Pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and neointima formation after angioplasty involves vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) migration and proliferation followed by inflammatory responses mediated by recruited macrophages in the neointima. Terminalia chebula is widely used traditional medicine in Asia for its beneficial effects against cancer, diabetes, and bacterial infection. The study was designed to determine whether Terminalia chebula fructus water extract (TFW) suppresses VSMC migration and proliferation and inflammatory mediators production in macrophage (RAW 264.7). Our results showed that TFW possessed strong antioxidative effects in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging and lipid peroxidation assays. In addition, TFW reduced nitric oxide (NO) production, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in RAW 264.7 cells. Also, TFW inhibited platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB) induced VSMC migration as determined by wound healing and Boyden chamber assays. The antimigratory effect of TFW was due to its inhibitory effect on metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression, focal adhesion kinase (FAK) activation, and Rho-family of small GTPases (Cdc42 and RhoA) expression in VSMCs. Furthermore, TFW suppressed PDGF-BB induced VSMC proliferation by downregulation of mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling molecules. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) management varies across Asia due to disparities in affluence and healthcare provision. We surveyed CML management practice at 33 hospitals in 14 countries/regions to identify treatment challenges and opportunities for harmonization. Patients were generally treated according to international guidelines; however, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and molecular monitoring are inaccessible to many patients not covered by national insurance or eligible for subsidized treatment. Late diagnosis and suboptimal monitoring, often due to cost and accessibility issues, are challenges. Priorities for Asia include: extending accessibility to TKIs; specialist laboratory monitoring; and enriching data to support regional CML management guidelines., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Vibrio cholera, the causal agent of cholera, also occupies an autochthonous aquatic inhabitant. The current, seventh cholera pandemic is linked to O1 El Tor biotype and O139 serogroups. In the last decades, we have witnessed a shift involving genetically and phenotypically varied pandemic clones in Asia and Africa. Recent comparative genomic studies have identified a large 'mobilome', or composed of mobile genomic islands in V. cholerae. All seventh pandemic isolates have highly related genome sequences, but they can be differentiated by set of these genomic islands. A consequence of the extensive lateral gene transfer is that classically important diagnostic markers, such as serotype and biotype, are not reliable and new methods based on genomic sequences are required., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in Asia has an incidence rather lower than in Western countries yet tends to afflict a younger population. As in the West, imatinib mesylate (IM, Glivec) has supplanted busulphan, hydroxyurea and interferon-alpha as first-line treatment. Its use has resulted in a dramatic decline in the number of hematopoietic stem cell transplantations (HSCT) performed. Although it is expensive, IM induces a complete cytogenetic response in 60-90% of newly diagnosed patients, and up to 10% for those in blastic phase. The standard dose of 400 mg is well tolerated by most patients, although adverse events have been observed, including drug-induced cytopenia. Through the Glivec International Patient Assistance Program, the majority of CML patients has access to IM and can expect prolonged survival, even in the absence of HSCT. However, just as in Western countries, resistance to imatinib has emerged in Asian countries. They will require the novel tyrosine kinase inhibitors (dasatinib, nilotinib) becoming available through either clinical trials or market approval. This review examines the available data on CML in China, Hong Kong, India, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

The multilocus sequence typing scheme used previously for phylogenetic analysis of Escherichia coli was applied to 107 clinical isolates of Shigella flexneri. DNA sequencing of 3423 bp throughout seven housekeeping genes identified eight new allele types and ten new sequence types among the isolates. S. flexneri serotypes 1-5, X and Y were clustered together in a group containing many allelic variants while serotype 6 formed a distinct group, as previously established.
