Since the influence of structural inheritance on rift geometiy has been widely documented, it is easy to assume that rift segmentation, a prominent feature of rift geometiy, may have been also influenced by structural heterogeneity. However, limited studies using high-quality seismic data have considered how basement reactivation is accommodated at individual fault scale and then how this results in rift segmentation at sub-basin scale. Using extensive high-quality 3D seismic data and 76 borehole data, we investigate the characteristics of rift architecture, rift-related fault systems, basement structures and rift evolution in the Hailar-Tamtsag Rift, northeast Asia. We identify three distinct rift segments which are defined by three rift-related fault systems and accompanied by three underlying basement structure systems. We recognize three phases of basement reactivation and three types (including five styles) of interactions between basement structures and rift-related faults. Our study shows that rift segmentation has been caused by reactivation of multiple basement structure systems which not only influence the orientation of rift segments and type of rift architecture, but also control the location, strike, dip and style of the major rift-related faults. Rift segmentation was completely achieved through multiple phases of basement reactivation, while the main structural framework of segmentation was established through 'extensive reactivation' during the second phase extension. Our study examines how multiple basement structure systems control rift segmentation at both individual fault and sub-basin scales, which can significantly improve our understanding of relationship between structural inheritance and rift segmentation. Paleo‐Pacific subduction generated a prolonged active continental margin along the coast of the South China Block (SCB). A Triassic magmatic gap was argued to have occurred and was ascribed to flat‐slab subduction of an oceanic plateau. We study for the first time a >330‐m‐long core of typical arc volcanics dated at ca. 218 Ma from the Meiji Atoll in the southern South China Sea (SCS). Paleomagnetism suggests 4.1°± 1.5° of post‐eruption southward drift. These observations clearly support the existence of a Triassic arc in the SCB and imply that part of the arc later split off and drifted southward during the opening of the SCS in the Oligocene. Our results better constrain the lateral extent of the proposed flat‐slab subduction along the margin of the SCB. Moreover, we provide direct evidence of how the breakaway of ribbon continents operated in active continental margins, a recurrent scenario that has been invoked for Phanerozoic tectonics and continental growth throughout Asia. Background/purpose: There are scarce reports on the prognostic factors and treatment outcomes of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) in Asia. This study aimed to address these matters in a real-world setting.Methods: Medical records of patients with histologically proven MPM diagnosed between 1977 and 2016 at the National Taiwan University Hospital were reviewed. Variables including age, gender, performance status, asbestos exposure, smoking history, histology subtype, staging, and treatment received were recorded. All patients were followed until death or March 1st, 2017. Survival and prognostic factors were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meir method and the Cox proportional hazard model.Results: A total of 93 patients was identified, including 65 men and 28 women. An increasing trend of MPM cases diagnosed was observed in the past 40 years. Stage I/II disease (HR 0.24, 95% CI 0.13-0.46) and epithelioid histology (HR 0.42, 95% CI 0.23-0.75) were associated with favorable prognosis, whereas age ≥70 years (HR 2.66, 95% CI 1.36-5.22) and ECOG ≥2 (HR 5.03, 95% CI 2.69-9.4) were poor prognostic factors. After adjustment for prognostic factors, surgery in stage I-III MPM (HR 0.36, 95% CI 0.15-0.83) and systemic therapy in stage III/IV disease (HR 0.42, 95% CI 0.19-0.94) conferred a survival benefit.Conclusion: This is one of the largest case series of MPM reported in Asia outside of Japan. Prognostic factors in the study population included age, performance status, stage, and histology subtype. Surgery in potentially resectable disease and systemic therapy in advanced MPM confer a survival benefit in Asian patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Angiosarcoma (AS) is a rare disease with a dismal prognosis. The treatment landscape and prognostic factors for advanced AS, including locally advanced, unresectable, and metastatic disease remain elusive. The Asian Sarcoma Consortium is an international collaborative effort to understand the sarcoma treatment landscape in Asia. We undertook a retrospective chart review of AS patients seen in 8 sarcoma academic centers across Asia. Patients with complete clinical, treatment, and follow-up data were enrolled. Overall, 276 advanced AS patients were included into this study; 84 (30%) of the patients had metachronous metastatic AS. The median age was 67 y; primary sites of AS was cutaneous in 55% and visceral in 45% of patients. In total, 143 (52%) patients received at least 1 line of systemic chemotherapy. The most common first-line chemotherapy regimen used was paclitaxel (47.6%) followed by liposomal doxorubicin (19.6%). The median overall survival (OS) was 7.8 mo. Significant prognostic factors for OS included age > 65 (hazard ratio (HR) 1.54, P = .006), male gender (HR 1.39, P = .02), and a cutaneous primary AS site (HR 0.63, P = .004). The median progression-free survival (PFS) for first-line chemotherapy was 3.4 mo. PFS for single vs combination or paclitaxel vs liposomal doxorubicin chemotherapy regimens were comparable. This study provides an insight into the treatment patterns and prognostic factors of advanced AS patients in Asia. Prognosis of advanced AS remains poor. Aim: To investigate the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in an Asian population., Methods: The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for observational studies published up until June 2014, without language restrictions. Additional references were obtained from reviewed articles., Results: Ten studies involving 1299 IBD patients and 1817 controls were included in the meta-analysis (24.9% of IBD patients had H. pylori infection vs 48.3% of the controls). The pooled risk ratio for H. pylori infection in IBD patients compared with controls was 0.48 (95%CI: 0.43-0.54; P < 0.001). There was no significant heterogeneity in the included studies (I (2) = 21%). Egger's linear regression indicated that there was no significant publication bias (P = 0.203)., Conclusion: The H. pylori infection rate in Asian IBD patients is significantly lower than in non-IBD patients, indicating that infection protects against the development of IBD.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been implicated in influencing the survival duration of patients with breast cancer. However, less is known about the impact of DM and other comorbidities on the breast cancer-specific survival (BCS) and overall survival (OS) outcomes of Asian patients with early-stage breast cancer., Patients and Methods: The characteristics of female patients with newly diagnosed, early-stage breast cancer were collected from the Taiwan Cancer Registry database for 2003-2004. DM status and other comorbidities were retrieved from Taiwan's National Health Insurance database. The BCS and OS times of patients according to DM status were estimated via the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox's proportional hazard model was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for the effects of DM, comorbidities, and other risk factors on mortality., Results: In total, 4,390 patients were identified and 341 (7.7%) presented with DM. The 5-year BCS and OS rates were significantly greater in DM patients than in non-DM patients (BCS, 85% versus 91%; OS, 79% versus 90%). Furthermore, after adjusting for clinicopathologic variables and comorbidities, DM remained an independent predictor of shorter BCS (adjusted HR, 1.53) and OS (adjusted HR, 1.71) times. Subgroup analyses also demonstrated a consistent prognostic influence of DM across different groups., Conclusion: In Asian patients with early-stage breast cancer, DM is an independent predictor of lower BCS and OS rates, even after adjusting for other comorbidities. The integration of DM care as part of the continuum of care for early-stage breast cancer should be emphasized.
