Loyalty raises a dilemma for women's career progression and leadership because it signals confidence in the organisation, despite the ongoing constraints that organisations present for women and their leadership aspirations. The research investigates women's loyalty in the context of higher education. Focussing on a select group of mid-level female academics, the paper will argue against a common sense understanding of loyalty as an expression of female care. A critical reconsideration of loyalty as care is made possible by analysing the "utility of loyalty" and how it becomes a legitimate organising principle that operationalises institutional and personal objectives. How women enact loyalty draws on agency theory to explain and analyse the way loyalty is appropriated by women. The results show contradictory actions around loyalty, however, these can be clarified by agency theory to demystify loyalty and critically analyse how specific work actions and practices shape explain seemingly contradictory and emotive responses. The complications around women and loyalty are expressions of a substantive rationality through which mid-level female academics respond to the uneven opportunities, limitations and constraints that influence their work, profession and relationships. What do a group of female leadership aspirants think about female leadership? This question and the subsequent discussion broach a sensitive topic about how women respond to female leadership and whether this differs from that of male leadership. This article investigates female leadership through the experiences of a group of female leadership aspirants as they consider what makes an effective leader. An interpretive perspective drawn from interview data frames the analysis, particularly identifying agentic and communal leadership practices as representative of leadership behaviours and practices that female participants have acknowledged as effective. This article illustrates that particular leadership actions are preferred by women and that these can be evident in both male and female leaders. What emerges from the research is that the quality of leadership, specifically agentic practices that create efficacy and support, in addition to communal leadership that demonstrates emotional balance, are of greater importance to women than the gender of the leader.

Enhancing access to education and knowledge is a long-held principle enshrined in education policy. Access to education offers leverage for educational attainment and achievement, at the individual and social levels. In policy, the term equates with concepts of inclusion, social justice and equity. Over the last decades, as education policy has responded to global social, cultural and economic reforms, concepts such as access have also undergone revision. This article revisits the relationship between access, education and knowledge-making, in order to clarify the meaning of access in current education policies by re-evaluating how access is constructed in policy and how the concept associates with other aspects of education. The research examines the concept of access in order to improve the efficacy of policy, opening the way for more systematic and transparent policy analysis and policy making centred on defining and delineating conceptual meanings such as access, as a basis for more targeted policy. Using evidence-based policy research, the article proposes a research process model based on the hierarchy of abstraction, to show that education policy requires systematic examination of key concepts as a fundamental step towards more clearly defined policy postulates that recognise and deal with contextual complexity of education policy. Defining and delineating the meaning of concepts such as access can help in the way that education policy contributes to guiding innovative knowledge construction. (Contains 2 figures and 4 tables.)

Drawing on self-identified metaphorical expressions that represent women at work, this paper discusses how a group of midcareer academic women experience their work and workplace. The research was prompted by consistently high number of female academics who remain in the mid-levels in the academic career ladder despite research that shows this group is ambitious and holds leadership aspirations. Understanding the experiences at the mid-career levels, by gaining insights into their workplace experiences, may further our knowledge of how to advance women in leadership. The research draws on the metaphoric descriptions provided by 28 mid-career women working across three Australian universities. Metaphors elicit hidden and implicit values about how the subjects respond and give meaning to their work and working conditions and have been used in organisational practices to disclose underlying issues. The findings discuss the positive and negative work and workplace associations disclosed by the participants. However, the findings suggests that women find pleasure and desire in and through their work. It is through their work that academic women experience self-expression, creativity and adding value. By focussing on the value of doing academic work and the rewards of contributing to academia, there is potential to enhance the capacity for mid-career women to thrive in academia and build the foundations for leadership. • The principle of evaluative reasoning is a neglected area in educational research. • The applied principle provides findings for program refinement and improvement. • PSE programs can bridge gaps in work experience opportunities for adults with DS. • PSE programs can foster more inclusive education and work settings. • Speech therapy in PSE programs can facilitate transitions to a workplace setting. Low employment rates of individuals with intellectual disabilities in Australia stem from apprehensions about their abilities to engage in work, and employers' low confidence in hiring them in paid positions. Drawing on principles of evaluative reasoning, this paper reports on findings from a mixed-methods formative evaluation. It was conducted to understand the need for a two-year Education-to-Work training program, the quality of its content, and the views that 8 parents, 5 facilitators, and 4 students had about changes attributable to the program after its first year. Program performance was assessed against the quality standards of excellent, good, satisfactory, marginal, and needs improvement. Findings from the evaluation highlighted the potential usefulness of post-secondary education (PSE) transitioning programs to secure longer term employment, for adults with Down syndrome. Specific recommendations are made to improve the quality of the program, and abstractions gleaned from the study are highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
