Concentrations of dissolved metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Mn and Zn) were determined for summer and winter, under low-flow conditions in Port Jackson, a microtidal, well-mixed estuary in south-east Australia. Mean concentrations of Cd (0.04 ± 0.02 μg/l), Ni (0.86 ± 0.40 μg/l), Mn (20.0 ± 25 μg/l) and Zn (6.47 ± 2.0 μg/l) were below water quality guidelines. Concentrations of Cu (1.68 ± 0.37 μg/l), however, slightly exceeded recommended values. Dissolved Ni and Mn behaved mostly conservatively, whereas Cd, Cu and Zn showed mid-estuarine maxima. Peaks in Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations were located in the upper estuary, independent of the salinity and suspended particulate matter loading, and were consistent with anthropogenic inputs of metals in the estuary. Concentrations of dissolved Cu were highest in summer, whereas concentrations of Cd, Ni and Mn were significantly lower in summer than winter (P⩽0.05). The increase in temperature and biological activity during summer explained the seasonal variation. The sequence of log Kd values (20–30 salinity) was Mn>Zn>Cu>Ni. These results give unique information concerning the contemporaneous distribution of dissolved trace metals in the Port Jackson estuary and they provide a data set against which the long-term contamination may be assessed. Particulate trace metal (Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn) and major element (Fe, Mn and Al) concentrations have been determined following intensive sampling over two consecutive spring tidal cycles in the 'turbidity maximum zone' (TMZ) of the Port Jackson estuary, Australia. Salinity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and chlorophyll a were also determined. A three-factor analysis of variance was used to test temporal variability in concentrations of particulate trace metals and major elements as a result of tidal oscillation. Estuarine master variables, such as temperature and pH, varied within a narrow range; nevertheless, the tidal signal was clear for surface and bottom waters. In surface water, no variance was detected in SPM concentrations between consecutive tidal cycles or between tidal stages (i.e. flood, ebb and slack water). In bottom water, however, SPM concentrations were significantly higher (P≤0.05) at flood tide than at slack high water and ebb tide. Concentrations of particulate trace metals and major elements in surface water do not display significant variability between tidal cycles or stages. Nevertheless, differences within each tidal stage were significant (P≤0.05) for all elements. In bottom water, only particulate Fe and Al exhibited significant differences (P≤0.05) between tidal cycles, whereas particulate Ni was the only trace element that presented significant differences (P≤0.05) between tidal stages, following the distribution of SPM, with highest concentrations at flood tide. Among the metals studied, significant variation was found at all three temporal scales examined (i.e. from hours to consecutive tidal cycles), although the patterns of variation were different for each metal. The semi-diurnal fluctuation of SPM and particulate trace metal concentrations during spring tides is interpreted as a resuspension–deposition cycle caused by cyclical oscillations of bottom currents. The results are discussed in the context of the implications of tidal cycle influence on the geochemistry and cycling of particulate trace metals in the Port Jackson estuary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many hypotheses have been raised about the controls of the distribution and fractionation of the rare earth elements (REE) in coastal ecosystems. Here, REE were measured in estuarine sediments and in six mangrove soil profiles along the estuarine salinity gradient of the Jaguaripe estuary, northeastern Brazil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the fractionation, distribution, remobilization, and possible sources of these elements. The ΣREE and Y in oxic estuarine sediments ranged from 202 to 220 mg kg -1 and from 12 to 15 mg kg -1 , respectively. The normalized abundances to the Post Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) showed that light REE (LREE; La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) were consistently enriched over heavy REE (HREE; Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu). Among the REE, only LREE showed significant correlation with Al (r = 0.85) and Fe (r = 0.96) indicating that Al and Fe oxy-hydroxides are the main host phases of the LREE in estuarine sediments. The average ΣREE for mangrove soils throughout the salinity gradient ranged from 161 ± 18 mg kg -1 (lower estuary) to 183 ± 16 mg kg -1 (upper estuary). Al-normalized Mn and Fe concentrations showed small peaks down-core, indicating diagenetic remobilization. Vertical REE profiles have shown that post-deposition processes might contribute to the patterns in the abundances of the ΣREE and their fractionation at the surface and subsurface mangrove soils. Below the top 15 cm, diagenetic alteration after burial is not leading to substantial variation in the LREE/HREE profiles. The coincidence of peaks in individual REE/Al down core along with Fe and Mn peaks reflects the participation of the REE in early diagenesis. The advantages of using radionuclides for laboratory studies of environmental processes include the wide range of element concentrations that can be studied, the capability to simultaneously study several isotopes in a single experiment, the direct applicability to the behaviour of radioactive waste or fallout, and the ability to study the mechanisms, reversibility and kinetics of environmental reactions under controlled conditions. These attributes are demonstrated using specific examples drawn from case studies in Australia, including radionuclide fallout onto tropical soils, the association of trace metals with harbour sediments and the behaviour of uranium in natural and contaminated systems.
