Active participation in the outdoors is beneficial for health and wellbeing. However, the impact of extreme weather, particularly heat, on safe participation is causing concern for organisations who lead these activities. Local mitigation strategies and acute management of heat- and sun-related illness (HSRI) are generally well understood by researchers and medical practitioners, however, cases continue to occur so further understanding of why this happens is required. This study aimed to identify the number, nature and contributory factors of HSRI in Australian led outdoor activities in order to seek opportunities for their prevention. This study presents a descriptive analysis of contributory factors to HSRI occurring during led outdoor activities. Cases were prospectively collected across 3 years (2014-2017) from a national Australian incident reporting system. Cases were included by identification of keywords linked with sun or heat exposure. From 2,015 incident cases, 48 cases were included: 25 termed heat stroke and 23 as "other adverse outcomes related to sun or heat." One in three (35%) cases occurred during outdoor walking or running, and one in four occurred while camping. A total 146 contributory factors were identified. These factors were attributed to the activity participant (e.g. competence, decision making); equipment and resources (e.g. food/drink, dehydration); and environment (e.g. hot weather.). Mild to moderate HSRI was identifiable by signs/symptoms. Contributory factors were linked to the individual participant. Potentially, these factors could be mitigated through system focused approaches. Awareness of wider responsibility for preventing HSRI should be promoted across led outdoor activities.

Skin cancer prevention efforts in Australia have increasingly incorporated a focus on protection during incidental sun exposure. This complements the long-present messages promoting protection in high-risk settings and avoidance of acute intense bouts of sun exposure. Data from two waves of a cross-sectional direct observational survey was used to assess the prevalence and correlates of N = 12,083 adolescents' and adults' sun protection behavior (arm and leg cover, hat, sunglasses, and shade cover). Individuals were observed in public outdoor settings in Melbourne, Australia during peak ultraviolet (UV) times (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) on summer weekends. Settings included pools and beaches, parks and gardens, and for the first time in 2018, outdoor streets and cafés which may capture more incidental forms of sun exposure and represent another public setting where Australians commonly spend time outdoors. Females and older adults were consistently better protected than males and adolescents. Physical activity was strongly associated with low shade cover across settings. Weather was more strongly associated with sun protection at outdoor streets/cafes and parks/gardens than at pools/beaches but use of observed sun protection (particularly arm cover and covering hat) was low across settings. Continued public education about UV risk and its relation to weather and the seasons is needed to promote the routine use of multiple forms of sun protection during outdoor activities in peak UV times, especially among males and adolescents. Findings also highlight the importance of considering activity demands of public spaces in shade planning to optimize sun protection during outdoor activities in public spaces.

Water is a special substance. Not only do humans rely on water for survival, but it is also fascinating to play with and makes a great topic to investigate. Many simple investigations can be done with water, at home or at school, to guide children's science learning. This article describes a sequence of online learning experiences that were set for Foundation-level children in Sydney NSW, during the recent school lockdown due to COVID-19. The lessons were communicated to 5-6-year-old children via the Seesaw digital app and were part of a unit on weather and water designed for children in their first year of school. Examples of student responses to these water-based learning tasks are provided.

In response to the perception that climate change is too abstract and its consequences too far-reaching for us to make a difference, recent feminist environmental humanities scholars have drawn attention to connections that can be forged by noticing the intermingling of bodies, relations, materials, places and movements in the world. Inspired by these ideas, Tonya Rooney has proposed that there is potential in working with child-weather relations as a pedagogical response to making climate change more connected and immediate for young children. Mindy Blaise and her colleagues have also shown how 'matters of fact' dominate early childhood teaching, and call for new pedagogies that attend to 'matters of concern', such as climate change. In this article the authors build on these ideas by drawing also on María Puig de la Bellacasa's suggestion that we extend our concern to 'matters of care' as an 'ethically and politically charged "practice'." The authors report on their work with educators and children in an Australian-based preschool where they have started to engage with matters of concern and matters of care to create new types of pedagogies that they call 'weathering-with pedagogies'. These are situated, experimental, embodied, relational and ethical, and, the authors suggest, reflect a practice of care, thus providing young children with new ways of responding to climate change. The authors take as their starting point Donna Haraway's invitation to 'muddy the waters' as a way to stir up the possibilities, tensions and challenges in doing such work.

In the modern era migrations are complex, multi-determined and elude vulgar mechanistic models of causality. Migrations unfold in complex ecologies involving broad features of the state -- borders, demography, economy, and society. Furthermore, historical relationships, cultural affinities, political interests, and the environment itself continue to carve the pathways of the great human migrations in the new millennium. In this article, I first introduce the most up-to-date relevant data on global migration and examine the broad features of a conceptual model framing migration in the current era of globalisation. Second, I turn to a new cartography of mass migrations flowing from unchecked climate change, environmental degradation, war, and terror. Finally, I offer a humanitarian reflection on how education must respond to the defining existential crisis of our times.

Recent curriculum introductions and revisions on a global scale have highlighted the importance of primary teachers' content knowledge in geography and the lack of research in this area (Catling, 2014). This has become a particular focus in Australia with the introduction of the "Australian Curriculum: Geography" in 2013 and the requirement for geography to be taught as a discrete subject in primary schools. The current study focuses on content common to both the Australian Curriculum: Geography and Science. The study reported in this paper adopts a mixed methods approach to explore the adequacy of pre-service primary teachers' accuracy and depth of knowledge about weather and climate. The results suggest that pre-service primary teachers hold a range of alternative conceptions about weather and climate processes and that they lack the depth of knowledge required to adequately prepare students for their studies in secondary science and geography. Implications for classroom practice and for future research are discussed.

Can community and school gardens help people learn to build social resilience to potential food shortages? We seek to address this question through an examination of the ways in which gardens can teach individual and community resiliency in times of emergency, pockets of food insecurity, and the challenges presented by climate change. We focus on the role gardens play in providing access to food and building resilience amongst school-aged children and young adults. A larger Australian PhD thesis is analyzed to provide insights to assist educators, particularly in the policy arena, who are seeking to engage with, or who already engage with, young learners in community and school gardens. While the focus is on the Australian context, we argue that our findings have international relevance.

This paper outlines a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning experience for children in the early years of school. It builds on STEM education in early childhood with a shared purpose, "to help children to explore and make sense of their world using childrelevant and appropriate contexts" (Preston, 2018 p. 137). The extended, multi-part learning experience was implemented over four one-hour lessons and formed the second half of a Foundation year unit of work that combined children's interests in riding scooters with curriculum content about weather. Children's learning about the wind is contextualised through a design problem where the force of the wind (moving air) is used to propel a scooter. This STEM experience was implemented in a school where children bring scooters to ride in the playground during break times promoting physical activity and resilience.

Research indicates an increased enrolment of students in Australian universities who are deaf or hard of hearing. However, research relating to these students' professional practicum experiences in schools as pre-service teachers of secondary education is limited, with no account of a deaf or hard of hearing pre-service teacher in the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area. This paper reports on a unique longitudinal case study of a male HPE pre-service teacher (secondary) who is deaf and enrolled in a university teacher education course in Western Australia (WA). It specifically explores the first professional practicum placement of the pre-service teacher. Data presented details the challenges and opportunities, and capacity of the pre-service teacher and teacher education institution to deliver on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. The paper presents considerations towards the inclusion of all pre-service teachers with additional needs and provides insights into course requirements previously undocumented in the academic literature.

Examines some of the ways in which nature is textualized in technocultural discourses with particular reference to the incorporation of satellite-based weather monitoring and digital imaging technologies into global consumer markets of information and entertainment. Climatic hazards are a key feature of life. It is vital that teachers are knowledgeable about these phenomena in order to develop their students' understanding of them. This study used a mixed methods approach to examine the accuracy and depth of preservice primary teachers' (n = 430) knowledge of tropical cyclones. The findings suggest that prospective primary teachers hold alternative conceptions about the causes, spatial distribution, and impacts of these phenomena and that their explanations of processes lack structural complexity and integration. Issues raised by these findings and implications for teachers' geographical knowledge and their professional standards and preservice teacher education are discussed.

Purpose: The Australian Dietary Guidelines support good health and disease prevention. Children with healthy eating habits established early in life have been shown to continue these habits into adulthood compared with those children who have poor eating habits in their younger years. The nutritional intake of many Australian children is not in accordance with the national guidelines. The reasons children make the food choices they do are unclear from the literature. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study used participatory action research methods to explore why primary school-aged children make the food choices that they do. A non-government primary school requested assistance in encouraging their children to make healthier choices from the school canteen menu. The authors gathered opinions from the children in two different ways; a group discussion during class and a "discovery day" that involved four class grades. The authors identified children's food preferences and food availability in canteens. The authors explored how the children perceived healthy foods, the importance of a healthy food environment and what criteria children use to decide what foods to buy. Findings: Children's food preferences were mostly for unhealthy foods, and these were readily available in the canteen. The perception about what foods were healthy was limited. Despite being asked to develop a "healthy" menu, the majority of choices made by the children were not healthy. Children described unhealthy choices as preferable because of taste of the food, if it was sugary, if it was quick to eat, available and cheap, the relationship of food and weather, the connection to health conditions and peer dominance. Practical Implications: This study suggests that children make their food choices based on simple concepts. The challenge lies around producing healthy options in collaboration with the school community that match the children's food choice criteria. Originality/Value: This paper provides a modern and inspiring whole school approach based on equity and empowerment of the children. Discovering why children make food choices from the children's perspective will help to present healthy options that will be more appealing for children. The methodology used to uncover why children make their food choices has also provided valuable insight into a study design that could be used to address other childhood research questions. The methodology offers an educative experience while gathering rich information directly from the children. This information can be used by the school to support children to have more control over their health and to develop behaviours to increase their health for the rest of their lives.

Climate change is one of the most significant science issues facing humanity; yet, teaching students about climate change is challenging: not only is it multidisciplinary, but also it is contentious and debated in political, social and media forums. Students need to be equipped with an understanding of climate change science to be able to participate in this discourse. The purpose of this study was to examine Western Australian high school students' understanding of climate change and the greenhouse effect, in order to identify their alternative conceptions about climate change science and provide a baseline for more effective teaching. A questionnaire designed to elicit students' understanding and alternative conceptions was completed by 438 Year 10 students (14-15 years old). A further 20 students were interviewed. Results showed that students know different features of both climate change and the greenhouse effect, however not necessarily all of them and the relationships between. Five categories of alternative conceptions were identified. The categories were (1) the greenhouse effect and the ozone layer; (2) types of greenhouse gases; (3) types of radiation; (4) weather and climate and (5) air pollution. These findings provide science educators a basis upon which to develop strategies and curriculum resources to improve their students' understanding and decision-making skills about the socioscientific issue, climate change.

This paper reports the findings of a study designed to assess 16 experienced geography teachers' epistemological beliefs about learning and teaching and their awareness of common alternative conceptions held by students. The investigation forms part of a larger study exploring the ways in which experienced geography teachers use their knowledge of students' ideas to inform instruction. The results suggest that teachers' knowledge of students' ideas and epistemological beliefs about learning and teaching are both complex and varied. Teachers with an understanding of the constructed and robust nature of students' ideas, however, are more likely to hold a nuanced, detailed and accurate knowledge of students' common alternative conceptions. The implications of these findings for professional practice are discussed together with suggestions for future research.

While Shulman argues that an important component of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) is teachers' understanding of the alternative conceptions commonly held by students, relatively little is known about what students believe about many topics in the school curriculum. This paper focuses on a content area typically featured in Geography curriculum as the first phase of a larger study designed to investigate Geography teachers' PCK. Common student conceptions of tropical cyclone causes and processes were identified using a variety of methods. Results indicate that secondary school Geography students (n = 339) hold a range of alternative conceptions related to foundational scientific principles as well as the geographical concepts of location, scale, spatial distribution, interactions and interdependence. Implications for the knowledge requirements of Geography teachers are discussed along with suggestions for future research. (Contains 6 figures and 3 tables.)

This study uses the context of the weather to explore the development of students' intuitive ideas of variation from pre-Grade 1 to Grade 9. Three aspects of understanding these intuitions associated with variation are explored in individual videotaped interviews with 73 students: explanations, suggestions of data, and graphing. The development of these three aspects across grades is explored, as well as the associations among them. Fifty-eight of the students also answered a general question on the definitions of "variation" and "variable, " and these responses are discussed and compared with responses to the weather task. The interview protocol may prove useful for teachers, particularly with younger children, to appreciate students' developing understanding of variation and provide starting points for classroom work of a more specific nature, either with respect to weather or other contextual topics.

Purpose: To examine whether awareness of the source of sun protection campaigns in New South Wales, Australia was associated with message recall and sun protection knowledge and behaviours. Design/methodology/approach: Telephone surveys of random samples (n = 800) of parents and other carers of children under 12 years of age were conducted before and after the first two campaigns and after the third campaign. Findings: Recognition of the NSW Cancer Council (NSWCC) as the message source increased after each campaign. Cross-sectional analyses revealed that after the first and third campaigns those who could identify the NSWCC were 1.4-1.7 times more likely than those who could not to demonstrate knowledge about child sun protection practices (p less than 0.05). After the first campaign those with accurate message source awareness were 1.4 times more likely to report using sunscreen or clothing to protect their children, while after campaign three this awareness was associated with a greater likelihood (OR 1.6, p less than 0.05) of using hats, sunscreen and protective clothing. Research limitations/implications: While causality cannot be determined using a cross-sectional design, the use of serial population surveys to analyse the relationship between message source awareness and sun protection knowledge and behaviours strengthens the basis for examining the role of this factor. Practical implications: Presenting a readily identifiable and credible message source is likely to enhance the impact of health campaigns and this factor should be given attention in the pre-testing of communications. Originality/value: The importance of a credible communication source has been postulated by various theorists, but this one of few studies to examine the role played this factor in a population-wide, health promotion campaign. Variation is a key concept in the study of statistics and its understanding is a crucial aspect of most statistically related tasks. This study aimed to extend and apply a hierarchy for describing students' understanding of variation that was developed in a sampling context to the context of a natural event in which variation occurs. Students aged 13 to 17 engaged in an inference task that necessitated the description of both rainfall and temperature data. The SOLO Taxonomy was used as a framework for analyzing student responses. Two cycles of Unistructural-Multistructural-Relational levels, one for qualitative descriptions and the other for quantitative descriptions, were identified in responses. Implications of the extended hierarchy for describing understanding of variation for research, teaching and assessment are outlined. (Contains 10 tables and 1 figure.)

Dirofilaria immitis is the causative agent of canine heartworm disease. We used the established heartworm development unit (HDU) principle to map the extrinsic incubation period (EIP) of D. immitis in Australia using historical weather data from 2013–2022. We found weather conditions suitable for EIP completion showed substantial seasonality and geographical variability. Whilst a considerable percentage of the Australian territory showed suitable weather conditions to always support EIP completion (17%), only 2.7% of the 2021 Australian human population lived in this region. Therefore, 97% of the population lived in an area that changed its EIP suitability within the study period. EIP completion is required prior to D. immitis transmission, meaning that infection risk of D. immitis is seasonal and location-dependent, being disrupted each year for most of the human population's dogs. We developed an online, open access tool allowing us to visualise EIP completion across Australia historically and in near real-time. A large stretch of the east coast of Australia experienced unprecedented rainfall and flooding over a two‐week period in early 2022. It is difficult to reliably estimate the likelihood of such a rare event from the relatively short observational record, so an alternative is to use data from an ensemble prediction system (e.g., a seasonal or decadal forecast system) to obtain a much larger sample of simulated weather events. This so‐called 'UNSEEN' method has been successfully applied in several scientific studies, but those studies typically rely on a single prediction system. In this study, we use data from the Decadal Climate Prediction Project to explore the model uncertainty associated with the UNSEEN method by assessing 10 different hindcast ensembles. Using the 15‐day rainfall total averaged over the river catchments impacted by the 2022 east coast event, we find that the models produce a wide range of likelihood estimates. Even after excluding a number of models that fail basic fidelity tests, estimates of the event return period ranged from 320 to 1814 years. The vast majority of models suggested the event is rarer than a standard extreme value assessment of the observational record (297 years). Such large model uncertainty suggests that multi‐model analysis should become part of the standard UNSEEN procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Third‐party automatic weather stations (TPAWS) provide a compelling data source for scientists and practitioners to observe and estimate more accurate fine‐scale atmospheric conditions, including daily maximum and minimum temperature (denoted as Tmax and Tmin, respectively), than the current primary weather observation network can offer. Several uncertainties and errors arise in data from TPAWS as the quality control applied to these stations may be inadequate or ad hoc. In this study, we develop a statistical approach to evaluate the quality of daily Tmax and Tmin observations collected from TPAWS in Australia. Our approach compares a target observation with multiple types of reliable reference data, including neighbouring primary weather observations from the official Bureau of Meteorology of Australia stations, Australian Gridded Climate Data, and numerical weather prediction data. Guided by the operational requirements in terms of automation, interpretability, and simplicity as well as expandability, a separate test is formed for each type of reference data and then all the individual tests are merged to generate a single result based on a Gaussian mixture model that is used to provide the final overall assessment for each TPAWS observation. The overall assessment is made in the form of a p‐value‐based confidence score that measures the difference between the target observation and trusted reference data. Our method is validated by synthetic datasets based on high‐quality observations and is also applied to daily Tmax and Tmin observations from 184 TPAWS owned by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development of Western Australia. Background: The Australian Fire Danger Rating System program (AFDRS) has built a new fire danger rating system for Australia. A live trial of the system's Research Prototype (AFDRSRP), based on fire behaviour thresholds, was run and evaluated between October 2017 and March 2018. Aims: Live trial results are critically analysed, and knowledge gaps and recommendations for future work discussed. Methods: Australian bushfire experts assessed wildfires and prescribed burns across a range of vegetation types and weather conditions. Forecast fire danger ratings calculated using: (1) AFDRSRP; and (2) Forest Fire Danger Index (FFDI) and Grassland Fire Danger Index (GFDI) were compared against ratings derived by expert opinion for each evaluation fire (n = 336). Key results: Overall performance of AFDRSRP was superior to the FFDI/GFDI system (56 vs 43% correct), with a tendency to over-predict rather than under-predict fire potential. AFDRSRP also demonstrated its value to assess fire danger in fuel types not conforming to current grassland or forest models; e.g. for fuels that were grouped to use mallee-heath, spinifex and shrubland fire spread models. Conclusions: The AFDRSRP live trial was successful, outperforming the existing operational fire danger system. Implications: Identified improvements would further enhance AFDRSRP performance, ensuring readiness for operational implementation. A Research Prototype of the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRSRP) was designed and tested in a live trial. Fire danger ratings derived from the AFDRSRP and FFDI/GFDI systems were compared to expert-derived ratings for 336 fires. In this paper the results of the live trial are presented and discussed. A large literature on the sensitivity of streamflow response to climate variations has emerged over the past several decades, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. The usual approaches to this problem have been simple and do not fully address its complexity, which involves the individual and joint effects of large‐scale climate modes and smaller‐scale weather features on streamflow volumes, the presence of persistence in these time series and their effects on antecedent conditions. Ongoing improvements in observational and reanalysis datasets and online access allow for better quantification of the connections between streamflow response, climate variability modes and regional weather features. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether Bayesian networks can be used to better identify key factors and their associated pathways leading to streamflow generation. A Markov blanket approach is described and illustrated using monthly streamflow series recorded at eight gauging stations within or immediately adjacent to the coastal region of eastern mainland Australia. The method is compared and contrasted with conventional multiple linear regression with discussion around this type of approach as part of a growing interest in machine learning applications. One example is used to illustrate the application of both approaches to a streamflow series exhibiting strong non‐stationarity. Results for the other streamflow series are included in a concise synthesis. Overall, the results suggest that Bayesian networks have several desirable features in terms of transparency, interpretability and explanatory insight. The findings from this study lend support to the use of Bayesian networks for modelling connections between streamflow volume and the variability of climate and regional weather. This improved understanding of the key controls of streamflow variability is intended to help address growing needs around informing social, cultural, economic and ecological aspects of water planning and management. Photovoltaic (PV) power prediction plays a significant role in supporting the stable operation and resource scheduling of integrated energy systems. However, the randomness and volatility of photovoltaic power generation will greatly affect the prediction accuracy. Focusing on this issue, a prediction framework is proposed in this research by developing an improved sparrow search algorithm (ISSA) to optimize the hyperparameters of long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks. The ISSA is specially designed from the following three aspects to support a powerful search performance. Firstly, the initial population variety is enriched by using an enhanced sine chaotic mapping. Secondly, the relative position of neighboring producers is introduced to improve the producer position-updating strategy to enhance the global search capabilities. Then the Cauchy–Gaussian variation is utilized to help avoid the local optimal solution. Numerical experiments on 20 test functions indicate that ISSA could identify the optimal solution with better precision compared to SSA and PSO algorithms. Furthermore, a comparative study of PV power prediction methods is provided. The ISSA-LSTM algorithm developed in this paper and five benchmark models are implemented on a real dataset gathered from the Alice Springs area in Australia. In contrast to the SSA-LSTM model, most MAE, MAPE, and RMSE values of the proposed model are reduced by 20∼60%, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed model under various weather conditions and typical seasons. This study focuses on the rainfall-producing weather systems in the southern Murray–Darling Basin (MDB), Australia. These weather systems are divided into objects: cyclones, fronts, anticyclones, warm conveyor belt (WCB) inflows, WCB ascents, potential vorticity (PV) streamers, and cutoff lows. We investigate the changes in the frequency, amplitude, and relative position of these objects as the daily and seasonal rainfall change. Days on which the rainfall is heavy, especially in winter, are characterized by more PV streamers, cutoff lows, cyclones, fronts, and WCBs in the region. In contrast, dry days are characterized by more anticyclones over southeastern Australia in winter and summer. The effect of upper-level weather objects (PV streamers and cutoff lows) on lower-level objects, and their importance in producing rainfall, is quantified using the quasigeostrophic ω equation and separating the vertical motion into that induced by the upper and lower levels. On heavy rainfall days in winter, PV streamers and cutoff lows force strong upward motion in the lower troposphere, promoting cyclogenesis at lower levels, forcing ascent in the WCBs, and producing rain downstream of the southern MDB. Lower-level ascent forced by upper-level objects is important for the development of heavy rainfall in both seasons, although particularly in winter. Rainfall is attributed to individual objects. PV streamers and WCBs contribute most to the winter and summer rainfall, respectively. The difference in rainfall between anomalously wet and dry years can be explained in winter by the changes in the rainfall associated with PV streamers, whereas in summer it is mostly due to a reduction in the rainfall associated with WCBs. Significance Statement: The aim of the present study is to better understand how synoptic-scale weather systems differ in southeastern Australia in dry and wet periods, by considering a wide range of weather systems. We found weather systems are more closely aligned in the vertical on heavy rainfall days, and the majority of rainfall in this region is associated with warm conveyor belts. These results point to warm conveyor belts being an important, but not well recognized, contributor to rainfall in this region. Future work may investigate the roles of the various modes of variability and climate change in modulating warm conveyor belts and hence the regional rainfall variability in Australia. We studied over 222,000 cases of emergency veterinary consultations in four regions along the eastern coast of Australia. We found that cases of tick paralysis (TP) caused by the eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, accounted for 7.5% of these cases: >16,000 cases. The season of TP and the number (prevalence) of TP cases varied among regions and over the years. Our study of the association between weather and (i) the start of the season of TP, and (ii) the number of TP cases revealed much about the intricate relationship between the weather and I. holocyclus. We studied the effect of the hypothetical availability of isoxazoline‐containing tick‐preventative medicines and found that an increase in the availability of these medicines had significantly contributed to the decrease in TP cases. We found that the weather in winter accounted for the time of the year the season of TP starts whereas the weather in summer accounted for the number of TP cases in the TP season. Last, through a study of the effects of shifts in the climate under four hypothetical scenarios (warmer/cooler and drier/wetter than average), we propose that the start of the season of TP depends on how soon the weather in winter becomes suitable for the activity (e.g. host‐seeking) and the development of I. holocyclus nymphs, and that the number of TP cases during the TP season depends on how many engorged female ticks and their eggs survive during summer. The current study aimed to identity the optimal low-cost stroller cooling strategies for use in hot and moderately humid summer weather. A commercially available stroller was instrumented to assess the key parameters of the thermal environment. The cooling efficacy of eight different stroller configurations was examined in a counterbalanced order across 16 hot summer days (air temperature (Ta) = 33.3 ± 4.1 °C; relative humidity = 36.7 ± 15%; black globe temperature = 43.9 ± 4.6 °C). Compared with a standard-practice stroller configuration, combining a moist muslin draping with a battery-operated clip-on fan provided optimal in-stroller cooling, reducing the end-trial air temperature by 4.7 °C and the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) by 1.4 °C. In contrast, in-stroller temperatures were substantially increased by draping a dry muslin (Ta = +2.6 °C; WBGT = +0.9 °C) or flannelette (Ta = +3.7 °C; WBGT = +1.4 °C) cloth over the stroller carriage. These findings provide empirical evidence which may inform guidance aimed at protecting infants during hot weather. Heatwaves have been shown to increase the likelihood and intensity of extreme rainfall occurring immediately afterward, potentially leading to increased flood risk. However, the exact mechanisms connecting heatwaves to extreme rainfall remain poorly understood. In this study, we use weather type data sets for Australia and Europe to identify weather patterns, including fronts, cyclones, and thunderstorm conditions, associated with heatwave terminations and following extreme rainfall events. We further analyze, using reanalysis data, how atmospheric instability and moisture availability change before and after the heatwave termination depending on whether the heatwave is followed by extreme rainfall, as well as the location of the heatwave. We find that most heatwaves terminate during thunderstorm and/or frontal conditions. Additionally, atmospheric instability and moisture availability increase several days before the heatwave termination; but only if heatwaves are followed by extreme rainfall. We also find that atmospheric instability and moisture after a heatwave are significantly higher than expected from climatology for the same time of the year, and that highest values of instability and moisture are associated with highest post‐heatwave rainfall intensities. We conclude that the joint presence of high atmospheric instability, moisture, as well as frontal systems are likely to explain why rainfall is generally more extreme and likely after heatwaves, as well as why this compound hazard is mainly found in the non‐arid mid and high latitudes. An improved understanding of the drivers of these compound events will help assess potential changing impacts in the future. Vocalisations are a key component of communication for species that employ crypsis. The Eastern Ground Parrot (Pezoporus wallicus wallicus) is one such species that lives within dense heathland habitats in eastern Australia. Passive acoustic monitoring is now a common method used for avian monitoring and conservation programmes. For implementation of this method to be successful, we require a minimum level of understanding of the environmental and behavioural factors that may influence vocal activity. We tested how Eastern Ground Parrot call rate and chorus duration fluctuated across key temporal, environmental and meteorological variations over one year using passive acoustic monitoring from one site. Season, moon phase and days since rainfall predicted vocal activity of the birds at this site. Our results demonstrate the importance of considering the behavioural response of species to environmental conditions to account for potential bias in the interpretation of passive acoustic monitoring data. Regional understanding of severe surface winds produced by convective processes [severe convective winds (SCWs)] is important for decision-making in several areas of society, including weather forecasting and engineering design. Meteorological studies have demonstrated that SCWs can occur due to a number of different mesoscale and microscale processes, in a range of large-scale atmospheric environments. However, long-term observational studies of SCW characteristics often have not considered this diversity in physical processes, particularly in Australia. Here, a statistical clustering method is used to separate a large dataset of SCW events, measured by automatic weather stations around Australia, into three types, associated with strong background wind, steep lapse rate, and high moisture environments. These different types of SCWs are shown to have different seasonal and spatial variations in their occurrence, as well as different measured wind gust, lightning, and parent-storm characteristics. In addition, various convective diagnostics are tested in their ability to discriminate between measured SCW events and nonsevere events, with significant variations in skill between event types. Differences in environmental conditions and wind gust characteristics between event types suggests potentially different physical processes for SCW production. These findings are intended to improve regional understanding of severe wind characteristics, as well as environmental prediction of SCWs in weather and climate applications, by considering different event types. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to improve regional understanding of different types of severe wind events in Australia, specifically those associated with atmospheric convection. We did this by constructing a dataset of 413 severe convective wind events, using weather station and radar data within 20 regions around Australia. We then split those events into three different types, based on the environmental conditions that they occur within. We found that each event type tends to occur at different times of the year and in different regions, while also having different wind gust and lightning characteristics. In addition, the atmospheric conditions that are helpful for prediction of severe wind events differs between each type. These results are intended to be useful for prediction of severe wind events associated with convection and assessing their variability, characteristics, and impacts, in both weather forecasting and climate analysis. El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the main driver of interannual east Australian rainfall variability, but its link with rain‐producing synoptic weather systems is unclear. By tracking low pressure systems in ERA5 over 1979 to 2021, we find that springtime cyclones are linked to variations in the large‐scale atmospheric circulation during ENSO events. On spring days with a cyclone during La Niña, a pressure dipole occurs with a strong anticyclonic anomaly southeast of Australia and a cyclonic anomaly over eastern Australia. The northeasterly circulation directs tropical moisture toward eastern Australia, and coupled with induced ascent, promotes rainfall in this region. Both dynamical and thermodynamical changes are important for the rainfall response. An almost opposite circulation response occurs on cyclone days during El Niño events: high‐pressure over the Australian continent reduces rainfall in eastern Australia. These synoptic setups resemble the seasonal‐mean Rossby wave teleconnections, indicating a link between weather systems and ENSO. In this study, we examine differences in the characteristics of low‐pressure systems or cyclones on daily timescales between El Niño and La Niña events in Southern Hemisphere spring. We find that during La Niña, on days when a cyclone is present over eastern Australia, a high‐pressure system also occurs to the southeast of Australia in the Tasman Sea. This setup is conducive to rainfall in the region as it promotes moisture transport from the tropical Pacific Ocean and upward air flow, both of which are essential ingredients for rain. In contrast, during El Niño, there is an almost opposite circulation response; notably high‐pressure over the Australian continent reduces rainfall in eastern Australia. These patterns on daily timescales resemble the seasonal‐mean teleconnection patterns, thus indicating a link between weather systems and ENSO. Improving lead time for forecasting floods is important to minimize property damage and ensure the safety of the public and emergency services during flood events. Numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are important components of flood forecasting systems and have been vital in extending forecasting lead time under complex weather and terrain conditions. However, NWP forecasts still have significant uncertainty associated with the precipitation fields that are the main inputs of the hydrologic models and thus the resulting flood forecasts. An issue often overlooked is the importance of correctly representing variability over a range of different temporal scales. To address this gap, here a new wavelet-based method for postprocessing NWP precipitation forecasts is proposed. First, precipitation forecasts are decomposed into the frequency domain using a wavelet transform, providing estimates of the amplitudes and phases of the time series at different frequencies. Quantile mapping is then used to correct bias in the amplitudes of each frequency. Randomized phases are used to generate an ensemble of realizations of the precipitation forecasts. The postprocessed precipitation forecasts are reconstructed by taking the inverse of adjusted time-frequency decompositions with the corrected amplitudes and randomized phases. The proposed method was used to postprocess NWP precipitation forecasts in the Sydney region of Australia. There is a significant improvement in postprocessed precipitation forecasts across multiple time scales in terms of bias and temporal and spatial correlation structures. The postprocessed precipitation fields can be used for the modeling of fully distributed hydrologic systems, improving runoff stimulation, flood depth estimation, and flood early warning. Significance Statement: A new method accounting for the timing and spatial errors of NWP precipitation forecasts is proposed, and it can improve the skill of forecasts across multiple time scales, especially at short lead times. The proposed method provides a practical and effective way to correct these errors by incorporating spatiotemporal neighborhood information through the frequency domain using sophisticated wavelet transforms. With systematic timing and spatial errors removed, precipitation forecasts will be more skillful, and hydrological modeling using the postprocessed forecasts can provide higher accuracy of streamflow estimation. Human-induced climate change has resulted in long-term drying trends across southern Australia, particularly during the cool season, with the most pronounced impacts observed in the southwest since the 1970s. Although these trends have been linked to changes in large-scale atmospheric circulation features, the limited number of daily weather datasets that extend into the pre-industrial period have so far prevented an assessment of the long-term context of synoptic-level changes associated with global warming. To address this need, we present the development of the longest sub-daily atmospheric pressure, temperature and rainfall records for Australia beginning in 1830. We first consolidate a range of historical observations from the two southern Australian cities of Perth and Adelaide. After assessing the quality and homogeneity of these records, we verify their ability to capture the weather and climate features produced by the Southern Hemisphere's key climate modes of variability. Our analysis shows the historical observations are sensitive to the influence of large-scale dynamical drivers of Australian climate, as well as the relationship between southwestern and southeastern Australia. Finally, we demonstrate the ability of the dataset to resolve daily weather extremes by examining three severe storms that occurred in the nineteenth century associated with westerly storm tracks that influence southern Australia. The historical dataset introduced here provides a foundation for investigating pre-industrial weather and climate variability in southern Australia, extending the potential for attribution studies of anthropogenically-influenced weather and climate extremes. The incidence of pyro-cumulonimbus (pyroCb) caused by extreme wildfires has increased markedly in Australia over the last several decades. This increase can be associated with a dangerous escalation of wildfire risk and severe stratospheric pollution events. Atmospheric and fuel conditions are important influences on pyroCb occurrence, but the exact causal relationships are still not well understood. We used the Continuous Haines Index (C-Haines) to represent atmospheric instability and the Fuel Moisture Index (FMI) to represent fuel moisture to provide better insight into the effects of atmospheric and fuel conditions on pyroCb occurrence over southeast Australia. C-Haines and FMI were related to the probability of pyroCb occurrence by employing a logistic regression on data gathered between 1980 and 2020. Emphasis is placed on investigating the independent effects and combined effects of FMI and C-Haines, as well as assessing their potential to predict whether a pyroCb develops over a fire. The main findings of this study are: (1) high C-Haines and low FMI values are representative of favorable conditions for pyroCb occurrence, but C-Haines can offset the effect of FMI—the addition of C-Haines to the logistic model muted the significance of FMI; (2) among the components of C-Haines, air temperature lapse rate (CA) is a better predictor of pyroCb occurrence than the dryness component (CB); (3) there are important regional differences in the effect of C-Haines and FMI on pyroCb occurrence, as they have better predictive potential in New South Wales than in Victoria. Context: The grey-headed flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) is a vulnerable species endemic to eastern and south-eastern Australia. Environmental stressors are important contributors to physiological stress, leading to synchronous abortions. Aims: We investigate the possibilities of weather conditions and anthropogenic disturbances contributing to synchronous abortion events in a grey-headed flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) roost. Methods: We recorded observations of two synchronous abortion events in a flying-fox roost in Tamworth, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, during October 2017 and August 2019. Key results: Roost searches found ∼200 (October 2017) and 41 (August 2019) foetuses, equating to ∼0.5% and >0.1% of adults present at the time, respectively. Neither event was associated with significantly colder than average temperatures nor hot extremes (>42°C). Synchronous abortions cannot be easily attributed to unusually cold or hot site conditions. However, the surrounding region suffered from rainfall deficiencies, known to cause failure of flowering in diet plants, in the 6 months preceding both abortion events. Notably, no rainfall deficiency occurred in 6 months preceding August 2015 when colony size was also large, and no synchronous abortions occurred. Conclusions: Natural background rates of abortions are unlikely to explain the abortion events. The 2017 abortion event coincided with intense harassment of flying-foxes using noise agents; thus, it is possible that physiological stress was a contributor. The 2019 abortion event was associated with harassment of lesser intensity but coincided with a severe food shortage throughout surrounding regions. Implications: While it is not possible to attribute the synchronous abortion events conclusively to a single factor, the results suggest that the combination of chronic physiological stress from food shortage and acute stress from anthropogenic disturbance may have precipitated both synchronous abortion events. This study investigates the possibilities of weather conditions and anthropogenic disturbances contributing to two synchronous abortion events in the grey-headed flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus). The results suggest that a combination of chronic physiological stress from food shortage and acute stress from anthropogenic disturbance may have precipitated both synchronous abortion events. Background: Weather is a potentially important influence on how time is allocated to sleep, sedentary behaviour and physical activity across the 24-h day. Extremes of weather (very hot, cold, windy or wet) can create undesirable, unsafe outdoor environments for exercise or active transport, impact the comfort of sleeping environments, and increase time indoors. This 13-month prospective cohort study explored associations between weather and 24-h movement behaviour patterns. Methods: Three hundred sixty-eight adults (mean age 40.2 years, SD 5.9, 56.8% female) from Adelaide, Australia, wore Fitbit Charge 3 activity trackers 24 h a day for 13 months with minute-by-minute data on sleep, sedentary behaviour, light physical activity (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) collected remotely. Daily weather data included temperature, rainfall, wind, cloud and sunshine. Multi-level mixed-effects linear regression analyses (one model per outcome) were used. Results: Ninety thousand eight hundred one days of data were analysed. Sleep was negatively associated with minimum temperature (-12 min/day change across minimum temperature range of 31.2 °C, p = 0.001). Sedentary behaviour was positively associated with minimum temperature (+ 12 min/day, range = 31.2 oC, p = 0.006) and wind speed (+ 10 min/day, range = 36.7 km/h, p< 0.001), and negatively associated with sunshine (-17 min/day, range = 13.9 h, p < 0.001). LPA was positively associated with minimum temperature (+ 11 min/day, range = 31.2 °C, p = 0.002), cloud cover (+ 4 min/day, range = 8 eighths, p = 0.008) and sunshine (+ 17 min/day, range = 13.9 h, p < 0.001), and negatively associated with wind speed (-8 min/day, range = 36.7 km/h, p < 0.001). MVPA was positively associated with sunshine (+ 3 min/day, range = 13.9 h, p < 0.001) and negatively associated with minimum temperature (-13 min/day, range = 31.2 oC, p < 0.001), rainfall (-3 min/day, range = 33.2 mm, p = 0.006) and wind speed (-4 min/day, range = 36.7 km/h, p < 0.001). For maximum temperature, a significant (p < 0.05) curvilinear association was observed with sleep (half-U) and physical activity (inverted-U), where the decrease in sleep duration appeared to slow around 23 °C, LPA peaked at 31 oC and MVPA at 27 °C. Conclusions: Generally, adults tended to be less active and more sedentary during extremes of weather and sleep less as temperatures rise. These findings have the potential to inform the timing and content of positive movement behaviour messaging and interventions. We evaluated the performance in Australia of proxies designed to identify atmospheric conditions prone to hail and severe storms. In a convection-resolving but short-duration simulation, proxies that use instability and wind shear thresholds overestimated the probability of hail occurring when compared to the estimated occurrence of surface graupel in the model, particularly in Australia's tropical north. We used reanalysis data and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology severe storm archive to examine atmospheric conditions at times and locations when hailstorms, other storms, and no storms were reported between January 1979 and March 2021. In instability–shear space, the best discriminator between hail and no-storm times was found to vary predictably with melting-level height, allowing a new proxy to better represent latitudinal trends in atmospheric conditions. We found extra conditions that can be applied to the new proxy to efficiently reduce the number of false alarms. The new proxy outperforms the tested existing proxies for detection of hail-prone conditions in Australia. Significance Statement: Hail proxies take a description of the atmosphere, such as its temperature, moisture content, and wind properties at various heights, and determine the likelihood of hail forming and hitting the ground. It is a difficult task prone to uncertainty, but in many locations there are no direct observations of hail, and in these places information from proxies is valuable. Existing proxies have a tendency to overestimate the probability of hail falling in the north of Australia. In this study we developed an updated proxy that uses information about the atmosphere's melting-level height to refine its hail predictions. There is high confidence that climate change has increased the probability of concurrent temperature‐precipitation extremes, changed their spatial‐temporal variations and affected the relationships between drivers of such natural hazards. However, the extent of such changes has been less investigated in Australia. Daily data spanning the period 1889‐2019 (131 years) were extracted from SILO gridded dataset at 700 grid cells (1◦ × 1◦) across Australia to calculate annual and seasonal mean daily maximum temperature (MMT) and total precipitation (TPR). A nonparametric multivariate copula framework was adopted to estimate the return period of compound hot‐dry (CHD) events based on an 'And' hazard scenario (hotter than a threshold 'And' drier than a threshold). CHD extremes were defined as years with joint return periods of longer than 25 years calculated over the period 1889‐2019. Mann‐Kendall nonparametric tests were used to analyse trends in MMT and TPR as well as in the frequency of univariate and CHD extremes. Results showed a general cooling‐wetting trend over 1889‐1989. Significant increasing trends were detected over 1990‐2019 in the frequency and severity of hot extremes across the country while trends in dry extremes were mostly insignificant (and decreasing). A significant increase in the association between temperature and precipitation was identified at various temporal scales. While the frequency of CHD extremes was mostly stable over 1889‐1989, it significantly increased between 1990 and 2019 at 44% of studied grid cells, mostly located in the north, south‐east and southwest. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) is a billion-dollar crop in regional New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, Australia. Fusarium wilt (FW) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (Fov) is an economically important disease. Initial disease losses of up to 90% when the disease was first detected resulted in fields being taken out of cotton production. The disease is now well-managed due to the adoption of highly resistant varieties. However, annual disease surveys recently revealed that the disease dynamic has changed in the past few seasons. With relatively mild and wet weather conditions during the 2021/22 growing season, FW was detected in eight surveyed valleys in NSW and Queensland, with the disease incidence as high as 44.5% and 98.5% in individual fields in early and late seasons, respectively. Fov is genetically distinct and evolved from local Fusarium oxysporum strains. Additionally, the pathogen was reported to evolve rapidly under continuous cotton cropping pressure. However, our knowledge of the genetic composition of the prevailing population is limited. Sequences of the translation elongation factor alpha 1 (TEF1) revealed that 94% of Fusarium isolates recovered from FW-infected cotton were clustered together with known Australian Fov and relatively distant related to overseas Fov races. All these isolates, except for nine, were further confirmed positive with a specific marker based on the Secreted in Xylem 6 (SIX6) effector gene. Vegetative compatibility group (VCG) analyses of 166 arbitrarily selected isolates revealed a predominance of VCG01111. There was only one detection of VCG01112 in the Border Rivers valley where it was first described. In this study, the exotic Californian Fov race 4 strain was not detected using a specific marker based on the unique Tfo1 insertion in the phosphate (PHO) gene. This study indicated that the prevalence and abundance of Fov across NSW and Queensland in the past five seasons was probably independent of its genetic diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Here we investigate the strength of the relationships between meteorological factors and calling behaviour of 100 Australian frog species using continent‐wide citizen science data. First, we use this dataset to quantify the meteorological factors that best predict frog calling. Second, we investigate the strength of interactions among predictor variables. Third, we assess whether frog species cluster into distinct groups based on shared drivers of calling. Location: Australia. Method: To assess the relationship between calling and meteorological traits, we used spatio‐temporal subsampling (daily data fitted to 10 km2 grid cells) of call and meteorological data as inputs to a boosted regression tree. We scaled the model outputs, which created a descriptive ranking of predictor importance. For strongly day‐driven species, we conducted further analyses to examine the influences of meteorological factors within the breeding season. Results: We found a strong seasonal signal, with day of year the strongest relationship to calling in 67 out of our 100 species, moderate relationships between temperature and calling, and weak relationships between rainfall and calling. Despite the common narratives, we found that frogs did not group into distinct categories based upon the influence of meteorological factors. For strongly day‐driven species, we found similar patterns within the breeding season. Main conclusions: We demonstrate the importance of day of year and temperature thresholds in predicting frog calling behaviour in Australia. Understanding how meteorological conditions influence phenological events, such as breeding, will be increasingly important considering the rapid changes in environmental conditions and stability throughout most of the world, and how important breeding is to species survival. Methods: We used satellite‐derived fire severity mapping from 1988 to 2020 to model the effects of drought, weather and fuels on the annual area burned and the proportion of the area burned that was impacted by high‐severity fire across four bioregions. Trends in wildfire extent and severity were then estimated from 1953 to 2020 using these derived models and gridded climate data to assess changes in climatic potential for large and severe wildfires. Estimates of wildfire extent and severity for the 2019–2020 fire season were then assessed against prior seasons (1953–2019). Results: Annual area burned was positively related to the severity of seasonal drought and frequency of fire weather conditions that promote substantial daily fire growth. Wildfire severity was elevated in years with severe fire weather and increased with increasing antecedent drought in years without severe fire weather. Fuels had a lesser effect on wildfire extent and severity than climate. Potential fire extent and severity have increased over time in response to an increased severity of drought and worsening fire weather conditions. Estimates of wildfire extent and severity during the 2019–2020 fire season approached the upper extreme within each bioregion, owing to widespread extreme climatic conditions. Main conclusions: The climatic potential for large and severe forest fires has increased across south‐eastern Australia since the 1950s, probably because of anthropogenic climate change. In so-called Australia, there is growing engagement with cities and towns as spaces of ongoing Indigenous presence and as Indigenous Country. In this paper, led by Gumbaynggirr Custodian Uncle Bud Marshall, we engage with urban(ising) environments through weather, memories and ancestral presences; re-membering weather's agencies, such as winds and seasons, as Country. Through more-than-human relationships, and our places within them, we attend to the ways that weathery presences call urban scholars and practitioners to respond to the fact that no place in Australia, no matter how colonised or urbanised, exists outside of, or separate to, Aboriginal relational ontologies and sovereignties. There is an imperative for fire agencies to quantify the potential for prescribed burning to mitigate risk to life, property and environmental values while facing changing climates. The 2019–2020 Black Summer fires in eastern Australia raised questions about the effectiveness of prescribed burning in mitigating risk under unprecedented fire conditions. We performed a simulation experiment to test the effects of different rates of prescribed burning treatment on risks posed by wildfire to life, property and infrastructure. In four forested case study landscapes, we found that the risks posed by wildfire were substantially higher under the fire weather conditions of the 2019–2020 season, compared to the full range of long-term historic weather conditions. For area burnt and house loss, the 2019–2020 conditions resulted in more than a doubling of residual risk across the four landscapes, regardless of treatment rate (mean increase of 230%, range 164–360%). Fire managers must prepare for a higher level of residual risk as climate change increases the likelihood of similar or even more dangerous fire seasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From the establishment of the colony of New South Wales at Sydney in 1788, British soldiers and settlers fought a series of wars against Australian Aboriginal warriors to occupy land for farming and grazing. Rainfall in Australia is highly variable due to the influence of five external climate drivers, including the El Niño Southern Oscillation. This article argues there is a strong correlation between the onset of drought in the inland region of south-eastern Australia and the outbreak of armed conflict in the period from 1824 to 1841. This article argues that this approach of comparing climate data and records of conflicts can be extended to other regions and time periods in Australia, and in other regions of the world affected by similar climate drivers. Legionella pneumophila is ubiquitous and sporadically infects humans causing Legionnaire's disease (LD). Globally, reported cases of LD have risen fourfold from 2000 to 2014. In 2016, Sydney, Australia was the epicenter of an outbreak caused by L. pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lpsg1). Whole-genome sequencing was instrumental in identifying the causal clone which was found in multiple locations across the city. This study examined the epidemiology of Lpsg1 in an urban environment, assessed typing schemes to classify resident clones, and investigated the association between local climate variables and LD outbreaks. Of 223 local Lpsg1 isolates, we identified dominant clones with one clone isolated from patients in high frequency during outbreak investigations. The core genome multi-locus sequence typing scheme was the most reliable in identifying this Lpsg1 clone. While an increase in humidity and rainfall was found to coincide with a rise in LD cases, the incidence of the major L. pneumophila outbreak clone did not link to weather phenomena. These findings demonstrated the role of high-resolution typing and weather context assessment in determining source attribution for LD outbreaks in urban settings, particularly when clinical isolates remain scarce.IMPORTANCEWe investigated the genomic and meteorological influences of infections caused by Legionella pneumophila in Sydney, Australia. Our study contributes to a knowledge gap of factors that drive outbreaks of legionellosis compared to sporadic infections in urban settings. In such cases, clinical isolates can be rare, and thus, other data are needed to inform decision-making around control measures. The study revealed that core genome multi-locus sequence typing is a reliable and adaptable technique when investigating Lpsg1 outbreaks. In Sydney, the genomic profile of Lpsg1 was dominated by a single clone, which was linked to numerous community cases over a period of 40 years. Interestingly, the peak in legionellosis cases during Autumn was not associated with this prevalent outbreak clone. Incorporating meteorological data with Lpsg1 genomics can support risk assessment strategies for legionellosis in urban environments, and this approach may be relevant for other densely populated regions globally., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
