Block mode of teaching, also called intensive mode of teaching, has received great recognition and interest from education sector. This mode of teaching is a compressed style of teaching in which classes are delivered in an intensive period of time. Block mode teaching has been found to have potential to enhance student performance. Although previous researchers have uncovered some factors which impact successful implementation of block mode, there is a lack of research which investigates the contributing factors that influence students' adoption of block mode and scrutinizes different facilitators and barriers to students' acceptance and engagement with the block mode of teaching. This study seeks to fill the gap by examining the impact of online learning management system design and usage as well as student perceptions on student utilization of block mode. This study adopts a positivist research approach and uses an online questionnaire as the data collection technique. Data were collected from undergraduate students studying in block mode at Victoria University. The results generally confirmed the positive impact of both groups of determinants on students' block mode utilization.

Coping with evolution and the changes it brings to the workplace remains a major concern for organizational leaders. This study explores the hotspots, trends, and future directions of the field of organizational unlearning to complement the extant research. A bibliometric analysis based on the literature collected by the Web of Science database was used to categorize or cluster different authors, their countries, institutions and different keywords (cooperation among authors, co-citation, co-occurrence of keywords), to discover their uniqueness or determine the relationship between them while using CiteSpace software to draw knowledge graphs and then results. This study advances the debate on sustainable knowledge acquisition in organizations and its interaction with organizational unlearning. It directly aids the process of radical change in workplace learning and training models and provides a clear view of the previous literature on organizational unlearning by laying a solid foundation for future research in the field of learning.

This paper presents findings from a campus climate survey conducted at an Australian university. Unprecedented compositional diversity now exists in higher education, with students enrolled from different religious, socio-economic, geographic, and cultural backgrounds. Despite this diversity, little research has been conducted into the ways that different student groups experience university, including marginalised and 'hidden' groups such as LGBTIQA+ students. The survey aimed to uncover the impact of diversity on student experiences, including the extent to which students associated with others from different backgrounds, the extent to which their own views and beliefs were challenged, and the extent to which they felt safe on campus. Findings suggest a need for more targeted research, particularly into the experiences of marginalised groups, and for reform of both institutional policy and curriculum. Further, we found that students are frequently thinking about identity, diversity, and bias, and their own voices need to be elevated within institutional strategies.

As the university student body becomes more diversified and students' lives less linear, student retention carries increased importance for universities, including the conversion of deferrers and the re-enrolment of leave-taking students. This paper is based on a broader research project which explored national patterns of deferral and leave of absence in Australia and the policies and strategies for re-engaging the students who defer or take leave. Through a mixed research design, the study explores the extent to which students are positioned at the centre of deferral and leave of absence policy, informed by relationship marketing concepts. This study suggests that many universities have moved towards greater consideration of student perspectives and individualised approaches to building a trustworthy and supportive relationship with deferral and leave-taking students, based on data analytics of individual students' information and circumstances. Despite such efforts, there remain both limitations and tensions within these approaches.

Core concepts in physiology, designed by physiology educators to promote improved learning and teaching, have existed for over a decade. This study aimed to investigate the extent to which a set of 15 core concepts of physiology (developed by Michael and McFarland, U.S.-based educators) are reflected in the learning outcomes (LOs) of units (subjects) comprising physiology curricula in Australian universities. From publicly accessible online information, we identified 17 Australian universities that offered a physiology major for undergraduate degree students and downloaded 788 LOs from the 166 units that comprised the majors. Each LO was blindly mapped against the 15 core concepts by 8 physiology educators from 3 Australian universities. Additionally, text-matching software was employed to match keywords and phrases (identified as descriptors of the 15 core concepts) against the LOs. The frequency of individual words and two-word phrases for each core concept was calculated and ranked. There was variability in rating LOs for the same university among academic mappers; nevertheless, many of the 15 core concepts did not appear to be adequately covered in the LOs. Two core concepts most matched manually were in the top three most mapped by the software. These were, from most common, structure/function and interdependence. Our findings suggest a lack of alignment of LOs with the core concepts across Australian physiology curricula. This highlights the need for Australia-wide agreement on a set of core concepts in physiology as the first step in collaboratively improving assessment and learning and teaching practice in physiology.

Higher education institutions have recently transitioned from face-to-face to online teaching and learning environments. However, academic staff lack sufficient training in applying emotional intelligence (EI) skills and strategies in online learning environments. Although literature addressing academics' EI is sparse, some studies have suggested that lecturers' EI greatly influences teaching and learning. This study used the concept of EI to understand students' perceptions of how lecturers' EI impacted their learning and engagement in an online learning environment. We conducted four online focus group interviews of 14 students pursuing a bachelor's degree at two campuses of an Australian university, one in Melbourne and the other in Malaysia. Four main themes were identified using thematic analysis. Students discussed their perceptions and experiences on (a) vulnerabilities, coping and empathy; (b) relationships with lecturers, trust and safety; (c) communication, tone and voice; and (d) managing emotions of lecturers. Our findings suggest that lecturers' EI impacted students' learning and engagement in online learning spaces. However, the impact differs between Australia and Malaysia due to cultural differences. Drawing on the findings, we present online education good practices grounded in the theory of EI. Lecturers delivering online courses should consider employing these practices for effective teaching.

Australian higher education participation continues to expand, yet in unequal ways. Regional, rural, and remote (RRR) student participation is stubbornly stalled, despite sustained research and policy initiatives to support these cohorts. To address this complex issue, we interviewed 10 RRR principals in Queensland and Victoria to explore specific challenges that face RRR communities, as well as collate strategies and solutions. Our findings highlighted the importance of leveraging and developing local knowledge and expertise to equip students with careers education, as well as the need to promote a positive narrative about RRR community life. A key theme that emerged from participants was the need to dispel the myth that students needed to leave their communities to achieve their goals or find career success. The findings from this paper point to a need for educational outreach programs to continue to develop context-specific, locally informed programs and support that align with RRR communities' values and ways of life.

For a long time, Australian English and culture have not been viewed in China as an equal to its American and British counterpart. This is reflected in teachers' choice of destination when it comes to English teaching and learning resources. This paper examines Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers' perceptions of the contents and pedagogical design of Australian-based digital English learning resources through an interactive process. The teachers' beliefs regarding language teaching and learning as well as materials selection were challenged due to the application of current technologies in the language education. A total of 24 EFL teachers from different universities across China participated in focus group interviews. The teachers worked with website designers and content writers to refine the design of the English language learning (ELL) website and digital English resources. Data showed that respondent teachers were highly receptive towards the newly designed ELL website as well as its content that were developed by incorporating the key features of a popular ELL website proposed by previous studies (Kettle, Yuan, Luke, Ewing & Shen, 2012; Shen, Yuan & Ewing, 2015; Yuan & Shen, 2013, 2014). In the interactive process of this study, participating teachers learned to appreciate Australian-based digital English resources, particularly the Australian culture, language and pedagogy embedded. A reflective process was also triggered in which Chinese EFL teachers showed willingness to re-examine their instructional practices and utilize the digital resources by adopting a more learner-centered pedagogy for optimal learning outcomes.

In large-scale low-stake assessment such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), students may skip items (missingness) which are within their ability to complete. The detection and taking care of these noneffortful responses, as a measure of test-taking motivation, is an important issue in modern psychometric models. Traditional approaches based on questionnaires and item response theory may have different limitations. In the present research, we proposed a new way by directly using "participant-own-defined" missing item information (user missingness) in a zero-inflated Poisson model. An empirical study using the PISA 2015 data (eight representative economies in two cultures) and another simulation study were conducted to validate our new approach. Results indicated that our model could successfully capture test-taking motivation. We also found that the Confucian students had lower user missingness irrespective of item positions as compared with their Western counterparts.

Background: Strict patient isolation in hospital is associated with adverse health outcomes. However, there is a lack of high‐quality evidence for effective interventions to improve safety and quality of care for these patients. Aims: To identify patient reported areas for improvement in the care of patients in hospital isolation and to determine the feasibility of collecting patient reported outcomes using validated tools. Methods: Design: An exploratory mixed methods study. Setting: A major metropolitan teaching hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Participants: Patients in hospital isolation for transmissible infections. Data collection: Data were collected by (1) phone interviews with patients in isolation and (2) seven validated measurement tools to assess cognition, loneliness, nutritional status, quality of life, anxiety and depression and physical activity. Data were collected between September and December 2021. Data analysis: Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively including participant characteristics and outcome data. Results: Participants identified areas for improvement including activities to decrease boredom, more contact with staff to mitigate loneliness and increase comfort care, and formalised communication about clinical treatment and discharge plan. Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms were happier to be alone. There were operational challenges within the health service including delays and miscommunication. Only 70% of the participants completed all questionnaires. Conclusion: This study identified areas for improvement in care of patients in isolation and demonstrated that collecting patient reported outcomes using validated tools was feasible. The results of this research will inform development of an intervention to manage adverse effects. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: Patients in hospital isolation require additional consideration to ensure that their needs are met to avoid adverse outcomes. Organised, temporary labour migration from the Global South to wealthier countries is a growing and sometimes problematic phenomenon. This article considers Timorese involvement in the Australian Seasonal Workers Program (SWP) in relation to this trend. Drawing primarily on semi‐structured interviews and participant observation undertaken among an interconnected group of 50 Timorese seasonal workers across Australia and Timor‐Leste between 2016 and 2021, we found that geographical and social isolation and limited leisure all proved challenges while working in Australia. In some cases, it appears that the workers were able to lean upon their own social networks and local churches as a way to mitigate these challenges. We argue that, in considering the welfare of workers in temporary migration programs such as the SWP, it is important to be aware of the role played by informal groups that are formally outside the scheme itself. Labour migration from Timor‐Leste to Australia has advantages for both sending and receiving countries but is also fraught with a range of challenges that are as yet unresolved. Context Omnipod DASH Insulin Management System is a tubeless insulin pump that overcomes the physical inconveniences of conventional tubed insulin pump therapy (IPT). Objective We compared treatment satisfaction with Omnipod DASH System to usual care (multiple daily injections [MDIs] or tubed IPT) in adults with type 1 diabetes using self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG). Methods Adults with type 1 diabetes on MDI (n = 40) or IPT (n = 25) from 4 diabetes centers in Australia were randomly assigned in a 1:1 nonblinded manner to Omnipod DASH System (Omnipod group) or continue usual care (Usual Care group) for 12 weeks, followed by a further 12-week extension during which all participants used the device. The primary outcome was treatment satisfaction assessed by change in Diabetes Technology Questionnaire "current" (ΔDTQ-current) score at 12 weeks (study end). Secondary outcomes included ΔDTQ-current following extension and other participant-reported outcomes (PROs) measuring quality of life, burden of disease treatment, and glycemic and device-related outcomes at 12 weeks (study end) and 24 weeks (end extension). Results Treatment satisfaction improved more in the Omnipod group vs the Usual Care group (ΔDTQ-current score of 16.4 [21.2] vs 0.0 [12.8]; P <.001) at study end. Significantly greater improvements in other PROs and glycated hemoglobin A1c were also observed. Improvements in DTQ-current and other PROs comparing study end and end extension were similar. While percentage in time in range change from baseline did not differ at study end (−2.0 [12.7] %), it was significantly greater at end extension (5.6 [10.9] %; P =.016). Conclusion The Omnipod DASH System resulted in greater treatment satisfaction at 12 weeks in adults with type 1 diabetes using SMBG that was sustained after 24 weeks of device use without compromising sleep quality and fear of hypoglycemia. Phylogenetic analyses and morphological examination confirmed two new species in the tropical polypore genus Tropicoporus, T. oceanianus and T. zuzaneae, from Australia and tropical Asia, respectively. A phylogenetic analysis based on the two DNA markers including the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the large subunit (nLSU) gene shows that these two new species form two independent lineages nested in the genus Tropicoporus. T. oceanianus is characterized by perennial and ungulate basidiomata, the occasional presence of hymenial setae, a trimitic hyphal structure in the context and a dimitic hyphal system in the trama, and broadly ellipsoid to subglobose basidiospores measuring 5.2–6 × 4–5 μm. T. zuzaneae is characterized by perennial and resupinate basidiomata with distinct receding margin, glancing pores, very thin to almost lacking subiculum, a dimitic hyphal structure, the absence of any setal elements, broadly ellipsoid to subglobose basidiospores measuring 3.8–4.9 × 3–4.2 µm. Since universities' commitment to internationalisation has been increasing, instruments for measuring institutional internationalisation performance are urgently needed to monitor and evaluate the progress made about internationalisation. Although efforts have been made to develop various tools, an internationally applicable instrument for universities to measure and compare their internationalisation performance remains missing. This study attempted to develop an indicator framework of such kind to fill the gap. A total of 182 administrative staff and 17 policymakers from 17 flagship universities in Australia, Singapore and China were consulted in order to establish the framework. The study resulted in a set of 15 indicators that captures six key dimensions of university internationalisation. It attempts to cover internationalisation in its widest possible sense with practical number of indicators. This study also contributes to the knowledge body of developing measurement for university internationalisation by reflecting on the fundamental challenge of measuring the phenomenon.

Background: The Australian Foundation Residency Program prepares new-to-hospital and early career pharmacists for extended roles and advanced pharmacy practice. An understanding of the outcomes residents perceive they achieve through completion of a residency and what supports them in their achievements is limited. Aim: To explore pharmacists’ experiences during their residency and what they perceive as its outcomes and their achievements. Method: Focus groups and interviews were conducted and recorded with 12 early career or new-to-hospital pharmacists who recently completed a residency program in an Australian hospital. Recordings were transcribed and analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Ethical approval was granted by the University of Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee (Reference no: 2021/HE001225) and the study conforms to the Australian Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. Informed consent was obtained from all participants via the distribution of project information sheets and completion of written consent forms. Results: Five distinct themes were generated from participants’ discussions of their experiences and achievements throughout their residency. The outcomes and achievements they described included gaining the confidence to take on new and challenging roles as well as advancing their career by developing a deeper understanding of their role and potential in the healthcare system. Skill development was accelerated by the structure and assessment requirements of the residency program and by support from mentors, which positively influenced their attitudes towards feedback and competency assessments. Participants reflected on the differences between postgraduate university-based learning and workplace-based learning and saw benefits in both. Conclusion: The residency was reported to offer a structured and supportive training pathway for pharmacists in the early stages of their hospital pharmacy career. Completion of residency facilitates pharmacists’ skill development and a deeper understanding of their roles. Dedicated and qualified mentorship and routine networking events between peers and past residents enhance these experiences and outcomes for residents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Verticillium wilt (VW) is an important and widespread disease of cotton and once established is long-lived and difficult to manage. In Australia, the non-defoliating pathotype of Verticillium dahliae is the most common, and extremely virulent. Breeding cotton varieties with increased VW resistance is the most economical and effective method of controlling this disease and is greatly aided by understanding the genetics of resistance. This study aimed to investigate VW resistance in 240 F7 recombinant inbred lines (RIL) derived from a cross between MCU-5, which has good resistance, and Siokra 1–4, which is susceptible. Using a controlled environment bioassay, we found that resistance based on plant survival or shoot biomass was complex but with major contributions from chromosomes D03 and D09, with genomic prediction analysis estimating a prediction accuracy of 0.73 based on survival scores compared to 0.36 for shoot biomass. Transcriptome analysis of MCU-5 and Siokra 1–4 roots uninfected or infected with V. dahliae revealed that the two cultivars displayed very different root transcriptomes and responded differently to V. dahliae infection. Ninety-nine differentially expressed genes were located in the two mapped resistance regions and so are potential candidates for further identifying the genes responsible for VW resistance. Numerous genetic loci and several functionally characterized genes have been linked to determination of lint percentage (lint%), one of the most important cotton yield components, but we still know little about the major genetic components underlying lint%. Here, we first linked the genetic loci containing MYB25-like_At and HD1_At to the fiberless seed trait of 'SL1-7-1' and found that MYB25-like_At and HD1_At were very lowly expressed in 'SL1-7-1' ovules during fiber initiation. We then dissected the genetic components involved in determination of lint% using segregating populations derived from crosses of fuzzless mutants and intermediate segregants with different lint%, which not only confirmed the HD1_At locus but identified the HD1_Dt locus as being the major genetic components contributing to fiber initiation and lint%. The segregating populations also allowed us to evaluate the relative contributions of MYB25-like_At , MYB25-like_Dt , HD1_At , and HD1_Dt to lint%. Haplotype analysis of an Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) population with 723 accessions (including 81 fuzzless seed accessions) showed that lint% of the accessions with the LP allele (higher lint%) at MYB25-like_At , MYB25-like_Dt , or HD1_At was significantly higher than that with the lp allele (lower lint%). The lint% of the Upland cotton accessions with 3 or 4 LP alleles at MYB25-like and HD1 was significantly higher than that with 2 LP alleles. The results prompted us to propose a strategy for breeding high-yielding cotton varieties, i.e. pyramiding the LP alleles of MYB25-like and HD1 with new lint% LP alleles without negative impact on seed size and fiber quality. This design-based study examines the creation and development of audio-visual Chinese language teaching and learning materials for Australian schools by incorporating users' feedback and content writers' input that emerged in the designing process. Data were collected from workshop feedback of two groups of Chinese-language teachers from primary and secondary schools in Australia and content writers' reflections of their understanding and transformation of their understanding of Chinese teaching and learning materials for Australian schools. It is found that a reciprocal process between the users and content writers can effectively facilitate the creation and development of user-oriented teaching and learning materials which are sensitive to the local curriculum needs. Based on teachers' comments and content writers' ideas, appropriate audio-visual Chinese language teaching and learning materials need to be tailor-made with a range of topics focusing on current China. A strong pedagogical scaffolding needs to be embedded into the materials and tasks, supporting students' language learning in the classroom. The creation of Chinese texts needs to employ simple yet authentic language structures on topics of relevance to students' life. Findings also indicate that audio-visual resources need to be accompanied with quality images and subtitles. All audio recordings should be spoken by Chinese native speakers, who are fluent in standard Mandarin. Additionally, it is suggested that an interactive learning platform could effectively enhance peer learning.

Internationalisation has become a central concern in today's higher education and has been developed as an explicit institutional-wide priority. However, as many researchers argue the meaning of internationalisation remains ambiguous and unclear. The majority of existing studies on the phenomenon are case based or focus on the divergence of intuitional motives and strategies. With all has been known about the differences, a shared construct has yet been established to theoretically conceptualise the phenomenon. This article explored university practitioners' perceptions of internationalisation, in order to construct the phenomenon. To construct university internationalisation, by and large, means to identify the comparable elements of the phenomenon across individual cases and contexts. Specifically, university policy-makers from 17 flagship universities in Australia, Singapore and China were involved in the investigation. The findings show considerable commonalities in the major motive that drives institutional internationalisation, the strategies that universities develop for internationalisation and the approach to implement internationalisation strategies. These similarities enable the establishment of an integrated construct of university internationalisation. This is not to say that university internationalisation is understood and implemented in the same manner in universities across different countries. The observed divergences are also discussed and linked to the influential contextual factors. The findings of this study contribute to the theorising of the widely discussed phenomenon by answering the key question that in what way university internationalisation can be constructed.

Recently, global epidemic models that use climatological factors have been proposed to explain influenza activities for both temperate and tropical regions. In this paper, these global models were extended by including interactions of climatological factors. This study was aimed to estimate the relative benefits of such interactions in explaining the global influenza epidemics. The effects of four climatological factors on laboratory-confirmed influenza cases were investigated, i.e., weekly temperature, precipitation, absolute humidity and relative humidity. It was found that countries in Europe and Australia have higher forecast skill, indicating the stronger relationship of influenza with climatological factors, than regions in other continents. The influenza activities of 47 (83%) countries can be explained with a closer match using multi-factor interactions along with original factors than only using the original factors. The temperate countries are characterized by the interaction of factors of temperature and absolute/relative humidity. In contrast, the interaction of factors of precipitation and absolute/relative humidity are dominant in tropical countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Australia has experienced increasing number of heatwave events (HWEs) in recent decades. This study aims to examine key synoptic features of austral summer HWEs over Australia during 1950/1951–2019/2020. Based on ERA5‐reanalysis and rotated empirical orthogonal functions, HWEs in Australia are categorized into four types according to where they often occur together: East Australia (EA), North Australia (NA), West Australia (WA) and Southeast Australia (SEA). Our results reveal that while anomalous anticyclones at 500 hPa level are the typical synoptic circulations responsible for HWEs of each subregion, their specific mechanisms differ between subregions. The atmospheric heat budget at 850 hPa level shows that anomalous diabatic heating promotes the onset of HWEs in each subregion. While anomalous vertical advection and adiabatic heating due to the anomalous subsidence play an important role in maintaining HWEs till their demise in NA, they only help trigger HWEs in EA, SEA and WA. Our results also suggest that anomalous advection of climatological mean temperature is important to both the onset and persistence of HWEs in EA and SEA, while it only helps sustain (trigger) HWEs in NA (WA). The advection of anomalous temperature also acts to trigger HWEs in EA, SEA and WA. On the surface, upward long‐wave radiation and sensible heat flux contribute to the development of HWEs, whereas both of them are reduced in SEA due to the enhanced anomalous cyclones near the surface and the decreased land–air temperature difference. These findings help improve understanding of the synoptic characteristics and distinctive mechanisms of HWEs in different subregions of Australia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION The World Health Organization recommends banning all forms of e-cigarette advertising, promotion, and sponsorship. The aims of the present study were to: 1) examine young people's exposure to e-cigarette advertising across a wide range of media in four diverse countries; and 2) identify any association between the number of different types of media exposures and e-cigarette use. METHODS A cross-sectional online survey was administered to approximately 1000 people aged 15-30 years in Australia, China, India, and the United Kingdom (n=4107). The survey assessed demographic characteristics, e-cigarette and tobacco use, numbers of friends and family members who vape, and exposure to multiple forms of e-cigarette advertising (e.g. television, radio, print, and various types of social media). Descriptive analyses were conducted on those who had heard of e-cigarettes (n=3095, significance threshold p<0.001) and a logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with e-cigarette ever use (significance threshold p<0.05). RESULTS The majority (85%) of respondents who had heard of e-cigarettes reported being exposed to e-cigarette advertising on at least one type of media, and the average number of types of media to which respondents were exposed was 5 (range: 0-17). The number of media types was significantly associated with ever use of e-cigarettes (OR=1.05; 95% CI: 1.02-1.08, p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS Despite advertising restrictions in place in all four countries, large majorities of young people reported being exposed to e-cigarette advertising. Social media and advertising on/around vape shops and other retailers appear to be key exposure locations. Urgent attention is needed to address these forms of exposure given their apparent association with e-cigarette use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The unprecedented SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has further constrained the budgets of governments worldwide for delivering their much-needed infrastructure. Consequently, public-private partnerships (PPPs), with the private sector's investment and ingenuity, would appear to be an increasingly popular alternative. Value for money (VfM) has become the major criterion for evaluating PPPs against the traditional public sector procurement and, however, is plagued with controversy. Hence, it is important that governments compare and contrast their practice with similar and disparate bodies to engender best practice. This paper, therefore, aims to understand governments' assessment context and provide a cross-continental comparison of their VfM assessment. Design/methodology/approach: Faced with different domestic contexts (e.g. aging infrastructure, population growth, and competing demands on finance), governments tend to place different emphases when undertaking the VfM assessment. In line with the theory of boundary spanning, a cross-continental comparison is conducted between three of the most noticeable PPP markets (i.e. the United Kingdom, Australia and China) about their VfM assessment. The institutional level is interpreted by a social, economic and political framework, and the methodological level is elucidated through a qualitative and quantitative VfM assessment. Findings: There are individual institutional characteristics that have shaped the way each country assesses VfM. For the methodological level, we identify that: (1) these global markets use a public sector comparator as the benchmark in VfM assessment; (2) ambiguous qualitative assessment is conducted only against PPPs to strengthen their policy development; (3) Australia's priority is in service provision whereas that of the UK and China is project finance and production; and (4) all markets are seeking an amelioration of existing controversial VfM assessments so that purported VfM relates to project lifecycles. As such, an option framework is proposed to make headway towards a sensible selection of infrastructure procurement approaches in the post COVID-19 era. Originality/value: This study addresses a current void of enhancing the decision-making process for using PPPs within today's changing environment and then opens up an avenue for future empirical research to examine the option framework and ensuing VfM decisions. In recent years, there has been a considerable expansion of deployments of portable seismic stations across Australia, which have been analysed by receiver function or autocorrelation methods to extract estimates of Moho depth. An ongoing program of full-crustal reflection profiles has now provided more than 25 000 km of reflection transects that have been interpreted for Moho structure. The Moho data set is further augmented by extensive marine reflection results. These new data sources have been combined with earlier refraction and receiver function results to provide full continental coverage, though some desert areas remain with limited sampling. The dense sampling of the Moho indicates the presence of rapid changes in Moho depth, and so, the Moho surface has been constructed using an approach that allows different weighting and spatial influence depending on the nature of the estimate. The inclusion of Moho results from continental-wide gravity inversion with low weighting helps to resolve the continent-ocean transition and to provide additional control in the least sampled zones. The refined distribution indicates the presence of widespread smaller-scale variations in Moho structure. Strong lateral contrasts in crustal thickness remain, but some have become more subdued with improved sampling of critical areas. The main differences from earlier results lie in previously poorly sampled regions around the Lake Eyre Basin, where additional passive seismic results indicate somewhat thicker crust though still with a strong contrast in crustal thickness to the cratonic zone to the west. In Australia, peanuts are mainly grown in Queensland with tropical and subtropical climates. The most common foliar disease that poses a severe threat to quality peanut production is late leaf spot (LLS). Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely investigated for various plant trait estimations. The existing works on UAV-based remote sensing have achieved promising results for crop disease estimation using a mean or a threshold value to represent the plot-level image data, but these methods might be insufficient to capture the distribution of pixels within a plot. This study proposes two new methods, namely measurement index (MI) and coefficient of variation (CV), for LLS disease estimation on peanuts. We first investigated the relationship between the UAV-based multispectral vegetation indices (VIs) and the LLS disease scores at the late growth stages of peanuts. We then compared the performances of the proposed MI and CV-based methods with the threshold and mean-based methods for LLS disease estimation. The results showed that the MI-based method achieved the highest coefficient of determination and the lowest error for five of the six chosen VIs whereas the CV-based method performed the best for simple ratio (SR) index among the four methods. By considering the strengths and weaknesses of each method, we finally proposed a cooperative scheme based on the MI, the CV and the mean-based methods for automatic disease estimation, demonstrated by applying this scheme to the LLS estimation in peanuts. Background We model the potential impact of relaxing current nicotine vaping product (NVP) restrictions on public health in Australia. Aims and Methods A Restricted NVP Scenario was first developed to project current smoking and vaping rates, where a U.S. smoking model was calibrated to recent Australian trends. To model less restrictive NVP policies, a Permissive NVP Scenario applied rates of switching from smoking to vaping, initiation into NVP and cigarette use, and cessation from smoking and vaping based on U.S. trends. The model measures vaping risk relative to the excess mortality rate of smoking. The public health impacts are measured as the difference between smoking- and vaping-attributable deaths (SVADs) and life years lost (LYLs) in the Restricted and Permissive NVP Scenarios. Sensitivity analysis is conducted regarding the NVP excess risk and other factors. Results Assuming an NVP excess risk of 5% that of smoking, 104.2 thousand SVADs (7.7% reduction) and 2.05 million LYLs (17.3% reduction) are averted during 2017–2080 in the Permissive NVP Scenario compared to the Restricted NVP Scenario. Assuming 40% NVP excess risk, 70 thousand SVADs and 1.2 million LYLs are averted. The impact is sensitive to the rate at which smokers switch to NVPs and quit smoking, and relatively insensitive to the smoking initiation and NVP initiation and cessation rates. Conclusions The model suggests the potential for public health gains to be achieved by relaxing NVP access regulations. However, the model would benefit from better information regarding the impact of NVPs on smoking under a relaxation of current restrictions. Implications Australia has implemented a strong array of cigarette-oriented policies, but has restricted access to NVPs. The Smoking and Vaping Model offers a framework for modeling hypothetical policy scenarios. The Australian model shows the potential for public health gains by maintaining cigarette-oriented policies while relaxing the current restrictive NVP policy. Modeling results under a permissive NVP policy are particularly sensitive to the estimated rates of smoking cessation and switching to vaping, which are not well established and will likely depend on past and future cigarette-oriented policies and the specific NVP policies implemented in Australia. An outbreak of viral encephalitis caused by a Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) genotype IV infection occurred in Australia between 2021 and 2022. A total of 47 cases and seven deaths were reported as of November 2022. This is the first outbreak of human viral encephalitis caused by JEV GIV since it was first isolated in Indonesia in the late 1970s. Here, a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis based on the whole genome sequences of JEVs revealed it emerged 1037 years ago (95% HPD: 463 to 2100 years). The evolutionary order of JEV genotypes is as follows: GV, GIII, GII, GI, and GIV. The JEV GIV emerged 122 years ago (95% HPD: 57–233) and is the youngest viral lineage. The mean substitution rate of the JEV GIV lineage was 1.145 × 10−3 (95% HPD values, 9.55 × 10−4, 1.35 × 10−3), belonging to rapidly evolving viruses. A series of amino acid mutations with the changes of physico-chemical properties located in the functional important domains within the core and E proteins distinguished emerging GIV isolates from old ones. These results demonstrate the JEV GIV is the youngest JEV genotype at a rapid evolution stage and has good host/vector adaptability for introduction to non-endemic areas. Energy storage plays a crucial role in the safe and stable operation of power systems under high renewable energy penetration. Unlike conventional energy sources, the special physical characteristics of battery energy storage make it challenging to apply in practice. Some countries have been developing battery energy storage for a long time, and it is worthwhile to learn from the policies and market mechanisms for the development of battery energy storage to clear the obstacles for large-scale development and participation in the power market. This study focuses on the current status of battery energy storage, development policies, and key mechanisms for participating in the market and summarizes the practical experiences of the US, China, Australia, and the UK in terms of policies and market mechanisms. Then, the challenges of the current development of battery energy storage are analyzed, and suggestions are made in terms of policies and market mechanisms, so as to provide a reference for the development of battery energy storage in other countries or regions. The critical metal germanium (Ge) is recovered as a by-product of mining other commodities, such as zinc and thermal coal. We investigated the Ge incorporation mechanism in sphalerite synthesized under hydrothermal conditions like those of sediment-hosted Zn-Pb deposits. Sphalerite ± galena ± barite formed via reactions of Ge ± Fe ± Cu ± Ba-bearing brine with calcite and reduced sulfur at 200 °C and water vapor-saturated pressure. The products were examined using backscattered electron (BSE) imaging, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) and micro-X-ray absorption near-edge structure (μ-XANES). We show that Ge(IV) is incorporated into sphalerite and bonded with reduced sulfur, both in the experimental sphalerite and in natural zinc ore samples from the MacArthur River Zn-Pb-Ag deposits, Australia. Copper K-edge XANES spectra show that copper occurs as Cu(I) in the experimental sphalerite, consistent with previous studies on Cu in natural sphalerite. The experiments reveal that Ge(IV) substitution in sphalerite occurs with and without the presence of other metal ions (e.g., Cu(I)), indicating that Ge(IV) substitution can be accommodated via charge balance by vacancies as well as by coupled substitution in the synthesized sphalerite. Ab initio quantum chemical simulations confirm that sphalerite can readily accommodate Ge, with the crystal structure and average Zn-S, Zn-Zn, S-S distances retained when replacing > 3 mol% of the Zn sites with Ge(IV), Ge(II), Cu(I) or Fe(II), demonstrating the resilience and flexibility of the sphalerite crystal structure. These Ge incorporation mechanisms explain the previous observations of multiple ways of Ge incorporation in natural sphalerite. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has gained momentum in behavioural health interventions in recent years. However, a limited number of studies use or apply such methodologies in the early detection of depression. A large population needing psychological—intervention is left unidentified due to barriers such as cost, location, stigma and a global shortage of health workers. Therefore, it is essential to develop a mass screening integrative approach that can identify people with depression at its early stage to avoid a potential crisis. Objectives: This study aims to understand the feasibility and efficacy of using AI-enabled chatbots in the early detection of depression. Methods: We use Dialogflow as a conversation interface to build a Depression Analysisn (DEPRA) chatbot. A structured and authoritative early detection depression interview guide, which contains 27 questions combining the structured interview guide for the Hamilton Depression Scale (SIGH-D) and the inventory of depressive symptomatology (IDS-C), underpins the design of the conversation flow. To attain better accuracy and a wide variety of responses, we train Dialogflow with the utterances collected from a focus group of 10 people. The occupation of the focus group members included academics and HDR candidates who are conscious, vigilant and have a clear understanding of the questions. In addition, DEPRA is integrated with a social media platform to provide practical access to all the participants. For the non-clinical trial, we recruited 50 participants aged between 18 and 80 from across Australia. To evaluate the practicability and performance of DEPRA, we also asked participants to submit a user satisfaction survey at the end of the conversation. Results: A sample of 50 participants, with an average age of 34.7 years, completed this non-clinical trial. More than half of the participants (54%) are male and the major ethnicities are Asian (63%), Middle Eastern (25%), and others 12%. The first group comprises professional academic staff and HDR candidates, the second and third groups comprise relatives, friends, and volunteers who were recruited via social media promotions. DEPRA uses two scientific scoring systems, QIDS-SR and IDS-SR to verify the results of early depression detection. As the results indicate, both scoring systems return a similar outcome with slight variations for different depression levels. According to IDS-SR, 30% of participants were healthy, 14% mild, 22% moderate, 14% severe, and 20% very severe. QIDS-SR suggests 32% were healthy, 18% mild, 10% moderate, 18% severe, and 22% very severe. Furthermore, the overall satisfaction rate of using DEPRA was 79% indicating that the participants had a high rate of user satisfaction and engagement. Conclusion: DEPRA shows promises as a feasible option for developing a mass screening integrated approach for early detection of depression. Although the chatbot is not intended to replace the functionality of mental health professionals, it does show promise as a means of assisting with automation and concealed communication with verified scoring systems. Anthropogenic activities have drastically impacted the climate system since the Industrial Revolution. However, to what extent anthropogenic emissions influence the cloud droplet number concentration (Nd), the critical parameter for understanding aerosol‐cloud interactions, is poorly known on the hemispheric scale due to the considerable retrieval uncertainty. We employed multiple widely used Nd retrieval sampling methods to evaluate the long‐term trend in Nd contrast (ΔNd(NH‐SH)) between the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and Southern Hemisphere (SH). Here we show that the ΔNd(NH‐SH) was halved from 2003 to 2020 using different sampling methods and channels, even though the range of magnitudes of ΔNd(NH‐SH) from different retrieval sampling methods is large. Such dramatic changes in ΔNd(NH‐SH) are dominated by the significantly decreased Nd over the NH (∼20%) due to emission reductions compared to the relatively stable and pristine nature of the SH. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) and aerosol index (AI) correlate poorly with Nd based on long‐term trends, even though they replicate the contrast trends. This poor correlation is partly contributed by stratospheric smoke from wildfires in Australia that had little influence on Nd in the SH. The northwest Atlantic shows the largest contribution, ∼38%, to the Nd trend, whereas the northwest Pacific dominates the change in AOD and AI, contributing more than 60% to AOD and ∼50% to the AI trend in the NH. Our results imply that emission reductions significantly reduced ΔNd(NH‐SH) and provide strong observational evidence that anthropogenic activities have extensively altered liquid clouds in the NH in the last two decades. Under the background of emission reductions over the past two decades, this study used global satellite observations to explore the long‐term (2003–2020) trend in Nd over the ocean and its hemispheric contrast (ΔNd(NH‐SH)) between the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. We found that Nd decreased ∼20% over the Northern Hemisphere, but no clear Nd trend was found over the Southern Hemisphere. As a result, the fractional change (defined as the trend divided by its climatology) of ΔNd(NH‐SH) is about −60% from 2003 to 2020. We further quantify the regional contribution and found that the northwest Atlantic shows the largest contribution, ∼38%, to the Nd trend over the Northern Hemisphere. Our results provide strong observational evidence that anthropogenic activities have extensively modified the microphysical properties of liquid clouds in the Northern Hemisphere over the past two decades. Ionospheric delay is one of the most problematic errors in single-frequency (SF) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data processing. Global/regional ionospheric maps (GIM/RIM) are thus vitally important for positioning users. Given the coexistence of multi-GNSS, the integration of quad-constellation observations is essential for improving the distribution of ionospheric penetration points (IPPs) and increasing redundant observations compared with the existing GIM products from the IGS analysis center. In this paper, quad-constellation (GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/BDS) observations are applied to set up the RIM over Australia with uncombined precise point positioning (UC-PPP) and a low-order spherical harmonic function. The generated RIMs are then introduced to ionosphere-corrected (IC) and ionosphere-weighted (IW) single-frequency PPP (IC-SFPPP and IW-SFPPP) to verify their performance in terms of positioning accuracy and convergence time. Taking the CODE GIM as a reference, the results show that the mean root mean square (RMS) of VTEC differences is 0.867 TECUs, and the quad-constellation RIM (referred as 'RIM4′) can improve the RMS of RIMs compared to single-constellation mode at the edge of regional experiment area. The application of the RIM4 in the BDS IC-SFPPP results in a 18.38% improvement (from 100.47 cm to 82.00 cm) of 3D positioning RMS compared to the CODE-GIMs, whereas 35.36% enhancement (from 115.92 cm to 74.62 cm) of 3D positioning RMS is achievable during an active ionospheric period. Moreover, if the criterion of the convergence time is defined as when positioning errors in the horizontal and vertical directions are less than 0.3 m and 0.6 m for 20 consecutive epochs, the IW-SFPPP can significantly speed up the convergence time compared to the uncombined SFPPP; that is, the convergence time is reduced by 52.7% (from 37 min to 17.5 min), 37.2% (from 72.5 min to 45.5 min), and 37.1% (from 62.0 min to 39.0 min) in the north, east and up direction, respectively, at the 68% confidence level. Simple Summary: Mud dauber wasps, Sceliphron formosum, are native to Australia and commonly found in urban areas where they build mud nests on human constructions. Mud nests serve as brooding rooms for their larvae, in which paralysed spiders are provided as food. In this study, over 650 mud nests of S. formosum were collected, analysed and examined. We first identified the spider taxa that were provided as larval food and then reared the nests that contained larvae, prepupal larvae and pupae of S. formosum and unknown insects. By identifying the insects that emerged as adults, we were able to establish the interspecific interactions and reveal that not only do S. formosum larvae use the nests, but parasitoids and any opportunistic insects also utilize the empty nests as shelters. Overall, we documented the prey preference of S. formosum, as well as 16 families and 23 species of insects from Hymenoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera that are associated with this mud nest life, suggesting a complicated role these mud nests play in an ecosystem. (1) Background: Sceliphron is a genus of sphecid wasps that build mud nests for reproduction. These wasps prey exclusively on spiders, and commonly inhabit human constructions. The nesting behaviour and prey selection of many Sceliphron species are well studied, but despite being a common insect in urban areas, Sceliphron formosum has never been comprehensively studied. (2) Methods: In this study, over 650 mud nests of S. formosum were collected, analysed and examined to establish prey preference, nest ecology and interspecific interactions. Prey preference was evaluated in terms of abundance, diversity and morphology. Preference in terms of morphology was estimated using body length to leg span ratio (BLR). (3) Results: S. formosum largely preys on ground-hunting spiders, among which Salticidae represented the most collected prey. In terms of prey size, S. formosum captures prey with a large BLR. Moreover, an unexpected discovery showed that the enclosed mud nests provide a micro niche that supports a wide variety of insects. Sixteen families and 23 species of insects were found associated with the use of mud nests, comprising the insect orders Hymenoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera. These included important pollinators, new species and native species not recorded in the past 20 years of mud dauber wasp research. We propose the potential of S. formosum as a keystone species, due to its ability to provide a micro niche for native species in urban areas. We also discuss how these results contribute to our knowledge on the role of insects in urban ecosystems and their significance in relation to conservation, ecology and biodiversity studies. The realization that ancient biomolecules are preserved in "fossil" samples has revolutionized archaeological science. Protein sequences survive longer than DNA, but their phylogenetic resolution is inferior; therefore, careful assessment of the research questions is required. Here, we show the potential of ancient proteins preserved in Pleistocene eggshell in addressing a longstanding controversy in human and animal evolution: the identity of the extinct bird that laid large eggs which were exploited by Australia's indigenous people. The eggs had been originally attributed to the iconic extinct flightless bird Genyornis newtoni (?Dromornithidae, Galloanseres) and were subsequently dated to before 50 ± 5 ka by Miller et al. [Nat. Commun. 7, 10496 (2016)]. This was taken to represent the likely extinction date for this endemic megafaunal species and thus implied a role of humans in its demise. A contrasting hypothesis, according to which the eggs were laid by a large mound-builder megapode (Megapodiidae, Galliformes), would therefore acquit humans of their responsibility in the extinction of Genyornis. Ancient protein sequences were reconstructed and used to assess the evolutionary proximity of the undetermined eggshell to extant birds, rejecting the megapode hypothesis. Authentic ancient DNA could not be confirmed from these highly degraded samples, but morphometric data also support the attribution of the eggshell to Genyornis. When used in triangulation to address well-defined hypotheses, paleoproteomics is a powerful tool for reconstructing the evolutionary history in ancient samples. As a dominant climate mode of the southeast Indian Ocean, Ningaloo Niño/Niña has paramount impacts on regional climate and marine ecosystems. Using outputs from the latest phase of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), we have systematically evaluated the simulation of Ningaloo Niño/Niña in the state‐of‐the‐art coupled models. Eighteen out of 28 CMIP6 models well reproduce the spatial pattern and seasonality of Ningaloo Niño/Niña, whereas the simulated amplitudes show large spread across the models. Main processes of the oceanic and atmospheric El Niño‐Southern Oscillation teleconnections and the coastal Bjerknes feedback are successfully captured by most of the CMIP6 models, but their uncertainties in the simulation are responsible for the inter‐model difference in amplitude. The CMIP6 models are also skillful in reproducing the regional climate impacts of Ningaloo Niño/Niña. Compared to Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5, a larger fraction of models in CMIP6 well reproduce the Ningaloo Niño/Niña, which provides a good hope for projecting its future changes. More severe impacts are expected under global warming. Hence, the future projection of Ningaloo Niño/Niña is of great importance for mitigating devastating climate impacts. As a prerequisite, we need to study first whether the state‐of‐the‐art coupled general circulation models can successfully reproduce such a coastal climate mode. Using the outputs from the latest Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), we have systematically evaluated the performance in simulating the Ningaloo Niño/Niña, including its basic characteristics, generation mechanisms, and the climate impacts. The results show that most of the CMIP6 models can realistically simulate the Ningaloo Niño/Niña, which provides us with confidence in projecting its future changes under global warming.
