Abstract: A recent mass murder incident in a Bondi shopping center has shocked Australians. The attacker, Joel Cauchi, killed six people and injured 12 others before being killed at the scene. While mass murder events are rare in Australia, there have been previous incidents, such as the Bourke Street incident in Melbourne in 2017 and the Port Arthur massacre in 1996. The use of knives in homicides is significant in Australia, with knives being the primary weapon in 35% of all homicide incidents. Knife crime has become a growing concern, leading to increased efforts to combat it. The Bondi attack is classified as an active armed offender incident, and the response to such events has been a focus for law enforcement. The tragic events will be subject to a coronial inquest, and the bravery of civilians and first responders will be acknowledged. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract: Gunshot deaths in children less than 17 years of age from Adelaide, SA, Australia (1969–2005) and from San Diego County, CA, United States (1988–2005) were compared. Forty-two pediatric gunshot fatalities occurred in South Australia (1.1 cases/year; M:F = 30:12). There were 6 accidents (14%), 14 suicides (33%), and 22 homicides (52%). In San Diego there were 185 cases ( c.10 cases/year; M:F = 148:37). There were 6 accidents (3%), 42 suicides (23%), 130 homicides (70%), and 7 undetermined cases (4%). The incidence of homicide was significantly higher in San Diego County compared to Adelaide ( p < 0.001), with a higher proportion of murder–suicides occurring in Adelaide. There were markedly more accidents and suicides involving males in Adelaide and a far higher number of male homicide victims in San Diego County compared to females. Rifles of 0.22-caliber were preferred weapons in South Australia, compared to handguns in San Diego County. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: AbstractÂ Â This study reviews firearm-related deaths (homicidal, suicidal and accidental) from 1994 to 2003 in the Western Sidney area, Australia, serviced by the Westmead Department of Forensic Medicine, in order to document the features of the cases and to assess the effect of the introduction of the NSW Firearms Act in 1996. There were 211 fatalities involving firearms (1.8% of all of the Coronerâs cases for the period); firearm deaths were classified as homicide (75), suicide (134) or accidental (2). There was a clear peak of homicide deaths by firearm in the 20â29 age group, whereas the suicide peak was broad, spanning the ages 20â69Â years. More suicides occurred at home than homicides and a higher proportion of suicides were by rifle than homicides, which favoured hand guns. Entry wounds in suicides mostly involved the head, with the chest being the commonest entry site in homicides. The only statistically significant trend was for an increase in the number of firearm-related suicides in males, comparing the number of deaths pre- and post-firearm law introduction.
