Now-a-days mobile phone is very important communicational device. This cableless device reduces the hazards of the land phone. In spite of its various advantages it has some disadvantages also. Misusing of mobile phone increases the disadvantages of this device day by day. Unnecessary talking makes the reasons of wasting the money and time for the youth. Modern cell phones enable users to access a variety of electronic media at almost any time and any place. At present, the cell phone is likely to be on hand while university students are in class and studying. Thus, the main purpose of the present study is to investigate the usages pattern of cell phone in class room with the help of the evidences from Mathematical and Physical Science Faculty Students of Jahangirnagar University. The result shows that a cell phone is a very important tool for study as most of the respondents used their phones for study purposes. Cell phones are increasingly one of the most popular information access devices and multiuser functions which can be beneficial during study. This study suggests that mobile phone designers must take into account how young people use cell phones for educational purposes. The presence of cell phones presents a host of options and challenges for today's students. Higher institutions can take advantage of the potential and capitalize on the cell phone for educational purposes because of the intrinsic motivation of university students in wanting to communicate among themselves.

Background: Bangladesh has reported > 560 H5N1 outbreaks in poultry and eight human cases since 2007. Commercial chicken farms were mostly affected. Commercial chicken farms across the country use imported vaccines against H5N1 virus; however, these vaccines did not use local circulatory isolates of H5N1virus. Vaccination may have limited effectiveness in chicken because of the mismatch in terms of subtypes and clades. To test this, we conducted a mixed-method study to assess the impact of ongoing vaccination against H5N1 virus on H5N1 viral shedding through freshly dropped feces of chickens raised in commercial farms that exclusively vaccinated or did not vaccinate their chickens. Methods: Initially, we collected vaccination coverage data from all active farms in a subdistrict of each of eight division. In each district, 25 vaccinated and 25 non-vaccinated chicken farms were selected randomly for sample collection. All samples were tested to detect avian influenza viruses using rRT-PCR. Results: A total of 5092 poultry farms were surveyed; among them 1284 (25%) chicken farms administered vaccine against H5N1 virus. In total 21 of 400 tested farms (5%) had chicken feces samples that tested positive for AIVs; of these three were positive for H5N1 subtype of clade 2.3.2.1. Out of three H5N1 positive farms, 1 (33%) was vaccinated and 2 (67%) were unvaccinated. The chicken farms that administered vaccine against H5N1 was found protective for the detection of H5N1 viral RNA (aOR 0.39, 95% CI: 0.32–0.48). The H5N1 isolates of clade 2.3.2.1 sequenced in this study formed a cluster with the vaccine strain A/duck/Guangdong/S1322/2010 (H5N1) [Re-6]. Conclusions: The overall low vaccination coverage with low detection of H5N1 virus in commercial chickens makes it difficult to assess the effectiveness of the vaccine in reducing H5N1 viral shedding. The Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS), situated in the southeastern part of Bangladesh, is a crucial forest biodiversity hotspot in Bangladesh currently having tremendous pressure due to various socioeconomic factors. The key objective of the study is to find out the degradation of the forest cover by land use and land cover (LULC) classification of TWS from 1991 to 2021 using Google Earth Engine (GEE) application programming interface (API)-based supervised classification approaches. The study used satellite and key informant interviews (KIIs) data to detect the forest landscape’s degradation and find the potential solution to combat the degradation. It also used ArcGIS spatial analysis tools for LULC change detection and mapping. The investigation found that the dense forest vegetation in the TWS decreased by 1389 ha from 1991 (4665 ha) to 2021 (3277 ha), which is 12% of the study area. Similarly, the agricultural land, covering 3.34% of TWS, decreased by 388 ha from 1991 to 2021. The human settlement, light forests, and built-up areas showed an increase of 8% (930 ha), 6% (694 ha), and 1.3% (148 ha), respectively, in the last three decades. Although the increment of the built-up area is small, it poses severe threats to the biodiversity and flow of ecosystem services from TWS. The KIIs indicated that the Rohingya influx, overexploitation by high population density, lack of mass awareness, illegal felling, expansion of human settlements, and fuelwood supply to the brick fields, factories, government and non-government organization’s offices and warehouses are abiotic drivers of forest degradation. At the same time, cyclones, reduced rainfall, and increased temperature were the natural causes. The study suggested measures to combat the degradation of the forest landscape, enabling policymakers to plan measures to retard further degradation of the TWS and conserve the threatened and rare species for reinstalling the ecosystem services. This study devised a 20-item, six-dimensional Employability Skills Index for entry-level jobs in marketing and sales based on the perceptions of students, and a second, 22-item, six-dimensional Employability Skills Index based on the perceptions of employers. Both indexes demonstrated sound reliability, and we presented initial support for the validity of the scales. The study was based on 418 and 973 survey responses collected from Bangladeshi corporate managers and university students, respectively. The study revealed substantial differences in opinions between employers and students on employability skills required for entry-level marketing and sales positions. Managers prioritized skills such as planning, organizing ability, experience, professionalism, type of major courses taken, and positive attitude towards work. On the other hand, students prioritized skills such as commitment to the organization, commitment to the job area, complex problem-solving skills, internship in a relevant field, critical thinking ability, and basic knowledge of selling.

The zoonotic Nipah virus (NiV) is very lethal and may spread from animals to people. There is yet no known cure or therapy for NiV. The outbreaks are seasonal in Bangladesh, occurring between December and April, with cases reported almost annually. Since the virus was discovered in Bangladesh in 2001, 341 individuals had been affected, and as of February 2024, 242 fatalities have been documented. The case fatality rate (CFR) for NiV has been estimated to range from 40 to 75% in Bangladesh according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). As a result of the high CFR, difficulties in diagnosing the virus, and lack of specific treatments or vaccines for NiV infection, the WHO rates the overall risk at the national level as moderate. Background: A number of studies have detected relationships between weather and diarrhea. Few have investigated associations with specific enteric pathogens. Understanding pathogen-specific relationships with weather is crucial to inform public health in low-resource settings that are especially vulnerable to climate change. Objectives: Our objectives were to identify weather and environmental risk factors associated with diarrhea and enteropathogen prevalence in young children in rural Bangladesh, a population with high diarrheal disease burden and vulnerability to weather shifts under climate change. Methods: We matched temperature, precipitation, surface water, and humidity data to observational longitudinal data from a cluster-randomized trial that measured diarrhea and enteropathogen prevalence in children 6 months-5.5 years from 2012–2016. We fit generalized additive mixed models with cubic regression splines and restricted maximum likelihood estimation for smoothing parameters. Results: Comparing weeks with 30°C versus 15°C average temperature, prevalence was 3.5% higher for diarrhea, 7.3% higher for Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), 17.3% higher for enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), and 8.0% higher for Cryptosporidium. Above-median weekly precipitation (median: 13mm; range: 0-396mm) was associated with 29% higher diarrhea (adjusted prevalence ratio 1.29, 95% CI 1.07, 1.55); higher Cryptosporidium, ETEC, STEC, Shigella, Campylobacter, Aeromonas, and adenovirus 40/41; and lower Giardia, sapovirus, and norovirus prevalence. Other associations were weak or null. Discussion: Higher temperatures and precipitation were associated with higher prevalence of diarrhea and multiple enteropathogens; higher precipitation was associated with lower prevalence of some enteric viruses. Our findings emphasize the heterogeneity of the relationships between hydrometeorological variables and specific enteropathogens, which can be masked when looking at composite measures like all-cause diarrhea. Our results suggest that preventive interventions targeted to reduce enteropathogens just before and during the rainy season may more effectively reduce child diarrhea and enteric pathogen carriage in rural Bangladesh and in settings with similar meteorological characteristics, infrastructure, and enteropathogen transmission. Author summary: Location-specific weather factors influence the fate, transport, and transmission of enteropathogens that cause diarrhea. We sought to identify hydrometeorological risk factors associated with childhood diarrhea and specific enteropathogens in rural Bangladesh. In this setting, higher temperatures and precipitation were associated with higher diarrhea in children under 5 years old and with several enteropathogens including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Higher precipitation was associated with the lower prevalence of some enteric viruses. Background and Objective. Motorbikes are a popular mode of transportation in developing nations, especially in places where public transportation is not easily accessible. This research aims to investigate the prevalence of road traffic crashes (RTCs) among motorcyclists in Noakhali, Bangladesh, and to identify the factors that play a role in these crashes. Methods. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire involving 402 motorcyclists from four major southeastern towns, comprising 350 (86.07%) males and 52 (12.93%) females. The chi-square test was applied in bivariate analysis, and binary multivariable logistic regression was performed to determine the risk factors of road traffic crashes. Results. This study's findings revealed that the overall reported prevalence of road traffic crashes involving motorcycle drivers over one year was 68.66%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed several factors that significantly impacted road traffic crashes. These factors included driving without a valid driving license, the young age (<20) of motorcyclists, driving in rainy weather, exceeding the speed limit, per-week working hours, smoking status, motorcycle ownership, the brand of motorcycle, and not wearing a helmet while driving. Conclusion. The study findings highlight the need for improving motorcycle safety by implementing measures such as imposing per-week work hour limits for riders, enforcing traffic regulations, and promoting helmet use among motorcycle drivers. The results of this study draw attention to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and motorcycle drivers in the country to decrease motorcycle crashes and the severity of injuries by implementing efficient guidelines and strategies for driving motorcycles. Background and Aims: Water scarcity and poor water quality could lead to suboptimum menstrual hygiene practices, and subsequently urinary tract infection (UTI) and bacterial vaginosis (BV). In this study, we estimate the prevalence of self‐reported UTI and BV among indigenous adolescent girls during the water scarcity period in the Bandarban Hill Districts in south‐eastern Bangladesh. Methods: Using a cross‐sectional design, a total of 242 indigenous adolescent girls were selected and interviewed during the seasonal water scarcity period (from February to May 2022) in Bandarban. The difference in prevalence of any self‐reported UTI or BV symptoms by respondents' characteristics was assessed by χ2 test. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to observe the associated factors. Results: The prevalence of self‐reported UTI, BV, and any symptoms of UTI or BV among the respondents were 35.54%, 28.93%, and 43.80%, respectively. Ethnicity, studentship status, source of water used for menstrual hygiene, and perceived water quality were significantly associated with the prevalence of any self‐reported UTI or BV symptoms. Conclusion: Findings recommend further research to cross‐check the validity of self‐reported prevalence and investigate if the episodes of UTI or BV could be attributable to water scarcity and poor water quality in study areas during dry period. This research presents a comprehensive study on developing and evaluating a deep learning-based forecasting model for hourly energy demand prediction in Bangladesh. Leveraging a novel dataset obtained from the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), the proposed model utilizes bi-directional long short-term memory networks (Bi-LSTMs), implemented through Tensor-Flow and Keras libraries. The study meticulously preprocesses the data, handling missing values and ensuring compatibility with the selected models. The models are trained and evaluated using Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Squared Error (MSE) metrics, revealing promising results of 376.72 of MAE. The experimental findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed forecasting model, showcasing its capability to predict energy demand accurately. Objective: The study was primarily conducted to assess the stakeholders' knowledge regarding the contamination caused by heavy metals in poultry feedstuffs. The concentration of some heavy metals (lead, chromium, cadmium, and nickel) and macro-minerals (sodium, potassium, and calcium) was also analyzed in poultry feeds collected from selected local markets in Sherpur district, Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: A well-structured questionnaire survey was used to investigate different stakeholders' perspectives in relation to metal contamination in feed. Heavy metals and calcium were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The flame emission spectrophotometric technique was applied to determine sodium and potassium. Results: The majority of the stakeholders (90%) were found to have no knowledge regarding heavy metal contamination. Lead and nickel concentrations were below the detectable level in the collected samples. The average concentration of chromium in Jhenaigati upazila was four times higher than in Nalitabari upazila, at 21.806 mg kg-1 and 5.452 mg kg-1, respectively. The concentrations of cadmium in both brand and nonbrand samples exceeded the maximum allowable limit set by the European Union at 1.329 mg kg-1 and 1.328 mg kg-1, respectively. Sodium, potassium, and calcium were found in the ranges of 0.0011%-0.0035%, 0.0010%-0.0013%, and 0.0080%-0.0305%, which were extremely low in concentration compared to the minimum requirement in poultry feed. Conclusion: Regular surveillance and governance systems should be incorporated into national policy to cease the hazardous impacts of heavy metals through feed contamination. To the Editor, Antibiotics are a class of drug used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria; they function by either eradicating the organism or stopping its growth. Penicillin, cephalosporins, macrolides, fluoroquinolones, and urinary anti-infectives are examples of common antibiotics. To effectively treat the illness, it's critical to take antibiotics as directed by a physician and to finish the entire course of treatment. Antibiotic resistance is a serious issue in Bangladesh as a result of subpar healthcare practices, antibiotic abuse, and overuse. Antibiotic resistance is the result of bacteria changing and becoming resistant to an antibiotic's effects. Moreover, one of Bangladesh's biggest challenges is the fight against antibiotic resistance. Therefore, the purpose of this letter is to raise awareness of the antibiotic resistance in Bangladesh. Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a severe impact on population health. The genetic determinants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in southern Bangladesh are not well understood. Methods: This study aimed to determine the genomic variation in SARS-CoV-2 genomes that have evolved over 2 years of the pandemic in southern Bangladesh and their association with disease outcomes and virulence of this virus. We investigated demographic variables, disease outcomes of COVID-19 patients and genomic features of SARS-CoV-2. Results: We observed that the disease severity was significantly higher in adults (85.3%) than in children (14.7%), because the expression of angiotensinconverting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) diminishes with ageing that causes differences in innate and adaptive immunity. The clade GK (n = 66) was remarkable between June 2021 and January 2022. Because of the mutation burden, another clade, GRA started a newly separated clustering in December 2021. The burden was significantly higher in GRA (1.5-fold) highlighted in mild symptoms of COVID-19 patients than in other clades (GH, GK, and GR). Mutations were accumulated mainly in S (22.15 mutations per segment) and ORF1ab segments. Missense (67.5%) and synonymous (18.31%) mutations were highly noticed in adult patients with mild cases rather than severe cases, especially in ORF1ab segments. Moreover, we observed many unique mutations in S protein in mild cases compared to severe, and homology modeling revealed that those might cause more folding in the protein's alpha helix and beta sheets. Conclusion: Our study identifies some risk factors such as age comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, and renal disease) that are associated with severe COVID-19, providing valuable insight regarding prioritizing vaccination for high-risk individuals and allocating health care and resources. The findings of this work outlined the knowledge and mutational basis of SARS-CoV-2 for the next treatment steps. Further studies are needed to confirm the effects of structural and functional proteins of SARS-CoV-2 in detail for monitoring the emergence of new variants in future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 omicron variant is exceptionally complicated and uncertain due to its rapid transmission and volume of infections. This study examines the impact of climatic factors on daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 omicron variant in Bangladesh. The secondary data of daily confirmed cases from 1 January 2022, to 31 March 2022, of eight distinct geographic divisions have been used for the current study. The multivariate generalized linear negative binomial regression model was applied to determine the effects of climatic factors on omicron transmission. The model revealed that the maximum temperature (Odds: 0.67, p < 0.05), sky clearness (Odds: 0.05, p < 0.05), wind speed (Odds: 0.76, p < 0.05), relative humidity (Odds: 1.02, p < 0.05), and air pressure (Odds: 0.27, p < 0.05) significantly impacted COVID-19 omicron transmission in Bangladesh. Purpose: Zakat, one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, holds the potential to significantly contribute to fiscal consolidation, particularly in developing nations. However, the national-level potential of Zakat often remains unexplored. This study aims to explore the potential of national-level Zakat and the opportunity to integrate it into the fiscal framework. Design/methodology/approach: This study estimates Zakat's potential on national financial and economic components. The components include bank deposits, shares and securities, pensions (provident fund), industrial production and trade services, mining resources, Ushr on agro-crops and forestry, Ushr on livestock, Ushr on fishery, gross domestic product (GDP), national budget and national revenue. The study gathers data, ranging from FY2000 to FY2018, on national economic sectors from reliable secondary sources. The net value (NV) of each indicator is calculated as NV = TV − LA, where NV is the wage-adjusted net value after deducting the living adjustment (LA) value from the sectoral total. The proposed LA value, approximately 20%, is suggested to be deducted from the total sectoral value of each sector (excluding specific industries with preadjusted wages), equating to the Nisab value. Findings: It is estimated that the aggregate potential of Zakat in Bangladesh was US$9,749m in FY2018, compared to US$809m in FY2000, revealing the value is 3.77% of GDP and 21% of the national fiscal budget. In FY2018, the service sector was the largest contributor (30%), followed by bank deposits (23%). Pension funds made minimal contributions, whereas shares and bonds, as well as the manufacturing sector, each made a 10% contribution to the estimated Zakat potential. Zakat on agriculture output accounted for 15% of the total. The aggregate potential Zakat in FY2018 was 12% higher than that in FY2000. Originality/value: The paper highlights a novel contribution through its nuanced analysis of sector-specific Zakat on macrolevel data and its implications within the fiscal framework. The results suggest that Zakat has substantial potential to impact fiscal dynamics, providing valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to recognize the national-level Zakat for development plans such as the five-year plan. The study suggests piloting a central and independent national body to study the feasibility of national-level Zakat collection and its utilization in the fiscal budget. It will help the government reduce the burden of external debt and deficit budget and, instead, will promote revenue collection in collaboration with the National Board of Revenue. To respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, countries introduced public health and social measures that had indirect societal, economic consequences. Concerns during epidemics include continuity of routine health services. We investigate how healthcare utilisation and healthcare seeking behaviour changed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic among host communities in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. This mixed-methods study combines quantitative analyses of routine health data and population-based findings about healthcare seeking behaviours. Trends in consultations changed according to facility level (higher-level facilities included Upazila Health Complexes and District Hospitals; lower-level facilities included Community Clinics and Union Health and Family Welfare Centers). At the pandemic’s beginning, drops were seen at higher-level health facilities for outpatient department (OPD) consultations, respiratory infections, and antenatal care. Minor reductions or increases were seen at lower-level facilities for the same services. Half of the subdistricts reported a cumulative increase in OPD and respiratory tract infection consultations. Most subdistricts reported a cumulative decrease in antenatal care. Child vaccinations dropped in all subdistricts, half of which did not catch-up, resulting in a cumulative decrease of delivered doses. Fear of contracting COVID-19 and financial constraints were the main reasons for decreased access. Drivers of healthcare seeking behaviours should be better understood to guide preparedness and service delivery modalities at primary and secondary levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Karnaphuli and Halda rivers play a significant role in the ecological and commercial arena of Bangladesh, but no detailed study on radioactivity in these two rivers sediments is reported elsewhere. The present study measures the concentrations of terrestrial radionuclides in the sediment samples collected from these two rivers by using high-purity germanium (HPGe) γ-ray spectrometry. The concentrations (Bqkg−1) of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K show in the range of 17.63 ± 1.47–38.90 ± 2.50, 27.86 ± 1.76–48.80 ± 2.70 and 324.28 ± 26.83–640.70 ± 42.70, respectively, which is similar to the literature data and world mean value except for four sampling locations (Kalamiabazar, Natun bridge, Rajakhali and Chaktai khal) that shows higher concentrations of primordial radionuclides. These four sampling points are located adjacent to the industrial wastes discharge channels into the Karnaphuli river. In fact, among the thousands of industries located on the bank of the Karnaphuli river, about 200 units were identified as the sources of environmental pollution. To assess human health hazards due to natural radiation, several indicators such as radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex) and outdoor annual effective dose equivalent were calculated and compared with the recommended limits. The present results serve as an input to prepare the baseline radioactivity in commercially important river sediments prior to the operation of the first nuclear power plant in the country. Photovoltaic-based power generation is increasing in Bangladesh. With the high level of availability and being cost-effective in contrast with off-gird plants, grid-connected solar photovoltaic plants are growing popularity. The present research analyses the techno-economic and environmental feasibility of a 3 MW grid-connected PV plant in Ishwardi of Pabna district, Bangladesh, where 2 cases have been considered as 50% and 80% loan financing. With 50% loan financing, the NPV, IRR and PBP were found to be USD 1,849,450, 14% and 7.03 years, respectively. The cost of electricity by on-grid solar system was found to be USD 0.06285/kWh in case of 50% loan financing. In the case of 80% loan financing showed the NPV, IRR and PBP results to be USD 1,098,086, 10% and 10.37 years, respectively. In the 20 years of life cycle, the PV plant can generate about 83,933 MWh electricity that can reduce about 54,791 tons of CO2, 573.3 tons of SO2, 144.7 tons of NOx and 28.6 tons of CO generations compared to the current generation mix in Bangladesh. This paper offers: (1) a multidimensional Employability Skill Scale development method; and (2) one 30-item, seven-dimensional, and another 26-item six-dimensional employability skill requirement scale for use with entry-level human resources management positions, as perceived by employers and students, respectively, in Bangladesh. The study is based on samples of 174 and 446 survey responses collected from corporate managers and university students, respectively. There were significant variations in opinions between employers and students on employability skill requirements in entry-level human resources management positions. Employers prioritized skills such as subject knowledge, applying knowledge, listening effectively, breadth of knowledge, working safely, and self-management. On the other hand, students preferred skills such as team leading ability, complex problem-solving ability, judgment ability, proactivity, negotiation ability, strength of reference, type of university, and image of the university.

The Sundarbans Mangrove Forest (SMF) is the world's largest tidal halophytic mangrove forest block. This forest and the livelihoods it depends on are extremely susceptible to anticipated climate change. The lives and vulnerabilities of small-scale fisheries are still poorly known despite the Sundarbans being frequently used as a test case by scientists to examine climate variability and change. Based on research on six fishing villages in the Sundarbans, this study analyzed the environmental and livelihood risks of smallscale fisheries and how they responded to climate change-related events. A range of qualitative techniques, such as focus groups, oral histories, and interviews, were used to gather empirical data. The study found that environmental changes have a significant impact on how well-off the Sundarbans community is, having an impact on things, including housing, income, savings, literacy, health, agriculture, and daily living. The most at risk from these negative effects are residents of nearby areas. The study's conclusions, which were based on the perspectives of the fishers, are important for the co-management of mangroves, biodiversity preservation, planning, and the improvement of livelihoods. In Bangladesh, fighting with the delta sub variety of SARS-CoV-2 was most difficult than its previous and following waves. The aim of this study is to shed light upon different risk factors of COVID-19 and their influences across age-groups inpatients in North- Eastern Districts. Methods: In this case control study, we included 75 positive and 24 negative patients admitted to Jalalabad Ragib Rabeya Medical College and Hospital, Sylhet, Bangladesh from 1st August to 30th September 2021. Different demographic, clinical and radiographic data were collected, analyzed, and compared between/among patients to assess diseases severity. Results: On average patients with COVID-19 were more likely to display remarkably 4, 1.3, and 1.5 times higher serum D-dimer, C-reactive protein, and ferritin level compared to non-COVID- 19 people. Higher number of elderly inpatients from the age of 40; specially 60 years and older accounted for the abnormal rise of the aforesaid biochemical risk factors. This age range was also concerning for intensive care unit admission and multiple biomarker elevation. Nevertheless, the percentage of hospitalized COVID-19 patients with hypertension and diabetes is calculated 45% and 30.3%. Alarmingly, 96% of our patients showed COVID-19 assisted lung abnormalities diagnosed by computerized tomography scan and hither the order for degree of damage was bilateral consolidation>ground-glass opacity>pulmonary lesion>chronic obstructive pulmonary disease> cardiomegaly. Conclusions: Age is the principle demographic risk factor of COVID-19, and it has positive correlation with different hospital outcomes, biochemical risk factors, abnormal radiographic manifestations and comorbidities. Sixteen isolates of Fusarium fujikuroi from bakanae disease of rice in Bangladesh were examined for the presence of both mating types. Seven isolates were identified as MAT-1 and nine as MAT-2. This study suggests that there may be a chance for sexual reproduction in Bangladesh because it is the first attempt to examine the mating type of F. fujikuroi in this country. Background: The next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology facilitates in-depth study of host-pathogen metatranscriptome. We, therefore, implicated phylodynamic and transcriptomic approaches through NGS technology to know/understand the dengue virus (DENV) origin and host response with dengue fever. Methods: In this study, blood serum RNA was extracted from 21 dengue patients and 3 healthy individuals. Total transcriptomic data were analyzed for phylogenetic, phylodynamic, differential express gene (DEG), and gene ontology (GO) using respective bioinformatics tools. Results: The viral genome sequence revealed dengue viral genome size ranges 10647 to 10707 nucleotide. Phylogenetic and phylodynamic analysis showed that the 2021 epidemic isolates were DENV-3 genotype-I and maintained as a new clade in compared to 2019 epidemic. Transcriptome analysis showed a total of 2686 genes were DEG in dengue patients compared to control with a q-value < 0.05. DESeq2 plot counts function of the top 24 genes with the smallest q-values of differential gene expression of RNA-seq data showed that 11 genes were upregulated, whereas 13 genes were downregulated. GO analysis showed a significant upregulation (p = < 0.001) in a process of multicellular organismal, nervous system, sensory perception of chemical stimulus, and G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathways in the dengue patients. However, there were a significant downregulation (p = < 0.001) of intracellular component, cellular anatomical entity, and protein-containing complex in dengue patients. Most importantly, there was a significant increase of a class of immunoregulatory proteins in dengue patients in compared to the controls, with increased GO of immune system process. In addition, upregulation of toll receptor (TLR) signaling pathways were found in dengue patients. These TLR pathways were particularly involved for the activation of innate system coupled with adaptive immune system that probably involved the rapid elimination of dengue virus infected cells. These differentially expressed genes could be further investigated for target based prophylactic interventions for dengue. Conclusion: This is a first report describing DENV complete genomic features and differentially expressed genes in patients in Bangladesh. These genes may have diagnostic and therapeutic values for dengue infection. The southeastern coastline of Bangladesh where the longest natural sea beach Cox's Bazar is located has experienced more pronounced changes due to human intervention compared to the changes due to storms, cyclones and flooding. Over the past 30 years, nature-dependent livelihood and economic activities have generated employment, income and shelter to people but has also enhanced exposure level and consequent vulnerability and risks to fast growing economic activities and human settlements to projected climate-induced natural disasters. Satellite imageries clearly show the changing land-use pattern due to human intervention. On the ground, questionnaire-based, face-to-face interview method has helped in understanding the key drivers behind the changing economic activities, occupation category-wise exposure and vulnerability of the people along the coast. Fishing, salt-shrimp practice, fish drying, agriculture, tourism, and related small trading business are now the main economic activities, and human settlement expansion has changed the coastal ecosystem. The vulnerability assessment suggests that the fast emergence of salt-shrimp farm-based employment and livelihood is one of the most sensitive to natural threats. This study attempted to investigate some socio-economic parameters concerning the development of entrepreneurship of the banks' members. For this purpose, researchers chose Grameen Bank (GB) of Bangladesh, which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. On the basis of proportionate stratified sampling, respondents were selected from different branches (2200) of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. The total sample of the study included 750 respondents. A constructed questionnaire was used to collect data, and SPSS and Decision Analyst Stats 2.0 software packs were used for analyzing data. Different statistical tools (T-test, Correlation Coefficient, and ANOVA) were also used to analyze data. The results of the study show that the level of new small business initiatives by the Banks' customers has increased significantly. The results also show that the new business opening rate was high at the beginning of the membership. Therefore, the data reveal that the contribution of the Grameen Bank in providing funding to small and medium enterprises. Empirical evidence suggests that socio-economic conditions have significantly persuaded customers to become entrepreneurs by the bank's loan and credit program. The outcomes of the present study will be helpful for GB authority, policy makers, and customers to make appropriate decisions and make friendly policies about entrepreneurial development and enterprise proliferation. Introduction: Assessment of the symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress and feeling of wellbeing among healthcare workers are essential to take necessary steps to treat or prevent any psychiatric morbidity. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the psychiatric morbidity among the healthcare workers of a tertiary level hospital in Bangladesh. Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted in Combined Military Hospital, Bogura, Bangladesh from July 2021 to December 2021. For this purpose, 50 health workers fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria were taken as sample. They filled up personal & sociodemographic data and the short-form Bangla version of WHO-5, GAD-7, PHQ-9andPSS-5 scale [1,2,3,4,18]. The results showed that the mean age of the health workers was average 25 years with male predominance (58%). Symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress and wellbeing were found among 20%, 30%, 96% and 96% of health workers respectively. This excess stress and low feeling of wellbeing may be related to extra stressors caused by dread, fear and exceptional longevity of the disease itself and sudden socioeconomic drift down compounded by Covid-19 pandemic effects. Combination of depression, anxiety and stress in different patterns were also higher in them. Conclusions: Incidence of psychiatric illness was high among health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: Purchasing drugs with or without prescription from retail drug shops is common practice in Bangladesh. However, what actually takes place between the drug seller and customer during the transaction is under-researched. This study explores the drug purchasing practices which underlie the socio-cultural and economic aspects of a Bangladeshi city. Methods: Adopting ethnographic methods, we conducted thirty in-depth interviews (IDIs) with customers, patients, and sales assistants, and ten key informant interviews (KIIs) with drug sellers, experienced sales assistants and pharmaceutical company representatives. Thirty hours were spent observing drug sellers' and buyers' conversations and interactions for medicine. A total of 40 heterogeneous participants were purposively selected from three drug stores. Transcribed data were coded, and analyzed thematically. Results: We found through thematic analysis that some individuals visited the drug store with fixed ideas about the name, brand, and dose of the drugs they wanted. Among the 30 IDIs participants, most individuals come without any preconceived ideas, describe their symptoms, and negotiate purchases with the expectation of quick remedies. Cultural practices of buying medicines in full or partial course of doses, with or without prescription, trust in sellers, and positive previous experiences of medications shape the drug purchasing behavior, regardless of any preconceived ideas concerning brand name, and dose. Few customers (n = 7) sought drugs by trade name, but most drug sellers often offered a generic substitute because selling non-brand drugs is more profitable. Notably, many of the clients (n = 13) bought drugs through installment payments and with loans. Conclusion: Community people choose and purchase the most necessary medicines in a self-medicated way from shortly trained drug sellers that can harm individuals' health and reduce the effectiveness of medication. In addition, the results of buying medicine through installments and loans suggest further research on the financial burden of consumers' purchasing behavior. Policymakers, regulators, and healthcare professionals might implicate the study findings to deliver practical information on the rational use of medicines to sellers and customers. Bangladesh is a middle-income country. With the development of the industrial and agricultural sectors, the demand for petroleum-based fuels in the transport sector has been steadily growing. Diesel, petrol, octane (C8H18), liquid petroleum gas (LPG), and compressed natural gas are mainly used as fuels in the transportation sectors of Bangladesh. The government imports LPG as well as refined, crude, and furnace oil from abroad to meet the country's growing energy demand. Apart from that, Bangladesh has a shortage of natural gas reserves, which is a great concern. As a result, it is essential to find and use renewable fuel sources. Since Bangladesh is an agricultural country, bioethanol could be the best alternative fuel generated from agricultural residues and waste. Every year, a large amount of agricultural residue is generated in this country, from which a vast amount of bioethanol could be produced. Bioethanol derived from agricultural residue and waste can reduce dependency on fossil resources, reduce fossil fuel's environmental impact, and improve engine performance. This article comprehensively reviews the bioethanol production potential from agricultural residues and investigates the opportunities and possibilities in Bangladesh. The research outcomes reveal that in the fiscal year 2019–2020, approximately 46.5 million tons of agricultural residue were generated from the available major crops, from which about 19.325 GL (gigalitres) of bioethanol could be generated. This current study also investigates the practical methods of bioethanol production from different agricultural feedstocks and identifies the challenges related to bioethanol production in Bangladesh. The textile sector of Bangladesh has positively contributed to a significant impact on its national economy and employment opportunities due to its rapid growth. The increasing number of wet processing units has led to a growing amount of wastewater volume as well as textile sludge (a byproduct of wastewater or effluent treatment plants). In 2015, the government of Bangladesh instituted the "Bangladesh Standards and Guidelines for Sludge Management". Therefore, this case study aimed to assess these standards' impact on the textile industry's sludge management practices, informing academic scholars of the research opportunities available, and serving as a policymaking tool for various other South Asia and Southeast Asia economies. The sludge management situation of thirty-six industries (namely, twelve dyeing, twelve printing, and twelve washing) was herein assessed through a self-administered questionnaire survey of respondents from the respective 'Top Management' and 'Environmental Chemical Responsible' (ECR) departments. Among the findings, the assessment revealed that neither treatment procedures nor reuse and recycling activities are present for sludge management in any of the studied industries. The responsible personnel from the textile industries have not undergone any level of technical training, and 41.7% of the printing industries still dump sludge in the open environment. The majority (83%) of stakeholders are unaware of the dangers and potential effects of improper sludge treatment. The key factors—responsibility, knowledge, behavior, and consideration—analyzed in this study, together with the study's recommendations, will be a vital step forward in formulating policy advocacy for hazardous sludge management within the textile sector of Bangladesh. Thalassemia is one of the most common autosomal recessive hereditary blood disorders worldwide, especially in developing countries, including Bangladesh. Thus, this study aimed to determine HRQoL and its determinants of thalassemia patients (TP) in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional survey was performed on 356 randomly selected thalassemia patients. Participants were invited to face-to-face interviews. Descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages), independent t-test, ANOVA, and multivariate (linear and logistic regression) analysis was performed to analyze the data. Our demographic data showed that among 356 patients, 54% and 46% were male and female, respectively, with an average age of 19.75 (SD = 8.02) years. Most were transfusion-dependent (91%), 26% had comorbidities, and 52% were from low-income families. In the case of HRQoL, male patients showed significantly higher scores of bodily pains and physical health summaries than female patients. Lower income, high blood transfusion status, disease severity, comorbidities, and medical expenses (p < 0.05; CI 95%) are significantly associated with lower SF-36 scores. This study found an association between lower income, blood transfusion, disease severity, comorbidities, as well as medical expenses, and the deterioration of HRQoL among TP. Male patients experienced poorer HRQoL than females. National action plans are required to guarantee the holistic welfare of thalassemia patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Globally, rivers are continuously being polluted because of anthropogenic discharge, especially in Asian countries experiencing rapid urban, industrial and agricultural developments. Exceedingly high concentrations of nutrients and toxic metals have been detected in most Asian rivers, which has led to major environmental and human health concerns that demand the detoxification of polluted river water. This study investigated and compared the efficacy of microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris) and cyanobacteria (Anabaena variabilis) as a low-cost and eco-friendly approach to remediate polluted river water. The results revealed that both microalgae and cyanobacteria have the potential to reduce the pollutant load from the raw river water, but the removal efficiency is species dependent. The studied microalgal and cyanobacterial species are excellent candidates for polluted water and/or wastewater treatment as well as producers of energy-rich biomass that can be further processed to produce biofuel, biodiesel, and other bio-hydrocarbons. This study investigated the phycoremediation abilities of Chlorella vulgaris (microalga) and Anabaena variabilis (cyanobacterium) for the detoxification of polluted river water. Lab-scale phycoremediation experiments were conducted for 20 days at 30 °C using the microalgal and cyanobacterial strains and water samples collected from the Dhaleswari river in Bangladesh. The physicochemical properties such as electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), hardness ions, and heavy metals of the collected water samples indicated that the river water is highly polluted. The results of the phycoremediation experiments demonstrated that both microalgal and cyanobacterial species significantly reduced the pollutant load and heavy metal concentrations of the river water. The pH of the river water was significantly raised from 6.97 to 8.07 and 8.28 by C. vulgaris and A. variabilis, respectively. A. variabilis demonstrated higher efficacy than C. vulgaris in reducing the EC, TDS, and BOD of the polluted river water and was more effective at reducing the pollutant load of SO42− and Zn. In regard to hardness ions and heavy metal detoxification, C. vulgaris performed better at removing Ca2+, Mg2+, Cr, and Mn. These findings indicate that both microalgae and cyanobacteria have great potential to remove various pollutants, especially heavy metals, from the polluted river water as part of a low-cost, easily controllable, environmentally friendly remediation strategy. Nevertheless, the composition of polluted water should be assessed prior to the designing of microalgae- or cyanobacteria-based remediation technology, since the pollutant removal efficiency is found to be species dependent. Forests are atmospheric CO2 sinks, but their losses and degradation accelerate the emissions of carbon stored as a sink. Deforestation and forest degradation are widespread in Bangladesh, but their impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is unknown. We assess land use and land cover (LULC) change and forest loss in this study by classifying different Landsat satellite imagery with a focus on forest cover loss from 1989 to 2020. Tier 1 standards were used to estimate the carbon removal and emissions from a small-scale tropical forest. Over the last three decades, the forest area has decreased by 2.40%, 3.74% and 7.52%, respectively. The primary causes of forest loss are large-scale tea garden and homestead expansion, as well as increase in agricultural activities. Because of a reduction in the forest area, the annual gain of carbon in forest biomass has also decreased. Although overall carbon emission was a net gain for the Maulvibazar hill forest, it has decreased from 331.24 Gg·yr-1 in the first decade (1989 to 2000) to 307.7 Gg·yr-1 in the most recent decade (2011 to 2020), which is an alarming trend. As a result, this research will contribute to leaders' commitment to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030' at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26) in 2021 to improve carbon sequestration, combat climate change and conserve biodiversity. Urban green spaces provide environmental ameliorates by reducing air pollution, mitigating urban heat island effects, and cooling urban areas. The present study aimed to assess the urban green spaces along with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and land surface temperature of 41 wards of Chittagong City Corporation in Bangladesh between 2000 and 2020. The study revealed a dramatic increase in the urban green coverage in the Chittagong City Corporation areas during 20 years of time-lapse. The total urban green space increased by 58.09%, from 4488.85 ha in 2000 to 7096.42 ha in 2020. Thus, per-capita green coverage increased from 0.003 ha to 0.004 ha. The time series analysis shows that the annual mean value of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index increased to 0.46 in 2020 from 0.44 in 2000, which indicates a rise in green areas in the Chittagong City Corporation. The time series analysis also shows a gradual increase in the annual mean temperature from 2000 through 2020. During this time frame, the annual mean temperature in 2000 was 29.46°C, while it was 30.41°C in 2020. The study findings will help urban planners build this city sustainably, considering the concept of a healthy and eco-friendly city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In research settings in the Eastern Gangetic Plain, Conservation Agriculture (CA) reduces operational costs, including cost for machinery, labour and fuel, while increasing yields, profit and soil organic carbon. However, the impact of the CA practices when adopted by smallholder farms on their crop productivity and farm profitability in this region is not well understood. In three locations in Rajshahi and Thakurgaon districts, Bangladesh, where previous on-farm CA research and demonstrations had been focused, we assessed the adoption and impacts of CA technologies on 135 farms compared to 270 non-adopters. While the CA technology adoption is still ongoing in the study areas, those farmers who practiced CA technology decreased human labour by up to 34%, seed use by 31%, fertilisers by 6%, pesticides by 32%, and total cost of production up to 10% while cultivating lentil, mustard, maize and wheat. The respective increases in crop yield and net profit were up to 28% and 43%, respectively. Propensity score matching (PSM) methods further confirmed that CA technology adoption had significant impacts by increasing crop yield, reducing variable costs, and increasing adopters' net income. Given the striking on-farm benefits of CA for smallholders in the EGP, programmes to expand the availability of minimum tillage planters, provide training to local service providers on CA methods, and the use of smart incentives should be evaluated to assist farmers to adopt CA seeding machinery and associated agronomic practices. Background and aims: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health concern worldwide and has been recognized as a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The elevated level of uric acid (hyperuricemia) has been suggested to be associated with obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. However, there is limited information on the relationship between hyperuricemia and CKD. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of CKD and assess its relationship with hyperuricemia in Bangladeshi adults. Methods: In this study, blood samples were collected from 545 participants (398 males and 147 females) aged ≥ 18 years. Biochemical parameters such as serum uric acid (SUA), lipid profile markers, glucose, creatinine and urea were measured by colorimetric methods. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and CKD were determined based on serum creatinine levels with existed formula. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between SUA and CKD. Results: The overall prevalence of CKD was 5.9% with 6.1% in males and 5.2% in females. Hyperuricemia was prevalent in 18.7% of participants with 23.2% in males and 14.6% in females. An increasing trend of CKD prevalence was observed with increasing age in the groups. The mean eGFR level was significantly lower in male (95.1 ± 31.8 ml/min/1.73m2) than in female (109.3 ± 77.4 ml/min/1.73m2) subjects (p < 0.01). The mean level of SUA was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in participants having CKD (7.1 ± 1.9 mg/dL) than in participants without CKD (5.7 ± 1.6 mg/dL). A decreasing trend for eGFR concentration and an increasing trend for CKD prevalence was observed across the SUA quartiles (p < 0.001). In regression analysis, a significant positive association was found between hyperuricemia and CKD. Conclusion: This study showed an independent association between hyperuricemia and CKD in Bangladeshi adults. Empirical data from in-depth interviews with Bangladeshis in London and Sylhet reveal different experiences, imaginaries and mobilities connected to ageing. In contrast to the now-standard 'Western' model of active and successful ageing, in Sylhet and amongst Bangladeshi-origin migrants in London, successful ageing is less about physical activity and independence and more about being socially active and respected, and being taken care of by family members. However, British-Bangladeshis' experiences of ageing and mobility are gendered, with older men going to the mosque for social interaction, and some making solo trips to the desh or homeland, whilst most older women are spatially less mobile. Men view the experience of ageing in Bangladesh as more convivial, for climatic, economic and social reasons, but healthcare there is very poor. For older British-Bangladeshi women, there is less desire to visit the homeland; even less to return there to settle. Most older first-generation British-Bangladeshis are content to age-in-place in London, although a minority of men go for extended stays in Sylhet. For the younger first-generation migrants in London whose parents are still alive in Bangladesh, managing transnational familyhood and care are a major challenge, given the costs and other barriers to travel. Background We evaluated the impact of low-cost water, sanitation, and handwashing (WSH) and child nutrition interventions on enteropathogen carriage in the WASH Benefits cluster-randomized controlled trial in rural Bangladesh. Methods We analyzed 1411 routine fecal samples from children 14 ± 2 months old in the WSH (n = 369), nutrition counseling plus lipid-based nutrient supplement (n = 353), nutrition plus WSH (n = 360), and control (n = 329) arms for 34 enteropathogens using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Outcomes included the number of co-occurring pathogens; cumulative quantity of 4 stunting-associated pathogens; and prevalence and quantity of individual pathogens. Masked analysis was by intention-to-treat. Results Three hundred twenty-six (99.1%) control children had 1 or more enteropathogens detected (mean, 3.8 ± 1.8). Children receiving WSH interventions had lower prevalence and quantity of individual viruses than controls (prevalence difference for norovirus: –11% [95% confidence interval {CI}, –5% to –17%]; sapovirus: –9% [95% CI, –3% to –15%]; and adenovirus 40/41: –9% [95% CI, –2% to –15%]). There was no difference in bacteria, parasites, or cumulative quantity of stunting-associated pathogens between controls and any intervention arm. Conclusions WSH interventions were associated with fewer enteric viruses in children aged 14 months. There is increasing evidence of the post-COVID-19 suffering and decreased quality of life in the COVID-19 patients. This study aimed to assess the quality of life and associated factors of COVID-19 patients at one month after discharge from the hospital. This was a cross-sectional study that was conducted at the post-covid clinic of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where RT–PCR-confirmed adult COVID-19 recovered patients were enrolled one month after discharge from the same hospital. They were consecutively selected from January 01 to May 30. A pretested semi-structured questionnaire was used for the data collection for clinical variables. The generic multi-attributable utility instrument EQ-5D-5L was used for assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL). A total of 563 patients were enrolled in the study. The patients had a mean age with standard deviation (±SD) of 51.18 (±13.49) years and 55.95% were male. The mean (SD) EQ-5D-5L index score and EQ-VAS scores were 0.78 (±0.19) and 70.26 (±11.13), respectively. Overall, 45.77%, 50.99%, 52.79%, 55.14% and 62.16% had problems (slight to extreme) in the mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression dimensions, respectively. Patients aged ≥60 years had significant problem in mobility (odds ratio [OR] 3.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07–9.77). Female participants were 5.50 times (95% CI: 2.22–13.62) more likely to have problems in their usual activities. In comparison to urban area, living in a peri-urban setting was significantly associated with problems in mobility (OR 1.89, 95% CI: 1.13–3.20), pain/discomfort (OR 1.82, 95% CI: 1.04–3.12) and anxiety/depression (OR 2.16, 95% CI: 1.22–3.84). Comorbid patients were 1.75 times (95% CI: 1.07–2.85) more likely to report problems in the pain/discomfort dimension. Presence of symptom(s) was associated with problems in self-care (OR 3.27, 95%CI: 1.31–8.18), usual-activity (OR 3.08, 95%CI: 1.21–7.87), pain/discomfort dimensions (OR 2.75, 95%CI: 1.09–6.96) and anxiety/depression (OR 3.35, 95%CI: 1.35–8.30). Productivity gap in this study is the difference between the productivity of BADC Boro seed and non-BADC Boro seed at the farm level. Again, the economic competitiveness of hybrid Boro seed produced by Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) is measured through Domestic Resource Cost (DRC). Therefore, the study was examined the productivity gap and the comparative advantage of producing BADC hybrid Boro seed. Primary data were collected from 240 adopters and 240 non-adopters of BADC Boro seed from eight districts of Bangladesh. The average productivity of adopters and non-adopters of BADC Boro seed was 5274 and 4885 kg ha-1, respectively. The average productivity gap between adopters and non-adopters was positive (389 kg ha-1). The average productivity of adopters was 1.08 times higher than that of nonadopters. The study pointed out that 9.51% productivity gap was identified due to the difference in observable characteristics and 90.49% gap to the difference in the yields of such characteristics. The DRC of hybrid Boro seed was 0.87 which is implying that BADC has a comparative advantage in producing hybrid Boro seed. The study revealed that an adequate supply of BADC Boro seed to the farmers will enhance Boro rice productivity in Bangladesh. Background Bubble continuous positive airway pressure (bCPAP) oxygen therapy has been shown to be safe and effective in treating children with severe pneumonia and hypoxaemia in Bangladesh. Due to lack of adequate non-invasive ventilatory support during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis, we aimed to evaluate whether bCPAP was safe and feasible when adapted for use in adults with similar indications. Methods Adults (18-64 years) with severe pneumonia and moderate hypoxaemia (80 to <90% oxygen saturation (SpO2) in room air) were provided bCPAP via nasal cannula at a flow rate of 10 litres per minute (l/min) oxygen at 10 centimetres (cm) H2O pressure, in two tertiary hospitals in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Qualitative interviews and focus group discussions, using a descriptive phenomenological approach, were performed with patients and staff (n = 39) prior to and after the introduction (n = 12 and n = 27 respectively) to understand the operational challenges to the introduction of bCPAP. Results We enrolled 30 adults (median age 52, interquartile range (IQR) 40-60 years) with severe pneumonia and hypoxaemia and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) irrespective of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) test results to receive bCPAP. At baseline mean SpO2 on room air was 87% (±2) which increased to 98% (±2), after initiation of bCPAP. The mean duration of bCPAP oxygen therapy was 14.4 ± 24.8 hours. There were no adverse events of note, and no treatment failure or deaths. Operational challenges to the clinical introduction of bCPAP were lack of functioning pulse oximeters, difficult nasal interface fixation among those wearing nose pin, occasional auto bubbling or lack of bubbling in water-filled plastic bottle, lack of holder for water-filled plastic bottle, rapid turnover of trained clinicians at the hospitals, and limited routine care of patients by hospital clinicians particularly after official hours. Discussion If the tertiary hospitals in Bangladesh are supplied with well-functioning good quality pulse oximeters and enhanced training of the doctors and nurses on proper use of adapted version of bCPAP, in treating adults with severe pneumonia and hypoxaemia with or without ARDS, the bCPAP was found to be safe, well tolerated and not associated with treatment failure across all study participants. These observations increase the confidence level of the investigators to consider a future efficacy trial of adaptive bCPAP oxygen therapy compared to WHO standard low flow oxygen therapy in such patients. Conclusions Although bCPAP oxygen therapy was found to be safe and feasible in this pilot study, several challenges were identified that need to be taken into account when planning a definitive clinical trial. The main goal of sustainable development is to engage the public in setting the groundwork for developing profiles based on carrying capacity assessments. Since industrial projects are located in traditional, non-industrial zones, the broad human resource development program includes environmental research, education, and training to build technical and practical skills in the country-based and scientific statistics system data gathering. It is noteworthy that the examinations were conducted sporadically and that the research did not correspond to the pollution level in Bangladesh's waterways. Therefore, it is essential to conduct a methodical examination that may offer a complete picture of river pollution so that appropriate preventative actions can be adopted to safeguard against pollution threats. Bangladesh has many environmental issues, including dirty air from various vehicles, unhealthy water, accumulating urban waste, untreated sewage, interior air pollution from wood smoke, and usage of fad-driven contemporary materials in homes. Each of them contributes more to the destruction of the environment. With the current trend of population growth followed by the construction of companies to suit their wants, such a situation may worsen. Hazardous gases, dust particles, or liquid effluents are the waste products emitted from industrial sources. These discharges are full of harmful chemicals that pollute aquatic ecosystems, disrupt the local biota, and eventually harm living things and associated flora and animals. As a result, studies were conducted, including the physicochemical characterization of sugar refineries, distilleries, and other rivers that receive such effluents. These characteristics of subsurface water were also taken into consideration throughout the inquiry. Introduction: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients and survivors face stigma, discrimination, and negligence. The motives for and the different types and consequences of COVID-19-related stigmatization remain underexplored in Bangladesh. Therefore, this study examined how the COVID-19 stigmatization process is interlinked with transmission flow. Methods: Using a qualitative research design, we conducted 20 in-depth interviews with infected and suspected caregivers and five key informant interviews with physicians, local media representatives, leaders, law enforcement officials, and local administrative officials in three divisional cities of Bangladesh. We performed thematic analysis to analyze the data. Results: Participants expressed their experiences with multiple subthemes within three themes (stigma related to symptoms, stigma associated with isolation and quarantine, and stigma associated with health services). Participants reportedly faced stigma, for example, exclusion, hesitation to interact, avoidance, bullying, threat, and negligence caused by misinformation, rumors, and fear. Stigmatized individuals reportedly hid their symptoms and refrained from seeking healthcare services, contributing to COVID-19 transmission flow. Conclusion: Revealed insights may contribute to effective prevention, control, and management of such an emerging pandemic. Background: The spice crop chili is cultivated all over Bangladesh but the yield is very low due to the infestation of insect and mite pests. This study investigated the efficacy of some botanical and synthetic chemicals for management of mite, whitefly and thrips attacking chili plants. Methods: The chili variety BARI Morich 2 was cultivated in Gazipur, Bangladesh and the chemicals, namely Neem oil @ 1.5 ml/L water, Omite 57 EC @ 2.0 ml/L water, Vertimec 018 EC @ 1.25 ml/L water, Liquor 1.8 EC @ 2.0 ml/L water and Confidor 20% SL @ 1.5 ml/L water were applied on the plants to manage mite, whitefly and thrips. The efficacy of the botanical and synthetic pesticides was compared to control treatment (untreated). Result: The applied chemicals significantly reduced the abundance of mite, thrips and whiteflies, resulting in the lower level of leaf curl index of plants compared to control. All the treatments revealed a significantly higher yield and benefit-cost ratio than that of control. Omite showed the lowest abundance of mite and Confidor showed the lowest leaf curl index with a lower abundance of whiteflies and thrips. A stable and healthy insurance industry plays a vital role in sustaining an economy resistant to economic shocks by providing an efficient risk-transition mechanism. There is a relative scarcity of research inspecting the impact of insurers' financial insolvency on the profitability of insurance firms. Employing 2011–2019 panel data of 16 non-life insurance companies operating in Bangladesh, this research endeavors to examine the impacts of insurers' financial insolvency on the profitability of insurance companies measured by return ratios, return on assets (ROA), and return on equity (ROE). Fixed-effect regression outcome implies that insurers' financial insolvency has a significant adverse influence on non-life insurance companies' profitability. Further findings indicate that financial leverage, technical provision, age, and inflation have a noteworthy adverse influence on profitability. The outcomes of this research are of greater significance for policymakers in tackling insolvency and formulating policies to boost the growth of insurance profitability. Introduction: Each year, antibiotics save hundreds of thousands of lives; nonetheless, antibiotic self-administration is a major concern all over the world. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of antibiotic self-administration among two-month adult antibiotic users as well as the factors contributing to this prevalence. Method and Participants: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 295 Bangladeshi adults between May 22nd and June 15th, 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Descriptive statistics included frequency distribution, while inferential statistics included the Pearson chi-square test. For data analysis, the statistical software STATA-16 was used. Results: In this study, the prevalence of antibiotic self-administration was 17.97%. Antibiotic self-administration was found to be significantly more prevalent among those who were unable to take antibiotic on time, incomplete doses, did not know over prescriptions may cause antibiotic resistance, and could not correctly recognize amoxicillin and azithromycin are antibiotics. Conclusion: Due to the increased rate of antibiotic self-administration among adults in Bangladesh, the responsible authority should give more attention towards the factors responsible for antibiotic self-administration and revise their current policy to ensure the safe and effective use of antibiotics. Background: Since the first documentation of COVID-19, four waves have hit Bangladesh. This study provides an insight into the scenario of the country during each wave along with the regulations enforced to combat it and it will help the national policy makers to mitigate the loss during any future wave. Main body: Lockdowns were imposed in many phases but despite all these measures, people were reluctant to follow health guidelines, which worsened the situation. These extended restrictions hampered the country's economy, people's mental health, and the academic life of the students. To fight such a situation, alternative steps like stringent area-based lockdowns, imposing immediate restrictions, and ensuring compulsory quarantine for people coming from other countries can be taken. People need to be encouraged to follow health guidelines, wear masks, get vaccinated otherwise restrictions alone will not be enough to assist the country to overcome the loss during pandemic. Short conclusion: The identification of the transmitting path, as well as the conduct of contact tracing, must be constantly monitored. The use of organic fertilisers and soil amendments are almost universally recommended for improving the organic matter levels and maintaining soil health, but few studies documenting the actual availability and quality of such materials on smallholder farms are available. We selected a case study of 300 households from northern and southern Bangladesh to assess the types of waste materials available for recycling and their usage patterns at household level and we applied a novel approach to empirically identify household waste as input inefficiency in a production context. Northern districts have highly intensive farming systems whereas southern districts have low intensity farming. The total amount of agricultural waste produced at household level was estimated at 822 kg per month. Cow dung contributed about 65% of the total waste followed by animal feed refusal waste (11%), garbage (7%) and kitchen waste (6%). Most of the farmers utilised cow dung and wastes as organic fertiliser and lesser amounts as cooking fuel. Econometric analysis shows that the number of cattle and small ruminant per holding, total area of cultivated land and family size were significant factors that influence the amount of waste production at household level. Each household can reduce the chemical fertiliser cost by Tk. 1463 (US$ 17.84) per month by using compost prepared from household waste. There were ample opportunities for compost/vermicomposting and potential markets. The Department of Agricultural Extension from the public sector and private sector agents might motivate farmers to harvest the potential benefits of agricultural waste through effective management and utilisation. Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) is widely known as a nutritious fruit. They grow mostly in Brazil and some other parts of Africa and South Asian countries. Jackfruit is the national fruit of Bangladesh, and it grows copiouslyin the Northern part of the country. Jackfruit seed powder has been researched and used as a functional food in different food products. This work investigated some physicochemical properties and nutritional parameters of five types of grain flours collected from the northern region of Bangladesh. The grain flours are jackfruit seed powder, rice powder, barley powder, wheat flour powder, and maize powder. In this study, we have observed that jackfruit seed powder is highly nutritious. So, it can also be said from the study that jackfruit seed powder from Bangladesh has a high nutritional value when compared to other flours. It can be used alone or along with these flours in different food products. Therefore, in the era of ensuring sustainable development and meeting challenges of nutrition security, jackfruit seed powder can be an appropriate choice to reduce postharvest loss and produce value-added products. Overuse or underuse of nutrients relative to recommendations is a likely cause of crop yield gaps and an impediment to the achievement of food security. Government-endorsed recommendations are developed to deliver the best evidence-based advice on balanced fertilizer; however, deviations of farmers' nutrient use from the recommendations are rarely examined. This study chose the salt-affected coastal zone of the Ganges Delta, where low crop productivity and cropping intensity by smallholders limit their income, to determine current nutrient use gaps for the first time of three cropping patterns in two representative districts of Bangladesh. A total of 246 farms were surveyed from three farm sizes. Farmers' nutrient use gaps were compared with Fertilizer Recommendation Guides published in 2012 (FRG-2012) and 2018 (FRG-2018). Relative to FRG-2012 recommendations, farmers used 12%, 70%, and 11% overdoses of N, P, and K, respectively, under two fully rice-based cropping patterns, but the level of overdoses increased with farm size. Rates of K (14%), S (28%), and Zn use were below the FRG-2012 recommendations, especially for the smallest category of farms. However, the FRG-2018, increased recommended N (5%), K (62%), S (12%), and Zn rates but reduced P (25%) rates for fully rice-based cropping patterns. In contrast with rice, regardless of farm size, farmers applied overdose nutrients to watermelon but compensated with underdoses in the subsequent monsoon rice implying that farmers prioritized fertilizer expenditure on the most profitable crop. For the cropping pattern with watermelon, farmers could reduce the use of N (69%) and P (46%) and increase the use of K (48%), S (5%), and B. Reducing NPK use gaps can save treasury for both the farmers and the governments by 39.1 and 73.8 USD ha-1, respectively, under fully rice-based cropping patterns. Intensive cropping systems with diverse cropping patterns present a challenge for nutrient management on smallholder farms. Government-endorsed recommendations for crop fertilizer use are designed to assist farmers achieve profitable and balanced nutrient inputs, but it is unclear how closely farmers follow these recommendations. We identified farmers' current nutrient use gaps (overuse or underuse) relative to the Government-endorsed recommended nutrient doses in two cropping patterns in three representative Agro-ecological Zones of Bangladesh. A total of 330 farms were surveyed in 2019 from three farm size categories (referred to as large-, medium and small-scale) and their gaps in nutrient use were assessed relative to Government-endorsed Fertilizer Recommendation Guides (FRG) published in 2012 and in 2018: FRG-2012 and FRG-2018. The large- and medium-scale farms used 11–16%, 80–90% and 21–30%, respectively, over-doses of NPK in the cropping season under fully rice-based cropping pattern relative to FRG-2012 recommendations, while the over-dose levels were much lower for small-scale farms. Small-scale farms used much less than recommended S, Mg, Zn, B and organic manure (OM) rates relative to FRG-2012. The FRG-2018, which increased N and K recommendations but decreased the P recommendation for rice crops relative to FRG-2012, shows that all farms can decrease the dose of P (by 50%) while small-scale farms need to increase the dose of N (7%), K (16%), S (20%) and to apply Zn in the fully rice-based cropping pattern. On the other hand, the farms could greatly reduce NPK (19%, 86% and 44%, respectively) use while increasing S (14%), Mg, Zn, B and OM use relative to FRG-2018 in the pattern with the high-value potato crop. To increase crop profitability, enhance food security and save Government treasury in the Eastern Gangetic Plain enabling approaches are needed to effectively communicate the benefits of balanced nutrient use practices to farmers. Small-scale fisheries are affected by both local and external pressures, despite the contribution to poverty alleviation, employment, and food and nutritional security. Diverse social and ecological pressures make small-scale fishing communities trapped in persistent cycles of a particular fisheries resource dependence. Consequently, the overall sustainability of that particular species, especially biological, economic and social aspects, becomes vulnerable. This study investigates the biological, economic, and social aspects of a commercially important fish species, i.e., mud crab (Scylla sp.) and explores its link to social-ecological traps. The findings show how the social-ecological traps are forming based on mud crab resource utilization, poverty, overcapitalization and seasonality of crab availability, coupled with weak institutions and governance. Apart from ongoing environmental risks (e.g., extreme climate events), negative feedback comes from poor enforcement of rules and regulations, illegal and destructive fishing, inadequate income, social conflicts, and declining stock. In response to crises, fishers are increasingly dependent on middlemen, leading to the unfair price of their products compared to the market. To escape from the social-ecological traps, strong local institutions, alternative income opportunities, compliance of fishing laws (e.g., gear selectivity, harvest, and trade prohibition of undersize crabs), strong collaboration between management authority and local stakeholders are important toward ensuring the sustainability of the mud crab fishery in the Bangladesh Sundarbans.
