A new species, Ficotarsonemus bancroftisp. nov., is described from female and male mites from within the syconium of the sandpaper fig Ficus coronata Spin collected from southeast Queensland, Australia. Introduction: Farm workers are at high risk for injuries, and epidemiological data are needed to plan resource allocation. Objective: This study identified regions with high farm‐related injury rates in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia, for residents aged ≥50 yr. Design: Retrospective synthesis using electronic medical records of emergency presentations occurring during 2017–2019 inclusive for Local Government Areas (LGA) in the study region. For each LGA, age‐standardised incidence rates (per 1000 population/year) were calculated. Findings: For men and women combined, there were 31 218 emergency presentations for any injury, and 1150 (3.68%) of these were farm‐related. The overall age‐standardised rate for farm‐related injury presentations was 2.6 (95% CI 2.4–2.7); men had a higher rate than women (4.1, 95% CI 3.9–4.4 versus 1.2, 95% CI 1.0–1.3, respectively). For individual LGAs, the highest rates of farm‐related emergency presentations occurred in Moyne and Southern Grampians, both rural LGAs. Approximately two‐thirds of farm‐related injuries occurred during work activities (65.0%), and most individuals arrived at the hospital by transport classified as "other" (including private car, 83.3%). There were also several common injury causes identified: "other animal related injury" (20.2%), "cutting, piercing object" (19.5%), "fall ⟨1 m" (13.1%), and "struck by or collision with object" (12.5%). Few injuries were caused by machinery (1.7%) and these occurred mainly in the LGA of Moyne (65%). Introduction: There have been few controlled evaluations of Social Prescribing (SP), in which link workers support lonely individuals to engage with communitybased social activities. This study reports early outcomes of a trial comparing General Practitioner treatment-as-usual (TAU) with TAU combined with Social Prescribing (SP) in adults experiencing loneliness in Queensland. Methods: Participants were 114 individuals who were non-randomly assigned to one of two conditions (SP, n = 63; TAU, n = 51) and assessed at baseline and 8 weeks, on primary outcomes (loneliness, well-being, health service use in past 2 months) and secondary outcomes (social anxiety, psychological distress, social trust). Results: Retention was high (79.4%) in the SP condition. Time × condition interaction effects were found for loneliness and social trust, with improvement observed only in SP participants over the 8-week period. SP participants reported significant improvement on all other outcomes with small-to-moderate effect sizes (ULS-8 loneliness, wellbeing, psychological distress, social anxiety). However, interaction effects did not reach significance. Discussion: Social prescribing effects were small to moderate at the 8-week follow up. Group-based activities are available in communities across Australia, however, further research using well-matched control samples and longer-term follow ups are required to provide robust evidence to support a wider roll out. Background: Schools play a key role in supporting the well-being and resettlement of refugee children, and parental engagement with the school may be a critical factor in the process. Many resettlement countries have policies in place to support refugee parents' engagement with their children's school. However, the impact of these programs lacks systematic evaluation. This study first aimed to validate self-report measures of parental school engagement developed specifically for the refugee context, and second, to identify parent characteristics associated with school engagement, so as to help tailor support to families most in need.Methods and Findings: The report utilises 2016 baseline data of a cohort study of 233 Arabic-speaking parents (77% response rate) of 10- to 12-year-old schoolchildren from refugee backgrounds across 5 schools in Sydney, Australia. Most participants were born in Iraq (81%) or Syria (11%), and only 25% spoke English well to very well. Participants' mean age was 40 years old, and 83% were female. Confirmatory factor analyses were run on provisional item sets identified from a literature review and separate qualitative study. The findings informed the development of 4 self-report tools assessing parent engagement with the school and school community, school belonging, and quality of the relationship with the schools' bilingual cultural broker. Cronbach alpha and Pearson correlations with an established Teacher-Home Communication subscale demonstrated adequate reliability (α = 0.67 to 0.80) and construct and convergent validity of the measures (p < 0.01), respectively. Parent characteristics were entered into respective least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analyses. The degree of parents' psychological distress (as measured by the Kessler10 self-report instrument) and postmigration living difficulties (PLMDs) were each associated with lower school engagement and belonging, whereas less time lived in Australia, lower education levels, and an unemployed status were associated with higher ratings in relationship quality with the schools' cultural broker. Study limitations include the cross-sectional design and the modest amount of variance (8% to 22%) accounted for by the regression models.Conclusions: The study offers preliminary refugee-specific measures of parental school engagement. It is expected they will provide a resource for evaluating efforts to support the integration of refugee families into schools. The findings support the need for initiatives that identify and support parents with school-attending children from refugee backgrounds who are experiencing psychological distress or resettlement stressors. The cross-axial pattern of the Finke (Larapinta) River across the central ranges of Australia developed through a complex combination of processes including early planation; deep weathering (late Mesozoic/early Cainozoic); long-term stream impression; etchplanation; progressive aridity, leading to late (Pliocene and Quaternary) changes in fluvial flood regimen; all associated with regressive river erosion, stream capture, and/or epeirogenic movements. An early phase of etchplanation explains the development on easily weathered rocks of intramontane basins and strike valleys. Combined with stream impression, this process led to the superposing of the Finke and the Hugh Rivers across resistant rock units. The most unusual aspect of the Finke is a palimpsest, developed in the Krichauff Ranges, in which an ancient, relict gorge, is incised into a local planation surface (the Shoulder Surface), and preserved as paleomeander segments, in which the original quartzite gravel fill has been cemented with iron oxides and silica. The Shoulder Surface was subsequently more deeply incised by a later manifestation of the river to produce the meandering contemporary gorge that is intertwined with the relict one. The incision of the contemporary gorge occurred in association with the change in flood regimen, and involved either (1) prior aggradation of the incised paleomeandering stream to permit alluvial meandering across the Shoulder Surface and subsequent incision into it, or (2) headward recession of a knick point created where the Finke flowed from resistant sandstones into what are now the strike valleys of the James Ranges, from which weathered mantles had been removed by etchplanation processes. Objectives: This study investigated the differences in parental beliefs about anxiety and parenting styles in Indian- and Australian-born mothers in Australia and whether these differentially related to child anxiety depending on maternal background and acculturation. Methods: 51 mother-child dyads from Sydney participated, consisting of Indian- or Australian-born mothers and their 8–12-year-old child. Mothers completed measures of their anxiety, their child's anxiety, their beliefs about their child's anxiety and their bi-dimensional acculturation (if Indian), i.e., an assessment of immersion into both Australian and native culture. Children completed a self-report of anxiety and a measure of their mother's parenting style. Results: Indian mothers scored significantly higher on anxious rearing and negative beliefs about anxiety than Australian-born mothers. Moderated regression analysis revealed that Country of Birth did not significantly moderate the relationship between parenting and child anxiety, but acculturation did. Amongst mothers reporting low Indian cultural retention, negative beliefs about child anxiety and anxious rearing positively related to child anxiety. These relationships were reversed amongst mothers reporting high Indian cultural retention. Amongst mothers reporting high Australian cultural identification, emotional warmth negatively related to child anxiety; this was reversed for low Australian cultural identification. Conclusions: Results highlight the importance of considering acculturation, specifically as a bi-dimensional construct, rather than COB when examining anxious behaviours and attitudes in migrants. Research focused on two factors that may be influencing females in choice of careers. Factors are role-specific self-concept in science and self-perception in terms of stereotypical masculine and feminine characteristics. Logical ability and mathematics and science courses were also examined as factors in career choice. Results of data for 177 females and 179 males in Australia are reported. (RH)

Streamed and recorded lectures as well as audience response technology are increasingly used in public health tertiary education, to train practitioners to address Asia-Pacific region's rapidly changing health needs. However, little is known about the impact on student performance, satisfaction, and understanding. This study aimed to assess postgraduate students' perceptions and their use of technology in a large epidemiology subject at an Australian university in internal and external modes. The study used both routinely collected student data (n = 453) and survey data (n = 88). Results indicate that students accept and use technology-based learning tools, and perceive audience response technology as well as streamed and recorded lectures as useful for their learning (96.6%). Students have shown a preference to review recorded lectures rather than viewing streamed lectures. Analyses further suggest that the use of recorded and streamed lectures may be linked to better student performance for external students (passing, any use odds ratio = 3.32). However, these effects are not consistent across all student subgroups and externally enrolled students may profit more than those enrolled internally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Children may have a foundational role in efforts to raise community awareness about dementia. There is some qualitative work with children with a relative with dementia, but little work into the insights of children as general citizens without affected family. One issue is an absence of measurement tools; thus the study aimed to design and pilot a psychometrically sound self-report measure of dementia attitudes for children. Method: Using a multi-staged scale development process, stakeholder and expert input informed a 52-item Kids Insight into Dementia Survey (KIDS). After a pretest of KIDS with 21 Australian schoolchildren aged 10-12 years, exploratory factor analysis and reliability and validity testing were run on a revised KIDS with data from 203 similar-aged schoolchildren. Results: The KIDS was reduced from 52 to 14 items, and a three-factor solution identified: ‘Personhood,’ ‘Stigma,’ and ‘Dementia Understanding.’ A strong positive correlation with an adult measure of dementia attitudes (r =.76) and a moderate positive correlation with a child measure of attitudes towards older adults (r =.47) indicated good concurrent validity. Internal consistency of.83 indicated good reliability. Conclusion: Results support the use of KIDS as a tool to measure children's insight into dementia, and to evaluate dementia education initiatives targeting the youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface roughness is an important rock property that is measured for structural geology and engineering purposes. We have developed an automatic technique to detect anisotropic features on rock faces based on fractal analysis. The analysis method has been applied to synthetic surfaces, and to digitally mapped point clouds of natural rock surfaces shaped by weathering, fault wear, and mining. We illustrate the technique using field examples from Permian sandstones containing brittle shear zones in northeast England, the surface of a neotectonic fault in Turkey, Proterozoic quartzite from central Australia, and Devonian Quartzite in an aggregate quarry in Germany. Roughness analysis of these natural examples suggests that a significant change of roughness value, anisotropy, and anisotropy direction can exist across scale. Our analysis method represents a step toward developing a toolkit to automatically detect and interpret surface charac teristics from digitally acquired data sets. ABSTRACT. The authors undertook this study to assess levels of cadmium exposure in the general population. Samples of lung, liver, and kidney were obtained from 61 cadavers (43 males, 18 females; 2–89 yr of age, mean age = 38.5 yr) who died from accidental causes and who were subject to postmortem examinations at the John Tonge Centre for Forensic Sciences, Queensland Health Scientific Services, Brisbane, Australia, in 1997 and 1998. Samples of bladder urine were also obtained from 22 cadavers. Tissue and urine samples were analyzed for cadmium, zinc, and copper with inductively coupled plasm (ICP) mass spectrometry. The overall mean values for cadmium in the lung, liver, and kidney cortex samples were 0.13, 0.95, and 15.45 μg/gm wet tissue weight. The average renal cadmium level in subjects with high lung-cadmium levels (n = 13) was 6 μg/gm wet tissue weight higher than that of similarly aged subjects who had medium lung-cadmium levels (n = 30). In females, the average level of cadmium in the liver was 74% greater than in males, and the average liver cadmium in females with high lung-cadmium levels was 100% higher than in males in the same age range who had the same high lung-cadmium levels. Renal cadmium accumulation tended to be greater in females than in males who were in the same age range and who had similar lung-cadmium levels, a result that suggested that there was a higher absorption rate of cadmium in females. The mean value for a urinary cadmium excretion of 2.30 μg/gm creatinine was found in a subset of samples that had a mean age of 39 yr and a renal cortex cadmium concentration of 18.6 μg/gm wet tissue weight. Urinary cadmium excretion rates were correlated more strongly with lung and kidney cadmium content than with age or liver cadmium levels. The results suggest that urinary cadmium excretion may be increased in smokers and could provide some estimate of body cadmium burdens in future Australian epidemiological studies. The article focuses on the comparative perspective on leadership in the Australian Public Services (APS) in Australia. It is mentioned that low levels of leadership observed in the APS are contrasted with much points which characterize the better area of the private sector. It is stated that change in the APS over a couple of years has been driven by several interrelated factors including economic pressures in the world economy, the need to restrain government spending and a commitment to greater efficiency in the administration. Moreover, it notes that framing of the organizational vision, mission and goals in the APS typically takes place within the context of a department or agency's corporate plan.

The article presents a study that examined the influences of sex-role identity and role-specific self-concept on career preferences, particularly in the area of science, of high school students in Australia. Students from two schools were selected based on the presence of Equal Opportunity Officer in the school, agreement to participate, and location. An open ended questionnaire, the Bem sex-role Inventory, the Peterson Yaakobi Q-Sort, and the Test of Logical Thinking were used in the study. Results showed that female students preferring science related careers and nontraditional careers had a positive role-specific self-concept and a masculine perception of themselves. Also, male students had more positive role-specific self-concept than female students.
