Aim: Male dietitians are under‐represented in the global dietetics workforce, including in Australia. This study explores Australian males' experiences as dietitians in the Australian workforce, with the aim to identify influences that initially attracted them to dietetics, as well as barriers that may affect their decision to stay in or leave the profession. Methods: A cross‐sectional, semi‐quantitative web‐based survey was distributed to male dietitians using purposive, snowball sampling. Closed and open‐ended questions were included. Descriptive statistics were generated, and content analysis of free‐text responses identified major themes. Results: Seventy‐one respondents opened the survey link, of which 65 respondents attempted the survey. Fifty‐four (83.1%) respondents agreed that dietetics is female‐dominated. An interest in food and nutrition was the most reported reason for studying dietetics (73.8%). Of the 55 respondents who were not intending to retire in the next 5 years, 15 (27.3%) stated they were somewhat or extremely likely to leave the profession of dietetics. Respondents identified issues that impacted their experiences as a male dietitian, including gender differences, a lack of male role models, barriers to career progression/employment, and perceptions of a lack of respect and impact within healthcare. Conclusions: Australian male dietitians perceive systemic, social, and personal factors that have influenced their career experiences. Greater exposure to prominent male role models may be self‐perpetuating in improving male dietitian recruitment and eventually, retention. A multi‐pronged approach is needed to improve the rate of recruitment of male dietitians, with a role for tertiary education providers and peak dietetics bodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adolescent elite-level footballers are exposed to unique physical and psychological stressors which may increase injury risk, with fluctuating injury prevalence and burden. This study investigates the patterns of injury incidence and burden from 2017 to 2020 within combined pre-, start-of-, mid- and end-of-season and school-holiday phases in U13-U18 Australian male academy players. Injury incidence rate and burden were calculated for medical attention (MA), full and partial time-loss (TL) and non-time-loss (non-TL) injuries. Injury rate ratios (IRR) for injury incidences were assessed using Generalised Linear Mixed Models, and 99% confidence intervals for injury burden differences between phases. MA and non-TL injury incidence rates were higher during pre-season (IRR 1.65, p = 0.01; IRR 2.08, p = 0.02, respectively), and mid-season showed a higher non-TL incidence rate (IRR 2.15, p = 0.02) and burden (69 days with injury/1000 hrs, CI 47–103) compared to end-of-season (25 days with injury/1000 hrs, CI 15–45). MA injury rates and partial TL injury burden were higher during school compared to holiday periods (IRR 0.6, p = 0.04; 61 partial days lost/1000 hrs, CI 35–104; 13 partial days lost/1000 hrs, CI 8–23). Season phase and return-to-school may increase injury risks for elite academy footballers, and considering these phases may assist in developing injury prevention systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Approximately 1 in 20 men are sub-fertile or infertile yet the aetiologies of male infertility remain largely unexplained. It is suggested that lifestyle choices and environmental factors contribute but research is limited. In particular, no study has evaluated early life exposures and subsequent male infertility. To address this knowledge gap, this study aims to characterise a cohort of men with idiopathic infertility and compare their general health, lifestyle choices and environmental exposures from teenage years onwards to men without reproductive abnormalities. Methods: Two groups of men (N = 500 cases; N = 500 controls), matched for age and socio-economic status, will be recruited from fertility clinics around Australia between June 2021 and June 2024. Men will be eligible if they are between 18 and 50 years, with a female partner less than 42 years, and have identified idiopathic male infertility (case) or are part of a couple with diagnosed female factor infertility but with no indication of compromised male fertility (control). Participants will complete an in-depth survey on general health, lifestyle and environmental exposures, reporting from teenage years onwards. An online medical data capture form will be used to gather fertility assessment information from participant medical records. Biological specimens of saliva (all study participants), blood and urine (optional) will be collected and stored for future genetic and epigenetic analysis. Differences in outcome measures between cases and controls will be determined using appropriate between groups comparisons. The relationship between explanatory variables and infertility will be analysed using multilevel modelling to account for clustering within fertility clinics. Discussion: This study addresses an important gap in research on the aetiology of male infertility and will provide a comprehensive profile of the lifestyle and environmental risk factors for male infertility, leading to provision of up-to-date health advice for male teenagers and adults about optimising their fertility. This study will provide important information to clinicians and to inform public policy that will lead to prevention and improved treatment strategies for infertile men. Objective: Height is a significant, yet under-studied dimension of body dissatisfaction in men. The present study examined the relationship between height dissatisfaction, height, muscle and fat dissatisfaction, body ideals, and eating disorder symptoms in men. Participants and methods: Participants were a sample of male undergraduate Australian students (N = 224) who were administered self-report measures of height, muscle, and fat dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms, and muscle and body fat body-ideals, and reported their height. Results: Results showed that height, muscle dissatisfaction, and desired muscularity were important for explaining height dissatisfaction. Additionally, although eating disorder symptoms did not uniquely predict height dissatisfaction, there were small positive correlations between height dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptoms. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of height in male body dissatisfaction and its association with muscular dissatisfaction and desired muscularity, as well as the potential significance of height in male eating disorders. Study Question: Is the metabolic health of men conceived using ICSI different to that of IVF and spontaneously conceived (SC) men?Summary Answer: ICSI-conceived men aged 18-24 years, compared with SC controls, showed differences in some metabolic parameters including higher resting diastolic blood pressure (BP) and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) scores, although the metabolic parameters of ICSI- and IVF-conceived singleton men were more comparable.What Is Known Already: Some studies suggest that IVF-conceived offspring may have poorer cardiovascular and metabolic profiles than SC children. Few studies have examined the metabolic health of ICSI-conceived offspring.Study Design, Size, Duration: This cohort study compared the metabolic health of ICSI-conceived men to IVF-conceived and SC controls who were derived from prior cohorts. Participants included 121 ICSI-conceived men (including 100 singletons), 74 IVF-conceived controls (all singletons) and 688 SC controls (including 662 singletons).Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: Resting systolic and diastolic BP (measured using an automated sphygmomanometer), height, weight, BMI, body surface area and fasting serum metabolic markers including fasting insulin, glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and HOMA-IR were compared between groups. Data were analysed using multivariable linear regression adjusted for various covariates including age and education level.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: After adjusting for covariates, compared to 688 SC controls, 121 ICSI-conceived men had higher diastolic BP (β 4.9, 95% CI 1.1-8.7), lower fasting glucose (β -0.7, 95% CI -0.9 to -0.5), higher fasting insulin (ratio 2.2, 95% CI 1.6-3.0), higher HOMA-IR (ratio 1.9, 95% CI 1.4-2.6), higher HDLC (β 0.2, 95% CI 0.07-0.3) and lower hsCRP (ratio 0.4, 95% CI 0.2-0.7) levels. Compared to 74 IVF-conceived singletons, only glucose differed in the ICSI-conceived singleton men (β -0.4, 95% CI -0.7 to -0.1). No differences were seen in the paternal infertility subgroups.Limitations, Reasons For Caution: The recruitment rate of ICSI-conceived men in this study was low and potential for recruitment bias exists. The ICSI-conceived men, the IVF-conceived men and SC controls were from different cohorts with different birth years and different geographical locations. Assessment of study groups and controls was not contemporaneous, and the measurements differed for some outcomes (BP, insulin, glucose, lipids and hsCRP).Wider Implications Of the Findings: These observations require confirmation in a larger study with a focus on potential mechanisms. Background: Despite diversity initiatives, inequities persist in medicine with negative implications for the workforce and patients. Little is known about workplace inequity in nephrology. Aim: To describe perceptions and experiences of bias by health professionals in the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN), focussing on gender and race. Methods: A web‐based survey of ANZSN members recorded degree of perceived inequity on a Likert scale, ranging from 1 (none) to 5 (complete). Groups were compared using Mann–Whitney U‐test and logistic regression. Comments were synthesised using qualitative methods to explore themes of inequity and pathways to an inclusive future. Results: Of the 620 members of the ANZSN, there were 134 (22%) respondents, of whom 57% were women and 67% were White. The majority (88%) perceived inequities in the workforce. Perceived drivers of inequity were gender (84/113; 75%), carer responsibilities (74/113; 65%) and race (64/113; 56%). Half (74/131) had personally experienced inequity, based on gender in 70% (52/74) and race in 39% (29/75) with perceived discrimination coming from doctors, patients, academics and health administrators. White males were least likely (odds ratio 0.39; 95% confidence interval 0.18–0.90) to experience inequity. Dominant themes from qualitative analysis indicated that the major impacts of inequity were limited opportunities for advancement and lack of formal assistance for those experiencing inequities. Proposed solutions to reduce inequity included normalising the discourse on inequity at an organisational level, with policy changes to ensure diverse representation on committees and in executive leadership positions. Men volunteering to mentor other men is a growing form of social engagement in Australia. Masculine norms associated with not disclosing emotional distress or discussing loneliness are often set aside by participating in these one‐to‐one relationships. Mentors have reported improvement in their well‐being and a desire to contribute more. In this phenomenological study, which draws on hermeneutic methodology, 12 men who voluntarily met and mentored another adult man for a minimum of 6 months participated in a semi‐structured interview. Findings showed non‐judgement and deep listening facilitated a rewarding and personally developmental relationship. Most voluntary mentors experienced substantial changes in their masculine views, particularly with the regard to trust and openness with others. Background: Approximately one fifth of Australian males aged 16+ experience mood, anxiety or substance use disorders in a given year, and suicide by males accounts for three quarters of all suicides annually. However, males with mental health problems are less likely to seek and receive help than their female counterparts. Media campaigns with videos at their core are gaining popularity as a means of promoting help-seeking for mental health difficulties, but few studies have rigorously tested the impact of such videos. This randomised controlled trial tests the effectiveness of a short video promoting help-seeking by Australian men.Methods: This study is an online randomised controlled trial (RCT). Participants will attend an online group orientation session, where they will provide consent to participate and complete a baseline questionnaire (T1). After completion of the T1 questionnaire, participants will be randomised to watch either the intervention or control video on a 1:1 basis. After randomisation, participants will be able to access their allocated video for 1 week. Seven days after T1, participants will again be sent links to the video and to the post-exposure questionnaire (T2). One month after T2, participants will be emailed the follow-up questionnaire (T3). The primary outcome will be change in help-seeking intentions from T1 to T2. Secondary outcomes will be changes in help-seeking intentions from T1 to T3, changes in intentions to encourage other males to seek help, self-reliance, and male depression symptoms from T1 to T2 and from T1 to T3. The cost-effectiveness of the intervention will be evaluated. Participants will also complete questions about their opinions of the video and its effects at T2 and T3.Discussion: Our video-based intervention is designed to promote help-seeking for mental health difficulties among Australian men. If a lack of net harm is shown to be associated with viewing the intervention video, the video will be publicly released and could have broad impacts on individual and community attitudes towards help-seeking for mental health difficulties, and ultimately enhance men's mental health and wellbeing. Objective: To determine the semen quality and reproductive hormones of men conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) compared with men conceived without assisted reproductive technology (ART).Design: Cohort study.Setting: IVF centers in Victoria and the Western Australian Raine Study.Patient(s): Men conceived with IVF/ICSI and men conceived without ART aged 18-25 years.Intervention(s): Clinical review.Main Outcome Measure(s): The primary outcome was the prevalence of severe oligozoospermia (sperm concentration, <5 million/mL). The secondary outcomes were total sperm count, total and progressive motility, total motile count, normal morphology, and serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).Results: There was no difference in the prevalence of severe oligozoospermia between 120 men conceived with IVF/ICSI and 356 men conceived without ART (9% vs. 5.3%). Men conceived with IVF/ICSI had similar sperm concentration, total sperm count, and total motile count but lower mean total (55.3% vs. 60.6%) and progressive (44.7% vs. 53.9%) sperm motility with higher mean normal morphology (8.5% vs. 5.4%). Differences in progressive motility (ß, -9.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], -16.7 - -3.0), normal morphology (ß, 4.3; 95% CI, 3.0-5.7), and proportion with abnormal morphology (adjusted odds ratios, 0.1; 95% CI, 0.04-0.5) remained significant after adjusting for confounders. Men conceived with IVF/ICSI had lower mean FSH (3.3 IU/L) and LH (3.9 IU/L) levels and higher mean testosterone levels (19.1 nmol/L) than controls (4.2 IU/L, 11.0 IU/L, and 16.8 nmol/L).Conclusion: This study of men conceived with IVF/ICSI found similar sperm output to men conceived without ART. Introduction: Adolescent males are at increased risk of mental illness and are reluctant to engage in treatment. This study aims to identify subgroups of help-seeking intentions among a sample of Australian male adolescents.Methods: A sample of 1038 male adolescent sport participants in Australia (age M = 14.69 years, SD = 1.35) reported help-seeking intentions from ten sources and from 'no one'. Latent profile analysis was conducted based on these 11 items. Identified profiles were then compared across mental health measures.Results: Four latent profiles were identified: Low general help-seekers (10.5%), Moderate general help-seekers (46.8%), High general help-seekers (25.5%), High family and friends help-seekers (17.2%). Low, Moderate, and High general help-seekers had uniformly low, moderate, and high intentions to seek help from all sources, respectively. High family and friends help-seekers reported high endorsement of intentions to seek help from intimate partners, friends, parents, and other relatives, but low intentions for other sources. Low general help-seekers had lower intentions to seek help from parents compared to all other profiles. They also had significantly lower perceived family support and higher psychological distress.Conclusions: Low general help-seekers were particularly reluctant to seek help from all sources and at high risk of experiencing psychological difficulties. Their distinct profile offers potential to identify this high-risk group through the use of ratings on the parent help-seeking intentions item. Further research should investigate the predictive utility of this item on help-seeking and mental health, and should consider the influence of masculinity and previous experiences of help-seeking. To determine whether males exhibited a different form of depression to Major Depressive Disorder, 85 male volunteers completed a survey questionnaire about background variables, the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and the Gotland Male Depression Scale (GMDS). Almost 50% of the variance in the GMDS was not accounted for by the SDS, and the sensitivity of the SDS against the GMDS showed that about 15% of those men who were identified as depressed on the GMDS would not be similarly identified on the SDS. Different prevalence rates from the two scales suggested that they were assessing different sets of symptoms of depression. A combined SDS-GMDS scale of 24 items was used to produce a profile of male depression in these men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

APOE genotype has been associated with various age-related outcomes including Alzheimer's disease, frailty, and mortality. In this study, the relationship between health, particularly cognitive function, and APOE was investigated in older men from the Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project (n = 1,616; age 76.9 ± 5.5 years [range 70-97 years]; Australia). Baseline characteristics and survival up to 12 years were determined. Frailty was measured using Cardiovascular Health study (CHS) criteria and Rockwood frailty index, and cognition using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Addenbrookes Cognitive Examination. APOE ε4 was less common in the oldest men and those born in Mediterranean countries. APOE ε2 was beneficially associated with cholesterol, creatinine, gamma-glutamyl transaminase, glucose, and HDL cholesterol while APOE ε4 was adversely associated with cholesterol and albumin. APOE ε4 was associated with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease when adjusted for age and region of birth (ε4 homozygotes Odds ratio (OR) 7.0; ε4 heterozygotes OR 2.4, p < .05), and APOE ε2 had a small positive association with cognition. On multivariate regression, overall cognitive function in the entire cohort was associated with age, country of birth, education, and frailty (all p < .001). APOE was not associated with frailty or survival. In conclusion, age and region of birth influenced distribution of APOE genotype in older men. Although APOE ε4 was associated with Alzheimer's disease, overall cognitive function in the cohort was associated more strongly with frailty than APOE genotype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Syphilis control among men who have sex with men (MSM) would be improved if we could increase the proportion of cases who present for treatment at the primary stage rather than at a later stage, as this would reduce their duration of infectivity. We hypothesized that MSM who practiced receptive anal intercourse were more likely to present with secondary syphilis, compared to MSM who did not practice receptive anal intercourse. Methods In this retrospective analysis of MSM diagnosed with primary or secondary syphilis at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre between 2008 and 2017, we analyzed associations between the stage of syphilis (primary vs secondary) and behavioral data collected by computer-assisted self-interviews. Results There were 559 MSM diagnosed with primary (n = 338) or secondary (n = 221) syphilis. Of these, 134 (24%) men reported not practicing receptive anal sex. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, MSM were more likely to present with secondary rather than primary syphilis if they reported practicing receptive anal intercourse (adjusted odds ratio 3.90; P <.001) after adjusting for age, human immunodeficiency virus status, and condom use. MSM with primary syphilis who did not practice receptive anal intercourse almost always (92%) had their primary syphilis lesion on their penis. Conclusions The finding that MSM who practiced receptive anal intercourse more commonly presented with secondary syphilis—and hence, had undetected syphilis during the primary stage—implies that anorectal syphilis chancres are less noticeable than penile chancres. These men may need additional strategies to improve early detection of anorectal chancres, to reduce their duration of infectivity and, hence, reduce onward transmission. Men who practiced receptive anal intercourse (AI) were more likely to present with secondary syphilis, compared to men who exclusively practiced insertive AI. In this article, four researchers from Australia and South Africa consider why it is important for primary schools to include both male and female teachers. The authors refute previous calls directed by public and political discourse, for male teachers to enhance boy's educational outcomes or to act as role models or father figures. Instead, the authors present a theoretical framework that justifies calls for male teachers at four levels: the child level, the classroom level, the organizational level, and the societal level. While complex barriers may continue to limit male teacher representation, the authors hope that this interdisciplinary framework might stimulate further international scholarly discussions about the interactions between teacher-gender, education, and culture. Objective: Increasing numbers of young Australian men are training and dieting to attain high muscle mass and low body fat and using steroids and performance and image enhancing drugs to expedite this process. This study explored men's identification with a muscularity‐centred subculture and what contributes to the pursuit of masculine body image defined by muscularity. Method: Participants were 14 young men who (a) weight‐trained >3 times per week, (b) used bodybuilding supplements daily, and (c) used/had used steroids/other performance and image enhancing drugs. Results: Interview analysis identified precipitating (e.g., low self‐confidence), perpetuating (e.g., social media pressures), and resultant factors related to strict regime adherence, including simultaneous recreational drug use. This range of influences gives support to a sociocultural framework for explaining the development and maintenance of striving for a muscular ideal among this cohort. Conclusions: Understanding the factors contributing to the attainment of a muscularity‐defined masculine body image is important given the risky health behaviours young men may engage in to reach this ideal. Australia introduced a school-based human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program for females aged 12–13 years in 2007, with a three-year catch-up to age 26; and for boys aged 12–13 from 2013, with a two-year catch-up to age 15. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of penile HPV between teenage heterosexual males in cohorts eligible or non-eligible for the school-based male vaccination program. Between 2014 and 2017, sexually active heterosexual males aged 17–19 were recruited from sexual health centres and community sources across Australia. Males provided a self-collected penile swab for 37 HPV genotypes using Roche Linear Array and completed a questionnaire. We calculated adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) of HPV between males in two periods: 2014–2015 (preceding implementation of school-based male vaccination) and 2016–2017 (eligible for school-based male vaccination). Self-reported vaccine doses were confirmed with doses reported to the National HPV Vaccination Program Register. Overall, 152 males were recruited in 2014–2015 and 146 in 2016–2017. Numbers of female sex partners and condom use did not differ between the two periods. The prevalence of quadrivalent vaccine-preventable [4vHPV] genotypes (6/11/16/18) was low in both periods (2.6% [2014–15] versus 0.7% [2016–17]; p = 0.371; aPR 0.28 [95% CI: 0.03–2.62]). Compared with men in 2014–2015, men in 2016–2017 had a lower prevalence of any of the 37 HPV genotypes tested (21.7% versus 11.6%; aPR 0.62 [95% CI: 0.36–1.07]) and any of the 13 high-risk genotypes tested (15.8% versus 7.5%; aPR 0.59 [95% CI: 0.30–1.19]). Prevalence of low-risk HPV genotypes did not differ between the two periods. Of the males recruited in 2016–2017, 55% had received ≥1 vaccine dose. The prevalence of 4vHPV genotypes among teenage heterosexual males in both cohorts was low, presumably due to herd protection from the female-only vaccination program. Background Men generally have higher rates of suicide, despite fewer overt indicators of risk. Differences in presentation and response suggest a need to better understand why suicide prevention is less effective for men. Objective To explore the views of at-risk men, friends and family about the tensions inherent in suicide prevention and to consider how prevention may be improved. Design Secondary analysis of qualitative interview and focus group data, using thematic analysis techniques, alongside bracketing, construction and contextualisation. Setting and participants A total of 35 men who had recently made a suicide attempt participated in interviews, and 47 family and friends of men who had made a suicide attempt took part in focus groups. Participants recounted their experiences with men's suicide attempts and associated interventions, and suggested ways in which suicide prevention may be improved. Results Five tensions in perspectives emerged between men and their support networks, which complicated effective management of suicide risk: (i) respecting privacy vs monitoring risk, (ii) differentiating normal vs risky behaviour changes, (iii) familiarity vs anonymity in personal information disclosure, (iv) maintaining autonomy vs imposing constraints to limit risk, and (v) perceived need for vs failures of external support services. Conclusion Tension between the different perspectives increased systemic stress, compounding problems and risk, thereby decreasing the effectiveness of detection of and interventions for men at risk of suicide. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a traditional practice where female genital organs are altered for non-medical reasons. The custom is outlawed in Australia and associated with an array of medical consequences. Due to the recent influx of migrants from regions endemic to FGM, the practice is becoming a growing concern locally. This federal government funded study aimed to elicit the poorly understood perceptions that young, Sub-Saharan African, migrant males residing in Townsville, Australia have on FGM. Through piloted questionnaires we found that amongst the 67 participants, 23.9% believed that FGM should be allowed under Australian Law. The independent predictors of supportive attitudes in favour of FGM were having resided in Australia for five or less years (p = .016, 95% CI 0.99-8.09) and coming from a basic educational background (high school or TAFE) (p = .003, 95% CI 1.3-12.4). This study also found that participant perceptions on FGM were amenable to change through educational interventional strategies. No research has ever been conducted in Australia looking at the perception that young, migrant males have on FGM. Several European-based studies have examined the perceptions of older, poorly educated, migrant male cohorts. Generally, these studies show that the attitudinal support for FGM and intention to practice remains relatively high amongst these cohorts. This study examined the attitudes of a young, Sub-Saharan African, migrant, male cohort residing in Australia. This adds to the literature base by establishing the perceptions and associated socio-demographic variables of this unique and influential subset of the migrant population. This directly facilitates the development of interventional strategies against FGM by highlighting those most likely to have an attitudinal support in favour of FGM. Background: Young men are consistently less likely to seek help for mental health problems than their female peers. This is particularly concerning given the high rates of suicide among male adolescents. The school system has been identified as an ideal setting for the implementation of prevention and early intervention programs for young people. The current trial aims to determine the effectiveness of the Silence is Deadly program in increasing positive help-seeking intentions for mental health problems and suicide among male secondary school students.Methods: This study is a two-arm, cluster-randomised, controlled trial that will compare the Silence is Deadly program to a wait-list control condition. Eight Australian high schools will be recruited to the trial, with male students in grades 11 and 12 (16 to 18 years of age) targeted for participation. The program is an innovative male-tailored suicide prevention intervention, comprising a presentation that emphasises role-modelling and legitimises help-seeking for personal and emotional problems, and a brief video that features celebrity athletes who counter existing male norms around help-seeking and encourage communication about personal and emotional issues. The program also includes a discussion of how to help a friend in distress and ends with a question and answer session. The primary outcome measure for the current study is help-seeking intentions. Secondary outcomes include help-seeking behaviour, help-seeking attitudes, help-seeking stigma, mental health symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Data will be collected pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at 3-month follow-up. Primary analyses will compare changes in help-seeking intentions for the intervention condition relative to the wait-list control condition using mixed-effects repeated-measures analyses that account for clustering within schools.Discussion: If proven to be effective, this targeted help-seeking intervention for adolescent males, which is currently only delivered in one jurisdiction, could be more widely delivered in Australian high schools. Aim: To identify lifestyle factors associated with healthy aging in middle-aged and older Australian men. Methods: A cross-sectional, population-based, computer-assisted telephone interview study explored self-reported health outcomes, and associated determinants for general and reproductive health (the Men in Australia Telephone Survey) in men aged 40 years and older ( n = 5990). 'Good health' was defined by self-reported health (excellent/very good) combined with absence of self-reported high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and depression symptoms. Categories of sexual activity frequency in the previous four weeks ranged from zero to 12+ times. Results: 'Good health' declined with increasing age with 17% of men over 70 years reporting 'good health'. In multivariable logistic regression models, significant inverse associations were found between modifiable lifestyle factors - both underweight and overweight/obesity, physical inactivity, smoking and high alcohol consumption - and 'good health'. Low-risk alcohol intake and living with a partner were positively associated with 'good health'. Sexual activity was also positively associated with 'good health' ( p < 0.001) with elevated odds ratios (ORs) for each category of frequency of sexual activity (1-4, 5-8, 9-12 or 12+ times in the past 4 weeks) relative to zero frequency (ORs 1.68 to 2.16). Conclusion: This study suggests that sexual activity is an important correlate of retaining good health in middle- and older-aged men, independent of other behavioral determinants. Objectives: To describe rates of hospitalization for head and traumatic brain injury (TBI) among Australian adults aged 15-24 years. Design: Descriptive analysis of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare National Hospital Morbidity Database, using data from 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2006. Results: The rate of hospitalization for head injury was 618.5 per 100 000, with 148.1 per 100 000 being high threat to life injuries. In multivariate analysis, males had 3.2-times the rate of females. Youth and young adults living in remote and very remote areas had a 2.6-3.2-fold greater rate of head injury than city-dwellers and a 2.3-2.7-fold greater rate of injuries that were high threat to life. The rate of TBI was 169.3 per 100 000, with 87.1 per 100 000 being high threat to life injuries. In multivariate analysis, males had 3.2-times the rate of females. Youth and young adults living in very remote and remote areas had a 2.5-3.0-fold greater rate of TBI than city-dwellers and a 2.1-2.3-fold greater rate of high threat to life TBI. Conclusions: Males and youth and young adults living remotely were disproportionately represented among those sustaining head injuries. Context This paper examines the criterion validity of the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT), which has been used since 1996 in Australia and more recently in the UK and Ireland. The study provides evidence on the extent to which GAMSAT, in combination with grade point average (GPA) and interview scores, adds value to determining an individual’s capability for medical study. The study responds to increasing demand for information on the validity of selection processes. Criterion validity is important because it helps to empirically situate selection tests within their broader contexts by, for instance, providing an assurance to educators and the public that test results are valid and add value to selection decisions. Methods After introducing the rationale and focus of the study, the paper summarises the data and research methods, presents statistical results and draws conclusions that advance current insight into medical school admissions processes. The results are based on data from six institutions and 351 students. Results Analyses of GAMSAT, interview and GPA scores show, in summary, that: there are fairly high levels of divergence between these three measures; that relationships between the measures and Year 1 marks vary across institutions, and that a combination of GAMSAT and GPA scores provides the best means of predicting Year 1 performance. Abstract: Many territorial species have the ability to recognise neighbours from stranger individuals. If the neighbouring individual is assumed to pose less of a threat, the territorial individual responds less and avoids unnecessary confrontations with familiar individuals at established boundaries, thus avoiding the costly energy expenditure associated with fighting. Territorial male Australian fur seals respond more to strangers than to neighbouring males. The present study evaluated which acoustic features were important in the neighbour–stranger recognition process in male Australian fur seals. The results reveal that there was an increase in response strength or intensity from males when they heard more bark units, indicating the importance of repetition to detect a caller. However, lengthening and shortening the inter-unit spaces, (i.e. changing the rhythm of the call) did not appear to significantly affect an animal''s response. In addition, the whole frequency spectrum was considered important to recognition with results suggesting that they may vary in their importance. A call containing the dominant and surrounding harmonics was considered important to a male''s ability to recognise its neighbour. Furthermore, recognition occurs even with a partial bark, but males need to hear between 25 and 75% of each bark unit from neighbouring seals. Our study highlights which acoustic features induce stronger or weaker responses from territorial males, decoding the important features in neighbour–stranger recognition. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose Dysfunctional personality characteristics have a negative impact on the learning process, academic motivation, academic grades and course attendance. They are associated with higher levels of anxiety and negative mood before examinations, a lack of self-confidence and fear of failure, social skills deficits, and personal and social relationship problems. Dysfunctional personality characteristics inhibit interpersonal working relationships and are detrimental to team effectiveness. Previous research revealed that the majority of students selected into an Australian undergraduate medical programme via the process of academic merit, application and interview reported elevated levels of dysfunctional personality characteristics. Our research now identifies those patterns of dysfunctional behaviour that impacted on academic grades over the first 3 years of the medical programme. Methods Dysfunctional personality characteristics in a sample of Australian undergraduate medical students were assessed with the Hogan Development Survey (HDS). The scores of 139 students were then correlated with their end-of-year examination marks for each of the first 3 years of medical training, and their average grade. Results Pearson's bivariate correlation analysis revealed that there were a number of significant negative relationships between academic grades and the HDS syndromes of Away and Against. There were significant positive relationships between academic grades and the HDS syndrome of Diligent. Conclusions To enrol and teach students who fail to graduate, need to repeat, choose not to pursue a career in medicine upon graduation, or become inefficient practitioners is costly. Objective To investigate workforce participation patterns among Australian medical graduates and the extent of cohort differences in these patterns. Design We carried out a retrospective longitudinal cohort study, with data collected by postal survey on current occupation, location, absences from the workforce and occupation since graduation. Participants Graduates who had completed their basic medical training at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, in 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995 were invited to participate ( n = 546); 368 took part in the study (69%). Outcome measures The proportion of graduates in the Australian medical workforce, the equivalent full-time contribution to the Australian medical workforce, and the proportion taking temporary absences from the workforce were determined. Results The rate of participation in the Australian medical workforce was 96% 2 years after graduation. It then declined to reach 85% by 10 years and regained slightly to reach 88% by 15 years after graduation. There was no indication that the 1995 cohort made a lower contribution to the Australian medical workforce than the earlier cohorts in their first 7 years after graduation. Conclusion Although there are few indications of differences between these cohorts during the first 7 years after graduation, the main contributing factors to losses from the Australian medical workforce – medical work overseas and parental leave – do not exert their maximum influence until a later timepoint. Objectives To describe time trends and other predictors of recent HIV testing among homosexual men enrolled in behavioural surveillance studies in Australia. Methods Repeated cross-sectional studies during the period 1996–2001 in Australian capital cities. Men were recruited from a variety of community-based settings, including gay community outdoor events, sex on premises venues, and social venues. They underwent a brief self-administered questionnaire in which they reported their HIV status, HIV-testing history, sexual behaviour and demographic information. Results Questionnaires were returned for 22 161 HIV-negative or status-unknown participants. While 85.3% had ever tested for HIV, 57.6% had tested in the last 12 months. Recent testing was greater in those living in Sydney, in younger men, in gay-identified men, in gay community-attached men, in those who reported unprotected anal intercourse and a higher number of sexual partners, and in partners of HIV-positive men. Although recent testing declined from 1996 to 2001, this trend was no longer significant when adjusted for other testing predictors. Conclusions In Australia, HIV testing among gay men decreased slightly from 1996 to 2001, but the trend was not significant when adjusted for other predictors. Testing levels were highest among those at highest risk of HIV infection, and lowest among non gay-identified and non gay-community attached homosexual men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was a qualitative descriptive interpretive investigation into a group of women’s attitudes to the use of condoms in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Twenty women were interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule. The participants’ perception of who should be responsible for providing and ensuring use of condoms varied, as did their attitudes to condom use. Negative attitudes centred around the need to be prepared for sex, the nuisance value and the need to be careful of slip-ups, while positive attitudes centred around the lack of mess. Most women in a committed relationship did not use condoms other than for contraception because they trusted their partners to be faithful. Raising the issue outside of birth control suggested unfaithfulness. These women were on the whole more confident of their ability to negotiate condom use than had been found in previous studies. It was concluded that the safe sex message is not getting through to many women, that health promotion should continue to stress the message about safe sex and that advertising should stress the positive aspects of condom use.
