The article presents a study which evaluates the effect of climate change and the variation in temperature and the alteration of pelagic food web structure in the production of the key benthic species amphipod Monoporeia affinis. It states that the researchers conducted mesocosm experiments in which water samples from the northern Baltic Sea are used. The pelagic food web was also altered, one algae-based and one bacteria-based food web. It mentions that the change in temperature does not affect the growth of M. affinis or its food web efficiency (FWE). It concludes that the indirect effect of global warming will lead to structural changes in the pelagic food web, which will have severe effects on benthic production.
