Achieving a sufficient IELTS band score for academic purposes has been a major goal of many L2 learners around the world, especially those in Asia. However, IELTS writing scores were consistently reported to be the lowest when compared to the scores in speaking, reading, and listening. Despite a growing body of research in IELTS writing, little focused on the role of model essays and noticing hypotheses. The present study aimed to fill in this gap by examining whether or not the implementation of both noticing hypothesis and model essays had a discernible influence on learners' IELTS task 2 writing. To reach this goal, a quasi-experimental design including a pretest and a posttest was conducted with the voluntary participation of 52 undergraduates. These participants were divided into two groups: control group (CG, n = 25), learning in the conventional method (peer feedback and teacher feedback), and experimental group (EG, n = 27), using the noticing-model essays method. Following this, semi-structured interviews were performed to gain insights into the quantitative data. The results from this mixed-methods approach showed that there were significant gains in the overall performance and in the lexical resources subscale in the EG while no considerable changes were observed in the CG. Additionally, the other subscales (task response, grammatical range and accuracy, and cohesion-coherence) did not witness any significant differences between the two groups. Several pedagogical implications and recommendations for future research, especially in the Asian context, were also discussed.

The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a U.S.-based job-training program that serves unemployed workers aged 55 and older with incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty level. While federal funds are set aside to serve Asian workers in SCSEP, little is known about their characteristics and experiences. In response, this pilot study aimed to document the health, well-being, and experiences of older Asian SCSEP participants in Massachusetts through the completion of a survey. Respondents (N = 39) ranged in age from 58 to 73 and identified as either Chinese (72%) or Vietnamese (28%). All were immigrants, and almost all spoke a language other than English at home. Most reported "good" health as well as financial difficulties. They also stated that their supervisors in their placements were supportive. On average, respondents noted moderate interest in searching for a paid job after exiting SCSEP, although more reported interest in searching for a volunteer role. Key to the success of this study was a robust collaboration with a local human services organization with strong ties to the Chinese and Vietnamese communities. Background: Melasma is an acquired and treatment-resistant aging facial skin condition prevalent among the older Asian females. The Q-switched toning laser is the most widely used for the treatment of moderate to severe melasma in Asia. Recently, the picosecond laser has been introduced for various pigmentary disorders such as melasma. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of dual toning combined with 1064 nm Nd:YAG picosecond and quasi-long-pulsed laser in the treatment of severe melasma. Subjects and Methods: Twenty Vietnamese females, mean age 41.9 ± 6.4 years, Fitzpatrick skin type IV, with clinical diagnosis of severe dermal and mixedtype melasma were treated by at least eight sessions picosecond Nd:YAG 1064 nm reducing Melasma Area and Severity Index (MASI) to less than 15%. Then they were treated with 3 sessions of dual toning combined picosecond Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser having an energy and spot size of 0.6-0.8 J/cm² and 8 mm with micropulsed mode Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser (350 μs) having an energy and spot size of 2.6 J/cm2 and 15 mm with ICD off. Mild and even erythema was the endpoint (40-42°C using the infrared thermometer). Treatments were given every 4 weeks. Improvement was rated by MASI at the baseline (T1), after eight sessions of picotoning (T2), and three sessions of dual toning (T3). Results: The mean MASI score of 20 patients at baseline (T1) was 16.24 ± 4.88 (min 6.0; max 28.8); after at least eight picotoning sessions, the mean MASI was 15.12 ± 4.69, representing a 7.44 ± 4.41% reduction in MASI score. The MASI score of the dual toning laser continued to decrease after three dual toning sessions from 15.12 ± 4.6 to 9.77 ± 3.86 (MASI score reduced by a mean of 5.35 ± 2.64), achieving 35.15 ± 13.51% reduction from T2 and 40.17 ± 12.14% reduction from baseline MASI (T1). There were no unexpected side effects in any patients. Conclusion: The dual toning method using the 1064 nm Nd:YAG picosecond and microsecond laser was safe and effective and well tolerated by all patients without downtime. The English language is significant to the internationalisation of higher education worldwide. Countries in Asia are proactive in appropriating English for their national interests, while paying attention to associated national cultural identity issues. This article examines the ways in which the role of English is interpreted and justified in different countries in Asia, with a particular focus on Japan, as these nations attempt to internationalise their higher education within the broader processes of regionalisation and globalisation and their own nationalist discourse. Through critical analyses and discussions of Japan's two major government initiatives, the Action Plan 2003 to ‘Cultivate Japanese with English Abilities’ and the ‘Global 30’ Project 2008, the article investigates how cultural national identities are shaped, are altered and are put ‘at risk’ in policies and practices for the internationalisation of higher education and the overemphasis on English. It argues for the importance of understanding the intersections of English language policy, the internationalisation of higher education and national cultural identity and also considers how the over-promotion of English in the case of Japan has been energetically driven by the nation building agenda that tends to undermine local languages and what this might mean for internationalisation. Although rice straw open burning is one of the main sources of air pollution in Asian countries, problems remain in collecting the activity data needed to calculate emission inventories. In Vietnam, the results from traditional data collection methods, which are reported by the Vietnam General Statistics Office high levels of uncertainty. This is largely due to a lack of human and financial resources. To improve upon this, this study critically assessed the benefits of incorporating cultivation area data obtained by the Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite in combination with crop production records during the period of 2015-2017. The results suggested that incorporating remote sensing data, especially satellite data, into a process-based crop model can improve the spatial distribution of yield estimates. Satellite data for 2018 were also applied to estimate emissions from rice straw open burning in the Red River Delta, Vietnam, for which official statistics are not otherwise yet available. The results show that a total of 3.24 Mt of burnt rice straw produced 3.82 Mt of CO 2 , 301 Gg of CO, 29.5 Gg of PM 10 , and 27 Gg of PM 2.5 . The estimated emission amounts for the common air pollutants SO 2 , NO x , and NH 3 were 583 tonnes, 7.4 Gg, and 13.3 Gg, respectively. Hydrocarbon emissions were 31 Gg for CH 4 and 22.7 Gg for NMVOC. The emission of BC, which is one of the main short-lived climate forcers, totalled 1.6 Gg.
