Purpose: Patient self-advocacy is valued and promoted; however, it may not be readily accessible to all. This analysis examines the experiences of women in Australia who had cardiac disease in pregnancy or the first year postpartum through the lenses of self-advocacy and gender, specifically seeking to elaborate on the contexts, impacts, barriers, and women's responses to the barriers to self-advocacy. Method: A qualitative study design was used. Twenty-five women participated in semistructured in-depth interviews. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Analysis of findings generated the following themes: 1) Silent dream scream, 2) Easier said than done, 3) Crazy-making, and 4) Concentric circles of advocacy. Regardless of women's personal attributes, knowledge and experience, self-advocating for their health was complex and difficult and had negative cardiac and psychological outcomes. Conclusion: While the women encountered significant barriers to self-advocating, they were resilient and ultimately developed strategies to be heard and to advocate on their own behalf and that of other women. Findings can be used to identify ways to support women to selfadvocate and to provide adequately resourced and culturally safe environments to enable healthcare professionals to provide person-centred care. This article argues the voice of people with dementia was missing from the Australian Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (RCAC) Final Report. This absence was notwithstanding that the RCAC was explicitly tasked to inquire into dementia care. The RCAC Final Report is shown to marginalise the perspective and experience of people with dementia in the aged care system at the same time as prioritising substitute voices of experts, advocates, family and care partners. This absence of voice repeats and re-inscribes framing of people with dementia as "missing persons". Where people with dementia face practical and legal barriers to participate in civic and legal processes, the RCAC failed to adjust its methodologies to ensure their voices were "heard". The RCAC's re-inscription of marginalisation of people with dementia raises concerns for the legitimacy and success of its recommendations for dementia aged care reform. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents new insights into the views of families regarding the educational opportunities for their children in special school settings. It reports on a study designed to capture the perspectives of families regarding the opportunities to consult and engage with teachers on the education of their child or children with disabilities across special schools in Australia. The methodology provided a framework of investigation critical to the research in this study. Furthermore, a significant body of parental voices was manifested through the study providing a rich bank of perspectives regarding their preferred delivery models of education for their families and children with disabilities. Background during pain assessment in persons unable to self-report, such as people living with dementia, vocalisations are commonly used as pain indicators. However, there is a lack of evidence from clinical practice regarding their diagnostic value and relationship with pain. We aimed to explore vocalisations and pain in people with dementia undergoing pain assessments in clinical practice settings. Methods a total of 22,194 pain assessments were reviewed in people with dementia (n  = 3,144) from 34 different Australian aged care homes and two dementia specific programs. Pain assessments were conducted by 389 purposely trained health care professionals and cares using PainChek pain assessment tool. Vocalised expressions were determined based on nine vocalisation features included in the tool. Linear mixed models were used to examine the relationship of pain scores with vocalisation features. Using a single pain assessment for each of the 3,144 people with dementia, additional data analysis was conducted via Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) analysis and Principal Component Analysis. Results vocalisation scores increased with increasing pain intensity. High pain scores were more likely with the presence of sighing and screaming (8 times). The presence of vocalisation features varied depending on the intensity of pain. The ROC optimal criterion for the voice domain yielded a cut-off score of ≥2.0 with a Youden index of 0.637. The corresponding sensitivity and specificity were 79.7% [confidence interval (CI): 76.8–82.4%] and 84.0% (CI : 82.5–85.5%), respectively. Conclusion we describe vocalisation features during presence of different levels of pain in people with dementia unable to self-report, therefore providing evidence in regard to their diagnostic value in clinical practice. Social policy in Australia and internationally, that is focused on improving children's safety and well‐being, increasingly makes implicit or explicit reference to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Concomitantly, children and young people's participation is more widely acknowledged as being key to ensuring policies, programmes and services reflect their views and lived experience. The non‐government sector, along with statutory bodies like the National and State‐based Children's Commissions in Australia, have led the way in advocating for children's participation, including the development of resources to assist in facilitating this. Little is known, however, about the nature, scope and extent of such resources nor the evidence informing them. This article reports the findings of a scoping review of rights‐informed resources and academic articles that provide a sound rationale and "good practice" information, education and/or professional learning about children's participation rights, in particular. The findings highlight some of the tensions and possibilities between the rhetorical aspirations of participation and existing practice. The analysis is intended to support the efforts of organisations endeavouring to improve their understanding and approaches to embedding children's rights, including participation in decision making and other matters of interest or concern to them. Employee voice in company strategic and governance decision-making in Anglophone countries commonly has few formal channels. This article's investigation of labour's (collective employees) interest expression in Australia and New Zealand finds that labour actors engage with company actors to craft a range of channels of expression and participation. In addition to actors' utilisation of formal institutional provisions for adversarial collective bargaining and cooperative participation, actors utilise other 'at the table' arrangements that are typically of low salience. These include non-formal, inter-actor arrangements that facilitate contribution to decisions that can include matters of strategic importance. Labour actors engage with company actors in intricate micro-political relations to contribute influence in framing understandings and horizons of decisions and norm-building. In 2020, the acting and training community mourned the passing of internationally renowned voice coach Kristin Linklater. In 2014, Australia quietly lost an equally significant voice coach. Like Linklater, Betty Williams trained with Iris Warren. Unlike Linklater, Williams chose not to publish anything about her approach to actor training. Rather, her work only exists in the performances of the hundreds of actors she trained at Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) between 1973 and 2011. I was apprenticed to Betty Williams in 1995, as a post-graduate student within the NIDA Voice Studies course. From week to week I observed her classes, private tutorials, and collaborations with the country's prominent theatre directors. She equipped me with practical exercises, dialect resources, and a passion for the playwright's words, before sending me out into the world to pass down 'the wisdom of the tribe' to a new generation of actors. In 2001, and again in 2011, Williams generously allowed me to return to NIDA to interview her about her approach to voice training. Using transcripts from both the 2001 interview and the final interview she gave just days before retiring in 2011, this extended conversation provides insight into the training of Australian actors' voices. This research uses exploratory, mixed-method case studies to explore the relationship between Australian micro- and small presses (MSPs), their publishing and promotion of writers of difference (WODs), and the relationship to Couldry's (2010) concept of voice. Through structured interviews with two publishing houses and their WODs, I (a) identified MSPs' strategies for publishing and promoting silenced and neglected writers, thus facilitating the expression of voice; and (b) learned how MSPs' authors respond to their publishers' efforts to promote voice, and what publishing strategies they suggest for the industry. This article has been written with the purpose of exploring how voice is represented in the application of the 'best interests' principle within child protection in Australia. It seeks to identify the connection between anti-oppressive theory and the lack of representation of voice from the families and children who are involuntarily involved with child protection agencies. In this article, I begin with a brief look at the historical use and origins of the best interests' standard in a child protection context. It identifies the current Australian legal frameworks that utilises the best interests' standard, the core foundations for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the historical and current implications for practice. In this article, I consider the link between the use of the best interests' standard in describing what risk in child protection is, and subsequently how voice is then represented in practice and legal frameworks. I explore the barriers which adversely affect the ability of practitioners to invite, hear and understand the voice of those they work with. In this article, I conclude that the standard has been a consistently tokenistic, misrepresenting and, at times, self-serving mechanism. In Australia, the best interests' standard has not represented the voices of the people who are involuntarily involved with the system and privileges the voices of those with decision-making power. I seek to highlight that the issue is not about recreating the systems within child protection, rather meaningfully engaging the voices of the families and children who are involved with it. What does Whiteness Theory tell us about "traditional" First Nations research? Whiteness theory suggests that "race" is an illusory term used largely for oppressive purposes. Using peer-reviewed journal articles that were gathered to study First Nations youth-centred issues, Whiteness theory is used to assess the "racelessness" of the methods and philosophy of samples from previous studies of Indigenous groups. Framed by Interpretive Research Synthesis techniques, eight articles studying Indigenous peoples from Australia, the US, and Canada, but widely differentiated topics, are analyzed conceptually to determine their synchronicity with the Whiteness Theory approach, or lack thereof. It is noted that elements of this "raceless" community cohesion exists, to greater or lesser degrees, in all of the research that is sampled. Some of this is due to the modernity of the research and some to the empowerment of Indigenous participants, but mostly from the breaking down of barriers (identifying with Others) as Whiteness Theory suggests. Background: Oropharyngeal dysphagia and laryngeal dysfunction are two lesser known complications after lung and heart transplantation. The presence of these features places this immunocompromised population at high risk of pulmonary complications and subsequent medical deterioration. Early identification of swallowing and voice dysfunction would be beneficial to optimize management. Aims: To examine the association between patient risk factors and postoperative outcomes with referral to speech pathology (SP) following signs of swallowing and voice dysfunction. Methods & Procedures: A retrospective review was conducted on demographic data, patient risk factors and postoperative course in 284 patients following lung and/or heart transplantation between 2010 and 2013. Variables were analysed for any association between pre‐ and postoperative factors and SP referral. Outcomes & Results: A total of 24% were referred to SP with a mean age of 47 years. Binary logistic regression identified a statistically significant association between the number of intubations (odds ratio (OR) = 2.066, p = 0.028), intubation duration (OR = 1.004, p < 0.01), length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) (OR = 1.068, p < 0.01), and number of ICU admissions (OR = 1.384, p = 0.046) and SP referral. Intubation time and the total days in ICU were greater for patients referred to SP. Mortality also increased for these variables and for the numbers of reintubations and readmissions. Analysis of pre‐operative risk factors revealed cerebrovascular disease to be a significant predictor of SP referral (OR = 6.747, p = 0.032). Conclusions & Implications: This study demonstrates significant clinical indicators for referral to SP for the management of oropharyngeal dysphagia and laryngeal dysfunction in patients after lung or heart transplantation. The Aboriginal People of Australia are arguably the oldest uninterrupted community of indigenous peoples in the world, but they have not yet been heard in the corridors of power. Recently, a proposal arose from Aboriginal People to give them a 'voice' that would be elected to give advice to the federal government and promote their rights and interests. Several attempts have been made in the past to create an advisory body for Aboriginal People, but they have all failed. Early childhood curricular documents in countries such as Australia position children's voice and agency as central to all early childhood practices. Children's choices expressed by their voices are regarded as children's exhibition of their agency. Hence, early childhood educators are urged to listen and respond to children's voices, and such 'listened' responses are applauded as educators' acknowledgement of children's agency. Moreover, recognition of children's agency is also seen as accepting children as individuals capable of making preferences and choices, like adults. In this article, the author argues that children's agency and voice cannot be conceptualised in their absolute, individualistic terms, and such simplistic consideration only results in diminishing children's capacity as political enactors. In doing so, the author does not obliterate the presence of agency and voice. However, it is suggested that children's agency and voice should be viewed as performances attached to power. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the voice of Chinese and Vietnamese international students through studying the similarities and differences in their learning experiences and the reasons underlying their experience.Design/methodology/approach In total, 57 Chinese and Vietnamese international students participated in focus groups and interviews regarding their experiences of higher education and their suggestions for improvement.Findings The findings show that Chinese and Vietnamese students had varying levels of challenges and different progress in the adaptation process and that Chinese students were more vocal and less satisfied with their experience of higher education than Vietnamese students. This is due to the mismatch in their expectation and the actual experience and the cultural influence.Research limitations/implications The sample size is relatively small. This study only looked at Vietnamese and Chinese students in one university, which might have limitations in relation to subjectivity and bias.Practical implications The findings provide useful implications for educators, institutional leaders and support staff to improve facilities, teaching quality and service to students.Originality/value In the current era of internationalisation, commercialisation and mobility in institutions around the world, this study advances current research and provides timely insight into the experiential differences of the Chinese and Vietnamese student experience and their voice. This article discusses how a performed drama based on a narrative inquiry into the lived experience of women casual academics in Australian universities is understood by an audience. The audience, principally comprised of casual and ongoing academics, described the drama as authentic and personally recognised many of the main scenarios and preoccupations re-presented. In particular, they identified that the drama’s re-presentation of casual academics’ feelings of insecurity, precarious collegial relationships, and a lack of belonging and voice strongly resonated with them. The presentation also provoked them to communicate their own lived experiences of academia, which constituted a second set of narrative data. Moreover, when the audience was invited to engage with and respond to performed data they became active and collaborative participants in the research project by sharing personal insights and narratives which extended the scope and depth of the initial research project. Therefore, a public re-presentation of narrative research can transform narrative inquiry research into an action research project if the researcher adjusts her/his research approach and accepts that the audience narrative response can function as a second phase of data gathering. Purpose: To determine factors associated with chronic hoarseness in Australian group fitness instructors (GFIs). Method: A total of 361 GFIs (81 males, 280 females), aged between 18–67 years currently active in the Australian fitness industry, completed a 65-item self-completion questionnaire distributed via SurveyMonkey. Demographic, lifestyle and voice use variables thought to influence vocal health and voice production in the GFI population were examined using logistic regression analyses. GFIs' chronic hoarseness with response options "positive" and "negative" was considered as the outcome variable of interest. Result: Approximately 39% of the study participants reported having chronic hoarseness. Multivariable logistic regression modelling revealed a set of statistically significant factors associated with chronic hoarseness. These include: younger age, partial voice loss while instructing, partial voice loss after instructing and using vocal volume louder than normal speaking voice whilst instructing. Conclusion: This study has identified factors associated with the presentation of chronic hoarseness in the Australian GFI population. Prospective studies are required to validate the findings of this study in order to better understand predictive factors of chronic hoarseness among GFIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Voice has become an important yet ambivalent tool for the recognition of disability. The transformative potential of voice is dependent on a political commitment to listening to disabled people. To focus on listening redirects accountability for social change from disabled people to the ableist norms, institutions and practices that structure which voices can be heard in policy debates. In this paper, I use disability theory on voice and political theory on listening to examine policy documents for the National Disability Insurance Scheme in light of claims made by the disability movement. Although my study finds some evidence of openness in the policy development stage, the scheme falls short of valuing the diverse voices of disabled people as partners in shared dialogue. There is growing interest in research on the non-modal voice quality, creaky voice; however, its identification often relies on time-consuming manual annotation, leading to a recent focus on automatic creak detection methods. Various automatic methods have been proposed, which rely on varying types and combinations of acoustic cues for creak detection. In this paper, we compare the performance of three automatic tools, the AntiMode method, the Creak Detector algorithm, and the Roughness algorithm, against manual annotation of creak using data from 80 Australian English speakers. We explore the possibility that tools used in combination may yield more accurate creak detection than individual tools used alone. Based on method comparisons, we present options for researchers, including an "out-of-the-box" approach, which supports combining automatic tools, and propose additional steps to further improve creak detection. We found restricting analysis to sonorant segments significantly improves automatic creak detection, and tools performed consistently better on female speech than male speech. Findings support previous work showing detection may be optimised by performing a creak probability threshold sweep on a subset of data prior to applying the Creak Detector algorithm on new datasets. Results provide promising solutions for advancing efficient large-scale research on creaky voice.

Aims: The aim of this study was to provide a description of normative speaking fundamental frequency (f os ) characteristics for adult speakers of Australian English. The effects of age, sex, and geographical location on f os were also examined to assess whether variations existed., Methods: f os data for 244 female and 135 male speakers aged 18-60 years from a recent large-scale corpus of Australian English were analyzed on a passage reading task. Creak phonation frequencies were first separated from the modal phonation frequencies algorithmically. Descriptive statistics were then generated for modal voice., Results: The mixed effects linear regression model suggested that geographical location had no effect on f os (P = 0.0677). The multiple linear regression model suggested that both sex (P = 0.000) and age (P = 0.000) significantly predicted f os . f os of the female speakers was greater than males by 76 Hz, when accounted for by age, and for every increase in age by one year, f os decreased by 0.37 Hz. Normative data on f os were therefore provided with reference to speaker sex and age only., Conclusion: Both clinicians and researchers are provided with normative f os data for 18-60 year-old speakers of Australian English. These updated data have increased internal and external validity relative to previous literature. These increases were achieved by having a larger sample size, systematically sampling speakers of different age groups and geographical locations, sampling contemporary speakers of Australian English and excluding speakers with known concomitant factors that affect f os ., (Copyright © 2020 The Voice Foundation. This article identifies key trends over the last 20 years in residential and community care for older people in England, Finland and Australia, investigating the extent of ‘de-institutionalisation’, ‘privatisation’ and ‘individualisation’. The concepts of collective and individual ‘voice’ and ‘choice’ are used to interrogate the roles of collective and individual actors, older people and carers, in influencing policy formulation. While these three processes have been pursued by policy-makers in each country, their implementation is illuminated by understanding how ‘voice’ and ‘choice’ have been operationalised – individually and collectively – in each context. In the reshaping of eldercare in the three states, the analysis identifies the greater influence of claims-making by family carers, who provide the informal bastion of formal care services in the push to de-institutionalisation, in comparison with the collective and individual voices of older people as ‘service users’. In Australia, community art has drawn significant research attention in regard to its potential as a community development strategy. Despite the fact that researchers have presented evidence for the positive developmental outcomes of participation in community art projects, a gap remains in understanding how and why people's participation in a community art project can lead to those positive outcomes. This research explored the meaning of participation in a community art project from the vantage point of the people who experience it. Ten participants were interviewed about their participation in a community art project (The Seeming) held in Bendigo, Australia. Following thematic analyses we identified three themes of how participants viewed their participation in a community arts project. These themes included giving voice to the silenced, creation of social connections and challenging and reproducing stereotypes. Participation means coming together and the findings highlight the potential of community arts projects for promoting the creation of new relationships and new stories about community. However, there are also problematic stories about self and others that were not deconstructed. It is argued that the settings in which different groups join can be meaningfully extended if there is an explicit concern with consciousness raising and deconstruction of normative stories. Voice is a concept that is a metaphoric proxy for authorship in a wide range of areas of human creativity. In the area of documentary fllmmaking, Bill Nichols' conception of voice has been pre-eminent, dating from a 1983 essay 'The Voice of Documentary' that has been frequently republished since. This paper argues that Nichols' conception of documentary voice requires revision to take account of shifts in: the genres of documentary in relation to other cultural formations; the surrounding (cross) cultural politics; and the way that the concept of 'voice' appears when viewed from the perspective of a reflective practitioner rather than from that of a media studies theorist. The work develops a vocabulary of voice to account for the relationship between the documentary filmmaker and other categories, including subjects, audiences and broadcasters. In particular the category of 'choric voice' is developed, applying perspectives derived from a study of the classical Greek chorus to documentary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While voicing contrasts in word-onset position are acquired relatively early, much less is known about how and when they are acquired in word-coda position, where accurate production of these contrasts is also critical for distinguishing words (e.g., dog vs. dock). This study examined how the acoustic cues to coda voicing contrasts are realized in the speech of 4-year-old Australian English-speaking children. The results showed that children used similar acoustic cues to those of adults, including longer vowel duration and more frequent voice bar for voiced stops, and longer closure and burst durations for voiceless stops along with more frequent irregular pitch periods. This suggests that 4-year-olds have acquired productive use of the acoustic cues to coda voicing contrasts, though implementations are not yet fully adult-like. The findings have implications for understanding the development of phonological contrasts in populations for whom these may be challenging, such as children with hearing loss.

Objective: To report on our experience with open pediatric laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) with cartilage interposition grafts over the past 15 years and document setbacks and factors that affect postoperative outcomes., Method: A retrospective chart review was performed on all pediatric patients who underwent single and double-stage LTR at The Children's Hospital in Westmead between August 2004 and July 2019. The outcomes measured include the overall decannulation rate, rates of postoperative complications, need for subsequent procedures and postoperative functional results (dyspnea, stridor, voice impairment)., Results: Between August 2004 and July 2019, a total of 51 open LTRs were performed on 46 patients, with mean age 3.9 years (range 1 month to 12.1 years), including 11 revision operations (11.8%). The most common indication for surgery was subglottic stenosis, followed by bilateral vocal cord motion impairment followed by anterior glottic web. 13 cases (25.5%) were complicated by ventilator associated pneumonia in the postoperative period and 11 patients (21.6%) experienced wound complications ranging from localised wound abscess to wound dehiscence and graft failure. Patients with viral infections had an increased risk of wound dehiscence and graft failure (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.01 - 3.23). Patients with a greater decrease in albumin in the postoperative period were more likely to have wound complications (OR 1.8; 95% CI 1.17 -2.83). Ten patients failed extubation and required a subsequent tracheostomy. Severity of stenosis, age at time of surgery, history of prematurity and revision LTR were not predictors for need for reintubation and/or tracheostomy after surgery. 23 cases (45.1%) underwent subsequent endoscopic procedures such a balloon dilatation to manage restenosis following LTR. Though 45.7% had a very good outcome, a significant group of 21% had ongoing voice issues., Conclusion: Good outcomes were achieved following open LTR for pediatric laryngotracheal stenosis despite postoperative complications. At final follow up, 33 patients (71.7%) had good exercise tolerance with no or mild stridor. This paper provides insight into senior secondary learners' views on Islamic Studies (IS) in three large Australian Islamic schools. This study offers a 'dialogic alternative' of 'speaking with' rather than 'speaking for' learners in Islamic educational research, planning, and renewal within K-12 Islamic schools. The study privileges learners' voice and enables an insight to their experience with one of the most important features of Islamic schools—Islamic Studies. Using phenomenology as a methodological framework, learner voice was elicited through focus groups where 75 learners (years 10, 11, and 12) provided information describing their experience with Islamic Studies. Thematic content analysis of the textual data suggests that learners' dissatisfaction far outweighs their satisfaction with Islamic Studies. Voicing contrasts are lexically important for differentiating words in many languages (e.g., "bear" vs "pear"). Temporal differences in the voice onset time (VOT) and closure duration (CD) contribute to the voicing contrast in word-onset position. However, little is known about the acoustic realization of these voicing contrasts in Australian English-speaking children. This is essential for understanding the challenges faced by those with language delay. Therefore, the present study examined the VOT and CD values for word-initial stops as produced by 20 Australian English-speaking 4-5-year-olds. As anticipated, these children produced a systematic distinction between voiced and voiceless stops at all places of articulation (PoAs). However, although the children's VOT values for voiced stops were similar to those of adults, their VOTs for voiceless stops were longer. Like adults, the children also had different CD values for voiced and voiceless categories; however, these were systematically longer than those of adults. Even after adjusting for temporal differences by computing proportional ratios for the VOT and CD, children's voicing contrasts were not yet adultlike. These results suggest that children of this age are still developing appropriate timing and articulatory adjustments for voicing contrasts in the word-initial position.

Glottalisation is an important cue to coda stop voicelessness, particularly for younger Australian English speakers who utilise glottalisation more than older speakers, suggesting a recent sound change. However, most previous studies of glottalisation in this variety of English have focussed on single word utterances, raising questions about whether glottalisation in those studies may have been prosodically conditioned rather than specific to the coda stop: Could the observed effect have been due to phrase-final creaky voice, which is acoustically similar to coda-related glottalisation? This study therefore explored the differential effects of phrase position on the production of glottalisation. Phrase-medially (where phrase-final creaky voice is not expected to occur), results confirmed previous findings that glottalisation cues coda stop voicelessness and that it does so more frequently for younger compared to older speakers. In phrase-final position, rates of glottalisation increased, but older speakers appeared more similar to younger speakers in use of glottalisation, suggesting that the change towards the increased use of glottalisation may be nearing completion in this prosodic position. Younger speakers appear to represent a more advanced stage of the change extending the use of glottalisation from phrase-final to phrase-medial position.

English has multiple potential acoustic cues to coda stop voicing, including the duration of the preceding vowel, the coda closure duration, and, in some varieties, glottalisation. Glottalisation associated with coda stops appears to be a recent change to Australian English (AusE) with younger speakers using glottalisation more than older speakers in production. Here we report on a study designed to examine AusE-speaking listeners' perception of cues to coda stop voicing. Listeners were presented with audio stimuli in which preceding vowel duration, coda closure duration, and the relative proportions of the rhyme that these occupy were manipulated and co-varied with the presence or absence of glottalisation. The results show that listeners used preceding vowel duration to cue coda stop voicing, and that coda closure duration was a weaker cue to voicing when not varied in conjunction with preceding vowel duration. In addition, glottalisation facilitated increased perception of coda voicelessness, even when paired with very long preceding vowels, which otherwise signal coda voicing. Although age-related differences in production have previously been reported, we found that both older and younger listeners used glottalisation similarly in perception. ABSTRACTObjectives:A shift toward public health responses to dementia, raises questions about the most appropriate approaches to specific population groups. We examined perspective and age as elements in effective campaigning. Implications from the standpoint of the recipient are drawn for public health education and practice., Design: In-depth semi-structured face-to-face and telephone interview with self-selected participants recruited via adverts, contact with provider organizations and cards placed in retail and service settings. Questions focused on attitudes to dementia and expectations of public campaigning and education., Setting: Community-dwelling adults were interviewed across five Australian states., Participants: A total of 111 people from 5 target groups: people with dementia (n = 19), carers (n = 28), care work and service professionals from healthcare (n = 21), social work (n = 23) and commercial service professions (n = 20) involving people in younger adulthood (n = 13), early midlife (n = 23), later midlife (n = 54), and older age (n = 21)., Measurements: All interviews were transcribed and analyzed thematically by three researchers, reaching consensus before coding and further analysis in NVivo. Narrative analysis of transcripts included 330 topics relating to 6 main areas of focus., Results: Attitudes and views on effective future campaigning reflected a desire for greater social inclusion, but did not focus on prevention and health services. Professionals focused on increasing interpersonal skills, people with dementia on normalization, and carers on awareness-raising., Conclusions: Public health campaigning and education in relation to dementia, could benefit from closer consideration of perspective and age of recipient in intervention design. Interpersonal skills and social inclusion were identified as key issues.

Objective: To explore the occupational voice use and vocal health of elite football coaches., Study Design: This pilot study explored coaches' voice use patterns and vocal demands across workplace environments. Each coach's experiences of voice symptoms and voice problems were also investigated., Methods: Twelve Australian professional football coaches participated in a mixed-methods data collection approach. Data were collected through acoustic voice measurement (Ambulatory Phonation Monitor), semistructured interviews, and a voice symptom questionnaire (Voice Capabilities Questionnaire)., Results: Acoustic measures suggested heavy vocal loads for coaches during player training. All participants reported experiencing voice symptoms. They also suggested that the structure of their working week, workplace tasks, and vocal demands impacted on their voices. Despite this, participants reported little previous reflection or awareness of what impacted on their voices. Coaches typically did not consider how to support their voices during daily work and discussed experiencing voice symptoms as an inevitable part of their jobs., Conclusions: This study demonstrates that occupational vocal demands may negatively impact on sports coaches' vocal health. This is particularly important, considering coaches' heavy vocal loads across coaching tasks and reported negative occupational vocal health experience. Furthermore, coaches' limited insight into voice use and vocal health management may impact on their vocal performance and health. The purpose of this study was to determine the management options and voice therapy techniques currently being used by practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to treat vocal fold nodules (VFNs) in children. The sources used by SLPs to inform and guide their clinical decisions when managing VFNs in children were also explored. Sixty-two SLPs completed a 23-item web-based survey. Data was analysed using frequency counts, content analyses, and supplementary analyses. SLPs reported using a range of management options and voice therapy techniques to treat VFNs in children. Voice therapy was reportedly the most frequently used management option across all respondents, with the majority of SLPs using a combination of indirect and direct voice therapy techniques. When selecting voice therapy techniques, the majority of SLPs reported that they did not use the limited external evidence available to guide their clinical decisions. Additionally, the majority of SLPs reported that they frequently relied on lower levels of evidence or non-evidence-based sources to guide clinical practice both in the presence and absence of higher quality evidence. Further research needs to investigate strategies to remove the barriers that impede SLPs use of external evidence when managing VFNs in children.

This study explored the inter-relationships among state and trait anxiety, occupational stress, perfectionism, aspiration, and music performance anxiety in a group of elite operatic chorus artists employed full-time by a national opera company. The chorus artists reported higher trait anxiety, higher occupational role concerns, and higher occupational personal strain than normative samples. Higher scores on personal resources were associated with the higher scores on trait anxiety. It appears that these resources were used adaptively to manage anxiety. High trait anxiety was also associated with high personal strain in the work environment. Anxiety was not related to occupational roles or issues related to the physical environment or working conditions. These results suggest that while trait anxiety and music performance anxiety were closely associated, occupational stress makes a separate contribution to the quality of working life experienced by elite choral artists.

A complaint commonly heard from patients is that their doctor does not have the time to listen to them, yet in spite of all the recent technological advances, good primary and continuing care still depends on how the physician listens to his patient. This does not require expensive instruments, but does require time and an alert and interested listener trained to appreciate the significance of his patient's story. This article is an attempt to consider some aspects of the listening process.
