- Abstract
This book presents articles that document the serious funding problems faced by higher education institutions and systems in the Asian and Pacific region, and explores possible strategies to address these problems. It presents an overview of the financial situation faced by higher education in the region, and then discusses two main strategies that appear to be available. These are the achievement of increased cost-efficiency through cost analysis and other means, and the diversification of funding sources to reduce dependence on government support, especially on direct government grants. Detailed case studies are presented involving 12 different countries, and the recent initiatives and possibilities. Articles and their authors are as follows: "Higher Education and Financial Resource Problems in the Asian and Pacific Region" (Grant Harmon); "Cost Analysis in Higher Education" (Mozaffer Ahmad); "Achievement of Increased Cost Efficiency" (Grant Harmon); "Possibilities of Additional Funding" (Grant Harman); "Bangladesh" (Tajul Islam Khan); "China" (Wang Xianming and Han Jin); "India: A National Perspective" (M.
