The age and growth of three endemic threatened guitarfish species were analysed using vertebrae of Pseudobatos horkelii, P. percellens and Zapteryx brevirostris. Edge and marginal-increment analyses were used to evaluate the periodicity of the formation of the band-pairs, suggesting deposition of one band-pair per year, from late winter to late spring. The von Bertalanffy growth model was used to describe the growth of these species with the following parameters, for pooled sexes: P. horkelii L ∞ = 126.93, k = 0.19 and t 0 = -1.51; P. percellens L ∞ = 109.31, k = 0.16 and t 0 = -1.78; Z. brevirostris L ∞ = 60.37, k = 0.24 and t 0 = -1.42. Our results are essential to understanding the resilience and vulnerability of these species to harvest, which can contribute to management and conservation actions of these species., (© 2019 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

Morphometric measurements, meristic counts and DNA barcoding identified the presence of a biglip grunt Plectorhinchus macrolepis in the western Atlantic Ocean. As the species is endemic to the tropical eastern Atlantic Ocean and has not previously been reported in the western Atlantic Ocean, we discuss the possible means by which it might have dispersed to the western Atlantic Ocean. Despite its worldwide distribution and vulnerable status, knowledge on the biology and ecology of the smooth hammerhead Sphyrna zygaena in the temperate NE Atlantic is very scarce. Here, we reveal intra-annual fluctuations in S. zygaena abundance in the Portuguese southwestern coast, using sightings data collected on board whale watching boats over five years (2010-14; excluding winter months). Moreover, we investigated how shark abundance is related to local environmental conditions. We describe the first smooth hammerhead “hotspot” in the NE Atlantic, and we show a recurrent pattern of occurrence during the warmer summer and autumn months (from July to October) near Sagres and Martinhal Bay and islands. Intra-annual variations in abundance were significantly associated with sea surface temperature and negatively related with upwelling index and chlorophyll a, suggesting horizontal movements linked to the seasonal changes. Hence, hammerheads moved inshore during the warmer periods (with low primary productivity), due to either direct influence of temperature in their movements or indirect influence in prey distribution. This hammerhead “hotspot” may constitute a nursery ground for S. zygaena, nevertheless, our data does not allow us to prove or refute such claim. Future telemetry-based studies should be conducted to fully understand hammerhead movements and habitat preferences, and to evaluate this “hotspot” as a critical habitat for this predator. The aim of this paper was to explore egg-laying areas of oviparous chondrichthyans occurring in the northern part of the Southwest Atlantic Ocean (36°S–41°S) at between 50 and 200 metres depth and the Mar del Plata Canyon (from 200 to 3447 m). A total of 515 capsules were collected corresponding to 10 species. Four species accounted for 87.6% of the total catch:Psammobatis normani,Bathyraja macloviana,Amblyraja doellojuradoiandBathyraja brachyurops.The remaining corresponded toSchroederichthys bivius,Psammobatis rudis,Zearaja chilensis,Bathyraja albomaculata,Psammobatis lentiginosaandBathyrajasp.Most hauls were monospecific and relatively few hauls contained four or five species (southern part of the area, in sites located at 75 and 94–105 m depth). No egg capsules were recorded between 1712 m and 3447 m. Highest densities (>3000 capsules/km2) were mainly found between 39°46.2′ and 40°29.9′S from 85 to 105 m and they were also recorded near the Mar del Plata Canyon at 37°59.7′S and at 852 m. The highest value recorded was 12,326 capsules/km2(located at 40°18.9′S and 85.4 m). The highest densities for each of the most abundant species are discussed. The finding of high densities of egg cases near the Argentine shelf-break front indicates that many skate species use this area as a nursery site. The egg-laying areas explored here are the first reported sites of this kind in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Recognizing and protecting egg-laying habitats may be important steps to a long-term conservation of oviparous chondrichthyan populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Among several marine pelagic species of the Brazilian coast, Scomber colias Gmelin, 1789 (Perciformes: Scombridae) stands out for having great economic importance, since it is widely used as a food resource and presents moderate vulnerability. Twenty specimens of S. colias were purchased from October 2015 to October 2016 from the coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil. In the present study, we recorded Hysterothylacium fabri (Rudolphi, 1819) (Deardorff and Overstreet, Proc Biol Soc Wash 93(4):1035-1079 1980) from the S. colias intestine using an integrative taxonomy approach, where morphological data are used in combination with partial sequences of the ITS gene, to validate the taxonomic status of the species and establish their relationships with other members of the genus. This species is being recorded for the first time in the South Atlantic and S. colias. The specimens of H. fabri collected in this study parasitizing S. colias presented morphology similar to the other specimens already registered parasitizing other hosts. The distance matrix generated showed that the partial sequences obtained in this study were more similar to sequences of Hysterothylacium sp. collected in China. In phylogenetic analysis, the two detected haplotypes of this study were grouped with H. fabri haplotypes deposited in GenBank in a monophyletic subclade.

This study provides the first detailed information on the reproductive biology of the lesser guitarfish Zapteryx brevirostris in the south-western Atlantic Ocean between latitudes 34° and 42° S. A total of 320 males (196-647 mm total length, L) and 336 females (200-640 mm L) were analysed. No significant differences were observed in size at 50% maturity between males (499 mm L) and females (506 mm L). Three seasonal patterns were related to the testes mass, the development of spermatocysts and the presence of spermatozoa in genital ducts. Females showed a 3 year reproductive cycle, with 2 years of ovarian maturation and 1 year of gestation, including a mean annual fecundity of one to two embryos. Synchronicity of both ovulating females and males with sperm in genital ducts indicated that ovulation and hence mating occurs during winter. Birth was assumed to occur during winter, but neither ovulation nor mating is simultaneous with this reproductive event. Despite its low economic value, a decline in abundance in the region, together with a low reproductive efficiency, indicates that the Z. brevirostris population should be monitored closely.
