Abstract

The article discusses the influence of the history of Southeastern Europe on the development of international law in the 19th and 20th centuries. The author focuses on the history of nationalism, ethnic relations, and ethnic conflict in the region as a factor in the development of legal doctrines such as humanitarian intervention and minority rights. Additional topics discussed include rivalries among the Great Powers in the Concert of Europe regarding the geopolitics of the region in the 19th century, population transfers and ethnic cleansing in the interwar period, and the civil wars in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
