Abstract

The article focuses on the possible use of phyto-extraction or the natural ability of plants to absorb organic and inorganic chemicals and metals from soil, sediment and water. A study in the Aquaponics Vegetable Production Greenhouse in Auburn, Alabama on the capacity of lotus plants to filter water pollutants is presented. Preliminary data suggest that the lotus has potential to hyper-accumulate elements, including aluminum, manganese and iron, and in addition has the potential of absorbing high levels of contaminants in roots and leaves.
