The article examines the influence of English movies, series and cartoons on students majoring in English at a university in Bangladesh. The objective of this study was to ascertain the potential impact of films, series, and cartoons on the acquisition of the English language and to determine the extent of their influence. This quantitative research centered on the English department located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A set of questionnaires was employed to administer a series of inquiries to 140 students. The research uses both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data sources include surveys and interviews, while secondary data sources encompass journals, publications, previous research, and websites. This study has shown the significant impact exerted by English films, series, and cartoons on the EFL learners. The development of English language proficiency--reading, speaking, listening, writing--was noticeably improved. It is found that watching English series, cartoons and movies is a quick and effective way for EFL students to pick up the language. The approach functions as an audiolingual method, incorporating visual aids and facilitating situational language instruction. Moreover, the subtitles have been found to enhance both reading and writing abilities, as well as promote social interactions and foster a deeper understanding of the culture of native speakers. This research will also provide valuable insights for future scholars and researchers.

Background: Assessing maternal health care utilisation is imperative for the health of both mother and her child. Maternal education is an important determinant in subsequent maternal health care usage, according to research. There is a dearth of research on the causal relationship between maternal education and maternal health services as well as examining the performance of different propensity score methods for estimating absolute effects. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the effect of maternal education on usage of maternal health services minimising the confounding effect and to compare different propensity score approaches to estimate absolute effects of maternal education on usage of maternal health services. Methods: We used data from a cross-sectional study conducted by icddr,b in Bangladesh. A total of 1300 recently delivered mothers were included in this study. We used different propensity score (PS) methods to estimate the causal effect of maternal education on receiving maternal health services, including PS matching, PS weighting, covariate adjustment using PS, as well as used modified log-Poisson regression with and without multiple covariates. Results: The study revealed highly imbalanced possible confounding factors for mother's educational level, which might lead to erroneous estimates. All methods indicated a significant effect of higher maternal education, whether measured as a continuous scale or a binary variable (secondary or higher vs. below secondary) on maternal health services, significantly increased the likelihood of receiving four or more ANC, delivered at facility, PNC within 42 days and receiving all maternal health services compared to the mothers with lower level of education. The PS weighting provided precise estimates with a low range of confidence interval. Conclusions: The results provided important insights on how well these techniques worked to reduce effect of confounding variables and achieve precise estimates. Propensity score weighting method performed better in terms of providing more precise estimates with a narrower range of confidence intervals, indicating that this method may be a reliable approach for estimating the causal effect of maternal education on maternal health service utilisation. This study addresses the pervasive challenges of low hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) testing rates coupled with the stigma associated with these diseases in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs) with a special focus on Bangladesh. This study aims to introduce an innovative crowdsourcing intervention that involves medical students, a crucial cohort with the potential to shape healthcare attitudes. Through a structured crowdsourcing approach, the study designs and implements a digital intervention to counter stigma and promote testing among medical students in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Participants submitted brief videos or texts aiming to encourage hepatitis testing and reduce stigma. The call, advertised through meetings, emails, and social media, welcomed entries in English or Bengali over 3 weeks. A panel of six judges evaluated each entry based on clarity, impact potential, innovation, feasibility, and sustainability, awarding prizes to students behind the highest‐rated submissions. Seventeen videos and four text messages received an average score of 5.5 among 440 surveyed medical students, predominantly 22 years old (16%) and in their fourth year (21%). After viewing, 360 students underwent screening, identifying two previously undiagnosed HBV cases referred for care; no HCV infections were found. Notably, 41% expressed concerns about individuals with HBV working in hospitals or having a doctor living with HBV. In conclusion, this pilot showcases the power of medical students in spearheading campaigns to counter hepatitis stigma and encourage testing. By utilizing crowdsourcing, the study introduces an innovative approach to a persistent issue in LMICs specially in Bangladesh, offering a model that could potentially be adapted by other regions grappling with similar challenges. Education has been considered as a priority sector and a great challenge to the Bangladesh Government, with a view to transforming human potential into a productive workforce. The conventional face to face education system is not enough to cope with the need of an ever increasing population, rapid changes in human knowledge and the global context being changed. Education through open and distance learning (ODL) has been recognized as an important alternative in the country. Bangladesh Open University (BOU), established in 1992, has been mandated to improve the quality, relevance and efficiency of the education system with a view to eradicating illiteracy, developing human resources and alleviating poverty in the country. This article outlines the services provided by BOU, and explains how BOU utilizes its infrastructure and support services to deliver formal and non-formal programmes in basic and applied sciences, agriculture, technology, health, environment, education, language, teaching education, literature, population and gender issues to create awareness and promote knowledge. The impact of the programmes are reviewed and evaluated, based on feedback studies with target groups, and with particular reference to ODL in agriculture and rural development.

Background: The popular vegetable sweet gourd (Cucurbita moschata) is cultivated throughout Bangladesh. However, its yield is low owing to the severe infestation by fruit fly Bactrocera cucurbitae. This study investigated the toxicity of chemical insecticides and neem oil on fruit flies infesting sweet gourd. Methods: The repellency of adult fruit flies and larvae and the body weight and mortality of the larvae of the fruit fly were evaluated using three chemical insecticides-Karate 2.5 EC (cyhalothrin), Ripcord 10 EC (cypermethrin) and Shobicron 425 EC (profenofos Q+cypermethrin) and neem oil (azadirachtin). Result: The repellency rate of the fruit fly larvae varied from 20.0±0.0 to 86.7±6.7% and that of the adult fly from 13.3±6.7 to 73.3±6.7%; Shobicron 425 EC, at 2000 ppm, exhibited the best results in both the cases. The treatments negatively affected the weight of larvae compared to the control, where Shobicron 425 EC caused the lowest weight (7.8±0.2 mg). The insecticides at 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment demonstrated toxic effects on the larvae, where the LC50 values ranged from 742.5 (550.4-1060.5) to 2476.3 (2150.6-2954.7) ppm at 72 h after treatment. The field of fish microbiome research has rapidly been advancing, primarily focusing on farmed or laboratory fish species rather than natural or marine fish populations. This study sought to reveal the distinctive gut bacteriome composition and diversity within the anadromous fish species Tenualosa ilisha (hilsa), which holds the status of being the national fish of Bangladesh. We conducted an analysis on 15 gut samples obtained from 15 individual hilsa fishes collected from three primary habitats (e.g., freshwater = 5, brackish water = 5 and marine water = 5) in Bangladesh. The analysis utilized metagenomics based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing targeting the V3-V4 regions. Our comprehensive identification revealed a total of 258 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The observed OTUs were represented by six phyla, nine classes, 19 orders, 26 families and 40 genera of bacteria. Our analysis unveiled considerable taxonomic differences among the habitats (freshwater, brackish water, and marine water) of hilsa fishes, as denoted by a higher level of shared microbiota (p = 0.007, Kruskal-Wallis test). Among the identified genera in the gut of hilsa fishes, including Vagococcus, Morganella, Enterobacter, Plesiomonas, Shigella, Clostridium, Klebsiella, Serratia, Aeromonas, Macrococcus, Staphylococcus, Proteus, and Hafnia, several are recognized as fish probiotics. Importantly, some bacterial genera such as Sinobaca, Synechococcus, Gemmata, Serinicoccus, Saccharopolyspora, and Paulinella identified in the gut of hilsa identified in this study have not been reported in any aquatic or marine fish species. Significantly, we observed that 67.50% (27/40) of bacterial genera were found to be common among hilsa fishes across all three habitats. Our findings offer compelling evidence for the presence of both exclusive and communal bacteriomes within the gut of hilsa fishes, exhibiting potential probiotic properties. Separation or monotone likelihood can be observed in fitting process of both Poisson or generalized Poisson (GP) regression, particularly in case of small and/or sparse count data, using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) when one or more regression coefficients diverge to infinity. The study investigates the consequence of separation in the MLE based standard Poisson or GP model and addressed the problems by introducing a penalized likelihood approach. The penalized likelihood function is derived by adding a penalty term to the standard maximum likelihood function, which was originally proposed by Firth (1993) for reducing first order bias in MLE. The corresponding penalized likelihood score equation has shown to achieve convergence and provide finite estimate of the regression coefficient, which was not possible for the maximum likelihood method score equation. The simulation study, with different forms of separation, showed that penalized Poisson model or penalized GP outperform the standard Poisson and even the Zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) in the presence of complete or quasi-complete separation by achieving convergence and providing finite estimate of the regression coefficients. Even in the presence of near-to-quasi-complete separation, which is very common in practice, the penalized method showed better results than the standard Poisson, GP and ZIP in all simulation scenarios. Air quality degradation due to high levels of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) of various size fractions and the associated potentially toxic trace elements (PTEs) is a global concern. This article provides a thorough review and analysis of the temporal and spatial distribution of PM and PTEs in Bangladesh, offering a comprehensive assessment with other megacities worldwide based on existing literature. This study provides insights into the sources and transport mechanisms of PM and their link to human health. The level of PM was consistently high in Dhaka (capital of Bangladesh), with occasional higher levels in the surrounding cities. Different functional areas within Bangladesh show varying levels of PM, with total suspended particulates (TSP) being notably prevalent. When compared to megacities worldwide, African and Asian megacities, like India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Egypt, exhibited higher PM concentrations. The concentration of PM-associated PTEs varies significantly among megacities and PM10 tends to have relatively higher concentrations of PTEs compared to other fractions in Bangladesh. Pb in ambient air was found across most megacities, with a temporal increase in Bangladesh. TSP exhibited the highest relative Pb content, followed by PM10 and PM2.5. Temporal factors, geographic locations, meteorological conditions, and anthropogenic activities contribute to the variation in PM and associated PTEs concentration in Bangladesh and global megacities. Ultimately, this study would aid policymakers in assessing the magnitude of PM pollution in Bangladesh compared to other megacities considering regional factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The success of root canal therapy in endodontics is heavily dependent on identifying a second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in permanent maxillary molars. A comprehensive understanding of internal anatomy, particularly the recognition of MB2, is crucial for the effective treatment of this commonly encountered tooth. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and occurrence of the second mesiobuccal canal in permanent maxillary first and second molars. Methods: This cross-sectional study that was conducted at the Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Military Dental Centre Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2018 to December 2018. The analysis involved a total of 200 maxillary first molars and 200 maxillary second molars. In the initial phase for both groups, teeth were examined with the naked eye followed by microscopic assessment. Data analysis was conducted with MS Office tools. Results: In naked eye observation, the frequency of MB2 canals in the first molar teeth was found 64%, and in the second molar teeth it was found 56%. On the other hand, by microscopic assessment, the frequency of MB2 canals in the first molar teeth was found 96%, and in the second molar teeth, it was found 84%. Conclusion: The occurrence of the second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in permanent maxillary first molars is more common than in the second molars. Microscopic assessment proves to be more effective than naked eye assessment for detecting the presence of MB2 in both maxillary first and second molars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Addition to the angiosperm flora provides essential insights into the biodiversity of a region, contributing to ecological understanding and conservation planning. Gafargaon subdistrict under Mymensingh district in Bangladesh represents a diverse population of angiosperms with a multifaceted ecosystem that demands re-evaluation of the existing angiosperm diversity of Gafargaon to update the status of angiosperm taxa and facilitate their conservation efforts. With this endeavor, a total of 100 angiosperm taxa belonging to 90 genera and 46 families were uncovered as additional occurrence in Gafargaon. The species in the area showcased a variety of life forms, including 63 herbs, 14 shrubs, 14 trees, and 9 climbers. Among the recorded taxa, Chamaecostus cuspidatus (Nees & Mart.) C.D. Specht & D.W. Stev. was selected for antidiabetic drug design endeavor based on citation frequency and ethnomedicinal evidence. A total of 41 phytochemicals of C. cuspidatus were screened virtually, targeting the Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 protein through structure-based drug design approach, which unveiled two lead compounds, such as Tigogenin (-9.0 kcal/mol) and Diosgenin (-8.5 kcal/mol). The lead candidates demonstrated favorable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties with no major side effects. Molecular dynamics simulation revealed notable stability and structural compactness of the lead compounds. Principal component analysis and Gibbs free energy landscape further supported the results of molecular dynamics simulation. Molecular mechanics-based MM/GBSA approach unraveled higher free binding energies of Diosgenin (-47.36 kcal/mol) and Tigogenin (-46.70 kcal/mol) over Alogliptin (-46.32 kcal/mol). The outcome of the present investigation would enrich angiosperm flora of Gafargaon and shed light on the role of C. cuspidatus to develop novel antidiabetic therapeutics to combat diabetes. Environmental sustainability achievement is an increasingly significant issue in current society. Globally, unimpeded greenhouse gas emissions threaten environmental sustainability. As a developing economy, Bangladesh is extremely reliant on energy consumption, which results in greenhouse gas emissions and raises a significant threat to environmental sustainability. In our comprehensive analysis to study the energy consumption patterns of Bangladesh and their environmental implications, we employed a suite of advanced tests, including the auto-regressive distributed lag model. The Augmented-Dicky Fuller test and the Bound test, respectively, confirm the unit root and the co-integration status of the study variables. These methodologies illuminated the intricate relationship between fossil fuel consumption, industrial growth, and the consequent CO 2 emissions in the region. Despite the evident challenges posed by non-renewable energy sources, there's a discernible shift towards renewable energy and sustainable practices, especially in industrial sectors. This transition is further evidenced by the Long Short-Term Memory forecasting model, which projects a promising decline in CO 2 emissions over the next six years, plummeting from 70 metric tons to a mere 15 metric tons annually. While these findings highlight the strides Bangladesh is making towards sustainability, they also underscore the importance of continued emphasis on green technology and eco-friendly policies to ensure a sustainable future. This research presents a comprehensive study on developing and evaluating a deep learning-based forecasting model for hourly energy demand prediction in Bangladesh. Leveraging a novel dataset obtained from the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), the proposed model utilizes bi-directional long short-term memory networks (Bi-LSTMs), implemented through Tensor-Flow and Keras libraries. The study meticulously preprocesses the data, handling missing values and ensuring compatibility with the selected models. The models are trained and evaluated using Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Squared Error (MSE) metrics, revealing promising results of 376.72 of MAE. The experimental findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed forecasting model, showcasing its capability to predict energy demand accurately. Trema orientalis and Trewia nudiflora are the fastest rotation trees (3–4 years' rotation) in Bangladesh, and experimentally planted in social forestry in Gazipur district. Biorefinery is the most cited topic in research recent era in order to established circular bioeconomy. In established a biorefinery initiative, both species were fractionated into pulp, lignin and hemicellulose by formic acid (FA) treatment at atmospheric conditions. After alkaline peroxide bleaching of FA treated pulp, the yield was 47.0 % and 41.0 % with α-cellulose of 82.39 % and 81.61 %, and residual pentosan content of 9.26 % and 11.13 % for T. orientalis and T. nudiflora, respectively. The brightness of the pulps was 84.5 % and 85.0 %. Cold alkali extraction of the bleached pulp increased α-cellulose to 92.36 % and 91.29 % which was suitable for cellulose derivatives. Lignin was separated from the spent liquor by adding water. The FA lignin from hardwood replaced 20 % phenol in phenol-formaldehyde resin preparation without sacrifice of shear strength. The lignin separated FA liquor contains mainly pentose sugars, which was subsequently converted to furfural with a yield of 41.39 % and 41.72 % at 170 °C using 0.1 % H2SO4 catalyst from T. orientalis and T. nudiflora, respectively. Salinity variations are the main reason for rice yield fluctuations in salt-prone regions throughout the dry season (Boro season). Plant breeders must produce new rice varieties that are more productive, salt tolerant, and stable across a variety of settings to ensure Bangladesh's food sustainability. To assess the yield and stability, we used fifteen rice genotypes containing two tolerant checks BRRI dhan67, Binadhan-10 and the popular Boro rice variety BRRI dhan28 in different salinity "hotspot" in three successive years followed by additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) model utilizing a randomized complete block (RCB) design with two replications. Parents selection was done based on estimated breeding values (EBVs). Eight parents with high EBVs (IR83484-3-B-7-1-1-1, IR87870-6-1-1-1-1-B, BR8992-B-18-2-26, HHZ5-DT20-DT2-DT1, HHZ12-SAL2-Y3-Y2, BR8980-B-1-3-5, BRRI dhan67, and Binadhan-10) might be used to develop new segregating breeding materials. Based on farmer preferences and grain acceptability, three genotypes (IR83484-3-B-7-1-1-1, HHZ5-DT20-DT2-DT1, and HHZ12-SAL2-Y3-Y2) were the winning and best ones. The above three genotypes in the proposed variety trial showed significantly higher yields than the respective check varieties, high salinity tolerance ability, and good grain quality parameters. Among them, HHZ5-DT20-DT2-DT1 and IR83484-3-B-7-1-1-1 harbored eight and four QTL/genes that regulate the valuable traits revealed through 20 SNP genotyping. Finally, two genotypes IR83484-3-B-7-1-1-1 and HHZ5-DT20-DT2-DT1 were released as high salinity-tolerant rice varieties BRRI dhan97 and BRRI dhan99, respectively in Bangladesh for commercial cultivation for sustaining food security and sustainability. Bangladesh has tremendous opportunities to harness the potential of the agriculture sector like in vegetable sector which is contributing to our export sector too. Thus, the main focus of this study is to assess the financial profitability of selected eight major vegetables. The cost and return scenario of eight major vegetables that most of the farmers cultivate in the char land area such as brinjal, tomato, chili, bitter gourd, pumpkin, okra, bottle gourd, and amaranth were done for the study. Study areas were chosen in the districts of Mymensingh, Jamalpur, and Sherpur in Bangladesh following a simple random sampling procedure where 240 farmers were surveyed. The results show that the highest and lowest net return found for bottle gourd and okra, were Tk. 195,118 ha-1 and Tk. 32,894 ha-1, respectively. Further, in terms of gross return, bottle gourd production is the most profitable but in terms of net return both the brinjal and tomato are in the same position. The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) was the highest (1.98) for bottle gourd followed by tomato (1.96). Among the cost items, labor cost occupies more than half of the total cost which proves that vegetable production is labor-intensive cultivation. The ranking by variable and total cost revealed that farmers frequently choose the lowest-cost production method and the okra is the most preferred product in that method. This study was carried out with the objective of quantifying the concentrations of various physicochemical parameters of the groundwater (GW) and evaluating the interactions between the GW and the carrier rocks. Forty-two (42) GW samples were collected from different tube wells distributed in and around the Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) campus. The result showed that the cations and anions follow the order of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, and HCO3-, Cl-, and SO42-, respectively, for most cases. In general, the GW was found to be slightly alkaline and hard to very hard. More than 50% of samples exceeded the permissible limit of arsenic and manganese contents. The Water Quality Index (WQI) represented that 60% of waters are good to excellent in categories as per World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The Pearson correlation showed statistically significant correlations between each pair of parameters, with maximum positive and negative r values of 0.80 and -0.54, respectively. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) produced the six principle components among the 21 tested parameters (20 physicochemical and 1 is biological), which accounted for more than 81% of the total variance. Varius plots such as Piper, Durov, and Stiff Patterns suggested that the hydrogeochemical facies was dominated by the Ca-Mg-HCO3 water type. Finally, it was observed that the GW quality parameters in the Southwestern region of Bangladesh were governed mostly by the geochemical process of rock-water interaction, whereas the chemical weathering (dissolution) of calcite minerals was followed by the weathering of silicate minerals. Background: Following the mass influx of Rohingya refugees into Cox's Bazaar, Bangladesh in 2017, makeshift settlement camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf have been overburdened, leading to livelihood challenges for both Rohingya and host communities. The humanitarian crisis has had adverse effects on vulnerable populations, which include older people, persons with disabilities, adolescents, and single female household heads. Using a subset of a larger dataset on households with most vulnerable groups in both communities, we analysed the effect of the pandemic and lockdown on the livelihood of single female household (HH) heads. Methods: A cross-sectional household roster survey was designed to collect data from households with most vulnerable groups (MVGs) of host and Rohingya communities from December 2020 to March 2021; 11 host community villages and 10 Rohingya camps purposively selected as per the affiliated intervention of the project. The paper analysed quantitative and qualitative data from the sub-group of single female household heads without any income/low income. Participants were surveyed for their socio-demographic characteristics, COVID-19 experiences and knowledge, food security situation, social experiences and mental health using PHQ-2 test for depression. Results: We surveyed 432 single female HH heads. Support during the pandemic was reported to be low, with less than 50% of HHs reporting relief meeting their needs; only 36% and 15% of these HHs received rations in camps and host communities respectively. Loan facilities were mostly unavailable and there were reported insufficiencies in food consumption. Over 50% of respondents tested positive on the PHQ-2, a scale used to screen for depression. Further analyses indicates that having a chronic health issue (OR 2.2, 95% CI 1.33–3.66) was positively associated with the PHQ-2 score for Rohingya single females. For host single females, having an ill member in the HH (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.02–2.08) and the inability to save before the pandemic (OR 1.57 95% CI 1.11–2.23) increased the odds of screening positive for depression. Conclusion: Our study findings revealed insufficiencies with economic opportunities and food security for single female-headed households, as well as a high rate of positive screening for depression amongst this population. Aim: This study aimed to assess the effect of COVID-19 on hepatitis-related services in Bangladesh and compared the situation with same study conducted in Japan and globally. Methods: We conducted an online cross-sectional questionnaire survey among the clinicians of four societies associated with liver disease in Bangladesh from October to December 2022. The questionnaire included the same questions as a survey conducted in Japan and globally. Results: A total of 83 clinicians from 8 divisions in Bangladesh participated; 66.3% were heads of departments/institutions. Except for HCV treatment initiation, more than 30% of clinicians reported a 76–99% decline in all services. Compared to Japan and the global survey, there was a significantly higher decline in all HBV and HCV services in Bangladesh. To resume services back to pre-COVID-19 levels, Patient anxiety and fear (Bangladesh Survey: 80.7% vs Japan Survey: 67.4% vs Global Survey: 37.9%, p < 0.0001), loss of space due to COVID-19 (Bangladesh Survey: 63.9% vs Japan Survey: 34.7% vs Global Survey: 19.4%, p < 0.0001) were the main challenges. As part of the mitigation strategy, usage of telemedicine (Bangladesh Survey: 83.1% vs. Japan Survey: 67.3% vs Global Survey: 78.6% p < 0.0001), COVID-19 benefits, such as increased laboratory testing platforms (Bangladesh Survey: 77.1% vs Japan Survey: 17.9% vs Global Survey: 41.8%, p < 0.0001) was reported significantly higher in Bangladesh than in Japan and global survey. Conclusion: All the services-related to HBV and HCV were highly affected during greatest impact month of COVID-19 in Bangladesh and the decline level was higher than Japan and global survey. Repeated countermeasures of COVID-19 and constrained healthcare-system were the probable reasons in Bangladesh. Background: Since starting of the SARS-COV 2 pandemic till date, in dengue endemic countries co-infection of COVID -19 and Dengue co-infection remains a healthcare concern and cases have been reported from some Asian countries. Bangladesh being a high endemic region for dengue infection bears risk of significant healthcare burden of such co-infection cases. During the surge of dengue cases during monsoon season in 2021, the possibility of COVID19 - Dengue co-infection cases also increased. Method: This study was carried out in the Department of Internal Medicine and Pulmonology, Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) General Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh from June 2021 to December 2021. Dengue and COVID 19 cases were confirmed as per Bangladesh National guidelines. Result: Total 12 cases including 8 males were diagnosed as dengue -COVID 19 co-infection during the study period. Mean age was 47.0 years. Majority of cases (10) were residing in Dhaka. Among risk factors, 5 cases were known diabetic and 4 cases were hypertensive while 1 case was congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Common presentations were fever (100%), headache (75%), bodyache (66.7%), dry cough (41.7%), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and retro orbital pain were 25% while rash and shortness of breath occurred in 16.7%. Mean duration of fever was 5.8 days and mean recorded highest temperature was 102.5°F. Dengue manifestation was predominant in 8 cases (66.7%). Laboratory investigations revealed following mean values: baseline haematocrit (HCT) 39.9%, initial total white cell count 4.64x109/L, absolute neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio 2.4, lowest platelet count 100.4x109/L, C-Reactive Protein 143.8mg/L, serum ferritin 888.1 ng/ml, D dimer 2.0 µg/ml, LDH 668.1 U/L, serum Aspartate aminotransferase 88.1 U/L, Alanine aminotransferase 73 U/L. Radiological findings were present in 7(58.3%) cases, among which pneumonitis was predominant (4 cases, 57.1%). All cases were managed and followed up as per national guidelines till discharge and no one required critical care. Conclusion: Observation revealed that COVID -19 and Dengue co-infection may occur and if managed adequately fatal outcome can be avoided, even in high risk patients. Background and aims: The severity of illness and mortality in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) may be curtailed by vaccination. We assessed the disease severity and clinical outcome in coronavirus vaccinated patients following SARSCoV-2 infection. Methods: We conducted an observational study among the SARS-CoV-2 infected patients who received one or two doses of a single generic type of coronavirus vaccine (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, Covishield®, Serum Institute of India) at the outset of vaccine rollout program in Bangladesh. Eligible patients treated at home, outpatient basis, or hospitalized between April 10, 2021, and June 18, 2021, were included. Demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, comorbidities, radiological features, disease severity, treatment protocol, and outcomes were evaluated. The primary endpoint was disease severity (mild, moderate, severe, and critical). The secondary endpoint was clinical outcome (complete recovery or death) at day 28. Results: The cohort included total 61 patients. Age ranged between 23-82 year; majority were male (62.3%). Ninety five percent patients received a single dose of vaccine. Most of the patients had mild symptoms (63.9%), and treated at home (67.2%). Most of the patients recovered utterly (95.1%) without any death. Vaccination showed reduced disease severity (RR 0.93, 95% CI, 0.87-0.99). Conclusions: In this study it was observed that coronavirus vaccine may significantly lessen disease severity, improve clinical outcome, and prevent death among SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. Background: Understanding the adaptative changes in bone shapes among animals involves studying bone morphology. We examined adult hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)forelimb bones at the anatomy laboratory of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Bangladesh. Samples were collected from Rangpur Recreation Park and Zoo between September 2021 and July 2022. Methods: Bones were processed by removing mud and boiled with water. Subsequently, hydrogen peroxide was used for one and a half hours to remove any remaining muscular tissues from the bones. Following this, the bones were air-dried under sunlight for a month. Measurements of key parameters including length, height, width, circumference, and weight were obtained using calibrated instruments, thereby ensuring precision. Results:The scapula displayed a pronounced and elongated spine - the spina scapulae - that demarcated the lateral surface into two distinct fossae: the supraspinous fossa and the infraspinous fossa. The distal expansion of the spine, known as the acromion process, consisted of the fused hamate process and suprahamate process. The head of humerus was round and featured two undivided tubercles: the greater or major and the lesser tubercle. On the medial surface, a small and shallow radial fossa was observed, while on the opposite side, a large and deep olecranon fossa was present. The proximal surface of the radius head exhibited concave fovea capitis radii, which articulated with the lateral condyle of the humerus. The shaft of the radius was slightly expanded in the cranio-caudal direction. Similarly, the shaft of the ulnahad a somewhat triangular shape, resembling the shape of the radius shaft. Medially, it had a convex facet that articulated with the radius, and cranially, the interosseous space between the radius and ulna was longer than the caudal view. Conclusions: The unique anatomical features and morphometric measurements of the forelimb bones in hippos can be beneficial for identification, radiographic interpretation, and forensic investigation. The composition of groundwater governs the drinking and irrigation water suitability. A large part of the coastal region of Bangladesh is affected and is responsible for changing the composition of the groundwater. This research attempted to observe the groundwater quality of the Bhola Sadar and Char Fasson upazilas in coastal Bangladesh. Twenty-eight (28) water samples, 27 at depths of 260–430 m (850–1400 ft) and 1 from a crop field, were collected and analyzed. The quality of water samples was determined through the evaluation of odor, color, turbidity, electrical conductivity, pH, total dissolved solids, nitrate (NO3−), ammonium (NH4+), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and arsenic (As) ions. An Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer was used for heavy metal analysis. The outcomes were compared with the drinking water quality of Bangladesh and the World Health Organization. The results showed that the average values of nearly all of the parameters were underneath or within the standard level, representing that the groundwater was appropriate for drinking purposes. The water quality parameters were also compared with the irrigation water quality of Bangladesh and the Food and Agriculture Organization. It was found that the collected samples were also suitable for irrigation. To do this, the soluble sodium percentage, sodium adsorption ratio, magnesium adsorption ratio, Kelley's ratio, and total hardness were calculated. Background: Arsenic (As) and its species are major pollutants in ecological bodied including groundwater in Bangladesh rendering serious public health concern. Bacteria with arsenotrophic genes have been found in the aquifer, converting toxic arsenite [As (III)] to less toxic arsenate [As (V)] that is easily removed using chemical and biological trappers. In this study, genomic and metagenomic approaches parallel to culture-based assay (Graphical abstract) have made it possible to decipher phylogenetic diversity of groundwater arsenotrophic microbiomes along with elucidation of their genetic determinants. Results: Seventy-two isolates were retrieved from six As-contaminated (average As concentration of 0.23 mg/L) groundwater samples from Munshiganj and Chandpur districts of Bangladesh. Twenty-three isolates harbored arsenite efflux pump (arsB) gene with high abundance, and ten isolates possessing arsenite oxidase (aioA) gene, with a wide range of minimum inhibitory concentration, MICAs (2 to 32 mM), confirming their role in arsenite metabolism. There was considerable heterogeneity in species richness and microbial community structure. Microbial taxa from Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Acidobacteria dominated these diversities. Through these combinatorial approaches, we have identified potential candidates such as, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Achromobacter, Paraburkholderia, Comamonas and Klebsiella and associated functional genes (arsB, acr3, arsD, arsH, arsR) that could significantly contribute to arsenite detoxification, accumulation, and immobilization. Conclusions: Culture-dependent and -independent shotgun metagenomic investigation elucidated arsenotrophic microbiomes and their functions in As biogeochemical transformation. These findings laid a foundation for further large-scale researches on the arsenotrophic microbiomes and their concurrent functions in As biogeochemical transformation in As-contaminated areas of Bangladesh and beyond. Background: The next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology facilitates in-depth study of host-pathogen metatranscriptome. We, therefore, implicated phylodynamic and transcriptomic approaches through NGS technology to know/understand the dengue virus (DENV) origin and host response with dengue fever. Methods: In this study, blood serum RNA was extracted from 21 dengue patients and 3 healthy individuals. Total transcriptomic data were analyzed for phylogenetic, phylodynamic, differential express gene (DEG), and gene ontology (GO) using respective bioinformatics tools. Results: The viral genome sequence revealed dengue viral genome size ranges 10647 to 10707 nucleotide. Phylogenetic and phylodynamic analysis showed that the 2021 epidemic isolates were DENV-3 genotype-I and maintained as a new clade in compared to 2019 epidemic. Transcriptome analysis showed a total of 2686 genes were DEG in dengue patients compared to control with a q-value < 0.05. DESeq2 plot counts function of the top 24 genes with the smallest q-values of differential gene expression of RNA-seq data showed that 11 genes were upregulated, whereas 13 genes were downregulated. GO analysis showed a significant upregulation (p = < 0.001) in a process of multicellular organismal, nervous system, sensory perception of chemical stimulus, and G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathways in the dengue patients. However, there were a significant downregulation (p = < 0.001) of intracellular component, cellular anatomical entity, and protein-containing complex in dengue patients. Most importantly, there was a significant increase of a class of immunoregulatory proteins in dengue patients in compared to the controls, with increased GO of immune system process. In addition, upregulation of toll receptor (TLR) signaling pathways were found in dengue patients. These TLR pathways were particularly involved for the activation of innate system coupled with adaptive immune system that probably involved the rapid elimination of dengue virus infected cells. These differentially expressed genes could be further investigated for target based prophylactic interventions for dengue. Conclusion: This is a first report describing DENV complete genomic features and differentially expressed genes in patients in Bangladesh. These genes may have diagnostic and therapeutic values for dengue infection. Bangladesh is not an exception to the growing global environmental problem of plastic pollution. Plastics have been deemed a blessing for today's world thanks to their inexpensive production costs, low weight, toughness, and flexibility, but poor biodegradability and massive misuse of plastics are to blame for widespread contamination of the environmental components. Plastic as well as microplastic pollution and its adverse consequences have attracted significant investigative attention all over the world. Plastic pollution is a rising concern in Bangladesh, but scientific studies, data, and related information are very scarce in numerous areas of the plastic pollution problem. The current study examined the effects of plastic and microplastic pollution on the environment and human health, and it examined Bangladesh's existing knowledge of plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems in light of the rapidly expanding international research in this field. We also made an effort to investigate the current shortcomings in Bangladesh's assessment of plastic pollution. This study proposed several management approaches to the persistent plastic pollution problem by analyzing studies from industrialized and emerging countries. A molecular phylogenetic investigation was undertaken for 30 species belonging to 15 genera of the palm family Arecaceae in Bangladesh to infer evolutionary relationships and molecular dating utilizing plastid-based matK and rbcL genes through multifacetedalgorithm driven approaches with Neighbor-Joining, Maximum-Likelihood, and Bayesian Inference methods. The study revealed that matK has better species discrimination efficiency than rbcL gene due to its highly variable nature. Transition/transversion bias test corroborated this finding as matK showed higher bias (2.632) than rbcL (2.235). Nucleotide substitution patterns were visualized via HYPERMUT program, which unveiled higher variability in matK and lower variability in rbcL alignment. Phylogenetic trees constructed with matK revealed monophyletic nature of origin for all the three subfamilies, viz. Arecoideae, Coryphoideae and Calamoideae, while rbcL trees exhibited polyphyly for Coryphoideae and monophyly for Arecoideae and Calamoideae. All the nine tribes belonging to three subfamilies demonstrated monophyletic nature in matK trees. Bootstrap support and Bayesian posterior probability were found to be higher in matK topologies than that of rbcL. The molecular clock test unraveled an equal evolutionary rate for matK and unequal rate for rbcL sequences. Molecular dating approach unveiled Calamoideae to be the most ancient subfamily (65.75 MYA) among the three subfamilies that originated during the Late Cretaceous period in the Mesozoic era, whereas Coryphoideae and Arecoideae were found to have originated in the Cenozoic era. Achieving high-yield potential is always the ultimate objective of any breeding program. However, various abiotic stresses such as salinity, drought, cold, flood, and heat hampered rice productivity tremendously. Salinity is one of the most important abiotic stresses that adversely affect rice grain yield. The present investigation was undertaken to dissect new genetic loci, which are responsible for salt tolerance at the early seedling stage in rice. A bi-parental mapping population (F2:3) was developed from the cross between BRRI dhan28/Akundi, where BRRI dhan28 (BR28) is a salt-sensitive irrigated (boro) rice mega variety and Akundi is a highly salinity-tolerant Bangladeshi origin indica rice landrace that is utilized as a donor parent. We report reliable and stable QTLs for salt tolerance from a common donor (Akundi) irrespective of two different genetic backgrounds (BRRI dhan49/Akundi and BRRI dhan28/Akundi). A robust 1k-Rice Custom Amplicon (1k-RiCA) SNP marker genotyping platform was used for genome-wide analysis of this bi-parental population. After eliminating markers with high segregation distortion, 886 polymorphic SNPs built a genetic linkage map covering 1526.5 cM of whole rice genome with an average SNP density of 1.72 cM for the 12 genetic linkage groups. A total of 12 QTLs for nine different salt tolerance-related traits were identified using QGene and inclusive composite interval mapping of additive and dominant QTL (ICIM-ADD) under salt stress on seven different chromosomes. All of these 12 new QTLs were found to be unique, as no other map from the previous study has reported these QTLs in the similar chromosomal location and found them different from extensively studied Saltol, SKC1, OsSalT, and salT locus. Twenty-eight significant digenic/epistatic interactions were identified between chromosomal regions linked to or unlinked to QTLs. Akundi acts like a new alternate donor source of salt tolerance except for other usually known donors such as Nona Bokra, Pokkali, Capsule, and Hasawi used in salt tolerance genetic analysis and breeding programs worldwide, including Bangladesh. Integration of the seven novel, reliable, stable, and background independent salinity-resilient QTLs (qSES1, qSL1, qRL1, qSUR1, qSL8, qK8, qK1) reported in this investigation will expedite the cultivar development that is highly tolerant to salt stress. An experiment was conducted at the Vegetable Research field of Horticulture Research Centre Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh, during October 2018 to February 2019to find out the effect of plant spacingand mulchon yield and yield attributes of squash. The experiment comprised two sets of treatments viz., (a) Plant spacing:(i) 1 m × 0.8 m (S1); (ii) 1 m × 1 m (S2) and 1m × 1.5 (S3) and (b)Mulch: (i) No mulch (M1); (ii) Straw mulch(M2) and (iii)Polythene mulch (M3) in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The variety BARI squash-1 was used in this experiment. The results showed that 1m × 1.5 plant spacing showed significantly the highest yield attributes and quality parameters but 1m × 1 m plant spacing showed significantly the highest yield ha-1. Polythene mulch showed significantly the highest fruit plant-1, yield plant-1 and yield ha-1. Fruit size, individual fruit weight and quality parameter did not show any significant difference irrespective of mulching. The interaction between plant spacing and mulch was significant for yield and quality parameters. Based on the study results it is concluded that maximum yield (50.20 t ha-1) was achieved through 1m × 1 m plant spacing with polythene much but higher TSS and vitamin C was found through 1m × 1.5 m plant spacing with polythene much. Establishing and managing protected areas is a common approach for in situ conservation of wildlife and their habitats, but its effectiveness relies on the magnitude of anthropogenic pressures and their successful mitigation. Bangladesh is a densely populated country, and demand for land and natural resources is accelerated in and around the remaining forests. It is particularly of concern for an important transboundary hill forest, called the Patharia Hill Reserve in the northeastern Bangladesh, which appears to be the last resort for many important forest mammals. We conducted a camera-trap survey for assessing the occurrence of mammals in this tropical forest patch during January 2019 and July 2021. An effort of 2,805 trap-nights yielded 1,986 records of 22 medium and large-sized mammal species. We confirmed the presence of globally 'Vulnerable' Fishing Cat, Oriental Small-clawed Otter, Hog Badger, & Northern Pig-tailed Macaque and the globally 'Endangered' Phayre's Langur in this study. Our records include a number of species which are either the first record for the northeastern region or have been detected after several decades. In contrast, we could not detect several large carnivores which were recorded previously in the study site and in the Indian side of Patharia Hill Reserve. This study highlights the conservation value of this poorly known reserve forest, and presents a call for immediate action to maintain its function as a transboundary forest area. An ethnobotanical investigation was carried out in Gafargaon sub-district (upazila) under Mymensingh district, Bangladesh that unveiled a total of 79 medicinal plant species under 74 genera and 46 families which were used to treat various ailments through 106 formularies. In addition, molecular docking and dynamics simulation studies were performed based on ethnobotanical outcome for the first time in Bangladesh to unveil potential drug candidates. The study revealed that most of the species used for primary healthcare were herbs (44.3%) followed by trees (36.7%), shrubs (10.2%) and climbers (8.8%). Leaves were found to be the most frequently used part (34%) compared to other plant parts. Factor of informant consensus values ranged from 0.975 to 0.984 and the highest value was recorded for respiratory tract disorders (0.984). Maximum number of taxa was unraveled to treat digestive and gastrointestinal disorders. Fidelity level varied from 41.2 to 100%, where 11 species showed 100% fidelity, and the citation frequency was found above 70% for 15 different ailments. Molecular docking study exposed 60% Stephania japonica phytocompounds scoring higher than the control drug Ibuprofen (-7.0 kcal/mol) targeting rheumatoid arthritis. The phytocompounds Oxostephanine, Trilobine and Epistephanine were identified as lead drug candidates with binding affinity of -9.7, -8.7 and -8.6 kcal/mol, respectively. Molecular interactions of these compounds were found significant to identify potential drug surface hotspots. Molecular dynamics simulation shed light on regional flexibility profiles and unraveled notable structural stability of the top three phytocompounds. Background: Although the Rome IV criteria are the most recent criteria to diagnose irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), their sensitivity has been shown to be low in Chinese and Western populations. There are scanty data comparing the Rome III and Rome IV criteria in diagnosis of IBS in the Indian and Bangladeshi populations where abdominal pain, an essential component of diagnosis of IBS by the Rome IV criteria, is less in frequency and of lower severity. Methods: We analyzed the Indian and Bangladeshi data from the Rome Global Epidemiology Study to compare diagnostic sensitivity of the Rome III and Rome IV criteria for IBS, internal shifts in diagnostic categories of disorders of gut–brain interaction (DGBI), the severity of IBS diagnosed by the Rome III and Rome IV criteria, and consultation patterns in these populations. Key Results: The Rome IV criteria were less sensitive than the Rome III criteria to diagnose IBS in these populations, and the subjects with Rome III IBS shifted internally to other DGBI when the Rome IV criteria were applied. Moreover, Rome IV IBS subjects had greater symptom severity than the Rome III IBS. A third of people fulfilling diagnostic criteria for IBS consulted doctors, and those diagnosed using Rome IV criteria, those with higher anxiety and depression symptom score, lower global physical health score, and greater IBS symptom severity score had greater correlation coefficients with doctors' consultation. Conclusions and Inferences: The Rome IV diagnostic criteria for IBS are less sensitive than the Rome III criteria in Indian and Bangladesh communities. Application of the Rome IV criteria to people who meet the Rome III IBS criteria selects a subgroup of people with greater severity of symptoms, and hence, Rome IV IBS is more strongly associated with physician consultation. Responding effectively to climate crisis requires strong science-policy links to be put in place. Past research on the research-policy interface indicates longstanding challenges that have become more acute in the case of climate science, since this requires multi-disciplinary approaches and faces distinctive political challenges in linking knowledge with policy. What can be learned from the experiences of university-based researchers seeking to influence policy as they try to operate in the brokering space? With this in mind, an empirical study was designed to capture the detailed views and experiences of forty researchers in four universities across four countries—Bangladesh, Germany, Uganda and UK. It found a wide range of different researcher attitudes to policy engagement, diverse methods of engaging, a preference for working with government and civil society over private sector policy actors, and a perceived need for more university support. The findings suggest a need to rethink conditions for engagement to create spaces for knowledge exchange and cooperation that can contribute to policies for societal transformation. More attention also needs to be paid to interdisciplinary research approaches, improving research connections with private sector actors, and strengthening university research links with local communities. Finally, the position of university based researchers in the Global South will require strengthening to improve North–South knowledge exchange, capacity development, and incentives for policy engagement. Background: Heat stress has a considerable effect both on animal welfare and production. Animals in heat stressreduceproductivity and reproductive performances and in extreme cases, it causes death. Methods: The experiment was carried out in Satkhira, a South-Western part of Bangladesh from July 2019 to June 2020 for 12 months period to investigate the year-round heat stress experienced by cattle raised in a Deep Bedded Pack System (DBP) compared to that raised on a concrete floor (CF) system in an open barn. A total of six dry cows (2.5 to 3 yearsold, Holstein-Friesian crossbred) were allotted into two groups with three replications. The deep bedded pack was prepared with rice husk. The heat stress was calculated by following an equation using temperature and humidity data. Result: Animals raised on a concrete floor were suffered moderate to severe heat stress for eight months in a year from March to October. Otherwise, animals on the DBP floor were suffered from moderate heat stress only for five months, from June to October in a year. No severe case was found on the DBP floor but severe heat stress was shown by animals on the concrete floor from July to September. We aimed to determine: (1) the prevalence and socio-economic distribution of undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM); (2) the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM; and (3) if this relationship is mediated by gender. Cross-sectional nationally representative household-based survey. We used data from the Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey from 2017 to 18. Our findings were based on the responses of 12,144 individuals aged 18 years and older. As a measure of SES, we focused on standard of living (hereinafter referred to as wealth). The study's outcome variables were prevalence of total (diagnosed + undiagnosed), undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM. We used three regression-based approaches—adjusted odds ratio, relative inequality index, and slope inequality index—to assess different aspects of SES differences in the prevalence of total, undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM. We used logistic regression analysis to look at the adjusted association between SES and the outcomes after gender stratification to see whether gender status moderates the association between SES and the targeted outcomes. In our sample analysis, the age-adjusted prevalence of total, undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM was 9.1%, 61.4%, 64.7%, and 72.1%, respectively. Females had a higher prevalence of DM and undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM than males. When compared to people in the poor SES group, people in the rich and middle SES groups had 2.60 times (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.05–3.29) and 1.47 times (95% CI 1.18–1.83) higher chance of developing DM. When compared to individuals in the poor SES group, those in the rich SES groups were 0.50 (95% CI 0.33–0.77) and 0.55 times (95% CI 0.36–0.85) less likely to have undiagnosed and untreated DM. In Bangladesh, rich SES groups were more likely than poor SES groups to have DM, whereas poor SES groups with DM were less likely than rich SES groups to be aware of their disease and obtain treatment. The government and other concerned parties are urged by this study to pay more attention to developing suitable policy measures to reduce the risk of DM, particularly among rich SES groups, as well as targeted efforts to screen for and diagnose DM in socio-economically disadvantaged groups. Populations of different South Asian nations including Bangladesh reportedly have a high risk of developing diabetes in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the differences in the gut microbiome of COVID‐19‐positive participants with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) compared with healthy control subjects. Microbiome data of 30 participants with T2DM were compared with 22 age‐, sex‐, and body mass index (BMI)‐matched individuals. Clinical features were recorded while fecal samples were collected aseptically from the participants. Amplicon‐based (16S rRNA) metagenome analyses were employed to explore the dysbiosis of gut microbiota and its correlation with genomic and functional features in COVID‐19 patients with or without T2DM. Comparing the detected bacterial genera across the sample groups, 98 unique genera were identified, of which 9 genera had unique association with COVID‐19 T2DM patients. Among different bacterial groups, Shigella (25%), Bacteroides (23.45%), and Megamonas (15.90%) had higher mean relative abundances in COVID‐19 patients with T2DM. An elevated gut microbiota dysbiosis in T2DM patients with COVID‐19 was observed while some metabolic functional changes correlated with bidirectional microbiome dysbiosis between diabetes and non‐diabetes humans gut were also found. Purpose: This study examines the value of self-reported health (SRH) as an indicator of underlying health status in a developing country setting. Design and Methods: Logistic regression methods with adjustments for multistage sampling are used to examine the factors associated with SRH in 2,921 men and women aged 50 and older in rural Bangladesh. Results: SRH incorporates multiple dimensions of health status (including physical disability assessed by measured physical performance; self-reported limitations in activities of daily living, or ADLs; self-reported chronic morbidity; and self-reported acute morbidity), severity, comorbidity, and trajectory in a similar fashion for both men and women and for different age groups. Older individuals are more likely to report poor SRH than their younger counterparts, and women report significantly worse SRH than their male peers at each age group. In both cases, this disadvantage can be fully accounted for by differences in measured physical performance, ADL limitations, and chronic and acute morbidity. Implications: Among older Bangladeshis, SRH is an easily recorded, multifaceted, nuanced indicator of underlying health status that is significantly associated with measured physical performance. Moreover, SRH appears to be independent of age- and gender-related norms.

Traditionally women are mostly engaged in household-based income generating activities. Post-harvest processing of vegetables has recently gained much attention due to its value addition utilities. Therefore, in this study, we tried to understand women farmers' attitudes towards and involvement in, post-harvest processing of vegetables. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a pre-tested questionnaire from 212 respondents in Dhaka district of Bangladesh. The data were interpreted with descriptive statistics, multivariate regression analysis and a logit model. About 71% of rural women had a favorable attitude towards post-harvest processing; 43% were involved in the postharvest processing of vegetables. Women's attitude towards post-harvest processing of vegetables was influenced by age, education, household size, and their frequency of traveling outside of their social system. Their involvement in postharvest processing of vegetables was affected by education, group membership, media contact and time spent in home management. 'Gender disparity in earnings' was the most severe barrier to expanding women's involvement in vegetable processing, followed by 'lack of land ownership status', 'spouse dominance' and 'social norms and tradition'. Motivating women in income-generating activities and introducing advanced yet low-cost and less-labour-intensive technologies would enable them to participate in the post-harvest processing of vegetables. Background: The study aimed to determine the outcome of Multidisciplinary physiotherapist-led conservative treatment of lumbar disc herniation at an in-patient set-up of a specialized spine center in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of 228 cases completing treatment and follow-up sessions. The outcome was evaluated as pain at rest and five different functional positions, neurological recovery, and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes during discharge and follow-up. Results: 80.3% had a complete recovery with a typical motor and sensory status, no limitations in straight leg raise (SLR), no cauda equina symptom (CES), and no or < 3 pain during more than 30 minutes of daily living activities. Statistically significant changes were noted at all outcome measures at the follow-up (day 90), compared to baseline (day 1) P< 0.01. In the posthoc tests, pain, SLR, and CES had the most significant improvement at discharge (day 12) compared to the baseline (P < 0.01) and at follow-up compared to discharge (P < 0.01). No major adverse events noted. Conclusion: Physiotherapist-led in-patient treatment results in significant resting and functional pain outcomes in 12 days. The development of an effective and profitable exploration and production depends heavily on the quality of the reservoir. The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the reservoir quality of the Neogene Surma Group at the Srikail Gas Field, which is situated in the western part of the eastern folded belt of the Bengal Basin, Bangladesh. Wire-line logs, core analysis, petrography, X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to understand the depositional and diagenetic controls of the quality of the reservoir. The Surma Group of the Srikail Gas Field was deposited in a delta system with a dominant influence of tide. The subarkosic to sublitharenitic Neogene Surma Group sandstones have primary porosities ranging from 0% to 25.8%, with an average of 21.5%, and the secondary porosity is approximately 7%. The range of log porosity ranges from 15% to 22.2%, while log permeability and core permeability vary from 3.01 to 54.09 mD and 0.1 to 76 mD, respectively. The primary porosity had been destroyed mainly by mechanical and ductile grain compaction. Most of the clay minerals (illite/illite-smectite, chlorite and kaolinite) in sandstone occur as grain coatings, grain lining (rim) and a few occur as pore-filling. This study reveals that the reservoir quality is predominantly controlled by the depositional environment (sediment texture and facies, ductile grain supply, clay content), and diagenetic process (mainly mechanical and ductile grain compaction followed by clay cement). There is lack of information on the histological characteristics of the intestinal mucosa in Bangladeshi children. Collection of intestinal biopsy samples and assessment of the histomorphological features is considered to be the traditional gold standard for diagnosis of environmental enteric dysfunction (EED). The purpose of the study was to evaluate the intestinal histological characteristics of stunted children aged between 12–18 months with possible EED. 110 children with chronic malnutrition (52 stunted with length-for-age Z score, LAZ<-2 and 58 at risk of stunting with LAZ <-1 to -2) from the Bangladesh Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (BEED) study protocol who underwent upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy were selected for this study. To explore the association of EED with childhood stunting, upper GI endoscopy was done and the biopsy specimens were studied for histopathology. Villous height and crypt depth were measured and the presence and intensity of inflammatory infiltrates in the lamina propria was investigated. Bivariate analysis was performed to examine the relationship between stunting and histologic morphology. More than 90% children irrespective of nutritional status were diagnosed to have chronic non-specific duodenitis on histopathology. Half of the children from both groups had villous atrophy as well as crypt hyperplasia and lymphocytic infiltration was present in more than 90% children, irrespective of groups. However, no statistically significant difference was observed when compared between the groups. The prevalence of chronic non-specific duodenitis in Bangladeshi children, irrespective of nutritional status, was high. A significant number of these children had abnormal findings in intestinal histomorphology. The objectives of current study were to assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with postpartum anestrus in lactating dairy cows in Sylhet region, Bangladesh. A total of 420 postpartum cows of different breed and age were selected randomly from different dairy farms in studied area. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data from farm owner on prevalence and risk factors for postpartum anestrus. Observed heat within 60 days after parturition was considered as normal cyclic cows and others were considered as postpartum anestrus. The prevalence of postpartum anestrus was 36.20%. The study shows that older cows take relatively more time for ovarian resumption. Cow’s having first parity shows cyclicity within 60 days of parturition, and postpartum anestrus increases significantly with the advancement of parity. Postpartum anestrus was significantly higher (P< 0.001) in cows with poor (≤1.0) and excessive (>3) body condition scores (BCS), respectively, compared to those with moderate/optimal BCS (2– 3). The postpartum cyclicity in cows within 60 days with a history of normal placental expulsion was significantly higher than in the cows with RFM. Ovarian cyclicity was highest (75.92%) among the cows that were maintained in adequate hygienic conditions and lowest (43.51%) in a poor environment. The highest percentage (88.10%) of cows showed postpartum cyclicity with a history of short lactation length (0-150 days) and resumption of postpartum estrus cycle increases significantly with lactation length. Resumption of postpartum estrus cycles in cows takes more time with a history of minimal (<15 liters) daily milk production than the cow with medium (>15-25 liters) daily milk production. Cows get an adequate feed supply (both concentrate and green grass), which shows a positive effect on postpartum cyclicity. Pre and postpartum complications have a significant (p<0.001) effect on the postpartum cyclicity of cows. Endometritis (81.25%) followed by pyometra (75.76%) were recorded as major reproductive obstacles in ovarian resumption, whereas uterine prolapse (70.59%) followed by abortion (61.54%), milk fever (58.33%), stillbirth (58.33%) and dystocia (57.63%) were the major recorded complications in post-partum phase. The study also revealed that the non-restricted suckling period has a significant (p<0.001) negative effect on ovarian resumption. The risk factors including parity, BCS, placental expulsion, hygienic condition, lactation length, daily milk production and management system were significantly (P<0.01) influenced the postpartum cyclicity. Maintaining optimal BCS of cows, proper hygienic and good management practice, and farmer's training on management of cattle reproduction would improve the number of cows for breeding by 60 days postpartum. In Bangladesh, groundwater is the main source of both drinking water and irrigation. Suction lift pumps and force mode of operation are the predominant technologies for groundwater abstraction in Bangladesh. For a sustainable usage policy, it is thus important to identify which technology would be more appropriate for which area in Bangladesh. With that aim in mind, this paper proposes a methodology that leverages the power of machine learning that can potentially learn intricate relationships between the (annual maximum) groundwater level (GWL) and the relevant hydrogeological factors (HGFs). A number of machine learning algorithms—both classification and regression models—was trained. Our classification models were trained as a binary classifier to predict the abstraction technology of a particular point. Notably, our best classification model was based on the Random Forest algorithm, which achieved an accuracy of 91% and an excellent value of 96% for the area under receiver operating characteristics curve, indicating its strong discriminant capability. We also identified (elevation derived from) digital elevation model, specific yield and lithology as the three most important HGFs for GWL in Bangladesh. On the other hand, to predict the actual (annual maximum) GWL, we employed a two-stage approach, where we first employed the above-mentioned classification model to identify the suitable abstraction technology for the point of interest and subsequently predict the actual GWL using the appropriate Random Forest regressor. This also had a reasonable accuracy (minimum absolute error was less than 1 for suction mode and less than 5 for the force mode). Background: Bangladeshi farmers are not getting optimum outcomes from livestock farming due to various obstacles in farming, including a lack of modern technological and scientific knowledge. Therefore, this research was aimed at comprehending the knowledge, perceptions, and practices of deworming and parasitic disease control activities among peri-urban livestock farmers in the Barishal district of Bangladesh. Methods: Data on the knowledge, perceptions, and practices of deworming and parasitic disease control activities of 207 peri-urban livestock farmers were collected randomly from different areas of the Barishal district. A pre-tested questionnaire was administered via a face-to-face interview between June 2020 and December 2020 to collect data. The frequencies were expressed in percentage (%) and the association between farmer's education and knowledge of parasitic disease prevention, control, and deworming activities were evaluated by crosstab analysis in IBM SPSS software (version 25). Results: The study revealed that 27.5% of the farmers provided impure water to their animals. Almost 100.0% of farmers were found to wash their hands before and after contacting the animals. About 29.0% of farmers were not accustomed to cleaning the farms and excreta regularly. Only 18.8% of respondents permitted their animals to co-graze with other animals. Approximately 45% of participants used anthelmintics regularly, and 32.4% of participants were informed of the scheduled deworming practices for their animals. Surprisingly, 96.6% of respondents never participated in deworming and parasitic disease control training programs. However, 100% of farmers agreed that parasitic disease control is essential for profitable farming and increasing production. Conclusion: A large proportion of farmers rear their livestock without deworming practices, and they are not aware of helminthiasis control and prevention. Background: Species threatening is of great concern now-a-days, for Bangladesh as well as the whole world. Present research work has been carried out to make an inventory of the medicinal species of family Fabaceae, determine their status in the flora of Bangladesh and assess their probable threat. Methods: Research was carried out at the University of Chittagong during the period 2014-2016 by the first author as part of her thesis work. Previous records of species were collected from different literatures dating back to 1814 and their place of occurrence was recorded as well. Medicinal literatures were consulted for screening of medicinal species of Fabaceae. Herbarium specimens preserved at different herbaria were examined for updating the time of their collection. Finally field trips were made to relevant localities for assessing their status in the field condition. Result: The present study reveals that out of 254 total species, 169 species under 61 genera have medicinal properties. In this investigation, 7 species under 7 genera were identified and documented as Critically Endangered according to International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources criteria. Enumeration of these threatened taxa is provided with updated nomenclature and short annotation with data on medicinal value, recorded locality, global distribution, first and last authentic record and list of specimens available at different herbaria.
