Flue gas desulfurisation is a prerequisite for successful CO2 capture in coal‐fired power stations utilising aqueous amine absorbents. For nations like Australia, where there is nonexistence of mandatory flue gas desulfurisation, this increases the cost for power plants retrofitting CO2 capture. The CSIRO's CS‐Cap process, a potentially low cost method for combined CO2 and SO2 capture, provides an alternate sulfur management solution to such plants. The CS‐Cap process, however, results in high sulfur‐loaded amines that require continuous regeneration to retain cost benefits. Reactive crystallisation by KOH addition is shown to be successful in removing the bulk of the sulfate from aqueous amines without any additional heating or cooling requirements. Increasing initial sulfate loading by amine recycling initially improves sulfate removal efficiency, up to the postsaturation level where the systems ionic strength determines further sulfate solubility. Oxidative amine degradation had no significant effect on the precipitation efficiency or purity of K2SO4 crystals apart from their slight discoloration. The behaviour of the residual potassium in these regenerated aqueous amines needs further investigation as it could lead to unwanted precipitation inside the absorber column and other parts of the process. Introduction: Antenatal maternal magnesium sulfate (MgSO 4 ) administration is a proven efficacious neuroprotective treatment reducing the risk of cerebral palsy (CP) among infants born preterm. Identification of the neuroprotective component with target plasma concentrations could lead to neonatal treatment with greater efficacy and accessibility., Methods and Analysis: This is a prospective observational cohort study, in three tertiary Australian centres. Participants are preterm infants, irrespective of antenatal MgSO 4 exposure, born in 2013-2020 at 24 +0 to 31 +6 weeks gestation, and followed up to 2 years corrected age (CA) (to September 2023). 1595 participants are required (allowing for 17% deaths/loss to follow-up) to detect a clinically significant reduction (30% relative risk reduction) in CP when sulfate concentration at 7 days of age is 1 SD above the mean.A blood sample is collected on day 7 of age for plasma sulfate and magnesium measurement. In a subset of participants multiple blood and urine samples are collected for pharmacokinetic studies, between days 1-28, and in a further subset mother/infant blood is screened for genetic variants of sulfate transporter genes.The primary outcome is CP. Surviving infants are assessed for high risk of CP at 12-14 weeks CA according to Prechtl's Method to assess General Movements. Follow-up at 2 years CA includes assessments for CP, cognitive, language and motor development, and social/behavioural difficulties.Multivariate analyses will examine the association between day 7 plasma sulfate/magnesium concentrations with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. A population pharmacokinetic model for sulfate in the preterm infant will be created using non-linear mixed-effects modelling., Ethics and Dissemination: The study has been approved by Mater Misericordiae Ltd Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC/14/MHS/188). Introduction: Glucosamine dietary supplements are commonly used for the management of osteoarthritis (OA). However, clinical trials have reported varying outcomes with regard to joint function and disease progression. One of the possible reasons for variability in observed effects of glucosamine could be that, unlike prescription drugs, the quality of manufactured dietary supplements is not closely monitored in many countries. Therefore, there is the possibility that the actual amount of glucosamine present in a dietary supplement is different from that claimed on the label. The quality control of glucosamine supplements is further complicated by the unavailability of a simple and effective analytical method for the analysis of glucosamine. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a simple analytical method that could be easily adapted by the pharmaceutical industry for routine analysis of glucosamine. Aims: To develop a novel high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the quantification of glucosamine, and determine the amount of glucosamine present in a sample of dietary supplements commercially available in Australia and India. Methods: Chromatographic separation of glucosamine was achieved using a zwitter-ionic hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography column with a mobile phase consisting of 60% acetonitrile and 40% of 85 mM ammonium acetate, at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min and column temperature 40°C. The developed method was validated for intra- and inter-day linearity, accuracy, precision, and reproducibility. The newly-developed method was subsequently used to analyse 12 glucosamine supplements. Results: The developed method was selective for glucosamine, which had a retention time of 5.9 min. The standard curve was linear with a correlation coefficient (r2) exceeding 0.99, over the range of 10–200 μg/mL for glucosamine. The relative standard deviations for intra- and inter-day accuracy, precision and reproducibility were all less than 4%. The amount of glucosamine determined in six Australian and six Indian glucosamine supplements ranged between 98.7–101.7% and 85.9–101.8% of the labelled values, respectively. Discussion: Unlike previous HPLC methods, this newly-developed HPLC technique does not require pre-derivatisation and can separate glucosamine from both hydrochloride and sulphate salts, and from other amino sugars, such as chondroitin sulphate present in dietary supplements. This simple and effective technique can be employed by analytical laboratories for the quality control of glucosamine dietary supplements. Conclusion: The current study has developed a new analytical technique using HPLC-Corona CAD, which can analyse underivatised glucosamine hydrochloride and sulphate within 6 minutes. Using the novel assay, we confirmed that unlike the tested Australian dietary supplements, only half of the tested Indian products had a glucosamine content within ±10% of what was claimed on the label. Cyanide poisoning is uncommon, but generates interest because of the presumed utility of an antidote immediately available in those areas with a high risk of cyanide exposure. As part of its regular review of guidelines, the Australian Resuscitation Council conducted a systematic review of the human evidence for the use of various proposed cyanide antidotes, and a narrative review of the relevant pharmacological and animal studies. There have been no relevant comparative or placebo-controlled human trials. Nine case series were identified. Treatment with hydroxocobalamin was reported in a total of 361 cases. No serious adverse effects of hydroxocobalamin were reported, and many patients with otherwise presumably fatal poisoning survived. Sodium thiosulphate use was reported in two case series, similarly with no adverse effects. Treatment with a combination of sodium nitrite, amyl nitrite and sodium thiosulphate was reported in 74 patients, with results indistinguishable from those of hydroxocobalamin and sodium thiosulphate. No case series using dicobalt edetate or 4-dimethylaminophenol were identified, but successful use in single cases has been reported. Hydroxocobalamin and sodium thiosulphate differ from alternatives in having negligible adverse effects, and on the basis of current evidence are the antidotes of choice. The indications for the use of an antidote, the requirements for supportive care and a recommended approach for workplaces where there is a risk of cyanide poisoning are presented. This study proposed and validated a method integrating in situ hydrotalcite precipitation (Virtual Curtain™ (VC) technology) with bioprocess for treating a cyanide (CN)-augmented (ca. 5 mg-CN L -1 ) sulfate-laden neutral mine drainage, from a waste rock dump (WD2) of an Australian gold mine. Efficacies of various carbon (C) sources (ethanol, lactate, and two natural substrates; Eucalyptus wood sawdust (EW) and Typha biomass (TB)) for promoting microbial reduction in both: CN-augmented WD2 water and VC-treated CN-augmented WD2 water were assessed in a 60-days microcosms study at 30 °C. The microcosms were monitored over time for pH, redox potential, dissolved hydrogen sulfide, chloride, nitrite, nitrate, sulfate, phosphate, biogas production, dissolved organic carbon, total dissolved nitrogen, and dissolved CN. The VC treatment removed a range of metals (Mg, Ni and Zn) and metalloid Se from the CN-augmented WD2 water to below detection. Other elements substantially reduced in concentration included Ba, F, Si and U. However, the VC treatment did not remove substantial nitrate, sulfate or CN. Microcosm trials revealed that the indigenous microbial community in WD2 could effectively denitrify and reduce sulfate, with TB was the most efficient C source for promoting sulfate and CN removal; whereas, EW facilitated only marginally higher sulfate reduction compared with controls. The highest sulfate reduction rate (76 g-SO 4 2- m -3 d -1 ) was achieved with VC-treated water amended with TB, indicating that VC pre-treatment was beneficial. Further, all treatments amended with external C, facilitated 100% removal of dissolved CN after 60 days, whereas only partial (65%) CN removal was recorded in the control. Abstract: The biogeochemistry of a tropical shoal bay (Melville Bay, Australia) impacted by the effluent release, precipitation, and deposition of hydrotalcite from an alumina refinery was studied in both wet and dry seasons. Within the deposition zone, sulfate reduction dominated benthic carbon cycling accounting for ≈100% of total microbial activity, with rates greater than those measured in most other marine sediments. These rapid rates of anoxic metabolism resulted in high rates of sulfide and ammonium production and low C:S ratios, implying significant preservation of S in stable sulfide minerals. Rates of total microbial activity were significantly less in control sediments of equivalent grain size, where sulfate reduction accounted for ≈50% of total benthic metabolism. Rates of planktonic carbon cycling overlying the deposition zone were also greater than those measured in the control areas of southern Melville Bay. At the sediment surface, productive algal and cyanobacterial mats helped stabilize the sediment surface and oxidize sulfide to sulfate to maintain a fully oxygenated water-column overlying the impacted zone. The mats utilized a significant fraction of dissolved inorganic N and P released from the seabed; some nutrients escaped to the water-column such that benthic regeneration of NH4 + and PO4 3− accounted for 100% and 42% of phytoplankton requirements for N and P, respectively. These percentages are high compared to other tropical coastal environments and indicate that benthic nutrient recycling may be a significant factor driving water-column production overlying the deposition zone. With regard to remediation, it is recommended that the seabed not be disturbed as attempts at removal may result in further environmental problems and would require specific assessment of the proposed removal process. Abstract: A number of studies have shown that methanogens are active in the presence of sulfate under some conditions. This phenomenon is especially exemplified in carbonate sediments of the southern Australian continental margin. Three sites cored during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 182 in the Great Australian Bight have high concentrations of microbially-generated methane and hydrogen sulfide throughout almost 500m of sediments. In these cores, the sulfate-reducing and methanogenic zones overlap completely; that is, the usual sulfate-methane transition zone is absent. Amino acid racemization data show that the gassy sediments consist of younger carbonates than the low-gas sites. High concentrations of the reduced gases also occur in two ODP sites on the margin of the Bahamas platform, both of which have similar sedimentary conditions to those of the high-gas sites of Leg 182. Co-generation of these reduced gases results from an unusual combination of conditions, including: (1) a thick Quaternary sequence of iron-poor carbonate sediments, (2) a sub-seafloor brine, and (3) moderate amounts of organic carbon. The probable explanation for the co-generation of hydrogen sulfide and methane in all these sites, as well as in other reported environments, is that methanogens are utilizing non-competitive substrates to produce methane within the sulfate-reducing zone. Taken together, these results form the basis of a new model for sulfate reduction and methanogenesis in marine sediments. The biogeochemical end-members of the model are: (1) minimal sulfate reduction, (2) complete sulfate reduction followed by methanogenesis, and (3) overlapping sulfate reduction and methanogenesis with no transition zone. Abstract: Microscopic pyrites with low 34S/32S ratios in ~3.47-Gyr-old sedimentary barites from North Pole, Australia have been interpreted as evidence for microbial sulfate reduction and/or sulfur disproportionation in the early Archean. We show that these microscopic sulfides have similar to slightly less negative Δ33S and slightly more negative Δ36S values compared to the enclosing sulfate crystals. This finding is consistent with a primary mass-independent signature overprinted by biological sulfate reduction, as calibrated by previous experimental laboratory culture studies. However, it is inconsistent with an overprint by abiological sulfate reduction or sulfur disproportionation, as predicted by isotope exchange theory and laboratory culture studies. Thus, our multiple sulfur isotope measurements support the contention that sulfate-reducing microbes had evolved by ~3.47 billion years ago. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Transformation of various sulphur forms, including inherent and added pyrite, sulphates (CaSO4 and FeSO4) and organic sulphur, during pyrolysis of an Australian lignite was studied using TGA, TGA-MS and a fixed bed reactor, supplemented by sulphur form analysis. It was shown that hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and a small quantity of sulphur dioxide (SO2) were released during the pyrolysis of the pyrite-lignite blend. However, only SO2 was detected during the pyrolysis of the lignite with high pyrite content. Inorganic matter was found to help retaining some of the inorganic sulphur, including pyrite, in the char. Inherent sulphates decomposed at much lower temperatures than the added sulphates, releasing SO2 rather than H2S. The inherent sulphates in the lignite were dominated by iron sulphates which started to decompose and release SO2 at around 500K and all sulphate had been decomposed at 1073K. The retention of organic sulphur in the high organic sulphur lignite was higher than in its acid washed lignite sample, due to the interaction between inherent inorganic matter with the organic sulphur retaining the organic sulphur in the solid phase. SO2 was the only sulphur gas produced during pyrolysis of acid washed lignite. A comprehensive mechanism of sulphur transformation during pyrolysis of lignite was proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concentration of chromate (soluble, sodium sulphate extractable and total) was determined in samples of Australian cement, and the effect of addition of ferrous sulphate to cement was assessed. An outbreak of anticonvulsant intoxication occurred in epileptic patients in Australia during 1968-9. All affected patients studied in Brisbane were taking one brand of phenytoin. In 87% of them the blood phenytoin levels were above the therapeutic range. Reduction of phenytoin dosage relieved the intoxication in all patients. The excipient in the responsible phenytoin capsules had been changed several months before the outbreak, and this change was probably related causally to the altered blood phenytoin concentrations.
