Prevalence of hearing loss in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is uncertain, as it is more challenging to assess hearing function in children with developmental difficulties (DD). We aimed to determine the prevalence and profiles of hearing loss in preschool children with ASD in a Southeast-Asian population who passed newborn hearing screening. A retrospective study of preschool children with DD (ASD, Global Developmental Delay (GDD), and Speech and Language Delay (SLD)) attending the Child Development Unit (CDU) at our hospital was performed. Three hundred and thirty-three children (ASD: n = 129; GDD: n = 110; and SLD: n = 94) underwent hearing assessments. Of these, 10.8% of children (n = 36, comprising 15 with ASD, 12 with GDD and 9 with SLD) had confirmed hearing loss. Hearing loss was predominantly bilateral in children with ASD and GDD; in those with SLD, unilateral and bilateral hearing loss were equally common. Conductive hearing loss occurred as frequently as sensorineural hearing loss in children with ASD and SLD, but was the dominant subtype in those with GDD. Moderate to severe hearing loss (n = 2) was noted only in children with ASD. Children with ASD and GDD required significantly more audiology visits and procedures to obtain conclusive hearing test results, compared to those with SLD. Purpose: Describe real-life practice and outcomes in the management of post)stroke upper limb spasticity with botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) in Asian settings. Methods: Subgroup analysis of a prospective, observational study (NCT01020500) of adult patients (≥18  years) with post-stroke upper limb spasticity presenting for routine spasticity management, including treatment with BoNT-A. The primary outcome was goal attainment as assessed using goal-attainment scaling (GAS). Patients baseline clinical characteristics and BoNT-A injection parameters are also described. Results: Overall, 51 patients from Asia were enrolled. Rates of comorbid cognitive and emotional problems were relatively low. Patients tended to have more severe distal limb spasticity and to prioritize active over passive function goals. Most (94.1%) patients in the subgroup were treated with abobotulinumtoxinA. For these patients, the median total dose was 500  units, and the most frequently injected muscles were the biceps brachii (83.3%), flexor carpi radialis (72.9%), and flexor digitorum profundus (66.7%). Overall, 74.5% achieved their primary goal and the mean GAS T score after one treatment cycle was 56.0  ±  13.0, with a change from baseline of 20.9  ±  14.3 (p  <  0.001). The majority (96.1%) of Asian patients were rated as having improved. Conclusion: In the Asian treatment setting, BoNT-A demonstrated a clinically significant effect on goal attainment for the real-life management of upper limb spasticity following stroke. Background: Gastric cancer is a common cancer worldwide and is responsible for over one million new cases in 2020 and an estimated 769,000 deaths, ranking fifth for incidence and fourth for mortality globally. Incidence rates are highest in Eastern Asia and Eastern Europe. Gastric cancer is highly heterogeneous and progresses rapidly. The prognosis of gastric cancer with liver metastases is poor, and clinical treatment remains challenging. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positivity is correlated to a bad prognosis for gastric cancer. Trastuzumab combined with systemic chemotherapy is the preferred treatment for HER2-positive advanced gastric cancer. However, intravenous chemotherapy has severe systemic toxicity, which reduces the local drug concentration and tumor uptake rate, and the effect is unsatisfactory. Case summary: We reported a 66-year-old patient with HER2-positive advanced gastric cancer with jaundice due to multiple liver metastases, after 6 cycles of trastuzumab combined with hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC), the tumor retracted significantly, the jaundice subsided, and the patient recovered well. The patient achieved disease control with an intensive regimen followed by less toxic maintenance therapy. Trastuzumab combined with capecitabine maintenance therapy followed up for more than 16 months. Conclusion: HAIC plus trastuzumab may be a tolerable treatment option for patients with severe liver metastases from HER2-positive gastric cancer to achieve local control and prolong survival. The existing highway construction monitoring systems are independently deployed. This paper proposes an intelligent monitoring system for highway construction based on remote wide area networks. By employing the tracking devices equipped with inertial measurement units and global positioning systems, the workers' activity space is monitored. People and equipment entering the site are registered by radio frequency identification tags with protective measures. Motion sensors are employed to monitor the changes in scaffolding, building structures, and highway low-grade inclinations. In addition, a light-weight object detection (LOD) algorithm is proposed to detect construction workers who fail to wear safety helmets. The LOD algorithm replaces the standard convolutional networks with depthwise separable convolution networks. It introduces the receptor field module, employs the LOD-NMS algorithm and Mish activation function, and sets an appropriate prior box according to the characteristics and ratios of people's heads in Asia, thus well balancing the precision and prediction efficiency. Experiments are conducted on the WIDER FACE open source data set and the real data sets. The results show LOD algorithm not only detects workers' safety helmets in real time with high precision, but also achieves higher recognition accuracy than traditional algorithms despite the low-resolution input images. Background: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) can result in high mortality upon rupture but are usually undiagnosed because of the absence of symptoms in the early stage. Ultrasound screening is regarded as an impactful way to prevent the AAA-related death but cannot be performed efficiently; therefore, a target population, especially in Asia, for this procedure is lacking. Additionally, although dyslipidaemia and atherosclerosis are associated with AAA. However, it remains undetermined whether the non-high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratio (NHHR) is associated with AAA. Therefore, this study was aimed at examining whether NHHR is associated with AAA. Method: A total of 9559 participants who underwent AAA screening at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital and through screening in two communities in Dongguan, from June 2019 to June 2021 joined in this screening program. The diagnosis of AAA was confirmed by the ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta rather than any known or suspected AAA. Clinical and laboratory data of participants were collected. The participants were separated into a normal group and an AAA group according to the abdominal aortic status. To eliminate confounding factors, a propensity score matching (PSM) approach was utilized. The independent relationship between NHHR and AAA was assessed through the utilization of multivariable logistic regression analysis. In addition, internal consistency was evaluated through subgroup analysis, which controlled for significant risk factors. Results: Of all the participants, 219 (2.29%) participants were diagnosed with AAA. A significant elevation in NHHR was identified in the AAA group when contrasted with that in the normal group (P < 0.001). As demonstrated by the results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis, AAA was independently associated with NHHR before (odds ratio [OR], 1.440, P < 0.001) and after PSM (OR, 1.515, P < 0.001). Significant extension was observed in the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) of NHHR compared to those of single lipid parameters before and after PSM. An accordant association between NHHR and AAA in different subgroups was demonstrated by subgroup analysis. Insects maintain a vast number of symbiotic bacteria, and these symbionts play key roles in the hosts' life processes. Propylea japonica (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an abundant and widespread ladybeetle in agricultural fields in Asia. Both larvae and adults of P. japonica are likely to be exposed to insecticide residue in the field during their predatory activity. Sulfoxaflor is a highly powerful insecticide that has strong efficacy in controlling sap-sucking pests. To date, there have been several studies on the acute and long-term toxicity of sulfoxaflor to insects, but few studies have reported the impact of sulfoxaflor on the predators' micro-ecosystems. This study was to determine the impact of sulfoxaflor on the symbiotic bacteria and developmental performance of P. japonica. In the present study, two concentrations (1 mg/L and 5 mg/L) and two exposure periods (1 day and 5 days) were set for P. japonica under sulfoxaflor exposure. The survival rate, developmental duration, pupation rate, emergence rate, and body weight of P. japonica were examined. Moreover, the bacterial community of P. japonica was investigated by high-throughput 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Our results indicated that bacterial community of P. japonica was mainly composed of Staphylococcus, Pantoea, Acinetobacter, Rhodococcus, and Ralstonia at the genus level. The bacterial community of P. japonica in 1 mg/L and 5 mg/L sulfoxaflor groups was significantly altered on day 1, compared with that in control group. The results also showed that the larval duration was significantly prolonged but the pupal duration was significantly shortened in both sulfoxaflor groups. Meanwhile, the pupation and emergence rate was not significantly changed, but the body weights of adults were significantly decreased in both sulfoxaflor groups. Eutrophic shallow lakes have a high content of organic matter in the sediment that may be frequently resuspended. Whilst it is generally accepted that inorganic suspended matter has a negative effect on filtering-feeding bivalves in streams, it is unclear whether resuspended sediment in lakes with a high organic content will inhibit or support bivalve growth, the latter reflecting that resuspended sediment can increase food availability for Asian clams directly but also through release of nutrients, promoting the growth of phytoplankton. We conducted two experiments assessing the impact of different concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS) on the growth and feeding behaviour of Asian clams. We found that the growth rates in the low, medium and high treatments increased 12%, 36% and 53% respectively, when compared with the control with no sediment added. The effect on clearance rates of Asian clams differed amongst suspended fractions, and the clams showed significant preference for diatoms over other algae at high TSS. We conclude that an increase in TSS stimulated rather than reduced the growth of Asian clams, suggesting that eutrophication in shallow lakes provides more favourable conditions for the population expansion of Asian clams, an invasive species in many water bodies outside Asia. Premise: Exploring how functional traits vary and covary is important to understand plant responses to environmental change. However, we have limited understanding of the ways multiple functional traits vary and covary within invasive species. Methods: We measured 12 leaf traits of an invasive plant Chromolaena odorata, associated with plant or leaf economics, herbivore defense, and drought resistance on 10 introduced populations from Asia and 12 native populations from South and Central America, selected across a broad range of climatic conditions, and grown in a common garden. Results: Species' range and climatic conditions influenced leaf traits, but trait variation across climate space differed between the introduced and native ranges. Traits that confer defense against herbivores and drought resistance were associated with economic strategy, but the patterns differed by range. Plants from introduced populations that were at the fast‐return end of the spectrum (high photosynthetic capacity) had high physical defense traits (high trichome density), whereas plants from native populations that were at the fast‐return end of the spectrum had high drought escape traits (early leaf senescence and high percentage of withered shoots). Conclusions: Our results indicate that invasive plants can rapidly adapt to novel environmental conditions. Chromolaena odorata showed multiple different functional trait covariation patterns and clines in the native and introduced ranges. Pulmonary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (pLELC) is a rare subtype of lung cancer that is associated with the Epstein-Barr virus in Asia. Due to the lack of prospective studies, the best first-line treatment and survival outcomes remain unclear. Herein, This study investigated the efficacy and safety of different treatment regimens for advanced pLELC. This retrospective study included 68 patients with advanced pLELC from two centers in China. Patients were divided into three groups according to different first-line treatments: chemotherapy (n=49, 72.1%), immunotherapy (n=7, 10.3%), and chemoimmunotherapy (n=12,17.6%). The primary endpoint of this study was the 2-year progression-free survival (PFS) of each group. The results show that the median PFS was 6.9 months (range, 2.3–not estimable) in the chemotherapy group, 11.0 months (range, 2–not estimable) in the immunotherapy group, and 11.8 months (range, 6–not estimable) in the chemoimmunotherapy group. There was a significant difference in 2-year PFS between the chemoimmunotherapy group and the chemotherapy group (hazard ratio, 0.38, 95% confidence interval: 0.18-0.78, log-rank P= 0.007). The most frequent grade 3-4 adverse event in the chemotherapy and chemoimmunotherapy groups was myelosuppression (10/49 [22.4%] and 4/12 [33.3%], respectively). The most frequent grade 3-4 adverse events in the immunotherapy group were diarrhea (1/7, 14.8%) and hepatotoxicity (1/7, 14.8%). Chemoimmunotherapy had the highest 2-year PFS as a first-line treatment for advanced pLELC compared to chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Monochoria C. Presl is a genus of Pontederiaceae and confined to the Old World, with species mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia, and Australia. However, phylogenetic relationships and biogeography within Monochoria are yet to be fully resolved. Here, we sequenced 14 Monochoria plastomes, representing around eight of the ~10 species of Monochoria, and two plastomes from related genera. We undertook comparative analyses and phylogenetic reconstructions of Monochoria using these and other available sequences. We found the plastomes of Pontederiaceae to be highly conserved in structure, and identified six regions as mutational hotspots among species of Monochoria. Our data strongly support the monophyly of Monochoria and two main clades within the genus. We confirm that Monochoria australasica Ridl. is sister to the rest of the genus and that Monochoria korsakowii (Regel & Maack) defines the second split within Monochoria. In addition, we inferred the African endemic species Monochoria africana (Solms) N. E. Br. to be closely related to Monochoria plantaginea (Roxb.) Kunth and an undetermined specimen from Australia (Monochoria sp. AU63). Estimation of divergence times and biogeography implied that the African species M. africana originated in Asia, and the most recent common ancestor of Monochoria was distributed in Australasia/Asia at approximately 15 Ma, followed by diversification in Asia during the late Miocene and Pliocene. Long‐distance dispersal, likely mediated by migratory birds, to Africa and Australia during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, might have contributed to the extant transoceanic distribution of the genus. Camponotus japonicus Mayr, 1866 is a widespread and open-field formicine ant species in east Asia. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of C. japonicus. This mitogenome was 16,422 bp long and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs) and two ribosomal RNA unit genes (rRNAs). Gene order was conserved and identical to most other previously sequenced Formicidae. All PCGs of C. japonicus have the conventional start codon for invertebrate mitochondrial PCGs (five ATT, four ATA and four ATG). All PCGs terminated with the stop codon TAA. The whole mitogenome exhibited heavy AT nucleotide bias (77.8%). Phylogenetic analysis positioned C. japonicus in a well-supported clade with C. atrox and C. concavus, and C. japonicus was more closely related to C. atrox than to C. concavus. Within Formicinae, the topology (Colobopsis + (Polyrhachis + Camponotus) + (Formica + (Nylanderia + Lasius) + (Anoplolepis + Acropyga))) was recovered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inonotus obliquus, also known as the Chaga mushroom, has been used as a traditional medicine to treat many different diseases in Asia. Ethanol and water extraction were performed to examine the blocking effect of the Chaga mushroom on the CTLA-4/CD80 interaction. The inhibitory activities of the Chaga mushroom/70% EtOH extract (CME) and the Chaga mushroom/water extract (CMW) were confirmed using several cell-based assays. To identify the contents of major compounds CME and CMW, we performed HPLC analysis. The content of lanosterol (1) in CME was 0.41%. Our findings provide experimental evidence that the Chaga mushroom can develop a small-molecule inhibitor that blocks the CTLA-4/CD80 interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cumulative displacement by multiple slip events along faults may generate composite damage zones (CDZ) of increasing width, and could modify the hydraulic and mechanical properties of the faults. The internal architecture and fracture distribution within CDZs at the subsurface are analysed here by using seismic attributes of variance, curvature and dip-azimuth of the 3-D seismic reflection data from tight sandstone reservoirs in northeast Sichuan, China. The analysed faults intersect the reservoir within a depth range of 2.4–3.0 km. The damage intensity mapping revealed multiple CDZs with thicknesses approaching 1 km along faults ranging 3–15 km in length, and up to 1000 m of cumulative slip. The identification of numerous fault cores and associate damage zones led us to define three classes of CDZs: banded shape, box shape and dome shape. The mechanical strength contrasts and distortion of fault cores suggest potential weakening and strengthening (healing) mechanisms for formation of CDZs that can be extended to faulting processes and earthquake simulations. High-resolution 2D and 3D seismic data are used to investigate the morphology, internal architecture and origin of widespread seafloor undulations in the eastern area of a submarine canyon system, northern South China Sea. The seafloor undulations reveal similar seafloor morphologies, and three different types (Types A, B and C) can be classified based on their relative locations and internal seismic characters. Types A and B are observed in the canyon areas, whereas Type C occurs in the canyon heads. Seismic reflections within Types A and C are continuous and have an upslope migrating trend, while Type B seafloor undulations are separated by listric faults. Our analysis reveals the origins of these three different types of seafloor undulations. Type A seafloor undulations are sediment waves formed by turbidity currents flowing through the submarine canyons. Gravity-driven submarine creep resulted in the formation of Type B seafloor undulations. Type C undulations are sediment waves generated by internal waves interacting with the continental slope. Our results provide information about the origin of widespread seafloor undulations in other submarine canyon systems. Objectives: Since the 1990s, Singapore has experienced periodic dengue epidemics of increasing frequency and magnitude. In the aftermath of the 2004–2005 dengue epidemic, hospitals refined their admission criteria for dengue cases to right-site dengue case management and reduce the burden of healthcare utilization and negative outcomes. In this study, we describe the national trends of hospital admissions for dengue and disease severity in terms of length of stay (LOS), admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and death in hospital, and case fatality rate (CFR) in Singapore. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of notified cases and laboratory confirmed dengue patients admitted to all public and private hospitals between 2003 and 2017. Case notifications for dengue and hospitalization records were extracted from national databases. Results: The proportion of dengue cases hospitalized was lower in recent years; 28.9% in the 2013–2014 epidemic, compared to 93.2% in the 2004–2005 epidemic, and 58.1% in the 2007 epidemic. Median LOS remained stable over the years; overall LOS was 3 to 4 days and ICU stay was 2 to 3 days. Less than 2% of hospitalized patients were admitted to the ICU. Overall CFR was low and remained below 0.5%. The proportions of dengue cases hospitalized and patients admitted to the ICU were highest in the elderly aged 65 years and older. Conclusions: While the proportion of dengue cases hospitalized saw a drastic decline due to more selective admission criteria, there was no concomitant increase in adverse outcomes, suggesting that admission criteria were appropriate to focus on severe dengue cases. Further studies are needed to optimize dengue management in older adults who are more likely to be hospitalized with greater disease severity, given the higher proportions of hospitalizations and severe disease among older adults. Global incidence and temporal trends of asbestosis are rarely explored. Using the detailed information on asbestosis from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017, we described the age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) and its average annual percentage change. A Joinpoint Regression model was applied to identify varying temporal trends over time. Although the use of asbestos has been completely banned in many countries, the ASIR of asbestosis increased globally from 1990 to 2017. Furthermore, the most pronounced increases in ASIR of asbestosis were detected in high-income North America and Australasia. Several studies have reported that mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) may improve neurological functions in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the effects of MSC treatment on different degrees of severity of SCI. Systematic searching of studies reporting outcomes of MSCs on specific injury severities of patients with SCI was performed in The National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE), Embase and Cochrane for published articles up to the 6 July 2022. Two investigators independently reviewed the included studies and extracted the relevant data. The standardized mean differences of American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) motor score, ASIA light touch scores, ASIA pinprick scores and the Barthel index between baseline and follow-ups were pooled. A total of eight studies were included. A large majority focused on patients with ASIA grade A classification. The pooled mean differences of ASIA motor scores, ASIA light touch scores, ASIA pinprick scores and the Barthel index were –2.78 (95% confidence interval [CI] –5.12 to –0.43, P = 0.02), –18.26 (95% CI –26.09 to –10.43, P < 0.01), –17.08 (95% CI –24.10 to –10.07, P < 0.01) and –4.37 (95% CI –10.96 to 2.22, P = 0.19), respectively. MSC transplantation was a significantly effective therapy for patients with SCI with ASIA grade A. Multi-stage fluid influx has led to the volumetrically important occurrence of granite-related tourmalines at the Laojunshan metamorphic massif in Southeast Asia, which exhibits variable deformed structures and decomposition textures. These include disseminated tourmaline porphyroclasts (type-I), crosscutting tourmaline-quartz veins (type-II) and tourmaline veinlets (type-III). The chemical variations of these three types of tourmalines reveal a source transition from early boron-rich melt to late hydrothermal fluid, accompanying with variable fluid-rock interaction. Hydrothermal tourmalines are characterized by higher Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios, lower Na/(Na + Ca) ratios, more pronounced positive Eu anomalies, higher Sr and heavy rare earth element (HREE) concentrations, and lower Li, Nb, Zr, Hf, and light rare earth element (LREE) concentrations compared to magmatic tourmalines. The tourmalines exhibit δ11B values ranging from −13 to −7.9‰ for type-I, from −15.5 to −7.5‰ for type-II, and from −18.6 to −11.6‰ for type-III. This variation is mainly due to multiple fluid exsolution, Rayleigh fractionation and the mixing of two isotopically distinct sources. U Pb dating results of magmatic zircons from two tourmaline-bearing gneisses reveal the ages of magma emplacement and crystallization from 445 to 420 Ma. Magmatic-hydrothermal fluids released from Silurian peraluminous granites are responsible for the formation of the disseminated type-I tourmalines. Further hydraulic fracturing during exhumation led to the formation of the tourmaline-quartz veins (type-II) and the tourmaline veinlets (type-III), possibly from Cretaceous granitic magma-derived fluids that interacted with metamorphic rocks. The decreasing grain size resulted from decomposition and cataclasis coupled with the overpressured fluids weakening the host rocks along fractures and eventually promoting the deformation during exhumation of the metamorphic massif. The chemical and isotopic compositions of tourmaline suggest that the oxidized conditions possibly through fluid boiling and fluid-rock interaction may promote the regional Sn-mineralization. • Various deformed tourmalines are distinguished by texture and composition. • Tourmaline records a transition from a melt to a hydrothermal fluid. • Tourmaline reflects the impact of fluid on regional exhumation. • Fluid boiling and fluid-rock interaction contribute to cassiterite precipitation. Elevated CO 2 concentrations can change the multi-level nutritional relationship of the ecosystem through the cascading effect of the food chain. To date, few studies have investigated the effects of elevated CO 2 concentration on the Araneae species through the tritrophic system. Hylyphantes graminicola (Araneae: Linyphiidae) is distributed widely in Asia and is a dominant predator in cotton fields. This study investigated chemical components in the food chain of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) — cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) — predator (H. graminicola) and compared the development, reproduction, and predation of H. graminicola under ambient (400 ppm) and elevated concentration of CO 2 (800 ppm). The results showed that the elevated CO 2 concentration increased the chemicals of cotton and cotton aphid, but it did not affect the nutrients, development, reproduction, and predation of the spider. However, the survival rate of the spider was significantly decreased in elevated CO 2. Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), a recent epidemic human disease, is caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV). First reported in Asia, SARS quickly spread worldwide through international travelling. As of July 2003, the World Health Organization reported a total of 8,437 people afflicted with SARS with a 9.6% mortality rate. Although immunopathological damages may account for the severity of respiratory distress, little is known about how the genome-wide gene expression of the host changes under the attack of SARS-CoV. Results: Based on changes in gene expression of peripheral blood, we identified 52 signature genes that accurately discriminated acute SARS patients from non-SARS controls. While a general suppression of gene expression predominated in SARS-infected blood, several genes including those involved in innate immunity, such as defensins and eosinophil-derived neurotoxin, were upregulated. Instead of employing clustering methods, we ranked the severity of recovering SARS patients by generalized associate plots (GAP) according to the expression profiles of 52 signature genes. Through this method, we discovered a smooth transition pattern of severity from normal controls to acute SARS patients. The rank of SARS severity was significantly correlated with the recovery period (in days) and with the clinical pulmonary infection score. Conclusion: The use of the GAP approach has proved useful in analyzing the complexity and continuity of biological systems. The severity rank derived from the global expression profile of significantly regulated genes in patients may be useful for further elucidating the pathophysiology of their disease. The cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitor palbociclib has demonstrated efficacy and a manageable safety profile in combination with endocrine therapy in women with oestrogen receptor–positive (ER+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative (HER2–) advanced breast cancer (ABC) in international phase 3 trials. The phase 3 PALOMA-4 trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of palbociclib plus letrozole versus placebo plus letrozole in Asian women with ER+/HER2– ABC. Postmenopausal women (n = 340) with no prior systemic treatment for advanced disease were randomised 1:1 to palbociclib (125 mg/d orally; 3 weeks on, 1 week off) plus letrozole (2.5 mg/d orally; continuously) or placebo plus letrozole. The primary end-point was investigator-assessed progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary end-points included tumour response and safety. Median (95% CI) PFS was 21.5 (16.6–24.9) months with palbociclib plus letrozole and 13.9 (13.7–16.6) months with placebo plus letrozole (hazard ratio, 0.68 [95% CI, 0.53–0.87]; P = 0.0012). Consistent with the established safety profile, the most common adverse events (AEs) with palbociclib plus letrozole were neutropenia, leukopenia, thrombocytopaenia, and anaemia. Grade 3/4 neutropenia was reported in 84.5% of patients in the palbociclib arm versus 1.2% in the placebo arm. One serious AE of febrile neutropenia in the palbociclib group was reported. Findings from PALOMA-4 support the efficacy and safety of first-line palbociclib plus letrozole in postmenopausal Asian women with ER+/HER2– ABC. No new safety concerns of palbociclib plus letrozole were identified. Rubus coreanus Miquel (R. coreanus) is a unripen fruit of black raspberry native to eastern Asia. It is used as traditional oriental medicine and supplementary foods for centuries. Previous studies have shown that the R. coreanus extract (RCE) and its main constitute ellagic acid possess diverse biological activities. However, the effects of RCE on antitumor immunity and T cell function were not fully understood. The present study describes the anti-tumor effect of RCE in humanized PD-1 mice by blocking PD-1/PD-L1 interaction. Competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and pull down assay were performed to elucidate the binding properties of RCE in vitro. Cellular PD-1/PD-L1 blockade activities were measured by T cell receptor (TCR)-induced nuclear factor of activated T cells-luciferase activity in co-cultured cell models with PD-1/NFAT Jurkat and PD-L1/aAPC CHO-K1 cells. The in vivo efficacy of RCE was confirmed in humanized PD-1 mice bearing MC38 colorectal tumor. RCE and ellagic acid dose-dependently block the binding of PD-1 to PD-L1. Moreover, oral administration of RCE showed the potent anti-tumor activity similar to anti-PD-1 antibody. The present study suggests that RCE possesses potent anti-tumor effect via PD-1/PD-L1 blockade, and ellagic acid is the main compound in RCE. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an epithelial cancer emerging from the lining of nasopharyngeal mucosa, with extremely frequent occurrence in east and southeast Asia. For the purpose of exploring roles of the dysregulated long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) in NPC, we identified a novel lncRNA LINC00669 with an apparent negative correlation to the overall survival from human NPC mRNA expression profiling databases. We further performed RNA pulldown coupled with mass spectrum to find out its target protein, and applied a series of in vitro and in vivo loss-and-gain-of function assays to investigate its oncogenic roles in NPC tumor development and progression. Our results demonstrated that LINC00669 competitively binds to the key JAK/STAT signaling pathway suppressor SOCS1, and insulates it from imposing ubiquitination modification on the pathway component of STAT1, which leads to its abnormal stabilization and activation. The activated STAT1 is then transferred into the nucleus and initiates the transcription of genes related to proliferation and invasion. In summary, our study reveals that the cytoplasmic resident lncRNA LINC00669 confers malignant properties on NPC cancer cells by facilitating a persistent activation of the JAK/STAT signaling pathway. Backgroud Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Spreng is one of the important plant resources involved in the production of agarwood in China. The agarwood resin collected from wounded Aquilaria trees has been used in Asia for aromatic or medicinal purposes from ancient times, although the mechanism underlying the formation of agarwood still remains poorly understood owing to a lack of accurate and high-quality genetic information. Findings We report the genomic architecture of A. sinensis by using an integrated strategy combining Nanopore, Illumina, and Hi-C sequencing. The final genome was ∼726.5 Mb in size, which reached a high level of continuity and a contig N50 of 1.1 Mb. We combined Hi-C data with the genome assembly to generate chromosome-level scaffolds. Eight super-scaffolds corresponding to the 8 chromosomes were assembled to a final size of 716.6 Mb, with a scaffold N50 of 88.78 Mb using 1,862 contigs. BUSCO evaluation reveals that the genome completeness reached 95.27%. The repeat sequences accounted for 59.13%, and 29,203 protein-coding genes were annotated in the genome. According to phylogenetic analysis using single-copy orthologous genes, we found that A. sinensis is closely related to Gossypium hirsutum and Theobroma cacao from the Malvales order, and A. sinensis diverged from their common ancestor ∼53.18–84.37 million years ago. Conclusions Here, we present the first chromosome-level genome assembly and gene annotation of A. sinensis. This study should contribute to valuable genetic resources for further research on the agarwood formation mechanism, genome-assisted improvement, and conservation biology of Aquilaria species. The Japanese Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) is a regional navigation satellite system covering the entire Asia-Oceania region. Except for the standard satellite navigation signals, QZSS satellites also broadcast L6E augmentation signals with real time GNSS precise orbit every 30 s and clock messages every 1 s, which is very important and necessary for Real-Time precise point positioning (RTPPP) applications. In this paper, the MADOCA real-time services derived from L6E augmentation signals were evaluated for both accuracy and availability compared with IGS final products. To avoid the datum difference of GPS orbit between MADOCA real-time and IGS final products, the 7-parameters Helmert transformation was firstly used in this paper, and then the orbit was evaluated on radial, along, and cross-track directions. On the clock evaluation, the mean satellites clock errors were taken as reference clock error, and then the standard deviation (STD) was calculated for each satellite. Furthermore, the signal in space range errors (SISRE) were also summarized to evaluate the ranging-measurement accuracy. Seven-day evaluation results show that satellite orbit, clock errors, and the final SISRE errors range as being 1.8–3.9 cm, 0.04–0.15 ns (1.2–4.5 cm), and 5–10 cm, respectively. For the one-year long-term evaluation, daily SISRE errors in 2018 show consistent performance with that of seven days. Furthermore, the open source software RTKLIB was used to evaluate the kinematic PPP performance based on the MADOCA real-time products, and it shows that the daily positioning accuracy of the 20 globally distributed IGS stations can reach 4.9, 4.2, 11.7, and 12.1 cm in the east, north, up, and 3D directions, respectively. Hence, it is concluded that the current MADOCA real-time ephemeris products can provide orbit and clock products with SISRE on centimeters level with high interval, which could meet the demands of the RTPPP solution and serve real-time users who can access the MADOCA real-time products via L6E signal or internet. Abstract: Aim of the study: Traditional Chinese medicine herbs (TCMHs) are used in medicines as well as in daily dietary supplements in Asia. In this study, we employed pNF-κB-Luc or pIFN-γ-Luc and BALB/c mice peritoneal macrophages or splenocytes to investigate both the immune and inflammatory effects of six selected plant species. Materials and Methods: Specifically, we used ethyl acetate fractions of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge var. mongholicus (Bunge) Hsiao (Fabaceae) (AM), Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees (Acanthaceae) (AP), Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Apiaceae) (AS), Eucommia ulmodes Oliv. (Eucommiaceae) leaves (EU leaves), Isatis indigotica Fort. (Brassicaceae) (II) and Morus alba L. (Moraceae) (MA). Results: We found that ethyl acetate fractions of AP, AS and MA significantly decreased NF-κB luciferase activity and also the secretion of NO and PGE2 in LPS/IFN-γ stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages (p <0.05). In contrast, they did not affect IFN-γ luciferase activity or IFN-γ production in concanavalin A (Con A)-activated mouse splenocytes. Our results indicated that the anti-inflammatory properties of these plant extracts might be resulted from the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators (e.g., NO and PGE2), at least in part via suppression of a signaling pathway such as NF-κB. Conclusions: Collectively, we have found that three potent bioactive TCMH species exerted significant NF-κB inhibitory activity and acted in a cell type dependent fashion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

During their rapid economic development and industrialization, megacities in the developing nations with high populations (especially in the east and south Asia) are plagued by severe air pollution problems (e.g., heavy haze), which impose a threat not only to public health but also to the sustainable development of society and the economy. To relieve the burden of air pollution for the general public, this article reviewed several geoengineering measures based on solar chimneys, which have the large-scale elimination ability on pollutants in the air, particularly for particulate matter. These geoengineering measures include driving the polluted air penetrate the planetary boundary layer into the troposphere to avoid the dramatic growth of concentrations of particulate matter, spraying water on the top of the solar chimney into the air to scavenge pollution, and intercepting fine particles in the air driven by the solar energy with large filters. Compared with traditional methods (e.g., giant spray trucks), those solar chimney geoengineering measures have the following advantages: 1) they can be operated 24 h a day, thus keeping the pollution removal function stable and continuous; 2) they are environment-friendly and can generate clean electricity to compensate for energy consumption; 3) they are also robust and operational with very low maintenance for a long period. Given the advantages of the solar chimney geoengineering measures and the economic and human health losses caused by air pollution, those geoengineering approaches deserve to be studied further and implemented in those countries that are suffering from heavy air pollution problems. Tectonic pseudotachylytes have provided valuable insights into the evolution of seismic activity during crustal deformation. However, the origin and formation processes of pseudotachylytes are still debated. Thin pseudotachylyte veins were first recognized within the granitic mylonites of the continental exhumed Ailaoshan-Red River strike-slip shear zone, southeastern Asia, which record the deformation characteristics from ductile (mylonite) to brittle deformation (ultracataclasite). Mylonitization resulted in the recrystallization of quartz aggregates/ribbons, fine-grained plagioclase, and the concentration of biotite into biotite-rich foliation planes. The pseudotachylyte veins have various angles oblique to the host rock foliation, which record superimposition of the latter brittle deformation onto former ductile fabrics. Observations of the microstructure and quartz clast size distribution (obey power-law distribution) suggest that crushing was the dominant process in the formation of pseudotachylyte in the samples. Plagioclase within the pseudotachylyte vein presents a complex texture of high-strength nanocrystalline to partly amorphous material. Detailed microstructure observation revealed that amorphous materials form by a solid-state amorphization process and is different from friction melts. The changes in composition between plagioclase clasts and amorphous materials (enriched in Ca, but depleted in Na) provide evidence of mechanochemical effect that accompanies fault motion and comminution process. Epidemics caused by flaviviruses occur globally; however, no antiviral drugs treating flaviviruses infections have yet been developed. Nafamostat (NM) is a protease inhibitor approved for pancreatitis and anti-coagulation. The anti-flavivirus potential of NM has yet to be determined. Here, utilizing in vitro and in vivo infection assays, we present that NM effectively inhibits Zika virus (ZIKV) and other flaviviruses in vitro. NM inhibited the production of ZIKV viral RNA and proteins originating from Asia and African lineage in human-, mouse- and monkey-derived cell lines and the in vivo anti-ZIKV efficacy of NM was verified. Mode-of-action analysis using time-of-drug-addition assay, infectivity inhibition assay, surface plasmon resonance assay, and molecular docking revealed that NM interacted with viral particles and blocked the early stage of infection by targeting the domain III of ZIKV envelope protein. Analysing the anti-flavivirus effects of NM-related compounds suggested that the antiviral effect depended on the unique structure of NM. [Display omitted] • Disjunct distribution of the Limenitidinae butterflies between Asia and other continents are the outcomes of multiple intercontinental dispersals after the Eocene. • The Adelpha alala -species group should be transferred to the genus Limenitis. • Museum specimens are excellent sources for molecular phylogenetics and biogeography with the aid of next-generation sequencing. Most members of the nymphalid subfamily Limenitidinae are distributed in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Previous studies have inferred their higher-level phylogeny and found that Southeast Asia seems to be the center of origin, with numerous dispersal events to other continents. However, the complete biogeographic history of Limenitidinae butterflies is still largely unknown. We sampled 181 taxa from 164 species and used a metagenomic method to obtain 40 genes (mitogenomes and three nuclear ribosomal loci) for inferring the historical biogeography of the group. We find that Limenitidinae originated in eastern Asia during the early Eocene (ca. 52 Ma) and started to diversify and disperse into Africa before the end of Eocene. Intercontinental exchanges between Africa and eastern Asia continued in the early Miocene: Asian Adoliadini and Asian endemic taxa Bhagadatta had African origins in the Oligocene, whereas African Neptini dispersed in the opposite direction from Asia in the early Miocene. In addition, ancestors of the tribes Limenitidini and Adoliadini dispersed into the Neotropics and Australasia multiple times during the early-to-middle Miocene. Eastern Asia is the center of origin of the tribe Limenitidini, with several taxa disjunctly distributed in eastern Asia and the Americas. Our work provides a robust phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships in the tribe Limenitidini and suggests that the alala- species group of Adelpha should be placed in the genus Limenitis. Importance: Catheter ablation for persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) has shown limited success., Objective: To determine whether AF drivers could be accurately identified by periodicity and similarity (PRISM) mapping ablation results for persistent AF when added to pulmonary vein isolation (PVI)., Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective randomized clinical trial was performed between June 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020, and included patients with persistent AF enrolled in 3 centers across Asia. Data were analyzed on October 1, 2022., Intervention: Patients were assigned to the PRISM-guided approach (group 1) or the conventional approach (group 2) at a 1:1 ratio., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was freedom from AF or other atrial arrhythmia for longer than 30 seconds at 6 and 12 months., Results: A total of 170 patients (mean [SD] age, 62.0 [12.3] years; 136 men [80.0%]) were enrolled (85 patients in group 1 and 85 patients in group 2). More group 1 patients achieved freedom from AF at 12 months compared with group 2 patients (60 [70.6%] vs 40 [47.1%]). Multivariate analysis indicated that the PRISM-guided approach was associated with freedom from the recurrence of atrial arrhythmia (hazard ratio, 0.53 [95% CI, 0.33-0.85])., Conclusions and Relevance: The waveform similarity and recurrence pattern derived from high-density mapping might provide an improved guiding approach for ablation of persistent AF. Bamboos are important nontimber forest plants widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, America, and Pacific islands. They comprise the Bambusoideae in the grass family (Poaceae), including approximately 1700 described species in 127 genera. In spite of the widespread uses of bamboo for food, construction, and bioenergy, the gene repertoire of bamboo still remains largely unexplored. Raddia distichophylla (Schrad. ex Nees) Chase, belonging to the tribe Olyreae (Bambusoideae, Poaceae), is a diploid herbaceous bamboo with only slightly lignified stems. In this study, we report a draft genome assembly of the ∼589 Mb whole-genome sequence of R. distichophylla with a contig N50 length of 86.36 Kb. Repeat sequences account for ∼49.08% of the genome assembly, of which LTR retrotransposons occupy ∼35.99% of the whole genome. A total of 30,763 protein-coding genes were annotated in the R. distichophylla genome with an average transcript size of 2887 bp. Access to this herbaceous bamboo genome sequence will provide novel insights into biochemistry, molecular marker-assisted breeding programs, and germplasm conservation for bamboo species worldwide., (© The Author(s) 2021. Global incidence and temporal trends of asbestosis are rarely explored. Using the detailed information on asbestosis from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017, we described the age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) and its average annual percentage change. A Joinpoint Regression model was applied to identify varying temporal trends over time. Although the use of asbestos has been completely banned in many countries, the ASIR of asbestosis increased globally from 1990 to 2017. Furthermore, the most pronounced increases in ASIR of asbestosis were detected in high-income North America and Australasia. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Sauropus androgynus L. Merr is an underexploited perennial shrub traditionally used as a medicinal plant in South Asia and Southeast Asia. The plant is regarded as not just a green vegetable for diet, but as a traditional herb for certain aliments. For instance, it has traditionally been used to relieve fever, to treat ulcers and diabetes, to promote lactation and eyesight, and to reduce obesity., Aim of the Study: This paper aims to review the botany, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology, and pharmacological activities of S. androgynus, and discuss the known chemical constituents at work in S. androgynus-induced bronchiolitis obliterans for providing new ideas to the mechanism of the disease and pharmacology research of the plant., Materials and Methods: The data presented in this review were collected from published literatures as well as the electronic databases of PubMed, CNKI, Web of Science, SCI finder, ACS, Science Direct, Wiley, Springer, Taylor, Google Scholar, and a number of unpublished resources, (e.g. books, and Ph.D. and M.Sc. dissertations)., Results: The scientific literature indicates that S. androgynus is a valuable and popular herbal medicine whose nutritional value is also higher than that of other commonly used vegetables. Phytochemical analyses identified high content of fatty acids, flavonoids, and polyphenols as the major bioactive components in S. androgynus. Crude extracts and phytochemical compounds isolated from S. androgynus show a wide spectrum of in vitro and in vivo pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, skin whitening, anti-diabetic, and immunoregulatory activities. The traditional use, such as increasing lactation, treating ulcers and diabetes, and reducing obesity, have been evaluated and studied with various methods. Numerous reports have revealed the unusual link between the consumption of S. androgynus and the induction of a chronic and irreversible obstructive disease (namely, bronchiolitis obliterans), indicating that the toxicity and side effects of this plant that is presently used in health care and medicine are a major area of concern., Conclusion: Though little importance was attached to this green plant, S. androgynus has notable phytochemical constituents and various pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity activities. Studies have firmly established the association between excessive consumption of the uncooked S. androgynus juice over a period of time and the occurrence of bronchiolitis obliterans. It is inadvisable to ingest excessive amounts of S. androgynus before fully understanding the pathogenesis and induction mechanism of this fatal disease. Importance: Prospective assessment of treatments known to benefit patients in global clinical trials in specific racial groups is essential., Objective: To compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of adding pertuzumab to trastuzumab and docetaxel vs placebo, trastuzumab, and docetaxel in Asian patients with ERBB2-positive early or locally advanced breast cancer., Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial enrolled 329 women with ERBB2-positive early (T2-3, N0-1, M0) or locally advanced breast cancer (T2-3, N2 or N3, M0; T4, any N, M0) and primary tumor larger than 2 cm from March 14, 2016, to March 13, 2017. Analysis of the primary end point was performed on an intention-to-treat basis., Interventions: Before surgery, patients received 4 cycles of intravenous pertuzumab (840-mg loading dose and 420-mg maintenance doses), trastuzumab (8-mg/kg loading dose and 6-mg/kg maintenance doses), and docetaxel (75 mg/m2) or intravenous placebo, trastuzumab, and docetaxel every 3 weeks. Of the most common grade 3 or higher adverse events, there was a higher incidence of neutropenia in the pertuzumab group (83 of 218 [38.1%] vs 36 of 110 [32.7%]). Serious adverse events were reported in 10.1% of patients (22 of 218) in the pertuzumab group and 8.2% of patients (9 of 110) in the placebo group., Conclusions and Relevance: Treatment with pertuzumab, trastuzumab, and docetaxel resulted in a statistically significant improvement in the total pathologic complete response rate vs placebo, trastuzumab, and docetaxel for the neoadjuvant treatment of ERBB2-positive early or locally advanced breast cancer in Asian patients. Safety data were in line with the known pertuzumab safety profile and generally comparable between treatment groups. The phylogenetic relationships of the nymphalid butterfly tribe Limenitidini are best known for the genera Limenitis and Adelpha, model taxa for evolutionary processes such as Batesian mimicry and rapid adaptive radiations. Whereas these American limenitidines have received the most attention, phylogenetic relationships of their Asian relatives are still controversial and largely unexplored. Even one of the largest genera in Asia, Athyma, is polyphyletic. To clarify the phylogenetic relationships of these Asian Limenitidini, a total of 53 representatives were sampled; 37 have their mitogenomes sequenced for the first time. Our phylogenetic results confirm that mitogenomic data provides well-resolved relationships at most major levels of the phylogeny, even using different partition schemes or different inference methods. Interestingly, our results show that some Athyma taxa are embedded within the genus Limenitis, whereas the genus Tacola, previously considered to be a synonym of Athyma, needs to be recognized as a valid clade. Additionally, the other Limenitidini genera in Asia (namely Tarattia, Litinga, Sumalia, Pandita and Patsuia) are now grouped either within Athyma or Limenitis, so these genera need to be sunk. Importantly, we also show that the mainly Old World Limenitis and entirely New World Adelpha are sister groups, confirming the relevance of Asian lineages to global studies of Limenitis evolution., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Previously, Pyrrhoderma accommodated two polypore species, P. adamantinum and P. scaurum; however, phylogenetic studies indicated that these two species were not congeneric within the Hymenochaetaceae and that P. adamantinum formed a clade with Phellinidium noxium. To resolve the relationships among the two species of Pyrrhoderma and other related taxa, specimens from China, Costa Rica, Singapore, and Thailand were studied from both morphological and phylogenetic perspectives. A new genus, Fulvoderma, is erected to accommodate F. scaurum comb. nov., and a new species, F. australe (the generic type). Pyrrhoderma is delimited to include the generic type, P. sendaiense (a later synonym of P. adamantinum); two new combinations, P. lamaënse comb. nov., and P. noxium comb. nov.; and three new species, P. hainanense, P. thailandicum, and P. yunnanense. In addition, an undescribed lineage including several specimens from subtropical and tropical forests in China, Costa Rica, Singapore, and Thailand also nested within the Pyrrhoderma clade. However, as the voucher specimens are sterile or almost so, they are not described. The concept of Pyrrhoderma was emended to also accommodate species bearing resupinate, effuse-reflexed basidiocarps, hymenial or hyphoid setae, and non-subglobose basidiospores. Keys to Fulvoderma and Pyrrhoderma are provided.

Previous studies showed that isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutation might be a prognostic biomarker of prognosis in glioblastoma (GBM) patients, but the outcomes were various. A meta-analysis of published studies was carried out to reach a reliable assessment of the association between IDH1 mutation and mortality of GBM patients. Relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were pooled using meta-analysis to assess risk of mortality in patients with IDH1 mutation. A total of 20 studies (3 prospective cohort and 17 retrospective cohort studies) were finally included into the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis of total included studies suggested that GBM patients with IDH1 mutation had decreased risk of mortality compared those patients without IDH1 mutation (RR = 0.43, 95%CI 0.35-0.54, P < 0.001). GBM patients with IDH1 mutation from European countries had also decreased mortality risk compared with those patients without IDH1 mutation (RR = 0.35, 95%CI 0.25-0.49, P < 0.001), but GBM patients with IDH1 mutation from Asians only dad 32% decrease of mortality risk compared with those patients without IDH1 mutation (RR = 0.68, 95%CI 0.49-0.94, P = 0.018). The findings from the meta-analysis provide strong evidence for the association between IDH1 mutation and decreased mortality risk of GBM patients. In addition, there is an obvious difference in the mortality risk of GBM patients with IDH1 mutation between western and eastern countries.

Background: The prognostic significance of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in gastric cancer (GC) remains unclear. Recently, a number of studies have investigated the association between EBV infection and the prognosis of GC with controversial results. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to assess its prognostic significance., Methods: PubMed and EMBASE were searched for studies up to October 1, 2014. We investigated the association between EBV infection with survival in patients with GC. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to evaluate risk., Results: A final analysis of 8,336 patients with GC from 24 studies was performed. Our analysis results indicated that the pooled HR was 0.67 (95% CI: 0.55-0.79; Z = 11.18, P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses stratified by region revealed that the protective role of EBV infection only remained in the Asian population (HR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.48-0.75; P < 0.001). When stratified by study quality and statistical methodology, the protective role could also be identified in high quality studies (HR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.55-0.79) and in univariate analysis studies (HR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.50-0.74). There was no evidence of significant heterogeneity and publication bias., Conclusions: The presence of EBV has a favorable impact on GC patient's survival, especially in an Asian population. Future updated studies, especially large-scale randomized controlled studies stratified by region, are warranted as validation studies.

Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the difference in major adverse cardiac events (MACE) at 3 years after double-kissing (DK) crush versus culotte stenting for unprotected left main distal bifurcation lesions (LMDBLs)., Background: The multicenter and randomized DKCRUSH-III (Comparison of double kissing crush versus culotte stenting for unprotected distal left main bifurcation lesions: results from a multicenter, randomized, prospective study) showed that DK crush stenting was associated with fewer MACE at 1-year follow-up in patients with LMDBLs compared with culotte stenting. Here, we report the 3-year clinical outcome of the DKCRUSH-III study., Methods: A total of 419 patients with LMDBLs who were randomly assigned to either the DK crush or culotte group in the DKCRUSH-III study were followed for 3 year. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of a MACE at 3 years. Stent thrombosis (ST) was the safety endpoint. Patients were classified by simple and complex LMDBLs according to the DEFINITION (Definition and Impact of Complex Bifurcation Lesions on Clinical Outcomes After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Using Drug-Eluting Stents) study criteria., Results: At 3 years, MACE occurred in 49 patients the culotte group and in 17 patients in the DK crush group (cumulative event rates of 23.7% and 8.2%, respectively; p < 0.001), mainly driven by increased myocardial infarction (8.2% vs. 3.4%, respectively; p = 0.037) and target-vessel revascularization (18.8% vs. 5.8%, respectively; p < 0.001) between groups. Definite ST rate was 3.4% in the culotte group and 0% in the DK crush group (p = 0.007). Complex LMDBLs were associated with a higher rate of MACE (35.3%) at 3 years compared with a rate of 8.1% in patients with simple LMDBLs (p < 0.001), with an extremely higher rate in the culotte group (51.5% vs. 15.1%, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Culotte stenting for LMDBLs was associated with significantly increased rates of MACE and ST. Background: Despite the rising burden of chronic respiratory diseases, global data for lung function are not available. We investigated global variation in lung function in healthy populations by region to establish whether regional factors contribute to lung function., Methods: In an international, community-based prospective study, we enrolled individuals from communities in 17 countries between Jan 1, 2005, and Dec 31, 2009 (except for in Karnataka, India, where enrolment began on Jan 1, 2003). Trained local staff obtained data from participants with interview-based questionnaires, measured weight and height, and recorded forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁) and forced vital capacity (FVC). We analysed data from participants 130-190 cm tall and aged 34-80 years who had a 5 pack-year smoking history or less, who were not affected by specified disorders and were not pregnant, and for whom we had at least two FEV₁ and FVC measurements that did not vary by more than 200 mL. We divided the countries into seven socioeconomic and geographical regions: south Asia (India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan), east Asia (China), southeast Asia (Malaysia), sub-Saharan Africa (South Africa and Zimbabwe), South America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Chile), the Middle East (Iran, United Arab Emirates, and Turkey), and North America or Europe (Canada, Sweden, and Poland). Data were analysed with non-linear regression to model height, age, sex, and region., Findings: 153,996 individuals were enrolled from 628 communities. Data from 38,517 asymptomatic, healthy non-smokers (25,614 women; 12,903 men) were analysed. For all regions, lung function increased with height non-linearly, decreased with age, and was proportionately higher in men than women. The quantitative effect of height, age, and sex on lung function differed by region. Compared with North America or Europe, FEV1 adjusted for height, age, and sex was 31·3% (95% CI 30·8-31·8%) lower in south Asia, 24·2% (23·5-24·9%) lower in southeast Asia, 12·8% (12·4-13·4%) lower in east Asia, 20·9% (19·9-22·0%) lower in sub-Saharan Africa, 5·7% (5·1-6·4%) lower in South America, and 11·2% (10·6-11·8%) lower in the Middle East. We recorded similar but larger differences in FVC. The differences were not accounted for by variation in weight, urban versus rural location, and education level between regions., Interpretation: Lung function differs substantially between regions of the world. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) management varies across Asia due to disparities in affluence and healthcare provision. We surveyed CML management practice at 33 hospitals in 14 countries/regions to identify treatment challenges and opportunities for harmonization. Patients were generally treated according to international guidelines; however, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and molecular monitoring are inaccessible to many patients not covered by national insurance or eligible for subsidized treatment. Late diagnosis and suboptimal monitoring, often due to cost and accessibility issues, are challenges. Priorities for Asia include: extending accessibility to TKIs; specialist laboratory monitoring; and enriching data to support regional CML management guidelines., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness in infants and children caused by viruses that belong to the enterovirus genus of the picornavirus family. Although most HFMD do not result in serious complications, outbreaks of HFMD caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71) can present with a high rate of neurological complications, including meningoencephalitis, pulmonary complications, and possibly death. HFMD caused by EV71 has become a major emerging infectious disease in Asia and the highly pathogenic potential of EV71 clearly requires the attention of world medical community. Although vaccine development for EV71 is active and ongoing in Asian countries, a greater joint effort is needed for vaccine researchers and developers in both developed and developing countries to produce a safe and effective EV71 vaccine., ((c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Climate change-according to conventional wisdom-will result in an expansion of tropical parasitic diseases in terms of latitude and altitude, with vector-borne diseases particularly prone to change. However, although a significant rise in temperature occurred over the past century, there is little empirical evidence whether climate change has indeed favoured infectious diseases. This might be explained by the complex relationship between climate change and the frequency and the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, which is characterised by nonlinear associations and countless other complex factors governing the distribution of infectious diseases. Here, we explore whether and how climate change might impact on diseases targeted by the Regional Network for Asian Schistosomiasis and Other Helminth Zoonoses (RNAS(+)). We start our review with a short summary of the current evidence-base how climate change affects the distribution of infectious diseases. Next, we introduce biology-based models for predicting the distribution of infectious diseases in a future, warmer world. Two case studies are presented: the classical RNAS(+) disease schistosomiasis and an emerging disease, angiostrongyliasis, focussing on their occurrences in the People's Republic of China. Strengths and limitations of current models for predicting the impact of climate change on infectious diseases are discussed, and we propose model extensions to include social and ecological factors. Finally, we recommend that mitigation and adaptation strategies to diminish potential negative effects of climate change need to be developed in concert with key stakeholders so that surveillance and early-warning systems can be strengthened and the most vulnerable population groups protected., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
