Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is an invasive pest of agricultural crops including sweet corn and maize. The moth was first recorded in Australia in January 2020 and is now considered established in most states and territories, and research is underway to develop management strategies. Extensive rearing of S. frugiperda larvae and eggs occurred from March 2020 to April 2023 to understand the parasitoid complex present in Australia and identify potential biological control agents. We report here on the hymenopteran parasitoids reared during this period, which were identified using a combination of morphology and COI DNA barcoding, and provide images, a key to species, and contextual information to facilitate future research. Twelve species of parasitoids from five families of Hymenoptera are formally reported as parasitising S. frugiperda in Australia. Five species are here described as new: Chelonus patbat Fagan‐Jeffries, sp. nov. (Braconidae), Chelonus trojanus Fagan‐Jeffries, sp. nov. (Braconidae), Coccygidium mellosiheroine Atkin‐Zaldivar & Fagan‐Jeffries, sp. nov. (Braconidae), Coccygidium necatrix Atkin‐Zaldivar & Fagan‐Jeffries, sp. nov. Three polyphagous pest Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae) have recently invaded Australia and are damaging horticultural crops. Parasitic wasps are recognized as effective natural enemies of leafmining species globally and are expected to become important biocontrol agents in Australia. However, the hymenopteran parasitoid complex of agromyzids in Australia is poorly known and its use hindered due to taxonomic challenges when based on morphological characters. Here, we identified 14 parasitoid species of leafminers based on molecular and morphological data. We linked DNA barcodes (5′ end cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences) to five adventive eulophid wasp species (Chrysocharis pubicornis (Zetterstedt), Diglyphus isaea (Walker), Hemiptarsenus varicornis (Girault), Neochrysocharis formosa (Westwood), and Neochrysocharis okazakii Kamijo) and two braconid species (Dacnusa areolaris (Nees) and Opius cinerariae Fischer). We also provide the first DNA barcodes (5′ end COI sequences) with linked morphological characters for seven wasp species, with three identified to species level (Closterocerus mirabilis Edwards & La Salle, Trigonogastrella parasitica (Girault), and Zagrammosoma latilineatum Ubaidillah) and four identified to genus (Aprostocetus sp., Asecodes sp., Opius sp. 1, and Opius sp. 2). Phylogenetic analyses suggest C. pubicornis , D. isaea , H. varicornis, and O. cinerariae are likely cryptic species complexes. Neochrysocharis formosa and Aprostocetus sp. specimens were infected with Rickettsia. Five other species (Cl. mirabilis , D. isaea, H. varicornis, Opius sp. 1, and Opius sp. 2) were infected with Wolbachia , while two endosymbionts (Rickettsia and Wolbachia) co-infected N. okazakii. Three species of polyphagous Liriomyza leafminers (Diptera: Agromyzidae), Liriomyza huidobrensis, L. sativae, and L. trifolii, are internationally significant pests of vegetable and nursery crops that have each been recently detected on the Australian mainland. Due to the early stages of these invasions in Australia, it is unclear how climatic conditions are likely to support and potentially restrict the distribution of these species as they expand into novel ranges and threaten agricultural production regions. Additionally, it is unclear how natural enemies, particularly parasitoid wasps, will mitigate the impacts of these pests. Here, we predicted the future establishment potential of L. huidobrensis, L. sativae and L. trifolii in Australia, as well as two cosmopolitan parasitoid wasps known to provide control of the flies in both field and glasshouse settings, Diglyphus isaea (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Hemiptarsenus varicornis (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). Global distribution data spanning 42 countries were compiled and used to validate a process‐based model of establishment potential based on intrinsic population growth rates. The modelling approach successfully captured the international distribution of the three Liriomyza species based on environmental variables and predicted the high suitability of non‐occupied ranges in Australia. The largely unfilled climatic niche available to these pests demonstrates the early stages of their Australian invasions and highlights locations where vegetable production regions are at particular risk. In addition to Australia, our results highlight many regions globally where L. sativae, L. trifolii and L. huidobrensis have the potential to spread in the future. Within Australia, D. isaea and H. varicornis are predicted to have a large spatial and seasonal overlap with each Liriomyza species and thus are expected to influence the future spread of these pests and play an important role in local pest management programs. Fopius arisanus is a parasitoid of Bactrocera fruit flies. In sub‐tropical Australia, it can cause >30% parasitism of Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni. There has been minimal research effort globally, and none in Australia, to determine how the abundance of this species can be maintained and increased through conservation biological control. We carried out three research activities aimed at conserving this species in a landscape: (i) testing mesh sizes for augmentoria, devices into which fallen fruit can be placed that capture emergent flies while allowing parasitoid release; (ii) investigation of the suitability of wild tobacco, Solanum mauritianum, and wild tobacco fly, Bactrocera cacuminata, as a non‐crop refuge for the parasitoid; and (iii) the value of floral resources for companion planting to increase carbohydrate sources. We determined that a mesh size of approximately 2 mm2 retained near 100% of fruit flies while releasing ~90% of parasitoids. A readily obtainable 50% shade cloth maintained a mesh pore of this size and was confirmed as suitable for making augmentoria. In South East Queensland, the wild tobacco/wild tobacco fly system was demonstrated to host F. arisanus continuously through the year, with an annual parasitism rate of 31%, peaking in the spring at 60%. A second fruit fly parasitoid, Diachasmimorpha kraussii, was also collected from this system, but at lower levels. Fopius arisanus were able to move >120 m from a wild tobacco patch to parasitise fruit fly‐infested fruit. None of five floral resources trialled increased wasp longevity beyond the mean of 5.3 days achieved by a water‐only control. When five additional fruit juice/fruit pulp resources were tested, only one increased wasp longevity, by 1.3 days, over the water‐only control. In contrast, wasps fed on honey and water survived for a mean of nearly 40 days. We thus concluded that in the field F. arisanus does not gain its nutritional needs from either flowers or fruit. Augmentoria offer an easily scalable tool, suitable for backyard growers through to commercial producers, which provides the control benefits of crop hygiene while not disrupting the parasitoid cycle. Where wild tobacco can be maintained without impacting the quality of farm habitat, it has great potential as a year‐round reservoir of the wasp. Two new genera, Striastigmus, gen. nov., and Vitreostigmus, gen. nov., as well as three new species, S. bicoloratus, sp. nov., V. maculatus, sp. nov., and V. kangarooislandi, sp. nov., are described from Australia. Miracinae are a small subfamily of parasitoid wasps that are under‐represented in collections and that have yet to be formally recorded from Australia. Bayesian and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses were performed using the barcoding region of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) from 11 miracine specimens collected throughout Australia, along with extralimital miracine COI sequences from the Barcode of Life Database (BOLD). Of 14 miracine sequences from Australia, 11 distinct species were identified at a 2% pairwise difference threshold. Four of these species, for which female specimens were available for morphological examination, are here described: Mirax arcisensis Slater‐Baker & Fagan‐Jeffries sp. nov., Mirax caelicus Slater‐Baker & Fagan‐Jeffries sp. nov., Mirax cowellensis Slater‐Baker & Fagan‐Jeffries sp. nov. and Mirax trianguliceps Slater‐Baker & Fagan‐Jeffries sp. nov. Although specimens are apparently rare in collections, these results suggest that the continent may have a much larger endemic miracine fauna and highlights the need for additional work on the subfamily in Australia. Further studies on the taxonomy and biology of Australian miracines could have important implications for conservation and may reveal opportunities for biological control strategies against leaf‐mining pests. Opiine braconids are parasitoids of the immature stages of frugivorous tephritids. The female wasp lays her eggs into the eggs or larvae of the fruit fly host, where the immature wasp develops before emerging as a next‐generation adult from the now dead host pupal case. In support of a new generation of Australian fruit fly parasitoid research, this paper comprehensively reviews what is known about the Australian fruit fly infesting opiines. Based on the most recent taxonomic revision 11 fruit fly infesting opiine species are documented to occur in Australia, but we consider as doubtful the record for Diachasmimorpha longicaudata and consider the record for Fopius illusorius to be tentative without further collections. We identify that the systematics and taxonomy of the Australian native fruit fly infesting opiines are in urgent need of further work. The history of fruit fly biological control in Australia is comprehensively reviewed, including the export of native Australian opiines for fruit fly control elsewhere in the world. Australia was actively involved in three major classical biological control programmes against fruit flies from the turn of the 1900s until the mid‐1960s. Despite the introduction of 11 opiine species, plus numerous other natural enemies, only Fopius arisanus established in eastern Australia, where in South‐east Queensland it can now cause between 30 and 40% mean parasitism. In addition to the exotic F. arisanus, the native species Diachasmimorpha kraussii and Diachasmimorpha tryoni also cause fruit fly parasitism in agriculturally important crops: both species have also been liberated widely outside of Australia for fruit fly control. Other Australian opiines have not been reared from flies infesting commercial crops and appear biologically restricted to the fruits and environs of Australian east‐coast rainforests. The biology literature for D. tryoni and D. kraussii is comprehensively reviewed, while for F. arisanus, already reviewed elsewhere, key literature only is covered. Forward looking, we consider the potential for inoculative or inundative releases of opiines in areas where they do not currently occur to be good, while conservation biological control may help to increase the impacts of parasitoids in areas where they are already established. Opiine braconids include natural enemies of tephritid fruit flies, and interest in their greater utilisation for fruit fly control is growing. However, there is a lack of basic data on the prevalence and impact of these wasps for most regions of Australia. We sampled fruit fly host fruits from urbanised and peri‐urban locations of south‐east Queensland and reared out parasitoids and their host flies to determine the regional parasitoid community and how parasitism varied across time and habitat type. A total of 4969 fruits were collected from which 21 277 tephritid puparia were obtained. Of 12 601 fruit flies that emerged, the Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni, was the dominant species. A total of 5736 parasitoids, representing four species, were recovered from both suburban and peri‐urban sites. For all samples combined, the average parasitism rate was 30%. The exotic, egg–larval–pupal parasitoid Fopius arisanus represented 81% of the parasitoids collected and was recovered from all of the 13 host fruit species sampled. The second most common species, the native larval–pupal parasitoid, Diachasmimorpha kraussii, represented 15% of recovered parasitoids and was collected from a smaller range of host fruit species. The remaining two parasitoids, Diachasmimorpha tryoni and Psyttalia fijiensis, were rare in samples. Parasitoid infestation was highly variable across samples, with higher rates of parasitism observed from October to May. A targeted field experiment to measure differences in parasitism by D. kraussii between urban and peri‐urban habitats detected no variation in the abundance of D. kraussii across habitats, a result consistent with the general survey. The data show that for south‐east Queensland, parasitoids are a significant fruit fly mortality factor in both peri‐urban and urban landscapes. Five new species of bees are described from the Quinkan region of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia: Austrothurgus nanussp. nov. (Megachilidae), Nomia (Paulynomia) eburatasp. nov. (Halictidae), Leioproctus (Protomorpha) quinkanensissp. nov., Chrysocolletes loripessp. nov., Chrysocolletesaureussp. nov. (Colletidae). A sixth species, Chrysocolletes doreyisp. nov. (Colletidae), is described from Walker Creek, East of Karumba in the Gulf Country, Queensland. Most descriptions are associated with DNA‐barcodes. Aphid parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) were surveyed within grain production landscapes in Victoria, Australia, between 2017 and 2018, as well as more sporadically nationwide between 2016 and 2019. In addition, Aphidiinae records were collated from insect depositories around Australia and online databases. The 5525 specimens recorded constituted a total of 23 species and seven genera. Diaeretiella rapae (M'Intosh) was the most common species, representing more than 70% of all Aphidiinae recorded. This species also showed a greater northerly geographical range than other Aphidiinae. During sampling between 2017 and 2019, Aphidiinae were reared from mummies to ascertain host–parasitoid relationships. Diaeretiella rapae was again the most commonly reared parasitoid, although parasitoid preference varied with aphid host and between states and territories. An illustrated dichotomous key to Australian Aphidiinae in grain production landscapes is provided for the 11 species sampled in our field surveys. This is the first comprehensive review of Aphidiinae sampled within Australia in over two decades. Knowledge about the diversity and distribution of these parasitoids is important for understanding their impact on current and future invasions of aphid species. In addition, understanding the interactions between grain aphids and their associated parasitoids will further support the inclusion of parasitoid wasps into integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Globalisation has increased the occurrence of species being introduced outside of their natural range. The African carder bee, Pseudoanthidium (Immanthidium) repetitum (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), is one such species. P. repetititum was first recorded in Australia in 2000 in Queensland (north-east Australia), and rapidly spread down the east coast of Australia, and by 2015 was reported to be a common component of bee assemblages in urban community gardens in Victoria (southern Australia). Here, I report the first occurrences of this species in Western Australia, on the other side of the continent, representing a major expansion of the distribution of the species. Thus far there are three confirmed and one unconfirmed localities where this species has been seen, all localised to the Mandurah region in residential areas of Western Australia. Female specimens were collected from a garden in Halls Head, where it was observed to be abundant. Other bees, both native and the introduced European honeybee, were foraging alongside it. The occurrence of P. repetitum represents a major expansion in its distribution. It remains rare and localised; however, given known negative impacts of introduced species on native fauna and flora, especially in Australia, vigilance is required to monitor this species. The African carder bee, Pseudoanthidium (Immanthidium) repetitum (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), is an introduced species in Australia. It was first reported in 2000 and rapidly spread across the east coast. This paper reports the first observations of P. repetitum on the other side of the continent in Western Australia, representing a major range expansion. In southwestern Australia, outbreaks of cerambycids have been associated with infestation of drying and stressed trees. Felled timber provides an abundant habitat for a variety of subcortical beetles where their development can be modified by attack from natural enemies, including parasitoids. There are a variety of parasitoid wasps of cerambycids native to Australia, yet their effectiveness in controlling the larval performance of borers has been little studied. Approximately 700 Eucalyptus trees felled to realign a forest road provided an opportunity to determine how a mass of drying logs influences borer infestation rates and whether parasitoid wasps were effective in controlling borer survival. The native borer Coptocercus rubripes (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) caused an extensive infestation of fallen trees at the clearfell site. These infestations were subsequently limited by the direct effect of parasitism from the native braconid wasps Callibracon limbatus and Syngaster lepidus emerging from a single hole in a white cocoon. The effects of parasitism showed inverse density dependency where high borer larval densities increased the chances of borer larval survival. The absence of parasitism in caged logs promoted high borer larval densities and greatly improved adult borer survival, and while this increased the demand for sapwood resources, it promoted early adult borer emergence. Control by native braconid wasps of high infestations of Co. rubripes borers attacking drying and stressed trees limits adult borer emergence and has the potential to partially regulate borer populations. The Trachypetinae (type genus Trachypetus Guérin de Méneville) comprise seven species of large‐bodied wasps in three genera (Cercobarcon Tobias, Megalohelcon Turner and Trachypetus) endemic to continental Australia. Historically they have been variously treated, as members of the Helconinae in the case of Megalohelcon, or as separate subfamilies (Cercobarconinae and Trachypetinae). Some 25 years ago they were united in a single subfamily, the Trachypetinae, based on a number of characters. Although there has been conflicting evidence from morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies as to how best to treat the group, there has been a growing consensus that they fall outside the rest of the Braconidae, although taxon sampling has been a limiting factor for molecular studies. We generated a molecular dataset comprising five gene fragments (nuclear 28S ribosomal rDNA, nuclear 18S, elongation factor 1‐alpha, mitochondrial 16S rDNA, and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1) for a taxonomically broad range of Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, trachypetines and outgroup hymenopterans including the first molecular data for the trachypetines Cercobarcon and Trachypetus obtained using specially designed internal primers. Molecular and combined molecular and morphological analyses confirm the monophyly of the Trachypetinae and robustly place them as sister to the Braconidae. Detailed morphological analysis including newly recognized characters shows that trachypetines lack several synapomorphies that define the Braconidae, and that they possess a number of symplesiomorphies absent from this family but found in some ichneumonids. We conclude that family‐level status is warranted for the group based on both molecular and morphological criteria, and hence we propose the new family, Trachypetidae Schulz stat.n. (type genus Trachypetus Guérin de Méneville), for it. As a result, the remaining extant Braconidae become clearly defined based on synapomorphies not present in Trachypetidae stat.n. A new species of encyrtid wasp, Metaphycus macadamiae Polaszek & Noyes sp. n., (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae: Encyrtinae) is described as a solitary endoparasitoid of the invasive macadamia felted coccid, Acanthococcus ironsidei (Hemiptera: Eriococcidae) in Hawaii. This parasitoid is native to Australia, and the species description is based on material collected from a Macadamia integrifolia Maiden & Betche (Proteaceae) plantation in New South Wales, Australia, the native region of the host tree and insect. The species in the subgenus Amegilla (Asaropoda) are revised. Species delineation was decided based on diagnostic morphological characters as well as an incomplete phylogeny based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 sequence data. Strong support was obtained for separating the Australian species of Amegilla into the three subgenera previously proposed on the basis of morphology. The subgenus Asaropoda was found to comprise 21 species, including ten new species: A. albiclypeata Leijs, sp. nov., A. aurantia Leijs, sp. nov., A. batleyi Leijs, sp. nov., A. crenata Leijs, sp. nov., A. griseocincta Leijs, sp. nov., A. incognita Leijs, sp. nov., A. nitidiventris Leijs, sp. nov., A. scoparia Leijs, sp. nov., A. xylocopoides Leijs, sp. nov., and A. youngi Leijs, sp. nov. The subspecies A. preissi frogatti is raised to species level, and 16 new synonymies are proposed. Keys to the species of both sexes and descriptions or redescriptions are provided. The vegetable leafminer, Liriomyza sativae Blanchard, poses a risk to vegetable and nursery production in mainland Australia since established in Cape York in 2015. Effective control overseas depends on maximising the impact of natural enemies. Problems with polyphagous Liriomyza pest species typically result from the destruction of their parasitoids by excessive use of non‐selective insecticides. Field studies are reviewed to identify parasitoid species involved in the biological control of L. sativae in open‐air and glasshouse production internationally and to assess the current knowledge of parasitoids of agromyzids in Australia. Overseas, invading Liriomyza populations have frequently been exploited by endemic parasitoids (often found on non‐pest agromyzid species), and non‐crop hosts have played a role as reservoirs of these parasitoids. The few published Australian field studies on the occurrence of agromyzid flies and their parasitoids show a large community of wasps attacking agromyzids, with species mainly from the Eulophidae, Pteromalidae and Braconidae. The most abundant recorded species are two cosmopolitan eulophid species, Hemiptarsenus varicornis (Girault) and Diglyphus isaea (Walker), and four Australian species: two eulophid species, Zagrammosoma latilineatum Ubaidillah and Closterocerus mirabilis Edwards & La Salle, one pteromalid species, Trigonogastrella sp., and one braconid species, Opius cinerariae Fischer, for which there is little biological information. One deficiency in the known assemblage in Australia is the absence of parasitoids from the Eucoilinae (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), a subfamily with several abundant species attacking agromyzids overseas. The composition and impact of the endemic parasitoid assemblage in Australia on populations of L. sativae needs to be assessed adequately in the field before the importation of additional exotic parasitoid species is contemplated. Overseas, two species, D. isaea and Dacnusa sibirica Telenga, are reared commercially for augmentative biological control, although the relatively high cost of production has restricted their release to protected cropping situations. The Masoninae (type genus Masona van Achterberg) is a widespread but seldom collected group of morphologically aberrant tiny (body length 2 mm or less) wasps that have always been considered as a subfamily of Braconidae, albeit on little supporting evidence. Discovery of a fully winged female of Masona from remote Australia has enabled a reassessment of its relationships. This specimen yielded sequence data for the nuclear 28S and 18S rDNA genes, the barcoding fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 and the mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene. These were analysed separately and together, along with representatives of Braconidae and Ichneumonidae. Maximum likelihood analyses of all four genes separately and combined concur that Masona is nested within the Ichneumonidae and, therefore, is not a member of Braconidae. This is also supported by the position of the sternaulus low on mesopleuron, absence of fore wing vein (RS + M)a (though the great reduction in wing venation makes further interpretation problematic) and the articulated junction of metasomal tergites 2 and 3. On balance, molecular analyses place Masona basally among the ophioniformes lineage of Ichneumonidae. Formal description of the Australian species as Masona timpaynei Quicke sp. n. and a revised diagnosis of Masoninae are provided in S1 together with illustration of the holotype. The citrus gall wasp (CGW), Bruchophagus fellis (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), is a serious pest of citrus in southern Australia. Severe infestations can result in yield loss and a reduction in fruit size. Several parasitoid species attack CGW, with Megastigmus brevivalvus (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Torymidae) (MBV) being the dominant species. Both CGW and MBV are univoltine and adult wasps emerge from galls in the spring. Median emergence of MBV lags behind that of CGW by 2–3 weeks. We modelled the effect of spray timing for foliar-applied, non-systemic insecticides on the relative exposures of CGW and MBV based on their emergence distributions and estimated the optimal spray timing that maximises the control of CGW while minimising the impact on MBV. Three temporal emergence distribution scenarios for the two species and 28 periods of residual insecticide activity were considered in the investigation. The results showed that the optimal spray timing was always before the peak emergence of CGW. Depending on the residual activity of the insecticide, the optimal spray date pre-dated the peak emergence of CGW by 1–24 days, with longer lead times for insecticides with longer residual activity. By contrast, the optimal spray date varied little across the different emergence scenarios, suggesting that the results apply over a wide range of locations and seasons. A single insecticide application at the optimal timing may not guarantee satisfactory control of CGW. When the residual activity of the insecticide is short, multiple applications with a combined residual activity of 16 days are needed to ensure insecticide contact with ≥90% of all CGW that emerge in a season. • Median emergence of the citrus gall wasp occurs 2–3 weeks before that of its primary parasitoid. • Effects of spray timing on the relative exposure of the gall wasp and the parasitoid were modelled. • Optimal spray timing is 1–24 days before peak host emergence. • Appropriate spray scheduling can expose most gall wasps to insecticides whilst minimising impacts on the parasitoid. Each life stage of an insect faces the challenge of various mortality factors. Through experimental and observational studies, we use those mortality agents to our advantage to control outbreaks of pest insects. The processionary caterpillar Ochrogaster lunifer Herrich‐Schäffer, 1855, is a widespread native moth in Australia that defoliates host trees and causes medical problems in humans and animals. Anastatus fuligispina (Girault 1939) is an egg parasitoid described from eggs of O. lunifer in eastern Australia nearly 80 years ago for which few life history traits are known. This is the first study to investigate the life history of A. fuligispina, factors associated with parasitism levels in O. lunifer egg masses and its impacts on egg mortality. We found that parasitism level was related to the total number of eggs in an O. lunifer egg mass, with higher parasitism occurring in masses with fewer eggs. The inaccessible physical structure of the O. lunifer egg mass by layering and encasing eggs with other eggs and the searching efficiency of the parasitoid are possible key factors. Other variables such as exposure time in the field, host tree species and number of undeveloped eggs in the egg mass did not affect the level of parasitism. In an effort to improve surveillance capacity for the exotic red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, a lateral flow immunoassay (LFA) was recently evaluated by Biosecurity Queensland staff in Australia. The purpose of the research was to assess the ability of the fire ant LFA to discriminate S. invicta from ants found in Australia and to conduct the first field evaluation of the test. In addition to S. invicta, 36 species of ants, collected mainly from Queensland, were evaluated by the LFA, including species from the Dolichoderinae (n = 7), Formicinae (n = 13), Myrmeciinae (n = 1), Myrmicinae (n = 11), Ponerinae (n = 3) and Pseudomyrmicinae (n = 1) subfamilies. The fire ant LFA test correctly identified S. invicta in every instance. No cross reactivity was observed in the other ant species. Field tests by staff previously unfamiliar with the test resulted in suggestions for improving ant collection and manipulation. Calixomeria lasallei gen. n. et sp. n. is described as a new genus and species of Sceliotrachelinae. Calixomeria most closely resembles genera of the Aphanomerus-cluster but possesses several characters that readily separate it from other sceliotracheline genera. E piphyas postvittana ( Walker, 1863), or light brown apple moth ( LBAM), is a highly polyphagous native Australian species and a major insect pest in Australian vineyards. D olichogenidea tasmanica ( Cameron, 1912) is the most abundant parasitoid of the larval stages of LBAM. The prime objective of our study was to determine the parasitism success of D . tasmanica on different larval stages of E . postvittana. Additionally, we aimed to find out if larval head capsule width could be used to determine the instar number by examining the variability in head capsule size of each instar of LBAM and the effect of rearing temperature on larval head capsule size. To determine which of the first three larval stages of LBAM parasitised is most effectively by D . tasmanica, choice and no-choice tests were conducted in a wind tunnel. Head capsule widths varied with rearing temperature, especially in the final fifth or sixth instar. We showed that the ranges of head capsule widths overlaps between successive instars three through six, which makes it impossible to distinguish these instars of LBAM using head capsule size alone. We showed that first, second and third instars of LBAM are parasitised by D . tasmanica. No-choice and choice tests revealed that there are significant differences in parasitism among the three susceptible instars, with the highest percentage of parasitism found in second instars in no-choice and choice tests (65.1% and 65.8%, respectively) compared with first instars (61.1% and 45.1%) and third instars (27.3% and 37.5%). Wasps developed faster in third instars, but the wasp female's size was not significantly different among the instars attacked. Dolichogenidea tasmanica (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a solitary endoparasitoid of light brown apple moth (LBAM) and other tortricids that is native to Australia. The foraging behavior of single and multiple female D. tasmanica in the presence of patchily-distributed hosts was observed in wind tunnels. Results show that D. tasmanica was able to choose those patches which initially offered the highest oviposition rate. Single foragers spent the longest times on patches with higher host densities, but they visited patches with lower host densities sooner in presence of other foragers. The overall rate of parasitism was equalized across patches at the end of the experiment, which indicates that hosts were equally susceptible to attack by D. tasmanica , irrespective of their local density. A decrease in the searching efficiency of individual parasitoids with increasing parasitoid density was evidence of interference among female D. tasmanica . Nonlinear regression indicates that there was a consistent pattern of mutual interference as wasp density increased and the area of discovery and mutual interference coefficients of Hassell and Varley’s (1969) model of parasitoid foraging were estimated as Q = 0.45 and m = 0.526, respectively. Females chose to visit patches that were not previously visited, which suggests that repellent chemicals were produced by attacked hosts or marking pheromones were deposited by searching females on patches they have visited. A new species of Opiinae, Diachasma dentatum Shirley, Restuccia & Ly, is described from Australia. This species is similar to several other Australian opiines previously described or included in the genus Diachasma, but the mandibles are unusually broad, nearly exodont. Notable differences between Australian and Palaearctic Diachasma are discussed. Diachasma tasmaniae Fischer, 1995, originally described from Tasmania and New South Wales, is newly recorded from Victoria. The subfamily Cheloninae has not been studied in any detail for Australia for more than 80 years, and yet they are an important group of parasitoids of lepidopteran larvae, with many undescribed species, some of which cannot be easily assigned to genera. As a precursor to undertaking taxonomic revisions of specific genera for the Australian fauna, this study assesses the likely species richness of the fauna, provides a key to genera to facilitate their identification, provides a checklist of species and notes on their taxonomy, and discusses their biology. In so doing, we recognise two new genera, Austroascogaster gen. nov., represented by four species, A. gloriousensis sp. nov. ( Queensland), A. mellosa sp. nov. (type species) ( Queensland, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia), A. nigripropodea sp. nov. ( Queensland) and A. varia sp. nov. ( Queensland, Indonesia), and Phanaustrotoma gen. nov. represented by P. alba sp. nov. ( Queensland) and P. pallina sp. nov. (type species) ( Queensland). Following this study, the Australian chelonine fauna comprises 47 species, of which 43 are endemic to the continent; two species, Chelonus phthorimaeae Gahan and Chelonus curvimaculatus Cameron, have been successfully introduced as biological control agents against the potato tuber moth ( Phthorimaea operculella ( Zeller); Gelechiidae), while three species represent questionable records as there is no reliable evidence that they ever established on the continent, viz, Ascogaster quadridentata Wesmael , Chelonus blackburni Blackburn & Cameron and Phanerotoma hendecasisella Cameron. Based on its description and biology, Phanerotoma coccinellae Girault ( Queensland) is undoubtedly not a member of the Cheloninae; however, the holotype of this species is apparently lost. The Australasian braconid wasp fauna has an apparent high proportion of reduced-winged and wingless species compared with other regions, although the reasons for this are not particularly clear. In this study, five such new species of Doryctinae, Dendrosotinus ( Gildoria) chathamicus sp. nov. ( Chatham Is, New Zealand), Neorhaconotus julieae sp. nov. ( Australia), Ontsira naumanni sp. nov. ( Australia), Spathiomorpha jenningsi sp. nov. ( Australia), and Spathius thorpei sp. nov. ( New Zealand), are described and illustrated from the region. The first four of these represent the first records of flightless species in their respective genera. Spathius pedestris Wesmael is recorded from the region ( New Zealand) for the first time and has undoubtedly been introduced there, having been reared from the common furniture beetle ( Anobiidae), Anobium punctatum De Geer. Painted apple moth Teia anartoides Walker (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), a native to Australia, was discovered in Auckland, New Zealand in late 1999 and eradicated by 2006. It was recognised in 2002 that biological control would be the most effective long-term control strategy if eradication was unsuccessful, and a search was initiated for potential biocontrol agents in Australia. In 2003, autumn and spring surveys were undertaken in Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia of the guild of parasitoid natural enemies of T. anartoides. Eggs, larvae and pupae were collected and held to rear out any parasitoids. In addition, localised searches were made in Queensland in late 2003-early 2004 and laboratory-reared juvenile stages of T. anartoides were released for recapture in both Victoria and Queensland. Acacia dealbata Link (Fabales: Fabaceae) was the main plant from which T. anartoides was recovered, followed by apple. Most T. anartoides samples were collected from Victoria and Tasmania. Eighteen species from 13 genera of egg, larval and pupal parasitoids were reared and included Diptera (Tachinidae) and Hymenoptera (Braconidae, Encyrtidae, Eulophidae and Ichneumonidae). Of the seven Hymenopteran genera recovered from the larval stage, the most common in Victoria and Tasmania was a previously unidentified larval parasitoid Cotesia Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) sp. Echthromorpha intricatoria (Fabricius) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was the dominant pupal parasitoid. The survey showed that the parasitoid complex associated with T. anartoides is structurally very similar to that on other pest Lymantriidae in the northern hemisphere such as gypsy moth ( Lymantria dispar L.) The European aphid species, Macrosiphum hellebori, the hellebore aphid, is recorded from Australia, having been found in Melbourne, Victoria and in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, colonising ornamental hellebores, Helleborus species (Ranunculaceae). Insect associates of M. hellebori are recorded, including the hymenopterous primary parasite Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) (Braconidae: Aphidiinae). A new species of euphorine braconid, Syntretus trigonaphagus sp. nov., is described and illustrated. This is the first Australian Syntretus species to be described and the first record of braconids parasitising Trigona Jurine stingless bees. Egg-laying by adults and emergence of larvae from the host Trigona carbonaria is detailed. Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) is a serious pest of a number of horticultural crops including grapes in Australia and New Zealand. This study brings together information on the parasitoid complex associated with E. postvittana that previously was fragmented and largely inaccessible. We include species reared during a 3-year study of the parasitoids of E. postvittana in the vineyards of the Coonawarra region, South Australia, material from several Australian agricultural insect collections and records from the literature. An illustrated key is presented for 25 species of parasitoids and hyperparasitoids associated with E. postvittana, along with information on the taxonomy, identification, distribution and biology of each species. Taxa newly recorded from this host are Perilampus sp. (Perilampidae), and six species of Ichneumonidae: Euceros sp., Labium sp., Netelia sp., Plectochorus sp., Temalucha minuta (Morley) and Eriborus epiphyas sp. n., the latter species being described in full. The braconid genus Syngaster Brullé is revised and nine species are recognized, six of which are new: S. lepidus Brullé, S. quadricolor (Cameron), S. variegatus (Szépligeti), S. crypticus sp. nov., S. hirtus sp. nov., S. neoguineensis sp. nov., S. polychromus sp. nov., S. stevensi sp. nov., and S. tricolor sp. nov. Host data are only available for S. lepidus which is a parasitoid of cerambycid larvae, notably Phoracantha spp. associated with temperate, subtropical and Mediterranean eucalypt forests in eastern and southern Australia. Other than S. lepidus , S. polychromus is the only other species known from Australia (south‐east Queensland), the remaining seven species all being restricted to mainland New Guinea. Preliminary phylogenetic analysis indicates the genus comprises two species groups with S. lepidus and S. quadricolor forming a polytomy with these. The citrus gall wasp, Bruchophagus fellis, is a serious pest of citrus in southeast Australia and the ability to accurately predict its highly synchronised adult emergence periods is critical for its effective management. We monitored emergence of the citrus gall wasp for six years during 2010–2017 in southern Australia, yielding a total of 22 site-by-year datasets from two citrus production regions and multiple citrus varieties. For each dataset, the proportions of emerged wasps on different monitoring dates were related to the corresponding degree-days using a 2-parameter Weibull function. The two degree-day parameters, the lower development threshold temperature and biofix date, were estimated at 8 °C and August 1 respectively by cross-validation of a series of candidate values using the sum of squared differences between the predicted and observed median emergence dates as the performance indicator. According to the final fitted Weibull function, 5, 50, and 95% emergence occur when 560, 723 and 835 degree-days above 8 °C have accumulated after August 1. The predicted median emergence dates differed from the corresponding observed median emergence dates by an average of 2.8 days across the 22 datasets. The average deviations for 5 and 95% emergence were slightly larger, at five and four days, respectively. Observed degree-days for median emergence did not differ significantly between the two citrus production regions, indicating there is no need for separate degree-day models for different regions. Poinciana looper, Pericyma cruegeri (Butler) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an endemic Australasian defoliator of iconic Poinciana (Delonix regia) trees. Poincianas, despite being exotic, are of significant urban value in subtropical and tropical Australia for their attractive form, flamboyant blooms and popular utility as shade and amenity trees. Poinciana looper larvae can cause extensive defoliation, reduced flowering, and become a nuisance to residents as caterpillars drop from trees, while in an urban setting, chemical control options are limited. The suitability of P. cruegeri eggs as a host for the commercially-available egg parasitoids Trichogramma carverae , Trichogramma pretiosum and Trichogramma nr. finiculatum was evaluated to determine their potential as augmentative biological control agents. One female of each of these Trichogramma species was exposed to ten P. cruegeri eggs and left for one hour to oviposit. The suitability of looper eggs as a host for each wasp species was measured by time for initial host acceptance, subsequent development time, emergence rates, egg mortality and sex ratios. All three Trichogramma species successfully utilised P. cruegeri eggs as hosts, causing an average 58 % reduction in P. cruegeri larval emergence. Female wasps generally accepted P. cruegeri eggs within one minute of introduction, and this did not differ between parasitoid species. Development time differed significantly between all three species, with T. pretiosum emerging after 14 days, and T. carverae requiring 18 days for development. Significantly more T. nr. finiculatum emerged compared with the other two species, partially due to multiple wasps emerging per host egg. P. cruegeri is a suitable host for all three Trichogramma species, but further research is required prior to embarking on a biocontrol program using these species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
