The purpose of this study is to test the relationship among green logistics, environmental degradation, and energy demand. The system generalized method of moment (system GMM) is used to study the data of Asian countries and four subregions in Asia. The estimation results show that logistics operation consumes nonrenewable energy such as fossil fuels, which has a negative impact on environmental sustainability and energy demand. The service quality and capability (LPITC) in the logistics performance index has a significant contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The logistics infrastructure (LPIIN) has significantly reduced the energy consumption in Asia, while the customs (LPIC) has significantly increased the energy demand. Other indicators of LPI also have a significant impact on the environment and energy in different subregions of Asia. Industrialization and urbanization both increase carbon emissions in Asia, while trade opening reduces carbon emissions. At the same time, these three variables have a positive impact on reducing energy consumption. The results show that logistics performance is significantly related to environmental degradation and energy, and renewable energy and green supply chain management can reduce the harmful effects of logistics activities on environment and energy. Therefore, Asian countries should give priority to environmental sustainability in supply chain management and encourage the application of green practices in logistics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cordyceps militaris has been widely used as an herbal drug and tonic food in East Asia and has also been recently studied in the West because of its various pharmacological activities such as antitumoral, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. In this study, we examined the molecular mechanism underlying the anti-allergic activity of ethanol extract prepared from silkworm pupa-cultivated Cordyceps militaris fruit bodies in activated mast cells. Our results showed that ethanol extract treatment significantly inhibited the release of -hexosaminidase (a degranulation marker) and mRNA levels of tumor necrosis factor- as well as interleukin-4 in RBL-2H3 cells. The cells were sensitized with 2,4-dinitrophenol specific IgE and then stimulated with human serum albumin conjugated with 2,4-dinitrophenol. Oral administration of 300mg/kg ethanol extract significantly ameliorated IgE-induced allergic reaction in mice with passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. Western immunoblotting results demonstrated that ethanol extract incubation significantly inhibited Syk/PI3K/MEKK4/JNK/c-jun biochemical cascade in activated RBL-2H3 cells, which activated the expression of various allergic cytokines. In addition, it suppressed Erk activation and PLC evocation, which would respectively evoke the synthesis of lipid mediators and Ca mobilization to induce degranulation in stimulated RBL-2H3 cells. A compound, identified as -sitostenone, was shown to inhibit -hexosaminidase secretion from activated mast cells. Our study demonstrated that ethanol extract contained the ingredients, which could inhibit immediate degranulation and de novo synthesis of allergic lipid mediators and cytokines in activated mast cells. In this study, the complete mitogenome sequence of Ostrinia furnacalis was described. The assembled mitogenome is 15,241 bp in length with an extreme bias of high AT content (80.9%) (GenBank accession no. MN747041). The mitochondrial genome contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 2 ribosomal RNA (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA) genes, and a control region (D-loop region). The mitochondrial gene order was identical to that observed in most lepidopteran genomes, nine PCGs were located on the H-strand, others were located on the L-strand. 12 PCGs were initiated by typical ATN codons, except for COI with CGA instead. 21 tRNAs had the typical cloverleaf structure, while the DHU arm of the trnS1 gene did not form a stable stem-loop structure. The 'ATAGT(A)'-like motif and a 19 bp poly-T stretch at the down-stream of the rrnS gene were observed in the A + T-rich region. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the relationship of O. furnacalis is very close to the three species in the subfamily Pyraustinae: O. nubilalis, O. penitalis and Loxostege sticticalis, and all the subfamilies of Spilomelinae, Pyraustinae, Crambinae and Nymphulinae within Crambidae formed monophyletic groups with the highest bootstrap value support. Background/purpose: Most reports about oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) have been contributed by occidental countries, and most of the victims of this disease are racially white. In contrast, this disorder is rarely seen in Asians and has only one African report. Consequently, OPMD has been regarded as a disease of the Western world. The purpose of this paper is to challenge the accuracy of this concept., Methods: In a Chinese immigrant family, 3 patients manifesting signs related to OPMD were examined. Electromyography, nerve conduction studies, muscle biopsy and genetic analysis were performed on the proband. All the 322 papers about OPMD were reviewed and their country of origin was labeled to perceive the approximate prevalence of OPMD. Countries were categorized into groups according to the continents to which they belonged., Results: The proband's muscle histopathology showed small angulated fiber with rimmed vacuoles, ultrastructural pathology exposed filamentous intranuclear inclusions, and genetic analysis of the polyadenylate binding protein nuclear 1(PABPN1) gene revealed 13 GCG trinucleotide repeats in one allele (GCG)13 while being normal in the other. The survey of the country of origin of OPMD reports showed that 80% of these papers were contributed by occidental countries and that the number of publications of OPMD among countries of Americas and Asia were unequal, when compared to those of European countries, which were fairly proportioned. An epidemiologic review of the literature is presented and the prevalence of OPMD is discussed., Conclusion: This is a China-born Chinese patient with both morphologically and genetically proven of OPMD. The very low OPMD report rate in developing countries of East Asia is due to the unfamiliarity of medical workers to OPMD and the unavailability of medical supplies to confirm the diagnosis.
