In Australia, macadamia orchards are attacked by four main insect pest groups. Management and control of three of these key pests currently relies on broad‐spectrum insecticides whose long‐term future is questionable. Of the 23 insecticides registered for use in macadamia in Australia, 19 face issues affecting their availability and 12 are presently not approved in the EU, the USA or Canada. These international markets may refuse produce that does not adhere to their own insecticide use standards, hence Australian produce may be excluded from market access. Many of the potential replacement integrated pest management methods of pest control are generally considered less effective by the industry and have not been adopted. There are 17 insect pest groups identified by the industry, any of which have potential to become major problems if broad‐spectrum insecticide options become unavailable. Thirteen pest groups need urgent attention as they are at risk of losing current effective control methods, and no replacement solutions have yet been developed. The lag period for research and development to identify new chemical and biological control solutions means there is now an urgent need for the macadamia industry to craft a strategy for sustainable pest management for each pest. Critically, this industry strategy needs to address the vulnerabilities identified in this paper, identify potential solutions for any cases of market failure and consider funding mechanisms to address these gaps. BACKGROUND: Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a highly polyphagous crop pest that has spread over the world rapidly and invaded Australia in 2020. Globally, FAW has been reported to be resistant to several insecticides permitted in Australia. Timely resistance diagnosis is critical for integrated pest management‐based control of FAW in Australia. RESULTS: We developed a multi‐amplicon panel by next‐generation sequencing (multiamplicon‐seq) to identify known insecticide resistance mutations in Australian FAW with high throughput and low cost. The panel included nine known mutations causing insecticide resistance in FAW and four gene mutations causing insecticide resistance in several insect species, not yet reported in FAW. We sequenced 36 plates (96‐well) in one MiSeq flow cell with easy sequencing library preparation. We found that Australian FAW carried a very high proportion of the F290V mutation in the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene that causes resistance to organophosphate and carbamate insecticides. Furthermore, FAW has a GABA‐activated chloride channel mutation, A301Q in the RDL gene. The sequencing‐based platform provided evidence of a duplication in the AChE gene. Here several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the 476‐bp amplicon of the AChE gene demonstrated 100% heterozygosity across samples and some individuals carried two haplotypes with the F290V mutation. CONCLUSION: Molecular surveillance by multiamplicon‐seq will increase capacity for early detection and future resistance monitoring in highly dispersed Australian FAW. BACKGROUND: The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), is one of the most economically important crop pests worldwide. Insecticide resistance in this pest was first detected over 60 years ago, with resistance in M. persicae now spanning over 80 active ingredients. Sulfoxaflor is a relatively new insecticide that is primarily used to control sap‐feeding insects. In 2018 resistance to sulfoxaflor was discovered in field populations of M. persicae in Australia. This study aimed to determine the current distribution and phenotypic levels of sulfoxaflor resistance in Australian clones of M. persicae and to investigate how these patterns relate to clonal type. RESULTS: For the first time, we show there is low‐level resistance (8–26‐fold) distributed across Australia, with resistance being detected in aphids collected from approximately 20% of all M. persicae collected and screened. Furthermore, this study shows sulfoxaflor resistance is found in two M. persicae haplotypes, providing evidence that there have been multiple independent evolutionary events which have given rise to sulfoxaflor resistance in this species. CONCLUSION: These findings have important implications for the chemical control of M. persicae in Australia, especially when considering the broader genetic background of these aphids which are known to harbour a number of other insecticide resistance mechanisms. We recommend continuous monitoring of sulfoxaflor resistance in field populations of M. persicae (in Australia and elsewhere) and further research into the underlying genetic mechanisms conferring resistance to sulfoxaflor in both clonal haplotypes. © 2023 The Authors. Crops expressing insecticidal crystal proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), often provide an opportunity for lower resistance selection toward synthetic pesticides due to reduced spraying frequency and the subsequent significant increase of natural enemies for the control of secondary pests. We would therefore expect declines in insecticide resistance levels. We analyzed patterns of resistance to insecticides used against cotton bollworm (CBW, Helicoverpa armigera) and cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) in Australia and China in relation to landscape composition and pesticide applications. In both countries, insecticide resistance in H. armigera declined rapidly in the first 7-8 years of commercial Bt cotton farming, but the trend then reversed with resistance levels either higher or the same as before Bt cotton was commercialized. The susceptibility of A. gossypii to insecticides differs between China and Australia. In China, the relatively high resistance levels in aphids did not decline after introducing Bt cotton and in fact increased. In contrast, there was no clear trend of declining resistance levels in A. gossypii after the adoption of Bt cotton in established cotton growing areas in Australia. We conclude that the resistance in H. armigera was influenced by sprays in crops other than cotton in diverse cropping landscapes; in A. gossypii, resistance was driven by the insecticide use patterns within traditional cotton growing regions. Our study implies that the principals of rational landscape level resistance management for both target and secondary pests should be adopted when commercializing Bt cotton, to better account for the compatibility of Bt crops with IPM outside and within cotton industries. BACKGROUND: Bemisia tabaci is a globally significant agricultural pest including in Australia, where it exhibits resistance to numerous insecticides. With a recent label change, buprofezin (group 16), is now used for whitefly management in Australia. This study investigated resistance to pyriproxyfen (group 7C), spirotetramat (group 23) and buprofezin using bioassays and available molecular markers. RESULTS: Bioassay and selection testing of B. tabaci populations detected resistance to pyriproxyfen with resistance ratios ranging from 4.1 to 56. Resistance to spirotetramat was detected using bioassay, selection testing and sequencing techniques. In populations collected from cotton, the A2083V mutation was detected in three populations of 85 tested, at frequencies ≤4.1%, whereas in limited surveillance of populations from an intensive horticultural region the frequency was ≥75.8%. The baseline susceptibility of B. tabaci to buprofezin was determined from populations tested from 2019 to 2020, in which LC50 values ranged from 0.61 to 10.75 mg L−1. From the bioassay data, a discriminating dose of 200 mg L−1 was developed. Recent surveillance of 16 populations detected no evidence of resistance with 100% mortality recorded at doses ≤32 mg L−1. A cross‐resistance study found no conclusive evidence of resistance to buprofezin in populations with high resistance to pyriproxyfen or spirotetramat. CONCLUSIONS: In Australian cotton, B. tabaci pest management is challenged by ongoing resistance to pyriproxyfen, while resistance to spirotetramat is an emerging issue. Simple Summary: The tomato potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli, is an important insect pest of potato, tomato, and other solanaceous crops. B. cockerelli was first detected on mainland Australia in Perth, Western Australia, in early 2017, which poses a major threat to Australian vegetable industries. It damages directly by feeding and indirectly as a vector of Candidatus Liberibacter solanaceaerum (CLso) that causes zebra chip disease in potatoes. Thus far, B. cockerelli has not been reported in other states of Australia. As B. cockerelli has been reported resistant to insecticides in USA and Mexico, biological control with native natural enemies may provide a viable alternative strategy to manage the insect. In this review, we begin with an overview of information on B. cockerelli, its incursion into Australia, and its impact on crops and current management. Opportunities to develop biological control strategies to alleviate the dependence on synthetic insecticides are also considered in this review. Moreover, the potential of existing natural enemies to contribute toward regulating populations of B. cockerelli in the field and the challenges ahead to strengthen the key role they can play through conservation biological control are also discussed. Incursion and establishment of an exotic pest may threaten natural habitats and disrupt ecosystems. On the other hand, resident natural enemies may play an important role in invasive pest control. Bactericera cockerelli, commonly known as the tomato-potato psyllid, is an exotic pest, first detected on mainland Australia in Perth, Western Australia, in early 2017. B. cockerelli causes direct damage to crops by feeding and indirectly by acting as the vector of the pathogen that causes zebra chip disease in potatoes, although the latter is not present in mainland Australia. BACKGROUND: Chemicals are widely used to protect field crops against aphid pests and aphid‐borne viral diseases. One such species is Myzus persicae (Sulzer), a global pest that attacks a broad array of agricultural crops and transmits many economically damaging plant viruses. This species has evolved resistance to a large number of insecticide compounds as a result of widespread and repeated chemical use in many parts of the world. In this study, we investigated the evolution of resistance to a new plant protection product, spirotetramat, following reported chemical control failures. RESULTS: Our study provides clear phenotypic and genotypic evidence of spirotetramat resistance in populations of M. persicae from Australia. We show there is cross‐resistance to other insecticides within the same chemical group, namely spiromesifen and spirodiclofen. We also demonstrate that resistance is associated with the previously reported mutation, A2226V in the target site of spirotetramat, acetyl‐CoA carboxylase. Our genetic analysis found all resistant M. persicae populations belong to the same multi‐locus clonal type and carry the A2226V mutation, which appears to be inherited as a dominant trait in this species. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide new insight into the resistance conferred by A2226V and have implications for the control of M. persicae in Australia and worldwide. Pesticide active ingredients are frequently detected in the rivers, creeks, wetlands, estuaries, and marine waters of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region and are one of the main contributors to poor water quality. Pesticide concentrations detected in the environment through water quality monitoring programs can be compared against estimates of ecologically "safe" concentrations (i.e., water quality guidelines) to assess the potential hazard and risk posed to aquatic ecosystems. Water quality guidelines are also required to estimate the aquatic risk posed by pesticide mixtures, which is used for the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan pesticide target. Seventy-four pesticide active ingredients and their degradates are frequently detected in GBR catchment waterways, however many do not have water quality guidelines in the Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality. The current study derives ecotoxicity threshold values (ETVs) as unendorsed guideline values for active ingredients in two fungicides (4-hydroxychlorothalonil (fungicide degradate) and carbendazim) and two insecticides (dimethoate and methoxyfenozide) that are commonly detected in GBR catchment waterways. The proposed ETVs have been derived using species sensitivity distributions, as recommended in the Australian and New Zealand nationally endorsed method for deriving water quality guidelines for aquatic ecosystem protection. Four ETVs were derived for each chemical with values that should theoretically protect 99, 95, 90 and 80 % of species (i.e., PC99, PC95, PC90, PC80, respectively). The PC99 and PC95 values for 4-hydroxychlorothalonil, carbendazim, dimethoate and methoxyfenozide were 0.49 μg/L and 4 μg/L, 0.029 μg/L and 0.45 μg/L, 0.11 μg/L and 5.8 μg/L and 0.19 μg/L and 2 μg/L, respectively. The ETVs will be used in an ecological hazard and risk assessment across GBR waterways in part two of this study. A lack of toxicity data quantifying responses of Australian native mammals to agricultural pesticides prompted an investigation into the sensitivity of the stripe-faced dunnart, Sminthopsis macroura (Gould 1845) to the insecticide, fipronil (5-amino-3-cyano-1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4-trifluoromethylsulfinyl pyrazole, CAS No. 120068-37-3). Using the Up-And-Down method for determining acute oral toxicity in mammals (OECD) median lethal dose estimates of 990 mg kg−1 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 580.7–4770.0 mg kg−1) and 270.4 mg kg−1 (95% CI = 0.0–>20,000.0 mg kg−1) were resolved for male and female S. macroura, respectively. The difference between median lethal dose estimates for males and females may have been influenced by the older ages of two female dunnarts. Consequently, further modelling of female responses to fipronil doses used the following assumptions: (a) death at 2000 mg kg−1, (b) survival at 500 mg kg−1 and (c) a differential response (both survival and death) at 990 mg kg−1. This modelling revealed median lethal dose estimates for female S. macroura of 669.1 mg kg−1 (95% CI = 550–990 mg kg−1; assuming death at 990 mg kg−1) and 990 mg kg−1 (95% CI = 544.7–1470 mg kg−1; assuming survival at 990 mg kg−1). These median lethal dose estimates are 3–10-fold higher than available LD50 values of 94 mg kg−1 for a similarly sized eutherian mammal, Mus musculus (L. 1758) and 97 mg kg−1 for Rattus norvegicus (Birkenhout 1769). Globally, 27 aphid species have evolved resistance to almost 100 insecticide active ingredients. A proactive approach to resistance management in pest aphids is needed; this should include risk analysis, followed by regular baseline susceptibility assays for species deemed at high risk of evolving resistance. The cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) has evolved insecticide resistance to multiple insecticides outside Australia and was recently identified as a high-risk species in Australia. In this study, we generated toxicity data against four insecticides (representing four unique chemical Mode of Action groups) for populations of A. craccivora collected across Australia. Alpha-cypermethrin was the most toxic chemical to A. craccivora in leaf-dip laboratory bioassays with an average LC50 value across nine populations of 0.008 mg a.i./L, which was significantly lower than dimethoate (1.17 mg a.i./L) and pirimicarb (0.89 mg a.i./L). Small, but significant, differences in sensitivity were detected in some populations against pirimicarb and dimethoate, whereas responses to alpha-cypermethrin and imidacloprid were not significantly different across all aphid populations examined in this study. For all insecticides, the field rate controlled 100% of individuals tested. The data generated will be important for future monitoring of insecticide responses of A. craccivora. Proactive management, including increased reliance on non-chemical pest management approaches and routine insecticide baseline sensitivity studies, is recommended for A. craccivora. The use of chemical pesticides to manage locust populations in natural ecosystems is likely to impact non-target arthropods and their predators. However, the relative effects of different locust control applications on Australian birds are unknown. Aerial applications of fipronil and fenitrothion are examples of two pesticides used in locust control in semiarid Australia. To test the relative impacts of pesticides on non-target fauna, pesticides were applied to replicate sites using aerial ultra-low-volume application methods. The body condition and biomarkers of pesticide exposure in resident white-winged fairy wrens (Malurus leucopterus leuconotus) at treatment and control sites were measured for two weeks before and after treatments. No measures suggested negative impacts of pesticide applications. However, birds monitored at treatment sites gained mass, possibly due to indirect impacts of pesticides on bird feeding patterns or the availability or behaviour of insect prey. Bird mass measures remained high at fipronil sites, whereas the mass of birds at fenitrothion sites returned to baseline levels within one week. As this study was conducted during dry conditions, when locust plagues are less likely, future insecticide research should also consider the availability of insect prey, its effect on insectivore feeding behaviour and the interaction of rainfall events. The relative effects of locust control applications on Australian insectivorous birds are unknown. Aerial applications of fipronil and fenitrothion were applied during dry conditions. The body condition and biomarkers of exposure in white-winged fairy wrens suggested no negative impacts of pesticides. The fungal species Metarhizium novozealandicum, that occurs only in New Zealand and Australia has been poorly studied. In this work, a new strain of M. novozealandicum isolated from a larva of Wiseana sp. is described based on morphology, genomic multilocus (ITS, EF-1α and β-tubulin) phylogeny, growth in different culture media and insecticidal activity. The isolate AgR-F177 was clustered in the same clade with M. novozealandicum. AgR-F177 colonies developed faster on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) than on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) when incubated at 25°C, with no growth observed at 30°C on either media. Conidia yield on an oat-based medium in semisolid fermentation was 7.41 x 108conidia/g of substrate and a higher yield of 1.68 x 109conidia/g of substrate was obtained using solid fermentation on cooked rice. AgR-F177 formed microsclerotia (MS) in liquid fermentation after 7 days reaching the maximum yield of 3.3 × 103 MS/mL after 10 days. AgR-F177 caused mortality in Wiseana copularis, Costelytra giveni and Plutella xylostella larvae with efficacies up to 100%, 69.2%, and 45.7%, respectively. The ease of production of AgR-F177 with different fermentation systems and its pathogenicity against different insect pests reveal its potential as a new biopesticide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Protein bait spray is a tool used widely in tephritid fruit fly pest (Diptera: Tephritidae) control and eradication programs. However, this technique might have a negative effect on non‐target, beneficial insects. Aphytis lingnanensis is a very successful parasitoid of the California red scale, Aonidiella aurantii, a worldwide pest of citrus. Though A. lingnanensis is widely used in augmentative release programs, the impact of protein bait‐insecticide mixtures on the parasitoid is not documented. In this study, we investigated the attraction of A. lingnanensis to Pinnacle® protein, a fruit fly protein bait commonly used in Australia. Following this, the contact toxicity of field weathered residues of protein bait mixed with the insecticides spinosad, fipronil, malathion and chlorpyrifos to A. lingnanensis were evaluated. Finally, the non‐lethal impact of these residues on the capacity of A. lingnanensis to parasitize its host was investigated. Food‐deprived parasitoids were not attracted to protein but were significantly attracted to honey. The lack of attraction of protein, however, increased when sugar was added to it. Relative to a control of only protein, protein bait‐insecticide mixtures applied on citrus leaves and weathered outdoors for 2 h, 3 days, 7 days and 12 days caused high mortality of A. lingnanensis. The residual toxicity of the four weathering periods, for all the protein bait‐insecticide mixtures, produced high mortality rates varying between 90% and 100%. In addition, the capacity of A. lingnanensis to parasitize its host after exposure to weathered residues containing an insecticide was severely affected. The results suggest that A. lingnanensis is highly susceptible to the insecticides evaluated here when used in fruit fly protein baits. Therefore, the use of these insecticides in protein bait sprays, as part of an area wide fruit fly management, should be carefully considered in areas where augmentative release and conservation of A. lingnanensis are also applied. Detecting the number of invasions is crucial to understanding the process of invasion and perhaps the success of some invasive pest species. Detecting multiple invasions can be difficult using partial mitochondrial COI, however, due to lack of variation. To examine the post-invasion history of Bemisia argentifolii (also called B. tabaci Middle East-Asia Minor 1 and B biotype) in Australia and test for the presence of spatial genetic structure, we developed microsatellite loci based on the whole-genome sequence of B. argentifolii. We investigated gene flow among populations of B. argentifolii collected between 1995 and 2018, covering the time since the first detection in Australia (1994). Structure plots and PCAs of the microsatellite data revealed three clusters in 1995–1996, indicating multiple introductions. Since then, B. argentifolii has become a widespread single genetic population across the continent, with no geographic genetic structure in recent samples. The haplotype network generated from mitochondrial COI shows that Australian B. argentifolii mostly has the same haplotype as the invasive populations established elsewhere around the world. Analysis of the more recent samples showed that gene flow was high across regions, indicating movement of B. argentifolii across Australia is currently extensive. Undesirable traits and pathogens not already present in Australia, including insecticide resistance and plant viruses, could arrive with any new introductions of B. argentifolii and are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult to contain. Honey is a popular agricultural product containing mostly sugars and water, but due to its nutritious components and natural production by honeybees (Apis mellifera) from floral nectar, it is marketed as a premium health food item. As environmental monitors, honeybees can potentially transfer environmental contaminants to honey. Whilst pesticides can have ubiquitous presence in agricultural and urban areas, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be more prevalent in higher density urban/industrial environments. Australian beehives are customarily located in rural areas/forests, but it is increasingly popular to keep hives in urban areas. This study assessed the levels of environmental contaminants in honeys (n = 212) from Queensland/Australian sources including rural, peri-urban and urban areas. Honey samples were analysed by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS for 53 herbicides, 83 pesticides, 18 breakdown products (for certain pesticides/herbicides) and 33 PAHs and showed low/negligible pesticide, herbicide and PAHs contamination, consistent regardless of honey origins. The ability to produce large numbers of pesticide-exposed insects (e.g. crickets) is important for feeding studies into the effects of pesticides on key predatory species. House crickets (Acheta domesticus L. 1758) were submersed in serial dilutions of the pesticides, fenitrothion and fipronil, used for the control of locusts in Australia, and then rapidly frozen for residue analysis. Good correlations were found between increasing concentrations of serial pesticide dilutions and the resultant residual concentrations of the parent compounds in crickets, with R2 values of 0.949 (fenitrothion) and 0.946 (fipronil). R2 values for the much less abundant fipronil metabolites were lower 0.858 (sulfone), 0.368 (desulfinyl) and 0.785 (sulfide). This method enables insecticide exposure mimicking the field conditions to be assessed, and can be done immediately prior to an experiment. Background: Integrating fungal biocontrol agents into crop protection programs dominated by synthetic pesticides is an important first step towards developing an integrated pest management (IPM) program; however, their successful integration relies on an understanding of how their performance may be impacted by the remaining agrochemicals deployed for managing other pests and diseases. In this study we tested 10 formulated pesticides used in macadamia production at different concentrations to determine their effects on the germination, mycelial growth and sporulation of Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana in vitro. Further tests with laboratory‐grade actives of the noncompatible pesticides were conducted to determine whether any antagonistic effects were caused by the active constituent or by formulation additives. Results: At their registered concentrations, formulated trichlorfon, acephate and indoxacarb were compatible with M. anisopliae, whereas B. bassiana showed compatibility with formulated trichlorfon, acephate, indoxacarb, sulfoxaflor and spinetoram. Bioassays using laboratory‐grade active constituents indicated that the adverse impact of formulated beta‐cyfluthrin on both fungal species and that of formulated methidathion on B. bassiana is probably due to components of the emulsifiable concentrate formulations rather than their active constituents. Diazinon was the only insecticidal active that showed high toxicity to both fungal species. The two fungicides, carbendazim and pyraclostrobin, were toxic to both fungal species at all tested concentrations. Conclusion: Our results identify which pesticides used on macadamias in Australia are compatible and incompatible with entomopathogenic fungi. Pesticide active ingredients (PAIs) are one of the main contributors affecting water quality in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Area (GBRCA). While an extensive list of pesticides is monitored in the GBRCA, only a limited number have water quality guideline values (WQGs), meaning it is not possible to know whether these PAIs are present at concentrations that may pose a hazard to the aquatic environment. In the current study, we derived 66 ecotoxicity threshold values (ETVs) for PAIs, the equivalent of WQGs, with a focus on PAIs applied to sugar cane. The hazard posed by PAIs monitored as part of the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Loads Monitoring Program (GBRCLMP) was assessed by comparing the derived ETVs with monitoring data from 2016/2017 to 2021/2022. The derived ETVs included herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, with the values that should protect 99 or 95 % of aquatic species (PC99 or PC95) spanning nine orders of magnitude. The concentrations of 10 PAIs exceeded their respective ETVs, giving a hazard quotient (HQ) >1. Of particular concern were insecticides chlorpyrifos, diazinon and methomyl, which have maximum HQ values >10. However, joint probability plots indicated that the PAIs generally pose a low risk to the aquatic environment, with most samples below the limit of reporting. As PAIs are predominantly found in mixtures in the GBRCA, the hazard posed by PAI mixtures was assessed by summing all individual HQ values in a sample for all PAIs with an ETV or WQG. On average, the insecticide active ingredient imidacloprid and herbicide active ingredients metolachlor, metsulfuron methyl, diuron and imazepic were the drivers of combined mixture hazard. The bird‐cherry oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi) is a global pest, attacking most cereal crops including barley, wheat, oats and triticale. The aphids cause yield losses through direct feeding damage and the transmission of plant viruses. In Australia, feeding injury can reduce cereal yields by 6%, with the damage caused by aphid‐vectored viruses reducing the yield of cereal crops by up to 30%. Aphid control in these crops is achieved almost exclusively with insecticides, and there is growing concern surrounding insecticide resistance evolution in multiple aphid species. In this study, nine field populations of R. padi were collected from localities representing the major grain growing regions of Australia. Toxicity data against four insecticides (dimethoate, alpha‐cypermethrin, pirimicarb and imidacloprid) was generated for each aphid population. This revealed little differences in population responses for three of these insecticides. For alpha‐cypermethrin, a widely used insecticide in Australia, there were significant differences between several populations. These data will be important for future monitoring of insecticide responses of R. padi and highlight the impending pest management challenges growers could encounter in Australia. Heat stress is one of the major limitations to crop productivity worldwide. Global warming effects are expected to increase the number of hot days and increase the probability and intensity of heat stress events. Short periods (3–5 days) of heat stress with maximum temperatures exceeding 35°C often occur during late spring and early summer in some pyrethrum growing regions of Australia. These heat stress events usually coincide with pyrethrum flowering period. Pyrethrum is a perennial herbaceous plant which is commercially grown for extraction of pyrethrins which accumulate in the achenes of the flowers and are used as a natural insecticide. This experiment was conducted to understand the effects of timing of short periods of heat stress on flower development and pyrethrum yield. Plants were subjected to short periods of high temperature treatments (12 hr at 35–40°C) for three consecutive days at three flower maturity stages (early, mid, late). Control plants were grown at ambient temperature (10–25°C) throughout the flowering period. Exposure of pyrethrum plants to short periods of high temperature during the flowering period caused a significant reduction in the flower and pyrethrin yield. This was associated with the reduction in flower size and accelerated flower senescence. Exposure of pyrethrum plants to heat stress significantly increased the rate of flower development resulting in a shorter flowering period. Overall, plants grown under control treatment showed slower rate of flower development and longer duration flowering period. This resulted in longer duration of pyrethrin accumulation and higher yield of pyrethrins per flower. Timing and duration of heat stress significantly influenced pyrethrin yield per flower. Heat stress caused more severe yield reductions at early flowering than later in the flowering period. Research focusing on agronomic strategies, phenology and breeding for tolerance to heat stress is therefore important to cope with future climate changes and to obtain maximum pyrethrin yield. Lucerne flea (Sminthurus viridis Linnaeus) is an important establishment pest of winter grain crops and pastures in Australia. Control of S. viridis largely relies on the application of insecticides through foliar sprays or seed treatments; however, in recent years, farmers have faced increasing difficulties managing this pest. This is likely due to their high inherent tolerance to certain chemicals, although there are increasing concerns around emerging resistance. Despite this, there have been no studies worldwide investigating insecticide sensitivity shifts on S. viridis. Further, there is currently no established method to test the response of S. viridis to neonicotinoids, which are now widely used to protect many crops attacked by this species. Here, we established a robust and sensitive bioassay methodology to test neonicotinoids against S. viridis. We also generated important sensitivity data for the first time across multiple S. viridis populations from geographically distinct regions in Australia to two commonly used insecticides, omethoate, and imidacloprid. While there was variation in responses between populations for both chemicals, there is no evidence to suggest insecticide resistance has evolved in the field. This study is an important step for future monitoring of insecticide resistance in S. viridis , particularly given the considerable selection pressure imposed on this pest in Australia and its purported high-risk of evolving resistance. The genus Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) is native from Australia and includes about 900 species. Eucalyptus plantations are nowadays extended worldwide, particularly in the tropical and temperate regions. Plants, giving large biomasses rich in essential oils (EOs), are a great source of bioactive natural compounds that can be used in sectors other than medical. EOs can act as insecticides and acaricides, and represent valuable alternatives to the synthetic pest controllers, being biodegradable and human-environmental safe products. Botanical insecticides/acaricides can be applied as a strategy in pests management programs, and laboratory investigations represent an important preliminary step that provide an understanding of insect/mite-plant interactions. In this review, 117 articles were analysed regarding 71 Eucalyptus species and 5 hybrids, among which E. globulus and E. camaldulensis result the most investigated species. The major constituents of most Eucalyptus EOs are monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes including 1.8-cineole, α-pinene, p -cymene, α-terpineol, limonene, ɣ-terpinene, α-phellandrene, β-pinene, globulol, aromadendrene, β-phellandrene. The EOs reviewed were tested on 50 insects and 13 mites species. Aedes aegypti , Musca domestica , Tribolium castaneum , Callosobruchus maculatus , Sitophilus oryzae , Pediculus humanus are the most studied target species. Several developmental stages of the tested animal have been investigated: eggs, larvae, pupae/nymphae and adults. Several parameters have been monitored using different methods to study the repellent, insecticidal and acaricidal activities. Contact and topical toxicity, fumigant toxicity, fecundity, ovicidal, repellent, antifeedant activities, acetylcholinesterase inhibition and antennal response have been evaluated. Results were expressed as lethal concentrations/doses, lethal times, percentages, etc. Furthermore, the phytochemical profiles of the Eucalyptus species EOs analysed, and the spectrum of insects and mites on which the Eucalyptus EOs have been tested as repellent, insecticidal and acaricidal were summarized, to promote their applications in the areas of food storage, plant protection and human/animal health. The citrus gall wasp (CGW), Bruchophagus fellis (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), is a serious pest of citrus in southern Australia. Severe infestations can result in yield loss and a reduction in fruit size. Several parasitoid species attack CGW, with Megastigmus brevivalvus (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Torymidae) (MBV) being the dominant species. Both CGW and MBV are univoltine and adult wasps emerge from galls in the spring. Median emergence of MBV lags behind that of CGW by 2–3 weeks. We modelled the effect of spray timing for foliar-applied, non-systemic insecticides on the relative exposures of CGW and MBV based on their emergence distributions and estimated the optimal spray timing that maximises the control of CGW while minimising the impact on MBV. Three temporal emergence distribution scenarios for the two species and 28 periods of residual insecticide activity were considered in the investigation. The results showed that the optimal spray timing was always before the peak emergence of CGW. Depending on the residual activity of the insecticide, the optimal spray date pre-dated the peak emergence of CGW by 1–24 days, with longer lead times for insecticides with longer residual activity. By contrast, the optimal spray date varied little across the different emergence scenarios, suggesting that the results apply over a wide range of locations and seasons. A single insecticide application at the optimal timing may not guarantee satisfactory control of CGW. When the residual activity of the insecticide is short, multiple applications with a combined residual activity of 16 days are needed to ensure insecticide contact with ≥90% of all CGW that emerge in a season. • Median emergence of the citrus gall wasp occurs 2–3 weeks before that of its primary parasitoid. • Effects of spray timing on the relative exposure of the gall wasp and the parasitoid were modelled. • Optimal spray timing is 1–24 days before peak host emergence. • Appropriate spray scheduling can expose most gall wasps to insecticides whilst minimising impacts on the parasitoid. Pesticides are necessary for the control of pest plant, fungi and insect species. After application, they may find their way into waste streams, such as municipal sewage, where their spatio-temporal distribution has not been well characterised. To further understand the spatio-temporal distribution and to evaluate potential sources and fate after treatment, 64 pesticides were analysed in matched influents and effluents of 22 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) from across Australia. The pesticides consisted of 30 herbicides and 8 herbicide metabolites or transformation products, 16 insecticides and 10 fungicides. The samples were 1084 24-hr composite samples pooled into 113 samples. Pools represented two influent and one effluent pools at each of 22 sites in 2019, as well as two pools per year from 2009 to 2021 for an 11-year long-term temporal trend at a subset of two locations. The total population served by the 22 sites was equivalent to ~41 % of the Australian population. Of the 64 pesticides, 25 were detected in influent, with highest influent concentrations up to 100 μg/L and effluent concentrations up to 16 μg/L for the herbicide 2,4-D. The total mass of pesticides was extrapolated to Australia, suggesting ~33 t of the targeted pesticides entered WWTP influent annually nation-wide, with 14 t emitted into effluents annually. Long-term trends varied by analyte and for carbendazim decreases over time, may be related to restrictions in use. Risk quotients (RQs) were calculated for 14 analytes in the effluent. 35 % had an RQ above one, indicating a potential environmental risk. Fipronil had the highest RQ (49) at Site 6. The population-normalized mass loads of pesticides were site-specific, and in some cases correlated with land use attributes suggestive of point sources. Silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) Middle East‐Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1), previously known as B biotype, is an agricultural pest of global significance and has developed resistance to many commonly used insecticides. Toxicity of spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole and dinotefuran to B. tabaci MEAM1 populations from eastern Australia was determined by laboratory bioassay, using either a foliar leaf dip or systemic uptake methodology. All field‐collected populations tested were susceptible to spirotetramat (12 tested from 2011 to 2015), cyantraniliprole (23 tested from 2014 to 2017) and dinotefuran (16 tested from 2015 to 2017). Based on LC50 values, there was a 2.1‐fold difference in the response of field populations to spirotetramat, a threefold difference in response to cyantraniliprole, while the response to dinotefuran varied depending on assay used, 1.8 vs. 2.6 with a foliar assay and systemic uptake assay, respectively. Testing of spirotetramat and cyantraniliprole against a pyriproxyfen‐resistant strain, AY09‐1R demonstrated no evidence of cross‐resistance to pyriproxyfen. When tested against dinotefuran, AY09‐1R had a resistance factor of two indicating possible weak cross‐resistance to pyriproxyfen, although it is also possible that the strain carries other forms of resistance given its origin. Discriminating doses of 100 mg/L for spirotetramat, 1 mg/L for cyantraniliprole and 60 mg/L (systemic) and 600 mg/L (foliar) for dinotefuran were calculated from the bioassay data. All three insecticides demonstrated good efficacy against silverleaf whitefly, and for the Australian cotton industry, they add three modes of action to the insecticide resistance management strategy, providing greater flexibility in control options. This study has established baseline toxicity data and discriminating doses for spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole and dinotefuran, which will serve as a useful reference for future monitoring and management of B. tabaci MEAM1 insecticide resistance in Australian cotton. Aim: To describe the epidemiology of veterinary pharmaceutical-related exposures based on telephone calls to Australia's largest poisons information centre. Methods: A retrospective analysis of exposures to pharmaceutical products intended for animal use, managed by the New South Wales Poison Information Centre (NSWPIC, Australia's largest poisons information centre) from 2014 to 2016 inclusive, was conducted. Case narratives were reviewed and coded for exposure-related circumstances and intended species. Descriptive statistics were generated and forest plots were produced to visualise the perceived severity of products. Results: From 2014 through 2016 NSWPIC received 2655 calls regarding exposure to veterinary pharmaceutical products: 11.72 human exposures to veterinary pharmaceuticals per 1000 PIC initial contact exposure calls (CI: 10.95–12.49) per year. The vast majority of exposures were with products intended for companion animals, particularly of the class "antiparasitic products, insecticides and repellents", with the most common individual specified product being pimobendan, a phosphodiesterase inhibitor used as a cardiac inotrope and vasodilator in dogs. Immunologicals presented the greatest perceived severity, with livestock vaccinations eliciting substantial proportions of symptomatic exposures and those receiving hospitalisation. Exploratory behaviour, such as accessing packaging, was a common source of exposure within toddlers and children in particular. Conclusions: This overview of all exposures to veterinary pharmaceutical products has identified high-risk groups to target interventions to reduce the incidence of future exposures. The pet-owning population and those personnel administering immunologicals to livestock represent a substantial cohort of individuals at risk of harm during, and in the immediate time following, administration of veterinary pharmaceutical products to animals. It is important to review risk management plans for veterinary pharmaceutical products to ensure product safety is as stringent as human equivalents. Fluorescent dust marking is widely used in tephritid sterile insect programs to differentiate mass reared sterile individuals from the wild individuals. While fluorescent dust marking is economical, it does not guarantee 100% marking success. In programs releasing millions of sterile flies, even a very low rate of misclassification of sterile individuals (due to a failure of dust marking) could greatly over-estimate the number of resident wild individuals. This could be an important outcome since, in some horticultural production areas, detection of as few as two wild individuals trigger suspension of exports. In this study, we sought to test the accuracy of fluorescent dust marking for the identification of sterile Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) during a sterile release technique (SIT) program in New South Wales, Australia. We used DNA microsatellite data to as an independent discriminator between wild from sterile flies. Our results confirm earlier suspicions that a small proportion of sterile flies remain unmarked during these releases. We also found that wild flies can be misclassified as sterile due to the presence of acquired dust grains on the body. These results indicate that any B. tryoni SIT program should not rely on fluorescent dust alone to unambiguously identify sterile released individuals. The Australian ruminant livestock industries are faced with the need to control parasitic infectious diseases that can seriously impact the health of animals. However, increasing levels of resistance to insecticides, anthelmintics and acaricides are substantially reducing the ability to control some of these parasites. Here we review the current situation with regard to chemical resistances in parasites across the various sectors of the Australian ruminant livestock industries and assess the level of threat that these resistances pose to the sustainability of these sectors in the short to long terms. We also look at the extent to which testing for resistance occurs across the various industry sectors, and hence how well-informed these sectors are of the extent of chemical resistance. We examine on-farm management practices, breeding of parasite-resistant animals, and non-chemical therapeutics that may act as short to long term means to reduce the current reliance on chemicals for parasite control. Finally, we look at the balance between the prevalence and magnitude of current resistances and the availability and adoption rates of management, breeding and therapeutic alternatives in order to assess the parasite control outlook for the various industry sectors., (© 2023 The Authors. The use of pyrethroid and neonicotinoid insecticides has increased in Australia over the last decade, and as a consequence, increased concentrations of the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid have been measured in Australian rivers. Previous studies have shown that non-target crustaceans, including commercially important species, can be extremely sensitive to these pesticides. Most shrimp farms in Australia are predominantly located adjacent to estuaries so they can obtain their required saline water, which support multiple land uses upstream (e.g. sugar-cane farming, banana farming, beef cattle and urbanisation). Larval and post-larval shrimp may be most susceptible to the impacts of these pesticides because of their high surface area to volume ratio and rapid growth requirements. However, given the uncertainties in the levels of insecticides in farm intake water and regarding the impacts of insecticide exposure on shrimp larvae, the risks that the increased use of new classes of pesticide pose towards survival of post-larval phase shrimp cannot be adequately predicted. To assess the potential for risk, toxicity in 20 day past hatch post-larval Black Tiger shrimp ( Penaeus monodon ) to modern use insecticides, imidacloprid, bifenthin, and fipronil was measured as decreased survival and feeding inhibition. Post-larval phase shrimp were sensitive to fipronil, bifenthrin, and imidacloprid, in that order, at concentrations that were comparable to those that cause mortality other crustaceans. Bifenthrin and imidacloprid exposure reduced the ability of post-larval shrimp to capture live prey at environmentally realistic concentrations. Concentrations of a broad suite of pesticides were also measured in shrimp farm intake waters. Some pesticides were detected in every sample. Most of the pesticides detected were measured below concentrations that are toxic to post-larval shrimp as used in this study, although pesticides exceed guideline values, suggesting the possibility of indirect or mixture-related impacts. However, at two study sites, the concentrations of insecticides were sufficient to cause toxicity in shrimp post larvae, based on the risk assessment undertaken in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Larvae of Helicoverpa armigera and Spodoptera frugiperda are important pests of agricultural commodities and while chemical control targeting larvae of these pest species is widely adopted, suppression of populations by bisexual attract-and-kill strategies which target adults also have potential applications in management. This study investigated the relative toxicity of insecticide groups registered as mixing partners for attract-and-kill agents in Australia. Contact and ingestion toxicity in adult and larval stages of H. armigera and S. frugiperda was tested by administering methomyl and spinosyn insecticides topically and orally in laboratory bioassays. Methomyl was generally the least toxic insecticide and larvae of both species were less sensitive to methomyl than adults. Adult mortality induced by methomyl was stable from 24 to 72 h after treatment in S. frugiperda whereas mortality of adult H. armigera increased from 24 to 72 h. Spinosyns were slower acting in both H. armigera and S. frugiperda with increases in adult mortality from 24 to 72 h after treatment. Spinetoram was the most toxic insecticide on adults and larvae both H. armigera and S. frugiperda with higher insecticidal activity on larvae compared to adults of both species. Spinosad was also more toxic on larvae of S. frugiperda compared to adults. This was in contrast to H. armigera larvae which were less sensitive to spinosad than their adult counterparts. A between-species comparison of insecticide toxicity showed larvae of both species were equally sensitive to spinosyns while adults of H. armigera were more sensitive to all three insecticides than adults of S. frugiperda. Insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides are ubiquitously applied in agricultural production systems to increase yields by managing insect pests, weeds, and diseases. While valuable, these chemicals can also have unwanted off-target effects on human health, biodiversity, and resistance evolution. Pesticide usage data can help to estimate and mitigate these impacts, but many countries lack spatial data on chemical usage trends. In contrast to pesticide usage, data on pesticide registration are more widely available and often organised into structured databases in accordance with governmental regulatory requirements. Here, we explored the extent to which pesticide registration databases can infer patterns of usage across agricultural pesticides, based on United States (US) and Australian data. Our predictive models explained 56% and 38% of the variation in pesticide usage across the US and Australia, respectively, with pesticide registrations explaining 58% and 23% of this variation and the remainder explained by land use patterns. Our results show that pesticide registrations can help to infer usage patterns across different chemical groups, active ingredients, and agricultural regions. Increasing numbers of registered products, pests, and products for a given active ingredient were associated with increased usage. However, there remains unexplained variation in pesticide usage patterns between active ingredient groups, highlighting the importance of additional explanatory factors. The value of chemical registration databases could be further enhanced through registration against taxonomically-identified pest species, rather than relying on common names or broadly defined groups. Background: Anopheles farauti is one of the major vectors of malaria in the Southwest Pacific region and is responsible for past outbreaks in Australia. With an adaptable biting profile conducive to behavioural resistance to indoor residual spraying (IRS) and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), its all-night biting behaviour can switch to biting mostly in the early evening. With limited insight into the biting profile of An. farauti populations in areas that have not encountered IRS or ITNs, the aim of this study was to develop insights on the biting behaviour of a malaria control naive population of An. farauti., Methods: Biting profiles of An. farauti were conducted at Cowley Beach Training Area, in north Queensland, Australia. Initially, encephalitis virus surveillance (EVS) traps were used to document the 24-h biting profile of An. farauti and then human landing collections (HLC) were used to follow the 18.00-06.00 h biting profile. The human landing catches (HLC) were performed at both the end of the wet (April) and dry (October) seasons., Results: Data exploration using a Random Forest Model shows that time of night is the most important variable for predicting An. farauti biting activity. Temperature was found to be the next important predictor, followed by humidity, trip, collector, and season. The significant effect of time of night and peak in time of night biting, between 19.00 and 20.00 h was also observed in a generalized linear model. The main effect of temperature was significant and non-linear and appears to have a positive effect on biting activity. The effect of humidity is also significant but its relationship with biting activity is more complex. This population's biting profile is similar to populations found in other parts of its range prior to insecticide intervention. A tight timing for the onset of biting was identified with more variation with the end of biting, which is likely underpinned by an endogenous circadian clock rather than any light intensity., Conclusion: This study sees the first record of a relationship between biting activity and the decreasing temperature during the night for the malaria vector, Anopheles farauti., (© 2023. Purpose: Dysphagia is common sequelae of chemical ingestion injury, resulting from damage to critical swallowing structures. From a speech-language pathology perspective, this study outlines the physiological deficits in 2 individuals with severe injury (1 woman, acid; 1 man, alkali) and the pattern of dysphagia rehabilitation and recovery. Method: A retrospective chart review of clinical and instrumental assessments was conducted to examine swallow characteristics and speech-language pathology management (compensatory and rehabilitation strategies) at multiple time points. Results: Chemical ingestion injury resulted in severe pharyngeal dysphagia for both participants, warranting speech-language pathology management. Dysphagia was characterized by poor base of tongue mobility and reduced laryngeal excursion. Decreased airway patency and protection, secondary to mucosal sloughing, widespread edema, and structural deficits necessitated tracheostomy. Recovery was complicated by physical alterations of pharyngeal and laryngeal structures (e.g., interarytenoid adhesions) and esophageal strictures. Participant 1 was discharged (Day 135) consuming a texture-modified diet; Participant 2 remained nil by mouth (Day 329). Conclusions: Dysphagia recovery subsequent to chemical ingestion is protracted and complex. The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) is a significant global pest of a broad range of horticultural and grain crops. Control of M. persicae is primarily dependent on insecticides, however, this species has a high propensity to evolve insecticide resistance and has evolved resistance to over 80 insecticides from various chemical groups worldwide. In Australia, widespread resistance to carbamates, organophosphates, pyrethroids and neonicotinoids in M. persicae populations is commonplace. Given the ability of M. persicae to establish resistance to new chemistries quickly, programs are needed to monitor susceptibility to new insecticides before their widespread use. In this study, we used leaf-dip bioassays to generate sensitivity data and investigate potential cross-resistance in multiple field-collected populations of Australian M. persicae to two recently registered insecticides, flonicamid and afidopyropen. After 144 and 168 h exposure, we found little variation in the susceptibility of M. persicae populations to either flonicamid or afidopyropen, and no evidence of sensitivity shifts in the field. Additionally, there was no evidence of cross-resistance between flonicamid or afidopyropen and multiple known resistance mechanisms for carbamate, pyrethroid, organophosphate and neonicotinoid insecticides. The sensitivity data generated in this study prior to the evolution of field resistance provides a useful starting point for future resistance monitoring, and allows for the development and implementation of insecticide resistance management strategies which should prolong the long-term efficacy of flonicamid and afidopyropen against M. persicae. • Sensitivity data generated for M. persicae to flonicamid and afidopyropen. • Little variation in susceptibility of M. persicae populations to either chemical. • No evidence of flonicamid or afidopyropen cross resistance in M. persicae. • Baseline data to assist future insecticide resistance management efforts. Prophylactic use of broad-spectrum insecticides is a common feature of broad-acre grains production systems around the world. Efforts to reduce pesticide use in these systems have the potential to deliver environmental benefits to large areas of agricultural land. However, research and extension initiatives aimed at decoupling pest management decisions from the simple act of applying a cheap insecticide have languished. This places farmers in a vulnerable position of high reliance on a few products that may lose their efficacy due to pests developing resistance, or be lost from use due to regulatory changes. The first step towards developing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies involves an increased efficiency of pesticide inputs. Especially challenging is an understanding of when and where an insecticide application can be withheld without risking yield loss. Here, we quantify the effect of different pest management strategies on the abundance of pest and beneficial arthropods, crop damage and yield, across five sites that span the diversity of contexts in which grains crops are grown in southern Australia. Our results show that while greater insecticide use did reduce the abundance of many pests, this was not coupled with higher yields. Feeding damage by arthropod pests was seen in plots with lower insecticide use but this did not translate into yield losses. For canola, we found that plots that used insecticide seed treatments were most likely to deliver a yield benefit; however other insecticides appear to be unnecessary and economically costly. When considering wheat, none of the insecticide inputs provided an economically justifiable yield gain. These results indicate that there are opportunities for Australian grain growers to reduce insecticide inputs without risking yield loss in some seasons. Pesticides are known to affect non-targeted soil microorganisms. Still, studies comparing the effect of multiple pesticides on a wide range of microbial endpoints associated with carbon cycling are scarce. Here, we employed fluorescence enzymatic assay and real-time PCR to evaluate the effect of 20 commercial pesticides, applied at their recommended dose and five times their recommended dose, on soil carbon cycling related enzymatic activities (α-1,4-glucosidase, β-1,4-glucosidase, β-d-cellobiohydrolase and β-xylosidase), and on the absolute abundance of functional genes (cbhl and chiA), in three different South Australian agricultural soils. The effects on cellulolytic and chitinolytic microorganisms, and the total microbial community composition were determined using shotgun metagenomic sequencing in selected pesticide-treated and untreated samples. The application of insecticides significantly increased the cbhl and chiA genes absolute abundance in the acidic soil. At the community level, insecticide fipronil had the greatest stimulating effect on cellulolytic and chitinolytic microorganisms, followed by fungicide metalaxyl-M and insecticide imidacloprid. A shift towards a fungal dominated microbial community was observed in metalaxyl-M treated soil. Biological control of mosquito vectors using the endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia is an emerging strategy for the management of human arboviral diseases. We recently described the development of a strain of Aedes aegypti infected with the Wolbachia strain wAlbB (referred to as the wAlbB2-F4 strain) through simple backcrossing of wild type Australian mosquitoes with a wAlbB infected Ae. aegypti strain from the USA. Field releases of male wAlbB2-F4 mosquitoes resulted in the successful suppression of wild populations of mosquitoes in the trial sites by exploiting the strain's Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility. We now demonstrate that the strain is resistant to infection by dengue and Zika viruses and is genetically similar to endemic Queensland populations. There was a fourfold reduction in the proportion of wAlbB2-F4 mosquitoes that became infected following a blood meal containing dengue 2 virus (16.7%) compared to wild type mosquitoes (69.2%) and a 6-7 fold reduction in the proportion of wAlbB2-F4 mosquitoes producing virus in saliva following a blood meal containing an epidemic strain of Zika virus (8.7% in comparison to 58.3% in wild type mosquitoes). Restriction-site Associated DNA (RAD) sequencing revealed that wAlbB2-F4 mosquitoes have > 98% Australian ancestry, confirming the successful introduction of the wAlbB2 infection into the Australian genomic background through backcrossing. Genotypic and phenotypic analyses showed the wAlbB2-F4 strain retains the insecticide susceptible phenotype and genotype of native Australian mosquitoes. We demonstrate that the Wolbachia wAlbB2-F4, in addition to being suitable for population suppression programs, can also be effective in population replacement programs given its inhibition of virus infection in mosquitoes. The ease at which a target mosquito population can be transfected with wAlbB2, while retaining the genotypes and phenotypes of the target population, shows the utility of this strain for controlling the Ae. aegypti mosquitoes and the pathogens they transmit., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

In Australia, eucalypt plantations require management to prevent economic damage by native chrysomelid leaf beetles, generally by aerially spraying a broad-spectrum insecticide. These beetles also pose a serious threat to plantations in other countries., Various alternatives, both 'landscape' and 'control' options, for managing leaf beetles were reviewed and evaluated by a panel of experts. Options were scored on effectiveness, feasibility for use, impact on the environment, perceived social acceptability (including by certification bodies) and perceived cost., None of the options were scored as well as broad-spectrum insecticide for effectiveness, feasibility and perceived cost, although virtually all of the other options scored better for environmental and social outcomes., The highest ranked options were the 'landscape' option of tree improvement to reduce susceptibility to insect attack, and the 'control' option of attract-and-kill traps. The next three ranks were two 'landscape' options aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of natural enemy populations by conserving their overwintering sites and their alternative food and hosts, and then silvicultural management., The best strategy for an Integrated Pest Management programme would be a combination of 'landscape' options to reduce the frequency of pest outbreaks and, if outbreaks occur, spraying with biological insecticides until attract-and-kill traps become available, possibly in combination with repellent sprays in a push-pull strategy. If control measures fail to prevent damaging defoliation, plantations could be fertilized to encourage recovery., Because most of the alternative options are not yet available, many research directions were identified, with the highest priorities being to develop plantation stock that is less susceptible to defoliation and to develop attractants for leaf beetles. Background: Bryobia (Koch) mites belong to the economically important spider mite family, the Tetranychidae, with >130 species described worldwide. Due to taxonomic difficulties and most species being asexual, species identification relies heavily on genetic markers. Multiple putative Bryobia mite species have been identified attacking pastures and grain crops in Australia. In this study, we collected 79 field populations of Bryobia mites and combined these with 134 populations that were collected previously. We characterised taxonomic variation of mites using 28S rDNA amplicon-based DNA metabarcoding using next-generation sequencing approaches and direct Sanger sequencing. We then undertook species distribution modelling of the main genetic lineages and examined the chemical responses of multiple field populations., Results: We identified 47 unique haplotypes across all mites sampled that grouped into four distinct genetic lineages. These lineages have different distributions, with three of the four putative lineages showing different climatic envelopes, as inferred from species distribution modelling. Bryobia mite populations also showed different responses to a widely used insecticide (the organophosphate, omethoate), but not to another chemical (the pyrethroid, bifenthrin) when examined using laboratory bioassays., Conclusion: Our findings indicate that cryptic diversity is likely to complicate the formulation of management strategies for Bryobia mites. Although focussed on Australia, this study demonstrates the challenges of studying Bryobia and highlights the importance of further research into this complex group of mites across the world. © 2022 The Authors. The sheep body louse (Bovicola ovis) commonly referred to as sheep lice are small chewing ectoparasites of sheep. Infection results in significant economic costs to the Australian sheep industry due to reduced wool quality caused by chronic itching from sheep rubbing and biting fleece. Treatment relies on use of insecticides; however, resistance has developed against pyrethroid and other insect growth regulator lousicides. There is urgent need to develop cost-effective lice management to reduce the use of insecticides, with the application of insecticidal treatments only applied when an infestation is detected. However, the current detection method relies on fleece parting for detection of B. ovis which is highly dependent on the skill of the inspector, the number of sheep examined, and the prevalence and severity of the infestation. To improve B. ovis detection, a highly sensitive (5 × 10 -8 ng/μL) and specific multiplex quantitative PCR which simultaneously detects sheep lice and sheep DNA was developed. In addition, a B. ovis loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was developed for field use. The B. ovis LAMP (Bov-LAMP) assay was optimized to reliably detect B. ovis from wool samples down to 5 × 10 -6 ng/μL, with time to positive (T p ) < 10 min. Both assays demonstrate high sensitivity and specificity, enabling rapid identification of B. ovis DNA from sheep fleece samples and have the capacity to be used for ongoing management and surveillance of B. ovis in Australian sheep flocks., (© 2022. Cotton growing landscapes in Australia have been dominated by dual-toxin transgenic Bt varieties since 2004. The cotton crop has thus effectively become a sink for the main target pest, Helicoverpa armigera. Theory predicts that there should be strong selection on female moths to avoid laying on such plants. We assessed oviposition, collected from two cotton-growing regions, by female moths when given a choice of tobacco, cotton and cabbage. Earlier work in the 1980s and 1990s on populations from the same geographic locations indicated these hosts were on average ranked as high, mid and low preference plants, respectively, and that host rankings had a heritable component. In the present study, we found no change in the relative ranking of hosts by females, with most eggs being laid on tobacco, then cotton and least on cabbage. As in earlier work, some females laid most eggs on cotton and aspects of oviposition behaviour had a heritable component. Certainly, cotton is not avoided as a host, and the implications of these finding for managing resistance to Bt cotton are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract: Tea tree oil (TTO) from the Australian native plant Melaleuca alternifolia has wide ranging bio-active properties, including insecticidal and repellent activity against arthropods. Furthermore, composition of commercially available Australian TTO is specified under an International Organization for Standardization standard (ISO 4730), reducing the potential for variable effects often noted with botanical pesticides. The effect of TTO, meeting the ISO standard for terpinen-4-ol chemotype, was tested against sheep lice (Bovicola ovis Schrank) in a series of laboratory studies. Immersion of wool for 60s in formulations containing concentrations of 1% TTO and above caused 100% mortality of adult lice and eggs. Exposure to vapours from TTO, delivered as droplets in fumigation chambers and when applied to wool also caused high mortality in both lice and eggs. The main active component of TTO in the fumigant tests was terpinen-4-ol. Treated surface assays and tests with wool where the formulation was allowed to dry before exposure of lice indicated low persistence. These studies demonstrate that TTO is highly toxic to sheep lice and active at concentrations that suggest potential for the development of TTO-based ovine lousicides. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
