolates were resistant to carbapenem. Whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis of an extensively drug-resistant (XDR) isolate (L16) revealed the presence of the notorious sequence type 131 responsible for multi-drug-resistant infections, multiple antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence genes, and mobile genetic elements that pose risks to environmental transmission. Our results indicate that MDR is alarmingly increasing in Bangladesh that critically limits the treatment option against infections and contributes to further aggravation to the prevailing situation of MDR worldwide. Background: Breast cancer (BCa) is a leading cause of mortality among women in Bangladesh. Many young women in Bangladesh have poor knowledge about breast cancer screening, including risk factors, warning signs/symptoms, diagnosis and early detection. We investigated awareness about breast cancer risk factors as a screening tool among women at the Sheikh Hasina Medical College (SHMC) of Tangail district in Bangladesh. Methods: A cross sectional survey was conducted to collect data via a structured questionnaire from SHMC during the period of February to December 2019. A total of 1,007 participants (aged 33.47 (±12.37 years)) was considered for data analysis. Results: Of the 1,007 women, about 50% were knowledgeable about the risk factors. Pain in the breast was identified as the most commonly warning sign/symptom of breast cancer. Only 32.2% of respondents knew at least one breast cancer screening method. The mean knowledge was scored 3.43 ± 2.25 out of a total possible score of 8. Awareness of BCa was associated with residence, family history of breast cancer, marital, literacy and socio-economic status (p <0.05). Only 14.7% of women who knew about BSE said they were conducting regular breast self-examination. Unmarried women (aOR: 2.971; 95% CI: 1.108–7.968) were more likely to have performed BSE compared to married women (p <0.05). Conclusion: Although most participants were aware of breast cancer; knowledge about risk factors, warning signs/symptoms, early diagnosis and detection was relatively poor. Knowledge about performing BSE was particularly low. This highlights the importance of increasing awareness about breast cancer risk factors and early detection among young women in Bangladesh. Ensuring nutrition at the household level has been one of the greatest challenges for rural communities in Bangladesh. In this study, a coastal sub-district in Barguna, Bangladesh was selected for data collection, where we undertook 20 focus group discussions, 10 key informant interviews, and dietary diversity scoring with 50 respondents to understand women's involvement in decision-making and income-generating activity. Based on descriptive and thematic analyses, we found that women's participation in various income-generating activities made them self-dependent in decision-making within their households, which in turn improved their roles in household food security and nutritional management. The pattern of family food distribution revealed that most women ate meals leftover by males, whereas 48 percent consumed food from less than four food groups. These findings should be useful for public health workers, activists, and national/international stakeholders involved in improving the dietary quality and nutritional status of rural people. Improved sanitation has been hypothesized to reduce soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections by reducing the prevalence and concentration of STH eggs/larvae in soil. We evaluated the effect of a randomized sanitation program (providing households with an improved dual-pit latrine, tools for child/animal feces management, and behavioral messaging) on reducing the prevalence and concentration of STH eggs in soil from household courtyards. We collected soil samples from 1405 households enrolled in the sanitation intervention (n = 419) and control (n = 914) groups of a cluster-randomized controlled trial (WASH Benefits) in rural Bangladesh approximately 2 years after the initiation of the interventions. We analyzed samples for Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworm eggs by microscopy. We estimated prevalence ratios (PR) and egg count ratio (ECR) to compare the prevalence of STH eggs and arithmetic and geometric mean egg counts for STH eggs per gram of soil in the sanitation and control arms. Among intervention households, latrines achieved high and sustained user uptake by adults while child open defecation remained common and most households did not dispose of child feces hygienically. In courtyard soil from control households, the prevalence of any STH eggs was 75.7% and the prevalence of any larvated STH eggs was 67.3%. A. lumbricoides was detected in 63.0% of control samples and T. trichiura in 55.7% of control samples; hookworm was not detected in any sample. In the control arm, the arithmetic mean egg count for any STH was 3.96 eggs/dry gram, while the geometric mean was 1.58 eggs/dry gram. There was no difference between the intervention and control groups in the prevalence of any STH eggs (PR = 0.98 (95% CI: 0.91, 1.05)) or mean egg counts (ECR = 0.08 (95% CI: -0.10, 0.26) for geometric mean and 0.07 (95% CI: -0.22, 0.37) for arithmetic mean). Adjusted models gave similar results. A compound-level sanitation intervention that provided improved latrines and tools for disposal of child and animal feces did not have an impact on STH eggs in soil. In order to effectively reduce the prevalence and concentration of STH eggs in the environment, sustained, widespread use of sanitation strategies to isolate and hygienically dispose of child and animal feces may need to complement traditional strategies for containment of adult human feces. Sports activities play a crucial role in preserving our health and mind. Due to the rapid growth of sports video repositories, automatized classification has become essential for easy access and retrieval, content-based recommendations, contextual advertising, etc. Traditional Bangladeshi sport is a genre of sports that bears the cultural significance of Bangladesh. Classification of this genre can act as a catalyst in reviving their lost dignity. In this paper, the Deep Learning method is utilized to classify traditional Bangladeshi sports videos by extracting both the spatial and temporal features from the videos. In this regard, a new Traditional Bangladeshi Sports Video (TBSV) dataset is constructed containing five classes: Boli Khela, Kabaddi, Lathi Khela, Kho Kho, and Nouka Baich. A key contribution of this paper is to develop a scratch model by incorporating the two most prominent deep learning algorithms: convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short term memory (LSTM). Moreover, the transfer learning approach with the fine-tuned VGG19 and LSTM is used for TBSV classification. Furthermore, the proposed model is assessed over four challenging datasets: KTH, UCF-11, UCF-101, and UCF Sports. Child open defecation is common in low-income countries and can lead to fecal exposure in the domestic environment. We assessed associations between child feces management practices vs. measures of contamination and child diarrhea among households with children <5 years in rural Bangladesh. We visited 360 households quarterly and recorded caregiver-reported diarrhea prevalence, and defecation and feces disposal practices for children <5 years. We examined caregiver and child hands for visible dirt and enumerated E. coli in child and caregiver hand rinse and stored drinking water samples. Safe child defecation (in latrine/potty) and safe feces disposal (in latrine) was reported by 21% and 23% of households, respectively. Controlling for potential confounders, households reporting unsafe child defecation had higher E. coli prevalence on child hands (prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.12, 1.04–1.20) and in stored water (PR = 1.12,1.03–1.21). Similarly, households reporting unsafe feces disposal had higher E. coli prevalence on child hands (PR = 1.11, 1.02–1.21) and in stored water (PR = 1.10, 1.03–1.18). Effects on E. coli levels were similar. Children in households with unsafe defecation and feces disposal had higher diarrhea prevalence but the associations were not statistically significant. Background: Early initiation of breastfeeding within 1 hour after birth is essential for newborns, because it reduces risk of neonatal mortality and hypothermia to a great extent and also helps in preventing the long-term chronic diseases and in increasing energy and immunity to newborn. In order to reach the 'very good state' of timely or early initiation of breastfeeding recommended by WHO, Bangladesh needs to increase the current rate of 51.24 to 100%. An attempt has been made in this study to examine how the early breastfeeding practice changes among male and female children with time controlling the factors associated with this practice. Methods: Data from last four consecutive Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys (BDHS) have been used in the study. The participants were included whose child born within the last 5 years preceding the surveys of 2004, 2007 and 2011, and within the last 3 years preceding the survey of 2014 in the study and the respective selected participants were 5145, 4765, 7099 and 4370. To conduct the trend analysis, the descriptive statistics of selected variables along with prevalence of early initiation of breastfeeding have been computed by different years and a multiple logistic regression model has been fitted to the pooled dataset of 2004–2014 considering survey years as time. Results: Rate of early initiation of breastfeeding increased as time progressed and it was faster for female child compared to male child. For example, female children were significantly 10 and 6% less likely to be initiated early than their counterparts in 2004 and 2007, respectively; whereas after 2007 both male and female children were equally treated for breastfeeding practice. It was also found that rate of early initiation significantly increased for one unit increased in survey year and this increasing rate was higher for female child compared to male child. For example, for one unit of increased in survey year, the early initiation of breastfeeding increased by 60% for male child and by 67% for female child. Besides, survey time, gender, education of parents, wanted index child, mode of delivery, antenatal care visits, wealth index, exposure to media and division were found to have potential influence on early initiation of breastfeeding. Conclusion: Demographic and health surveys conducted in Bangladesh since 2011 have shown no evidence of gender discrimination regarding timely initiation of breastfeeding. In order to achieve the target rate of early initiation of breastfeeding recommended by WHO, it requires to take effective intervention regarding maternal and child health education. Many of the buildings which experienced damage in recent earthquakes such as the 2015 Nepal Earthquake were reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings with unreinforced masonry infill walls. This study proposes a simplified procedure to estimate the in-plane seismic capacity of masonry infilled RC frame buildings based on concepts of the Japanese seismic evaluation standard (JBDPA, [1]). The correlation of seismic capacity and observed damage obtained using a database of 370 existing RC frame buildings with masonry infill that experienced earthquakes in Taiwan, Ecuador and Nepal is investigated. The Is index, which represents the seismic capacity of buildings in the Japanese standard, showed good correlation with the observed damage and proved to be effective as a simple method to estimate seismic capacity. The method was then applied to 103 existing buildings in Bangladesh that have not experienced a major earthquake recently. Despite Nipah virus outbreaks having high mortality rates (>70% in Southeast Asia), there are no licensed drugs against it. In this study, we have considered all 9 Nipah proteins as potential therapeutic targets and computationally identified 4 putative peptide inhibitors (against G, F and M proteins) and 146 small molecule inhibitors (against F, G, M, N, and P proteins). The computations include extensive homology/ab initio modeling, peptide design and small molecule docking. An important contribution of this study is the increased structural characterization of Nipah proteins by approximately 90% of what is deposited in the PDB. In addition, we have carried out molecular dynamics simulations on all the designed protein-peptide complexes and on 13 of the top shortlisted small molecule ligands to check for stability and to estimate binding strengths. Our strategy was to tackle the development of therapeutics on a proteome wide scale and the lead compounds identified could be attractive starting points for drug development. To counter the threat of drug resistance, we have analysed the sequences of the viral strains from different outbreaks, to check whether they would be sensitive to the binding of the proposed inhibitors. Author summary: Nipah virus infections have killed 72–86% of the infected individuals in Bangladesh and India. The infections are spread via bodily secretions of bats, pigs and other infected individuals. Even though, the disease was first detected in the human population in 1998, there are no approved drugs/vaccines against it. In this study, we have tried to model the 3D structures of the Nipah virus proteins. We have then used these models to design/predict inhibitory molecules that would bind them and prevent their function. We have also analysed the different strains of the virus to identify conservation patterns of amino acids in the proteins, which in turn informs us about the potential target sites for the drugs. Introduction: Spices like Allium cepa (onion), Allium sativum (garlic), Zingiber officinale (ginger) etc are indispensable part for the preparation of our daily food and are reported to possess compounds, which have varied with beneficial biological effects. Aims: The present study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the antioxidant potentials of ethanolic extracts of A. cepa bulb, A. sativum bulb and Z. officinale rhizome. Methods: All the extracts of these three spices were subjected to total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and DPPH radical scavenging assay for determination of antioxidant activity. Data are tested and tabulated by using SPSS software of 10 version. Results: The present study revealed that Z. officinale extract exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 value of 32.439 (μg/ml)), followed by A. cepa (IC50 value of 48.077 (μg/ml)), and A. sativum (IC50 value of 78.289 (μg/ml)) respectively. The study also supplicated that Z. officinale has higher phenolic but lower flavonoid content at different concentrations than A. cepa and A. sativum. Conclusion: According to our present study it can be summarized that these spices have antioxidant activity and can be used as natural drug sources for the development of potential preventive intervention in case of free radical-mediated diseases. Background: Hands are a route of transmission for fecal-oral pathogens. This analysis aimed to assess associations between hand E. coli contamination and child age and determine if observed hand cleanliness can serve as a proxy for E. coli contamination on young children’s hands. Methods: Trained field workers collected hand rinse samples from children aged 1–14 months in 584 households in rural Bangladesh and assessed the visual cleanliness of child hands (fingernails, finger pads and palms). Samples were analyzed using the IDEXX most probable number (MPN) methodto enumerate E. coli. We assessed if child age (immobile children aged 1–4 months vs. mobile children aged 5–14 months) is associated with log10 E. coli counts on hands using generalized estimating equations (GEE). We estimated the log10 difference in hand E. coli counts associated with the cleanliness of different hand parts using a multivariable GEE model.We calculated the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) for dirty fingernails, fingerpads, palms and overall hands (the three observed parts combined) against binary E. coli presence on hands. Results: E. coli was detected on 43% of child hands. Children in the mobile age range had 0.17 log10 MPN higher E. coli on hands than those in the immobile age range (Δlog10 = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.02, 0.32, p = 0.03). Children with visible dirt particles on finger pads had 0.46 log10 MPN higher E. coli on hands than those with clean finger pads (Δlog10 = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.05, 0.87, p = 0.03). Dirty fingernails indicated binary E. coli presence with 81% sensitivity and 26% specificity while dirty fingerpads and palms indicated E. coli presence with 29% sensitivity and 75–77% specificity. The PPV was 45–48% and NPV 59–65% for all three types of observations. Conclusion: Hand contamination with E. coli was prevalent among young children in rural Bangladesh, with higher levels of contamination among mobile children. Studies should assess if strategies to remove animal feces from the courtyard, provide designated hygienic play spaces for children and deliver targeted messaging to mothers to wipe or wash children’s hands after contact with animals and animal feces reduce child hand contamination. Visible hand cleanliness was a poor predictor of E. coli presence on young children’s hands so other low-cost field measurements are needed to accurately detect fecal contamination on hands. Objectives: The present study was carried out to assess the antibiotic resistance and to identify the resistance genes in Escherichia coli from captive Bengal tigers at two Safari parks in Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: A number of 24 environmental fecal swab samples of Bengal tigers were collected from two different Safari parks in Bangladesh. For the isolation of E. coli, samples were submitted to a number of bacteriological screening and biochemical tests. The antibiotic susceptibility of E. coli isolates was determined by disk diffusion method. Results: Results demonstrated that 18 environmental fecal samples were positive to E. coli in bacteriological screening and biochemical test. The overall prevalence of E. coli in Bengal tiger was 75% (n = 18/24). The antibiogram study unveiled that all the isolates were resistant to ampicillin. Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, nalidixic acid, and tetracycline were 89% (n = 16/18) resistant. On the contrary, 100% (n = 18/18) of the isolates were sensitive to colistin sulfate. blaTEM was detected in 78% (n = 14/18) ampicillin-resistant isolates, whereas sul2 was found in 31% (n = 5/16) of the sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim-resistant isolates. Conclusion: This study, first time in Bangladesh, highlights a significant proportion of environmental fecal samples from captive Bengal tigers at Safari parks harboring antibiotic resistant E. coli. Suitable drying technique and energy efficient dryer are important concerns for drying of high moisture paddy. In this study, a small scale mixed flow dryer (MFD), with presenting systematic design approach, was developed and tested for paddy drying. Performance evaluation of the developed dryer in terms of specific energy consumption, instantaneous drying and energy efficiencies, and quality of the milled rice were investigated. A comparative performance analysis between the developed MFD and industrial Louisiana State University (LSU) dryer, which is widely used for paddy drying in Bangladesh, was also studied. In addition, drying kinetics for high moisture paddy was evaluated thorough analyzing outlet air relative humidity. Energy analysis revealed that specific electrical (in terms of primary energy) and thermal energy consumption were 0.97 and 3.17 MJ kg−1 water removed, respectively in reducing paddy moisture content (mc) from initial 25 to 12%, the final mc wet basis. Calculation indicated that 33.1% specific electrical and 21% specific thermal energy consumption can be saved by MFD in contrast to the industrial LSU dryer. The energy and drying efficiency values were found to be varied from 0.85 to 0.90 and from 0.10 to 0.17, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed that paddy samples dried by the MFD yielded 16.01% higher head rice yield than sun drying method. Background: Socioeconomic inequalities in neonatal mortality are substantial in many developing countries. Little is known about how to address this problem. Trials in Asia and Africa have shown strong impacts on neonatal mortality of a participatory learning and action intervention with women's groups. Whether this intervention also reduces mortality inequalities remains unknown. We describe the equity impact of this women's groups intervention on the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) across socioeconomic strata.Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis of all four participatory women's group interventions that were shown to be highly effective in cluster randomized trials in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Malawi. We estimated intervention effects on NMR and health behaviours for lower and higher socioeconomic strata using random effects logistic regression analysis. Differences in effect between strata were tested.Results: Analysis of 69120 live births and 2505 neonatal deaths shows that the intervention strongly reduced the NMR in lower (50-63% reduction depending on the measure of socioeconomic position used) and higher (35-44%) socioeconomic strata. The intervention did not show evidence of 'elite-capture': among the most marginalized populations, the NMR in intervention areas was 63% lower [95% confidence interval (CI) 48-74%] than in control areas, compared with 35% (95% CI: 15-50%) lower among the less marginalized in the last trial year (P-value for difference between most/less marginalized: 0.009). The intervention strongly improved home care practices, with no systematic socioeconomic differences in effect.Conclusions: Participatory women's groups with high population coverage benefit the survival chances of newborns from all socioeconomic strata, and perhaps especially those born into the most deprived households. Despite extensive global efforts, energy poverty remains a persistent issue, primarily affecting developing countries. While there have been numerous policy initiatives proposed in the academic literature to alleviate energy poverty, the potential of energy poverty alleviation through financial inclusion has received limited attention. To address this issue, this study is conducted using survey data from the Bangladesh Household Income and Expenditure Survey held during 2010 and 2016. A multilevel regression model is employed to identify the association between energy poverty and financial inclusion. The results reveal that households with financial inclusion experience significantly lower rates of acute and severe energy poverty by 13% and 33%, respectively, compared to those without financial inclusion. Moreover, to establish a causal relationship between financial inclusion and energy poverty, a propensity score matching and the Lewbel two-stage least square regression methods are employed in this paper. The findings indicate that female-headed households have a lower likelihood of severe energy poverty compared to male-headed households. Moreover, when comparing education levels within households, both males and females contribute equally to reducing energy poverty through financial inclusion. Following Identity Theory proposed by Akerlof and Kranton (2000), we conceptualize the interactions between conservative outlook and female wellbeing through influencing gender norms. Conservative households often prefer women to stay home, which correlates to female employment and decision-making autonomy, affecting female physical mobility and female nutrition. Finding a suitable indicator for conservative outlook is difficult as we typically lack household-level ‘value survey’. In the fast modernizing context of rural Bangladesh, wearing burqa (veil) is often perceived as an indicator of socially conservative outlook. Using this insight, we process the data from the second wave of the Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS) for 2015 to test the statistically robust association between household-level conservative outlook and gender-sensitive wellbeing indicators such as female employment, body mass index, and decision-making autonomy for the population of ever-married females aged 15–49 years old. After controlling for individual, household, and regional characteristics, and using sub-regional fixed effects, our findings suggest that living in conservative households is associated with lower probability of female employment. Females from conservative households are less likely to be in wage work or salaried jobs. Background: The relative frequency of non-traumatic compressive and non-compressive myelopathies and their etiologies have not been evaluated extensively in Bangladesh. This study was aimed to identify the etiological diagnosis of non-traumatic myelopathies. Methods: One hundred cases of non-traumatic myelopathic admitted patients were prospectively studied during 2009-2012 in the neurology ward of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Patients underwent a detailed clinical evaluation followed by laboratory investigations and neuroimaging studies. Results: Among 100 cases, 46 patients (male 41 and female 5) presented with quadriparesis and 54 patients (male 30 and female 24) presented with paraparesis. Duration of symptoms before presentation to the hospital was considerably higher in quadriparesis compared to paraparesis (230.09 ± 31.16 days VS 136.82 ± 21.77 days; p value = 0.016). There were no significant differences in the number of patients admitted between compressive and non-compressive groups (p value - 0.4035). Common etiologies observed in this study were vertebral disc disease (23%), spinal cord tumor (15%), Pott's disease (15%), acute transverse myelitis (13%) and motor neuron disease (11%). Conclusion: Vertebral disc disease, spinal cord tumors, infection (Pott's disease), post infectious condition (ATM), and neurodegenerative disease (MND) are mostly responsible for myelopathies. Purpose: Recent evidence suggests that, globally, women with disability suffer multiple forms of discrimination and exclusion from mainstream society when compared with their female peers and men without disability. In Bangladesh, which is a grossly overpopulated low-income country in South Asia, women with disability have poor health outcomes within a gender-biased cultural context. This study aimed to define the current barriers and facilitators to socioeconomic inclusion for women with physical disability living in the community in Bangladesh and to highlight the impact of these barriers on health. Methods: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 women who had either a spinal cord injury or amputation, and who had been discharged for at least 3 months after inpatient admission. Mixed purposeful sampling (a mixture of typical case sampling and criterion sampling) was used to recruit the study participants. A thematic analysis was conducted to extract themes from the data. The social determinants of health framework and the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) model were then used to contextualise the data. Results: Five major themes were identified including: exclusion from formal education, exclusion from the work force, exclusion from public facilities, exclusion from marriage and increased risk of violence and exclusion from community activities and social groups. Facilitators to inclusion include: provision of accessible buildings and transport, community-based advocacy services and vocational training services. Conclusions: The combination of physical disability and female gender presents multiple complex barriers to inclusion in the socioeconomic and cultural life of Bangladesh. Practical interventions through both up-scaling and expansion of disability-specific programming and sustained policy implementation are required to facilitate individual empowerment and better health outcomes for women with disability. Even after 43 years of independence, Bangladesh—one of the poor and densely populated countries of the world—is suffering from inadequate healthcare systems and facilities for the nation. Although there have been few noteworthy achievements from public and public sector initiatives, a significant proportion of the rural population is still deprived of required medical care. Under such prevailing paradoxical development, the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Bangladesh have played a vital role in alleviating the poor healthcare condition in Bangladesh. While private sector healthcare comes at high cost, it is only accessible to high income groups. Whereas public sector healthcare though comparatively much less expensive, the quality of service provided is highly questionable. In such a situation, NGOs have aided the country's need for basic healthcare. The NGOs have reached the grassroots in order to spread awareness and information and to provide quality healthcare to the underprivileged. The paper focuses on one such NGO, Impact Foundation1 ‘Jibon Tari’ floating hospital, which aims to serve the poverty stricken people of Bangladesh. This case study focuses on the current changes, challenges, and attributions of a dynamic NGO with a unique concept, known as Jibon Tari that assists in aiding the healthcare deficit in Bangladesh.
