With projections from the Australian federal government indicating an impending exacerbation of the teacher shortage by 2025, it is timely to explore potential approaches that could help mitigate this imminent national crisis. In teaching, there is an historical tendency for the teaching profession to attract more women than men and this study therefore aims to analyse trends in female completion rates of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) degrees. The study objective was to identify the specific teaching degree levels (undergraduate and postgraduate) and modes of attendance that are most likely to continue attracting women to pursue careers in teaching. This research relies on non-identifiable open access data obtained from Australian ITE providers between 2001 and 2021, which have been collected by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment. The study findings reveal an upward trend in female completions of ITE programs offered through external and multimodal study modes, while the internal mode of attendance show a decline. These findings hold significant implications for policy and practice, suggesting the need to enhance the accessibility of external and multimodal ITE degrees for women.

Trans and non-binary youth (TNBY) face high levels of interpersonal and social adversity as well as disproportionate rates of mental health issues such as depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation. Among protective factors, context plays a key role. In addition to parental support, access to gender-affirming medical care begins to emerge as crucial for young people needed them. This paper compares, through thematic analysis, the experiences of TNBY with regard to access and experiences to care in Canada, Switzerland, England, and Australia. It identifies similarities and differences in barriers to access to care, as well as impacts of gender affirming care on young people and their well-being. The article concludes with a discussion on the importance of prompt and easier access to gender-affirming medical care, of training of professionals, and a hypothesis about the role of context in TNBY well-being.

Using the concept of a developmental lens (Brighton, 2007; Caskey & Anfara, 2014; Davis, 2006; J-F, Pullen, & Carroll, 2013; National Middle School Association, 2010; Peterson, 2010), this article focuses on young teenage students' perceptions of teachers. School teachers play an important role in the educational development of teenagers but little is known about how teachers cater for teenage students' social, emotional, physical and cognitive developmental domains. Even less is known about teenage students' perceptions of their teachers. The current study asked a cohort of Year 9 students in a secondary school in Brisbane, Australia (N=182) to comment on what they "liked" about their teachers. The students' responses were mapped against each of the four developmental domains. Analysis of the data showed that students' emotional and social domains were more salient than their physical and cognitive domains. Specifically, the young teenage students reported liking their teachers when the teachers' were emotionally positive and socially accommodating. The findings of this paper are discussed via a developmental lens with regard to the implications for teacher education.

Educators around the world have been challenged to adapt their teaching and pastoral care rapidly in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In this article, we, the academic members of the Chemistry Education and Communication Research Theme (CECR) from the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney, reflect on the challenges and successes over the course of this most unusual semester. We have included discussions on the specific tools and techniques we employed, in light of the available literature, across the range of modes in which we teach, including lectures, tutorials, and laboratories. As many of us prepare to begin or continue teaching, we hope the experiences and lessons we have learned can offer some assistance to our disciplinary colleagues around the world.

In chemistry curricula, both the role of the laboratory program and the method of assessment used are subject to scrutiny and debate. The ability to identify clearly defined competencies for the chemistry laboratory program is crucial, given the numerous other disciplines that rely on foundation-level chemistry knowledge and practical skills. In this report, we describe the design, implementation, results, and feedback obtained on a competency-based assessment model recently introduced into the first-year laboratory program at an Australian university. Previously, this laboratory program was assessed via a quantitative, criterion-referenced assessment model. At the core of this new model was a set of competency criteria relating to skills-acquisition, chemical knowledge and application of principles, safety in the laboratory, as well as professionalism and teamwork. By design, these criteria were aligned with the learning outcomes of the course and the degree itself, as well as local accrediting bodies. Qualitative and quantitative feedback from students (and staff) obtained before and after the implementation of this new model suggested this approach provided an enhanced learning experience enabling a greater focus on the acquisition of fundamental laboratory skills and techniques.

The Melbourne Study of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy examined the implementation, lived experience, and perceived therapeutic gains of psychoanalytic psychotherapy in a low‐cost, private‐sector community clinic. A first in Australia, this 8‐year demonstration project allowed naturalistic study of the impact and process of intensive, long‐term, time‐limited psychoanalytic psychotherapy delivered to self‐referred adults by clinicians with a common theoretical frame of practice. Presented in three papers, the research employed the RE‐AIM planning and evaluation framework, using complementary quantitative and qualitative methods, to study the psychotherapy service in terms of Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance. This first paper reports the Reach of the program to be 67% for those presenting for assessment for psychoanalytic psychotherapy, with Adoption of the full 2‐year treatment program being 60%. Improvements in mental health and life functioning provided quantitative evidence of Effectiveness for those completing the 2‐year treatment program, with Maintenance at 8‐month follow‐up. Patient age, gender and personality characteristics did not modify these improvements. In‐depth qualitative exploration of patient and psychotherapist perspectives regarding the psychotherapy is reported in the second paper highlighting expectations, experience and benefits of the psychotherapy. The third companion paper presents the qualitative findings concerning factors experienced as facilitating or challenging therapeutic progress. Each of the three related papers amplifies understandings of how low‐cost, long‐term but time‐limited psychoanalytic psychotherapy can be implemented in the community with adults otherwise unable to afford such treatment, and discusses lessons learned. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is among society's most pernicious and impactful social issues, causing substantial harm to health and wellbeing, and impacting women's employability, work performance, and career opportunity. Organizations play a vital role in addressing IPV, yet, in contrast to other employee- and gender-related social issues, very little is known regarding corporate responses to IPV. IPV responsiveness is a specific demonstration of corporate social responsibility and is central to advancing gender equity in organizations. In this paper, we draw upon unique data on the IPV policies and practices of 191 Australian listed corporations between 2016 and 2019, that collectively employ around 1.5 M employees. Providing the first large-scale empirical analysis of corporate IPV policies and practices, we theorise that listed corporations' IPV responsiveness reflects institutional and stakeholder pressures which are multifaceted and central to corporate social responsibility. Our findings identify greater IPV responsiveness among larger corporations, as well as those corporations with higher proportions of women middle managers, greater financial resources, and more advanced employee consultation on gender issues. This paper concludes that there is a need for further research on corporate IPV responsiveness, to further illuminate corporate motivations, organizational support processes, and employee experiences. Advances in science education research have the potential to improve the way students learn to perform scientific interpretations and understand science concepts. We developed active, collaborative activities to teach skills in manipulating flow cytometry data using FlowJo software. Undergraduate students were given compensated clinical flow cytometry listmode output (FCS) files and asked to design a gating strategy to diagnose patients with different hematological malignancies on the basis of their immunophenotype. A separate cohort of research trainees was given uncompensated data files on which they performed their own compensation, calculated the antibody staining index, designed a sequential gating strategy, and quantified rare immune cell subsets. Student engagement, confidence, and perceptions of flow cytometry were assessed using a survey. Competency against the learning outcomes was assessed by asking students to undertake tasks that required understanding of flow cytometry dot plot data and gating sequences. The active, collaborative approach allowed students to achieve learning outcomes not previously possible with traditional teaching formats, for example, having students design their own gating strategy, without forgoing essential outcomes such as the interpretation of dot plots. In undergraduate students, favorable perceptions of flow cytometry as a field and as a potential career choice were correlated with student confidence but not the ability to perform flow cytometry data analysis. We demonstrate that this new pedagogical approach to teaching flow cytometry is beneficial for student understanding and interpretation of complex concepts. It should be considered as a useful new method for incorporating complex data analysis tasks such as flow cytometry into curricula.

The increasing use of information and communication technology (ICT) in schools has been largely explored in relation to how students' use ICT at school. In addition students' lives and experiences with technology beyond school have also begun to be explored. However, the nexus between the two is still an underdeveloped research area. Anecdotally we know that technology use either at home or at school affects the other. This paper reports on a contemporary case study-using structural equation modeling (SEM) of students' ICT use for school and home and their self-perceived competence with technology across the domains of home and school. The study found that students who learn to use certain forms of technology at home bring that "home learning" to school and vice versa. From an educational perspective teachers should therefore not be underestimating the value of the technologies that students are using at home for pleasure for use in the classroom. Furthermore the study found that schools played a major role in enhancing students' confidence around using ICT whilst the home environment provided opportunities to practice with that technology and facilitate technology-enhanced communication. Both the home and school domains enhanced the students' ICT skills and had the effect of making the student a more independent learner and user of technology.

Background: To better target rural background and rurally interested applicants during medical school admission, it is increasingly common for rural medical programs to include multiple mini-interview (MMI) scenarios designed to screen for rural interest. It remains unclear whether the inclusion of regionally/rurally focused MMI scenarios positively impacts the selection of rural background applicants and evidence is limited regarding why rural background applicants may perform worse on the MMI. Therefore, this study explored how rural and metropolitan applicants prepare for and perceive the MMI for admission to a regional medical pathway. Methods: A mixed-methods survey was sent to provisional entry regional pathway medical school applicants who had completed an MMI. The survey was distributed before any offers of admission had been released. Results: Rural applicants spent less time and money preparing for the MMI and felt less prepared (P < 0.05). However, time and money spent, and resources used to prepare were not associated with feeling more prepared (all P > 0.05). Respondents mostly felt that the MMI process aligned with their expectations (83%), is fair (64%), and helps a rural program select the most suitable applicants (61%). Rural applicants generally felt that they had an advantage over other applicants (61%) while most metropolitan applicants did not (23%; P = 0.002). Discussion: Applicants to a regional medical pathway are generally supportive of the MMI process. It appears valuable for applicants to prepare for the MMI by understanding the format and requirements; however, investing substantial time and money does not underpin feeling better prepared. During adolescence (e.g. ages 13-15) communication and connectedness with peers is an essential part of adolescents' self-formation; mobiles phones are a conduit that maintains both communication and connectedness among adolescents whereby social interactions and connectedness are not limited by place, context or time. To study mobile phone usage among adolescents, grade 9 (n= 218) middle-school students in Queensland, Australia were surveyed using a self-developed questionnaire. The purpose was to explore the relationship between mobile phone use and developmental frameworks. The results suggest that young people use their mobile phones as a way of expressing their sense of self and as a means of communicating quickly between peers.

Electronic supported assessment or e-Assessment is a field of growing importance, but it has yet to make a significant impact in the Australian higher education sector (Byrnes & Ellis, 2006). Current computer based assessment models focus on the assessment of knowledge rather than deeper understandings, using multiple choice type questions, and blocking access to more sophisticated software tools. This study explored a new system based on a customised version of an open source live CD, based on Ubuntu which was used with three groups of pre-service teachers (N=270). Students had divided opinions about using computers or paper for their examinations, but prior exposure to computer based assessment was a highly significant factor for preferring the computer medium. Reflecting upon their experience, students found the noise of computer keyboards a distraction during the eExamination and preferred fewer on-screen windows. The new system allowed eExaminations to be taken securely on student owned laptop computers and was supervised by invigilators without specialist information technology skills. An evaluation study, assessing the pedagogical and instructional design (e-pedagogy) effectiveness of online continuing professional education (CPE) courses offered by a large Australasian CPE provider to health care professionals (HCPs). The study used a naturalistic theory approach in conjunction with a multilevel evaluation to examine the impact of Web-based learning on over 300 HCPs. Several evaluative criteria (participant satisfaction, learning achievement, self-reported practice performance change and e-pedagogical courseware characteristics) were assessed by various qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The evaluation revealed that learning online was an effective means for increasing CPE knowledge (p < 0.05) and improving self-reported practice performance change (p < 0.05). Additionally the study revealed that of the 42 courses examined, those which included a pedagogically scaffolded clinical or diagnostic learning support tool (57 per cent) resulted in an increased self-reported practice performance change compared with those courses which did not include the scaffolded support tool (Z[subscript obs] 3.757). Participants were very satisfied with the self-paced instruction, timing of both the facilitator and server-generated course comments and the amount of learning content which could be undertaken in a learning sitting.

The Spatz neutron beam instrument is the second time‐of‐flight neutron reflectometer to be installed at the OPAL research reactor. The instrument was formerly the V18 BioRef reflectometer at the BER‐II reactor in Berlin and was transferred to Australia in 2016. Subsequently the instrument was re‐installed in the neutron guide hall of the OPAL reactor at the end position of the CG2B cold‐neutron guide and recommissioned. The instrument performance has not been compromised by the move, with reflectivity achieved down to 10−7 and good counting statistics within a reasonable time frame using a wavelength range of 2–20 Å. Several different samples at the solid–air interface and the solid–liquid interface have been measured to demonstrate the instrument's capabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the closure of the BER-II Reactor in Berlin, the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) started to find new homes for their suite of world-class neutron scattering instruments. In September 2015, it was agreed that the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) would take ownership of the V18 BioRef Neutron Reflectometer. One year later, there was a joint team from ANSTO and HZB dismantling BioRef and packing the parts into shipping containers for the long journey to Australia. The instrument arrived at ANSTO in February 2017 and was renamed Spatz, which is German for sparrow. The process of installing Spatz in the neutron guide hall of the OPAL Research Reactor began shortly after and was completed in October 2018. The hot commissioning process has demonstrated that BioRef will continue to have a long and successful life down under as Spatz. This article describes the steps that were followed to bring BioRef from Germany to Australia and highlights key considerations needed when taking such an undertaking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Access to medical care is significant for many transgender young people and their families, which involves interactions with healthcare professionals. While a trans affirming model is used across Australian paediatric gender clinics, this does not automatically mean that all transgender young people and their parents experience the care they receive as affirming. This article considers the experiences and views of transgender young people (aged 11–17) and their parents in relation to healthcare professionals inside and outside of gender clinics in Australia. Ten qualitative interviews were conducted with parent–child dyads in two Australian states. Key themes relating to healthcare professionals were: differing levels of healthcare professional knowledge and affirmation, quality of service is dependent on individual healthcare professionals, and lack of connected services and referral pathways. The discussion explores specific issues arising from the findings that suggest implications for training for healthcare professionals so as to be better equipped to provide trans affirming clinical care. The last decades have witnessed a rapid development of green building developments at a global scale, as a measure to deal with various challenges related to climate change especially environmental issues. Australia is no exception. It is not unusual that extra resources such as cost are required for developing green buildings compared to conventional buildings. To justify extra upfront resources required for green building developments, a variety of tools have been developed such as life cycle assessment and life cycle costing. These two tools have been used in some projects in order to evaluate the cost and benefits of green buildings from a life cycle perspective. However, the uptake of life cycle assessment and life cycle costing are generally slow in the construction industry. This paper presents a critical review of green building evaluation from life cycle perspective. In particular, the use of life cycle assessment and life cycle costing in green building evaluation in Australia is reviewed. Knowledge gap is presented and future research agenda is proposed. Office buildings constitute a significant proportion of the non-residential building stock. In recent years, various rating tools have been developed to foster green office building development. The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has developed the Green Star - Office rating tools for this purpose. There are an increasing number of stakeholders adopting these tools to showcase their efforts in sustainable development. This research focuses on the challenges and barriers in obtaining GBCA ratings in Australian Office buildings. To accomplish this, the scoring sheets from the rating of 264 certified office buildings were collected and critically analysed. The findings indicated that credits related to the attributes of innovation, ecology and energy are comparatively difficult to achieve. It was also found in this study that a large number of projects did not apply for the specific credits of refrigerant global warming potential, re-use of façade, topsoil and fill removal from site, and individual comfort control. This study provides a useful reference to both the property developer and the Green Building Council of Australia for green building developments in the future. Using temporal or spatial analogues is a well developed technique for comparative studies that can shed light on past environments or inform changes in practice by reference to analogue locations. Recently, studies have begun to employ analogue techniques to inform on future conditions under climate change. This paper explores the breadth of application of analogue approaches and seeks to question whether there are the limits to the way in which the technique can be applied. We consider the case of policy in a wide range of land use relevant factors, using case studies of three Australian states. The analysis examines whether existing policy in land use planning, housing, infrastructure, health and ecological services in analogue communities can inform future policy in target communities, so as to fast track their policy development as climate changes. We highlight a number of situations where evidence supports the argument but we conclude that, over the full spectrum of policy, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that analogue approaches are valuable as a policy development tool. Climate change predictions indicate more extremes in weather conditions in the coming decades with more frequent and severe heat waves in certain locations including Australia. It is likely that the more vulnerable members of the community will be at risk during heat waves in the future from both health and financial perspectives. The trend towards fully air conditioned larger homes has already seen very large peaks in electricity demand during past heat waves. Electricity prices have increased substantially in recent years and will increase further due to greater peak demand and environmental levies. To manage the risks to dwelling occupants during heat waves, research has been carried out to determine methods of promoting adaptive behaviours through residential design. This paper describes the concept of a “cool retreat” within a dwelling which can provide comfort conditions with minimal cooling costs during heat wave periods. The cool retreat concept is shown to have its origins in the past in a number of locations around the world subject to hot conditions. Various cool retreat configurations have been analysed for thermal performance, demonstrating the viability of this approach for dealing with extreme conditions in the future. It is well recognized that the construction industry is one of the largest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. This research investigates achieving carbon neutrality in commercial developments. A case study approach was adopted to gain an in-depth analysis of the first commercial building claimed to be carbon neutral in Australia. Key participants were interviewed, and this was followed by a review of the project specification. The analysis focuses on practices to achieve carbon neutrality in commercial developments, such as standard setting, measurement, materials selection, construction techniques, and knowledge. Results showed that a carbon-neutral commercial building can be achieved even though there are a number of challenges, such as lack of maturity in working definitions and subsequent standards to measure carbon neutrality. The selection of appropriate materials and relevant knowledge are critical in achieving carbon neutrality in commercial building developments. Reduced water consumption is one of the objectives of many towns and cities as part of the trend towards more sustainable settlements. Information on comprehensive water usage is required for formulating conservation and management strategies. Whilst buildings are directly responsible for only 12% of global water consumption, they can indirectly account for a much more significant proportion of total water demand due to the production of construction materials as well as the goods and services purchased by their occupants. This paper analyses both direct and indirect water consumption of a conventional Australian residential building and its occupants over a 50-year period. Input–output analysis is used to comprehensively determine total water usage. The results show that the direct water consumption to operate the house is only 6.4% of the total, with a further proportion embodied in the materials of the dwelling. The water embodied in consumable items, especially food, is the most significant, representing 46% of total household water demand. Policies for minimizing water consumption should address more than just direct water usage and the findings used to influence the design of urban living in the future. La réduction de la consommation en eau est l'un des objectifs de nombreuses villes, grandes et moins grandes, dans le cadre de la tendance actuelle à aller vers des habitations plus durables. Il est nécessaire de pouvoir disposer d'informations sur l'ensemble des usages qui sont faits de l'eau pour pouvoir formuler des stratégies de préservation et de gestion. Alors que les bâtiments ne sont directement responsables que de 12% de la consommation mondiale en eau, ils peuvent représenter indirectement une part beaucoup plus importante de la demande totale en eau, du fait de la fabrication des matériaux de construction comme des biens et services achetés par leurs occupants. La consommation en eau directe aussi bien qu'indirecte est analysée sur une période de 50 ans, en utilisant comme étude de cas un immeuble résidentiel australien classique et ses occupants. L'analyse des entrées et des sorties est pleinement utilisée pour déterminer l'usage total de l'eau. Les résultats montrent que la consommation directe en eau pour faire fonctionner la maison ne s'élève qu'à 6,4% du total, une part supplémentaire virtuelle étant constituée par les matériaux de l'habitation. L'eau virtuelle des produits consommables, en particulier des aliments, est la plus importante, représentant 46% de la demande totale en eau de l'habitation. House price growth in Australia has outstripped income growth to the point where more than one million low and middle income households are now experiencing housing stress. Moreover, social housing provision has been gradually wound back in Australia since the 1980s in favour of a residual model based on tax concessions and subsidies, that has exacerbated the problem. However innovative policies introduced in 2009 by the Australian Government in response to the global economic crisis suggest a change in direction that might offer new, affordable social housing in a difficult economic climate. This paper critically reviews affordable housing policy in Australia and new initiatives such as the National Affordable Housing Agreements. We conclude that current initiatives remain constrained by hastily implemented policies, a 'rush to build' and a reluctance to provide an ongoing commitment to social housing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Some biographies of Henry George give brief accounts of his lecture tour of Australia in 1890, based mainly on his diary and on reports he sent back from Australia for publication in his New York newspaper,The Standard. This study supplements previous accounts with further details of the 48 lectures and 9 Sunday sermons he gave in 38 towns and cities during his 98-day stay in Australia, based on contemporary Australian newspaper reports. The teaching laboratory remains an important environment for developing undergraduate chemists, but the inherent diversity of inorganic chemistry results in less standardised undergraduate curricula than other sub-disciplines. This study surveys the content of advanced (third-year) inorganic chemistry across Australia and reviews experimental materials from 15 universities that offer inorganic laboratory programmes at this level. All institutions offer at least one traditional inorganic experiment, the most common being the preparation and acetylation of ferrocene, spectroscopy and magnetochemistry of nickel coordination compounds and palladium-catalysed cross-couplings. These inorganic classics are complemented by a breadth of non-traditional offerings that often align with institutional research strengths. Academic unit coordinators were also surveyed and their responses interpreted using ASELL (Advancing Science and Engineering through Laboratory Learning) tools. Advanced inorganic laboratory programmes were found to develop students' practical and transferrable skills. Students generally receive guidance from teaching staff in all aspects of experimental work, including planning, development, analysis and communicating conclusions. Academic unit coordinators identified potential improvements that included diversifying student activities in the lab and how they are being assessed. This study investigates the content, scope and approaches to learning in advanced (third-year) inorganic chemistry laboratory curricula at Australian universities. Sustainability is one of the most contested ideologies of our time because everyone acknowledges that it must occur but no one can agree on what needs to change in response. This is unsurprising, because objecting to the goal of sustainability is like objecting to other inherently good goals like peace or freedom. Responses to sustainability exist on a long continuum, with some interpreting sustainability to mean conservation-at-all-costs and reduced economic growth, while others suggest that the market will ensure sustainable outcomes eventually result. Further, sustainability can be easily manipulated to justify predetermined outcomes. There are, indeed, a multitude of conceptual and pragmatic challenges to operating on sustainability, particularly when the scale shifts from a global goal to local action. Using the application of sustainability to affordable housing in Australia as a case study, this article argues that rather than limiting sustainable outcomes, the existence of the sustainability debate which focuses on the many challenges is a positive indicator that sustainability may be attainable.
